ensure the Jewish community here in Long Beach is always as vibrant as it is today, so that it will be here for our children and their children and more. It is our way of guaranteeing our Jewish traditions stay alive. Musical Chanukah Shabbat Dinner To locally celebrate the festival of lights, a Community-Wide Musical Chanukah Shabbat Dinner will take place on Friday, December 23rd, 2016 at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. Entertainment starts at 5:15 pm, headlined by Mostly Kosher, with special appearance by the Temple Israel Youth Choir. Federation provides financial support to local non-profits and synagogues, as well as oversea partners like The Jewish Agency for Israel. Featured are Itzik and his mother who are beneficiaries of The Jewish Agency for Israel’s flagship mentoring program,Youth Futures.

Soon we will be lighting our Chanukkah candles and celebrating the blessing of the holiday and it’s miracle. We can also celebrate the blessing and the miracle we provide every day, through the generosity of your gift to the Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign. It is not only that you are giving dollars, you are giving of your time, which reflects as an attitude to effect righteousness within the world. You could almost say your part in achieving balance in the world. Make a Blessing. Be a Blessing. Simple. Easy. It’s always something. That’s why there’s Federation. With your help, the Jewish Federation is in the best position to do the most good. Federations touch more Jewish lives on the planet than any other organization. When Israel is under attack, we are on the front lines. Millions of Jews find every day a struggle, we are a lifeline. The world is an unstable place, we bring security. Rebuild. Revive. Reinvent Jewish Life? Yes, we can! We help those Jews most in need, wherever that might be, including our extended Jewish community around the world, often the poorest of Jews. We connect as many Jews as possible to Jewish life and enable them to find their own connections to Jewish community and exploration. We work to solve the problems and challenges facing the Jewish people today and into the future. We do this through the Annual Community Campaign and its annual allocations. Your giving to the 2017/5777 Annual Community Campaign does more and goes further than you can imagine. Our reach is so broad and expansive it helps keep and unite the world Jewish community. We have to be the voice for those that can’t speak up. We have to be the support for those that need it. We have to 2 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |

Year End Charitable Planning Begins Now: Advantages of a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development

Are you looking for a way to minimize your taxes, create a family legacy or simplify your annual giving with one convenient account? If so, then a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund may be for you. By opening a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund (DAPF) at the Jewish Community Foundation before December 31st, you will still be able to receive a charitable tax-deduction this year. A DAPF allows you the flexibility of opening the fund in one year and then using this fund to recommend distributions to any IRS approved nonprofit organization when it’s convenient for you. If you write multiple checks to several nonprofit organizations over the course of a year, then a DAPF allows you to centralize your charitable dollars into one account. You open the fund and The Jewish Community Foundation does the work. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about these Funds.

How Do I Open a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund (DAPF)? Your personal DAPF is established by making a minimum contribution of $2,000.00 in cash or securities to the Jewish Community Foundation. Any additional contributions of various amounts can be made at any time and are also taxdeductible. A balance of $1,000 is needed to keep the fund open. Many donors choose to fund their DAPF with long-term appreciated securities. By donating appreciated stock held for more than one year to a DAPF, donors can avoid or reduce capital gains taxes.

charitable organizations on your schedule. Once a deposit is made to the fund, there is a 90 day waiting period before a distribution can be made. Since the Foundation does not charge any fees for DAPF’s the 90 day period allows the Foundation to accumulate some investment earnings. All the investment earnings are pooled into the Foundation’s General Unrestricted Fund which is used to make grants to local agencies and synagogues and to support the donor services provided by the Foundation. Distributions are made twice a month and you can mail, e-mail or fax over the distribution forms. The letter also states that the gift may not be applied to pay for goods or services or applied to any outstanding obligations.

