ALPER JCC MIAMI HOSTS MELISSA RIVERS: LIES MY MOTHER TOLD ME

On Sunday, November 6, the Alper JCC Miami hosted award-winning T.V. personality, producer and New York Times best-selling author, Melissa Rivers.  The event was the latest in the 42nd Annual Alper JCC Miami Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival.

At the event, which drew a crowd of 200-plus people, Rivers talked about her latest novel, Lies My Mother Told Me, answered questions from the crowd and autographed her novel.  The 42nd Annual Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival offers a variety of speakers and topics from mysteries to memoirs and runs through April 2023.

The conversation was facilitated by Lee Schrager, founder of the South Beach Food and Wine Festival.

Events like these serve to strengthen the Jewish and broader community of South Miami-Dade and promote Jewish values, ethics, and traditions that meet the needs of an inclusive environment.

“Melissa was so authentic and candid,” said Elaine Katz, Book Festival co-chair at Alper JCC Miami. “She loved having the ‘interviewer’ format!! Shrager was beyond amazing, too. Just a great afternoon. A perfect 10!!!”

In addition to the Jewish Book Festival, the Adult Programs Department plans a multitude of events and programs throughout the year that are educational, cultural, entertaining, stimulating, and just plain fun.

CHAI LIFELINE SOUTHEAST CHANUKAH

TOY DRIVE SPREADS JOY

Chai Lifeline Southeast is gearing up for Chanukah with the start of its annual Toy Drive and Chanukah Angels program. More than 50,000 gifts are distributed to sick children and their families every year.

Both the Chanukah Toy Drive and Chanukah Angel program aim to deliver toys directly to families and children during the holiday season. The Chanukah Angel program matches local community members with specific Chai Lifeline families and their holiday wish lists while the broader Toy Drive encourages the community to donate any new toys to help bring joy to children who need them most.

The Chanukah Angel program has proved to be a real hit with donors and recipients alike.

One Chanukah Angel remarked how “This allows me to give joy directly to a child. What

an amazing, fulfilling feeling! Every aspect of the Chanukah Angels program brought me and my family so much happiness. From choosing the gift to delivering it and seeing the child’s glowing smile; we can’t wait to participate again this year.”

“Whenever a child gets sick, a family’s finances are immediately impacted,” said Chai Lifeline Southeast Director Esther Leah Sandhaus. “This leaves little room for luxuries like gifts. Chai Lifeline steps in, granting each child’s wish for a special present and making the holidays truly joyful.”

Chai Lifeline is a leading international children’s health support network, providing critical support to children with life-threatening and lifelong illnesses and their families.

To learn more, make a donation, or get involved, visit www.chailifeline.com/southeast  or call 305-956-9990.

LET’S GO BEHIND THE SCENES WITH JEWISH RADIO SHOW, SHALOM

SOUTH FLORIDA

Doing anything for 36 years defies many odds and demonstrates uncanny staying power. Little did Jewish radio show host, Roni, think he would be making South Florida history when he started in the radio industry over threeand-a-half decades ago.

Growing up in Jerusalem, Roni would pretend he was broadcasting on the radio with an “On the Air” sign on his bedroom door and doing mock playby-play basketball calls with the TV volume turned down during Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball games. He would be the go-to guy in Bar Ilan University, where he received his bachelor’s degree, for music and deejaying. While studying at Bar Ilan, he got his big break in radio when a friend in Florida said he was starting a Jewish radio show and offered Roni a job.

Roni returned to South Florida and entered the radio industry by selling radio ads, writing them and then getting behind the mic to voice the ads and host the radio show with his friend. When he branched out to start a Jewish radio show of his own, he borrowed $150 from his mother to print flyers and business cards and hit the pavement convincing local businesses to support his show.

Now, 36 years later, Roni hosts popular Jewish radio show, Shalom South Florida every Sunday morning on WWNN. What is the secret for the longevity of Shalom South Florida? Roni breaks it down to three reasons:

His listeners – Obviously, he wouldn’t be on the air if no one was listening. The show boasts a listening audience

estimated at around 40,000. Listeners are so loyal to the show and its sponsors that they usually tune in for the entirety of the program, including the ads. “I try to make the show extremely timely, relevant and fresh. And I never take my audience for granted,” says Roni. He stays on top of the latest in Jewish music from Israel, the U.S. and around the world, and makes sure to sprinkle his radio playlist with classics that allow his listeners to reminisce and say “Wow, I haven’t heard that song in so long!” Many ex-Floridians tune in to the show across North America, Israel and the world, and some check in periodically to let Roni know they are still listening.

