BONEI OLAM FLORIDA AND HOW IT WAS BORN
Meet Shimmy and Haddasa Manela the founders of Bonei Olam Florida
This is a story of life long pain transformed into tzedaka and chesed on another level. Bonei Olam was founded in 1999 by Rabbi and Rebbetzin Bochner. After many years of trying to conceive a child through IVF, they were unsuccessful. Through their tears, and with their sweat and blood, they started Bonei Olam. Treatments for IVF are notoriously expensive. If biology and science can say no, money is where we draw the line. Couples unable to have children because of financial means? Ridiculous in our tzedaka based communities. Rabbi Bochner had a vision. A vision where struggling couples could have what he and his wife could not, where his own friends and family who were suffering would no longer have to. His beautiful brain child, Bonei Olam, provides the financial support needed for the rigorous and abundant treatments. They have set their mission to provide all resources necessary to allow childless couples facing infertility the opportunity to pursue medical fertility treatment. From their pain and their strength, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Bochner have brought over 10,000 babies into this world with the aid of Bonei Olam. An unimaginable and monumental feat. Couples all over the tri-state area having been turning to Bonei Olam for help, emotionally and monetarily.
Enter Shimmy and Haddasa Manela. A young couple living in Florida undergoing their own IVF journey of eight years. They were familiar with
Rabbi Bochner and Bonei Olam as they had done many treatments in New York and had their own triumphs and tragedies with infertility. Although they hadn’t needed Bonei Olam for themselves, they couldn’t help but wonder how their own community was handling infertility costs. Could it be that they were suffering in silence? Current statistics indicate one out of every eight couples are faced with the challenges of infertility. That means someone in your shul, in your carpool rotation and on your block. What were all of these Florida couples doing for treatments?
In 2020, Shimmy and Haddasa sat down with Rabbi Bochner to discuss the south Florida communities infertility resources. They discovered there were little to no resources or funds. If a couple needed help, they had to fly all the way to New York. That means time off work, flights and hotels, adding to the costs of an already expensive process. The meeting progressed and the South Florida Chapter of Bonei Olam was born with Shimmy and Haddasa as cofounders.
Since the birth of the South Florida Chapter, they have assembled an incredible team of volunteers who work around the clock putting together fundraisers, managing the office and all the campaigns that come with running a non-profit organization.
OCTOBER 2022 / P9
At Bonei Olam Florida, they work with over fifty couples annually. When a couple reaches out for help, within twenty-four hours they are linked with a guidance counselor who is with them every step of the way. With the help of Bonei Olam’s medical team, they decide which clinic and which path the couple should take for the course of their treatment. When it comes to infertility, there is no guarantee that any treatment will work. Many couples have to do multiple treatments before a successful pregnancy comes around. With treatments costing over $18,000 per round, it is Bonei Olam’s top priority to continuously fundraise for the South Florida communities.
Fundraising with phone calls or links to a website is beautiful, but it lacks pizzazz. And one thing Shimmy and Haddasa do not lack, is pizzazz. They decided to start two annual fundraisers. Knockout and The Vault. Knockout is a volleyball tournament with food and entertainment that takes place in February. It’s a lively and well attended sporting event the whole of South Florida enjoys. The Vault is Bonei Olam Florida’s first annual event and how the whole South Florida Chapter kicked off.
The Vault is the dream shopping day out. A dedicated team of volunteers put together a massive, one of a kind popup-shop mall. There are Jewish vendors from all over the globe who jumped to have the opportunity to secure a spot at The Vault. Booths are set up in a large warehouse style venue, decorated to perfection. There are clothing booths, jewlery booths, wig booths, houseware booths, food booths and anything else you can think of. A beautiful cafe is set up and a movie room off to the side with Shimmy and Haddasa’s story playing on repeat. Swag bags are given out per ticket purchase, and raffles are held. There are plenty of opportunities for corporate sponsorships and many wonderful brands donate their products or their time. It’s aptly done right before the chagim so everyone can get their holiday shopping done in one spot. It’s a community favorite and the turn out is fantastic.
The first Vault event was done in September of 2021. It was located at the Chabad of Aventura and over 750 men and women attended. Each of those attendees all left the event shocked at what they had just experienced. Florida had never seen anything like it. A popup shop mall with over thirty diverse Jewish vendors all in one space? Miami Beach doesn’t even have a kosher butcher store, forget more than one Jewish establishment in the same place. Year one was a real hit, and Bonei Olam South Florida knew they had struck gold.
