Trump Launches Charm Offensive in Bid for Florida Republicans By KIMBERLY LEONARD, Politico The former president is trying to entice state officials ahead of a GOP summit. Supporters of former President Donald Trump gather outside Mar-A-Lago. Donald Trump’s team in recent days has been trying to shore up support among the Sunshine State’s key Republicans. Former President Donald Trump is wooing Florida Republicans before and after this weekend’s big Republican gathering in Central Florida — his latest move to undercut Ron DeSantis in the governor’s own state. DeSantis and Trump will join other GOP presidential candidates and top Florida Republicans speaking at the state GOP’s Freedom Summit in Kissimmee Saturday. Trump, who’s still dominating the polls in early states and nationally, will close out the event while DeSantis will deliver a speech earlier in the day. Trump’s team in recent days has been trying to shore up support among the Sunshine State’s key Republicans. He sent invitations to local party leaders to join him at a rally in Hialeah scheduled for Nov. 8 — the same day as the Republican debate next week in Miami that he refused to attend. To entice the invitees, Trump is offering them “special guest seating” and “expedited entry” to the rally, which will be held at a stadium, and attendees can bring a guest to the event in Hialeah, a Hispanic-majority Miami neighborhood, according to an invitation viewed by Playbook. The passes will give guests a way to skip P 1 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

long lines and offer better seating at the event. Then, the evening after the GOP debate, Trump is hosting Republican leaders from Florida’s 67 counties at Mar-a-Lago. He’s invited at least 200 party officials — each with a guest — to his resort for a “meet-and-greet opportunity.” Light food and drinks are expected to be served, and Trump is scheduled to speak, said three Republican invitees to the event who plan to attend. They were granted anonymity to speak freely about the situation. “It’s important to get people together in a room so they feel appreciated,” said one Florida Republican invited to both the rally and the Mar-a-Lago event, who called next week’s events a “smart side-byside.” While Trump has the backing of most of Florida’s GOP congressional delegation, DeSantis has more support from Republican members of the state Legislature. But even that could change. NBC News this week reported that Trump’s allies are actively trying to convince Republican legislators who endorsed DeSantis to withdraw

their support and back Trump. At least one former DeSantis ally has flipped. Rep. Randy Fine, Florida’s only Republican Jewish state lawmaker, last week changed his endorsement from DeSantis to Trump, claiming that the governor hadn’t done enough to counter antisemitism. Yesterday, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) also endorsed Trump, though that’s less surprising since the senator is an ally of the former president and has long had poor relations with DeSantis. Scott’s endorsement was first reported by The Messenger. Both Fine and Scott will be speaking at Saturday’s Freedom Summit. Andrew Romeo, DeSantis’ campaign spokesperson, pushed back on Trump’s effort, noting that the governor has more endorsements from state legislators than the former president in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. But it’s hard to ignore how Trump’s influence in the state is reshaping the presidential race. In September, officials with the Republican Party of Florida voted to remove a provision in state bylaws that required any candidate seeking to be included on the March 19 presidential primary ballot to vow loyalty to the eventual nominee. The vote was seen as a victory for Trump, whose allies had pressed state Republicans to rescind the pledge. It was one of the clearest signs yet of DeSantis’ waning clout amid his struggles on the campaign trail.

Ultra-Orthodox Training to Defend their Communities By Roni Green Shaulov, YNETNews Israel

Out of the difficult Gaza invasion campaign and the growing fear of the development of a multi-front war, a new initiative has been born in ultra-Orthodox society: the establishment of defense and guard systems within ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods located near the seam line or in mixed cities. The program, called ‘Mishmar Ha’am’, or ‘The People’s Guard’ is already starting to operate in about 20 ultraOrthodox neighborhoods across the country and is continuing to expand. The goal of the project, a joint initiative of the Haredi Institute for Public Affairs and Achim L’Oref, which receives training from the Hashomer Hachadash organization, is to concentrate all volunteer activities under one umbrella, to provide appropriate training for volunteers who carry weapons and those who do not, and to assist in the process of issuing a weapon license for those who want it and are permitted to. “The ultra-Orthodox public is facing a significant challenge,” said program director Roni Ayalon Hirsch, an officer in charge of the Defense Forces patrol. “We have enemies for who the first place they would prefer to go is the least protected and skilled public, which has no way to defend itself. We have established a defense body that will help the ultra-Orthodox public as well as any neighborhood, settlement and agricultural farm that needs it. There are communities whose residents have permission to issue weapons, in Beitar Illit there are already 2,000 ultra-Orthodox people with a gun license, but they have no idea what a weapon is. They don’t know how to operate a weapon, what to do with a weapon, and even worse, what not to do with a weapon.” “We are locating coordinators P 1 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

