We Need the Bracha and Shemira of Shabbos!

Uplifting Maamad of Kavod HaTorah at Prudential Center as Klal Yisrael Set to Undertake the Learning of Hilchos Shabbos

Klal Yisrael needs shemirah… desperately! The last few weeks have sadly and tragically been the embodiment of the words that we recently read in the Haggadah, “Ela she’bichol dor v’dor omdim aleinu l’chaloseinu - in every generation they seek to stand up against us and destroy us.”

What we have seen transpiring in university campuses where calls for “Kill the Jews” have become de rigueur have made even Jews who were once complacent in the “melting pot” of America fearful for their future in this country, actually in any country in the world.

Jews the world over are surrounded by enemies who seek nothing less than our destruction. Even our “friends”

have proven untrustworthy at best.

We Need the Koach of Torah and the Koach of Shabbos

There is no question that the ultimate response to this must be a spiritual response. Hashem is talking to US! The leading Gedolei Yisrael of our time are telling us that we need the koach of Torah and the koach of Shabbos. The zechus of Torah saves the world, and the zechus of shmiras Shabbos and limud about Shabbos, is the ultimate shemirah.

That is why Dirshu is investing a colossal effort into trying to unite all of Klal Yisrael through limud Hilchos Shabbos. This initiative can save us from the forces that seek to destroy us, by encouraging Jews in all

four corners of the world to start learning hilchos Shabbos. The fact that the Dirshu Daf HaYomi B’Halacha will begin learning hilchos Shabbos this coming 3 Sivan/ June 9 is the most opportune time to join and see how learning hilchos Shabbos can not only transform your life and your Shabbos, but it can also transform the world and protect Klal Yisrael from harm. That is the koach of hilchos Shabbos.

It is for this purpose that Dirshu, with the bracha and encouragement of Gedolei Yisrael from both Eretz Yisrael and chutz l’aretz, will be holding a massive gathering entitled “Kinnus Olam HaTorah, Kabbolas Shabbos Event” to mark the haschala of hilchos Shabbos in the Daf HaYomi

B’Halacha program. The event will be held on Sunday, 3 Sivan/ June 9, at the Prudential Center Arena in Newark, NJ. Leading Gedolei Yisrael will address the maamad of chizuk and tefillah and most importantly, encourage the undertaking of a kabbalah to learn and upgrade our hilchos Shabbos.

The Kinnus Olam HaTorah at the Prudential Center: A Deeply Inspiring Program Graced by Leading Gedolei Yisrael

The Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program is an excellent vehicle to accomplish this goal. It involves a relatively small daily investment of time to learn an amud of Mishnah Berurah along with Dirshu’s Biurim and Musafim on the adjacent page that elucidates the piskei halacha of many Gedolei Haposkim on modern day questions and scenarios as paskend by the Poskei Hador since the publishing of the Mishnah Berurah. Simultaneously, lomdei Dirshu are now in the middle of learning Masechta Shabbos in Talmud Bavli, availing themselves of the ideal opportunity to learn the foundational underpinnings of the halacha from the Gemara and then follow up with the practical halacha.

The massive Kinnus Olam HaTorah at the Prudential Center will feature a deeply inspiring program graced by leading Gedolei Yisrael and

promises to be a tremendously uplifting maamad of Torah, tefillah and kavod haTorah.

Daf HaYomi B’Halacha: A Program For Our Time Established by the Gedolei Hador

Dirshu’s Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program was established at the behest of the Gedolei Hador, Hagaon Harav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, zt”l, and Hagaon Harav Shmuel Wosner, zt”l. These Torah giants encouraged Rav Dovid Hofstedter, Nasi of Dirshu, to launch a Dirshu program that would facilitate daily learning of Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim featuring the common halachos that people encounter each day.

Daf HaYomi B’Halacha is a daily, multiple-track learning program of halachah and mussar. The first track focuses on an amud of Mishnah

Berurah together with Dirshu’s Biurim U’Musafim found on the corresponding page in the Dirshu Mishnah Berurah. The most advanced track consists of learning approximately an amud of Mishnah Berurah with Biur Halachah and Shaar Hatzion as well as Dirshu’s Biurim U’Musafim.