The show’s sponsors – Roni attributes much of Shalom South Florida’s longevity to businesses that believe in the power of radio and have seen direct results from their ad campaigns on his program. His show is supported by Israeli companies like Tnuva and Nefesh B’Nefesh, national advertisers like Kedem/Herzog wines and Meal Mart, and local advertisers like Publix Supermarkets and NMB candy store Wall to Wall Nuts. Shalom South Florida promotes shows and concerts for virtually every theater and venue in the tri-county area, and Jewish concerts for many schools and JCCs. Most of the show’s sponsors have been with the show between 10 and 30 years!

Passion – Roni loves music. Over the years, he has amassed a huge music collection and enjoys sharing it with anyone who will listen. Jewish music in particular is fun for him because there are so many genres: Israeli, Chassidic, Yiddish, nigguns and Klezmer, and

within each category a multitude of subcategories. “To do this every Sunday for over 36 years, you really gotta love what you’re doing. I try to pick the best possible mix of songs each Sunday, and before holidays or on special occasions, I do my best to get the listeners in the mood through music and song.”

His favorite moments on the air? Hearing from younger listeners that they are enjoying listening to Jewish music, and calls and emails from older listeners who are moved to tears by some of the songs featured on the show.

The hardest parts of the doing the show? Keeping the quality to our listeners’ standards week after week, sorting through all of his Jewish music to distill it down to 90 minutes, and ensuring enough sponsors to keep the show going during the summer.

Message to non-yet listeners? Try out the show. Tune in a few Sundays. “I know you’ll enjoy the show and hopefully become a regular listener. You might even win a valuable prize in one of our on-air contests.”

Shalom South Florida can be heard every Sunday morning, 9:30a-11:00a on WWNN.

1470AM; 95.3FH & 96.9FM; on most radio apps; online live and as a podcast on www.ShalomSouthFlorida.com

SCRUMPTIOUS CHANUKAH RECIPES TO LIGHT UP YOUR PALATE

HIDDEN VEGGIE LATKES

Recipe courtesy of PJ Library

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 large russet potato, peeled

• 1 large zucchini, peeled

• ½ head of cauliflower

DIRECTIONS:

• ½ yellow onion

• 1 clove of garlic, finely minced

• ½ cup all-purpose flour

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• 2 large eggs

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt

• ½ teaspoon pepper

• Vegetable oil for frying

1. Grate together potato, zucchini, cauliflower and onion. Use a food processor to make this step faster.

2. Wrap the vegetable mixture in a cheesecloth or a lightweight kitchen towel and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

3. In a large bowl, combine vegetables with garlic, flour, baking powder, eggs, salt and pepper.

4. In a frying pan heat ½ inch of oil on medium-high. Carefully drop a heaping tablespoon of latke mixture into oil.

5. Fry for roughly 2 minutes, then flip and fry the other side.

6. Transfer each latke to a paper towel-lined platter.

Serve while warm.

BAKED ‘SUFGANIYOT’ JELLY DONUTS

The average Chanukah sufganiya (jelly donut) has between 300 and 400 calories of nearly pure oil and fat. In honor of the miracle God bestowed on the Maccabees, making oil meant for just a day last eight days, the delicious donut and other traditionally oily Chanukah foods become annual killers for your diet. For those who are health conscious but do not want to be deprived of the annual treat, here’s a healthier recipe selected from Joyofkosher.com. Consider substituting or reducing ingredients further as needed for your diet.

These baked donuts taste more like cake since they are not fried, but they are still very tasty!

P28 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 (¼-ounce) package rapid rise dry yeast

• 1 tablespoon sugar

• ¼ cup warm water

• 1 egg yolk

• 1 egg

• ¼ cup sugar

• 1 cup 1% milk, warmed

• 3½ cups all-purpose flour

• Pinch of salt

• 3 tablespoons margarine or butter, cut into 9 pieces

• Cooking spray

• ¾-1 cup strawberry jam

• Confectioners’ sugar for dusting

DIRECTIONS:

1. Dissolve the yeast with the 1 tablespoon of the sugar in ¼ cup warm water.

2. In a standing mixer with a paddle, beat egg yolk, egg, yeast mixture, ¼ cup of sugar, and milk.

3. With paddle going, add flour and salt.

4. Add margarine one piece at a time. Dough should be sticky but elastic.

5. Turn out dough onto floured surface. Knead once or twice. Shape into ball. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and place in a warm area for at least an hour or until dough is doubled.

