New Olah Soldier Hopes to Help IDF with Int’l Relations By ARIELLA MARSDEN

“Both of my parents escaped antisemitism in their countries, I understood that this is our only home. That’s why it’s so important to come to Israel and protect our land.” Following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel and the subsequent war, antisemitism abroad has become far more extreme than it was before, but this doesn’t surprise soldier Madeleine Bollag, who grew up in Los Angeles and whose parents grew up in Switzerland and Iran experiencing antisemitism. “On my dad’s side, my grandparents survived the Holocaust,” she told The Jerusalem Post. “One of them The Bollag Family (credit: COURTESY/MADELEINE BOLLAG) was in a concentration camp. possible to change people’s minds My mother grew up in Iran, and her father was arrested with 12 because some are too set in their other Jews. She escaped to Israel when beliefs, but that some people are essentially following a trend and can she was 18 with her father.” Bollag made aliyah three years ago be convinced otherwise. “When I was growing up, we always with her family and enlisted in the IDF three months ago. She is currently in talked about moving to Israel because Michve Alon, which is where new olim my mom’s family was there, but it was and lone soldiers acquire the Hebrew always really hard,” she said. “Then they will need for their service. Bollag three years ago, my mom passed hasn’t been assigned a job yet for away, and since the whole family lives when she finishes her basic training, in Israel, my dad realized it was time but she hopes to be assigned to a job to go.” Bollag’s mother grew up in Iran, in international relations or the IDF she said, and at the time Jews were Spokesperson’s Unit. “Growing up outside of Israel, okay and had a strong community, I always felt that there was a lot of but then suddenly, 13 Jewish men, misinformation,” she explained. “I including Bollag’s grandfather, were always felt that I had to explain to arrested and accused of spying for people what is going on and open their Israel and the United States. He was soon released, but a police eyes to the truth.” She added that it’s not always officer advised them that Bollag’s P 1 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

grandfather would be killed if he stayed in Iran, so he escaped with her mother when she was 17. “Her other siblings couldn’t go with so they had to leave the whole family behind,” recounted Bollag. “She couldn’t tell anyone she was leaving.” Her mother made it to Israel from Iran during the Second Intifada and was in three separate terrorist attacks. She then began working for the Jewish Agency, traveling around Europe telling her story to Jewish communities. During this time, she met Bollag’s father in Switzerland, and they got married and had Bollag before moving to LA. Bollag said that she didn’t experience much antisemitism growing up in a Jewish community in LA, but all the same, she always knew Israel was her home. “Throughout my life, we visited Israel every summer,” she said. “Because both my parents escaped antisemitism in their countries, I understood that this is our only home. That’s why it’s so important to come to Israel and protect our land.” At Michve Alon, Bollag is surrounded by lone soldiers and other olim, some of whom came from Ukraine. “It’s very scary, traumatic, and hard, but I’m so happy that I’m in the army at this time,” she said. “There’s no better time to serve. It’s so meaningful to be with people who aren’t Israeli. Everyone here came to Israel to defend the country.”

Rosh Chodesh Kislev kicked off with a great start at Ohr Hatorah this past week. After a beautiful davening, all the talmidim headed to breakfast where delicious donuts waited for them in honor of the new month and Chanukah. Following the treats, Rabbi Kimche, our dean of students, gathered us all in the auditorium for a special program. First, we heard words of Torah from Rabbi Abitbol, who spoke to us about what being in the month of Kislev and time of Chanukah should practically mean for us, especially with the relevance of the war in Eretz Yisrael. Following the D’var Torah, we competed by grade in a Jewish trivia game, which the 9th graders took victory in. We can’t wait to see what else lies ahead for us at Ohr this month! WIZO’s success and longevity can be explained thanks to its adaptability and to the support of its volunteers, sponsors, donors, and professional staff. Fats, Cholesterol, and How to Live Free of Disease By Dr. Ezra Miller

In previous editions, we’ve explored how carbs fuel the body and proteins provide structural support. Fats, however, offer a dual role—providing energy and aiding cellular and hormonal structure. Despite their significance, fats often garner a bad reputation due to their link to obesity and increased cardiovascular risk. While excessive dietary fat consumption might elevate blood lipid and cholesterol levels, the direct connection to cardiovascular disease remains unclear. Numerous factors beyond fat intake influence disease risk, challenging the idea that eating fats or cholesterol inherently heightens cardiovascular disease risk. Fats typically fall into two main categories: saturated fats, densely packed and solid at room temperature, and unsaturated fats, less densely packed and liquid at room temperature. In the late 1900s, Dr. Ancel Keys suggested that since dietary saturated fats could elevate blood cholesterol levels, this can increase the risk of heart disease. Yet, solid associations between a fat-rich diet and disease are still debated, raising questions about what truly causes cardiovascular disease and whether we should be excessively concerned about fat intake. The concern over dietary fats P 2 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

often centers on atherosclerosis, the buildup of arteryclogging plaque linked to cardiovascular issues. Cholesterol molecules carried in low-density carriers can lodge in artery walls that, when combined with inflammation, foster plaque accumulation that limits blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to tissues. This arterial narrowing, especially in critical areas like the brain or heart, can lead to heart attacks or strokes due to decreased oxygen supply. Subsequently, lowering levels of low-density cholesterol molecules via dietary recommendations seems like the logical first step to preventing the risk of cardiovascular issues. Yet, with the exception of transfats, a direct correlation between fat consumption and heart disease remains elusive. In fact, studies indicate that the Mediterranean diet, abundant in dietary fats, offers significant health benefits, possibly due to healthy food sources and other antiinflammatory components. Perhaps the best conclusion based on the current evidence points to increasing consumption of monounsaturated fats while decreasing that of saturated fats. Additionally, making sure to include plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids on a daily

