Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale Attends Massive Rally in Washington D.C.

In a powerful display of unity, Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale joined forces with the Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations for an urgent, history-making, massive rally in support of Israel on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 1 pm at the National Mall in Washington, DC. Rabbi Yosef Weinstock, Senior Rabbi of Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale, and Philip Baratz, President of the Board, both who recently returned from an emergency mission to Israel with the Orthodox Union (OU), actively participated in the monumental rally in support of Israel. This event stood as the largest pro-Israel gathering in American history, as more than 290,000 people gathered for this unprecedented event. They were joined by other dedicated members of the community. Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale has been working tirelessly to raise urgent funds to support those affected by the atrocities of October 7th. The synagogue initiated an Israel Solidarity Fund, which, to date, has raised more than $130,000. The funds are being used to help and support displaced families, including children who have lost their families. Rabbi Weinstock stated, “I traveled to Washington D.C. to demand that the hostages in Gaza be freed, that Israel be allowed to exist and defend herself, and that we pay attention to the scourge of antisemitism that continues to plague our world.” Young Israel of Hollywood has already provided crucial support, including funds to assist the IDF, reserves, and affected families. However, the scope of the crisis demands further assistance, such as psychological support and reconstruction. The synagogue has been appealing to its P 1 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

members and the broader community for their generous support, emphasizing that donations of any size would make a significant difference in providing essential assistance to those affected by the crisis. The rally came after hundreds of anti-Semitic incidents around the United States, including college campuses, as well as across the globe. Rabbi Weinstock hopes that the rally shed light and truth to those who have been uninformed and misinformed. The emergency mission to Israel that Rabbi Weinstock and Phil Baratz recently returned from offered a unique opportunity for the synagogue’s leadership to demonstrate their unwavering support and to establish enduring relationships with those affected by the crisis in Israel. Phil Baratz, President of the Young Israel of Hollywood passionately said, “We are committed to doing our small part, uniting in solidarity for those most affected, to support them and assure them they are not alone.” One of mission’s top priorities was to connect Jewish communities in the United States with those most affected in Israel. This was achieved through relationship-

building with families who have been displaced, have been grieving, or in need of medical care, as well as those with family members who have been taken hostage. The mission sought to build a framework for ongoing support for the long term. It recognized the need to establish personal connections with individual families to ensure that they and their loved ones are supported. The mission paired communities with specific families to facilitate continued support and follow-up. “This is only the beginning,” said Rabbi Weinstock, “there will be a lot more to do including ongoing support for individuals and families as well as reconstruction and rebuilding communities. Ours will be an ongoing effort.” The November 14th rally took place about five weeks after Hamas invaded Israel on October 7th, savagely massacring, torturing, and wounding more than 1,400 people, including young children, women, the elderly, and families. There were still 240 victims being held hostage by Hamas. October 7th had been the deadliest singleday massacre of the Jewish people since the Holocaust. To contribute and support the Young Israel of Hollywood Israel Solidarity Fund please visit www.yih.org/form/ yihstandswithisrael The Young Israel of Hollywood - Fort Lauderdale, affiliated with the National Council of Young Israel and the Union of Orthodox Congregations (“OU”), offered numerous program and event opportunities enjoyed by its multigenerational and vibrant community. During the past three decades, the synagogue had grown to seven hundred families. For further information or media inquiries, please contact: 954-966-7877 or melissa@yih.org

ISRAEL

All My Friends are at War By Alexander Schwartz, IDF Veteran & Reservist, Founder @ Iron Support,

