Dear Editor,

I am a dedicated reader of the South Florida Community Voice, which has been a source of inspiration for me over the past year. As a member of the South Florida community, I wanted to share some thoughts and reflections on a topic of importance to our community.

In our fast-paced and ever-changing world, it is heartening to see the enduring values and traditions upheld by the South Florida Orthodox community. The commitment to Yiddishkeit, family, and community that I witness here is truly commendable. This spirit of unity and devotion is a testament to the strength of our community and the values we hold dear.

I have particularly appreciated the recent articles in the South Florida Community Voice, including the interesting and uplifting interviews with Yossi Bayles and Chavruta Zecharya that have explored the role of Emunah in our daily lives and the importance of fostering intergenerational connections. These themes resonate deeply with many of us, and they serve as a reminder of the profound impact of our faith on our families and our community as a whole.

As we continue to navigate the challenges of the modern world, it is my hope that The South Florida Community Voice will continue to provide a platform for discussing topics that are relevant to our Orthodox community in South Florida. These discussions help us stay connected, informed, and spiritually nourished.

I would like to express my gratitude to you and your team for your dedication in bringing us this valuable publication each week. Your efforts in fostering a sense of unity and faith within our community are greatly appreciated.

I look forward to reading more enlightening articles in the future and being a part of this thriving Orthodox community in South Florida.

Sincerely,

We are honored to introduce the South Florida Community Voice. We will be featuring local updates, articles and ads of local businesses. We have an affiliation with the finest and most reputable business owners and service providers within our Jewish community.

Spreading Joy with Milk and Honey:

Delivering Rosh Hashanah Food & Personal Hygiene Baskets to Seniors and Holocaust Survivors

On a bright and meaningful Sunday morning, September 10, 2023, Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS) came together to carry out an inspiring initiative known as JCS Milk & Honey. This heartfelt community service program aims to deliver Rosh Hashanah food and personal hygiene baskets to Holocaust survivors and homebound seniors, symbolizing the sweetness of life and the nourishment of tradition. With over 500 dedicated volunteers joining forces, JCS Milk & Honey not only spreads joy but also exemplifies the essence of compassion and unity within the Jewish community.

In the spirit of Rosh Hashanah, JCS Milk & Honey seeks to ensure that every member of the Jewish community can partake in this joyous occasion. It focuses on reaching out to those who are most vulnerable and in need, particularly Holocaust survivors and homebound seniors. JCS Milk & Honey, the name of this community service program, carries profound symbolism. Just as milk and honey are symbols of nourishment and sweetness in Jewish tradition, the program aims to bring nourishment and sweetness to the lives of those it serves.

The heartwarming journey of JCS Milk & Honey began days before Rosh Hashanah. Volunteers from all walks of life, young and old, came together to prepare the food and personal hygiene baskets. These baskets were meticulously crafted with love and care, ensuring that they not only meet the nutritional needs of the recipients but also bring a smile to their faces.

The contents of these baskets

were carefully chosen to reflect the spirit of Rosh Hashanah. They included traditional foods such as honeycake and challah, symbolizing hope and sweetness in the coming year. Additionally, the baskets were

JCS Milk & Honey is not just a one-day event; it leaves a lasting impact on both the recipients and the volunteers. For the seniors and survivors, it offers a lifeline of support, a gesture that reminds them they are not forgotten. It brings them the comfort of knowing that their community cares for their well-being.

For the volunteers, JCS Milk & Honey is a powerful lesson in compassion, unity, and the significance of giving back. It fosters a sense of pride in their heritage and a commitment to tikkun olam, the Jewish concept of repairing the world.

stocked with essential personal hygiene items, recognizing the importance of dignity and self-care for seniors and survivors.

On the day of the event, the sense of purpose and excitement was palpable. Volunteers assembled at the JCS center, ready to embark on their mission of spreading joy. Each volunteer was assigned a specific route, along with a list of addresses. They carried with them not only the physical baskets but also the warmth of the community’s collective heart.

As they knocked on the doors of seniors and survivors, the volunteers were greeted with smiles, gratitude, and sometimes tears of joy. For many recipients, JCS Milk & Honey is not just about the physical sustenance but also a reminder that they are cherished members of the community. It provides them with a sense of belonging and a connection to their heritage.

