FLORIDA SUPPORTS ISRAEL

Historic Bicameral Proclamation and HR-125 in Support of the State of Israel Dear Members of the Local Community, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inform you about a momentous event that took place last week in the Florida State Capitol, which carries great significance for our community and our unwavering support for the State of Israel, which was co-sponsored by our State Representative Peggy GossettSeidman (District 91). In my capacity as State Representative Peggy GossettSeidman’s elective politicalcorrespondence aide, I am delighted to share the news of the signing of a historic joint-legislation proclamation and HR-125, expressing “Support for the State of Israel and condemning the Hamas terror attack.” On Wednesday afternoon, our State Representatives, Senators, and elected officials from all parties came P 1 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

together in a display of unity and solidarity in the Capitol’s Rotunda. State Representative Peggy GossettSeidman stood proudly alongside House Speaker Paul Renner and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo as they publicly unveiled and signed the bicameral proclamation. This proclamation serves as a powerful testament to our collective support for the State of Israel and a resounding condemnation of the heinous terrorist attacks carried out by HAMAS. The Floridian Legislature takes immense pride in standing with the State of Israel and its people, as well as with our local Jewish community. It is worth noting that Rep. GossettSeidman is the co-prime sponsor of House Resolution 125, HR-125, which reflects our shared efforts and unwavering support for the State of Israel. We understand that you may

have questions or require further information about the attached materials, HR-125, or would like to speak with Rep. Gossett-Seidman regarding the events surrounding yesterday’s signing and Florida’s significant show of support for Israel. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us, and we will be more than happy to arrange a conversation at your convenience. Thank you for your unwavering support and for being an essential part of the fabric of our community. We greatly appreciate your dedication to keeping our communities connected. With warm regards, State Representative Peggy Gossett-Seidman Florida House of Representatives (District 91)

Governor Ron DeSantis Addresses 1000+ of Florida’s Jewish Community, Condemns Rising Antisemitism, Promising Continued Support and Partnership Annual Teach Florida Legislative Breakfast Focused on Increased Security Needs for Jewish Community, Education, and Historic Universal School Choice Scholarship Program that Passed in the State Earlier this Year Over 1000 members of Florida’s Jewish community gathered on Sunday morning in Davie, Florida for the annual Teach Florida Legislative Breakfast. They were addressed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, and Speaker of the House Paul Renner, about the crisis in Israel, security resources for the local Jewish day schools, as well as a focus on the universal school choice scholarship program passed earlier this year. Rep. Randy Fine spoke to the VIP donor reception about his unwavering support to the Jewish community. Teach Coalition, a project of the Orthodox Union, is a nonpartisan, multi-state, grassroots movement devoted to advocating for equitable funding for nonpublic schools. Teach Florida is a division of Teach Coalition. In light of the recent devastation in Israel, there was a heavy focus on

security, and the rising needs of the Jewish community amidst a spike in antisemitism. Immediately following Oct. 7th, the Governor and local officials, in coordination with Teach Florida, provided additional support and resources for schools, synagogues and other at-risk targets in the state. Melissa Glaser, Executive Director, Teach Florida addressed the crowd saying, “The Governor of Florida, has not only been a beacon of support for our Jewish community but has also demonstrated unwavering commitment to our safety, education, and the fight against anti-Semitism.” In regards to the threats currently facing the Jewish community, Maury Litwack, Founder, Teach Coalition stated, “I’m wearing my yarmukle today, I’ll be wearing it on my flight later. My kids are going to Jewish day school tomorrow, and the next day,

and the day after that. You’re not going to scare me with a ‘Day of Hate,’ you’re not going to scare our community – we’ve been together too long.” Gov. DeSantis, who earlier this month, chartered planes bringing home from Israel nearly 700 US citizens, stated, “No one else was willing to step up and lead and so we did it, were proud to be leading on all of these important issues.” Gov. DeSantis and others also spoke about the historic HB1 bill signed in March of this year, providing approx. $8,000 per child in tuition to be used at the school of their choice, including yeshivas and Jewish day schools. “One of the most remarkable achievements of Teach Florida’s advocacy has been the passing of universal school choice through HB1,” said Glaser. “The Governor and CONTINUED ON PG 20

