FEATURE STORY
In Support of Israel By Danny Levy, Director of Development
A portion of the dollars raised here at home through the Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign goes to support Jews and non-Jews in Israel, fulfilling our global responsibility for tikkun olam. You are part of something powerful. Below is a glimpse of what we do in Israel.
Since 1929, The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) has been working to secure a vibrant Jewish future. They connect the global Jewish family, bringing Jews to Israel and Israel to Jews, by providing meaningful Israel engagement and facilitating Aliyah (immigration to Israel). JAFI connects Jews with their heritage and our collective future. A recent JAFI project has created a social hub in the Negev Desert city of Arad, harnessing the passion of young idealists in the creation of community. Hamitham, the new young adults’ social hub was established to stimulate cultural activity in Arad and to encourage young Israelis to build a Young Community in Arad and the Negev. The Jewish Agency transformed its Yafit Absorption Center campus into a facility where enthusiastic young Israelis, aged 20-35, live in subsidized housing for up to three years. They volunteer within Arad, pioneering new social and cultural opportunities for all residents of the city. Today, almost 70 young people live on the campus, and organize city events for festivals, theater performances, recreational activities, and other programs that enhance the social quality of life.
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization. JDC has exemplified that all Jews are responsible for one another and for improving the well-being of vulnerable people around the world. JDC created Kidum, new paths for the working poor, a professional development and career advancement program—part of Tevet, the JDCGovernment of Israel partnership to promote employment across the country. program helps through a series of personal meetings, scholarships, and individualized motivating conversations. Kidum focuses on lowincome workers who have held jobs for at least 18 months of the last two years. Working oneon-one with employment counselors, participants aim to boost their salary, improve their hours and work conditions, find satisfying and meaningful work, and develop new professional skills.
World ORT Kadima Mada (ORT) initiates, develops and implements advanced learning and teaching programs in Israel’s formal and informal education systems to ensure that today’s students acquire 21st century skills. These
programs integrate advanced educational technologies developed in Israel and around the world and include problem solving, team work, digital orientation, and creative thinking. “Pedagogical Innovation” educational programs are implemented mainly in the 34 ORT-affiliated schools in the geographic and social peripheries of Israel that include the different populations that form the social-cultural mosaic that is Israel. Serving Druze, Christian and Muslim Arabs, Circassians, secular and observant Jews, veteran Israelis and new immigrants, ORT’s programs reach students of all ages from early childhood to academia, through kindergarten, primary school, junior and senior high, technological colleges and vocational training for adults.

Shabbat Meals on Wheels For a second year, Women’s Philanthropy is inviting the community to participate in a community wide Tzedakah Project. The program, Shabbat Meals on Wheels (SMOW), will provide hot, Kosher, Shabbat dinner to people who would treasure a Shabbat meal. Those eligible to receive a meal include the elderly, those with a financial or emotional need, or someone who recently arrived home from the hospital and is unable to prepare their own Shabbat meal. The co-chairs for this project are Alicia Friedmann and Wendy Manasse Wiese. Alicia states, “I am excited to be co-chairing SMOW again this year. It feels so wonderful to deliver these meals to homes throughout our area. SMOW is truly an event that brings our community together through giving and receiving. Wendy adds on, “I am super excited to co-chair another Shabbat Meals on Wheels with Alicia! I love all the community participation and it’s such a mitzvah.” We have scheduled the first delivery of meals for Friday, October 5, 2018. If you have names of people who would benefit from receiving a meal or would like to help volunteer with this project, email Sharon Kenigsberg: sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org.

Answers to Your Frequently Asked Questions
How do I leave a gift for a charitable organization that I admire? It’s easy. You can arrange for a gift in several ways, the most common being through a charitable gift in a will or a living trust. Many people set aside a certain dollar amount. Others leave a percentage of their estate, or any assets left over after they have provided for their family. Others leave a paid-up life insurance policy, retirement account, or other financial investment. Must I have an estate in order to leave a legacy? Everyone can leave a legacy. “Estate” is simply a word used to describe any money, property, or personal belongings that you own at the time of your death. Most people leave an estate when they pass away, even though they may not have a great deal of wealth. Even modest gifts are appreciated Every gift goes a long way. When should I start to think about leaving a legacy?