It was the summer of 2018 and another freezing night on the Egyptian border. As the operational unit representing the sector, part of the 7th Armored Brigade, we were tasked with executing a night time patrol along the Egyptian border. Our mission was to “deter and disrupt” Bedouin drug smugglers attempting to traffic their illegal goods over the border. A deadly game of cat and mouse. Salman Habkeh, an Arab Israeli and Platoon Commander of our battalion, took his patrol down to the border fence. They were searching for signs of Bedouin activity. Suddenly, from about 500 meters away, on the Egyptian side of the fence, an Egyptian military outpost spotted Salman and his patrol down on the border and opened fire. Through the heavy darkness, the Egyptians thought that they were shooting at what looked like a small group of Bedouins nearing the border fence on foot. Stunned and confused, Salman’s patrol dove for cover into a sand dune nearby. AK-47 rifle rounds snapped over their heads and kicked dirt up around them. Without hesitating, Salman climbed the dune with his chest raised, rifle in the air, and shouted at the Egyptians in Arabic, “we’re IDF, not Bedouins you idiots!” The shooting stopped. Salman and the Egyptian soldiers met at the fence and laughed about it after. In the early morning of November 2nd, 2023, Salman fell in battle in the northern Gaza strip. As news of his death spread, we couldn’t believe the reports. On October 7th, our battalion lost over 30 brothers, murdered and abducted. Now, with Salman’s death, we’ve been hurt again. Salman was a true Israeli hero, and a special part of Am Yisrael. He was adored by everyone in our battalion and put his heart and soul into everything he did. He laughed with us, fought with us, and when we lost a brother from the battalion on the Gaza border, hugged us at the funeral. And now, with his death, and half of my friends currently inside Gaza, the war has unfortunately become very personal. Finding myself here in Florida, 6,500 miles away from the conflict, I looked in the mirror. What should I do? I decided P 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

to pack my bags for Israel and told my commanders I was flying over. At the same time, I began organizing donations from my local community to bring equipment for friends in Israel. But as interest in what I was doing quickly spread throughout Parkland, I realized I needed to think bigger. With my established network of IDF officers, commanders, and units on the ground, I knew what supplies were needed the most, and how to get them directly to units on the ground. Thus, when the IDF launched Operation Iron Sword, I launched Iron Support. I launched Iron Support in partnership with Chabad of Parkland and their 501c3 Non-Profit, Chabad of West Parkland, and TheChesedFund.com. And after seeing the many fundraising campaigns that have tried to send equipment to Israel, only for it to be rejected at Ben Gurion airport, I made sure that what we send has already been pre-approved by the IDF. Of course, donations sent are tax-deductible and reach frontline units on the ground. As this project is not my “business,” there are no administrative fees. Every dollar goes to Israel. In the three weeks following October 7th, Iron Support has touched many soldiers on the ground. From Butterfly iQ+ Handheld Ultrasound devices that help combat medics conduct rapid triage on the field of battle, to Garmin Alpha 200 GPS devices and DJI Cameras that are, right now, being used by IDF special forces to search for the hostages underneath the Gaza Strip, Iron Support is providing critical medical & material aid to frontline units on the ground.

As I get the message out to more and more people, still, many more tell me they’re interested. On November 3rd, I was invited to speak at the Freedom Summit in Orlando, and met with all 67 Florida Republican Chairmen. I briefed them on what happened during October 7th, what is happening right now, and how donating to Iron Support directly helps the IDF find the hostages and save lives. During my presentation, I called up a special surprise guest to join me in presenting, Brigadier General Avigdor Kahalani, Israeli Hero of the Yom Kippur War. The chairmen were deeply moved to hear about what is transpiring in Eretz Yisrael and told me that people around the state are angry with the pro-Hamas response. They want to help the Jewish People. As Iron Support continues to create awareness on public radio, at private fundraisers, and at events around the state, the resounding support from communities both Jewish and Christian, near and far, has been truly remarkable. With my bags still packed and resting neatly by my front door, I may still go back to Israel soon enough. But the unique mission of Iron Support is touching our IDF soldiers much more than I would ever be able to on the ground in Israel. I could greatly use your support to spread this campaign, generate more awareness, and ultimately, to get our soldiers feeling right, properly prepared, and kitted out as they move forward in the coming weeks and months ahead. To echo the words of IDF Spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, “The first page of this chapter was tragic, but the rest of this chapter will be written by us.” Am Yisrael Chai! ISRAEL Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to tout the measures as he campaigns for president.

Florida House Passes a Measure to Provide More Security for Jewish Schools WUSF | By Associated Press

The bill provides $45 million in grants to secure Jewish schools and institutions and other places that could be vulnerable to hate crimes. The Senate will take up the measure on Wednesday. The Florida House passed measures during a special session Tuesday to help secure Jewish institutions and other places that could be targets of hate crimes, express support for Israel and further sanction companies that do business in Iran. The House passed a bill to provide $45 million in grants to secure Jewish schools and institutions, as well as other places that could be vulnerable to hate crimes. The House also voted to strengthen sanctions already in place against businesses that do business with Iranian companies, as well as measures to provide P 2 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

