LET’S GO BEHIND THE LENS WITH BOCA RATON FILMMAKER MARVIN SAMEL
Running one of the largest premium cigar companies in the world is hard, but co-writing, producing, and directing your very first film – some could say even harder. Boca Raton’s own, Marvin Samel, learned that while directing his debut film iMordecai. “I feel like I had to get this story out. After the birth of my twin daughters, it should have been the happiest time in my life but around the same time my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I was in a deep depression and turned to writing down vignettes about my father Mordecai, and after a while I felt there was a cinematic feel to these characters,” Samel said.
Prior to directing iMordecai, Samel had never stepped foot on a movie set. “I was a cigar maker. I had a kiosk in the World Trade Center with my fraternity brothers. We had a factory in Nicaragua and continued to expand before selling Drew Estates in 2014. So, when it came to making a movie, I thought how hard can this be?” He turned to researching screenwriting through classic films like Good Will Hunting, Terms of Endearment, and Almost Famous, for inspiration, “but it was much harder than I could have imaged. Bringing on an experienced team of writers and producers helped bring my vision to life,” he said.
That vision came to life in a big way as iMordecai won the Audience Award at the 2022 Miami Jewish Film Festival and will release in South Florida theaters this February (2023). “This is a love letter to South Florida. I could
P12 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM
have filmed in another state, but it didn’t feel right. I wanted every shot to have a connection to my parents and our story”, Samel said.
iMordecai tells Marvin’s true story about his 80-year-old Jewish father (Mordecai) who must now face the realities of a modern world, by navigating his first iPhone. The film, which was shot in South Florida, showcases many iconic locations throughout including Lincoln Road, Aventura, Sunset Place, and more, which gives Floridians a sense of connection. That along with the incomparable cast of Emmy-Winning actor Judd Hirsch (Taxi), Academy-Award nominee Carol Kane (Hester Street), and SAG Award winner Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), makes the film incredibly genuine and credible. The film tackles many heavy topics including the Holocaust, Alzheimer’s, and family issues but does so in an uplifting and heartfelt manner. “It’s about resiliency and overcoming life’s obstacles,” Samel
commented. In fact, the creative manner in which Samel captures the essence of a hardship through animation is some of the most effective filmmaking. Mordecai who escaped Poland as a child has undoubtedly endured tough times but nonetheless has never lost his zest for life.
“I hope when people see the film they can relate to the characters and say to themselves that’s my father, or uncle, or brother.” The mix of comedy and heart that is iMordecai is really what makes this story special. At times the situations are almost too outrageous to believe but it works because the characters are believable, and the story is built on the truth of Marvin’s life. “I actually had to tone Mordecai down for the film,” Samel said while laughing.
iMordecai is coming to South Florida theaters this February. If you’d like to follow along with the film’s journey, please visit www.imordecai.com.

