A Kiddush Hashem for Jewish Youth
(Courtesy of Annual Scoutmaster’s Camporee)
There are only a few opportunities for a Kiddush Hashem for our Jewish youth today. At the 64th Annual Scoutmaster’s Camporee in Sunrise Florida, over 2,500 scouts and volunteers came together from all over the Southeast to compete in events such as Best Campsite and Best Gateway. “Scoutmaster’s” is the largest event of it’s kind in the Southeastern United States. At this keystone event, Jewish pride was on full display for Troop and Pack 18 of Young Israel of Hollywood, Florida.
Troop 18 and Pack 18 were founded 12 years ago by a family that wanted to bring the ideals of scouting to Jewish youth without attending Church based groups. The program has served Jews of all backgrounds and has officially been a part of Young Israel of Hollywood for 8 years.
To accomplish Torah law-abiding Jewish scouting, the scout group, with guidance from Rabbis, wrote a booklet on best practices for camping on Shabbat. This booklet was used by the National Jewish Committee on Scouting throughout the U.S. With these guidelines, Jewish Scouts have the roadmap to keep the Sabbath and the laws of Kashrut even while camping. Both the Scout Oath and Scout Law encourage a strong faith in their participants in their daily lives.
Troop and Pack 18 take that seriously and were able to put their abilities on display at Scoutmaster’s Camporee. Over 50 Troops and 25 Packs participated in the activities over the weekend. Each was judged, tallied, and awarded based on their scouting abilities. From lashings to camp gadgets, Kitchen cleanliness to Axe Yard Safety, everything was meticulously reviewed and scored. But of course, these feats didn’t prepare themselves. The Troops had to “Be Prepared” and the Packs had to “Do Their Best” for their gateways and campsites to meet all the criteria needed to win. The units all started working by 4 PM Friday to make their gates and campsites perfect. The units worked through the night and continued the next morning until 9 AM when judging began. However, Pack and Troop 18 did not have the luxury of time. They
P.14 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM COMMUNITY NEWS
stopped all production at the start of Shabbat at 6:12pm Friday night. At this time, Shabbat law strictly forbids building or constructing on Shabbat. What they had accomplished by that time must be their best.
The Scouts were prepared. For two months leading up to this Erev Shabbat, the two Units had been planning and practicing, creating and drilling. They arrived earlier in the day and went straight to work. They started building their Eruv border. They erected tents and shelters. They lashed together tripods and supports for their gateway. They set up their kitchens. They pioneered gadgets like a shoe rack, a tool holder, and a clothesline. They carried out their plans. Through much sweat and teamwork under the ever falling sun, they toiled toward their goals.
Adult leaders supported the Pack and Troop by cooking Shabbat dinner including chicken soup and setting up candles to light for Shabbat while the scouts checked and double-checked their areas and made any final touches. As Shabbat approached, they changed and prepared themselves. They started with a Kabbalah Shabbat. This uprising of song and spirit carried through the camp. Within minutes other Jewish families from surrounding campsites came through the newly constructed gates and were welcomed by their fellow Jewish scouts. Together with participants from other packs and troops, they all lit Shabbat candles together signifying the end of their work. They then had the opportunity to participate in “Scout Sabbath” a special nationwide Maariv service for all Jewish scouts. For Scouts in Florida, it is held each year at Scoutmaster’s. Troop 18 supplied the Oneg Shabbat and encouraged all to join in a Kiddush.
After morning Shabbat services
held in the campsite, the Troop and Pack participated in activities that aligned with Shabbat and helped by volunteering to guard and watch over areas for safety. While the scouts participated in the events the Judges reviewed their work. Adult leaders greeted the judges and shared some information about Shabbat and some of the additions needed in the campsites to keep the Sabbath. For most visitors, this is the first time they may have seen an Orthodox Jewish encampment or seen how Shabbat is kept.
Twilight was approaching, and the sounds, smells, and light of the
Havdalah service were rising through the air. The scouts were tittering with anticipation for the awards ceremony to find out how they fared. They gathered with all the participating troops and packs at the ceremony and waited. First was the Pack Awards. The top 3 overall campsites were to come to the stage. The announcer called two packs and then, “Pack 18 come to the stage!” With a roar, the Cub Scouts rushed to the stage.