6. Lightly grease two baking sheets.

7. Divide dough in half. With lightly oiled hands, take approximately 2 tablespoons of dough and roll into ball. Place on greased baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough placing balls 2 inches apart (about 12 balls per baking sheet). Cover with a kitchen or tea towel and let rise 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake at 375°F for 10–12 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven and let cool.

8. Place jam in a pastry bag fitted with a medium pastry tip or use a small ziplock type of bag fitted with a medium pastry tip. Pastry tips are available at most craft stores. Press tip into donut and squeeze at least 1 teaspoon of jam into donut, or more if desired.

9. Dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve.

TIP: If you don’t have a standing mixer, use a hand mixer for Step 2 and beat the egg yolk, egg, yeast mixture, sugar, and milk for about 1 minute. Knead the rest of the ingredients together by hand: first the flour, then the salt and margarine, one piece at a time, then proceed with Step 5.

YESHIVA MIDDLE SCHOOL

In the two years plus that Yeshiva Middle School has been in existence, its growth has exceeded all expectations, growing to well over 100 bochurim (students). Under the direction of Rabbi Yosef Zemel, the Rebbeim and teachers of YMS bring many years of combined experience to provide a robust and exciting program of learning and study to the students. Despite the growth in size, there is a deliberate and concentrated focus on the development of the individual student, grooming each bochur to strive to reach his potential. Classes offer plenty of opportunity for hands-on involvement by the student: boys in partners reviewing the gemara, acting out different Talmudic scenarios to fully understand a legal case under discussion, science experiments and dissections, building prototype type structures

MECHINA OF SOUTH FLORIDA

to test rules of engineering. YMS also boasts a strong and varied set of auxiliary staff to support accelerated learning, provide alternative learning, and to contribute to the mental health of students. Continuing under the theme that the focus of the school is on the students, students are the ones who lead the prayer services, Torah reading and all of the other functions of the Beis Midrash (study hall); student council is active and liaises with the administration; the YMS voice features divrei Torah and articles exclusively submitted by students. It is the goal of Yeshiva Middle School that students who graduate will be advanced in Gemara and Judaic subjects, will have a solid background in General Studies, will be exemplary in middos (interpersonal relationships) and have a passion for Torah and Mitzvos.

The Mechina of South Florida offers a first-rate Yeshiva education. It provides a rigorous and intensive limudei kodesh program on par with the elite Yeshivos of the Northeast. The daily program has a dual focus of in depth learning and covering large amounts of material. There is also a strong emphasis on skills development. The boys are privy to an education that focuses on their specific learning needs and enhances their personal growth thanks to a high teacher-to-student ratio. The Mechina also features a top-notch general studies program that incorporates cutting-edge educational programming to enable each student to realize their potential.

The Mechina operates in conjunction with the Yeshiva and Kollel Beis Moshe Chaim. This connection allows the bochurim to learn with Beis Midrash bochurim and Kollel yungerleit in the atmosphere of a genuine makom Torah. For more information please visit www.mechinasf.com

YOTZER OHR MIAMI

Yotzer Ohr was founded in 2016, with a small group of girls eagerly searching for MORE! Looking back, we never even imagined where we would be today.

Our motto is that every girl is equipped with a specific spectrum of G-d given talents with which to maximize and fulfill her mission in this world.

We strive to develop and enhance those gifts.

Yotzer Ohr runs on a system of mutual respect, for teachers, administration, and students. With a focus on Ahavas Yisrael, Achdus, Good Middos, a warm and caring environment full of creativity and multi-faceted approaches to education, we ignite a spark in each girl to love Hashem and Torah as well as an awareness and understanding of their own diverse capabilities.

Every human being has infinite potential. Our mission is that each girl realizes those possibilities, while developing a relationship with Hashem, themselves and each other. With this belief and in a truly loving environment, it makes sense that growth happens organically.

Our teachers and staff are passionate about their work and treat each girl as an individual. They are more than teachers. They are role models, examples of fine human beings. Mentors. They believe in our mission and are quite literally a gift from Hashem to our students. As a team, we believe

in every girl, and because we believe in them, they learn to believe in themselves.

