Jerusalem
In 2018, Israel will celebrate her 70th birthday. One of the best ways to celebrate Israel is to go there. Below are several opportunities for members of our community to connect to Israel, to travel in the footsteps of our ancestors and to explore the wonder that is modern Israel.* Community Trips Jewish Federation Mission to Israel – October 19-26, 2017 There is still time to be part of this fall’s Jewish Federation Mission to Israel. Join with other community members to experience Masada, the Dead Sea, Yad Vashem, a helicopter ride to the Golan Heights, an IDF military base, a winery, a whiskey distillery tour, high-tech visit in Beer Sheva, an exclusive evening at the Jerusalem Press Club and much more. There is also an option for a 2 day extension to Eilat and Petra, Jordan. For more information, contact Danny Levy at the Jewish Federation, dlevy@jewishlongbeach.org. Temple Beth David Temple Beth David invites everyone to celebrate Israel’s 70th birthday and learn how it is the birthplace of the three major world religions on their trip (April 12-22, 2018). The trip will be led by Rabbi Nancy Myers. For details, visit templebethdavid.org. Temple Israel Temple Israel invites you to experience the Miracle that is Israel, with their Family Trip (June 24-July 6, 2018) with Rabbi Steven Moskowitz. “For thousands of years, the land of Israel has been for the Jewish people a dreamscape, a land of promise. Today it is a living dynamic reality: a place of rebirth for a language, a people, and a magnificent heritage. I invite you to join us on this extraordinary journey. This trip is open to all, so please feel free to invite friends and family,” says Rabbi Moskowitz. For more information and itinerary details, please visit www.tilb.org. Community Trip with AJCC & Jewish Federation Prague, Vienna, Budapest & IsraelOctober 14-28, 2018 This is a journey through the great cities of Europe: Prague, Vienna, and Budapest, and then to Israel – to explore the rich Jewish life in Europe prior to the Holocaust and the resurgence of Jewish life in those communities today. Continuing into Israel, travelers will appreciate the strong emphasis of European Jewry on the State and visiting sites of both ancient and modern Israel. In Israel, there will be options to choose from that will meet the needs of both first timers and repeat travelers. There is also the option of attending the Jewish Federation of North America’s General Assembly, which is an international gathering with prominent speakers and sessions focused on important world events. There will also be some unique women’s only activities. The first information meeting for this trip will be in early September of 2017. Behind-the-Scenes: Federation’s Staff Spotlight The Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County would like to give thanks to our diligent staffer for her ten years of service: Amy Levenstein-Pulido. Amy serves in the position as Campaign Associate/PJ Libary Associate. Amy grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York. She mentions, “If you grew up Jewish in New York, it was part of your everyday norm and you just knew it. We were not a religious family, but my brothers were Bar Mitzvah’d and I attended Hebrew school.” For college, she attended the City University of New York at
Brooklyn College and holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in economics, with a minor in accounting. Amy found her way to California when her dad, who had moved here in 1983, became very ill and was hospitalized. She left her belongings and job at the American Physical Society behind, for family always come first. Amy decided to stay in Southern California where she found the love of her life, got married, and became a stay-at-home mom. When she was looking for a preschool for her children, a friend mentioned the

Jewish Community Center. Since then, Amy has made the newly named Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC) on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus her second home. All of her children have graduated from
the AJCC’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program. Because Amy spent so much time here, she eventually was offered an Assistant Reading Teacher position with the ECE. When her last child had graduated from the ECE program, she decided it was time to take a job with adults and came across a job posting for “Accounting” with the Jewish Federation. Amy applied and has been here since August 2006. Amy loves reporting on donor trends and communicating with the many constituents. Amy says, “We have so many wonderful and varied members of this
community. It is always nice to learn new things about the people who drive the Jewish Federation.” Amy’s favorite event is Super Sunday, because “it is an eventful day, attended by many community members who really want to make a difference in the lives of Jews. It is informal, and of course, we are happy to provide food!” Amy has been married for over 25 years to Humberto Pulido. They have four beautiful daughters: Arielle, Hannah, Rebekah, and Sarah.