in the communities who have some experience, those who were soldiers in the army or ultra-Orthodox who volunteered in the police, and each such coordinator will know how to coordinate all the forces under him: unarmed volunteers, armed volunteers who took out private weapons and those who are in police alert classes. The goal That it will be used both in emergency and routine, for deterrence as well as for warning,” according to Ayalon Hirsch. The ultra-Orthodox public, says Hirsch, supports the initiative. “They came in droves,” he said. “We have centers in Har Nof, Givat Ze’ev, Beit Shemesh, Rekhasim, Haifa and more. We received a call from the Rebbe of Vizhnitz to help them set up such a system in their community. Both the rabbis and the residents are very cooperative.” Uri Arbis, from Ramat Shlomo in Jerusalem, founded and coordinates the security group in his neighborhood. “Until October 7, my attempt to explain the importance of establishing civil defense in the neighborhoods fell on deaf ears,” he said. “After the massacre, I realized that an expedited process of a civilian force that could defend itself needed to be established here, so we built a civilian defense system that is supported and based on civilians with weapons and an alert squad that operates together under the police.

“Every time the residents of the neighborhood see me, they tell me thank you very much and that I am doing a great mitzvah,” he added. “The vast majority want to volunteer, even those who cannot draw a weapon. We want to be independent, so that even if the police don’t come, as happened in the south, we won’t be like sheep to the slaughter. All the rabbis in the neighborhood are very supportive. There is approval from them. I went to walk on Shabbat with weapons and also with a cell phone, without touching then of course if there is no need.” Shmuel Drilman, a resident of Har Nof who volunteers in the program, explained its necessity. “We were in a situation where there was nothing and there was no coordination between gun owners,” he said. “Within a few days, many volunteers were organized and we managed to establish a standby squad of close to 50 gun owners.” On Rifman, vice president and cofounder of the Hashomer Hachadash, which leads the training, summarized the success so far of the initiative. “Following the terrible disaster in the south, the ultra-Orthodox sector also realized the existential need for local protection of the ultra-Orthodox communities, as well as the need to volunteer for the effort and help where needed. For this purpose, the Hashomer Hachadash organization volunteered to assist in the training and activation of the volunteers who will enlist in the People’s Guard initiative. The training will be carried out subject to the security forces, including the Israel Police and the local authorities. The decision to establish the People’s Guard is a defining event in Israeli society and everyone who can come and support the process and the volunteers should join,” according to Rifman.

Fallen IDF Soldier’s Donated Organs Save Israeli Lives By JERUSALEM POST STAFF

Shoham Ben Harush wanted his organs to have a life-changing impact on others, his father said. In the end, they did. Family and friends attend the funeral of Sgt. Shoam Moshe BenHarush who died of his wounds after being severely injured in the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, at the Haspin cemetery in northern Israel. The organs of a 20-year-old soldier who was mortally wounded during Hamas’s terror campaign in Israel’s South on October 7 have gone on to change the lives of five other people, Israel’s National Transplant Center said on Wednesday. After being wounded, the soldier, Shoham Ben Harush, was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of the doctors, P 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

however, he succumbed to his wounds. In the wake of the loss, Ben Harush’s family requested that his organs be donated to save the lives of others. Because of this donation, five others received organs they critically needed. At Sheba Medical Center, a 48-year-old was able to receive a heart transplant, a 59-year-old was able to receive a corneal transplant, and a 57-year-old received a kidney transplant. At Hadassah-University Medical Center, a 61-year-old was able to get a liver transplant and at Petah Tikva’s Beilinson Hospital, another kidney transplant was made possible for a 69-year-old who needed it. “Shoham is our fifth child out of six. He was good-looking and goodhearted, a cheerful and humble young man,” Harush’s father Ilan said. “We

