He is the author of eight books including, with Robert Paxton, Vichy France and the Jews, first published in 1982 and just reissued in France. During the month of April, the Zena and Pauline Gatov Gallery will be featuring “Anne Frank-A History for Today”, which is on loan from The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect.
We are just finishing celebrating Passover and the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery. In April, our Jewish calendar continues with Yom HaShoah, a day of remembrance and commemoration of the darkest period in our history, the Holocaust. We then continue to Yom Ha’Atzmaut to celebrate the miracle that is Israel. Let us join together this month for and take part in the events that mark our Jewish Journey. Yom HaShoah Our 2018 Community Yom HaShoah Commemorative Candle Lighting and Holocaust Memorial Service, open to all, begins at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 15th in the Lipeles Auditorium at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. This annual Yom HaShoah event is truly a community effort with rabbis and cantors from all the local synagogues participating in the memorial service. This year, the service will be led by Rabbi Mark Goldfarb of Temple Beth Ohr. Guest Speaker – Michael Marrus
Professor Michael Marrus is the distinguished speaker of this year’s Yom HaShoah Day of Remembrance 2018/5778 event.

Art Exhibit: Anne Frank-A History for Today In addition to the speaker, we invite everyone to tour the special Yom HaShoah art exhibit, “Anne Frank-A History for Today”, in the Zena & Pauline Gatov Gallery. The exhibit will be up for display during the entire month of April. The exhibit shows photographs of Anne Frank’s childhood in Frankfurt and in Amsterdam, and portrays the rise of the Nazis, the persecution of the Jews and the way the people responded to this. In a consequent way the exhibition shows the impact of the Nazi policy on one particular family. The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, founded by Otto Frank in 1959, is a nonprofit organization with a focus on civil and human rights activism in the United States. The group’s stated objective is to advocate “for the kinder and fairer world of which Anne Frank dreamed.” This exhibit is made possible in part from a grant from the Einstein Family Tolerance and Holocaust Education Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation. Gerda Seifer Yom HaShoah Fund The Jewish Community Foundation has honored Gerda Seifer by naming the Yom HaShoah Fund in her name. The fund makes possible the annual Community Yom HaShoah observance program, as well as other Holocaust education activities and programs. If you would like to contribute to the important work of memorializing the Holocaust, please make your tax deductible donation payable to the Jewish Community Foundation and mail to the attention of Yolanda Placencio at 3801 East Willow Street, Long Beach, 90815 or call (562) 426-7601 ext. 1314 to charge by phone. Donations received by April 10th, 2018 will be recognized in the printed program of the event on April 15th, 2018. Yom Ha’tzmaut- Israel Independence Day Our community will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Israel’s Independence on Thursday, April 19th at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. The festivities begin with a Kosher Israeli-style vegetarian dinner at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is $10. Being A Part of Something Powerful By Danny Levy, Director of Development
One special part of the Community Mission to Israel from this past fall, was The Jewish Agency for Israel’s Absorption Center, Ulpan Etzion Ye’elim in Be’er Sheva. For more than 80 years, the Jewish Agency for Israel has been synonymous with Aliyah. So far, more than three million people from around the world have come and built their homes in Israel with their help. Mostly through absorption centers. The centers give the opportunity to learn Hebrew, visit important heritage sites throughout the country, and learn to become part of Israeli society. As the largest city in the Negev Desert, Be’er Sheva is considered “the capital of the Negev”, and is known for its large student population and high percentage of young-adult residents. Be’er Sheva is home to Ben-Gurion University and the renowned Soroka Medical Center. Many high-tech companies and plants, including those of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Israel Aerospace Industries, are located in and around Be’er Sheva, and a new high-tech park is being built near the city’s North Railway Station. Be’er Sheva also has interesting museums, theater, music, and other cultural offerings. The Ulpan Etzion Ye’elim program is housed at the The Jewish Agency’s Ye’elim Absorption Center in Be’er Sheva, near a shopping center with a bank, post office, pharmacy, grocery store, and bakery. The 156 housing units include 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, each with a kitchenette,

bathroom, small dining area, and basic furnishings. Ulpan Etzion students are housed one student per bedroom. The apartments come with central heating and hot water. The facilities include a laundry room. Students may order connections for television, cable television and the internet at their own expense. We were lucky enough to hear the stories of two young men who recently arrived from Ethiopia. They were gladly joining other family members who had already made Aliyah. They each shared their story of life in Ethiopia, their struggle to live there for many years while other family members were already in Israel. They spoke about the center and the activities they participated

in. Their English was quite good. We also met other Israelis from Ethiopia, who treated us to some traditional coffee, bread and popcorn! We then toured the converted garage of the building which housed many classrooms, each set up for a different area of learning. It was a wonderful experience and great opportunity for us to see where some of the dollars raised right here in Greater Long Beach, go far beyond our borders and touch other Jewish people, you couldn’t image. We help create this positive experience for those new to Israel. We are the part of something powerful.