Israeli Soldier Held Hostage by Hamas Freed during Ground Operation By Sarah Fortinsky An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier who was kidnapped by Hamas on Oct. 7 was freed overnight during ground operations, the IDF said Monday. The IDF released a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, saying Pvt. Uri Megidish was now home with her family. “She is home. PVT Megidish was abducted by Hamas on October 7. Tonight, she was released during ground operations. Ori is now home with her family,” the statement read, along with a photo. The IDF and the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service, said Megidish had undergone a medical check and was in “good” condition. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrated her return in a statement on X. “Welcome home, Uri. I congratulate the Shin Bet and the IDF for this important and exciting achievement, an achievement that expresses our P 2 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

commitment to the release of all the abductees,” he said. “The entire nation of Israel salutes the Shin Bet and salutes the IDF. And to the terrorists of Hamas and ISIS I say – you are monsters. We will continue to pursue you, we will continue to hunt you down. We will cripple you until you fall at our feet,” he added. Israeli leaders similarly pledged to continue to free the remaining hostages, as more than 220 are estimated to remain in Hamas’s custody. Hamas has voluntarily released four civilian hostages. It was not immediately clear how Israeli forces freed Megidish. The hostages were taken on Oct. 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel’s southern border, killing more than 1,400 Israelis in what became the deadliest day in the country’s history. Also on Monday, Hamas released a video of three Israeli hostages in

their custody pleading for help and deriding Netanyahu. Netanyahu’s office described the video as “cruel psychological propaganda” and said, “We are doing everything to bring all the kidnapped and missing people home.” On Monday, another report surfaced that German Israeli influencer Shani Louk, who was taken hostage at a music festival on Oct. 7, had died. “I spoke to Shani Louk’s mother, who, after weeks of uncertainty, was notified about her daughter’s death at the hands of Hamas terrorists,” German Ambassador to Israel Steffen Seibert said Monday in a statement on X. “I can only begin to imagine the family’s pain. All of us at the Embassy had been hoping for Shani, now we mourn with all those who loved her,” he added.

BUSINESS

“Floor 61” By Shalom Markman

I got stung. It was harsh. I almost threw in the towel and quit. I hadn’t even been in sales for two months. Maybe being in sales for such a short time had me extra frustrated that day. All I wanted was to simply keep my honor. But that wasn’t to be the case. I had gotten nineteen nos in the span of four hours. With one more door to knock for number twenty that day, I lost my motivation. A nudging feeling of selfdoubt ensued. I turned around for my car. I was calling it quits. Extra frustrating was that this wasn’t how I saw myself. I knew that I was much more than a guy just going door to door. My environment, though, wouldn’t help me feel otherwise. I just wanted to call it a day and restart with a new endeavor. Doing what? I wasn’t sure. I couldn’t think. This wasn’t the time to job search. It was a time to appreciate that I gave myself a fighting chance. I had done something as unnatural as selling a red nose to a group of clowns, I felt. As I celebrated my accomplishments, my mood started changing. My confidence seemed to secretly be making an appearance. I was allowing it. Door number twenty was pulled opened. It was a warehouse. Not much use for what I was selling. Instead, I asked around for the boss’s name. Mission accomplished. I was brought to the elevator. Up I went. It opened to the receptionist. No time to think of a line. I had renewed confidence though. My persona went back to my old. I forgot that I had just thrown in the P 3 0 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