hurricane recovery money and boost money for developmentally disabled students. The Senate will take up the bills on Wednesday. The Legislature held the special session two months before its annual 60day session as DeSantis campaigns in Iowa touting his support for Israel. House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell said after the chamber adjourned that there’s really little more Florida can do to sanction Iran that the federal government isn’t already doing. “But it got to be a feel-good moment on the floor for a priority (DeSantis) wanted, and so now DeSantis gets to stand on the debate stage tomorrow and say that the Legislature was tough on Iran,” she said. “It is ultimately all about DeSantis. Pretty

much all of this could have waited until January.” Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to tout the measures as he campaigns for president. And though the bills were mostly symbolic, there was one lone attempt seeking lawmaker support for calls for a cease-fire in the IsraelHamas war. That was angrily shot down by Democrats and Republicans alike. “The fight is not just over there, but the fight is right here at home,” Rep. Randy Fine, the only Jewish Republican in the House, said as he introduced a resolution condemning Hamas and supporting Israel. “Every person that walks through a college campus or marches through the street saying, ‘Kill the Jews,’ is an extension of what we’re seeing over there.” The resolution passed on a 103-3 vote.

The Secret Ingredient to Weight Loss, Strength, and Body Composition - Protein By Dr. Ezra Miller In the journey to weight loss and body transformation, the conventional approach often involves eating less or completely eliminating certain food categories from a diet. Although this strategy will help you loose weight, current evidence supports that focusing on what to include in your diet is a far superior strategy to achieving, and maintaining, a healthy body composition as compared to looking out for what to avoid. Specifically, the research points to the role of protein, the building block of muscle, as a key player in achieving lasting results. Let’s explore the profound impact of protein on weight management, strength, and overall body composition. Understanding weight management begins with a concept referred to as our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This represents the minimum amount of energy - measured in “calories” - required for vital bodily functions. By consuming calories beyond our BMR, we risk storing the excess calories as fat. Here’s where protein steps in. As a catalyst for muscle growth, protein consumption will trigger out body to grow more muscle. Since increasing our muscle mass also increases our BMR, this essentially equates to more calories P 2 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

burned throughout the day, contributing significantly to weight management. Aim for a daily protein intake of 1 gram per pound of body weight, and witness not only increased strength and muscle mass but also a heightened BMR. In addition to increasing our energy requirements throughout the day, another strategy for weight management is to decrease our energy consumption. While all food categories provide energy - fats nine calories per gram, carbs four, and proteins four, the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) introduces a game-changing dynamic. This refers to the energy cost of digestion and it varies for each macronutrient: fat’s TEF is 0-3%, carbohydrates range from 5-10%, and protein leads with 2030%. The implications are clear—protein demands more energy to digest, resulting in significantly fewer calories being stored in the body. Choosing a protein-rich diet means feeling satisfied for longer and consuming fewer overall calories, a crucial advantage for effective weight loss. Beyond its impact on satiety and fewer consumption of calories, protein plays a vital role in curbing cravings, especially for sugar and easily digestible carbohydrates. The connection lies within

the gut microbiomes, which, interestingly, share an appetite for both protein and sugar. Consuming sufficient protein satisfies these microbiomes, reducing late-night trips to the pantry for unnecessary snacks. This dual benefit of satiety and reduced sugar cravings positions protein consumption as an ideal strategy in the quest for a healthier lifestyle. In the myriad ways to enhance health and transform your life, protein emerges as a foundational element. While animalsourced protein is often considered optimal, even a vegetarian diet can yield remarkable results with adequate protein intake. Start your day with a focus on protein, maintaining consistency in your dietary choices, and witness the transformative impact on your health and fitness journey. Protein isn’t just a nutrient—it’s the secret ingredient that unlocks your body’s potential. Ezra Miller is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Personal Trainer, and IDF veteran. He is currently the owner of Empower Fitness and specializes in longevity and injury prevention. For further inquiries, he can be reached at ezra.empowerfitness@gmail.com

BUSINESS

Sweet Revenge By Shalom Markman

There are very few things which I really dislike. Nondairy ice cream rank at the top, along with sleeping on an old pillow at someone else’s home. A bit farther down the list are dentist visits. I’d almost rather do two days of Yom Kipper, instead. Somewhere in the middle of this detailed list of grievances is taking my car to the shop, even for a simple oil change. It’s not that I can’t make the few minutes in my day, but I’m always getting up-sold. “Sir?” they’ll inevitably say towards the end of the job. “What’s up Derek?” I’ll curiously reply. “Well, we’re really not sure how this happened but somehow you’re out of reverse fluid for your engine.” I’ll also get informed that my front tires got switched to the back somehow. At least, it sounds this way to the untrained ear like mine. My point is, because I know very little about cars, I’ll often take my auto shops’ recommendation. The last thing I want is for my wife and kids in the car, a hundred miles from home, when the check engine light gives me a good evening wink. This past week, I finally decided it was time to give the dealership a taste of their medicine. That’s not to say I tricked them. I simply gave into my urge to sell them. I P 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