This year while planning The Vault, Bonei Olam Florida’s team spent months handpicking the best local and international vendors for the ultimate pre- holiday shopping experience. With over eighty vendors signed up for The Vault this year, they knew it would need to be bigger and better for the South Florida communities. The Vault took place at the Miami Airport Convention Center, an ultra large space designed for expos. Every inch was used and the event was packed with over 1,500 attendees, double the
P10 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM
amount from last year. The energy of the room was unbelievable. With so many Jewish entrepreneurs all in one room, you needed a map to make sure to hit every booth.
The Vault 2022 had a few more extras than 2021. An interactive “punch wall” was set up for attendees to win prizes. With a donation of $50 to Bonei Olam, people had the opportunity to punch through the punch wall and win prizes ranging in value from $5-$2,000. It was a huge hit, pardon the pun. The cinema room was not only playing Shimmy and Haddasa’s fertility journey, but other Bonei Olam couples’ stories as well. They spoke about their journey to parenthood, helping normalize the struggles of infertility. This years Vault raised enough funds to help over five couples begin their fertility treatments. An all around success, with hopes to come back even bigger and better next year.
Up until then, most people knew Shimmy and Haddasa Manela as a popular young couple in their twenties, with a thriving social life and a knack for hosting fabulous parties. When they brought Bonei Olam to Florida, they were seen in a different light. They weren’t just that fun couple you see on Instagram, they were a couple struggling with grief and child loss.
They are two people yearning for a child of their own. When you hear that one in every eight couples struggle with infertility, it’s just a concept that doesn’t feel very real. Until you pause and realize you have eight siblings, and ten people make a minyan. It’s a lot closer to home than you realize.
Shimmy and Haddasa looked at the pain of infertility and child loss in the face and made it their mission to never let another couple go through the same pain or heartbreak, due to a lack of funds or resources.
Since the Florida Chapter of Bonei Olam started in 2020, over 22 babies have been brought into this world. We look forward to continue building worlds together with the help of Bonei Olam South Florida.

TOP 10 CHOL HAMOED ACTIVITIES IN SOUTH FLORIDA
It’s Chol Hamoed and that means it’s time to take some trips, do something fun, and create memories. If you’re in South Florida, there is definitely not a lack of activities. So pack up your portable sukkah or grab some matzah as we bring you the top South Florida Chol Hamoed activities:
3
The Children’s Museum
2 Science Museums
1Lion Country Safari
Okay, we know. It’s a bit dated. But in terms of a full day, this is where it’s at. Drive-through Safari, petting zoo, activities. You can use one of their 15 seater vans (you might even get one with air conditioning) or your own car to drive through. It has actually been named top 10 safari park in the United States. There is also an awesome splash pad and rides in a separate section of the park. It’s out near West Palm, but it places you right near Boca making it a perfect place to spend the day and then stop for food in one of the many restaurants in Boca that have a Sukkah or are open for Pesach. Fun fact: if it’s a rainy day, you’ll probably see more animals on the safari.
While you can’t spend an entire day at these places, it will definitely fill up most of the day, and trust me, there’s a lot to do. Again, depending on which ones you choose, the science museums keep you close to food sources and succahs so that you can finish your morning with a late lunch under the schach. The Frost Science Museum, which is in Miami and the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science (obviously, in Fort Lauderdale) are both hands-on museums that will inspire the mind and your kid’s creativity. Make sure you check out what the current exhibit is, but even the permanent exhibits are worth the admission price. The Fort Lauderdale Museum also has the Imax theater which is a great way to finish the afternoon, and the Frost Museum has the planetarium. If you want to travel up to West Palm, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is a great choice! Right next door is the Palm Beach Art Museum, but more than that, your science museum admission ticket gives you a discount to the Palm Beach Zoo. Choose any one of these and turn your Chol Hamoed into something educational.
The Miami Children’s Museum is a great place for the younger set, but definitely not an all-day trip. It’s a hands-on fun-fest where kids can dress up, immerse themselves in pretend play, and even check out what a cruise ship is like. Make sure to check out what the latest exhibit is, but even the permanent ones are enough to fill a few hours of air-conditioned entertainment for your little ones. If you are near Boca and looking for an indoor play area, check out La-La Land. It has indoor fun for ages up to around 12.
4
The Van Gogh Exhibit
This indoor light show may be a bit pricey for a large group but is quite an experience. The immersive show takes participants into some of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous paintings. Literally. The visuals are jaw dropping and inspiring, and at the very least, provides incredible opportunities for some awesome pics. Advance tickets are required and can be purchased online.