knew he wanted to serve in combat units. He served in the Nahal Brigade’s reconnaissance unit and stayed on Shabbat for Simchat Torah. I heard stories that he fought bravely at the Kerem Shalom outpost to prevent terrorists from infiltrating.” In addition, Ben Harush’s sacrifice for the State of Israel went far beyond the line of duty. “Regarding the organ donation,” the bereaved father said. “I had a dilemma between the importance of the matter and the emotional response that said, ‘Don’t touch my child.’ When I heard from my wife, Shoham ‘s mother, that he wanted to donate his organs, I realized that he saw beyond what I saw, and I trusted his decision. The knowledge that he saved lives provides comfort alongside the great pain.”

Hagaon Rav Shaul Alter Shlit”a Visits Yeshiva Beis Moshe Chaim and Mechina of South Florida This Tuesday morning, Yeshiva Beis Moshe Chaim and Mechina of South Florida was granted the exalted honor of a visit by the Rosh Hayeshiva Hagaon Rav Shaul Alter shlit”a, who davened shachris in the yeshiva and spoke warm words of Chizuk and encouragement for the talmidim. Harav Nisson Friedman shlit”a, the Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva, introduced the Rosh Hayeshiva with a short preface, giving the students a glimpse into the golden legacy of the Rosh Hayeshiva Rav Shaul Alter’s ancestors, from the Chiddushei Harim until the Pnei Menachem, all of whom shared a common attribute of being leaders who went far beyond the confines of their communities, taking responsibility to the spiritual well-being of yidden worldwide, investing copious efforts in bringing yidden closer to Hashem and guiding them in the ways of the Torah. The Rosh Hayeshiva Hagaon Rav Shaul Alter shlit”a began his Divrei Chizuk by addressing the boys with a question in English: “What is your name?”, thereafter he switched to Hebrew for the rest of his address. He continued by explaining his initial question. “What are you called? A Yeshivaman? That is the commonly used term for a talmid of a yeshiva. But in essence, this isn’t the correct phrase. Rav Alter shlit”a Speaks at Boca Raton Synagogue Regarding Recent Events in Israel With the permission of Harav Goldberg shlita, the rav of the kehilla, the other rabbanim and the entire gathering. Rav Goldberg spoke about the fear [that people have in the wake of the recent events]. I would say that we have to talk about the confusion. People do not know what to think, how to view this, what needs to be done. I would like to begin with a phrase. Its origin is non-Jewish, but I would like to express it in a Jewish manner. You have certainly noticed when you enter an attorney’s office and on the floor is written, “My G-d, give me the courage to change what I can change, give me the courage to accept what I cannot change, and give me the wisdom to differentiate between P 2 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

what I can change and what I cannot change. This, to me, has a slightly nonJewish smell to it — with apologies to anyone who has this phrase written in his office. I would like to express it in a Jewish manner. We don’t want anything to be changed. The Ribbono Shel Olam runs the world capably. “My G-d, give me strength to do what You demand of me, what You ask of me in the current situation. And give me strength to trust in You when it comes to matters that are not in my hands and that I cannot change. And give me the wisdom to differentiate [in times of] confusion, doubt and fog to know in which [areas] I need to act and in which [areas] I need to trust in

You. Where does my hishtadlus end and bitachon in You begin.” It is clear — the Gemara in Avodah Zarah says it — that in the future, Hashem will summarize the 6,000 years the world [existed] — what each nation did, what they accomplished. Did they accomplish anything? Not for this world — that is no longer relevant; this world will become null — but what they accomplished for the benefit of Torah, of the Yidden, of the Ribbono Shel Olam, of course. Each nation will try to prove that everything they did, their inventions and accomplishments, were meant to benefit the Yidden, that it benefited Torah, benefited those who learned [Torah], benefited Yidden. There are nations that waged wars,

