Father-Daughter Learning Event

The Father-daughter learning event here at Sha’arei Bina Torah Academy for Girls, is a cherished tradition. Every year, on December 25th, all the fathers are invited to come into the school and spend the morning learning Torah together with their daughters. This special event fosters a unique bond between fathers and their daughters while promoting the value of education within the family unit. When any parent comes into the school to actively engage in their daughters’ academic lives, it serves as a heartwarming display of the special connection that exists between a parent and their child. I opened the event by quoting the famous passage in Shema that states ‘Teach them thoroughly to your children and speak of them’ - this central prayer in Judaism emphasizes the significance of learning and imparting wisdom to the next generation. The Posuk, “and we should learn with our children” served as a guiding principle for the morning, setting the tone for an enriching and meaningful experience for both fathers and daughters. As fathers and daughters sat side by side, the timeless words of Torah shared together was not only the transmission of knowledge but to learn torah with your children is about passing on the love and the feeling that you have for torah, how beloved and valuable it is. P 1 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

The atmosphere was imbued with warmth and enthusiasm as fathers and daughters delved into the packet of Mekoros and Torah sources put together by Rabbi Sprung, and the event provided an opportunity for fathers to actively participate in their daughters’ learning journey. The joy and sense of accomplishment that radiated from the fathers and daughters as they worked together was palpable, creating an environment of mutual respect and encouragement. The positive impact of the fatherdaughter learning event extended far beyond the activities themselves. The strong bond between fathers and daughters was evident in the shared laughter, thoughtful conversations, and genuine moments of discovery. As fathers assisted their daughters in navigating new concepts and skills, they not only facilitated their academic growth but also strengthened their emotional connection. The event served as a poignant reminder of the profound influence that parental involvement can have on a child’s educational development. Moreover, the school’s commitment to fostering parental partnership was evident throughout the morning. Teachers and administrators worked diligently to create an inclusive and welcoming

environment, ensuring that fathers felt valued and empowered to take an active role in their daughters’ education. The school’s dedication to promoting fatherdaughter learning events as a platform for meaningful interaction and shared growth underscored the institution’s recognition of the pivotal role that parents play in their children’s academic success. In conclusion, the father-daughter learning event at the school was a testament to the power of parental involvement in education and the enduring bond between fathers and daughters. Through the lens of the Shema’s timeless wisdom, fathers and daughters came together to learn, grow, and connect in a manner that transcended the academic realm. The event served as a poignant reminder of the transformative impact of shared learning experiences and the immeasurable value of a strong, warm, and nurturing parental partnership in a child’s educational journey.

Sugar - Legal Cocaine? By Dr. Ezra Miller

Diabetes is a term often associated with a metabolic disorder affecting how our bodies process sugar. While type 1 diabetes is genetically linked, the majority of cases stem from poor dietary and lifestyle choices, resulting in Type 2 Diabetes. One of the primary factors contributing to diabetes, exacerbated by a sedentary lifestyle, is prolonged excessive sugar intake. This not only leads to substantial weight gain but also fosters a strong addiction, contributing to one of the most prevalent yet preventable diseases responsible for over 103,000 deaths in the United States alone in 2021. Our bodies process sugar by absorbing it into cells via insulin, a crucial hormone. Under normal circumstances, insulin prompts cells to draw in sugar molecules from the bloodstream, storing them for future energy use. However, a significant spike in sugar levels leads to a proportional surge in insulin production. With consistent and prolonged high sugar intake, cells become less responsive to insulin, resulting in reduced sugar absorption and, in severe cases, potential nerve damage among other adverse effects. Excessive sugar consumption often correlates with obesity as well, further compounding concerns regarding health and longevity. P 2 0 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

A further, insidious impact of excessive sugar consumption is its influence on dopamine levels, a hormone governing motivation and goal pursuit. This essential hormone drives our actions and endeavors. Yet, an excessively rapid surge in dopamine from a specific activity or substance, followed by an equally rapid drop, triggers cravings for more. This neurological cycle mirrors addictive behaviors observed with drugs and, as sugar is so readily available, greater consumption can easily lead to even stronger cravings. This self-perpetuating cycle contributes to conditions like diabetes, obesity, and nerve damage, severely impacting our well-being. As severe as side effects from diabetes can be, high sugar intake not only leads to diabetes but also poses various other health risks, including dental issues, heart disease, and even fatty liver disease. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends keeping sugar intake to no more than 24-30 grams of sugar per day. Considering that just one can of Coca-Cola contains 39 grams of sugar, it’s important double check the food label before buying things off the shelf. Furthermore, children aren’t exempt from the adverse effects of high sugar intake, which increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and leads to poor