5
Everglades National Park
Have you really been to South Florida if you haven’t seen an alligator? Going on an airboat ride is as South Florida as you can get and there are multiple places to pick up one of these sweet rides. You can probably even score a Groupon. It’s a great way to spend your time outdoors and learn a little about the Florida ecosystem. Make sure to bring sunscreen and bug spray though!
6
Wynwood Walls
This is a bit more relaxed and is actually more like a great place to take great pictures, but Wynwood Walls is a draw for tourists everywhere. If you’re travelling with kids, invest in the Graffitti experience and paint some graffiti art for an activity by the walls. You can also go close by to create your own chocolate delicacy at Ben B Coco (Certified under the ORB) – getting some shehakol treats that won’t leave you worrying about a sukkah.
7
Am Yam Kosher Boat Tours
This is the only kosher boat rental in Miami Dade and Broward. Rent the Amyam for a day on the intracoastal, the sandbar, or any private place you want to go with your family. The boat fits 10 people and includes an air-conditioned cabin, a kitchen, and a professional captain so you can relax and explore the waters. Best part: they’ll find you a secluded area to swim so you don’t have to worry about all the crowds.
9
8Xtreme Action Park
Located in Fort Lauderdale, this indoor park has something for everyone: Go Carts, Laser Tag, Escape Rooms, Bowling, Arcades, a Ropes Course. Every time I have gone there I find something new. Perfect for a rainy day or even a ridiculously hot day when you need some air conditioning and coffee.
Tigertail Aquatics and Bass Pro Shop
Heading out to Bass Pro Shops in Dania Beach, right near Hollywood, may sound kind of lame, but trust me. This shop is ridiculous. Between the taxidermy, the fish tanks, and the shooting range, it’s an experience just walking in. And older folks can fire some actual guns at the range on the second floor. Though not an all day experience, it is just across from Tigertail Aquatics where kids and adults can participate in a range of water activities including an aquatic obstacle course. Check it out and book a reservation.
10
Zoo Miami/ Palm Beach Zoo
If the Everglades is too adventurous for you, definitely head over to either of these top-rated zoos and spend the day marveling at animals you don’t see in your backyard at home. Don’t miss feeding the giraffes!
Chol Hamoed shouldn’t stress you out. With the activities available, you are sure to create fantastic memories for your family. Chag Sameach and enjoy!

SUKKOT, FROM A JEWISH PERSPECTIVE
The Holiday of Succoth falls on the fifteenth of the month of Tishrei, and lasts for seven days. Together with Pesach and Shavuoth, it is one of the three holidays when Jews made a pilgrimage to the Beth HaMikdash in the past. For the holiday of Sukkot people build a Sukkah and live in it. The sitting in the sukkah is in commemoration of Yetzias Mitzrayim and Succoth in which Bnei Yisroel lived in the desert.

ADDITIONAL NAMES OF THE HOLIDAY OF SUKKOT
THE HARVEST FESTIVAL
The Holiday of Sukkot, which is celebrated in the fall, has an agricultural aspect, and there is a reference to the seasonal change, and the prayer for the coming rain. The prayers of the holiday include thanksgiving for the produce of the previous year as well, and prayers for rain in the coming fall and winter. The seasonal change is felt when sitting in the sukkah outside the house, feeling the cool weather – the connection to nature and the four season is also emphasized by the four minim
THE TIME OF OUR JOY
The holiday of Sukkot is a time of happiness and rejoice, and rejoicing is an important asset of the holiday. According to Chazal, the reason of the joy is also due to the changing of the season, and the hope they are bringing, as well as the holiday follows immediately after Yom Kippur – a time when people are purified from the sins.
SUKKOT CUSTOMS
THE BUILDING OF THE SUKKAH
one can learn how to build a Sukkah. The Mishna sets some principles which must be followed in order for the Sukkah to qualify halachically:
• The Sukkah must be under the sky, and not under a tree or a roof
• The walls of the Sukkah must be made of temporary stuff, such as material or wood, but not of stone
• It is advisable that one side of the Sukkah should be open.
• The roof of the Sukkah is called schach, which has a dominant status in building the Sukkah, as it symbolizes the connection to the sky, and hence to Hashem. It must be from tree branches or plants which are detached from the ground, and the sky must be discerned through the schach
THE SOURCE FOR DECORATING THE SUKKAH
This obligation was added by Chazal – and is a beautifying of the Mitzvah. The Sukkah is decorated with beautiful decorations and utensils, which make it colorful and enjoyable.