MEDITERRANEAN STEAKHOUSE TO OPEN IN HOLLYWOOD
by Adam Samuel
A new steakhouse is coming to Hollywood! Opening January 19th, Liam’s Steakhouse will be serving up dry-aged steaks and Turkish kebabs. The restaurant is glatt-kosher and the menu has been created by renowned Chef Kayham Aken, who is committed to offering guests a true taste of Turkish cuisine. Liam’s Steakhouse is created and helmed by Albert Shay, and he is eagerly gearing up for the restaurant’s opening.
Shay owns restaurants in New York, but was inspired to open a restaurant in Florida after noticing a lack of steakhouses in the area. The reason he decided to make it a Turkish steakhouse is due to the unique flavor opportunities such a cuisine presents. There is no restaurant like it, and in fact, Liam’s Steakhouse will be the first kosher Turkish steakhouse in America.
“Right now, we’re just getting everything ready ahead of our opening day,” Shay shared. “There’s a lot to be done, but we’re really excited to finally start having guests. I’ve tried all of the menu options, and I have to say, they’re really something special. We can’t wait for you to come and try them out.”
Some of the signature dishes of Liam’s Steakhouse include tomahawk steaks, New York strip steaks, and their kebabs. All their meats are dry-aged in-house, and the restaurant is built so that guests are able to see into the kitchen to watch their meals be prepared.
“The restaurant is full of dry-aging cabinets so that guests can literally select the exact cut of meat they will be served,” Shay continued. “The meat is then cooked over an open flame using Turkish spices. It gives the food a great fragrance that you can’t really describe until you’ve experienced it yourself.” Shay discovered the restaurant’s chef while still in the discovery stages of creating the steakhouse. Upon meeting Chef Aken, Shay says they hit it off well and he managed to convince the
chef to sign on to work at the restaurant. “It’s been great collaborating with our chef,” Shay continued. “He’s extremely talented, and has put together a menu that really embraces Turkish flavors. Some of the things he’s done are incredible, and he’s perfectly captured what I was hoping to achieve with the restaurant.”
Liam’s Steakhouse is meant to be a fine-dining experience, which is another area that Shay found to be lacking within the Jewish culinary world. He says that the experience of eating at the restaurant will be like no other. “Eating at Liam’s Steakhouse is so different from eating at your typical restaurant,” Shay continued. “Every aspect of the meal is elevated to ensure you have a special evening. In addition to the extensive menu, we also have a wide selection of wines and drinks that patrons can buy. Our goal is to give you a night that you will remember.”
Shay and his staff are still hard at work preparing for the restaurant’s opening. Though they are still quite busy, they are excited for guests to finally experience the food and ambiance of Liam’s Steakhouse. “We look forward to serving our guests when our opening day finally arrives,” Shay went on to say.
“In the meantime we are continuing with our preparations, and doing everything we can to make the experience as perfect as possible. We hope you’ll dine with us when our doors finally open!”
Liam’s Steakhouse is located at 5650 Stirling Road. If you have any questions, you can contact Shay by messaging him on WhatsApp at (718) 286-9134.

The owner, Jennifer Sharbani is a recent NY transplant where she was designing her modest swimwear line by the same name for almost 2 years.

As a former executive in the fashion industry working with European fashion houses, Jennifer understands luxury products. She has a sophisticated eye and keen awareness of high quality products. She brings her many years of expertise in the fashion industry to CVRGE bringing you the newest, most tasteful, modern styles!
Not only does she draw the women shopping in her boutique through modest fashion, she also carries a curated mix of modern modest brands from small female Jewish-owned businesses. “When I thought about opening a boutique in Florida, one goal was to create a supportive community of empowered women who love fashion and want more than just clothing you can find anywhere. When you shop at CVRGE, you’re a part of the picture. Small business owners connect to their customers and feel a sense of sisterhood with their (often) loyal clientele. • ½ tsp cream of tartar
DIRECTIONS:
Icing

ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST DRAWS RECORD 750 GUESTS
Florida Legislators, Jewish Community Leaders, Join Orthodox Union’s Teach Florida at Annual Event to Celebrate $60 Million in 2022 Funding for Jewish Day School Families
On Sunday, Teach Florida - a project of the Orthodox Union - hosted its annual legislative breakfast in Davie, Fl. The event drew a record 750 guests, including state legislators
and Jewish community leaders. Teach Florida is a member of the Teach Coalition, the nation’s leading advocacy organization for nonpublic schools.
At the breakfast, Florida Jewish community leaders had an opportunity to connect with elected officials who make critical decisions about state scholarships and security funding. The event also showed
elected officials how important the issue of scholarship and security funding is to the Jewish community and expressed gratitude for the $60 million in 2022 state funding that enabled Jewish families to send their children to Jewish day schools.
Teach Florida advocates for expanded state scholarship funding for all students. Today, Florida leads the nation with more than 242,000

Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Paul Renner addresses the 750 guests in attendance at Teach Florida’s annual legislative breakfast
children receiving a state scholarship - including a record 7,200 in Jewish day schools. More than 50 percent of Florida Jewish day school students receive a state scholarship. Since 2011, Teach Florida has secured more than $253 million in state funding for Jewish day school families.
Among those who spoke at the event were Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Paul Renner; Member of the Florida House of Representatives Chair Randy Fine; Chairman of Teach Florida Dr. Allan Jacob; Executive Director of Teach Florida Danny Aqua; Teach Florida Funding Specialist Malka Rhodes; and Teach Florida Engagement Director Melissa Glaser.
In his address, Speaker Renner said, “With Florida being the third largest state in the country, what we do here in this space when we create our scholarship programs has a powerful influence over what happens in education nationally and even globally,” during his address. “With those dollars, you can have innovative education entrepreneurs that are looking for new ways to serve the needs of the children that are represented by the families in this room.”
House of Representatives Chair Randy Fine said, “What I’m hopeful we are going to do over the next two years is to see that every student gets every dollar for every method of
education that they so choose. When we do that, that is when the mission of expanding school choice will be done.”
Teach Florida Executive Director Danny Aqua said, “Our theme this year is changing lives, one scholarship at a time, because every child matters. We are so grateful to our elected officials for creating and expanding these incredible scholarships that are helping thousands of children in our community.”

NEW KOSHER SHOP ON HOLLYWOOD BEACH BOARDWALK
by Adam Samuel
There’s an unspoken struggle for Jews at the beach. Despite being able to freely enjoy the water and sun, there are almost never kosher food options on the neighboring boardwalk. Thus people often have to bring their own, and by the time it’s served the food is hardly in an appetizing state.
3 Scoops aims to change that. Located on the boardwalk of Hollywood Beach, they’ve partnered with Crepe2Go to serve up a variety of kosher food. In addition to ice cream, they offer pizza, paninis, and even burgers using Beyond meat. 3 Scoops is created and helmed by Ben, Tal, and Matan Morad, three brothers who love ice cream. They are excited to be offering kosher options to patrons visiting the beach.
“We’re very passionate about kosher food,” Matan shared. “We used to come to this very beach as kids, and we always hated that there was nothing we could eat from the restaurants on the boardwalk. We would see other kids enjoying ice cream and pizza, and always feel jealous that we had to eat what our parents brought from home. Now that we’re all adults, my brothers and I decided to come together and fix this problem.”
3 Scoops opened roughly four months ago and is KDM certified–they even carry Cholov Yisroel products. In addition, Crepe2Go is KM certified. “Similar to the brothers, we are passionate about offering foods that Jews wouldn’t have access to at the beach otherwise,” Charlie Rabinovich, Crepe2Go’s owner,
shared. “We are united in our shared hope to create a welcoming environment for Jews where the food is not just kosher, but good. Where we focus on quality and the customer.”
3 Scoops and Crepe2Go are the first kosher-certified restaurants on any boardwalk in Florida. In addition to serving patrons on the beach, they also offer free deliveries on orders over $30 and within a five-mile radius.
“The idea for the restaurant came when my brothers and I were reminiscing and talking about our childhood,” Matan continued. “We were sold pretty quickly on the idea of selling kosher food on the beach, and from there it was just a matter of working out the logistics and
P36 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM
getting the store up and running. Now that we are open things have been going very well.”Matan reports that the store has been embraced by the community and is often full of customers.
“It’s just been great,” Matan continued. “I’ve had people come up and say how amazing it is that they don’t have to go through the hassle of packing their own food to bring to the beach. The best moments for me though are seeing kids getting ice cream cones and enjoying them on the beach. That’s what I would have wanted to do when I was a kid.”
The restaurant boasts an impressive list of ice cream flavors, and has a number of additional offerings, such as milkshakes and sundaes. Matan reports that their signature
dish though is the Razzle, a sort of milkshake with thicker than usual ice cream. Crepe2Go specializes in the Croffle, which is a combination of a croissant and a waffle that comes out hot every time. Their crepes are gluten-free, and both the crepes and Croffles are offered with both sweet and savory options.
“Ice cream is just one of those foods that is perfect for the beach,” Matan went on to say. “It’s sweet and flavorful, and will cool you off against the hot sun. When you really think about going to the beach as a child, there really aren’t as many iconic moments as sitting in the sand, watching the water, and enjoying that perfect ice cream cone. We’re so glad that we are able to offer that experience now to Jews in the area.”