The answer is different for each individual. Some people make their wills when they have a first child, or when they receive an inheritance. But don’t put it off-- the time is always right to think about how you wish to be remembered by your loved ones and community. Why should I consider leaving a legacy? Consider the institutions and causes you support now. Why have you made gifts of money and time? Picture your Jewish community decades from now. What would you hope to see? Through your legacy, you can ensure that the organizations you care about thrive in perpetuity and the issues you are most concerned with continue to be addressed. Who will receive my legacy? All qualified, tax-exempt institutions are appropriate beneficiaries. Organizations you have supported in your life are natural choices. Help keep the Jewish community
strong by considering your synagogue, federation, Jewish day school or other Jewish group. You may wish to target fields of interests such as Jewish education, care for the elderly, or social services in Israel. You can also support organizations in the general community that have touched your life. Consider designating a share of your legacy as unrestricted by including your Jewish community’s Unrestricted Endowment. While some issues remain constant, priorities can shift in sudden and unexpected ways. This is an excellent way to express your trust in future community leaders. Do I tell the charity that I’ve left a gift? That is up to you. Charities often like to know in advance so that they can recognize your generosity. They can also tell you about specific opportunities for giving. How can I invite my children into the process? You should engage your children in every step of the legacy planning process. Here are some suggestions: • Gather your family members together to discuss about your charitable givings and values. • Together, visit any of the institutions, programs, and services you are committed to supporting. • Listen, acknowledge, and dialogue amongst one another about possible concerns.
How can my legacy inspire the community? The legacy planning process can build bonds with your partners in your community. It is truly a way to let your name be remembered as a blessing. Your promise to provide for the Jewish community after your lifetime makes you eligible to have your name displayed on the Jewish Community Foundation’s Legacy Wall proudly displayed in the Lentzner Family Promenade at the Alpert JCC. How can I make sure that my legacy reflects what is important to me? The Jewish Community Foundation is here to be your resource. We can meet with you before you meet with your advisors to brainstorm initial ideas and goals. In future years, we can help involve your children and grandchildren in carrying out your legacy. How can the Foundation work with my professional advisors? We can work with you and your professional advisors to plan your gift in a way that furthers your unique financial and charitable goals. We are available to meet and consult with your advisors throughout the process. How should I fund my legacy? With the help of the Jewish Community Foundation and your professional advisors, you will carefully choose the source of your dollars to help fund your legacy. Examples
include retirement funds, highly-appreciated stock and real estate. How should I structure my legacy? Depending on your goals, your legacy can be structured in the way that is most advantageous for you. You, your spouse and family members can receive income for life through charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts. Or your legacy can be a simple bequest in your will or from your IRA. What is the difference between a bequest and an endowment? A bequest is a legacy gift, distributed from the donor’s estate after the end of his or her life. If not designated, it can be spent in the year that it is captured. An endowment is a permanent fund that is held in perpetuity, distributing a specified percentage annually to the designated purpose. For example, a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) and Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE) are funds that are held by the foundation and distributed each year to the Annual Campaign. An endowment can be established by bequest or during the donor’s life. How can I get started? Please contact Sharon Kenigsberg at the Jewish Community Foundation at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008 to set up your confidential appointment.