ENSURE OUR FUTURE Later is Too Late: Preventing Chaos in Estate Planning By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development
Many people plan and prepare mostly for the immediate and near future and when we’re blindsided by the unexpected, we lament that we did not do more planning. According to Susan Alpert, “Anything can happen to you and your loved ones and even though you know this intellectually, have you taken action?” “How to Prioritize and Plan for the Future” is the topic that will be presented on Monday, April 9th at 11:30 a.m. by author, speaker, & educator, Susan Alpert and Curtis Kaiser, JD, MBA, Board Certified Estate Planning Specialist. The program is sponsored by Sharon-Carmel Hadassah and the Jewish Community Foundation and will take place at the Alpert JCC
on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. There will be a luncheon at 11:45 a.m. and the speakers will begin at 1:00 p.m. The cost of the program is $25, including lunch. Curtis and Susan’s presentation will convey relevant stories and practical tips for attendees seeking to navigate these challenges on their own or equip their loved ones to do the same. Susan will share her “Chaos to Control” approach that was developed out of her personal experience with profound loss, and her need to get through all of the red tapes, decisions and logistics which surrounds a devastating and heartbreaking experience. Curtis will share his experience both in helping
families plan for loss and assisting them to navigate their loss, and to avoid paths that can lead to compounded heartache. Susan Covell Alpert is the author of “Driving Solo: Dealing with Grief and the Business of Financial Survival” (which she wrote to prevent the chaos and anguish that she experienced when she lost her husband far too young) and “Later is Too Late” her new book which addresses how to prepare in advance for the inevitable that will someday happen to a loved one. Curits Kaiser is the founding attorney of Kaiser Law Group which, since its inception nearly a decade ago, has been helping individuals and small business owners navigate

the deep waters of estate planning. As a boutique estate planning practice, they focus on building mutual relationships with clients and their advisors rather than merely producing documents or conducting legal transactions. Kaiser Law Group pride themselves in handling the intersection
of legal and emotional or other sensitive issues that are often identified by a client’s trusted advisor. To make a reservation for April 19th, please contact Shirley Ross at (562) 4987965 or shirleyrosscpa@ verizon.net

Bring Your Child To the Seder this Passover By Rabbi Yitzchok Newman
Imagine my surprise as a Jewish dear friend p re s e n t e d the English translation of the Shma Rabbi Yitzchok to me with Newman the words he could not relate to crossed out. I would meet with this friend for a few minutes weekly to pray with Tefillin and recite the verse Shma Yisroel while reviewing some of the meaning. One day he said to me “I would appreciate saying the full English translation word for word as it would be more meaningful.” So as an educator I gave him the homework of finding
the prayer and copying the verse to say together. The next week as I entered his home he had the copy all ready for our prayer session. As he presented it to me he said, “Here it is, but I crossed out the part that does not apply to me.” He went on to say that since he had no children he took out the verse of ‘You shall teach your children diligently’. And I realized that I had been awarded the gift of a teachable moment. The concept I was going to relate to him is the basis for the Passover Haggadah, the night of the Seder. For all who conduct a Seder, the focus is on the children. The word Haggadah means “you should tell your
children”. That is the reason that the youngsters are in the spotlight Seder evening as the proceedings begin with the asking of the Four Questions by the youngest at the table. And shortly we get to the four different children. It is all about passing the story and the traditions to the younger generation to carry forward. And yet if there are no children at the table, we still recite the questions and speak about the children. Why is that? Passover celebrates freedom. And yet, we as adults are often so set in our ways and have developed our routines that we are not truly free to consider our future. We are often not even
interested in considering any changes to improve our lives. The truly free ones are the children. Their curiosity about life drives them to ask many questions and explore many avenues without inhibitions and predetermined outcomes. We as adults could use that same frame of mind to improve our lives. In education we call this characteristic lifetime learning. In Judaism, which is a religion of action, we translate that learning into active involvement in our lives – in short a Mitzvah. So, as we gather around the table this Friday evening at the Passover Seder and crunch the matzah and herbs, let’s consider using
the children metaphor as arousing our curiosity, exploring our lives, and making positive resolutions to chart a forward movement in developing our rich Jewish heritage and passing it on to the next generation. When I explained to my friend that ‘the children’ also included, even to a greater extent continuing our curiosity in our pursuit of our life journey, he nodded to tell me that he understood. He recited the Shma that day including those meaningful words and with a deeper understanding of the lesson of the prayer. Happy Passover to all! Rabbi Yitzchok Newman is the Head of School of The Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach, CA.