JCS Milk & Honey is a shining example of how the Jewish community comes together to celebrate and share the sweetness of life during Rosh Hashanah. It represents the values of compassion, unity, and tradition that lie at the heart of the Jewish faith.

In the face of adversity and challenges, the Jewish community continues to stand strong and reach out to its most vulnerable members. JCS Milk & Honey is a testament to the enduring spirit of kindness and generosity that defines the Jewish people.

As we look forward to another year, may initiatives like JCS Milk & Honey continue to flourish, ensuring that the sweetness of life and tradition are shared with all, especially those who need it most. In doing so, we not only strengthen our community but also enrich our own lives with the sweetness of giving.

Voices of Wisdom - Rabbis Reflect on Teshuva Within the Community

The South Florida Community Voice magazine asked a few local Rabbis from South Florida their perspectives on the significance of teshuvah in the modern world and its relevance to our community.

Teshuva comes from the Hebrew word “return”. Understanding why this is so is the key to understanding the concept of Teshuva.

According to Jewish tradition we are endowed with a soul that comes from God. Even when we make mistakes, our souls remain pure. Teshuva is the process by which we return to our essential selves. We acknowledge our mistakes (after

all, to err is human), but we also declare that we are not defined by our mistakes. We can choose to aspire to become the best version of ourselves, a version that has always existed in potential. Change can be scary; but Teshuiva is not change. Teshuva is a return to our values and our real priorities. Teshuva is a pivot towards the best version of ourselves. Teshuva is a gift and should be viewed as a source of comfort, optimism and inspiration.

As much as we may feel bad for any wrong done, it’s impossible to rewrite history. But we can look at it from a different perspective and use the actual mistake as a springboard for doing good. That’s Teshuva! Where the negative itself is transformed into positive. And that’s the ultimate goal of every being, to transform the mundane world into a perfect G-dly utopia. Into a world of peace and perfection! A world with Moshiach! May any negative going on in your life, somehow be transformed into sweet blessings!

Shana Tova Umetuka to all,

Teshuva, from our hearts, emerges as an extraordinary force for forging profound, positive transformations in one’s life. It confronts head-on the universal struggle of breaking free from the clutches of bad habits and sinful behavior, delving deep into the very essence of human frailty. As the Talmud wisely discerns, the relentless grip of habitual sin can warp our moral compass, making the forbidden appear deceptively permissible. Yet, within this struggle, there lies a flicker of hope—a spark of redemption.

The Torah whispers to us that every choice we make carries within it the potential for change, capable of birthing entirely new environments and opportunities, both radiant and perilous. Teshuva, this sacred return, comes alive in its relevance when confronting the shadows of our own vices. It beckons us to rewrite the narrative, to alter our surroundings, and to reach out to the embrace of a compassionate community. It offers a luminous path towards rebirth, acknowledging the profound influence of past actions and the shifting tides of circumstance. In its essence, Teshuva is a heartfelt plea, a rallying cry for personal and communal revival, resonating with the very soul of our human journey.

Miami Beach, FL – Hebrew Academy celebrated the grand opening of the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Family Building, home to the Joseph Markovitz High School and the Charlotte Rohr Middle School on Sunday, September 10th, in Miami Beach, FL. This momentous occasion was marked with a meaningful ceremony, a hachnasat sefer torah, and a festive brunch held in the lobby of the new building.

Nestled in the heart of Miami Beach on Pine Tree Drive, the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy has been a beacon of education and inspiration for Jewish youth in South Florida for over an impressive 75 years. Throughout its rich history, Hebrew Academy has continuously sought innovative ways to engage its students and strengthen the community.