wanted to be the expert in this room for a change. When selling, I believe it only makes sense if you can hit on a current issue. The trick is being able to offer a solution, while calling attention to an issue that the prospect is currently experiencing. If the prospect needs to be sold on the problem first, the sell will be that much more difficult. No wise words here. Just stating the obvious. One way I do this is by asking a few questions before assuming the blatantly obvious. As I paid my seemingly overpriced bill, I saw my total being manually entered on their credit card machine for me to chip. My total was then manually entered into their management software. I’m personally all about integration. Not all businesses require the same level of it. Depending on how busy a business is, will depend on this specific frustration. So, I politely asked if they ever enter the wrong total in the management software end? I got resounding response. Even Martha in the corner eating her lunch perked up for this answer. “Yes, too often,” I was told. I was in the middle of this interview. I pressed on different points. I had to make sure I was of value before I pitched. The

only way to achieve this is to be curious. Was it really of value to have their management program synchronized with their payment system? Once my value was assured, I made the ask: “Who should I call tomorrow to chat about this?” Richard was going to be my man. I was even told this was a project he would enjoy. They were right. He was slowly changing things around and this really got him excited. The reason I’m now working hand and glove with Richard on this project is twofold. Yes, I took advantage of being a customer. But I took an extra step of being curious, befriending an office staff who would usually assume the role of gatekeeper. But I was now seen as a value adding proposition. I was a pleasure because I looked at their current situation and talked their language. So much so, that Martha way too focused on her corned beef sandwich, practically rooted for me. Sorry Martha, I still dislike car dealerships. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. It’s Not Me. It’s You! Telling Them What They Want To Hear.

An elderly man came to a health clinic and requested hearing aids for his wife. “From what distance does she hear well, and from what distance is it hard for her to hear?” the technician asked. The old man didn’t know. So the technician instructed him, “Go home and test her hearing and report back to us.” He gets home and, from a distance, asks his wife, “What did you make for dinner?” There was no reply. He walked a few feet closer and asked again, “What did you make for dinner?” Once again, there was no reply. This is more serious than I thought, the old man thinks. She really doesn’t hear. He approached another five feet closer: “What did you make for dinner?” Again, no reply. By the fifth time, he had already entered the kitchen and shouted, “What did you make for dinner?” She screams, “I told you four times already – soup with noodles. Why don’t you hear me?” Over the past few months, I have been in touch with someone who was looking to buy a home and had been in contact with me for the initial pre-approval and consultation. We became friendly and had many lengthy conversations about everything from the home-buying process, the considerations, and the steps he would need to follow once they found something. When reviewing his paperwork, we determined he could not qualify independently for the type of purchase price he was considering. We discussed alternatives, including a co-signer, and after multiple discussions, his father was willing to do it. They soon found a house that they loved, and we sprung into action to update our information and sign off on the preapproval. There were many other offers, and I did everything I could to guide them and advocate for them with the seller’s team to help their offer ‘stand out’ as most favorable. Thankfully, their bid was accepted, and they were moving forward. About two days later, my client called to say they truly appreciated all that I had P 3 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

done, but his father wanted to go with “his guy” for the actual mortgage. In fact, he said, as a “past client,” he was getting a “below market rate,” which seemed a little suspect to me. We had some back-andforth discussions, but ultimately, it was his father’s call, and I wished them well. It was not 24 hours later when I got my first text from the son, “Is this normal? The other mortgage guy said…” I called him, helped him understand the issue, and suggested how he navigated accordingly. A few days later, there was a “quick text” asking why they were charging so much for an appraisal. There were two emails about credit explanations that I helped him respond to. I hoped that he was near the finish line. The following week, he asked if he could speak with me about an appraisal issue. Unfortunately, the appraisal came in low, and now they were required to pay mortgage insurance or make up the difference. The appraiser under-appraised the property by less than one percent, something I haven’t seen in ages. The appraisal issue wasn’t the only mishap. The other underwriter was giving them a tough time about the father’s self-employment income and couldn’t fully understand his compensation structure. I provided them with my notes and insights on how we qualified him, and they were satisfied. He was genuinely grateful and offered to pay me as a consultant, which I appreciated but declined. At that point, I took a particular interest in his situation because I was so curious how they could offer him such a favorable rate, despite