The announcement came, and Pack 18 became the overall campsite winner. They accepted the award with jumps and hoots and were congratulated by their Troop when they returned to their seats.
The Troops were then announced and once again the number 18 was called. It was the Troop’s turn to rush and jump to the stage knowing they made the top 3. With a nervous group embrace, the Troop waited for the standings on the giant stage. Then they heard their number, 18, Chai, meaning Life. They too reached the pinnacle with first place overall. Their exuberance could be contained no more, their sheer jubilation shown bright for all to see. For the first time since their founding, both Troop and Pack had accomplished, in just a few hours, two first-place awards. The pinnacle of a scout campsite that simultaneously upheld Scout BSA ideals with Shabbat Traditions. With their combined love and faith in Hashem and scouting, they brought a Kiddush Hashem through the proud practice of Shabbat.

The Torah will be completed with a gala dinner and community-wide celebration on Thursday, February 22nd, 2024.

“Heroes for Israel” Gala
We all know the Israel Defense Forces is on the front line defending Israel and the Jewish people. But who is on the front line of defense here in the United States? The Zionist Organization of America.
ZOA Florida is thrilled to announce its 2024 major fundraising gala, “Heroes for Israel,” co-chaired by Helene and Lewis Stahl and Barbara and Elgie Gibson. The ZOA gala will take place on Sunday evening, March 17, 2024, at the Orlove Auditorium on the JCC Davie Campus.
We invite you to join us and learn more about how the ZOA is leading the fight for the safety and security of Israel and the Jewish people, including on Capitol Hill, on college campuses, and in the courts.
We are privileged to be honoring Chris Ruddy, CEO and President of Newsmax Media Inc.; U.S. Congressman Brian Mast; U.S. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik; U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, and ZOA National Board Member and Vice Chair, Paul Tartell, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Special guests include ZOA National President Morton A. Klein, who is widely regarded as one of the leading Jewish activists in the U.S.;
Consul General of Israel in Miami Maor Elbaz-Starinsky; and special elected officials.
Chris Ruddy, founder of Newsmax, will receive our Zionist Hero Award. Chris has been an outstanding supporter of Israel and the Jewish people. He ensures that the news delivered by his network tells the truth about the Arab war against Israel. ZOA is proud that Newsmax has acknowledged the ZOA as one of the top charities to support for Israel. Previous recipients of the Zionist Hero Award are Mark Levin, former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
Congressman Brian Mast, who will be receiving ZOA’s Dr. Bob Shillman Zionism Award, has been on the front line of defending Israel’s right and obligation to protect itself. In 2010, during Congressman Mast’s service in the U.S. Army and his deployment in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device explosion resulted in the loss of both of his legs and one of his fingers. That didn’t stop him, however, from continuing to fight for what he believes in: freedom,
democracy, and the mutual respect of all people. Congressman Mast went on to volunteer alongside the Israeli Defense Forces.
Paul Tartell, M.D., F.A.C.S., ZOA National Board Member and a National Vice-Chair, will receive our Pillar of the Community Award. Paul is so dedicated to the ZOA’s work and is constantly looking for ways to help us grow and succeed. We are fortunate to call Paul a ZOA leader and thankful for his hard work, commitment, and generosity.
The fifth annual ZOA Florida Heroes for Israel Gala comes at a critical time. As Israel- and Jew-hatred is skyrocketing, ZOA’s work has never been as important and necessary. Our Zionist heroes deserve recognition for their unwavering support of Israel and the Jewish people, and for standing up on the side of good against evil.
You don’t have to live in Florida to attend the ZOA gala – everyone is welcome to join us! To buy tickets or purchase a digital ad, go to zoa.org/ floridagala or contact us for more info: fldinner@zoa.org or our Florida Director, Allison Zur, at 203-274-3656.

Navigating the Dynamic South Florida Real Estate Market: Homeowners Insurance
Overview:
The allure of South Florida comes with its unique challenges, especially when it comes to homeowners insurance. It's a complex issue influenced by both natural and man-made factors. Whether you're buying, selling, or currently own a home in this vibrant area, understanding the evolving insurance market is crucial.