COMMUNITY NEWS and even those wars occasionally benefited Yidden. There was once a group of geonim who were captured and exiled — the spread of Torah in the world happened through wars. Hashem will tell them, “Warfare? I did that; you did not wage war.” The Gemara says there that all the things they said they accomplished, without Him a person cannot move a finger. However, outwardly, these people built bridges, those people built markets, others made other things. Warfare is what Hashem arranges. Therefore, the first thing we must know is that all the events that happened on Simchas Torah and which continues until now — there is Someone who is directing it and there is Someone who is doing this deliberately: Our devoted Father is directing it. It is true that Jewish blood was spilled, it is true that Yidden were abducted — we hope they will be successful to bring them back b’ezras Hashem — but we know that our merciful Father is in charge and he is directing it. We must therefore first calm down. Nothing happens coincidentally and nothing happens randomly. The event is organized, deliberate and planned. There is Someone who is directing it — with the goal of a good conclusion. Hashem is the Shomer Yisroel. It is possible that someone guarding the border may have fallen asleep, but He will not sleep nor slumber. There is Someone whose eye is constantly looking out for the Yidden. We, for our part, must do what Yidden do: First of all, empathy — we must genuinely care, our hearts

very, very much wanted to hear and see the living miracle. There were open miracles. But [the main think is] empathy, empathy, empathy! I care about Klal Yisroel. Let us elevate ourselves a little. We see that Hashem is demanding something from us. Something must happen; we cannot return to our routine. Sleep - The Elixir of Life By Dr. Ezra Miller

In today’s fast-paced world, prioritizing sleep often takes a back seat, despite its critical role in our overall health. Quality sleep is not just about feeling rested; it impacts hormone regulation, brain function, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Quality sleep can even positively impact mental health, the immune system, and body weight, amongst other things. But what exactly does sleep do for us, and how can we ensure we get the highquality sleep our bodies need? Sleep is our body’s essential reset button, allowing us to recover from the daily physical and mental stresses that shape our lives. It has two primary stages: non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, cycling roughly every 90 minutes. The first half of the night is dominated by deep sleep, essential for physical recovery, while the second half emphasizes REM sleep, crucial for rejuvenating our mental and hormonal processes. Studies by sleep scientist Dr. Matthew Walker have shown that consistently sleeping less than even seven hours each night can lead to objective impairments in brain and body function. Emphasizing the importance of adequate rest, Dr. Walker further writes that, according to current research, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life expectancy.” Suffice it to say, sleep is important and by incorporating a few simple techniques, we can maximize its health benefits. To ensure high-quality sleep, some of the strategies we can employ include light exposure, consistency with sleep times, and temperature. Regulating our internal biological clock, or circadian rhythm, is essential for aligning our sleep-wake cycle. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is P 2 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

a potent method, as is exposing ourselves to natural sunlight throughout the day. The recommendation from Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neurobiology professor at Stanford University, is to aim for 10 minutes of morning, afternoon, and sunset exposure. Additionally, as the human body needs to lower the core temperature by two to three degrees to sleep well, setting the room temperature between 65-70 degrees can facilitate this cooling process. Alternatively, a warm bath before bedtime can help trigger the body’s cooling mechanisms. In contrast, certain factors such as caffeine, alcohol, and evening light exposure can interfere with the quality of our sleep. Caffeine, recognized for its ability to boost alertness and focus, competes with sleep by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain, a molecule that accumulates throughout the day, making us feel tired. Caffeine’s effects can linger for eight to ten hours, so it’s crucial to limit consumption at least eight hours before bedtime. Even for those that can fall asleep after having caffeine, research suggests it still significantly impacts the quality and depth of sleep that can be achieved. Alcohol, on the other hand, may promote relaxation and make falling