basis (found abundantly in fish) can assist in brain and cardiovascular health. This, along with increased consumption of complex carbohydrates, may reduce heart disease risk and enhance overall health. Broadly speaking, avoiding trans-fats entirely and prioritizing monounsaturated fats, seems most beneficial. Aiming for 20% to 30% of our diet to consist of fats— sourced from healthy options like olive oil, avocados, and fish—is a good place to start. However, it is important to remember that individualizing dietary recommendations based on personal reactions, routine blood work, and health markers is key to finding the right balance. Remember, beyond diet, maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle by reducing stress, improving sleep, and increasing physical activity, is crucial in determining cardiovascular health and forming the foundation of a disease-free, healthy life. Ezra Miller is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Personal Trainer, and IDF veteran. He is currently the owner of Empower Fitness and specializes in longevity and injury prevention. A Diamond in the Rough By Shalom Markman

I know nothing about concrete drilling except that the drills used are diamond encrusted. Diamonds are the hardest material in the world. This is measured by determining scratch resistance. Diamonds are usually comprised of 99.7% carbon. There are actually two harder substances found. One of them created by man, and one found in space. A laboratory synthetic nanomaterial called wurtzite boron nitride, and a substance found in meteorites called lonsdaleite. What’s the significance? Not much. But I know this information because I enjoy getting to know my clients like this concrete drilling company. The story of landing this client is actually a very simple one, but an interesting case study. It was October 2017 and I had been getting my feet wet with sales for a few months. My day would start by picking a part of town in New York City or the surrounding burrows. I would park and walk down the avenues, simply letting myself in to the businesses of my choice and start a conversation with whomever I saw. The plan was always to end up at my decision maker. One such decision maker turned client called me into his office as I finalized the installation of their updated payment software. “Could you help my buddy the same way you helped me,” inquired Dan? “Yes,” I replied, sitting tensely in an arm chair across from my newly minted client. Don picked up the phone and called his boy Ray. “Hey,” shouted Don. “I have this kid in here who just lowered our procesing fees. Can you see him in 10 minutes at your office?” It seemed that Ray was used to these daily antics from his buddy. Ray obliged, and Don sent me on my way. I was out the door before I even asked for directions. Maybe I was nervous, maybe I was excited. As I made my over to Ray’s business, I had to admit that this future opportunity was a miracle. I was too afraid to ask for a referral from this business I just closed! It was my client who put his foot down and gave his pal no choice but to have me at his office. Why didn’t I ask for it on my own? I wasn’t afraid to walk into Don’s business and ask for his business. Why was asking for a referral any different? I finally found a parking space that blocked the businesses driveway (great first impression), and made my way up to a waiting Ray. I have to say, it was one of the easiest sales I’ve ever made. His assistant was tasked with getting me all the paper work and info I requested. Two weeks later, I boarded this new concrete drilling company. So why did I have such a hard time asking for a referral from a business that I knew I was helping and adding value for? Spoiler alert, I still do. Like diamonds, I still find little harder to ask for. There’s a simple answer I can offer for

six years ago. I hadn’t fully appreciated how powerful a referral was. But why does that still pertain to me, now? I’d say it’s a mix of the following two truths. 1. It feels selfish. 2. The fear of rejection. It’s one thing to appear selfish with someone we don’t yet have a relationship with. We’ll likely never interact with them again. The same goes for rejection. When we now have a relationship with that individual as a client, rejection is that much more personal. Asking for an introduction from a client has the possibility of getting stymied and we’re that much more uncomfortable. So, I’m talking to myself here. Welcome to the industry of sales. Step one, bring on a client. Step two. Be so valuable to your clients that they want to be referring you. It won’t however always be on the top of their mind. That’s natural. But they’ll likely be happy you asked. When you believe in your value, shouldn’t it cause you to believe in it universally? Give your client the opportunity to help that process. They’ll probably be glad you asked. You’ll now also have a reason to go the extra mile for them too.

Chicken with Spiced Mango Rice By Jamie Geller Savor this fusion of ingredients as they combine to make a melody in your mouth. 20MINDURATION 15MINCOOK TIME 5MINPREP TIME 4 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, flattened if very thick • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste • 1 cup cooked brown rice • 1/2 cup cooked wild rice • 2 large ripe but firm mangos, peeled, pitted and diced • 1 green onion, thinly sliced • 1/3 cup shelled, roasted and salted pistachios • 3 tablespoon dried cranberries • pinch or dash cinnamon • pinch or dash allspice P 3 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

PREPARATION Season chicken on both sides with salt and pepper. Stir together rice, mango, onion, pistachios, cranberries and spices in a medium foil pan or on a very large piece of heavy duty foil. Place about 1/3 cup of rice mixture in the center of each chicken breast. Bring in the ends and sides to enclose, then tie with kitchen string to seal in filling. Grill over medium-high heat for 5 minutes on each side, then place chicken on top of remaining rice mixture. Cover with foil or seal foil package, leaving room for air to circulate. Grill for 5 minutes more. SERVING TIPS: If desired, slice chicken into medallions to serve.