behavioral choices later in life. A few tactics that one can try to offset sugar cravings, and thereby decrease excessive consumption, can start with replacing sugar with non-caloric sweeteners. While not without other health concerns, they serve as a potential alternative and can aid in transitioning to a healthier diet. Additionally, exercise significantly impacts insulin sensitivity, helping our bodies utilize sugar more efficiently. Moreover, increasing protein intake can reduce sugar cravings by influencing our gut microbiome. Reducing sugar intake and opting for healthier alternatives can help prevent severe health issues later in life and enhance overall quality of life. Prioritizing minimally processed foods, adopting an active lifestyle, and making healthy lifestyle choices can positively influence not just ourselves but also those around us. With these beneficial behaviors in place, we can mitigate potential health risks and positively impact our lives. Ezra Miller is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Personal Trainer, and IDF veteran. He is currently the owner of Empower Fitness and specializes in longevity and injury prevention. For further inquiries, he can be reached at ezra.empowerfitness@gmail.com

BUSINESS

The Greatest Call By Shalom Markman

I got a phone call recently and it blew me away. Not just because it was a potentially large client asking for my services. It was also about the context of the call that continues to make a lasting impression on me, even as I write this. Six months ago, I got a WhatsApp from a family member suggesting I listen to a specific ten-minute daily Bitachon class. Bitachon is Hebrew for reliance. This class, given by Michael Safdi, a highend watch dealer of Patek Philippe watches and time pieces in Manhattan, is about simple reliance in God. The essence of this class is working on not being reliant on anyone. This includes us too. Instead, the objective is to focus our energy on being reliant on just God, Himself, and feeling calm in the process. I was hooked after just one class so I joined the WhatsApp group. It turns out that there are thousands of others just like me that subscribe. After two months of listening daily, I decided to implement a subtle change. I wouldn’t step into the office until I dedicated a few minutes of my morning to listen to this class. It was my way of taking a small step to recognize that although I deal with people on a daily basis, and rely on them too for my success, the real source of my accomplishments is not from the person in front of me. A day this past September, found me grossly involved in my work. I suddenly remembered that I hadn’t yet listened to Michael’s class. In middle of answering client emails, I closed my computer and silence my phone. I didn’t hesitate to start this quick class. It’s also extra quick as I listen on two times speed. I closed my eyes P 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

and internalized every word. When those quick few minutes were up, I still required another two minutes to feel what I had just listened to. I took the liberty. In those two minutes, I received a missed call without a voicemail. I don’t usually call back missed calls from numbers I don’t recognize if they don’t leave a message. If it was truly important, they would have left me a message. I called the Alabama number back anyways for some reason. I was in for a surprise. It was a large company that somehow got my number and wanted to use my services. They weren’t shopping around. They had already decided on it from a referral, and simply wanted to get started with the necessary paperwork. During my workdays, I take an hour and essentially cold call businesses who I think would be a good fit for the services that I offer. I can spend weeks and even months without those cold calls producing an actual sale. But here I was, taking seven

minutes out of the middle of my busy day to align my brain and recognize that all my successes are from God and not me. It was during that exact time that a company whose vertical I’ve been after for quite a while called me out of the blue. What a message of humility I had received. I didn’t even need to pick up the phone. This prospect ended up being a very complicated one indeed. Large clients usually are. There were many facets to their organization. All had to be addressed and organized properly for our bank to approve them. Just a few weeks ago, after picking apart their financials, I finally got them approved. They are now a new client. I’m here to remember that it’s not me who gets the credit. The only credit I deserve is for showing up. My message to all of us in business is a simple one. I give business advice weekly while sharing what I believe are winning combinations for business success. However, when dealing with any issue at hand, whether it’s looking to bring on new clients, dealing with current customer issues, or scaling what we’re currently doing to new heights, might all seem larger than us. It is! But it’s not larger than God. He’s the one who created the situation for us in the first place. He’s also the One who’s taking care of it for us. So, relax and recognize that you’re in the best of hands. That’s the real recipe for success. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. He currently lives in Norfolk VA with his family and visits Florida when he gets hungry or brings on a new client. You can find him on LinkedIn.