asleep easier, but it disrupts our REM cycle, causing us to wake up more frequently, often without consciously realizing it. Similarly, exposure to blue light at night interferes with our circadian rhythm, impacting our sleep patterns. To counter these disturbances, it’s best to reduce exposure to bright overhead lights and screens one to two hours before bedtime. One final strategy to further enhance the quality of sleep consider preparing for bedtime 30-60 minutes in advance. Engaging in activities like stretching, meditation, reading, or writing can help relax the mind, decrease the time it takes to fall asleep, and ultimately improve the overall sleep experience. In fact, writing a to-do list before bedtime has been demonstrated to hasten sleep onset by reducing rumination and worry. Ultimately, sleep is a fundamental pillar of health and vitality. Its significance reaches beyond merely feeling rested; it influences our overall well-being. Prioritizing sleep by adopting these practical strategies, such as regulating our circadian rhythms, managing room temperature, and minimizing caffeine, alcohol, and screen exposure, can significantly enhance our quality of life. In our fast-paced world, recognizing the importance of restful sleep empowers us to live healthier and more fulfilling lives. Sleep is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for a balanced and vibrant life. Netzach Yisroel Loh Yeshaker By Peri Neumann

It’s hard to believe that a month has passed since the horrific events of October 7th. Despite the unspeakable tragedy, I think I’m not alone when I say that I’ve never been more resolute, more tuned into, more proud to be a Jew. Here’s something the nations of the world can’t seem to learn: We. Can. Not. Be. Destroyed. They can murder us, but they can’t ever kill us. They can violate us, but they can’t ever make us impure. They can gut us, but they can’t ever remove our neshama. They can behead us, but they can’t ever sever our Jewish pride. They can burn us, but they can’t ever extinguish our pintale Yid. They can stab our unborn babies, but they can’t ever prevent our rebirth. They can kidnap us, but they can’t ever ungroup us. They can try again and again, and gosh, they have tried. And again and again they will fail.

This time, though, they failed differently. During the Inquisition, they forced us to bury our Jewish identity. So we couldn’t identify one Jew to another. And they thought they won. But we came back. During the pogroms, we were too busy fleeing bloodshed to gather together. So we remained separate. And they thought they won. But we came back. During the Holocaust, our morale was shot, and we didn’t have the emotional energy to unite. So we each went our own ways, trying to survive. And they thought they won. But we came back. During the Intafadas, we avoided congregating. So we remained each man for himself. And they thought they won. But we came back. And then there’s now. Now, when they breached our fences and assaulted our women and

dismembered our babies and stole our children and shot our men and kidnapped our soldiers - now? Now, we have never been so united since Matan Torah. Now, our very differences are what’s uniting us. You don’t wear tzitzis? I have a car full of begadim knotted by strangers. You don’t light Shabbos candles? Here’s two tea lights and an Instagram post with the words and their pronunciations. You haven’t worn teffillin since your Bar Mitzvah? I have a pair for you donated by family across the globe. You don’t keep Shabbos? How about observing one hour for all the soldiers in the field who can’t? As then, is now. K’ish echad b’lev echad. One nation, brought together by the greatest of tragedies, united in our efforts to fight hate with love and evil with goodness. The media lies, but history doesn’t. ‫נצח ישראל לא ישקר‬

BUSINESS

Business with Chocolate By Shalom Markman

My phone buzzed with a message way too early one morning last week. Once it starts, it usually doesn’t stop. We all know the feeling. Especially if you’re in business, or a Rabbi of a congregation. This message, however, was a bit different than the rest I get from clients. It was a delightfulI message: “Just gave your name to a potential client and highly recommended your services. He said he will be calling.” So, what’s the big deal? Isn’t that supposed to happen? Receiving referrals from customers that we properly service? In a perfect world, maybe. But how can we better capitalize on it? You must keep yourself relevant. But how? I’m already bending myself backwards for this client. The answer lies in a one-word recipe. Although it can change for each customer, it’s a universal concept and referred to in western culture as relationships. According to the Oxford dictionary, a relationship is defined as “the way in P 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E . C O M

which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected.” While it’s a vague definition, it has powerful ramifications. A relationship means a connection. The reason why your customer walked in your door or got in touch with you, is because of something tangible. Maybe it was your product, or maybe it was your service. It might have even been your accent. Maybe a bit of each. The knowledge of what got them in the door will hint at their expectations from you. A few days prior to my early morning buzz, I was traveling in New York and decided to stop over to that customer and say hello in person. They are a prominent dentist office. Because you can’t walk into a customer without a thank you gift, I hit up the local kosher shop and put together an array of chocolates. A perfect companion for any sweet tooth. The office was a busy one, and my only intention was to drop off