As a religious girls Torah and Art school, we offer a full academic curriculum, including Judaic and Secular subjects as well as professional dance classes, film and writing electives, and a professional art studio and instructor. We pride ourselves in giving girls opportunities to shine beyond the classroom. With smaller classes, individualized learning, hand selected teachers, and an environment where every student truly matters; our girls spend their teenage years not just surviving, but thriving!

With a strong foundation of Torah and a Rabbinical guidance, Yotzer Ohr girls graduate with a deep and meaningful understanding of how to effectively run a Jewish home. In addition, they feel pride in themselves and have a world of creative and educational options available.

Seeing Hashem orchestrate our every day, inspires us to work harder, do more. With Hashems help and our daily effort and love, the sky is the limit for what our school family can achieve.

YESHIVA TORAS CHAIM TORAS EMES

Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes is one of the fastest growing Yeshivos in South Florida. What makes YTCTE so unique?

Located in the vibrant Torah community of North Miami Beach, Florida, YTCTE is a Yeshiva that is known, not only for its high level learning, but also for its ruach and warmth. YTCTE is also a Yeshiva that focuses on the success of each student. YTCTE currently serves students in Junior Pre-K through Bais Medrash (ages 3 through post high school). This includes our Esformes Early Childhood Center, Klurman Elementary School with separate boys and girls divisions, Rohr Middle School for boys, Dr. Abe Chames High School for boys, and Bais Medrash Zichron Ezra. Are you looking for a school big enough to provide all the services and amenities that schools up north have, yet still retains its out-of-town feel where no student gets lost in the shuffle? You will find exactly what you are looking for at YTCTE.

With over 1,300 students and a talented and dedicated faculty and staff, YTCTE is that out-of-town Yeshiva that parents are looking for right in the heart of South Florida. Bussing is currently available from the Miami Beach, Surfside/Bal Harbour, North Miami Beach, Aventura, and Hollywood communities.

At YTCTE, students receive the highest level of chinuch in Limudei Kodesh, taught in conjunction with a rigorous Secular Studies program. Beyond the academics, there is a strong focus on middos in YTCTE. Children learn how to be a “mentsch” and an upstanding, caring, contributing member of Klal Yisroel and society at large. We focus on building strong minds and strong character, so our talmidim and talmidos become caring, well-rounded and successful individuals, defined by their yiras shamayim, middos tovos and chesed. YTCTE educates the whole child: Torah, middos, minds and more. This all happens in a warm, welcoming learning environment where lessons are tailored to each student’s unique learning style and needs.

As students move through our Mesivta division, the talmidim know they can always turn to their Rebbe for guidance, even years after they graduate. YTCTE is also proud of its high school general studies program that prepares students to successfully pursue an advanced education. With three leveled classes in every subject, including many AP courses, YTCTE students graduate Yeshiva with a well-rounded education, fully prepared to enter the next stage of life.

As our need for additional growth has become more apparent, we are fortunate to announce our expansion project. A few months

ago, The South Florida Torah community witnessed an historic moment as over 2,000 Rabbanim, Mechanchim, teachers, parents, students and friends of the Yeshiva came together to celebrate the first concrete steps of our South Campus Expansion at our Groundbreaking Event.

The physical capacity of our current campus has been stretched to its limits and plans were developed to build a new 80,000 square foot educational center and auditorium/sports complex. We look forward to filling our spacious new building with smiling children, and continuing in our mission to educate the next generation of Klal Yisroel.

YESHIVA TIFERES TORAH

Yeshiva Tiferes Torah of Boca Raton or “TTB” was founded in 2014 to fill the need for an all-boys Yeshiva High School in Boca Raton, Florida. Originally housed in the Young Israel of Boca Raton building, the Yeshiva quickly outgrew those premises. With tremendous siyata d’Shmaya, and under the leadership and dedication of Rabbi Yigal Abramchik, Rosh Yeshiva, TTB moved into a beautiful and state-of-the-art building in 2020, and currently has an enrollment of 115 students. Phase 2 of the construction project is currently underway, adding a larger dining room, student lounge, and additional classroom space, on track to be ready for the 2023-2024 school year. TTB’s mission of uncompromising standards for Torah education and collegepreparatory academics has developed a positive reputation in the community.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

We are proud to have a student philosophy that focuses on a deep understanding of each student, respecting and assisting with his inner growth and challenges, and recognizing his innate abilities and capabilities. A High School where a student can thrive and reach his utmost in Judaic and General education, where our students will be capable of excelling on the highest levels. Our goal is to empower and assist these young adults to develop their judgment, make sound decisions, and develop into wise, accomplished adults. This philosophy is brought to life under the careful guidance of TTB’s Rosh Yeshiva and Head of School, Rabbi Yehoshua Schloss, who is a renowned educator with over a decade of educational experience.