What is the Biurim U’Musafim section in the Dirshu Mishnah Berurah?

Firstly the “Musafim” component adds the Mishnah Berurah’s own additional words and rulings culled from other areas on the subject at hand. For example, if the Mishnha Berurah, when expounding on the laws of bishul - cooking on Shabbos, discusses one topic at length and in a different section discusses the same topic in a shorter, less elaborate way, the Dirshu edition includes

the Mishnah Berurah’s words from the other location on the opposite pages to where the halachos are discussed. This frequently sheds light on the halachic ruling and enables the learner to see how the Chofetz Chaim himself ruled on the same matter in a different place.

The second component is that of the Biurim. Often, in the main body of the Mishnah Berurah the Chofetz Chaim only writes the actual psak halachah - halachic ruling, without giving the reasons for that ruling. It is not uncommon, however, for the Chofetz Chaim to elaborate on the reasons in his commentaries, Shaar Hatzion and Biur Halachah. Additionally, these commentaries present halachic rulings not contained in the Mishnah Berurah which shed insight on the topic at hand. In a wonderfully cogent, concise manner, the Biurim part of the Dirshu Mishnah Berurah cites these rulings, thereby affording the learner a quick, comprehensive listing of related halachic rulings and explanations as ruled by the Chofetz Chaim himself in his other sefarim.

Perhaps the most exciting component of the new Dirshu Mishnah Berurah is the “Likutei Teshuvos” part of the Biurim U’Musafim section. The Chofetz Chaim completed the Mishnah Berurah in 1907. Over the past century plus, umpteen technological advances and

countless questions relevant to today’s lifestyles have arisen. This is especially true regarding the halachos of Shabbos, where the constantly evolving technology has engendered thousands of new halachic questions and rulings. Of course, all these rulings are rooted in the original words of the Shulchan Aruch and poskim. The Dirshu edition of the Mishnah Berurah brings literally thousands of rulings from the Gedolei Haposkim of the last generation as well as from contemporary poskim, each in its proper place in the Mishnah Berurah. The learner is therefore not only able to learn the words of the Mishnah Berurah but to know and understand the rulings of the great poskim on thousands of modern, practical questions while simultaneously understanding how these modern-day rulings have their source in the original words of the Shulchan Aruch and Mishnah Berurah!

Learning Mishnah Berurah is Mamesh a Spiritual Hatzalos Nefashos!

Seven years ago, HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein spoke at a Daf HaYomi B’Halacha event devoted to Chelek Gimmel, hilchos Shabbos. He said, “The Mishnah Berurah contains within it many practical halachos that are incumbent on every Jew to keep. [If one does not learn these halachos] it is very easy to inadvertently

transgress. This is particularly true with regard to hilchos Shabbos. A person who does not learn these halachos can easily transgress Torah-mandated prohibitions. That is why it is so important to learn Mishnah Berurah every day. Learning Mishnah Berurah is mamesh spiritual hatzalos nefashos!”

Indeed, HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Zilberstein, shlita, recently said, “We all know that shemiras Shabbos serves as the ultimate shemirah, the ultimate protection from our enemies. How much more so is learning Torah and learning about Shabbos a protection in these times when Klal Yisrael needs so much shemirah. Thus, it is important to tap into that shemirah to invoke rachmei shomayim on behalf of Klal Yisrael and enhance our limud haTorah, especially in areas of Shabbos, which is the mekor habracha, the source of all blessing.”

Now is the time to undertake to accept upon ourselves, with a true kabbalah,to learn hilchos Shabbos, and to enhance and upgrade our shemiras Shabbos. The only way to do that is by learning hilchos Shabbos.

This 3 Sivan/June 9 let us all join Klal Yisrael led by Gedolei Yisrael at the Prudential Center and begin learning hilchos Shabbos. There is nothing better that you can do for Klal Yisrael! There is nothing better that you can do for yourself!

