Nefesh B’Nefesh Closes 2023 with 720 North American Olim Amidst Iron Swords War The last week of 2023 alone brought 200 new Olim, with nearly 4,200 requests to open Aliyah files in the last quarter, an increase of over 120% compared to 2022

(Courtesy of Nefesh B’Nefesh) The last week of 2023 alone brought 200 new Olim, with nearly 4,200 requests to open Aliyah files in the last quarter, an increase of over 120% compared to 2022 Jerusalem, December 31, 2022 — Nefesh B’Nefesh, in cooperation with Israel’s Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, The Jewish Agency for Israel, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael and JNF-USA, has recorded 720 newcomers who arrived in Israel since the onset of the war, with 200 of them landing just in the last week of 2023. In the last quarter, 4,175 requests to open Aliyah files were submitted by individuals and families interested in making Israel their new home, in comparison to 1,985 in 2022. 3,709 of these individuals plan to make Aliyah from North America (as opposed to from within Israel as part of the “Guided Aliyah” process), which is a 142% increase compared to last year. Deeper analysis of the data has shown that the main reason for the increase in Aliyah interest is due to Zionism (50%), while the issue of Antisemitism drives only a small amount of the applicants (6%). “The significant number of new immigrants to Israel during the Iron Swords War and the tremendous increase in requests to open Aliyah files are an important demonstration of Zionism and a beautiful expression of solidarity with the country, providing us with a much-needed boost to our morale,” said Minister of Aliyah and Integration, Ofir Sofer. “Together with our partners at The Jewish Agency for Israel and Nefesh B’Nefesh, we are working to improve the absorption process by easing the bureaucracy as well as helping with Hebrew learning and job placements. We believe that full integration of the newcomers will contribute greatly to Israeli society and economic growth.” In total 3,020 individuals from North America have made Aliyah in 2023. Among the newcomers who arrived this year with the assistance of Nefesh B’Nefesh are 545 families, 616 children, 958 single men and women, and 432 P. 1 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

retirees. The average age of Olim over the last year is 32 years old, with the oldest being 100 and the youngest a 3-month-old baby. The Olim came from all over North America, most notably New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, Maryland, and Ontario. The most sought-after destinations of the Olim this year were Jerusalem, Tel AvivYafo, Beit Shemesh, Netanya, and Ra’anana. “Our Olim never cease to amaze us as they prove their commitment to fulfilling the Zionist dream of making Israel their home,” said Tony Gelbart, Co-Founder and Chairman of Nefesh B’Nefesh. “These individuals have not only remained steadfast in their desire to make Aliyah despite the war and escalating regional tensions but have felt an even stronger impetus to do so out of a profound sense of connection and solidarity with the Jewish people and our homeland. In light of the significant surge in Aliyah submissions, we are entering 2024 with optimism and, together with our partners, are prepared to welcome every individual who chooses the State of Israel with open arms.” The Olim who arrived in Israel in 2023 hold a variety of occupations, the most prominent of

which is the field of medicine. In 2023, 65 doctors and 28 nurses arrived in Israel, most of whom began the process of converting their medical licenses during the annual Nefesh B’Nefesh ‘MedEx’, established to expedite the license conversion process and enable the medical practitioners to swiftly integrate into Israel society upon their arrival. “Aliyah in these times is another expression of the partnership of world Jewry in building, and now in rebuilding, the State of Israel,” said Chairman of The Jewish Agency, Maj. Gen. (res.) Doron Almog. “I embrace each and every one of the Olim who are building their lives in Israel these days and call on all of Israel to receive them with love and open arms. The Jewish Agency will continue to work, together with its partners in Israel and around the world, to strengthen the resilience of Israel’s society as a whole.” In addition, 231 young individuals who made Aliyah in 2023 will serve as lone soldiers in the IDF as part of the FIDF-Nefesh B’Nefesh Lone Soldiers Program, and 35 young women will be lone national service volunteers with the “Ori” Program.

About Nefesh B’Nefesh (www.nbn.org.il): Founded in 2002, Nefesh B’Nefesh, in cooperation with Israel’s Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, the Jewish Agency for Israel, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael, and JNF-USA, strives to facilitate and celebrate Aliyah, advocate for Olim, and education towards a stronger connection to Israel. By minimizing financial, professional, logistical, and social obstacles, Olim are able to actualize their dreams and continue building a stronger Israel. The support and comprehensive social services provided by Nefesh B’Nefesh to its over 75,000 new immigrants have ensured that 90% have remained in Israel.