Understanding Homeowners Insurance in South Florida:
Unlike other regions where homeowners insurance might be more straightforward, South Florida presents a unique set of challenges. Due to its geographic location, the area is susceptible to a trifecta of threats: flooding, hurricanes (hazard), and wind damage. These factors make obtaining comprehensive coverage more complex and often more expensive than in other states.
staggering analysis highlighted by the Tampa Bay Times revealed that in 2019, Florida accounted for 8% of the nation's homeowners' claims but a disproportionate 76% of its related lawsuits. This litigation frenzy has led to significant financial strain on insurers, with many opting to exit the state's market altogether.
2. Market Consolidation: The exodus of insurers from the Florida market has led to a significant reduction in competition. A handful of companies now dominate, leading to a nearmonopolistic situation where insurers can dictate terms and qualifications. This consolidation has made it increasingly difficult for homeowners to find affordable and comprehensive coverage options.
Conclusion:
In the dynamic real estate market of South Florida, homeowners insurance

Mitigate Risks by making home improvements that enhance resistance to wind and water damage.
The insurance landscape in South Florida is continually evolving. Staying informed about legislative changes, market trends, and insurance products is crucial for homeowners in the region. By understanding the complexities and actively seeking the best coverage solutions, homeowners can protect their investments and navigate the challenges of South Florida's unique insurance market.

Banker,
Sure You Can Buy It. Spend Whatever You Want.
By Shmuel Shayowitz
A man is sitting in the locker room with a bunch of his club friends, when suddenly he picks up the ringing phone and puts it on speaker, “Hi honey, it’s me. I’m shopping on Broadway, and I found a cute leather coat that I love. It’s on sale for only $2,000.00. What do you think?” Without hesitation the man responds, “you know what, I’m feeling very generous today, sure, why not!”
The woman, seeing this opportunity says, “well, I happened to pass by the Lexus dealership and the new model that I had my eye on is out – what do you think?” The man replied, “how much?!” She said, “ummm, it’s $90,000, but -” He abruptly cut her off and said, “Wow, that is a lot, but if we are going to do it, I want all the options – whatever the cost!”
a more troubling reality persists: most households are struggling financially, and an alarming number are living largely on credit.
Thinking that her husband must of just gotten a big raise that she wasn’t aware of, the woman decided to press her luck. “Well honey, if today is in fact my lucky day, do you remember that house that I loved on Main Street - well, its back on the market and they increased the price to $1.8 million.” The man said, “if you really love it, in this market, I think we should go in aggressively at $1.99 million, with a quick close.”
She could barely contain herself –“I love you so much, I will see you later, honey!” The man hangs up the phone, picks it up while looking around and asks, “does anyone know whose phone this is?!”
In a world where the anecdote of a man authorizing extravagant purchases on a stranger’s phone might elicit a chuckle, the underlying truth it mirrors about our society’s spending habits is far from amusing. My fictional story unfolds against a backdrop of an economy that, on the surface, appears to be thriving. Yet, beneath this facade,
The current landscape of consumer debt is a testament to this grim reality, with outstanding balances soaring to historical heights, exceeding $1.5 trillion. This staggering figure underscores a culture of spending beyond means, where the allure of immediate gratification often eclipses the prudence of financial sustainability.
The path to financial stability is not, however, out of reach. With discipline, planning, and the right guidance, individuals can navigate their way towards a more secure financial future. Here are a few impactful tips to help resist the temptation of overspending:
Create and Stick to a Budget: The first step towards financial responsibility is understanding where your money is going. By setting a realistic budget that accounts for all expenses, savings, and debt repayments, you can gain control over your finances and make informed decisions about what you can truly afford.
Distinguish Between Wants and Needs: Before making a purchase, ask yourself whether it is a need (essential for living) or a want (a luxury or nonessential item). Prioritizing needs over wants can help prevent unnecessary spending.
Save for Big Purchases: Instead of putting large expenses on credit, save up for them over time. This approach not only reduces reliance on credit but also instills a sense of achievement once the purchase is made.
Avoid Impulse Buys: Give yourself a cooling-off period before making significant purchases. This time allows you to consider the real value and necessity of the item, potentially saving you from regrettable financial decisions.
In an economy that often masks the financial distress of many, it’s crucial to remember that appearances can be deceiving. Don’t be afraid to ask expert advice from people tapped into the market. It’s not only for substantial commitments like home purchases or debt financing. You would be surprised at how working with experienced financial advisors can provide invaluable market insights and custom tailored strategies to your financial situation for the most basic and overlooked expenses you have.