qualifying him under the same program as the one I suggested. I asked to see their paperwork and discovered they were being charged over $9000 for that “lower rate.” In this environment, I would advise any home buyer not to “buy down” the rate because there will be refinancing opportunities in the future, and it’s a waste of money now to pay for such a short-term benefit. The calls and texts continued to increase, and I was more than happy and willing to guide him to ensure his loan was approved on time. He kept asking me if what they were telling him was normal. Each time my answer was, “It’s not you. It’s them.” The incompetence he was experiencing was frightening. I wouldn’t say this was a bait-and-switch situation, but I would certainly say that the other lender just told them what they wanted to hear to seal the deal. Unfortunately, not everyone has an advocate that can help them navigate a frustrating experience elsewhere. We often accept things at face value, not recognizing that there is neglect on the other end. Never be afraid to ask questions and insist on explanations – or call me for free advice. I am more than happy to help anyone who feels stuck elsewhere. Shmuel Shayowitz (NMLS#19871) is a highly regarded Real Estate & Finance Executive, Writer, Speaker, Coach, and Advisor. Thanksgiving Recipe By Michelle Soussan

Happy Thanksgiving!!! I hope your day is full of a million moments of gratitude. And if you’re like me, you like a great meal without spending the whole day slaving in the kitchen. The (tur) key is to get it all done as fast as we can- how about in a little over just one hour? Turkey stuffed with savory mushrooms and spinach will step up your dinner game. A quick prep time makes these an easy pick for dinner tonight. • 96 MIN DURATION • 81 MIN COOK TIME • 1 5 MIN PREP TIME • 8 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS • 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 medium onion, peeled and diced • 6 button mushrooms, sliced (about 2 cups) • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 cup frozen spinach, defrosted and drained well • 2 boneless, skinless turkey breasts (about 2 pounds) • 1 large egg, beaten • 3 tablespoons matzoh meal • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt • pinch red pepper flakes • 1 cup chicken broth

PREPARATION 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Heat 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (evoo) in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté 4 minutes, or until slightly softened. 2. 2. Add mushrooms and garlic; sauté 5 to 7 minutes more, or until tender 3. 3. Stir in spinach and cook 2 minutes; cool for 10 to 15 minutes. 4. 4. Working with one turkey breast at a time, carefully slice horizontally through the middle, without cutting all the way through, to make a large pocket in the center. 5. 5. In a large bowl, combine mushroom and spinach mixture with egg, matzoh meal, parsley, salt, and pepper flakes; stir to combine. 6. 6. Divide mixture evenly between each turkey breast and stuff to fill the pocket. 7. 7. Heat remaining 3 tablespoons evoo in a large dutch oven or heavy bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat. Sear turkey breasts for 3 to 5 minutes per side until lightly browned. 8. 8. Carefully add broth; cover and transfer to preheated oven. Cook 45 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165°F. 9. 9. Let rest 10 minutes before cutting each breast into 8 slices.

FOOD

The Kosher Foodie Judy Waldman, The ORB

The refrain from one of my favorite Uncle Moishy songs is “We never ever ever mix meat and milk together, we sing the kosher song la la la…” Ah, were life, or at least kashruth, so simple! Kashruth can really begin as early as on the farm. The milk, the animals, the wheat are all big subjects at the origin of kosher food. Then we get to the factories and food production; next there’s packaging and distribution. Excuse me while I yawn, but we want to get to the good part: the eating! So let’s assume there was supervision and the food is kosher all the way up to the back door of our kosher facility. What’s next? The local kosher supervising agency and their mashchigim! The largest and oldest of the agencies in Florida is the ORB, the Orthodox Rabbinical Board of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. It’s not the ORBPBC because, for one, it would be too cumbersome, but also because the ORB started in Broward County and later grew to include other counties. The ORB was founded in 2000 by Rabbi Edward Davis of the Young Israel of Hollywood and Rabbi Aaron Lieberman who serves as the ORB’s Av Beis Din. The ORB executive board has grown to include Rabbi Efrem Goldberg of Boca Raton Synagogue as the Kashrus Co-Chair, Rabbi Levi Feigelstock, Rabbi Schneor Cheruty, and a Board of Directors that’s like a Who’s Who of Rabbanim. The administrative offices on Hollywood Blvd. house seven rabbis and a secretary. If a mashgiach is a supervisor, then this minion of rabbis are the supervising supervisors. How many mashgichim do they supervise? Seven hundred! There are currently seven hundred certified mashgichim working for the ORB. Approximately 350 are full-time workers and work every day. The other half are substitutes or part-time mashgichim. The ORB mashgichim supervise more than 200 establishments. The break-down is approximately 20-30 supermarkets, about 50 private catering companies, numerous schools, assisted living facilities, Jewish Community Centers, and our favorite destination: restaurants. The mashgichim demographics are interesting. Seventy percent are men. I would have guessed it to be higher, but am glad to see our kosher rabbis are so gender neutral and were at the forefront of hiring a female mashgichah decades ago. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein zt’l permitted women mashgichim, but the Israeli Chief Rabbinate didn’t approve them until 2013. I was surprised to hear that the oldest ORB P4 0 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