Message from the Executive Director
Passover is the time of year when Jews celebrate our freedom from bondage in Egypt. We not only do this through the tradition of telling the Passover story, but with our actions at the Seder table, and through the traditions that surround our preparations for the Seder. We remove all the chametz (leavened bread) from our homes, we scrub from top to bottom, we change our dishes, and we mentally prepare for the week that is to come (this year, Passover begins on the evening of March 30). These actions reflect the Torah story of the Hebrews’ preparations for the very first Seder before they were actually free. Passover, or Pesach, is as much about looking forward to what we have faith will happen, as it is about reflecting on what has already occurred. It’s about believing that even if something hasn’t yet happened, if we believe it, and can visualize and act toward making it so, then it is much more likely to become reality. As Theodor Herzl said, “Im Tirtzu Ein Zo Agada” (If you will it, it is no dream). This interpretation of Passover reflects so much of what we do here at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. As members, we learn, exercise, volunteer, and participate because we look toward the future and what is possible–possible for ourselves, possible for our children, and possible for the community. We’re always searching for ways to enrich the lives of our members and the community; to ensure that we are providing high-quality, impactful programs and events; and to imagine what our J can be next year, the year after, or even five years from now. Much of that imagining happens on our many committees, where volunteers dedicated to the J’s mission come together to ensure we’re providing for both our current and future needs. Serving on a committee gives our members the opportunity to help shape that future. Our committees range from ECE and Camp, to Membership and Marketing; from Fitness and Aquatics, to Jewish Impact and Budget/Finance. One of our core AJCC values is Leadership, in which we state the importance of valuing “the partnership of strong lay (volunteer) and professional leadership, which enables us to plan effectively and achieve our goals.” We’re so thankful for the hard work of our volunteers, because when lay leaders share their expertise and vision, together, our community becomes stronger. If you’re interested in making your own impact at the J, and helping to shape our institutional direction, please consider joining one of our committees. This Passover, I hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on your personal community impact, your vision, and how you can help make a difference in our shared future. I challenge you to dream about what is possible for yourself and for our community, and I look forward to working with you to make those dreams become reality at the AJCC, Your Center For Life. Please contact me, and we can discuss our many committee options and find the best fit for you. L’Shalom

Caring for Our Holocaust Survivors Kathryn Miles
Executive Director, Jewish Family & Children’s Service
As we observe Yom Hashoah this month, my thoughts focus immediately on the survivors of the Holocaust who our social work team has the pleasure of supporting on a daily basis. Recently I read an article reporting that 1/3
of the survivors in this country live at or below the poverty level, compared to 10% of all Americans over the age of 65. While these numbers are staggering, it is certainly representative of what we see in the small group of survivors we serve. They are still living at home, struggling financially, and finding it more and more difficult to do some of the basic activities of daily life such as cooking, cleaning,
and doing the laundry. Most no longer drive and are reliant on others for rides to medical appointments and the grocery store. Some are dependent upon their children for round-the-clock care while others have no family to provide assistance and thus rely on government programs. I am gratified that JFCS is in the position to provide support for these individuals including
in-home care, transportation to appointments, medical equipment, and grocery store gift cards. Our social work team also helps coordinate needed services by providing case management. We are able to offer this muchneeded support because of grant funding we receive through The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. This year JFCS received an increase
in funding because of the growing physical and cognitive challenges that are facing the survivors we serve. While it can never assuage or repair the suffering they endured, we at JFCS feel privileged to be in the position of supporting this beloved group, and helping them age with dignity.
Take a Stand on Mental Health: Move with Us on May 6! Race With A View 2018 is just a few weeks away, and with it, the month of May is recognized by Mental Health America as National Mental Health Awareness month. This year, Mental Health America has chosen a theme of “Whole Body Mental Health” as its awareness campaign theme, hoping to increase understanding of how the body’s various systems impact mental health based on recent research. What could be more perfect as a backdrop for a 5k/10k run or walk along our beautiful downtown Shoreline Village, otherwise known as Race With A View 2018? Healthy bodies, healthy minds! Under several different names, JFCS and its supporters have been moving for mental health for 30 years. What began as
an effort by a small group of JFCS volunteers to fund a counseling program for children in 1988 has grown into an opportunity to make a statement on the importance of access to professional, affordable counseling and support for everyone in our community while supporting Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Long Beach. Year after year, participants have faithfully supported Race With A View (RWAV). Liz Sharzer is a great example, having participated as a runner, fundraiser, and also a volunteer. “There is no place I’d rather be on a sunny May morning than at RWAV. Hundreds of runners and walkers come together at the beach to raise funds for those in our community who are struggling. Everyone there is smiling, happy to be part of this wonderful event,” says Liz.
In addition to the beautiful waterfront setting, KROQ will be “in the house” again this year to fill the air with energizing music as a prelude to the festivities at the starting line. Elex Michaelson, morning anchor at Fox 11 News, will be on hand as our emcee, breaking news notwithstanding, while JFCS volunteer Elena Feldman will lead our pre-race stretching. Runners and walkers will enjoy the mellow tunes of the Jazz Angels as they stroll or jog past the Nautilus band shell area on Rainbow Lagoon. Opportunity drawings have become a tradition with Race With A View, and this year is no exception. “Staycation With A View” will feature a 2-night stay at the Hotel Maya with choice of dinner or brunch in Fuego, the signature restaurant. Also included in the package is