Jewish Community Foundation OF GREATER LONG BEACH & WEST ORANGE COUNTY
ENSURE OUR FUTURE Jewish Community Foundation 2017 Grant Awards By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development
2017 Grant Award Recipients Alpert Jewish Community Center (Alpert JCC) The Alpert JCC received a grant to re-establish the Shabbaton Weekend for young adults. This program will be offered in conjunction with the existing Gesher City Program (young adults 21-35). Young adults will be able to reconnect with their Jewish identity, enhance their connections to the Jewish community, and build future Jewish leaders. Without this connection, Jewish individuals are likely to separate from the community, become unaffiliated and possibly lose Judaism as part of their adult lives.
Vice President Robin Harrison (left) and President Eric Schiffer (center) from Temple Beth David received a grant check from Sherri Selmanson, Chair of the Jewish Community Foundation’s Grants Committee (right).
Programs to engage teens and young adults, leadership training, interfaith programs, and assisting students with special needs... These are among the range of projects receiving grants this year from the Jewish Community Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund (please see sidebar).
and their recommendations are then approved by the Foundation Board. In addition to Chair, Sherri Selmanson, the members of the Foundation Grants Committee included: Karen Codman, Joyce Feldman, Rosecarrie Brooks, Melissa Carr-Kreitenberg, Helen Rosenberg, and Nicole Honigman. The goal is to strengthen our Jewish Community by providing funds for projects that: meet emergency situations; establish innovative or experimental new programs; assure provision of quality Jewish education; enhance the provision of health and social services; recruit and train volunteer and professional leadership; and establish programs which maintain and strengthen Jewish identity, commitment and continuity.
“The Foundation Grants Committee is pleased that we were once again able to give Jewish organizations a chance to receive small grants to enhance their programs,” said Sherri Selmanson, Chair of the Foundation Grants Committee. “If all of us participate in the Foundation, our funds will grow and more money will be available for community grants. I invite everyone to learn how easy it is to open a Donor Advised Fund or leave a bequest in your will or trust so that we The role of the Foundation can continue to strengthen our is to assist individuals, entire community.” organizations, and various Jewish agencies in fulfilling Granting Process their missions today, and for Grant applications are sent the future. The Foundation to all local Jewish agencies accomplishes this goal and organizations. The through the development and requests are reviewed by the management of permanent Foundation Grants Committee endowment funds, lifetime

For over 40 years the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County has been partnering with donors and community organizations to help them meet their individual philanthropic goals, while ensuring the future of the vibrant network of programs and services provided by our communal agencies. Beach Hillel In order to build a stronger commitment to Hillel and the Jewish people, Hillel will be creating a Leadership Retreat. The Leadership Retreat will take up to 15 Jewish student leaders away for the weekend to work on skills that will help build a stronger Jewish community on campus. Skills learned at the retreat will focus on coalition building, understanding Student Body Government, and ways to increase involvement on campus regarding Israel advocacy. The Hebrew Academy The Hebrew Academy received a grant to help support struggling students in need of behavioral support. They plan to hire a licensed behavior specialist. This will enhance the quality of health and social services at a Jewish Day School. The behavioral specialist will help train teachers to attend to the needs of the struggling students, who require close attention, while also effectively meeting the needs of the rest of the class. The grant from the Jewish Community Foundation will help provide oversight of this specialist. Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) JFCS received funds that would allow staff to work with a professional who would help guide them in creating an agenda for a Board retreat. The retreat will be geared toward increasing the Board’s capacity to effectively plan for growth, governance and fundraising on behalf of their organization. Continuing to build skills in these areas is key to ensuring the long term sustainability of JFCS and will allow them to provide much needed services. Temple Beth David Temple Beth David received a grant for teens to participate in the Audre Rapoport L’Taken Social Justice Seminar, in Washington, D.C. This seminar allows teens (after the completion of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah) the opportunity to learn about, share, and formulate perspectives on social action and justice. The teens will be also given the privilege of addressing their views before an audience of legislators on Capitol Hill. Temple Israel Temple Israel received a grant for a Teen Interfaith Panel and Lunch Program that would promote understanding and acceptance of other faiths, encourage new friendships, and create a greater sense of community. Teens would be able to learn about each other by identifying similarities and appreciating differences.