this box of chocolates with the front desk. I was spotted, however, by the dentist himself, so we hugged it out like old palls. It was actually the first time meeting this client in person. Go figure. But he felt comfortable with me. They were being taken care of and were appreciative of that. But why didn’t they refer until now? I had actively made myself relevant. Being relevant with a customer means actively building on your relationship. If you’re a steakhouse owner, it means throwing in desert for a party of ten. You must put in, to get out! You’re investing in people. Don’t forget. Not always will you see the direct results. When you’re in the habit of staying relevant, your phone will get in the habit of that delightful early morning buzz, too. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. He currently lives in Norfolk VA with his family and visits Florida when he gets hungry or brings on a new client. You can find him on LinkedIn.

Tackling Debt and Preparing for Economic Challenges By Shmuel Shayowitz

Joe Smith replaced all the windows in his house. He had top-of-theline, double-insulated, energy-efficient windows installed. A few weeks later, Joe received a bill from the company, which he immediately threw in the trash. Sixty days later, another invoice arrived, which he promptly tossed. At the six-month mark, a letter with a red insert stamped “past due” came, only to be thrown away instantly. Joe started to get calls every thirty days for the next few months, which he ignored each time. One day, his phone rang, and Joe saw the contractor’s name on his Caller ID - this time, he picked up. The voice on the other end started to scream and curse at Joe. “Mr. Smith, the work has been completed over a year now, and we still haven’t been paid!” Joe calmly replied, “Now, don’t try to pull a fast one on me. The salesman who sold me those windows explicitly told me that they would pay for themselves in one year!!” If only paying bills were that simple. Experts across the globe are sounding the alarm and advising consumers about an upcoming (or already here, in my opinion) recession. The most common piece of advice that I have seen is to “start saving” and “have a reserve.” For many, that’s easier said than done. A recent Harris Poll and Personal Capital report shows that almost 60% of Americans would not last two months without a paycheck should employment conditions deteriorate and job cuts accelerate. Unfortunately, I anticipate that to be likely as The Federal Reserve already indicated that their monetary policy would persist despite the damaging impacts on employment and housing. P 3 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

Unfortunately, the massive surge in credit card debt shows that many Americans are running out of money a lot sooner than expected. In its quarterly report, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said overall debt levels increased by 1.3% during the third quarter of 2023 to $17.29 trillion. Credit card borrowing levels rose by 4.7% to $1.08 trillion, the largest since the New York Fed began tracking such data in 1999. The average amount of total debt owed by U.S. households rose to $145,319. It’s time for everyone to start taking their personal financial situation more seriously. I have been helping many clients with a few simple techniques I would like to share here. Start by making a list of all your debts and reoccurring bills, so you know exactly where you stand. Don’t forget to include even the one-time bills such as summer camps or vacation spending. Next, create a monthly budget that tracks your income and expenses. For those needing assistance, I can provide a complimentary spreadsheet with all the typical expenses already mapped out. It’s important to reduce unnecessary spending by identifying and lowering expenses you can live without. You would be surprised at some of the small miscellaneous reoccurring expenses that

could easily be eliminated and won’t be missed much. For the remaining expenses, focus on paying off highinterest debts first. These are the ones that cost you the most in the long run. Reach out to your creditors and see if you can negotiate lower interest rates or better repayment terms. It’s also advisable to consider consolidating your debts or refinancing loans to lower your monthly payments. Finally, look for ways to increase your income, like taking on part-time work or selling things you no longer need. Reducing debt takes time, so stay patient and stay committed to your financial goals. Celebrate small victories along the way to keep yourself motivated. By following these steps, you can regain control of your financial situation and build resilience in uncertain times. Most importantly, consider seeking advice from financial experts who can help you create a sustainable financial plan that best suits your personal situation and circumstances.