This past Sunday morning the school opened their remarkable new building and joyfully welcomed Sifrei Torah into the new Fancy and Jimmy Saka Beit Midrash. The day’s events began with an exclusive reception at 11:00 a.m., honoring those whose generous contributions have made

During the ceremony, the over 400 guests in attendance heard from school leaders Dr. Kalman Stein, Head of School and Jean Kim-Lehmann, Hebrew Academy Board President. Mayor Dan Gleber from the City of Miami Beach spoke about this historic moment for the school and proclaimed September 10th to be Hebrew Academy Day. Throwing my glasses: How I won a deal without saying a word

I reached for my glasses and blew off the dust. Not because they dropped, but because I threw them. I threw them hard, and with vengeance. They almost broke in two.

It was all because I was being asked to leave a business I had innocently knocked on. I was used to getting rejected so that wasn’t the source of my frustration. But rather I wanted to finally show some grit. My prospect innocently seemed like someone who would appreciate it too. Fast forward 10 minutes, and my wild bet actually worked. I was having coffee with this boss in his office.

The sequence all started because I approached a sanitation business. I wanted to sell them. But I was getting rejected by Marco, who I soon learned to be the boss. He was eyeing me from his office, separated from a set of stairs by a metal gate. I was annoyed because I had already been buzzed in through the glass

doors on street level. It was probably assumed that I was a vendor. But Marco was there, waiting for me. He wanted me off his property, and now! I should have known that I had the look of a salesman: iPad in hand, sport coat wrinkle free, and dress sneakers lacking even that unassuming scuff mark.

This business district seemed to be no place for a young Jewish boy. It was my first month on the job. I had been pounding the pavement in sales all day. This I decided, was to be my last stop. Little did I know, I had just walked myself into the lions den, knocking on this Italian business, a sanitation company in Suffolk County, Long Island New York. But up the stairs I continued, ready to finally close a sale.

However, Marco was there, waiting to get rid of me. It almost worked. But I realized that I had nothing to lose. So I pulled an unexpected move for the both of us, and stood my ground although he stood over me, lookeding imposing.

“I’m here to see if you would be interested in discussing your merchant services”, I stated with conviction. (Not a great way to get a conversation started in the first place, but I was learning).

“We’re not interested and I don’t want you here”, Marco answered coldly.

“Well your secretary let me in”, I replied confidently.

“We’re not interested”, his voice raised by now.

“I want to speak with the boss!” I stubbornly insisted.

“Get off my property,” Marco stammered.

“Not before you let me speak with you,” recognizing he was the boss, and with that, I angrily threw my glasses to the ground in a rage of half fake frustration.

I had sealed my fate. Marco, surprised that some little 26 year old in pressed clothing would muster this stubborn reaction, nodded his head with a slight smile. I had just figured out his password. The gate was unlocked and opened, with Marco telling me to follow him. I was led into his office which had him pictured with every crony NY had seen since sushi was first introduced at a Jewish wedding. I guess you could say his business was in bed with the mob. Within minutes, we were both drinking coffee and talking about world politics. With a kippah on my head, he spoke about Israel and the right to defend itself. He really didn’t like the U.S. telling it what it could and could not do. I was listening and probably nodding, while he was doing all the ranting.

As he finished his monologue, he asked me what I wanted. I informed him of the appropriate paperwork. Within a few minutes, I was walking down those steps where my glasses had just lay, but this time, I had documents in hand.

The lessons are many. But the two that stay with me from that day are:

1. When you learn how to properly read your prospect, you’re that much closer to making the sale before you even start.

2. Don’t be afraid to break your glasses.

Healthy Eating During The Chagim

How often has that Jewish guilt set in as you look at the scale post-Yom Tov, seeing a number higher than ever before? How frequently have you promised to limit yourself to one bite of challah, only to find three pieces on your plate? With all the delicious meals, it can be challenging to maintain a strict regiment - especially one that requries resisting those delicious dishes you have smelled cooking all week long. True, although you may need to exert some self control, there is a way to have your challah - and eat it too.

The best tool you can use, is ensuring you feel satiated. It’s far to easy to overindulge in kugel when your hungry and craving sweet carbs. Therefore, when it’s time to fill your plate with delicious foods, add protein and vegetables first. Apart from the numerous long-term health benefits, prioritizing protein and vegetables will help you feel full sooner and for more extended periods of time. The amounts may vary according to your size but a palmsized serving of protein and a fist-sized portion of vegetables should be your aim. Protein sources encompass any animal products including fish, meat, chicken, eggs, or dairy. Legumes, tofu, and certain grains may also offer protein- just make sure to double the quantity if they serve as your primary protein source.