A Gift Worth Working For
By Shalom Markman
We all know the saying, “when you give you get.” I experienced this in business firsthand this week. I got a DM from someone who wanted to pick my brain a short while ago, interested in my industry.
You can watch YouTube and read blogs. Talking to someone and hearing answers to your own curiosities is a higher level of learning. Before long, I found myself spending more and more time answering the smallest of questions to the most intriguing ones from this individual. I could tell this guy would one day be an Allstar.
inquiries,” I thought.
My new protégé, Isaac then let me know that he was looking into joining a competitor of mine. What would a normal reaction from us look like after hearing this news? Although I wasn’t sharing trade secrets, I could’ve closed up and held all future conversations close to my heart. Instead, I was genuinely happy for him and continued to give my time and help him with all his industry related questions. I didn’t think much of it. He was trying to figure himself out and I was happy to share my knowledge and help him.
Over the last few months, our communication all but stopped together. I didn’t think much of it. “If he needs me,” I thought, “he’ll be back in touch.” I didn’t allow the time for it, though. I was going through recent correspondences and decided to see how his new job was coming along. “Maybe he even has additional
That other opportunity didn’t pan out. “Could I work for you” Isaac asked? I was honored. That’s not where I saw our initial question and answer sessions to be going. I’m honored to have just finished the paperwork and now have him as a referral partner. This allows him to learn the ropes, bring in potential clients, and have me do the closing on the accounts. In return, he takes half of the account, on a residual and never-ending basis, while I do all the work, and there’s plenty of it, even after a new client is boarded. In return, he receives a monthly deposit, continually, on each client that’s processing transactions.
Just yesterday, I got a call from my company. They let me know of an individual who reached out and will eventually be looking to be a more official agent in the future. This individual mentioned that he’s working with me right now and that I practically brought him onto their doorstep.
This was Isaac. My company had called to let me know that when this individual does graduate into a full-time agent from his current status of referral partner, I’ll be getting continuous commissions on every account Isaac brings in, even without my involvement on those future accounts.
They say there are two rules for success: number one, never reveal everything you know. Number two.
I can’t say I agree. It doesn’t add up to my value system. There is one rule to be successful in my books and it applies to whatever it is that we do: be a giver. It plays out in many different forms. I get calls and messages weekly from those who want to pick my brain on sales. I also get calls and messages weekly from those that want to pick my brain on how the credit card processing industry works.
As was exemplified here, this includes those who would be considered my “competition.” I don’t hold back from sharing my knowledge. I don’t keep track, but I have no doubt that much of my personal success in business has come through making the other a priority, first. But maybe that’s rule number two.

Binas Halev High School GIRLS’ GOT TALENT
(Courtesy of Binas Halev High School) On February 11, 2024, Binas Halev High School hosted an exhilarating Girls Got Talent event, showcasing the diverse talents of female teens from across central Florida. From captivating dance routines to soulful musical performances and powerful spoken word poetry, the evening was filled with electrifying displays of creativity and skill. With its vibrant atmosphere and uplifting sense of community, the event brought together girls from different schools, inspiring all who attended and leaving a lasting impact on the audience.
YB: What types of talents were showcased during the event, and were there any standout performances that particularly impressed you?
INTERVIEW WITH MRS.
SARAH GRAZI BY YAFFA BREIER (10TH GRADE)
The Behind-The-Scenes Magic
YB: What was the motivation behind organizing Binas Halev Girls’ Got Talent?
SG: This event could not scream more “Binas Halev.” Giving girls a stage to shine for their own individual talent while supporting the incredible Chesed organization, Chai Lifeline, embodies the core values that Binas Halev is built on.
YB: What was the process like for selecting and preparing the performers for the talent show?
SG: The whole process was really a lot of fun. We sent out various flyers
all across central Florida and sought out adults who had done this when they were younger. We simply looked for people who had already found their talent and said, “Who do you know that’s young, who can aspire to be like you one day?” And they recommended a lot of our talents for the show.
SG: We had a lot of different talents. We were captivated by a contemporary dancer, a highly energetic hip-hop dancer, starbound singers, chilling musicians, and slam poets. That, I think, is so unique. You really don’t see poetry on stage because a lot of our productions tend to be dance & songs, and maybe a little bit of drama. But, we were able to showcase some talents that are less widely performed. I think the girls really liked that.