Florida Attorneys Encourage “Faith-Based Resolutions” in Jewish Community (Courtesy of law firm of Stok Kon + Braverman & Kollel Zichron Michal) In a groundbreaking initiative, the law firm of Stok Kon + Braverman has partnered with Kollel Zichron Michal of North Miami Beach, Florida, to promote the use of Bes Din (Jewish law courts) for alternative dispute resolution. This collaboration under the auspices of the Bes Din Maysharim in Lakewood, New Jersey, marks a significant step in integrating traditional Jewish legal principles with contemporary legal practices, particularly in the area of conflict resolution. The Bes Din system offers a unique alternative to the standard civil court procedures. Rooted in ancient Jewish law, these courts are known for their ethical and moral approach to dispute resolution. The process is typically quicker, less expensive, and considered a more brotherly and amicable way to bury the hatchet than the often lengthy and adversarial nature of civil litigation. Bes Din proceedings are conducted by a panel of Dayanim (judges) who are well-versed in Jewish law and its practical application to modern-day scenarios. Their decisions are not only legally binding but are also driven by a strong sense of community. Led by its principals, Robert A. Stok and Joshua R. Kon, Stok Kon + Braverman’s collaboration with Kollel Zichron Michal aims to raise awareness and educate the community about the benefits of using Bes Din. The partnership is excited to announce the second year of its T4 Business Halacha Initiative. This was created to emphasize that the 4th Tur volume of the Shulchan Aruch, Choshen Mishpat – the oftenoverlooked business portion of Jewish law – is just as central to living a proper Torah life. Business is not “just business,” as they say. Rather, our yiras Hashem (awe of our Creator) is best and most manifest in how we choose to conduct ourselves with our business and money. The T4 Initiative includes a series of educational programs and symposiums orchestrated by the Kollel under the P. 1 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

command of the Roshei Kolle, Rabbi Yakov Tzvi Bleger and Rabbi Ahron Dovid Singer, focusing on the principles of Jewish law and the real-world functioning of the Bes Din. These sessions, including a Choshen Mishpat Chaburah of local shul Rabanim, are presented by distinguished Talmidei Chachamim and Dayanim from around the world and are designed to inform lawyers, business professionals, and community leaders about the intricacies of the Bes Din process and how it can be applied to various types of matters and disputes, including commercial and neighborhood conflicts. The T4 Initiative seeks to incorporate

principles of Halacha into secular business practices and to infuse those practices with legally-binding and Halachicallycompliant agreements such as wills, trusts, real estate contracts and other business agreements. The goal is to harmonize secular and Jewish law in structuring legal arrangements so that business leaders can consistently navigate both the secular legal landscape and Torah law. With Hashem’s help, the hope is that the pioneering model of the T4 Initiative will be replicated in cities across the globe. Please feel free to contact the firm or Kollel for more information or to get involved.

South Florida Woman Revolutionizes Mikvah Observance By Sara Speilman

A resident of Hollywood, FL has been using technology to revolutionize mikvah observance. The founder of MikvahCalendar. com and MikvahRSVP, Rivkah Bloom never stops researching, innovating and making mikvah technology available to ever-growing demographics. Bloom is a graduate in Computer Science from MIT and an Orthodox mother of five. Since its release as a website in 2009, then as an app in 2012, MikvahCalendar.com has functioned as a modern, user-friendly resource for couples endeavoring to follow the age-old Jewish laws of family purity. Bloom, along with another MIT graduate, who wishes to remain anonymous, created an innovative website utilizing principles of both design and utility, combined with the latest halachic guidelines. Working with Rabbonim from all sectors of the Jewish world to codify these laws into a programming framework, they have created a system that will automatically do the work for users. This includes features such as times and dates automatically calculated and explained, email and SMS reminders, estimated ovulation reminders, print friendly format for personal records and is available in five languages (English, Hebrew, French, Spanish, Russian.) Rabbi Fischel Jacobs, the author of “Family Purity—Guide To Marital Fulfillment,” praised the app. “Expanding to include these extremely complex areas of law, halacha, further establishes MikvahCalendar.com as one of our generation’s greatest Torah innovations,” he said. Since the website’s inception, the founders have continually pushed themselves to find ways to make the site more user-friendly and technologically advanced. MikvahCalendar.com utilizes unprecedented technology to solve for a complicated matter that even experienced rabbis grapple with, that of kavuah, regular patterns. P. 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

Over the past few months, Bloom has helped even more couples calculate their important dates and times by bringing the app to the insular Satmar community. “We were contacted about a year ago by Satmar members of the community to add a preset Satmar option to our Rabbinic options,” Bloom said. “We already had many different customs: Ashkenaz, Sephard, and Chabad,” Bloom explained. “But at their request, we added the Satmar custom. Since this option became live, the Satmar and Belz communities have been spreading the word about the availability of MikvahCalendar.com to their members.” The app is compatible with kosher phones or filters; users can ask for it to be added to their whitelist and there are some kosher phone companies that have even added Mikvahcalendar.com, which offers the ability to fully customize the calculations according to any Rav or choose from different preset options. Examples include Rabbi Willig, a Roshi Yehivah at Yeshivah University, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who is a major sephardik posek, Rabbi Heller from Crown Heights, which calculates according to Chabad, or Rabbi Binyamin Forst for a more Litvish view. “We had people reach out to us from all these communities and ask us to include their major posek in order that their users could choose that route to be able to calculate,” Bloom said. “Rabbonim and Kallah teachers use MikvahCalendar.com as a visual aid when they are teaching the newly engaged,” Bloom said. “We have slides and special accounts for the teachers that reset each time they login so that they can start fresh with each student. Additionally, different Kollels have contacted us to use the app as a resource to use when learning the laws of Niddah.” Until recently, Bloom’s app helped couples

