A Chabad Like No Other

This week we conducted a deepdive interview with Rabbi Joseph Bronstein of Congregation Judea Chabad in Hollywood to discuss what it means to apply community into religious practice and the interesting meaning behind the Shul that we know and love today. Taking place at the beginning of the week, we get a wonderful image painted for us of what is waiting for us upon attendance and or involvement, especially for Shabbat!

SFCV:

In your opinion, how has your leadership position in the community influenced the Chabad synagogue experience?

Rabbi Bronstein:

Originally the synagogue was a Liberal Conservative Temple that started in 1981. In 1989 its closing became evident. I was introduced by friends into this leadership role. I was told if I wanted to run it Orthodox that was fine but only on one condition, that it is not be Chabad. When I had asked why they said it was “cult-like”. I understood the misconception, but I personally am a “Chabadnik” and will always remain as such. We agreed

that the Shul would not have a Chabad sign and instead be transferred to “congregation” from “temple” and to make it into a community driven synagogue. After 4-5 years without affiliation to Chabad, while still doing things in the Chabad ways, having the Siddurs being the exact same, it was basically Chabad in disguise, and it was still looking all the same. Eventually, one member of the Board had finally asked “Are you Chabad?” He continued, “If I could run it like that [because] it’s wonderful and beautiful, why not make it like that?” I had been waiting for that! That is when the Chabad sign went up and we joined the long list of running Chabads while also becoming 180 in Florida and it took quite a turn! More people came, including youth, and we flourished to a greater extent than had already been. The whole area changed with more Judaic values circling within the community.

SFCV:

What is the Chabad Hollywood community like compared to a Chabad in another community? How is this Chabad unique?

Rabbi Bronstein:

This Chabad is warm, very warm and welcoming to everyone who walk through the doors. Respect and love are the commonality of everyone in this Shul and we believe we are all as one Am Yisrael. All are free to come as they choose, when they choose, without judgment. I say, how you came is your business but once you enter it is now Chabad’s business how you act inside of the Shul. I would also not consider us to be a “regular synagogue” because our core isn’t Chabad membership, it is not based off those raised in Chabad, it is for everyone regardless of backgrounds and is very colorful, we belong to the rainbow correlation I’d say. We accept Americans, Hispanics, Converts, English-speakers, non-English speakers, Ashkenazi, Sephardic, older and younger. I would love to keep it this way, it is what makes it unique and special.

SFCV:

What inspired you and your wife to take on such pivotal roles and how has it impacted you both?

Rabbi Bronstein:

I grew up in Israel, grew up involved

in Chabad. I came here as a young man (around 14 years old) while my now-wife was growing up in Brooklyn. I was a student there in Yeshiva and we eventually ended up meeting by Shidduch. After building a home together we came here in 1978 so I could run a Yeshiva at the time which lasted for about 3.5-4 years. For some reasons Chabad was going through rapid changes at that same time causing many of its institutions to combine or others to temporarily close and my Yeshiva unfortunately fell under this category. I went into business for about 29-30 years and throughout that time dealt with Temples of all kinds. One client happened to be the Rabbi and Board member of the Shul that once was Temple Judea and now is my Chabad. He is the one who introduced the opportunity to me. I expressed my interest but due to me being Orthodox they kept looking elsewhere, however they eventually came back around to me and after negotiations back and forth I run a Board-free Shul.

SFCV:

How does Chabad educate the community?

Rabbi Bronstein:

With a variety of classes, lectures, and having myself there each day as people come in and join to daven daily. We have learning and davening back-to-back, Monday night classes, Thursday night classes, Shabbat classes, Parsha review before morning davening, Mincha classes, one-on-one studying, and so much more! We also

offer a Rosh Chodesh session with my wife for women. Most importantly, we encourage everyone to join us for Shabbat and Kiddush, which is always an open-community feast.

When asked, “For families just starting their spiritual journey, what words of guidance can you offer” and “What is ‘Ask the Rabbi’ on the Chabad website and how is it best utilized?” This was his generous answers for us:

Families should come for just one hour for Shabbat. It doesn’t have to be for the full service, just to enjoy Shabbat, just to experience kiddush, to pray and meet people and be part of the atmosphere. To just taste it a bit, to see how beautiful and sweet it can be is the first step. To follow through with this once or twice, then continue at your own pace- ask how, ask with what, get involved, make a schedule or program involvement to suit them.