AN UNCOMPROMISING TORAH EDUCATION

Our mission is to develop our students into well-rounded and self-aware bnei Torah who exemplify and exhibit a genuine and profound commitment and passion for living a Torah life. Our Rabbeim place a strong emphasis on character development, focusing on fundamental mussar concepts such as derech eretz, honesty, human dignity, self-esteem, humility, and responsibility to Klal Yisroel. Students also have the opportunity to learn one-on-one with Bais Medrash bochurim each week, fostering a relationship that goes well beyond the context of their learning session.

COLLEGE PREPARATORY GENERAL STUDIES PROGRAM

The TTB administration has assembled an exemplary staff of caring, experienced, and motivated teachers who are dedicated to helping our young men achieve their academic goals. The comprehensive curriculum covers all required High School subjects, with many opportunities for higher-

level learning. TTB offers four different AP courses in addition to a highly successful Honors Math program spanning all four grades, with special attention given to preparation for PSAT and SAT exams in both English and Math.

STUDENT LIFE

The TTB High School experience is greatly enhanced by extracurricular activities and programming. The TTB Stingers basketball team, sports leagues, field trips, Shabbatons, Onegs, Rosh Chodesh Mesibas, and guest lectures are just some examples of student life at TTB. These events are designed to promote Achdus, friendship, and camaraderie amongst the students, Bais Medrash Bochurim and Rabbeim, and have proven to be a major highlight of the TTB experience.

KATZ YESHIVA HIGH SCHOOL

November 13th was an incredible day for Katz Yeshiva High School. The KYHS Open House for prospective students was a smashing success! Eighth grade students from schools across South Florida came to experience the energy and excitement of Katz Yeshiva High School.

Walking into the building, our student ambassadors welcomed guests with warm smiles and energetic spirits. Prospective students heard from Student Council President Shlomo Ganz (‘23) to give them a first hand account of “our community, our family, our home.” As parents got an in-depth look at the school, student ambassadors took the opportunity to give our future students a glimpse of everything our campus has to offer. From our 1,500 sq ft state-of-the-art Makerspace, to the Beit Midrash, from the full court gym and weight room to the Great Lawn, our campus is ready for hungry minds and future leaders.

The students and parents were then treated to a round robin array of model lessons from various teachers on a wide range of topics. Hands-on and projectbased learning was on full display as our teachers engaged with the students and parents. These lessons were just glimpses of what the KYHS classroom is like.

One of the highlights of the day was our Student Council Panel. Prospective students got to ask all of their burning questions to the student leaders of our school. It was an amazing chance for prospective students to really get a sense of what the KYHS experience is all about.

The KYHS Open House is about giving future Katz Yeshiva students a chance to experience our campus, meet our teachers and get a sense of what their future has in store for them. We hope to see all of these now familiar faces roaming our halls next year!

BOYS’ CAMPUS

Yeshiva Elementary School offers boys in grades 1-5 an opportunity to grow in learning, develop life skills, build positive Middos and create lasting relationships with Rebbeimand teachers. Teaching our students how to learn on their own, while simultaneously making learning stimulating and thought provoking, is key to fostering a lifelong desire to learn. Through intensive vocabulary training, understanding the structure of Chumash, Mishnayos and Gemara and learning b’chavrusa, our students develop the skills to grow into successful masmidim.

The General Studies Department at Yeshiva Elementary School offers a challenging academic program that not only teaches skills and content, but also teaches thinking. While our skills are aligned with Sunshine State Standards and Common Core Curriculum, our small class size allows teachers to tailor the curriculum to each child’s strengths and needs. A sequential curriculum, assessment and differentiated instruction ensure th at students graduate from Yeshiva Elementary thoroughly prepared for middle school.

ADERES GIRLS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Last year, Yeshiva Elementary School warmly welcomed a new division, Aderes Girls Middle School. Currently, with both a sixth and seventh grade, there are forty-five students that fill the majestic walls bringing talent, friendship, and leadership to a magnificent space called Aderes.