throughout the Jewish world who were already mikvah observant. Following the tragic events of October 7th, she launched a campaign called “The six month Eretz Yisroel initiative” to encourage Jewish couples that have not yet decided to keep Taharat Hamishpachah to make a six month commitment to do so. “I wanted to do something for Israel, something which would strengthen the core of Am Yisroel,” Bloom said. She offered a promotion of six free months use of the app for those who committed to six months of Taharat Hamishpachah observance for the first time. Bloom put a pitch out on social media to those who would commit to increasing and enhancing their observance of Taharat Hamishpacha to strengthen and empower all Jews. She wrote: “Some of us, like our heroic soldiers, are called on to actively fight and protect our nation. Others have taken up the fight on college campuses, social media platforms and in political arenas. All of us are called upon to strengthen our connection to Hashem and the special sanctity of our people.” As our nation is compared to one body, Bloom believes that by banding together and strengthening our commitment to this essential mitzvah it will result in an increase of Jewish continuity. “Our Rabbis say that Mikvah observance saves lives,” she said. Bloom also is the co-founder of MikvahRSVP, an innovative shared technology, which is now being used in Mikvahs throughout the world, including many in South Florida. It is a Mikvah reservation and internal management system. Mikvahs can choose to install tablets in each preparation room so that women can choose to listen to music, to request supplies, to call an attendant, go over the checklist or to indicate when they are ready.

Dopamine, Grit, and How to Accomplish Your New Year’s Resolution By Dr. Ezra Miller We all set goals, yet following through with them isn’t always a walk in the park. How often have we set New Year’s resolutions, only to forget about them by December? Turning ideas into actions is undeniably challenging, but understanding motivation and the process of taking action can be the key to accomplishing our aspirations. Dopamine, a hormone naturally produced in our bodies, is pivotal in comprehending motivation and drive. Although often associated with feeling good, its primary role is motivation. Dr. Anna Lembke, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, highlights, “Dopamine is about wanting, not having.” When our dopamine levels dip, we feel less motivated, lethargic, and derive less pleasure from our daily pursuits. We’ve got a limited supply of dopamine, and certain activities can impact it. Healthy routines like exercise, good nutrition, and deep, high-quality sleep regulate dopamine levels, ensuring a sustained level of motivation. Consider dopamine like a wave pool—our daily activities cause fluctuations in its levels. However, certain quick, easy pleasures such as alcohol, drugs, or, even more simply, excessive junk food, can cause an overflow, resulting P. 2 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

in a sharper decrease afterward. This overflow might lead to reduced motivation and a stronger tendency towards addictive behaviors. To replenish our “dopamine wave pool,” obtaining deep sleep and maintaining healthy behaviors are crucial to restoring it to its baseline. Apart from high-quality sleep, exercise, and proper nutrition, several other activities can refill our “dopamine wave pool.” Viewing early morning sunlight for about 10 minutes upon waking up can significantly increase dopamine, boosting motivation and focus for the day. Conversely, exposure to bright lights at night will impact our brains to drastically reduce circulating dopamine levels. Avoiding overhead lights and screens until the morning helps improve available dopamine levels as well as ensuring you get a better night’s rest. Another way to increase dopamine and motivation is through cold exposure—like taking a one to three-minute cold shower in the morning. Embracing discomfort safely can raise dopamine levels for hours, leading to better decision-making, longterm motivation, and willpower. This interaction doesn’t just enhance longterm motivation; it can also improve our willpower over time.