10 QUESTIONS for JUDGE ROY K. ALTMAN

Appointed by President Donald Trump, Roy Kalman Altman is a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Recently, Judge Altman was part of a delegation of 14 US federal judges arriving in Israel for a week-long educational tour on the impact of the October 7 Hamas massacre and its challenges to the Israeli legal system and the laws of war.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. BEFORE WE GET INTO MORE DETAILS, CAN YOU GIVE ME AN OVERVIEW OF THE PURPOSE OF THE MISSION?

We went on this Judicial Education Mission to study comparative constitutional law problems, to understand the legal processes the Israeli Government has put in place to comply with international law, to learn more about the legal case between Israel and South Africa that’s pending before the International Court of Justice, to understand how the Israeli legal system has been shaped by the events of October 7th, and to get a sense of the facts as they are happening on the ground in Israel today.

WHY WAS THIS MISSION INVALUABLE FOR BOTH YOU AND FELLOW LEGAL PROFESSIONALS?

We learned so much about the many steps Israel takes to ensure that its military operations comply with

international law. We met, for instance, with the MAG—the Military Advocate General, Israel’s version of our JAG. The meeting was remarkable in several respects, two of which I’ll highlight here. The first is that, unlike in America, where military commanders get advice from JAG officers and are then free to disregard that advice, in Israel, a MAG lawyer is deployed with every commander—and the MAG lawyer’s advice is not aspirational. It’s an order that must be followed. What that means in practice is that

almost every strike in Gaza has been approved by a lawyer (and often several lawyers) in advance—something no other army in the world does (or has ever done before). The second revelation was a series of videos of canceled strikes. Over and over again, the MAG showed us drone or bomber videos, in which the drone operator or pilot would be over the Hamas target—and you’d see the target right there on the screen. The pilot would say he was ready to strike, but then the lawyer (or the commander with the lawyer’s guidance)

would come over the airway and say: “There’s a kid playing soccer 20 meters away,” or “there are civilians nearby,” so the “strike is canceled,” and the pilot would respond: “Kibalti.” Received. And the strike would be canceled. We learned that this kind of extreme caution happens every day in Gaza— lawful strikes on unambiguous military targets are canceled because of a concern for civilian life.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT ISRAEL’S LEGAL SYSTEM?

The Supreme Court of Israel operates in three different ways: as a supreme court for cases that begin in the trial courts and are appealed to the midlevel appellate courts; as an appellate court of first review for cases that are directly filed in the midlevel courts; and as the high court for cases that are filed in its original jurisdiction. The most commonly sued defendant last year in cases filed directly before the high court was General Yehuda Fuchs, the general in charge of the Central Command, which includes the area of Judea and Samaria. And why does he get sued so often? Because Israel has relaxed its standing rules to allow international non-profit organizations to sue General Fuchs directly in the high court on behalf of Palestinian civilians who claim to have been injured by one of the general’s decisions. This is a remarkable fact that’s

little known here in America. In our system, a plaintiff can only sue a defendant if he has standing—which means that he was injured by the defendant’s conduct. Israel, by contrast, has relaxed the standing obligation to make it easier, not harder, for nonprofit groups (who may not have been injured by General Fuchs’s decisions but who may have the means to bring the lawsuit) to represent the interests of unaffiliated, but allegedly aggrieved, Palestinians.

HOW DOES THIS MISSION FOSTER A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION BETWEEN ISRAEL AND THE US?

Israel is the only vibrant, western, liberal democracy in the region. It traces its common-law system to the English system that, in many ways, governs us here in America today. We therefore have much to learn from each other, not just about constitutional first principles, but also about the various

ways in which a justice system predicated on individual rights can address and dismantle the terror networks bent on destroying it.

WHAT DID YOU AND OTHER PARTICIPANTS LEARN ABOUT INTERNATIONAL LAW?