The Lesson of Cold Air
R E F L E C T I O N S
By Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfarb
One of the dangers of our modern society is separation and isolation from the world around us. We cocoon o u rselves Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfarb in modern day structures: temperature controlled homes, safety-cage enclosed automobiles, workspace offices and cubicles. Our interactions with our fellow human beings now have many barriers between us and direct contact with those with whom we communicate. Not that any of this is inherently bad, but living in such isolation and separation does bring consequences. Living our sheltered, modern life, makes it easier for us to ignore the serious issues we face. Global warming becomes easier to dismiss when we can sleep comfortably in our air-conditioned houses
and “labor” in air-conditioned spaces. Homelessness is easier to ignore from the comfort of our enclosed vehicles. Hunger is something that happens in other countries, as we raid our stocked cupboards for a late night snack. Sadly, for many of us living in this cocoon of isolation, we’ve become like Pharaoh of ancient Egypt - our hearts are hardened. The Divine in us, empathy, compassion, and mercy, lies buried under layers of comfort, security, and excess and prevents us from acting. There is a famous story about Rabbi Israel Salanter, who founded the Musar movement in the nineteenth century to increase the moral sensitivity of people. During one of Lithuania’s freezing winters, his yeshiva had no money to buy fuel and the students had to study in the numbing cold. Early one morning, dressed in a warm winter coat, Rabbi Israel went to the home
of a wealthy, but not very philanthropic householder. Still in his dressing gown, the man invited the Rabbi in, but the Rabbi remained in the doorway - seemingly unaware that the householder was shivering from the cold. There, the Rabbi began a lengthy Talmudic discourse. Thinking he was about to faint from the cold, the man finally interrupted the Rabbi and persuaded him to enter his home. As they warmed themselves before the fire, Rabbi Israel continued, “I am sure that you are wondering about my strange conduct at your doorway. The students of our beit midrash are freezing; we need money for fuel. If I had asked you to help while you were warm and comfortable, you would not have even begun to understand what it means to study in an unheated room. Now that you feel what they feel, I turn to you and ask that you help us.” Indeed, the
wealthy man provided the fuel for the beit midrash as long as he lived. Giving Tzedakah rekindles the Divine in us, our empathy, compassion, and mercy and breaks us out of our cocoon of comfort, security and excess. The very act reminds us of our duty as partners with God in the process of creation; we are but caretakers in this life and we are all called upon to do our part to make this world, at least our little corner of it, a better place. May we all have the strength to learn the lesson of “cold air” and rekindle in our hearts the Divine. L’Shalom, Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfarb is the Rabbi of Temple Beth Ohr in La Mirada. He is a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and a Board Member of Neshamah: Association of Jewish Chaplains. He received his ordination from HUC-JIR in 1991 and his Doctorate of Divinity (h.c.) from HUC-JIR in 2016.

AJCC STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Around the J
Message from the Executive Director
I grew up close to the Alpert Jewish Community Center—first in Lakewood, then Cerritos. I went to a good public school, my family attended a local synagogue, and I participated in youth sports, cub scouts, and more. But when I think back, the place I remember feeling most comfortable and welcome as a child was our JCC. A home-away-from-home, my parents knew I’d be safe at the J. My experience helped reinforce our own family’s values, and I made life-long friendships that I still cherish. Whether learning to swim, running through the halls (yes, I was one of those kids), developing new skills in preschool, or making new friends at camp—the JCC provided a “neighborhood” where I felt cared for and secure, and I hope that our J provides you with such a feeling. I also hope that you are taking advantage of our wonderful summer offerings! This month, our Summer of Fun continues with Tuesday Nights at the Pool, Thursday Pizza Nights, Free Sunday Afternoons at the Movies with a fun activity that goes along with each film, another Shabbat at the Pool, and Member Appreciation Days where our Member Relations team give out free goodies. And you won’t want to miss our fabulous end-of-summer Member Appreciation Barbeque on August 15! This is a really nice way to connect with other members and just have a great time. There are pictures on our Facebook page from the June event--take a look and join us on August 15 at 5:30pm. We will also be having our third annual family Tu B’Av dinner and dance on Thursday, August 17. The entertaining evening will include dinner, music, face painting, and arts & crafts. Last year’s dance was a huge success, and I look forward to seeing you there! Construction on our new roof is moving along nicely. We will be starting the third phase—solar panels in the parking lot—on August 22. We know there might be some inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding. Letters will be sent out keeping you up to date. Whether it’s providing seniors with a cool, friendly spot away from the heat, assisting a new preschool family in making friends, or making certain our members feel secure after a bomb threat—none of it would be possible without you. Your participation in and commitment to our diverse community ensures that our J remains that special place in Long Beach that is warm and inclusive to all faiths, ages, and cultures. Thank you for helping us to remain Your Center For Life!