‘Ask Chabad’ is important, the very first step before even coming. ‘Ask the Rabbi’ is to be able to inquire, educate, and connect while at home if too uncomfortable for a Shul or in person Rabbi. It is a fabulous resource as well as a pivotal one. Chabad.org is also incredibly important for initial introduction into the lifestyle.

SFCV:

What does the community have to offer Jewish families outside of the synagogue?

Rabbi Bronstein:

We are the heart of the Jewish community! Along with vision, I knew within 5-10 years that this area would

become big. I knew Emerald Hills and Pembroke Pines would go different ways and we being in the middle would merge into a larger home for the Jewish community with much more brewing and have an Eruv on Shabbat to connect them all!

SFCV:

Is there anything you feel should be discussed more or more known about in the South Florida Jewish community?

Rabbi Bronstein:

We are very lucky and have a wonderful area to shed light and bring light to those not yet affiliated or apart of yiddishkeit to enjoy and share simcha and positive thinking in view of happenings in Israel. We must remember that the only way to expel darkness is by giving love, tzedakah, kindness, and holding open doors for one another.

Chabad of Hollywood had recently hosted an IDF comedy show with 1800 seats sold out all in the efforts to support the cause in Israel today. Rabbi Bronstein has also been known to send packages for Israeli soldiers and he and his Shul does not plan on slowing down. If you’d like to help but do not know how or do not know what is within your means, please do not be afraid to reach out for guidance!

A special thanks to Rabbi Dovi & Pessi Levy who joined us two years ago as assistant Rabbi and Rebbetzin and have been running our Sunday school.

Rising Antisemitism and Global Tensions,

YOUNG ISRAEL OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH WITNESSES REMARKABLE GROWTH

In the coastal city of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, a remarkable story of community resilience and growth is unfolding at the Young Israel of Sunny Isles Beach (YISIB). Against a backdrop of rising antisemitism and escalating Israel-Hamas war, YISIB, led by Rabbi Meir Haber, is becoming a vibrant center for Jewish life and culture.

Established to serve the spiritual and communal needs of the local Jewish population, YISIB has evolved into a sanctuary for Jews seeking not only religious guidance but also a sense of belonging in these turbulent times. Rabbi Meir Haber, the spiritual leader of the congregation, has been at the forefront of this expansion. "In an era where challenges to Jewish identity and safety are increasing, our community stands as a beacon of hope and unity," states Rabbi Haber.

Recent years have seen a worrying

rise in antisemitic incidents across the United States. This disturbing trend, coupled with ongoing tensions in the Middle East, has heightened the community's need for a strong, supportive base. YISIB has responded by diversifying its offerings, catering to a wide range of members including families, singles, retirees, and Israeli expatriates.

The synagogue’s response to the recent Israel-Hamas war exemplifies its role as a community cornerstone. Programs and events focused on educating and updating its congregation about the situation, strengthening their connection to Israel and Jewish heritage. "These discussions are crucial. They not only inform but also unite us in our support for Israel and each other," adds Rabbi Haber.

The growth of YISIB is also visible in its array of activities. From

youth education initiatives to social gatherings, the synagogue has become a hub for cultural and religious engagement. Its commitment to inclusivity and community building resonates strongly with its members.

George Kohn, President of YISIB, reflects on the synagogue's expansion: "Our growth is both a response to the challenges we face as a community and a celebration of our culture and values. It's about creating a safe, nurturing environment for all our members."

YISIB’s story is one of hope and determination, a testament to the power of community in the face of adversity. As antisemitism and global unrest present ongoing challenges, the synagogue's role as a haven of peace, education, and solidarity becomes ever more crucial.

Navigating the Dynamic South Florida Real Estate Market: Homeowners Insurance

Overview:

The allure of South Florida comes with its unique challenges, especially when it comes to homeowners insurance. It's a complex issue influenced by both natural and man-made factors. Whether you're buying, selling, or currently own a home in this vibrant area, understanding the evolving insurance market is crucial.