Israel’s military response in Gaza may well be the most humane military action in the history of modern warfare. On the one hand, Israel’s military offensive has been one of the most effective in history: Israel has killed almost 14,000 Hamas and Palestinian Jihad fighters, including 2 of Hamas’s top 4 leaders and 19 of its 24 battalion commanders; dismantled 18 of the 24 Hamas battalions; and captured or wounded at least 10,000 terrorists. In fact, Israel’s kill rate (of about 52 enemy fighters killed to every Israeli soldier) is the highest in modern history. Now, you’d think that, to accomplish such astounding military achievements, Israel would have had to bomb Gaza indiscriminately, killing hundreds of thousands of

civilians along with those 14,000 terrorists. But, as Major John Spencer of the Urban Warfare Institute has shown, the opposite is true: Even using Hamas’s own figures—and I want to stress that the numbers of civilian casualties in Gaza come from Hamas, a terror organization that has always lied about civilian casualties and that has continued to lie about civilian casualties during this war (its now-debunked claim that Israel killed 500 civilians at the al-Ahli hospital in October being just the most prominent example of this)— Israel’s war in Gaza has been the most humane war that has ever been fought in modern times. And we don’t have to go all the way back to WW2, where millions of German and Japanese citizens were killed, and we don’t have to focus on Russia’s wars in Syria and Afghanistan—where hundreds of thousands of Muslims were killed—or even the wars in Sudan, Vietnam, Korea, Congo, and Cambodia, where millions more civilians were killed, all without any significant protests on US campuses. No, as Major Spencer has shown, the average militant-tocivilian death ratio in modern wars fought by western armies is about 1 in 9—that’s one enemy combatant for every 9 civilians. In our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we (the US and our allies) set the gold standard for humaneness in war, killing 1 enemy combatant

for every 4.5 or 5 civilians. And that’s the best the world has ever done—until now. In Gaza, Israel has cut the US’s previously unprecedented militant-to-civilian kill rate by more than 75%, to 1 to 1 or (at worst) 1 to 1.5. And it has done this while facing an enemy that has purposefully embedded itself in the civilian population in a cynical attempt to have Israel kill more, not less, of its civilians. And we saw videos of that too. As Major Spencer has said, Israel is setting a standard for both effectiveness and humaneness in war that no other army has ever met and which no other army may ever be able to meet again. The claims that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza—or that its defensive war against Hamas otherwise violates international law—is thus frivolous and should be condemned.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU LEARNT ABOUT OCTOBER 7TH THAT YOU DID NOT KNOW BEFORE THE TRIP?

I didn’t realize the extent of

the horrors. We watched the 47-minute video the Israeli government has compiled of the massacre. Most of it comes from Hamas’s own cellphone and GoPro footage. I was astounded by the degree of the savagery—the beheadings, the rapes, the torture of women and children—all performed with a kind of boyish jubilation that’s almost hard to fathom. I was also struck by the fact that, when the Jewish victims’ bodies were dragged back to Gaza, thousands of Palestinian “civilians” lined the streets and began jumping over each other—sometimes fighting and pushing each other—just to get the chance to attack, spit on, and desecrate the bodies of the victims. Finally, I didn’t realize before our trip that there were three waves of attacks on October 7th. The first two involved about 3,000 Hamas and Palestinian Jihad terrorists who murders, raped, and burned almost everyone (and everything) they found. But the third wave was made up of about 1,000 civilians who came in after the terrorists and,

in the presence of desecrated bodies and burned-out houses, looted the personal belongings of the victims: cars, radios, televisions, even women’s underwear. This wasn’t about Palestinian liberation. This was a pogrom—just like the ones we Jews have been facing for generations.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SEE THE ACTUAL IMPACT ON ISRAELIS/TO BEAR WITNESS TO THESE ATROCITIES?

If we’re going to understand what happened—and if we’re going to talk about it publicly— then we need to understand the basic facts. And there’s no better way to understand the facts than to go and see it for yourself.

YOU VISITED THE NOVA FESTIVAL SITE. CAN YOU SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE VISIT AS WELL AS ANY OTHER IMPACTFUL MOMENTS?

The first thing we saw when we walked up was a mother, lying over the spot where her son had been murdered, wailing at the top of her lungs—a loud, piercing wail that sent shockwaves through all of us. As I was watching this mother grieve for her dead son, I suddenly thought I heard music. So, I started walking towards the sound of the music, which grew louder and louder. Suddenly, I was in a clearing with about 100 women, standing in a giant circle, holding each other arm

in arm and singing Hatikvah (the Israeli national anthem). The word Hatikvah means The Hope. One of the women asked me to join them, and I did. Soon, all the other judges had joined. Can there be a more powerful example of the resilience and strength of the Jewish soul—that, in this place where 239 young and innocent Jews were brutally murdered, hundreds of Jews would come and sing the song of hope?