Kedma Cantor
ECE Assistant Director of Operations Even if you don’t get back to our preschool very often, you have likely seen Kedma Cantor offering challah baking workshops, hanging out by the pool with her kids, or even upstairs at the gym. Her friendly face, warm smile, and vast array of hats, are always a welcome sight. Kedma is from Manitoba, Canada, which, she explains, “is in the prairies. We have three months of 20 below weather. It’s quite a change from Long Beach! “I stayed in Manitoba through college, where I got a bachelor’s degree in Political Studies with a minor in Judaism. I met my husband (Rabbi David Cantor) when I was 16 years old, and we got married in 1994, when I was 24. We moved to California so we could go to school at the University of Judaism (now American Jewish University) in 1995. I got two degrees while I was there. A BA in Hebrew Letters and an MA in Education. “I had my first son in 1998,” Kedma continues, “and we moved to Israel for a year for David’s rabbinic program, and I got to practice my Hebrew! I really enjoyed that. We came back to California to finish his schooling and then moved back to Canada. I have moved 13 times since I have been married! It’s the life of a rabbi. We have lived in Maine, Connecticut, Tennessee, Manitoba, and then back to California four years ago for David’s job at Temple Beth Shalom. I hope we’ll be staying here. I love it, and the weather is definitely better than in Canada!” Kedma has been a Jewish educator for over 20 years and has worked with all ages, from babies all the way up to senior citizens. Before she came to the AJCC, she had been both Assistant Director and Director at other Jewish schools: “I started working at the JCC in Winnipeg and worked with children with special needs. That’s a specialty of mine--physical and intellectual special needs. I worked in Pre-K, so when we came to Long Beach four years ago, we came for a tour of the entire JCC. I fell in love with what a great facility we have here. I was very impressed with a few things. The first is that there is a lot of longevity: some of the staff have been here for more than 20 years. That says a lot about a place. “I also really appreciated that we offer chugim (the enrichment programs)— we offer 25 different programs during the week! I had never seen that before. It is a huge undertaking. The chugim range from sewing to science and from cooking to Zen. It’s very cool. We also have a Spanish program and use Hebrew in the classroom, which is great because studies have shown that the more languages you are exposed to when you are young, the better it is for your brain and later development. And I love the fact that we take the preschool and camp kids to the pool in the summer. I had never seen that at the other JCCs I worked at. I think that’s just fantastic. “So I applied to work at the ECE, and they said yes! I started as a teacher’s aide and then started subbing and then I became the interim Assistant Director, and eventually moved into my current position as Assistant Director of Operations. I like my job because I get to work with everyone in ECE: the staff, the kids, and the parents. I really enjoy that aspect of it.” Working at the AJCC is a perfect fit for Kedma. “My passion,” she explains, “is Judaism—everything about it. Living it and teaching it. I love to bake and I especially love to bake challah. I have done a number of workshops on challah baking as well workshops on Jewish cooking from the Bible. I’ve also done a lot of different lectures and programs over the years. I like teaching about the colors of Judaism and the colors of the Bible, and I really like teaching about tallisim (Jewish prayer shawls) and why they are important to the Jews. “I also really like the opportunities I have working here: I have four children (the youngest is 11 and the eldest is 19), and they like to come to Tuesday Nights at the Pool; I take advantage of the Fitness Center (as hard as that is sometimes); and I love that I get the opportunity to teach here and get involved with educational training. I could work at any preschool, but it’s the Jewish part that’s really important to me.” - Interview by Erika Hillinger

Alpert JCC Jewish Festival
The heat didn’t bother anyone at the Alpert JCC Jewish Festival held on Sunday, June 25, 2017; they were having too much fun! The Alpert JCC was abuzz with activity and the sounds of laughter and excitement as young and old alike enjoyed samplings of our Jewish traditions: matzah ball soup, lox and bagels, kugel, Jewish gifts and jewelry, and even Israeli dancing. In addition, Rabbi Engel taught the traditional practice of tefillin wrapping (quite educational!), and Kedma Cantor, the J’s Assistant Director of Operations for ECE (see article this issue), taught the art of challah making. In addition to the Jewish Festival, the building was busy with a community-wide open house, a silent art auction, building and preschool tours, special membership rates for on-the-spot signups, basketball registration, and a Swima-thon to Israel to help raise funds for the Jr. Swim Team! Visitors and members alike had a great time as they learned a little bit about all the great things the J has to offer. There was henna body painting, swimming, a BBQ on the pool deck, arts & crafts, cookie decorating, and face painting. Something for everyone! The entire day was free and open to the community, and members had an excellent opportunity to bring guests and show off what a great place we have here. It was very exciting to see visitors from all over Long Beach enjoying the pool, learning a little about Jewish culture, watching a martial arts demo, or even participating in a free fitness class. According to one of the J’s new members, “One of the best things about the day for me was watching the children delight in getting their faces painted or splashing around in the pool. The kids are just so precious. And it’s great they’re so involved. They are the future!” Another visitor commented, “Who knew there was so much here?! The pool is fantastic! And there’s so much diversity. I’m definitely coming back with my niece and nephews, and I hope they’ll sign up for camp. That just looks like it’s a blast.” If you missed this year’s Jewish Festival/Open House, we hope to do it again next year. And everyone can check out the pictures on Facebook! In the meantime, don’t miss the Member Appreciation BBQ on August 15. The kugel may not be there, but the ruach (spirit) will! - Written by Erika Hillinger Please go to www.alpertjcc.org or www.Facebook.com/alpertjcc for more info.