Understanding Homeowners Insurance in South Florida:

Unlike other regions where homeowners insurance might be more straightforward, South Florida presents a unique set of challenges. Due to its geographic location, the area is susceptible to a trifecta of threats: flooding, hurricanes (hazard), and wind damage. These factors make obtaining comprehensive coverage more complex and often more expensive than in other states.

staggering analysis highlighted by the Tampa Bay Times revealed that in 2019, Florida accounted for 8% of the nation's homeowners' claims but a disproportionate 76% of its related lawsuits. This litigation frenzy has led to significant financial strain on insurers, with many opting to exit the state's market altogether.

2. Market Consolidation: The exodus of insurers from the Florida market has led to a significant reduction in competition. A handful of companies now dominate, leading to a nearmonopolistic situation where insurers can dictate terms and qualifications. This consolidation has made it increasingly difficult for homeowners to find affordable and comprehensive coverage options.

Conclusion:

In the dynamic real estate market of South Florida, homeowners insurance

The insurance landscape in South Florida is continually evolving. Staying informed about legislative changes, market trends, and insurance products is crucial for homeowners in the region. Buy Now… Pay Later… Too Good To be True?

The concept of “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) has surged in popularity, offering consumers an alternative way to manage their finances while making purchases. This financing option allows individuals to acquire goods immediately but defer payment through a series of installments, often without interest.

While BNPL schemes like Afterpay, Klarna, and Affirm have democratized access to goods for many, they come with risks essential to understand for anyone considering this payment method. Recent statistics show that 21% of people use BNPL for groceries, and most of the BNPL usage is for purchases under $250. These statistics underscore the dire state of the American consumer that is not adequately being reflected in the marketplace.

BNPL works on a simple premise: consumers make a purchase, take the goods home immediately, and pay for them over time in predetermined, often interest-free, installments. This approach has made significant inroads in the retail sector, providing a flexible payment solution that can make expensive purchases seem more manageable. The initial appeal of BNPL plans lies in their ease of use. Approval processes are typically streamlined, requiring less stringent credit checks than traditional financing options, which makes them accessible to a broader audience, including those with limited or no credit history.

However, the benefits of BNPL go beyond just accessibility. For consumers who manage their finances carefully, BNPL can be a savvy way to spread out the cost of purchases without incurring the high interest

rates associated with credit cards. This can be particularly advantageous for managing cash flow or purchasing essential items when immediate funds are unavailable. Moreover, the absence of interest charges in many BNPL plans means that if payments are made on time, the cost of a purchase does not increase over time, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious shoppers.

Despite these advantages, BNPL is not without its risks. One of the primary concerns is the potential for overspending. The ease and convenience of BNPL can lead consumers to make impulse purchases or buy items they cannot afford, accumulating debt across multiple BNPL plans. This risk is compounded by the fact that missed payments can lead to hefty late fees, negating the financial benefits of an interest-free arrangement. Additionally, while BNPL payments are easier to manage in the short term, they can lead to financial strain if not carefully planned for, especially if unexpected expenses arise.

When considering BNPL, it’s essential to approach it with a clear understanding of one’s financial situation. This means evaluating the immediate benefits of spreading out payments and the potential for future financial stress. Consumers should assess their ability to meet all installment payments on time, considering their overall budget and potential unexpected expenses. It’s also advisable to limit the number of concurrent BNPL plans to avoid losing track of payments, which can quickly lead to a buildup of debt.

The ease of accessing a BNPL plan should not overshadow the need for responsible financial management. The risks associated with overspending and accumulating debt highlight the importance of careful consideration and planning. By understanding how BNPL works, recognizing its benefits and pitfalls, and being mindful of their financial health, consumers can make informed decisions that align with their long-term financial goals. As with any financial tool, speaking with a competent financial professional who can advise you accordingly is crucial.

How Sales Are Really Made?

Someone’s been tasting my porridge. I found that out over the weekend. There’s been a heavy attempt by my competitors to actively challenge me on one of my favorite clients.

Although weekend incoming calls on my personal number often go to voicemail, it’s usually only due to not having my phone on me as much. I do have a basic rule, however. When a client calls me and I’m not preoccupied, I answer, even on weekends. It might sound elementary, but it can go a long way. Like the call I received this past Sunday afternoon as I was driving to New Jersey.

“Hey Fred, great to hear from you. To what do I owe this honor?”