Forgiveness is Hard but so Necessary By Rabbi Nancy Rita Myers
A rabbi delivered a sermon one morning about the importance of forgiving one’s enemy. Immediately afterwards, he asked, “How Rabbi Nancy many of you Rita Myers are willing to forgive your enemies?” About half held up their hands. Not satisfied, he repeated his question. This time, he received a response of about 80 percent. Still unconvinced, he asked again. With all thoughts now on lunch, everyone raised their hands except one elderly lady in the rear. “Mrs. Cohen, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?” the rabbi wearily inquired. “I don’t have any,”
she replied. “Mrs. Cohen, that is very unusual. How old are you?” “Ninety three,” she asserted. “Mrs. Cohen, please come down in front and tell the congregation how a person can live to be ninety-three, and not have an enemy in the world.” The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, very slowly turned around, and said, “It’s easy, I just outlived the bastards.” We are now in the Hebrew month of Elul, and this is the time of preparing for our High Holy Days. Forgiving and asking for forgiveness are essential themes of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Maimonides, a great sage who lived in the Middle Ages, wrote “It is forbidden for a person to be cruel and refuse to be appeased. Rather, he should be easily pacified, but hard
to anger. When the person who wronged him asks for forgiveness, he should forgive him with a complete heart and a willing spirit. Even if he aggravated and wronged him severely, he should not seek revenge or bear a grudge.” Maimonides teaches the importance of forgiveness. However, letting go of our disappointment, anger, hurt, and pain can at times feel impossible. I have struggled with it for years. On my mother’s side of the family, people keep grudges for decades. Yikes! I have found though if I can understand the other person’s pain, grief, insecurity, and fear; it is much easier to let things roll off my back. I ask myself what challenges is the other person facing? Could they be having a hard time at work, in school, with their family, or significant
other? When I’m able to see the person as one who is also struggling, I’m less likely to be offended or wounded by their words or actions. I’ve found that with compassion, it is easier to be appeased. So if I were to ask you, “How many of you are willing to forgive your enemies.” How would you respond? Maybe we can consider it for the sake of our health, well-being, family, and friendship circle. Selicha, forgiveness, is hard. It’s hard to let go but often we have to. We can’t wait to outlive our adversaries; instead we can try to live and let live. With an open heart, an openness for selicha, we can move on to a new stage of relating to others and living our lives fully. Rabbi Myers is the rabbi of Beth David in Westminster, CA located centrally in Orange County.

According to Jewish law in the Talmud (Kiddushin 29a), a parent must teach their child three things: Torah, how to earn a living, and how to swim. Through our program, the AJCC can help you give your child the swimming skills they need with the pricing and flexibility that works for your modern life. Whether they choose to learn in a group or private setting, our instructors teach swimmers the skills they need to keep them safe in and around the water.

The Best in Preschool: Hebrew Academy Hits it Home!
The end of the preschool year is always full of excitement, sticky hands, and colorful smiles. The Hebrew Academy Preschool culminates the end of year with a staged performance
by nearly all classrooms at the school. The children have been preparing for the performance for weeks, they know the music and songs by heart, and they are ready to show off their talents. Parents eagerly await their child’s moment, poised with video cameras, phones, iPads. Literally anything that will keep this moment preserved for decades to come. Preschool Director Chanie Perelmuter MCs the event, “The goal is for the kids to get on the stage, that’s it,” she reminds the parents. “Anything else is icing on
the cake.” And she means it. Coming from an extensive career in the classroom, she knows what the parents want to see but she also knows exactly what the children need to learn in this exercise. Perelmuter has built an amazing center teaching children all about how they learn best. The play-based learning center has countless opportunities for the children to explore their surroundings. At the crux of many programs is helping kids learn how to take turns, sharing, problem solve with peers, dealing with frustration or disappointment
Reaching Greater Heights in Education
This past school year was one for the record books for the Hebrew Academy with many innovative programs that netted impressive results. From our students designing and launching rockets on campus, launching a new e-based learning curriculum, to one of our students receiving a national award in Washington D.C. for his personal essay. In her year-end report, Dr. Bryn Harari, Hebrew Academy’s principal, notes that the “Academic rigor
and cutting-edge practice in education are key to our success, but the personal relationships are at the core of everything we do - and that’s what makes our community so strong! Leveraging the Judaic studies to teach the highest level of critical thinking, we guide students in authentic collaboration and real world problem-solving. We emphasize the importance of compassionate leadership in a world where our students will be the stewards of a new era in communication,
innovation, and technology.” Our students are strengthening their emotional intelligence through explicit skills instruction in a weekly Social/Emotional curriculum guided by our school’s counselor. They also engage in community holidays and other projects transcending grade levels to help instill a broader connection to our local, national, and international community. A huge success this past year was the implementation of iReady, a new supplemental e-based learning math and reading curriculum. Students receive online tutorials and individualized lessons that target their specific learning needs. Students who are driven towards challenge participated in the new Accelerated and Enriched Learning Opportunities program where they had the opportunity to dive deeper into the curriculum and practices in Gifted Education. Our middle school students continue to be in the top performing class, scoring in the 90th percentiles on the PSATs. After a year of such
in appropriate ways. According to Suzanne Bouffard’s new book, “The Most Important Year”, these skills are all beginning to develop at 3,4,5 and the most important part of your child’s learning is building their social and emotional skill set. This past year at The Hebrew Academy Preschool, children not only had indoor and outdoor classroom experiences, they swam once a week at the aquatics center attached to the school. They learned dance movements and dramatization with
song from Tippi Toe Dance Company. They also were taught art from a residental artist and Hebrew Academy High School’s art teacher. A huge success this year was the Buddy Program. Students from the grade school came to share in science activities, story time, and more. They spend a few minutes gaining experience as a mentor but also helping the young children learn from someone other than their teacher. Programs like these are uniquely possible at The Hebrew Academy.