When one enters Aderes, he or she is enveloped by an indescribable warmth and palatable energy. Students can be found engaged in high level analysis as they seek to better understand Chumash and Navi with Rashi and Meforshim. Complex Math and Science concepts and skills are developed and students are exploring the relationship between historical events in the greater world and the Jewish timeline. Sophisticated texts are studied in language arts and google slide presentations are carefully crafted and designed.

The Boys School curriculum is enhanced by various academic programs and extra-curricular activities, which promote unity and school spirit and expand the knowledge of our students across the curriculum. Expos and contests offer opportunities to internalize information through a creative, hands-on approach. Boys are encouraged to participate in Motzei Shabbos Mishmar as well as davening and hasmodah programs during Yom Tov and vacations. This helps establish the importance of learning and promotes a student’s view of himself as a Ben Torah. Regular Limudei Kodesh classes for all boys on Sunday mornings serve to further solidify these goals.

The Hanhala and Rebbeim of Y.E.S. work closely with Mechina Middle and High Schools, running joint learning and Yom Tov programs throughout the school year. The Mechina also offers several extra-curricular programs during chol hamoed Succos and Pesach. Students attending these programs find themselves inspired to continue growing and learning, and excited to attend Mechina Middle School.

But the learning is only powerful and meaningful because it is given over in the context of a true Torah framework. Middos Tovos are celebrated and Yidishkeit courses through the veins of the program. The exceptional and beloved teachers know no bounds when it comes to their dedication and investment. All measures are taken to see each student better understand herself as a Bas Yisroel and a competent and successful learner. The school day is often complete with activities, fields trips, and speakers that infuse ruach and achdus in the Aderes experience.

Each day in Aderes is special and it’s only the beginning… there is so much more in store.

GIRLS’ CAMPUS EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM

Yeshiva Elementary School offers part-time and full-time programs for our youngest students of 2 years old through Kindergarten. Located in a separate wing of the Yeshiva Elementary School building, with an inviting adjacent playground, the setting is an engaging one, promoting cognitive, social-emotional, physical and spiritual development in a nurturing environment guided by and infused with Torah values. High adult-child ratios in each class allow children to establish close connections and warm, trusting relationships with their teachers. Parents are encouraged to become active participants in the educational process through the many opportunities afforded throughout the year.

Early Childhood curriculum offers a balance of child-initiated and teacher-directed experiences designed to encourage children to explore, interact and take risks that lead to intellectual, social and motor skill growth. Developmentally appropriate activities in well-defined interest centers offer purposeful play choices, such as constructive play, dramatic play, art, language and literacy, science, fine motor and math manipulatives, all of which are integrated with Judaic content. Organizing the environment so that children feel safe and supported by the consistency of classroom routines builds their confidence and enhances emotional development.

For information, please visit ww.yeshivaelementary.com or contact us at office@yeshivaelementary.com.

Yeshiva Elementary School offers girls grades 1 through 6 a rich educational program in both Limudei Kodesh and General Studies. Focused on intellectual development, building positive Middos and instilling a lifelong love of learning, the Girls School offers students a nurturing and stimulating environment in which to grow. Dedicated and experienced educators serve as outstanding role models and maximize learning for each girl through multimodality instruction and strategies reflecting research-based practice.

The Limudei Kodesh curriculum consists of both formal instruction and informal activities leading to the shared goal of developing a foundation of academic skills, good Middos, and a strong connection to HaKadosh Baruch Hu and His Torah. A warm and supportive classroom community addresses the academic and social needs of the girls, allowing them to feel confident and successful. Learning leveled vocabulary, understanding the structure of Chumash and applying lessons learned to situations in daily life help our students develop the perspective and skills to become Yirei Shamayim and true Bnos Yisrael.

Various academic programs, field trips, assemblies and extra-curricular activities that promote unity and school spirit and expand the knowledge of our students across the curriculum enhance the Girls School curriculum.

The General Studies Department at Yeshiva Elementary School offers a challenging academic program that not only teaches skills and content, but also teaches thinking. While our skills are aligned with Sunshine State Standards and Common Core Curriculum, our student-teacher ratio allows teachers to tailor the curriculum to each child’s strengths and needs. A sequential curriculum, assessment and differentiated instruction ensure that students graduate from Yeshiva Elementary superbly prepared for middle school.