Similarly, there’s a brain region called the “anterior cingulate cortex” that grows when we do things we don’t want to. This does not simply occur with difficult tasks but rather with difficult tasks that we specifically do not want to do. As Nike famously puts it, “just do it”— this grit and determination matters, even when motivation seems absent. If however, we avoid these tasks, the anterior cingulate cortex shrinks back down. Action, even without immediate motivation, contributes to progress. Therefore, facing tough, undesirable tasks strengthens our willpower, fostering our capacity to achieve even more. Life is about choices, and not deciding is a decision in itself. Avoiding decisions weakens our willpower, while making active, tough decisions fortifies it. By embracing healthy habits, confronting challenging tasks, and committing to our goals, we build long-term motivation and achieve success in every area we choose. It’s a combination of so many things – the way parents send a child off, and the way teachers greet them at Yeshiva. It’s a combination of learning priorities from the lessons in Yeshiva and then watching them play out at home. It’s when a child isn’t only taught – but sees, hears, and absorbs – the priorities, behaviors, and characteristics of constant growth. Yeshiva. Together YTCTE is raising a generation that knows that Yiddishkeit is most important, and will do whatever it takes to keep growing. This year marks the celebration of 40 years of that chinuch partnership, and YTCTE’s Annual Gala on Sunday, January 14, 2024, aptly named “Chelkeinu - Our Partners,” emphasizes the integral role that each member of the Yeshiva family plays in the shared responsibility of the chinuch of our community’s children. It transcends the classroom walls, representing the combined efforts of every parent, Rebbe, Morah, teacher, staff member and community member in contributing to each individual child’s success. This partnership stands as the

cornerstone of YTCTE’s mission. Together with you, they can ensure that every child feels the excitement and encouragement needed to continue to grow into true Bnei Torah and Bnos Yisroel. Please join the South Florida Jewish community on Sunday, January 14, for an evening in support of our shared legacy of chinuch partnership. ADL is Working with U.S. Communities Keeping People Abreast of Attacks in Real Time In the wake of the October 7 attacks, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) emerged as a vigilant force against the rising tide of antisemitism. With an unwavering commitment to tracking and combating hate, the ADL embarked on a multifaceted mission to keep the public informed and engage with institutions to address antisemitic incidents. One of the notable initiatives undertaken by the ADL was its real-time tracking of antisemitic attacks. Leveraging the power of social media platforms, the organization harnessed the immediacy of online communication to disseminate information swiftly. Live updates on incidents, trends, and emerging threats were shared across various platforms, creating a digital watchdog network that transcended geographical boundaries. By harnessing the vast reach of social media, the ADL ensured that individuals worldwide were kept abreast of the evolving landscape of antisemitic incidents. Through succinct posts and updates, they not only informed the public but also fostered a sense of community resilience against hatred. Social media became a powerful tool not just for awareness but for unity, as individuals from diverse backgrounds joined hands in condemning acts of anti-Semitism. Simultaneously, the ADL recognized the critical role of educational institutions in combating prejudice. In a proactive approach, the organization initiated direct communication with college and university presidents. By engaging with leaders of academic institutions, the P. 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

ADL sought to create a collaborative front against anti-Semitic incidents on campuses. This outreach involved sharing information, resources, and strategies to foster an environment of tolerance and understanding.

The ADL’s engagement with academic leaders went beyond mere information dissemination. Recognizing the influence these institutions wield over shaping minds, the organization collaborated with universities to implement educational programs that addressed the root causes of antisemitism. By fostering dialogue and promoting diversity and inclusion, the ADL aimed to create lasting change within the intellectual hubs of society. In the face of escalating antisemitic incidents, the ADL’s efforts extended to advocacy and public awareness campaigns. The organization utilized traditional media channels, including newspapers and television, to reach audiences beyond the digital realm. Op-eds, interviews, and feature articles highlighted the urgency of addressing antisemitism and emphasized the ADL’s role as a steadfast guardian against hate. The ADL’s work became a beacon of hope for communities facing the brunt of antisemitic attacks. Through its

comprehensive strategy, the organization not only responded to incidents but also worked tirelessly to prevent future occurrences. This proactive stance garnered support from various sectors of society, as individuals, communities, and institutions united in the common cause of eradicating hate. As the ADL’s efforts gained momentum, the organization became a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. By leveraging technology, engaging with educational institutions, and advocating for change, the ADL demonstrated the power of collective action against hate. The fight against antisemitism was not confined to reactive measures; it became a proactive, dynamic movement that sought to reshape societal attitudes and foster a world free from prejudice. In the months following the October 7 attacks, the ADL’s impact rippled through communities, prompting conversations, inspiring initiatives, and fostering a global network committed to combating antisemitism. The organization’s commitment to real-time tracking, engagement with academic leaders, and advocacy underscored its role as a driving force in the ongoing battle against hate. In a world grappling with divisiveness, the ADL stood as a testament to the enduring power of unity, education, and unwavering resolve in the face of intolerance. If you experience or witness an antisemitic incident, please alert law enforcement when appropriate, and ADL at https://adl.org/report.”