“Hey Shalom, everything is good. No complaints but glad you picked up. I’d like to have my customers pay the service fees for their transactions instead of me from now on. I’ve been feeling crushed with the rise of my business costs lately and have heard of other companies offering this option to their merchants.”

After doing the quick math, this change would be saving him ten thousand dollars in fees over the calendar year. The program is called “Cash Discount” where the cash price costs less for customers. As a side, I usually don’t recommend this and it’s not for every type of business, but I’m here to also service my clients and happy to oblige.

“Sure, happy to set that up for you,” I replied. “Let’s hop on tomorrow to go over the details.”

“Thanks Shalom. I’ll also need some additional devices for my drivers. I want them to start taking payment in person.”

“Sure, I’ll be glad to throw that in at no cost.”

“Thank you. I knew we went with the right company when we finally made that switch to you. You’ve been so responsive ever since we joined your services away from Chase. We get calls all the time, from companies like yours, offering us better rates to get us to switch over. But I’m not switching. Who else would pick up the phone on a Sunday?”

“Thank you, Fred for your kind words. I didn’t give up on you over the last two years until you finally called me. Remember?”

“Oh yes yes, Shalom.”

The story with this client starts two and a half years ago with a cold call to a storage company in Los Angeles. The back and forth between us since then are too long for this short article, such as the time I followed up to get their businesses and woke them up at 3AM during his safari vacation in South Africa.

I also remember them saying, if you can’t deliver on XYZ, we can’t move forward. And I couldn’t at that time. Well, I could have but it took too many technicalities for them to buy in. I stayed in touch. I knew they had certain requirements based on the uniqueness of how they run their business. I also knew they had certain pain points with

their processor as well as the high cost of taking American Express. I had a solution and educated them, but I hadn’t yet fully gained their trust. I was after all a cold call once upon a time. I continued to stay in their lives on some little level.

Almost two years later, as I was about to go off the grid in South Dakota for some time alone, I got a missed call. It was them. It meant only one thing. They didn’t want me. They needed me. Sure enough, they really did.

Their payment software had been compromised by scammers and Chase had frozen their payment system. They turned to the contact in the industry they were familiar with. Me. Their situation was dire. Their business funds were on hold and while in arbitration, I was their last hope to keep their business afloat.

Fast forward, I had them underwritten, approved and programed in record time, with just a few minutes to Sundown on Friday that same week.

Now, I don’t know if it was this or picking up the phone on a Sunday afternoon, but we are constantly selling ourselves even more so after the sale is made.

The lessons are many. For one, don’t underestimate your power in sales. You are needed. Maybe this just isn’t the right time for your prospect. Second, create continuous familiarity with who you are, in a pleasant way. In turn, you might be trusted at a time when your prospect might just need you the most. Three, make a habit of being easy to reach.

When everyone eventually comes knocking with lower prices, they’ll have no idea they are working against a trusted partner in the business.

FOOD

Kosher Recipes Made Easy

30MIN DURATION 20MIN COOK TIME 10MIN PREP TIME 6 SERVINGS

SALMON STEWED WITH LENTILS

INGREDIENTS

• 2 pounds fresh salmon fillet

• 8 sprigs fresh parsley

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 3 tablespoons sofrito

• 5 cups fish stock, buy or make your own

• 4 cups canned lentils, drained

• 2 tablespoons picada

• 2 pinches salt

PREPARATION

1. Remove the skin from the salmon fillet. To do this, grip the skin at the end nearest to you, then cut between the flesh and the skin, keeping the skin taut. Run your fingers along the fish. Feeling for bones. If you find any, pull them out using tweezers. Cut the flesh into 1-inch cubes. You will need 10 pieces per serving.

2. Pick the parsley leaves fro the stems. Chop it finely. Place a saucepan over medium heat, then pour in the oil and add the sofrito. Cook for 1 minute. Pour in the stock, bring to a boil, and add the lentils. Add the picada and simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Season the salmon with salt and add to the pan. After 1 minute, turn the salmon in the pan, being careful not to break it up, then season to taste with more salt if needed. Sprinkle the chopped parsley into the pan and carefully stir in. Serve the stew in shallow bowls.

NOTES

• Ask your fish supplier to clean, gut, and skin the fish if you prefer

• This dish is also good with other types of oily fish, such as mackerel.