Financial Fitness: The Top New Year’s Resolution for Americans in 2024 By Shmuel Shayowitz

On New Year’s Eve, Mike, known among his friends for his not-so-healthy eating habits, declared his resolution: “This year, I’m going to eat more greens!” His friends, used to seeing him dodge anything resembling a vegetable, were skeptical but supportive. A week into January, they visited Mike and were astonished to see bowls of green everywhere. “Wow, Mike, you’re really sticking to your resolution!” one friend exclaimed. Mike, grinning, replied, “Absolutely!” But as they looked closer, they realized the ‘greens’ were bowls of green jellybeans, lime-flavored chips, and mint chocolate chip ice cream. As 2024 unfolds, many Americans are making similar resolutions focusing on gaining greens - Dollars, that is! According to a recent Statista’s Consumer Insights survey, Americans are shifting their focus from traditional New Year’s resolutions like exercising more or eating healthier to a more pressing concern: improving their financial circumstances. A Shift in Priorities: Financial Goals Take the Lead In a stark contrast to the typical healthfocused resolutions, 2024 has seen a notable pivot. Financial goals have taken precedence, reflecting a growing awareness of the importance of financial health in achieving overall well-being. This shift is a clear indication of how Americans are re-evaluating their priorities in the wake of ongoing economic challenges and uncertainties. Understanding the Drive Towards Financial Resolutions This change can be attributed to several factors. The economic landscape, marked by inflation, interest rate hikes, and market volatility, has undeniably influenced the public’s mindset. Furthermore, the lingering effects of the pandemic have led many to reassess their financial stability and security. As a result, goals such as saving more money, P 3 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

reducing debt, and investing wisely are now at the forefront of Americans’ minds. The Global Context: Impact of International Conflicts The ongoing conflicts in regions like Russia and Ukraine and Israel’s war against Hamas have significant implications for the global economy. These geopolitical tensions contribute to a sense of uncertainty and instability, affecting global trade and investment patterns. Undoubtedly, the expectations of central bankers to cut rates in a bid to stimulate growth will only increase in such a fragile global climate. This week, we have experienced the start as the Bank of Israel cut its rate for the first time since 2020. The Role of Financial Education and Resources The rise in financial resolutions also underscores the need for better financial education and resources. People are seeking direction on how to manage their finances effectively, from budgeting and saving to investing and retirement planning. The demand for financial literacy guidance and resources has increased as more individuals recognize the importance of being financially informed and empowered. The Impact of Technology on Financial Management Technology is playing a pivotal role in this financial awakening. Budgeting apps, online investment platforms, and financial planning tools have made managing finances more

accessible and user-friendly. This technological revolution enables people to control their financial health more efficiently and effectively than ever before. Beware, however, that financial administration is not a DIY hobby. A Holistic Approach to Well-being: Balancing Health and Wealth While financial goals have taken the lead, it is critical to maintain a holistic approach to total well-being. Balancing financial objectives with physical and mental health is crucial. After all, financial stress can have a significant impact on one’s overall health. A comprehensive approach that encompasses financial, physical, and mental well-being is the key to achieving a truly prosperous life. As Americans prioritize financial improvement in 2024, it symbolizes a new era where financial health is considered integral to overall well-being. This collective movement towards financial literacy and empowerment is not only a powerful resolution for the new year but a transformative journey that promises peace of mind, security, and the freedom to live a fulfilling life.

FOOD

Kosher Recipes Made Easy By Jamie Geller

• BROCCOLI KUGEL • 80 MIN DURATION • 75MIN COOK TIME

• 5MIN PREP TIME • 8 SERVINGS

DID YOU KNOW? The word “kugel” is German for “ball” and probably refers to the small round pot in which kugels used to be cooked. The pot would be placed inside the chulent pot and left there to cook until served on Shabbos. Eventually kugels were baked separately in larger pans, in the same form that we now know them. INGREDIENTS • 1 (2-pound) bag frozen chopped broccoli cuts, thawed and drained • 1 cup light mayonnaise • 4 eggs • 1½ teaspoons kosher salt • ¼ teaspoon coarse black pepper • 1 pinch cayenne pepper

PREPARATION 1. Preheat oven to 375° F. 2. Liberally coat a 9-inch round baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. 3. In a large bowl, place broccoli, mayonnaise, eggs, salt, black, and cayenne peppers, and mix well. 4. Pour broccoli mixture into prepared baking dish. 5. Bake at 375°F for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until set with golden edges.