towel. Instead, I boldly mentioned that I was here to see Jake. It worked. I was shown his office and walked with my head held high. I hadn’t normally walked into businesses with confidence like this, but knowing the name of your prospect will often work wonders. Before I even said a word, I could tell that Jake was impressed with me. I’m not sure with what, but I decided to ride the wave. He motioned for me to sit. I found myself being interviewed. Usually, I did the interviewing. I must have given all the right answers. Jake picked up the phone and dialed. I later learned that it was his good freind. They were talking about a meeting in Manhattan. I was to be there the next Tuesday at 11:00 AM. But what about my credit processing I had wanted to sell him? Being in sales for those few months, I quickly learned to see the bigger picture in my interactions with others. Or maybe I was learning it today? As Jake bluntly explained, he didn’t

care what I was selling. He wouldn’t be buying from me. He doesn’t deal with someone who walks off the street. “OK fair enough”, I thought. Next Tuesday, like a soldier taking a command, I was in a midtown manhattan office on the sixty first floor. Michael was there waiting for me as I walked in. I followed him to a beautiful view of the Empire State Building out his office window. He acted as if he knew me. I acted in kind. He knew what someone like me could do for his business. He wanted me. Not to be selling, but to be engaging with the clients he worked with. He seemed to know I was that perfect fit. It took someone else recognizing my potential. It was a world class lesson in sales. Selling isn’t about the sale, but about the people. These heavy hitters understood that. I didn’t, yet. I was slowly learning to appreciate my worth. I was sitting on un-actualized value. I also learned that by selling, I’m by default putting myself in continued opportunity. The outcome can be endless. I didn’t take the job that day. I understood that I would have been selling myself short. Jake and Michael knew my potential. It was time that I got to know mine. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. He currently lives in Norfolk VA with his family and visits Florida when he gets hungry or brings on a new client. REAL ESTATE

Penny-Wise and Pound-Foolish By Shmuel Shayowitz

Morris and Estelle loved visiting the state fair every year. Each time, Morris would gaze at the helicopter rides and say, “Estelle, I’d love to take a ride in that helicopter!” But Estelle, always mindful of their expenses, would respond, “Morris, you know that helicopter ride costs $50, and 50 bucks is 50 bucks.” One year, as Morris turned 85, he became nostalgic. “Estelle,” he said, “I don’t know how many more chances I’ll get to experience that helicopter ride. I want to enjoy life while I still can.” Estelle hesitated, knowing the cost, but Morris’s desire touched her heart. “Alright,” she agreed, “let’s go for it.” They approached the helicopter pilot to buy their ticket. Having overheard their conversation, he proposed a deal: “If you both can stay quiet during the entire ride and not say a word, I’ll take you both for free. But if you utter even a single word, it’ll cost you 50 dollars.” Morris and Estelle nodded eagerly, excited about their adventure. Up they went, soaring in the helicopter. The pilot performed daring maneuvers, but not a single word escaped Morris or Estelle’s lips. They remained silent, even as the helicopter spun and twirled through the sky. When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris, impressed by their restraint. “You both did an amazing job,” the pilot said, smiling. “To be honest, I did everything P 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

I possibly could to make you scream, but surprisingly, you stayed quiet the entire time! You sure earned that 50 dollars!” Morris responded, “Well, to be honest, I almost said something when Estelle fell out, but you know what they say - 50 bucks is 50 bucks!” We often encounter situations where we prioritize short-term ‘gains’ or savings over long-term benefits. This common tendency, often called penny-wise and pound-foolish, can be observed in various aspects of basic fiscal decision-making processes. As a real-life example, this can be seen when consumers carry balances on their credit cards or home equity, even though they have cash in the bank to pay off their bills in full. They want the security of having cash ‘on hand’ even when it doesn’t make financial sense. It is also why many people leave substantial money in their checking accounts rather than placing it in more lucrative investments. Surprisingly, this approach can also be found on a larger scale within economic policies. The Federal Reserve will be meeting this week to determine if they are hiking rates again. While this article was completed before the meeting, I believe they will not raise rates this time. However, I think the Fed will leave the window open in case they need to move before year end to combat inflation. While controlling inflation is crucial

for economic stability, it’s important to consider alternative approaches that strike a balance between short-term fixes and long-term stability. In my opinion, the excessive hikes done thus far should be enough to curb inflation, and further increases will be beyond penny-wise and pound-foolish. It will cause the upcoming recession to be deeper than necessary. Similarly, as a household, people need to be mindful about how they allocate and manage their finances. In an environment such as the one we are in now, positioning yourself to succeed with short-term as well as long-term financial objectives is critical. Q Q

