FRESH FLORIDA FARMS

Fresh Florida Farms is an innovative indoor, vertical, hydroponic farm located in South Florida. “At the farm, we are able to produce high-quality lettuce, herbs, and microgreens in a controlled environment.” Jonathan Rubin opened his farm in 2020 following winning a grant from the School of International & Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University, where he received his Master’s in Public Administration focusing on Environmental Science & Policy. “I’ve always been fascinated by food quality, production, and the fragility of the food supply chain,” says Jonathan. Since 2020, Rubin has developed his farm to service food distributors, supermarkets, restaurants, and food banks throughout the region. Obtaining ORB Kosher certification, which certifies that the produce is grown in a bug-free environment, has helped the business flourish in the Kosher world.

Rubin shared, “The agriculture industry operates like a large community. Growers work closely with supermarkets, policymakers, and seed companies globally. Corporations share information creating top-quality products while protecting crops from diseases. Working closely with researchers and experts from the USDA, national supermarket chains and distributors, and the University of Florida has exposed me to the depth of the industry. Farmers in Florida, share research and logistical support with farmers in California, Europe, and Israel.”

“We are excited about a new project where we will be building vertical farms in schools. My goal is to educate youth on the wonders of agriculture and the sensitivities of our food supply chain. Younger students will be responsible for managing and taking care of the system. Older students will be able to use chemistry and biology to improve plant health and expedite growth times. A small 16ft SQFT system is able to produce over 300 plants at one time.”

To open a vertical farm in your school, or for more information please email Jonathan Rubin at JRubin@FreshFloridaFarms.com

AN INTERVIEW WITH YOSSI BAYLES

We had the chance to sit down with Yossi Bayles, talented musician, and chat about his career making musical magic. Here is what he had to say about his music, his journey, and his inspiration.

Question: What inspired you to pursue a career in Music?

Answer: Music is everything to me and it has always been this way. I did not even realize I was pursuing a career in music because it has always been my passion and what gets me going. The emotional impact that music can have on people’s lives is inspiring, and I wanted to be a part of that. Through music, I can express myself and connect with others on a deeper level.

Question: How has your Jewish heritage influenced your music?

Answer: I never really questioned myself about that, but it is obvious for me that it might be the reason all my songs are inspired by G’mara, Midrash and P’sukim... Growing up in Bnei

Brak, Israel and in a Frum Family, I guess it came naturally.

Question: Oh, you grew up in Bnei Brak, what can you tell us about that?

Answer: Yes, born in bnei brak and studied in Tashbar which was built on the top of the Chazon Ish’s house. It is quite impressive to see it today. These structures are miracles by themselves. Then I went to the Brisk Yeshiva of Rav Elyokim Schlesinger of London. At a young age, I started to compose music for an Europeen TV documentary channel called, Arte. based in Strasbourg, France. My career has brought me to Florida, where I live now with my wife and kids

Question: What is your favorite piece of Music you have composed?

Answer: The one that is not public (laughing).

Q. How has your Music evolved over the years?

A. Hum, I would say that it is becoming simpler, more soul music as I age.

Q. What advice would you give to inspiring Jewish musician?

A. We don’t choose to be musicians, we are musicians...we breathe and imagine music 24/7. It is hard to be something else...be true to yourself and don’t be scared to share the gift Hashem gave you, be that voice for others that can’t.

Q. What has been the most rewarding experience of your career?

A. I am still waiting for the most rewarding one... but I guess the reaction of the public, when the message is passing through the only way I know to communicate... Some testimonies of people telling me how it affects them personally.

Q. What do you think sets Jewish Music apart from other genres?

A. For me Jewish music has to talk to the soul, it has to elevate the one that sings and the one that listens even if we don’t understand the words. Certain genres do the opposite Hashem yerachem.

Q. Why did you decide to finally release your original songs?

A. As a perfectionist it holds me back... When Covid started people were deeply depressed. I wanted to do something...I started a kumzits movement in Hollywood, people showed up to my backyard, we were playing guitar and singing together. It brought so much joy and recomfort in

people’s souls...the kumzits became so popular that sometimes it exceeded 150 people... new friendships started, and this is where I let go of my original compositions. I didn’t have anything to lose. It was such a Nahat to see people singing my songs and spreading joy ... Actually, a new song is coming up this week, it is called Aderabe...It came up live, through Kumzits friendship I’ve developed with Ari Fraser, an amazing composer and singer. We had a lot of fun working on this project. Aryeh is an amazing guy, a true friend and we hope that our message will be welcomed so we can share more songs to this world.

Q. What do you think is the most important element of a successful musical performance?

A. In my view, the most crucial element of a successful musical performance is the ability to connect with the audience emotionally. A musician who can express themselves authentically and read the audience’s energy can create a dynamic and engaging experience that resonates with the audience. Additionally, a sense of flow and

cohesion in the performance, through careful selection of the setlist and smooth transitions between songs, can keep the audience engaged throughout the performance. Technical proficiency, stage presence, and audience interaction are also important, but connecting with the audience and creating a sense of flow are the key ingredients for a truly successful musical performance.