YB: I have never been a part of something like this before. What drove you to make this event for the girls of our community?
SG: I wanted to create a space for the young women in our community to be able to showcase the talents that can sometimes go unnoticed. Girls can feel empowered by being on stage in general. But, standing on stage alone, where she is front and center, and then getting to hear the crowd cheer for her really shows them that they have a presence. It shows them that they are capable of shining brightly, and their confidence and abilities are deserving of celebration and support.
YB: How do you believe events like
P.52 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM COMMUNITY NEWS
the Girls’ Got Talent contribute to the overall South Florida community and its atmosphere?
SG: I think one of the best parts about it was that students came from eight different schools. This is one of the first events in South Florida that actually had a venue for girls to meet girls that aren’t in their school and have an opportunity to socialize with as much unity and Achdus as possible.
YB: Were there any challenges or obstacles encountered during the planning or execution of a talent show? And if so, how were they overcome?
SG: Probably one of the biggest challenges was finding a venue that could really excite the crowd while also incorporating a fun environment with lots of time for socializing. One of our goals for the event was creating an inviting place for the ENTIRE South Florida community to join together, and having time for this was vital to the success of the event. Temple Moses had both!
YB: How do you envision the impact of the Girls’ Got Talent extending
beyond the event itself, both for the performers and the broader school community?
SG: Something that stood out about these performers, immediately after the show, win or lose, they came and said, “When are we doing this next time? How are we going to get more girls, how are we going to broadcast this further?” One person in particular, a trauma therapist, came over and said, “I’ve never seen such a healthy outlet for girls and what you did for them is going to last forever.”
YB: What feedback have you received following the event?
SG: I went to another school that I work at, and I was eavesdropping on some of the fifth graders, I heard them whispering to each other “Did you go to the Girls’ Got Talent?”, “I can’t believe I missed it”, “I’m definitely gonna make sure I go next year because my sister’s gonna be on stage.” It was a fun way for girls to really look at themselves from a different perspective, and the feedback was so positive.
YB: Looking ahead, are there plans to continue hosting similar events
in the future? And if so, how do you envision them involving or improving?
SG: We are aiming to showcase at least two to three stages next year. We would start with auditions, continue with round one, and then end with the finalists on stage. This way, the girls who were in the first two rounds can come and enjoy the rest of the experience.
YB: I see you chose to give a percentage of the proceeds to Chai Lifeline, why did you choose to target that organization?
SG: Yes, we wanted to ensure that while GGT was created to enable girls to show their personal greatness, the girls remember that we are part of Am Yisroel and must always think beyond just the self. Chai Lifeline is one of the most incredible organizations that are committed to helping families impacted by medical crises and trauma. The great work that they do is truly applaudable, and it was such a pleasure to be able to give to them as they have given to so many others.

Kosher Recipes Made Easy
By Jamie Geller
28MIN DURATION 20MIN COOK TIME 8MIN PREP TIME 6 SERVINGS
GRILLED STEAKS WITH CHIMICHURRI
Chimichurri originally hails from Argentina and is a great sauce for marinating or serving with grilled meat. The classic base mix is a combo of minced parsley, oregano, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, and red pepper flakes. When I’m short on time, I use a mix of frozen cubes of chopped parsley, basil and cilantro—cutting the prep down to less than 10 minutes.
INGREDIENTS
• 1/3 cup (or 6 frozen cubes) chopped parsley
• 1/4 cup (or 4 frozen cubes) chopped basil
• 1/8 cup (or 2 frozen cubes) chopped cilantro
• 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
• 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
• 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped
• 3 cloves fresh garlic, finely chopped
• 1 tablespoon dried oregano
• 1 tablespoon chili flakes
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1½ pounds boneless Delmonico or Club Steak, at room temperature
PREPARATION
1. Combine herbs in a medium bowl with olive oil, vinegar, onions, garlic, oregano, chili flakes, salt and pepper and stir well. Set aside. (If using frozen cubes of herbs, first combine the cubes in a small strainer and let drain while they defrost. Once cubes defrost, combine with remaining ingredients.)
2. Grill steak over preheated grill on high heat for 8 to 10 minutes per side for medium rare and let rest 6 minutes before slicing. Cut into ¼-inch thick slices and drizzle liberally with chimichurri.
3. Serve immediately.