RUNWAY: At Every Age
SEPT.14, 2017
SAVE THE DATE! “Whether a woman is in her 30s or 80s, tall or short, large or petite, everyone can wear fashion trends in flattering ways,” states Wendy Manasse Wiese, creator and producer of RUNWAY: At Every Age, to be held on September 14 at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. This year’s theme will showcase professional and selected volunteer models from our community on the runway modelling the latest in fashion
for the fall season. “RUNWAY is about so much more than fashion... it’s about the beauty of helping others.” she added. The event supports Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Long Beach & West Orange County, whose programs and services are available for everyone in the area, regardless of religion, ethnicity, national origin, socioeconomic status, disability, or sexual orientation. New to the RUNWAY experience, is a pre-RUNWAY
fashion event for all sponsors. In addition, each sponsor will have a reserved seats for themselves and their guests. “We are hoping to encourage more people to become sponsors of the event by adding these additional benefits,” said Wiese. One of the signature features of RUNWAY is the New York Experience opportunity drawing. This year there will be two lucky winners, and only 200 tickets will be sold. Each winner and the guest of his/her choice
will fly to New York for two nights, and visit one of Hearst Magazines’ premiere fashion titles—Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, or Marie Claire. The winners will see the production floor and will also visit the fashion closet. Lunch in the exclusive employee café and a visit to the Good Housekeeping Institute’s research center, also located in Hearst Tower, are included in this priceless experience. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Promenade, with wine, a signature cocktail, and a variety of fresh, delicious salads created by TGIS Catering and Events. At Every Age begins at 6:30 p.m., and the evening will conclude with the drawing of two lucky winners for the
New York Experience. Tickets for the event may be purchased on the website at www.jfcsrunway.com or by phone at (562) 427-7916.

Your Children Are in Good Hands with Our Winning Team
The Hebrew Academy Preschool has been awarded the ‘Quality In Early Childhood Outstanding Center Award’ by the Orange County Association for the Education of Young Children (OCAEYC). The OCAEYC is the local affiliate of the National Association of the Education of Young Children and is the largest organization of its kind in the country, whose mission is to support early childhood professionals in their work with children
from birth through age eight, as well as to advocate for higher standards of quality education and to promote public understanding of the issues affecting children and their families. The Hebrew Academy’s Preschool Director, Chanie Perelmuter, says, “We are thrilled to accept this award. We know we have a highly successful studentcentered program, but it’s always a proud moment to be recognized by the educational establishment.”
Children at The Hebrew Academy Preschool receive the highest quality wellrounded education. The Preschool is rated #1 in our area, receiving a 5 star rating on the Quality Start OC’s Quality Rating & Improvement System (QRIS) program that is part of the OC Department of Education’s preschool quality rating system. Chanie is proud to have been part of the QRIS program since its inception. Another honor recently was awarded to two Preschool teachers for their excellence in early childhood education. Lisa Haley of the 3rd grade class and Raizel Weinbaum of the PreK class each received recognitions
through a special grant from the Pretend City’s Children Museum. We are particularly proud of Raizel Weinbaum, who is an alum of the school. Our teachers are on the forefront of educational practices through continuing education including regularly attending education conferences. As an exemplary program, the preschool is consistently on a cycle of improvement. By allowing students to learn through handson exploration activities, The Hebrew Academy has intentionally designed an innovative and equitybased learning curriculum. Our teachers recognize that our children’s different backgrounds and living
experiences mean that they do not learn the same things at the same time in the same manner. The Abecedarian Project Study supports this notion with their report that children in quality preschool programs are less likely to repeat grades, need special education, or get into future trouble with the law. Having a staff environment of respectful and loving teachers nurtures children to develop a healthy self image and long lasting friendships with each other. For more information about the early childhood program, please contact our award winning director Chani Perelmuter at (714) 863-0757 ext. 204 or cperelmuter@hacds.org.