We sit, eat, host and sleep in the Sukkah. It should serve the same uses as the permanent home.
HOSPITALITY IN THE SUKKAH – USHPIZIN AND GUESTS
In addition to the above two sources, the holiday of Sukkot is brought in the Mishna in the Tractate of Sukkah, and gets extensive coverage in the Gemara, in Chazal’s literature, and in Kabbala books.
The building of the Sukkah and dwelling in it are the main symbols of the holiday. We build Sukkot in commemoration of Yetzias Mitzrayim, as Bnei Yisroel lived in temporary Sukkot in the desert. The dwelling in the Sukkah connects people to Hashem, to nature, and to the produce. In the tractate of Sukkah in the Mishna
Ushpizin are the Aramaic word for guests. This custom has its sources in Kabbalah, and it was started in the Middle Ages. The Ushpizin are spiritual guests – the ancestors of our nation: Abraham, Isaac, Yaakov, Moshe, Aharon, Yoseph, and David. According to our sources, our ancestors come to visit us in the Sukkah, each one at his

turn, and each one represents a spiritual trait according to Kabbalah.
Besides the Ushpizin, other honored guests are invited to the Sukkah, as well as the poorest people in the community – this is the hospitality of this holiday.
SIMCHAS BETH HASHOEVA
During the holiday, there are customs of pouring water. At the end of the holiday there are prayers for water. The source of Simchas Beth HaShoeva is from the days of the Holy Temple.
During the year they used to spill wine on the altar, while in Sukkot they spilt water and prayed for rain.
Although we don’t have the Holy Temple, we celebrate the Simchas Beth Hashoeva in synagogues and in the streets, not by spilling water, as we no longer have it, but by reciting Tehillim, like the well-known psalm “ושאבתם מים בששון ממעייני הישועה”.
THE FOUR MINIM AND THE COMMANDMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM
The four Minim are mentioned in the Torah:
The four Minim are the Esrog, the Lulav, the Haddassim, and the Aravos, and together they symbolize the diversity of the nature in Eretz Yisroel, with its different regions. Each one of them represents a different climate and different sorts of agriculture. The Esrog and the Aravos need a lot of water.
The date grows in the desert, while the Haddas grows on the mountains. They need cool mountains air.
The Medrash explains each of the four Minim:
Each one represents a part of the Jewish nation, and all of the together symbolize the unity of the nation before Hashem:
• The Esrog – has a good taste and smell, symbolizes righteous Torah scholars
• The Lulav doesn’t have a smell: it has good fruits although it has no smell, symbolizes people who are Torah scholars but are not righteous
• The Haddas – has good smell but no fruits: symbolizes righteous people who are not Torah scholars
• The Arava – has no smell and no fruit, symbolizes people who are not Torah scholars and righteous either
Another explanation likens the four Minim to the parts of the body:
• The Esrog looks like the heart: the heart which serves Hashem
• The Lulav looks like the spine: expressing the purification of the body to the service of Hashem
• The Haddas looks like eyes: one has to protect his eyes from deflecting him from the service of Hashem, even on a happy holiday like Sukkot
• The Arava looks like lips: one has to which his lips in order to use them in praying during the holiday of Sukkot
The four Minim are brought to the Sukkah, and there is a blessing on them.
THE MITZVAH OF HOLDING THE LULAV
The mitzvah of holding the Lulav (in the Sukkah) is named after the Lulav, as it is the tallest and most important from the four Minim. The mitzvah of the blessing on the Lulav is being recited on all the days of the holidays, except for Shabbos. In order to beautify the mitzvah of Lulav, people are stringent in choosing especially nice four Minim, but especially a beautiful Esrog. By uniting the four Minim, we signify the unity of the Jewish nation.
HOSHANA RABBAH – A UNIQUE POEM FOR THE HOLIDAY OF SUKKOT
On Sukkot Jews recite the poem of “Hoshana”, which is name after the recurring chorus of “Hosha Na”. While reciting the poem, the Chazan descends from the Bimah, holding the four Minim, and the congregation follows him while circling the Bimah of the synagogue and singing the poem. Each day of Sukkot has its own poem, but the common denominator is prayers for the health and peace of the Jewish nation. Hoshana Rabbah is the last day of Sukkot. It is considered as a day of Judgment, in which Hashem seals the verdict of the world, which was issued on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

YESHIVA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PREPARES FOR ROSH HASHANAH
With Rosh Hashanah right around the corner, students at Yeshiva Elementary School (YES) located in Miami Beach, Florida, had the opportunity for hands on activities in preparation of the New Year.