Dear Rachelli, I have a junk drawer but it has become more junk than useful. Also, I always seem to have papers flying everywhere, like recipes, grocery lists, bills and fliers. Any tips on this?

A: In organizing terms, we like to call this area The Command Center. This is where you keep your basic office supplies and whatever you need to process paperwork. For the Command Center, it’s advisable to give it height. A drawer on bottom and a cabinet on top. This way papers don’t end up in the drawer. The command center is most usually located in the kitchen since it is where many papers tend to land. Conquering the junk drawer: Step 1-Empty: Take everything out and purge what you no longer use. Step 2- Decide: What do I use on a daily basis? This drawer should not be used to store things you use once in a while. It is there for things you use very often, things you would need in a kitchen. Examples of these would be: pens, scissors, notepads, rubber bands, chargers. This can expand to anything that you might use in your kitchen that doesn’t have a home. The point is to only keep what you use daily in your kitchen. This ensures you that when you need something, you are not pushing aside things you barely use for your daily needs. Step 3- Containerize. The best way to set up a junk drawer is to buy

drawer

inserts.

You can get the ones that have many

different

sizes. This way you can customize your drawer like a puzzle to match your needs and lifestyle. (see picture) Setting up a paper system: Paper tends to pile up fast into a big confusing mess. It is crucial to set up a system to keep your papers moving. I recommend using magazine files to keep your paper system simple, yet efficient.(see picture). There are two main categories of paper: 1.

Reference:

This

includes

papers you keep referencing to. Ex: class lists, school lunches, manuals, calendars,

master

grocery

lists,

important phone numbers etc. These are papers to be taken out and put back in. 2. Action: This category includes papers that require action. For example: Bills, response cards, school forms, insurance papers etc. This category needs constant maintenance. Please note that this is not a home for the papers but rather a short stop before they get taken care of. The best way to make sure these papers don’t get piled up is to designate a specific time once or twice a week to process these papers. Try to cultivate the habit of taking care of these papers in a timely manner. Another way to ensure your papers don’t pile up is to use a narrow magazine file. This way you will be forced to empty it when it gets full.

SIMPLEST KOREAN “KALBI” RIBS By Jamie Geller 4 SERVINGS Beef flanken is the meat of choice for traditional Korean barbecue, also called kalbi (Galbi), which is Korean for rib. The thinly sliced flanken is marinated in an authentic Asian sauce, and finished with a sprinkling of sliced scallions to add color and a crisp oniony bite. Start to finish 4 hours or up to overnight to marinate, then under 15 minutes to grill. INGREDIENTS • 1 ½ pounds flanken • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce • ¼ cup mirin • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger • 2 garlic cloves, chopped (about 1 tablespoon) • 2 teaspoons sesame oil • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce • 2 teaspoons brown sugar • 2 scallions, white and green portions chopped (reserve half for garnish) • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper P 3 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

PREPARATION Combine the marinade ingredients in a bowl. Place the ribs in a shallow pan or large resealable bag. Pour three-quarters of the marinade over the ribs and refrigerate for four hours or overnight. Reserve the remaining marinade for basting. Light the grill or broiler and remove the ribs from the marinade. Grill over medium-high heat, for about 7 to 10 minutes, turning the meat often to prevent it from burning, basting each time you turn. Sprinkle with chopped scallion and serve with any remaining basting sauce on the side.