CAN YOU SHARE THE IMPACT THE MISSION HAD ON YOU AT A PERSONAL LEVEL?

It was the most moving, transformational trip I’ve ever been on—and I think the other judges all felt the same.

The strength and resiliency of the Jewish people—their love for one another and their country—were inspiring to all of us.

CAN YOU SHARE ON HOW YOU HAVE BEEN PROACTIVE IS SUPPORTING ISRAEL SINCE OCTOBER 7TH?

I’ve traveled around the country giving speeches, laying out the historical and legal justification for the Jewish State of Israel, and I’ve written several opinion pieces, in which I’ve responded to claims that Israel is illegitimate or that its response to the horrific attacks of October 7th have been anything but proportional under the laws of war.

BEFORE WE END, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TAKEAWAY FROM THIS MISSION?

Israel, like America, is a shining beacon of what the world should hope to be: a vibrant, free, and democratic country whose citizens love one another and hope to live in peace with their neighbors, even as those neighbors strive constantly to wipe the one Jewish State off the map.

WOW. THIS MISSION MUST HAVE BEEN AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE ON BOTH THE PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL LEVEL. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE AND CONTINUE TO DO.

Operation Inspiration: One for the Road

While driving on a busy street in an unfamiliar part of town, I saw a car parked in front of a house. Its front end was a bit into the road with the front wheels turned sharply towards the street. As I passed, it struck me that the driver may have been trying to park, or he may have been trying to leave the spot. He didn’t have his blinker on, so I didn’t know which one it was. Had he signaled, I would have been happy to pause and let him enter traffic. But he didn’t.

give you the strength to continue. However, if, like my driver, it’s unclear what you really want to do, Hashem may sit back and wait, or just pass you by.

Instead, he stayed where he was, possibly waiting for traffic to let up so he could get on his way, or maybe hoping there would be a break in the line of cars so he might straighten out and back into the parking spot. Why wouldn’t he have signaled by turning on his blinker so I could help him?

I realized that sometimes, people don’t like to let others know their intentions. Instead, they wait for the opportune moment to make their moves unimpeded. Since no one knows what they are up to, no one can try to stop them. But there’s a flaw in their calculations.

True, not broadcasting your intentions keeps people from getting in your way on purpose, but it also prevents them from helping you. As I said, had the driver signaled, I would have tried to help. I would have waited to let him in, or stayed back so he could make his maneuvers to straighten out. Because he didn’t, he possibly lost out.

I realized, also, that I’m not alone in my desire to help people reach their goals. No less than the Ribono Shel Olam, Himself, shares this desire. As the ultimate giver, Hashem wants to help us achieve – but we have to signal our intentions.

Chazal tell us, “In the way a person wishes to go, so is he led.” If you desire to be good, Hashem will help you to do it. If you start a project, He’ll

You can try to do things on your own, to no avail. Just as the driver at the curb was at the mercy of the traffic flow, unable to safely do anything until the cars stopped passing, so are we not really in control of our destinies. If we think we can do things or avoid them, we’re missing the big picture. We’re forgetting about the fact that we are only part of the equation. Whatever efforts we make, are only as successful are Hashem lets them be. With so many factors able to stand in our way, our only hope is to ask for help.

We need to make our best efforts, but at the same time, ask Hashem to guide us in the right way. If we do this, then, like the helpful fellow driver I hoped to be, Hashem will give us the room to complete our desired maneuver.

It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of wisdom. So often, we like to feel in control of a situation or the things we want to do. If we rely on our

P.34 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM
COMMUNITY NEWS

wits alone, though, we may be waiting a long time for an opportunity that never arises. That’s what is written in Chovos HaLevavos, “If you rely on your intellect, wealth or strength, Hashem will step back and let you explore those avenues.” But when they don’t work out, and you realize how you can’t rely on anything but Hashem, He will be there waiting for you to signal that you want His help.