Spreading Joy: Sha’arei Bina, Torah Academy for Girls Make Bears and Write Cards for Children of Deployed Soldiers (Courtesy of Sha’arei Bina, Torah Academy) In a heartwarming display of empathy and compassion, Sha’arei Bina middle school and high school came together to create handmade bears and heartfelt cards for children whose fathers were away fighting in a war. The initiative was planned so that the children receive their gifts in time for Chanukah. It aimed to bring comfort and cheer to the young recipients during a challenging time in their lives. The idea took root within the school’s halls, and soon the entire student body, along with teachers and staff, enthusiastically joined the cause. It was a remarkable demonstration of unity and support for families experiencing the hardship of having a loved one deployed in a conflict zone. The project not only allowed the students to showcase their creativity and kindness but also served as a potent lesson in empathy and global awareness. The bears, lovingly crafted with various fabrics and adorned with colorful accessories, were designed to serve as comforting companions for the children, offering them a tangible reminder of the caring individuals thinking of them from afar. The accompanying cards, adorned with heartfelt messages and illustrations, aimed to uplift the spirits of the young recipients and convey a sense of solidarity and support. Once the bears and cards were completed, the school organized the logistics of sending them to Israel, where the children awaited these heartwarming gifts. The act of reaching out across continents to deliver a message of hope and compassion underscored the global nature of the initiative. It also emphasized the importance of fostering connections and understanding beyond one’s immediate community, promoting a sense of shared humanity and interconnectedness. As the bears and cards made their way to P. 3 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

Israel, they carried with them the goodwill and compassion of an entire school community. The initiative served as a poignant reminder of the enduring human spirit and the capacity for kindness and empathy, especially in times of adversity. Sha’arei Bina received an email from Eli Beer, the founder and president of United Hatzalah to express his heartfelt gratitude for the gifts. He told us that 70 of these warm fuzzy teddy bears were distributed to evacuees from Sderot, currently residing in a hotel in Jerusalem. The remainder of the teddy bears were gifted to children whose fathers were called up to reserves on October 7th, and have had to create a new norm, adjusting to life without a present father in their lives. He received notes from the recipients of the gifts and shared them with us; Dear Shaarei Bina, My son is 6 years old. He has been missing his abba a lot; he may not verbalize it often, but I can see that he acts differently since October 7th. His abba was called up on October 7th and has since been in the reserves. We see him every so often, thank G-d, but it’s not the same. Right up until being called into the reserves, he was a very present father. I would be with the kids in the morning, get them out to school, come late to work and he would get home early , pick them up, and play with them until I got home around 16:00. My son particularly has been having a rough time without his abba. When he and his little sister received these teddys, I knew his little sister would be ecstatic, but I figured he would tell me that a teddy bear is babyish. He hasn’t slept with a teddy or played with any type of stuffed animal in years. Since receiving this teddy, it’s been in his bed every night. When I come into his room to give him one last kiss goodnight I find him hugging the teddy ever so tightly while

sleeping. I guess even the toughest , first born boys , need the warmth and softness of a teddy in these crazy times. Thank you for not forgetting about us, and for making my kids feel loved and special over the holiday during this difficult time. “ This is another letter from the social worker, in charge of the families, currently residing in a hotel in Jerusalem who had to up and leave their homes in Sderot. “Dear Shaarei Bina, We received the sweet teddy bears that you sent on Chanukah. They brought so much happiness to the children here. Each and every teddy bear was given to a child, together with the personal note and blessing that was attached to it. Specifically at this time, when the evacuees are residing in a hotel, holidays and shabbatot often intensify the difficulties that they face. This small gift that you gave the children enhanced their mood and put a smile on their faces. I can say that the kids were so happy, and the softness of the teddy bears, their soft fur, provided them with a feeling of warmth and comfort. Thank you so much to all of you! Yehudit, representative of the residents of Sderot currently staying at the Shaarei Yerushalayim Hotel” For Sha’arei Bina students the project was a transformative experience that allowed them to channel their energy and creativity into a meaningful cause. It instilled in them a deep sense of empathy and altruism, showcasing the power of collective action to make a positive impact, no matter how small the gesture may seem. The impact of the initiative extended beyond the act of creating and sending the bears and cards. It sparked conversations about the experiences of families affected by conflict and the ways in which individuals can offer support and solace.

Heroes Redefined By Avi Ciment

(As appeared in the Jewish Link) As a teenager, the walls of my room were adorned with sports paraphernalia, most notably anything Miami Dolphins. As I got older, I realized they were just great athletes and not a whole lot more, and so my interest moved into the field of entertainment. During that period of time I had many autographed photographs of singers I admired such as Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra etc… At a certain point, I realized that none of these people were worth admiring beyond their talent and eventually pictures of family and friends replaced them. It’s funny how your understanding of what makes a hero changes as you get older, and nowhere was that made more clear to me than this most recent attack on our people. Suddenly, my picture of a hero became a little different. The people who shielded their children against the terrorists, those who fought evil, the grandmother who cooked a “last supper” for her captors before their meeting with Allah, not to mention, the entire Israeli army. And as we enter day four of this unwanted war with evil, more definitions of the hero surface. This morning, I got off the phone with my high school buddy Ric of over 35 years who lives in Yerushalayim. He tells me that his daughter’s platoon was ambushed on Saturday, yet B”H, she was away on a training mission that weekend and miraculously avoided the terror. Yet within days, she went back to the very post where all of her friends and fellow soldiers were ambushed. If there was ever a get out of jail card, I think this would qualify, as I know I’d need a few weeks to process the mental trauma endured. But not their daughter. She’s a hero. Where does this strength come from? Turns out the apple doesn’t fall far from P. 3 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