LIVE TV CAPTURES RECORD CROWD CELEBRATING CHANUKAH WITH MIAMI HEAT
Heat TV broadcasts Yoni Z electrifying the ‘Standing Room Only’ Crowd of 20,000 during the in-game Menorah lighting and Half-Time Concert with the Miami Heat
On Tuesday, December 20, the NBA’s Miami Heat faced the Chicago Bulls at the FTX Arena in Miami before its largest crowd of 2022 - a season high record of ‘standing room only’ 19,969 fans.
This was certainly no ordinary evening… The Heat was hosting its annual “ Jewish Heritage Night ” (JHN) in celebration of Chanukah , when the entire FTX Arena transforms into a true “Festival of Lights.”
Highlighting the evening’s celebrations, was the grand menorah lighting ceremony which took place just as the first quarter came to a
close. Arena announcer Michael Baiamonte asked the record crowd to please rise and direct their attention to section 104 where the eight branched Chanukah candelabrum was kindled.
As recording star Yoni Z chanted the menorah blessings, you could hear many in attendance singing along. The ceremony was followed by great cheer and applause from the sold-out arena.
The menorah lighting ceremony as well as the Jewish Heritage Night Half-Time Show featuring Yoni Z, NBA Legend and Miami Heat all-time great Alonzo Mourning and Heat mascot Burnie , was not only shown on the giant screens throughout the arena, it was also broadcast live on Bally Sports Sun, the Heat’s official TV broadcast and their live YouTube streaming seen worldwide.
During halftime, more than five thousand fans made their way to the AT&T East Plaza for an electrifying concert with Yoni Z and DJ Shia , to collect their brightly colored Jewish Heritage t-shirt and enjoy sumptuous glatt kosher food, including traditional holiday jelly donuts and potato latkes.
The menorah was kindled by Mr Sammy Schulman , Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the Miami Heat using the official torch of 2023 JCC Maccabi Games, coming to South Florida in August of 2023.
For those fans choosing to remain inside the arena, the half-time celebration was shown on the giant jumbotron scoreboard, which hangs over the Heat’s court of play.
Unique to this year’s celebration was a custom-made video that the Heat showed to all in attendance and

aired for its tv viewers as well. Produced by Chabad, the beautifully edited video displayed a special holiday message of lighting up the globe with unity and acts of kindness.
The video message was created in honor of the very special year on the Jewish calendar known as “Hakhel,” which means unity and gathering. It was inspired by the “Rebbe,” Rabbi Menachem Schneerson , who inspired one and all to dedicate such Hakhel years with many special events that unite men, women and children, regardless of background or affiliation.
In addition to all the festive holiday activities that the Miami Heat offered its Jewish guests, the arena was literally aglow with Chanukah images and the colorful Jewish Heritage Night logo streaming on its screens and display boards.
In fact, Heat TV announcer Eric Reid and inside announcer Baiamonte often repeated at breaks their best wishes for a Happy Chanukah and reminded fans about it being Jewish Heritage Night and the many festivities taking place.
The logos of the evening’s JHN sponsors, including Publix Supermarkets, ISRACAP and Chabad, were also continuously displayed on screens throughout the arena, Among the evening’s treats for JHN guests was a prime-time basketball game. Students of the highly acclaimed TAG Academy in Cooper City, led by its Educational Director, Rabbi Zalmy Raksin were invited to play an eight-minute scrimmage just prior to the Heat-Bulls tipoff.
Also, select younger fans were thrilled to line the FTX Arena floor to slap the Miami Heat players high-five as they entered the court and to stand beside them while Yoni Z belted out a spectacular rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
Many fans and season ticket holders had no idea beforehand that it was going be Jewish Heritage Night but were so excited to be a part of the joyous celebration. The evening

was truly filled with non-stop Chanukah celebrations and awareness from the moment patrons entered the arena.
In-arena Heat host and entertainer Dale McLean wanted to personally recognize the evening’s organizers : Chabad of Florida representatives Rabbi Pinny Andrusier and brothers Rabbis Chaim and Eli Lipskar , for the incredible energy they brought to the arena that evening. Dale invited them onto the court during a first quarter stoppage of play .
Dale congratulated the Chabad rabbis for their incredible success and expressed how wonderful it was to witness the entire South Florida community coming together for such a joyous celebration and wonderful cause.
“That’s exactly what the messages of Chanukah and Hakhel are all about,” agreed Rabbi Pinny.