There’s an added bonus as well. When you give clear signals of where you want to go, not only do those around you have the opportunity to assist in your journey, but

you, yourself, have a better idea of what has to happen. By identifying where we want to go and starting to head that way, our plans gain more concrete footings. When you open yourself up to Hashem’s help and direction, He assists you. It’s sort of like when a car dies and you want to get it out of the roadway, or when it’s stuck in the snow. If you want someone to push the car, there has to be someone in the driver’s seat directing the wheels so it goes where it needs to. Otherwise, it’s wasted effort and nobody will bother.

When you articulate your desires, you get to hear them

like an outsider and identify whether they make sense. Deep down, you know you want to be going the way Hashem wants you to go, since He’s the one pushing, so you turn the wheel the way He instructs you to, and then you get out of the rut and back on your way.

We get lots of lessons on our journey of life, and this, my friends, is just one more for the road.

REAL ESTATE

The real estate market in Southeast Florida is experiencing substantial growth, driven by robust job creation, a steady flow of new residents, and the ongoing challenges of housing affordability. This growth is most notable in the regions of Miami-Dade, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach, where multifamily construction activity is particularly vigorous

Multifamily Construction Boom

In the first quarter of 2024, Miami-Dade County reported approximately 24,000 new multifamily units under construction, accounting for 1 9% of its total multifamily inventor y This is the highest rate of new construction in comparison to 90 major markets across the countr y Similarly, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach are expanding their inventories, each with an additional 10% of units currently being built This construction is aimed at meeting the increasing demand for rental housing in the area

Recent Rent Trends

Recent data show changes in the rental landscape:

Miami-Dade and Broward Counties saw modest rent increases of 1.8% and 1.9%, respectively. Palm Beach and Martin Counties experienced more significant jumps, with rents rising by 4.3% and 4.8%. Conversely, St. Lucie County saw a decrease of 2.5% in asking rents.

These trends suggest a stabilizing rental market that may be reaching an equilibrium after periods of volatility.

Popularity of Single-Family Rentals

The demand for single-family rentals remains strong, accounting for 37% of all rental agreements in early 2024 This segment has nearly doubled since Januar y 201 9. St. Lucie, Palm Beach, and Martin Counties have the highest proportions of single-family rentals, indicating a strong a

continue to bolster the population. Notably, driver license exchange data indicate a high number of new residents from abroad, despite a slight decline from the previous year

Conclusion

Southeast Florida’s real estate market is marked by active construction, low vacancies, and rising rents, fueled by economic prosperity and demographic shifts These factors make it an area of interest for investors and residents alike, suggesting continued growth and dynamism in the housing market. This region remains a key area to watch for future real estate developments

What is Freedom?

A young boy enters a barber shop, and the barber whispers to his customer: “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.”

The barber puts a silver dollar coin in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks: “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the two quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you? That kid never learns!” said the barber.

diligent financial literacy, an unwavering optimistic mindset, and an industrious ambition to create diversified income streams.

channels is a must in safeguarding against financial volatility and expanding opportunities for wealth accumulation. Relying solely on a single source of income leaves individuals vulnerable to economic downturns or unexpected life events. By diversifying through investments, side hustles, or entrepreneurial endeavors, individuals can create multiple streams of income that provide stability and flexibility.

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy leaving the ice cream store after a lengthy conversation with the store proprietor. “Hey, kid, can I ask you a question? You seem like a bright young man; why did you take the quarters instead of the silver dollar?”

The boy licked his cone and replied: “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”

This anecdote serves as an entertaining reminder that a part of feeling free extends beyond financial wealth; it encompasses wise financial decision-making plus an overall positive mindset. After just completing the holiday of Pesach the principles of freedom is top of mind for everyone.

At its core, freedom is the ability to live life on one’s own terms, free from constraints and limitations. While money is pivotal in achieving this freedom, it is not the sole determinant. Instead, the path to genuine autonomy combines

I know this is not the first time you have heard it from me, but it’s worth repeating. Financial literacy is the cornerstone of economic freedom. Understanding the principles of budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their money. Without this knowledge, even substantial wealth can quickly dissipate, leaving individuals vulnerable to fiscal instability.