Celebrating Discovery
For days, the excitement was building. Whether one encountered a first grader or a second grader at Hebrew Academy Orange County (HAOC), one could gain a palpable sense of excitement. These students were anticipating celebrations of receiving key Jewish books. For the first grade students, their celebration centered around receiving a siddur, a Jewish prayer book. Of course, the reception of their own personal siddur was not
simply a physical acquisition, but also a celebration of their mastering the pronunciation of even some of the most complicated words in Hebrew. For the rest of the day, the children could not be parted from their new siddurim. They clung to them, and quietly read the words inside to themselves even while the teacher tried to move on to other interesting Judaic topics. Like the Jews receiving the Torah on Mt. Sinai, the
18 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |
children of second grade received a copy of the first book of the Chumash in Hebrew, the first of the five books of the Torah, as they each walked up to the front of the stage to receive it. The celebration signified the commencement of the children’s’ new journey through the beauty of Torah study in its original text. Both ceremonies were held at HAOC, on the Norton and Sylvia Alevy Campus, with the students performing songs and performance in both English and Hebrew. As part of demonstrating their mastery of the material, the first graders recited some prayers, while second graders read some of the weekly Torah reading. Following the second graders’ Chumash Party, a rare opportunity was afforded them – each child got to release a white rock dove. The dove releasing was meant to symbolize the Jewish people’s connection to their roots wherever they may be through the lessons of the Torah. The children were now beginning their involvement in their future endeavor in the study of the Chumash. The significance of these two ceremonies for these HAOC students is no small one, as the school seeks to instill in them not only a great love for their Jewish involvement, but supplying them with the tools for understanding and using basic Jewish texts from a young age. Students at the Academy are prepared through their comprehensive education in general and Judaic studies to become the future leadership in shaping the future of the Jewish community.

Preschoolers Prepare for Passover with Seder Have you ever learned something backwards before? That’s just what students did at the Hebrew Academy Preschool: going through a practice seder, followed by learning about it. A couple of weeks prior to Passover, the students were introduced to Passover, yielding many, many questions. The purpose of beginning learning Passover with a seder was to enhance the children’s Passover experience. Being able to experience the sights, sounds, smells, touch, and tastes of the seder made Passover so much more real for the children. When we spoke about all of the concepts at the seder and created our haggadahs, the children were able to process the information fully, because they were experiencing everything firsthand. “This is our responsibility as parents, to teach our kids the culture and traditions,” said Chanie Perelmuter, director of the Hebrew Academy Preschool. “If we don’t teach it to the children, then how will it pass from generation to generation? We need to teach it to the children because they are the guarantors of the story.” As part of the practice seder, the students explored the seder with songs, arts and crafts. Their singing included practicing asking the four questions in both Hebrew and English. The practice seder, in addition to jump-starting their interest in the curriculum, also served to familiarize the students with the seder for when they celebrate the sedarim with family and friends.
Students at The Hebrew Academy’s Preschool were able to experience a practice Passover seder, preparing them for traditions and customs associated with the holiday, which will stay with each child forever.
While the students were confronted with a lot of practices, questions, and more, they also got to enjoy the flavors of the seder. Here are a few of the many examples of which tastes our students enjoyed the most: • Drinking the sedergrape juice • The egg dipped in saltwater • I liked the salad. And I really liked the matzah. Not the other things • The marror • I liked everything except the marror If you would like to learn more about the Hebrew Academy Preschool, please call Chanie Perelmuter at (714) 898-0051.