the tree as her dad explained to me, “Avi, this is our home and she’s got a job to do. The buck stops with us. Who’s going to do it if not us?” Wow! And I thought Rambo was tough. Believe me when I tell you that nobody loves their kids more than my buddy Ric, but he, along with his wife Shira, cast aside their own needs for Klal Yisroel’s. Like so many other parents, they have put their money where their mouth is, supporting and nurturing their children’s love of Eretz Yisroel. There’s a bunch of children from our community of Hollywood, Florida and Boca Raton who have served proudly in the IDF, and a great deal of that is due to the teachings of their parents as well as the schools. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes— and ages. Take, for instance, Mike Ripstein, early 50s, who was vacationing in Miami and attending a business conference. He got the call and before you knew it, was back in full gear, armed and ready to serve in Israel’s reserve unit. Sure he could’ve just sent a check, or perhaps nurse an aching something, but heroes don’t roll that way. They’re not looking for excuses. If anything, they’re just looking for a reason. A reason to be put to the test and fight darkness with light. Sometimes that light comes in the form of a soldier, sometimes in the form of a parent worried sick about their loved ones, or sometimes it can be in the form of a man spending $500,000 on tickets for all active duty soldiers flying to Israel. Wow! Such ahavas Yisroel is the perfect antidote for the evil these reshaim (evil ones) perpetrated, yimach shemam (may their memory be erased). Inbar Lieberman, the 25-year-old security coordinator of Kibbutz Nir Am, heard explosions early Saturday, when the terrorists launched their attack. Lieberman rushed to open the armory, distributing guns to 12 other people. She placed her

squad of kibbutzniks in strategic positions across the settlement and set up ambushes that caught the gunmen off guard, killing five terrorists by herself, while the others killed another 20 terrorists. Brothers and sisters of Israel: We are glued to the news, saying Tehillim, sending money and care packages, and praying for God’s good blessing upon the whole nation of Israel. So many of you are showing us through your sheer courage and determination how to trudge on with strength. I can’t tell you how many friends have been tossing and turning and thinking about the pain that you, our brothers and sisters in Israel are enduring. After all, if it’s hard for us in America, how much more difficult is it for you, who are actually dealing with this madness? (I have a slight idea because my daughter just made aliyah and calls me every time a siren goes off.) When you hurt, we may not be there, but a part of us shares in your pain, and we, in some way, are with each and every one of you. The Tehillim and tears we share all connect in some way, and ultimately, with Hashem. K’ ish echad b’lev echad. Indeed we are all one. Please know that while we may not have your photographs hanging on our wall, that hardly stops you from being our heroes. Some years ago, I attended a speech defending Israel in Washington. Bibi Netanyahu was flown in by helicopter, approached the microphone, looked at us and said it best. “Mi k’amcha Yisrael, who is like Your nation, Israel?” Indeed.

SNL Mocks the One Person Defending Jews on Campus By Avi Ciment

(As appeared in The Jewish Link) An open letter to SNL’s kibbutz-born executive producer Lorne Michaels. Dear Lorne, A long time ago, you began your career as a television writer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, before moving to Los Angeles, and eventually getting a shot at producing “Saturday Night Live” in 1975. It’s important to remember the odds of becoming as powerful and rich as you have is a long shot at best. A man who has garnered over 60 Emmys, produces several television shows and films, and has turned names like Sandler, Ferrell, Rock, Belushi, Chase, Aykroyd, Farley, Radner, Carvey and Murphy into very rich and famous people says something about your power. But here’s the thing. Spiderman warned us that with great power comes great responsibility. Now don’t get me wrong. No one loves a hard laugh more than I. In fact, for many years, I was the class clown, making jokes and getting laughs, having spent many hours in the principal’s office or detention. Sometimes I went a bit far but ultimately, I knew where to draw the line. I’m not so sure that you do. Last week, former “Saturday Night Live” star Cecily Strong backed out of playing Representative Elise Stefanik on the show because she was “uncomfortable” with the heavily criticized sketch. You know, the one where you mocked Stefanik, the one person trying to stop blatant hatred of Jews. You could have mocked and castigated University of Pennsylvania President Liz “It depends on the context” Magill, the clown who couldn’t say that calls for genocide against Jews constitute bullying or harassment. Now that, Lorne, would have been funny. But don’t take my word for it. There were many people who were shocked at your decision. Journalist Jake Wallis Simons asserted, “Can’t believe SNL decided to mock those demanding tougher action on Jew-hatred on campus rather than those making excuses for calls for genocide.” Meghan McCain wrote, “There is a 400% P. 4 0 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