However, possessing financial literacy alone is not enough. One must also cultivate a mindset conducive to long-term success. This involves adopting habits such as delayed gratification, disciplined spending, and resilience in the face of setbacks. The young boy’s decision to forego immediate gratification in order to receive a greater reward embodies this mindset—one that prioritizes future opportunities over snatching a ‘quick’ buck.

Likewise, diversifying income

Freedom is not merely the accumulation of wealth but the culmination of intentional choices, mindset shifts, and strategic planning. It is the ability to pursue passions, seize opportunities, and weather life’s uncertainties without undue financial burden. As the young boy in the barber shop demonstrated, true freedom lies in the wisdom to prioritize long-term gains over short-term rewards.

I Hate Asking For Referrals

Got the following text this week: “There’s going to be a client of mine that will call you regarding setting up credit card processing.”

I’m always in for a good chat with a new potential client. But what made this extra sweet was that it came from a current client of mine. It’s easy to talk a good talk for some. It’s a bit more challenging to put on a good act. Yet tougher, is consistency in that act. That last one often results in a happy client.

When starting off in sales, the goal should be to get to a magic number of clients where your outreach and outbound can now take a back seat. Taking the place should be in reach and inbound. In reach means you’re approaching your current customers for your new clients. Inbound happens more on its own, and takes place once consistent. Interested parties on their own will become your client base.

When I started in sales, I was far from comprehending this. It was challenging enough to ask a stranger for business. How was I ever going to ask a current client for their own connections’ business? I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. Plus, I likely didn’t believe in my product. I

was instead solely focused on me. When the worry is all about us, it’s almost impossible to think about helping someone. When we appreciate our value combined with appreciation of the product in question, the sales interaction with the other isn’t so much sales as it is adding value. The sale is just what happens at the end.

I’m still hesitant to ask my clients for referrals though. Although they come in weekly, I believe that they can be coming in daily. What does a sales guy like me do when he needs to take the next step and just can’t? He books a meeting with another sales professional. So, I did and we have a meeting next week together.

In the meanwhile, I tried something out and it started to gain traction. When a referral comes in, whether it be from a friend or client, I ask them if

they’d like to be a partner on the account. It sounds crazy. I’m literally giving away money every single month when this new client processes their businesses credit card transactions through me. However, the reason I offer this is simple. I want my relationships to actively think about me instead of passively. It was that active thinking that had brought me the referral and I want some more of that. Thus, every referral that comes my way from this new referral partner, will also be a joint venture.

So, I have a little secret to divulge. That original message I received this week from my client was because they had just become a referral partner of mine. I had made them a partner prior to them getting in touch. The result was that they were now actively thinking of me. Not just passively. Although I truly believe in the combined value of my product and me, dangling a carrot works, and has always worked from the beginning of time. It’s well worthwhile.

Kosher Recipes Made Easy

BEEF AND MUSHROOM EGG ROLLS

INGREDIENTS

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 1/2 pound ground beef

• 1 onion, chopped

• 2 chopped baby bella mushrooms

• 1 cup shredded green cabbage

• 4 teaspoon soy sauce, plus more for serving

• 2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce

• 1 teaspoon sesame oil

• 1 egg roll wrappers, defrosted

• 1 egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water

• Canola oil for frying

PREPARATION

1. Heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium high and add ground beef. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until nicely browned. Add onions and cook 4 minutes more. Add mushrooms and cabbage and cook for 5 minutes or until wilted. Remove from heat and stir in soy sauce, pepper, chili garlic sauce and sesame oil. Set aside until cool enough to work with.

2. Lay one egg roll wrap in front of you with a tip pointing down. Spoon about 3 tablespoon of filling into the middle of the wrap. Lightly brush each corner with egg wash. Fold bottom corner up and over the filling, tuck each side in and continue to roll up, sealing tightly. Place on a baking sheet, seam side down.

3. Fill a large skillet a 1/4 inch deep with oil and heat over medium to medium-low heat. Fry egg rolls about 5 minutes until crispy and golden brown on all sides, using tongs to turn them so they brown evenly.

4. Serve with extra soy sauce for dipping.