Next, preparation will be your

best friend. Late-night eating often contributes to weight gain, and, if your goal is fat loss, this can pose a challenge when our evening meals usually commence post-shul. Given that most literature suggests late-night eating leads to increased food consumption, it’s advisable to have a filling snack before shul to offset cravings during the seudah. For optimal results, have a protein filled snack like a protein shake (or fish/chicken/ meat during seudat shlishit). Arriving to the meals well-prepared also means ensuring proper hydration. Many people confuse hunger with dehydration, so aim for at least 10 cups of water dailywith an extra cup immediately before indulging in challah.

Lastly, if you’re the one preparing the meals, there are a number of ways you can prepare to maximize success. First, consider serving the salad and fish alongside the challah course. This allows you to load up on protein and vegetables instead of extra challah. Second, favor recipes that don’t rely heavily on processed foods. Ultraprocessed foods tend to pack in sugar and sodium in concentrated doses, leaving us craving more. If your goal is to decrease overconsumption, it is best to provide delicious recipes with fewer processed ingredients. Additionally, chewing your food and eating slowly allows your body to recognize satiety. Allow the meal to incorporate divrei torah, zemirot, and

lively discussion between courses. This way, once it’s time for dessert, you and your guests will already feel satiated before deciding whether to eat that extra slice of cake.

A final note regarding alcoholits impact on our bodies often goes underestimated. Apart from its direct effects on the liver, cardiovascular system, and mental health, alcohol is calorie-dense, containing more calories than many other food categories. This does not mean you must refrain entirely from alcohol, as this can be an important part of the Seudah. Instead, decide in advance how much to include in your meal and portion it out accordingly.

While the topic of nutrition can be more nuanced and, at times controversial, I hope these small pieces of advice can help you enjoy your chagim while maintaining the healthy lifestyle you aspire to achieve. The key takeaway here - with moderation we can enjoy ourselves while maintaining our ideals guiltfree. Wishing you a Kesiva V’Chasima Tova and a year filled with health and happiness!!

Rosh Hashanah Recipe Chicken With Apples

Chicken With Apples is a dreamy and delicious Rosh Hashanah meal. I’ve been making this dish for years and it never gets old.

I use a mandoline to save time. And making sure all the apples and veg are uniform size looks so elegant and ensures all ingredients cook evenly.

PREPARATION

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon, mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper. Rub over the chicken.

3. Heat oil, over high heat, in an ovenproof saute pan that is large enough to fit all the chicken in one layer without crowding the pan. If the pan is too small, work in batches. Brown chicken pieces about 4 to 5 minutes on each side.

4. Transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside.

5. Add onions, fennel, and apples to the saute pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring to make sure they don’t burn.

6. Return chicken and any accumulated juices to the saute pan with onions, fennel, and apples; cook for 5 minutes.

7. Add broth and place pan in the oven. Continue cooking for 30 minutes.

8. Arrange chicken on a large platter. Surround chicken with onions, fennel, and apples. Pour pan juices over top.

SCHOOLS

Yeshivat Torat Yosef is off to an amazing start!

With their second year and the opening of their elementary school there is so much excitement in the air. From our modest start of 20 when we first opened last year to having close to 100 children this year, Yeshivat Torat Yosef is growing at an extraordinary rate. The school features Accreditations like Gold Seal, dedicated teachers and staff that strive to give each child the best education in both Judaic and Secular studies. Our Kindergarten and Elementary students bring additional life to the school. It’s beautiful to see the young boys and girls taking their first steps into learning and growing

into B’nei Torah and B’not Yisrael with our stellar curriculum.

On our expansive 10 acre campus, we have the good fortune to have our very own basketball court, volleyball court, football field, soccer field, and massive playground. Additionally, the property includes our very own auditorium with ample parking. The auditorium is now open for bookings for all occasions, like Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and more.

If you have any questions or if you would like to see our beautiful campus and school, please contact us at Toratyosef.org or (954) 751-3277