increase in antisemitic hate crime since October 7th and SNL thinks it’s hilarious…. This is vile. Vile.” Dr. Sara Yael Hirschhorn wrote, “This is really appalling—NBC, do you think antisemitism is acceptable as the punchline of a joke about American society? This needs to be investigated by the FCC.” Kevin Haggerty wrote in an article, “The disconnect from humor caused by the ‘woke mind virus’ found Saturday Night Live taking heat for a ‘vile’ skit. ‘This is no longer satire. This is propaganda.’” The ADL has tracked multiple “Weekend Update” jokes this season that inappropriately use Jews as the punchline In fact, a few years ago during the coronavirus crisis, host Michael Che “joked” about Israel’s coronavirus vaccine rollout: “Israel is reporting that they’ve vaccinated half of their population. I’m going to guess it’s the Jewish half.” In a statement, the ADL told Fox News that Che “not only missed the mark, but crossed the line—basing the premise of the joke on factual inaccuracies and playing into an antisemitic trope in the process..” Lorne, we all appreciate that ratings are key. But you could have found a dozen things to make fun of, yet instead chose to mock someone who is defending your rights. And Lorne, I think we all know that if the victims of these three morally bankrupt school presidents were not Jewish but Black, that skit never would have aired. Even Al Sharpton, hardly a close friend of Jews, agreed and commented that if this vitriol were directed toward the Black community, buses and protests would immediately line the streets. The question that begs to be asked is: Why? Why do you continually choose to satirize and mock Jews when you are one yourself? Are you like the overweight guy (think Farley) who denigrates himself before others have the chance to, for selfpreservation? Lorne, the NBC office and the Rockefeller Center walls are not immune to mobs of terrorists like the ones who ran through colleges chanting “Death to Jews.” As history has shown us, Hitler didn’t

discriminate between the Jews he gassed. What’s worse, the humor fell flat and opened the door to more haters of Jews. The only people that should have been mocked were the three wolves in sheep’s clothing. Instead, your writers castigated the one courageous woman—U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik—who chose to stick up for Jews when practically everyone else remained silent. And Lorne, she’s not even Jewish. Rather than mock her, you should thank her for her courage in fighting injustices. No one is asking you to give up your $500 million empire. No one is asking you to march in Washington or donate to an Israeli cause. Asking you to stop adding fuel to the fire of antisemitism is not a huge ask. In many ways, God chose to place you in a powerful position to help. To make a difference. But perhaps without intending to do so, you hurt a lot of people who take these threats and attacks very seriously. In fact, we have 6 million reasons to take these actions very seriously. You could follow the lead of other powerful individuals, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, David Schwimmer, Steven Spielberg, Patricia Heaton, Debra Messing, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mayim Bialik, Amy Schumer, Jon Voight, Madonna, Adam Sandler, Michael Rappaport, or the countless others who have chosen to stand up against tyranny and hate. Yet, for some reason, you chose the opposite. Perhaps the most ironic aspect is that you were born on a kibbutz before your parents emigrated to Toronto. Imagine if they decided to stay on that kibbutz. Imagine if your whole family was there on October 7. Ten to one, I’ll bet you it wouldn’t depend on context…

BUSINESS

Patients Pays By Shalom Markman

I received a phone call Monday that started off my work week. It was a call I was hoping for. It had been months in the making. It was an inbound sales call, and it happened because I had practiced what I preach. Jumping back a few months to September, a local Florida business had gotten in touch. They heard what I do and decided to review some internal processing costs together. We had a pleasant conversation getting to know each other, and I learned about their business, while probing their needs. We ended off the call with a game plan. I requested some data, and once received, I would then present their monthly available savings. I followed the dictum of asking for a micro commitment at the end of that call asking if they’d be ok if I followed up in November, assuming they didn’t touch base by then. “That’s fine” they assured. As the next month rolled around, I can’t say I was surprised that they hadn’t yet been in touch. When we get interested in a product, information needs to be available to allow for immediate decision making. Once the information isn’t at hand, that decision gets pushed off, and we, as the consumer, are less likely to act on that initial intuition. Yet, to get a prospect to even pick up the phone or send an email, often requires tremendous resources for any company. Todd Juneau, Co-Founder/CEO of Vuja De Digital, (Jan 2021, Forbs Magazine) elaborates that “ads do not drive sales. Ads P. 4 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