mashgichim are in their early seventies with the youngest mashgiach holding at 17 and the majority being on the younger side. I was betting that because standing on a wet tile floor for hours checking vegetables for bugs is not a conducive line of enticement on the job description for our senior mashgichim. But the reason is because of technology. A mashgiach is required to have a smart phone and be proficient in the use of apps. For openers (ha-ha) the kitchen doors are usually locked with an electronic lockbox. The mashgiach has to code in the lockbox from his phone. As the delivery truck unloads pallets of products, the mashgiach checks each item to assure it has an accepted hashgacha, and then writes the hechsher on the invoice. Frequently many pages long, each invoice then gets cloud-loaded to the ORB. Makes looking for bugs sound easy. Thus, we have a plethora of yungerling whose head being in the clouds is a good thing. The new move is to have the mashgiach be the one who actually orders the food, whereas previously it was usually the owner or manager. This not only simplifies the process, but helps prevents mistakes usually discovered at delivery. Currently, the ORB has a 20% rate of mashgichim who also order the incoming products. Other than being smartphone savvy, the requirements to be a mashgiach are relatively easy. Of course one must be shomer Shabbos and shomer mitzvah to start with, and the rabbi listed as a recommendation on the application will be contacted to assure that the applicant does indeed attend minyan thrice daily and wears tzitzit. Well, ok, not for the 30% of us who prove our frumkeit with zniut. Once approved, the applicant then takes an on-line course offered by the Kosher Institute of America in conjunction with the AKO (Association of Kosher Organizations), of which the ORB has been a long-standing member. The KIA online course is a fantastic educational tool for personal use, as well as a passing grade being necessary for professional certification. The KIA offers a “Home Edition” which I highly

recommend for anyone who does more than tip-toe through the kitchen. A refresher course and recertification is required every year for all mashgichim. After passing the course, the ORB requires a two-week hands-on training at a high impact facility. In addition to unlocking the kitchen, refrigerators and freezers, and checking for accepted hechsherim, the mashgiach is now ready for the hands-on work of lighting the stoves, ovens, and burners, plugging in cookers, making sure the cameras are all in position, and then the produce checking if needed. All kitchen equipment and items are painted with designated colors signifying meat, milk, fish, or parve. For carryout items, each item must be wrapped with two simonim in place. The “signs” are the restaurant specific tape, mashgiach’s initials, or a receipt taped with restaurant tape. This is to assure that the recipient knows the food just transported was not tampered with enroute. With approximately 150 ORB certified restaurants ranging in locale from Miami to Orlando, there’s lots of opportunity for take-out orders. The ORB is not just about supervising mashgichim, the ORB is the “big picture” of ensuring that the kosher consumers of Florida are really purchasing and eating products that are of the highest kashruth standards. In continuing to find ways to service the Jewish community, the ORB recently started a Whats App chat for consumers with questions about particular products or establishments. In addition to the rabbis monitoring the Mashgichim Whats App for working mashgichim with an immediate question, and the Whats App for posting jobs with particular importance being the need for an immediate mashgiach substitute, Rabbi Feigelstock answers questions from the consumers like me and you. Type a question or send a picture. But because the Rabbi is inundated with inquiries, before sending a picture of a questionable hechsher, check the list for yourself. To join the other 928 participants, check out ORB Community Kosher Chat: https://chat. whatsapp.com/KSvj685zuvcIJZp6ehEKgv And don’t forget: we never ever ever mix meat and milk together!
