Gordon Lentzner

Alpert Jewish Community Center

BIRTHPLACE/HOMETOWN: I was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 27th, 1931. My mother and her parents were born in Russia. My Dad was born in Poland and left to come to the U.S. in 1912, enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1914, and received his citizenship as a result of his military service. FAMILY: The volunteer efforts of my wife, Judi, and brother Gene are widely known and have been recognized many times in our community. The rest of my family consists of our son, Joel, our daughter, Julie, and five granddaughters. MILITARY: Upon graduation from Stanford University I immediately entered the Army as an Artillery officer after being in R.O.T.C at both Washington University in St. Louis and Stanford. After completing my training, I was sent to South Korea, 30 miles north of Seoul, just south of the Imjin River and the Demilitarized Zone (separating North and South Korea), where I spent 16 months in charge of the ammunition, the motor pool, the PX, and the indigenous labor. SERVICE: When I returned from military service, I lived in West L.A. where I was involved in and became president of the Young Adult group at Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills. When I moved to the Long Beach area, the first Board I joined was Jewish Family Service with a total of 1 3/5 staff, (the secretary worked 3 days a week), long before it was J.F.C.S. Subsequently I became president of J.F.S. and have been a member and president of the Federation, AJCC, the L.B. Public Corporation for the Arts, and ChildNet, and a member of the L.B. Symphony Board. Twenty years ago I organized and still head the Klezmer Band for the AJCC. 2

David Gollub

Congregation Lubavitch

BIRTHPLACE/HOMETOWN: I was born in St. Louis, Missouri at a very young age. In fact, I was a baby. My family of origin - and in fact also my family of choice - was a nice Jewish family - there were four boys, a mom and a dad. I would have liked a sister -why didn’t my parents learn how to produce one? FAMILY: My current family of choice has 11 children. Our baby is 15. She doesn’t think of herself as a baby. Can you imagine that? MILITARY: I was in the army for 2 years - during Vietnam virtually everyone was eligible. Surprisingly, for someone like myself the Army was fun. During my year in Vietnam I was battalion level clerk typing letters for Southern gentlemen officers who if they could write a grammatical sentence could not write a grammatical paragraph. I was physically safer there than I am here. I still remember the people I was friends with - a hillbilly from Arkansas and a part American Indian. SERVICE: My motivation for serving my synagogue? I’m a Jew and that’s what Jews do. I’m happy being a follower and not a leader. I look to the rabbis for guidance and for answers to my tortured and tortuous Torah questions.

I’m a member of the Masons and the Scottish Rite. I have spearheaded “Project Tanakhs for the Troops” raising enough money to help provide over 300 Jewish Soldiers with a Tanakh as part of a joint venture with the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council and the Jewish Publication Society. SERVICE: Me and my family have been members of Congregation Shir Chadash AKA Temple Beth Zion-Sinai for over 50 years. During my terms of office as President, Vice President, & Head Trustee I have helped in securing royalty monies owed to the synagogue for over 15 years, directed the refurbishing of our Temple office and school and guided the membership through a change of mantle to start anew as a Progressive synagogue.

Hebrew Academy

BIRTHPLACE/HOMETOWN: I was born and raised in Corona, California. I lived and went to school there until I went directly to the military. FAMILY: I have two wonderful parents (Zvi & Rachel) that raised me, taught me to learn and enjoy life. They helped and supported me with sports, boy scouts, school and life experiences. With their guidance, I was able to go to a great school, enter the military and eventually find an amazing wife, Nelli, with whom we have raised two amazing children Ethan & Ariel. We currently reside in Huntington Beach. MILITARY: I attended the Air Force Academy, and served in the active duty throughout the U.S. (from Alaska to North Dakota). Eventually I joined the Air Force Reserve where I am still a member. I flew KC-135 Stratotankers, air to air re-fuelers and served in every major campaign including Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, SE Asia, and many more. I was privileged to act as a Lay Leader in many of my deployments where I led services and helped support our fellow Jewish troops. SERVICE: Currently I help support the Jewish community from the AJCC, Chabad, and the Hebrew Academy of Orange County. Most recently I was honored to help with several programs to include the making of the world's largest Latke, and the Operation Gratitude that the 4th grade students of the Hebrew Academy did to support the troops. I am honored to be part of such a great community.

Hillel

BIRTHPLACE/HOMETOWN: I am from Huntington Beach and graduated high school in 2004. FAMILY: I am father to a wonderful 9 year old boy named Ethan.I enjoy backpacking with my son, and especially watching him play ice hockey at Lakewood Ice Rinks. During my last year in college, I started a commercial and residential cleaning company that I still run today with my mother. It has given her a second chance at a career and it is something she thoroughly enjoys. After graduating college I went to work in the banking industry where I worked as a commercial banker helping small businesses obtain financing to grow their business. MILITARY: After High School Graduation I enlisted in the US Navy where I served for 5 years and was honorably discharged in 2011. SERVICE: During my time in college, I began attending Hillel events and found them very enjoyable and uplifting. I became more involved as time passed in college and would find myself more involved with Hillel each semester. The friends I made during that time created a wonderful experience and I am so happy I have those friendships in my life. After graduating from college, I reached out to Rachel about maintaining contact with Hillel and finding ways to be of help. She convinced me to join the board of directors. At the same time, I went through the Federation’s Alpert New Leaders Forum program. It was a great experience and helped reaffirm my commitment to Judaism and giving back to the community. In November of 2016 I was recognized for my hard work and commitment to the Long Beach community with the 40 Under 40 Award from the Long Beach Post. I plan to continue working with Hillel as a volunteer with the goal of growing the Jewish presence on campus at CSULB. 6