Yeshiva Elementary School’s youngest learners in the Early Childhood Center enjoyed learning about the symbols and fruits of Rosh Hashanah and created beautiful plates for apples and honey.
For the older elementary students, authentic learning came alive with a lesson in blowing the shofar, discussing the significance and role of the shofar, and giving students the opportunity of blowing the shofar!
Nothing like the motivation and engagement that comes when learning about something you passionately value and care about. Yeshiva Elementary School prides itself with delivering lessons that go beyond the classroom, engaging all students in the learning process.
Yeshiva Elementary School, under the leadership of Rabbi Yisroel Moshe Janowski, nurture each student and fosters an environment which allows each student to grow
academically, socially, and morally, throughout their developing years and beyond.

YESHIVA ELEMENTARY CREATES SUCCESS CENTER
The inaugural year of the newly created Success Center at Yeshiva Elementary School in North Miami Beach (Y.E.S.) kicked off on the very first day of school and has been an uplifting and rewarding experience. Assessments in reading and math have been conducted and the students began to engage in reading and math exercises. In addition to the emphasis on strengthening each child’s skills in those subjects, the program also provides an enrichment component, weekly STEM activities, and the inclusion of a speaker series. Students will partake in team-building independent exercises using LEGO® Technic™ and programmable robotic kits in Centers and Explorations. Journal writing, critical thinking skills exercises, and interest-based learning opportunities will also be afforded.
The Success Center’s purpose is helping each child reach their full potential in a joyful, nurturing, and supportive environment. Low student-teacher ratios and small class-sizes are key components of the program. Dr. Martin Karp, who has more than 30 years in the field of education, serves as the Success Center’s facilitator and supervisor. Dr. Karp taught Gifted and enrichment classes for 15 years and the strategies he employed in those classes are being incorporated into our Success Center.
Students participate in the Success Center beginning immediately after their lunch period until 4:00 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and until 2:00 on Fridays. Each day, students in the Success Center join their homeroom peers for Recess.
The Success Center is currently working with the Levy Learning Center, a local provider of academic services with a proven track record in developing and
strengthening children’s basic skills. The Success Center is implementing the Orton Gillingham approach, as it is the best research-based method in teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension and written language. The goal of using this individualized approach is for your child to improve his reading skills and develop a passion for reading.
To expedite each child’s progress in reading, the Success Center is recommending but are not requiring between 30 to 60 minutes a day of homework. Practice is essential to achieve fluent mastery and is made possible by using the MaxScholar Orton Gillingham software. For better results, it is advised that each child alternates one day doing MaxPhonics or MaxWords, and one day doing MaxReading. Reading and listening to stories for pleasure is highly encouraged, too.
The Success Center is also teaming up with Mathnasium, whose approach is to help students using methods that make sense to them. Their formula has yielded significant results in more than 1,000 locations in the United States and Canada. Customized assessments were completed, and students’ learning needs were pinpointed. Using Mathnasium’s approach allows us in the Success Center to determine with great accuracy exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. The outcomes from the assessments reveal each specific skill area that needs to be mastered so the boys in class are not wasting time reviewing concepts they already know. Assessments continue throughout the year.
One of the STEM-related activities is being directed under the guidance of inventor and entrepreneur Ivan Yaeger.
His Technology Leaders Initiative (TLI) allows students to develop a myriad of academic, career and life skills by exploring and creating technology. TLI also provides students with a tremendous feeling of accomplishment resulting from converting their ideas into tangible reality. This uniquely motivating experience instills students with the attitude “if your mind can conceive it and your heart can believe it, then you can achieve it.” Invention demonstrations, and exciting handson product engineering workshops are provided along with project-based activities which enable students to discover, design and build technology. (Photo Attached)
Y.E.S. looks forward to the continued Success Center programming and looks forward to working with the children in making a positive difference.
Yeshiva Elementary School is under the umbrella of Talmudic University, its main campus located in Miami Beach. Individual schools as part of the conglomerate include: ECE (Early Childhood Education); Mechina of South Florida (est. 1965); Yeshiva Elementary School separate Boys and Girls campus; Adres Middle School; Yeshiva Middle School; Talmudic College and Kollel.