INTERNATIONAL TORAH ACADEMY

Just a few years ago, in the pre-Covid environment, homeschooling in the Orthodox Jewish Community was almost a taboo. Today, more and more families, in response to both positive circumstances (home business or work-from-home opportunities, road schooling) and negative (Covid situation, mask mandates, cancellation of religious vaccine exemption, absence of Jewish schools in the area), look at homeschooling as a viable alternative joining the already impressive movement of over three million American families whose predecessors pioneered the way to home education back in 1970s.

Many families from growing movement of baleh teshuvah Jews as well as converts who did not grow up in a traditional orthodox education system also contribute to the total sum of Jewish homeschooling families.

International Torah Academy is the first umbrella school for EnglishSpeaking Torah Observant Jewish homeschoolers worldwide based out of Miami, FL. ITA opened its doors at the end of 2019, just a few months before Covid-19, to be able to accommodate about a dozen of families first and later to expand support to even more.

We are here with the director, Mrs. Esther Basha, to ask a few questions about the school.

JCM: What is an umbrella school and how does it help homeschoolers?

ITA: An umbrella school is a private non-location school that has a status of a regular private school but does not have a physical location. For homeschoolers, it is a perfect situation. They teach at the comfort of their home, and the staff at ITA provide them with curriculum assistance and administrative support: grades, transcripts, graduation requirements, college scholarship assistance, yeshiva and seminary relations, etc.

JCM: Do you accept students only from Florida?

ITA: Not at all. Our school is for English-speaking Torah observant Jewish students from all over the world. We have students from other states and receive inquiries from other countries. We are just starting to advertise as in the past three years we were focusing on serving the existing students while still developing our business model.

JCM: Are you authorized to issue an official High School diploma?

ITA: Yes. All graduates receive a Florida High School Diploma (FDOE #6357) with the State requirement of 24 credits to graduate. We also speak to college admissions on behalf of students and help make sure that their courses, grades, and community work hours are in line with college requirements in order to obtain scholarships. We develop relationships not only with Florida colleges and universities, but also with US top schools to help students transition into higher education smoothly. For those who pursue a seminary or yeshiva track, we assist in fulfilling pre-requisites before entering those programs.

P40 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM

JCM: Is it expensive to join your school?

ITA: Not at all. Our prices are much lower than those at traditional schools, and for the families in need we offer scholarships rates. You can see our packages on our website: www.InternationalTorahAcademy.org

JCM: Can parents use their own curriculum?

ITA: Absolutely. We also assist those who are new to homeschooling and do not know where to start, because there are so many choices today.

JCM: If someone is new to homeschooling and they do not have a background in education, what assistance can they receive?

ITA: Those families will use our In-House curriculum for the first year or two or even throughout the duration of homeschooling. Whenever they reach the comfort zone of building their own, they can switch curriculum options.

JCM: Do some families homeschool through ITA for one year and then go back to traditional brick-and-mortar school?

ITA: Yes, it happened several times. Some families want to take a break for a year. Some move from one state to another. For some parents it is harder than others. Life circumstances change. Homeschooling does not have to be a lifetime commitment. We look at it as an educational experience and opportunity to spend more quality time with your own children and get to know them better.

JCM: Can you accommodate a large number of students and give families individualized attention at the same time?

ITA: We are expanding, and so far, we have been able to do so. We are currently interviewing for Student Relations Specialists positions to be able to service more families.

JCM: Do students within your school interact with each other?

ITA: We have a Pen Pal Program as well as Business Incubator Program where students can work in teams if their parents choose to sign them up. We are also building a Torah Mate Program where High School students can have a chavruta to study Torah over the phone with.

JCM: Does your school have a rabbinical supervision?

ITA: Each family has their own rabbi who they advise with on the Torah education. Some of those rabbis teach the students and some just advise on what is to be taught.

JCM: Does homeschooling mean being locked in the house with one parent (assuming that the other one is working) all day?

ITA: This is a cliché, just like the idea that homeschooled kids do not get to socialize with others. They do have plenty of opportunities, by the way. There are homeschooling groups out there, and children do get plenty of playtime – more than in a traditional school, I would say. There are many models. Sometimes parents hire a teacher or two to come to their house during the week.

JCM: Does ITA take applications in the middle of the year?

ITA: Yes, we have a rolling admission process where parents can register their students throughout the year. Just go to our website – www.InternationalTorahAcademy.org - and fill out an application. We usually call parents for an interview within a few days.