rich success and community building, we look forward to opening the new STEAM Lab that will foster a handson space where students will solve real-world problems by learning computer coding, and partaking in the new “Project of your Hearts
Desire” [PHD] as a capstone project for our graduating seniors. We are looking forward to even greater successes in the coming year. If you’d like to receive more information, email Nelli@hacds.org

We will celebrate and thank Hadassah’s generous donors who support and invest in the future of Israel, save lives every day, and ensure tomorrow’s medical miracles. The evening will feature patient advocate, Starr Mirza, who will share her personal story of how a gender discrimination in medicine impacts our lives in deeply personal ways. Mirza will tell about struggling with misdiagnoses for much of her adolescence. “The doctors were always pulling my parents aside and saying, ‘She’s doing
this for attention. There is nothing physically wrong with her. You need to send her to a psychiatrist,’” recalls Mirza, now 38. Despite showing physical symptoms, she couldn’t quite figure out, such as fainting and feeling a reoccurring “ticking” in her chest, doctors assured Mirza’s parents that she was fine. Until one day, newly married at 22, she collapsed from cardiac arrest. When she awoke, she learned she has Long QT syndrome, a genetic disease that can be deadly. The cost for the event is $65, plus a minimum gift of $180 or participation in Hadassah’s Annual Giving or Major Donors program. Successful Learning and Growth at the Shul by the Shore Hebrew School
Last summer, the Shul by the Shore welcomed its new Hebrew School director, Rochie ShawPerelmuter. After several years of experience involved in several Hebrew Schools on the east coast, it was time to put her experience to practice as director of the Shul by the Shore Hebrew School here in Long Beach. Innovation in the area of Jewish education is the great challenge of our time and, thank G-d, we have talent in the form of Rochie to help us into the future. This year, the students made Shofars for Rosh Hashanah, constructed menorahs for Chanukah, and baked matzah for Passover. It’s activities such as these that bring traditional Judaism alive for the next generation. Next year, we have a chocolate factory day and Hamantasch Bakeoff planned, as well as many other exciting activities. More importantly, each week the students are engaged in a Hebrew reading program called
Aleph Champ. As the flagship Hebrew reading program of Chabad nationally, it has been fine tuned to guide students on a steady progression toward fluency in Hebrew reading. It is inspired by the Karate system of colored levels with novices being ‘White’ and students earning ‘Yellow’, ‘Orange’ etc. till ‘Black’ is completely fluent in Hebrew reading. It is incentivized with ‘Torah Dollars’, where students are able to “purchase” their prizes from the ‘prize market’. Additionally, classes for teenagers were added under the instruction of ChayaLeah Sufrin using the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) Teens curriculum. JLI Teens incorporates ethics, philosophy, faith, history, current events, and textual studies. Next year, we will add another JLI Teen class. For more information about our Hebrew School, please contact Rochie@ ShulbytheShore.org or call (562) 621-9828.