Q. I Heard that you had a very successful band in Miami called YBO orchestra. Why did you stop performing for weddings?

A. YBO was one of the first orchestras to perform with 15 musicians on stage, we were like fire. Now that generation is marrying their kids and the new generation has different music needs. We did not stop, I am working on crazy electronic arrangements that can serve the needs of this new generation, more upbeats while keeping the tradition alive. So, to answer your questions, I didn’t stop. I am reinventing myself and almost ready to come back stronger than ever.

FALLS – NOT AN INEVITABLE PART OF AGING

Each year in the United States, as per the CDC. about one in four adults (28%) age 65 and older, report falling. According to the National Council on Aging, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall every 11 seconds. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries in this population.

The consequences of falls can be severe and long-lasting, leading to injuries that impact mobility, quality of life, and independence.

Understanding the different reasons for falls is essential.

Impaired balance and gait:

Age-related changes in the body such as muscle weakness and decreased flexibility can make it harder to maintain balance and prevent falls.

Medications:

Certain medications cause dizziness, disorientation, or impaired coordination and significantly increase a person’s risk of falling.

Environmental Factors: Cluttered living spaces, uneven floors, poorly lit areas, loose carpets, wet floors, and lack of handrails on stairs or in bathrooms can contribute to falls.

Vision Impairment: Impaired vision can make it difficult to see obstacles and avoid potential hazards.

Medical Conditions:

Certain conditions such as dehydration, cognitive impairment, arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pain and stroke, can increase an individual’s risk of falling.

Prevention:

To prevent falls, healthcare providers need to identify and address these risk factors and work with patients on developing strategies to prevent falls. Simple interventions like exercise, fall prevention programs, eye exams, and home modifications can effectively reduce the risk of falls among older adults.

The most suited medical specialist to visit for a comprehensive fall assessment is a Physiatrist, that is, an MD or DO, who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physiatrists are specially trained to identify medical risk factors for falls and create an optimal treatment plan for those who have fallen.

Remember, falls are not an inevitable part of aging.

CELEBRATING SHAVOUT WITH WHAT WE LOVE: CHEESECAKE

Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. It is a time of joy and celebration, and one of the best ways to celebrate it is with Cheesecake, that delicious dessert that is enjoyed by many, making it a perfect way to celebrate the holiday.

Cheesecake is a rich and creamy dessert that is made with cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and other ingredients. It can be served plain or topped with fresh fruit, nuts, or other toppings. It is a great way to end the Yom Tov meal or to enjoy it as a snack.

This sweet treat is sure to please everyone. It is also a great way to honor the giving of the Torah. Cheesecake is a reminder of the sweetness of the Torah and the joy of the holiday.

When making cheesecake for Shavuot, it is important to use the freshest ingredients. Fresh cream cheese, eggs, and other ingredients will make the cheesecake taste even better. For most of us who don’t have time to make our own cheesecakes, there are wonderful bakeries and restaurants ready to fill orders.

So, where’s the best place to order a delicious cheesecake in time to celebrate?

Finding the perfect kosher cheesecake to delight your guests at your Yom Tov is not as challenging as you may think. Below are my favorites:

Rustiko Artisan Bistro (KM) located in Surfside bakes a Classic Style cheesecake as well as specialty cheesecakes including:

• Oreo Cheesecake

• Dulde De Leche Cheesecake

• Nutella Cheesecake

Rustico is also offering catering trays. Enjoy Shavout by indulging in the gourmet dairy dishes that you love from the restaurant.

Moran Patisserie (ORB) located in Fort Lauderdale bakes a variety of Cheesecakes to choose from. In addition to their array of cheesecakes they offer unique Cheesecake Jars:

• Milk Chocolate Cheesecake Jar

• Dulce De Leche Cheesecake Jar

• Mixed Berry Cheesecake Jar

Hakedel 1 (KM) in Miami bakes an Israeli Style Cheesecake

For those not able to eat dairy and need a pareve choice, New Time Catering

THE AMAZING JOURNEY OF L’CHAIM OG AKA ZECHARIAH YISHAI DOVID

OLUWABANKOLE LEVINE

retinoblastoma cancer at 16 months old and I almost died. My parents opted to not give me chemo or radiation and instead I had surgery to remove my eye. That was when I became a survivor. I defied all odds.

raised had a lot of Jewish influences.

Q What influences in your life contributed to you becoming a musician, specifically a rap artist?

L’Chaim OG is a Jewish rapper, with songs such as What’s the Hecksher, Ani Po 2.0 (feat. Nissim Black), Esches Chayil, and the many other songs he has produced. He is an inspiration to many, with his drive and passion for what he does, and his journey through Judaism.

He was born Zachariah Ysaye Oluwabankole Babington-Johnson before finding his way into a Synagogue which began his journey to being Torah observant. Several years later he found himself standing in front of the Milwaukee Beis Din about to finalize his conversion to Judaism.