drive awareness, exposure and traffic. Ads tell a story. The brand or the product still has to be good enough to complete the sale.” He continues that “there are no shortcuts. Brands still need to work their way through the marketing funnel.” When the information isn’t at hand, that marketing funnel is now misfiring on its target. In this case, I was relying on my prospect to get me information that would allow me to do my part of the sale. As November approached, I wasn’t surprised that I’d likely be keeping my word and following up instead. After having done so, I waited that entire month and December for a reply. My inbox though, stayed empty. How would you approach this from a sales perspective? What action would you take? While I wasn’t twiddling my thumbs, it was a client that I had really wanted. I followed the advice of Josh Braun, a LinkedIn influencer with over two hundred thousand followers, (that’s a lot for LinkedIn) who talks about how not to get ghosted when booking meetings. He mentions the importance of detaching from the outcome. “First, do your best then let what happens happen without forcing things to happen. In essence, relax and be chilled.” I could have started a follow up campaign for this prospect with a call every two weeks and some texts and emails. But who’s the one who needed me in the first place? It was them who saw my value and understood what I brought to the table. It’s therefore not my

place to rush their decision. I’m not here to change them either. This leads to Josh’s other sales dictum which I applied. “People don’t resist change; they resist being changed. Stop trying to get people to do what you want them to do. Instead, be the arbiter of unbiased information and let people decide for themselves.” And so, came this second week in January 2024, on a sunny Monday morning, while writing my daily LinkedIn content, and actually quoting these two insights from Josh, that my phone rang. You wouldn’t believe who was on the other end. Well, by now you do. It was this company, and they were ready to move a step forward with some follow up questions from our September meeting. They didn’t reach out because they felt that they understood me. It wasn’t about me. They reached out because they felt that I understood them. I had given them the space they had required, and they were now eager to act on the value that I represented. You’ll be surprised how many clients you can bring on when your value and patience have the same lifespan.

The Depleting A.T.M. & How To Increase Your Assets By Shmuel Shayowitz

After spiking during COVID when everyone received government stimulus, the average consumer savings rate is now plummeting, according to new data from the Federal Reserve. It’s simple mathematics; with the cost of living still rising and income not keeping up with inflation, U.S. households are running at a deficit. Anyone with a checking account is familiar with the basic banking premise: withdrawals are only possible after deposits have been made. You cannot withdraw more than you put in without wreaking havoc or being penalized. This fundamental principle holds true for all forms of currency, not just your bank account. Life operates on a system of deposits and withdrawals. At the heart of this concept is the concept of “Actions That Matter” (A.T.M.) Every action you take, every struggle you endure, and every effort you invest in yourself and others is a deposit into your personal A.T.M. The more significant and genuine these actions, the more you accumulate in your account. The goal is to do as many meaningful actions-that-matter to build up your portfolio. Think of your close friendships, family relationships, and professional associations as the assets in your life. They are the beneficiaries of your emotional and social bank account. Like a financial bank account, these relationships require regular deposits to thrive and yield returns. Acts of kindness, support, and genuine interest in others are deposits that pay dividends in the form of trust, love, and support when you need it most. In the professional world, networking is the equivalent of making deposits into P. 4 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

your career’s A.T.M. Every interaction, collaboration, and shared experience is a deposit that can lead to valuable opportunities and growth. Networking is not merely about collecting business cards or social media connections; it’s about building authentic relationships that provide mutual benefit. When you invest in others, they are more likely to invest in you. One of the most valuable deposits you can make in your life is seeking a mentor. Mentorship is like an investment in wisdom and guidance. Mentors are experienced experts who have made significant deposits in their own life’s A.T.M. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experiences is a generous withdrawal from their wealth of wisdom. In return, you can make deposits of your own by showing dedication, respect, and appreciation. Another substantial deposit you can make is into your own personal development. Continuous learning, self-improvement, and honing your skills are like regular contributions into your life’s 401(k). These deposits compound over time, growing your wealth in knowledge, skills, and opportunities. Just as in a financial bank account, overdrawn accounts lead to trouble. In the depleting A.T.M. of life, overextending yourself, neglecting relationships, or failing

to invest in selfimprovement can result in an emptied account. When you need support, advice, or opportunities, you might find that account empty. The bottom line is - keep making deposits, knowing that your actions today will impact the withdrawals you can make tomorrow. The internet is full of complementary articles and hubs to help us achieve “success.” By now, most of us have realized that these tools and resources provide generic information for the general mass. One of the best ways to boost your personal worth and financial assets is to work with mentors and coaches. You cannot underestimate the power of a personal concierge that is there to delve into the details of your particular circumstances and all that it entails. The only way to grow your personal and fiscal net worth is to do actions that matter with the guidance of an expert.

PREPARATION 1. In a large pan, heat up one tablespoon olive oil. Sautee the onion and garlic for a few minutes. Add the peppers and the mushrooms. Cook for about 10 minutes and add the spices. When the vegetables are ready, combine with the cooked rice and adjust seasoning if needed. 2. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 3. Pour the tomato sauce into a large baking dish.