He discussed his journey with us, not only as Yeshiva student, but also as an ultra-orthodox rapper. He says the music he creates comes from his own personal experiences through his lyrics, so that people could find their path back home to Hashem.

Q Tell me about your background and more about yourself.

A I would like to start by saying I am a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with

The doctor said I should avoid things like football, and I ended up playing football. I received a football scholarship to college and had a chance to play professionally. I played college football taking things head – on and giving the situation more than what it asked for.

As a child I sought truth and ways to make sense of the world. This led me to question what the truth was religiously. It led me down a path talking to Gd hoping to hear back from Him. And one day He spoke to me. I then found myself at a Shul on Erev Shabbat. Although I felt welcomed, I had no clue what was going on around me. The experience was interesting. And then I found the “blue book” (Chumash). That was the game changer. I fell in love.

Soon after, I discovered the Siddur and the prayers in Shmoneh Esrai. The prayers touched my heart and spoke my language.

Q What inspired you about Judaism?

A I was surrounded by Judaism while growing up. My mother wore a Chai necklace most of the time. My Aunt converted to Judaism. Friends, family, and the community in which I was

Most of my past interviews mention how I grew up in the shadow of Minneapolis musical legends including my mother’s cousin, Prince. However, my main influence that contributed to my musical career was my mother. Being an Educator, we had encyclopedias around the house, any chore that I did my mother made a lesson to go along with it. The level of information I was able to obtain game me more to draw from lyrically.

From an early age, I played drums and cello, later joining the Twin City Orchestra. I was always talking a lot and eventually started rapping. I went into the studio at age 13 and after that, people knew me as the best freestyler in the state. Say any word and I can make it rhyme on the spot.

Q Has being religious impacted your music?

A There is no such thing as a Jewish entertainer. This is a lifestyle. Torah is over everything. I believe that Torah

P32 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM

is the most “gangster” thing there is. Torah is the basis of all. Everything is in life is taken from the roots of Torah. I see my music as bringing Torah values to a wider audience. You see the impact that music has culturally, even glorifying violence. Why can’t I take this same fervor and style to make Torah cool? Why can’t I perform for Hashem? There is nothing purer than Torah. It’s the infinite highway. Why is being righteous not the coolest thing in the world?

Q Have you faced any challenges in your journey to being Torah observant?

A Not being able to go as fast as I would like to in terms of learning. Commentaries and wisdom are all in ivrit and although I am getting better in translating, it is still challenging. I have moments of love that are motivating yet they are also frustrating.

Q How has your Jewish faith helped you to stay grounded in the rap industry?

A The content of Torah has helped shape my songs and helped me form the words. I use concepts of the Torah, its wisdom, to motivate people and to make things relevant to them.

My debut album, What’s the Hechsher? is kind of telling my journey, but also just introducing the spiritual concepts and things that I came across. The album’s name, in part reflects the attitude and questioning that Jews of color often face: if they converted, how they converted, where they are from. People often wonder “what’s the hechsher [kosher certification] on that guy?” I thought it was a way of addressing that openly.

Q I know you lived in Israel for a while and attended Yeshiva. What was that like?

A It was wonderful. I attended Ohr Somayach and met Amar’e Stoudemire

who became my chavruta. We had an automatic friendship from our love of Torah and our athletic backgrounds. We challenged each other and helped each other grow. To this day we are learning together and encouraging each other to continue growing. That’s what chavrutas do – grow together.

Q What made you come to South Florida?

I was given an opportunity with L’Chaim Meats. I help spread glatt kosher meat, bison, lamb and beef to the kosher world. It is similar to what I do with my music. I am sharing the Torah and its values.

Q What is your message for others who are on the path of becoming observant?

A Don’t allow yourself to be defined by your Yetzer Hara. And know your truth. Torah is truth. Know the truth even when it is not convenient. I hope to appeal to those finding their way to Judaism. This isn’t entertainment. It’s not a costume. It’s all connecting to God. Many people are lost, like spiritual free agents. My main point is to encourage other Jews on their journey toward Torah.

While he acknowledges that he has experienced some prejudice, bias, and ignorance when it comes to his experiences, L’chaim Og said that he tries to focus on the positive interactions he has had: “I’ve experienced a lot of love and welcoming and support and encouragement, and someone just looking at me funny is not going to hurt my feelings.”

Speaking with L’chaim OG it is very evident as to why he is an inspiration. He says that “Judaism is a nice, fancy word, but it’s really just about trying to be a better person, being more accountable, better Middot, better qualities.” Spoken as a true mensch.

CREATE A SPRING TABLESCAPE

Tables can be filled with love. For me, table decor is my love language and creative outlet. It is a reflection of my love for the people I gather together in my home. When decorating your table for Shavuot, Shabbat, special occasion or every day, don’t be afraid to be creative and think out of the box.

Get inspired by the holiday, something of significance, or someone.

I am heavily inspired by my favorite poets and writers, as well as the occasion I am celebrating. I bring elements of each holiday into my tablescape. You will be surprised how simple creating your very own, unique tablescape can be!