Lighting Hanukah Candles to Bring Light During the Darkest Days By Rabbi Drew Kaplan

Arguably, one of the most familiar Jewish holidays in the year is occurring this month, which Rabbi Drew is great not Kaplan to have to explain to gentile friends, co-workers, or neighbors. However, what is not clear is one of the most central aspects of this holiday. Alongside Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover, I would venture that Hanukah is one of the most familiar Jewish holidays in America. So, what is this holiday about? While we know that the holiday was created on account of the Hasmonean re-taking of the Holy Temple from the Seleucid Army in

164 BCE, it is slightly unclear why we do what we do. By this I mean that our Rabbis tell us that: “When the Greeks entered the Temple, they defiled all the oils therein, and when the Hasmonean dynasty prevailed against & defeated them, they searched and found only one cruse of oil which lay with the seal of the High Priest, but which contained enough for one day’s lighting only; yet a miracle was done and they lit the lamp with it for eight days” (Shabbat 21b). How did they seek to celebrate this miracle? “The following year, these [days] were appointed a Festival with Hallel and thanksgiving.” It is somewhat curious that the prescriptions our sages

laid down to commemorate this victory and miracle was through liturgical means. While adding prayers in Judaism is not uncommon, no mention is made of candle-lighting. Of course, other rabbinic texts certainly do make mention of candlelighting, but it’s unclear why candle-lighting was instituted as a way of celebrating Hanukah. In this mystery, it does not seem to be a coincidence that the timing of Hanukah falls roughly around the winter solstice, when sunlight is at its least amount throughout the year. That there is light being shown during the darkest days is a powerful image. There is one suggestion in the Talmud, however, of

why candle-lighting was instituted to be carried out on Hanukah. Rava, who might be considered the most impressive rabbinic sage of the fourth-century CE, suggested that the candlelighting is done on account of publicizing the miracle of what occurred in the Temple. I wonder if mentioning the miracle in Hallel and thanksgiving prayers were seen as having been somehow insufficient, as they are merely auditory, whereas the visual recognition of candles can be a more easily recognizable manner of the miracle being made known. Nevertheless, as anyone who has visited Israel during Hanukah can attest, walking along the streets, especially

in the Old City of Jerusalem, is a wondrous sight, with candles accompanying one’s perambulating, providing an enchantingly and emotional experience. While it remains unclear specifically why the candlelighting was introduced to celebrate Hanukah, it is a lovely idea to consider the providing of light to the darkest of days, especially in a public fashion. Not only do we provide light to our own homes with the candles, but we also share it with passersby, illuminating both our lives and theirs.

After the Election Debbie Freeman

Director of Clinical Services, Jewish Family & Children’s Service

*This article was written before we knew the actual results of our election and is meant to be a source of support and guidance for us all. The past year and a half

we have all been through the most tumultuous election in a very long time and it has brought out our passions and our fears. Many of us have felt supported and many of us have felt isolated. Everyone seems to be affected by the divide in America somehow, either by mourning a loss, avoiding a friend, intra-family fractures, or celebrating quietly alone. Do we all feel alone on

some level after such an ordeal? It seems so, and this can leave a footprint of sadness. So, as we go into the Thanksgiving and Chanukah season perhaps some suggestions are in order: Find what you have in common with others and enjoy them in those ways. Friendships as well as family relationships that have been built over years of time and investment should remain as

a source of support. Don’t be impulsive and hurt others, as well as yourself. Remember that there are important reasons why they have been in your life Recognize that you, or a loved one, is fragile right now and extend a hand. Don’t gloat in front of someone who doesn’t feel the same way you do. Don’t expose young children to your feelings of

despair or sense of injustice. This does them no good. If you need to vent, find a friend or other adult. If you are finding yourself agitated or angry, find an outlet for that energy that is positive: volunteer for a cause you believe in, help someone else in some way, show kindness to others as well as to yourself. Let’s all try to heal as we move forward.

Familiar faces, delicious cuisine, beautifully appointed tables, and lively music set the scene for Café Europa 2016, a luncheon that brings together

local Holocaust survivors for enjoying each other’s company, sharing a meal, and meeting new friends. Jewish Family & Children’s Service of

Long Beach & West Orange County hosted the annual event on November 15th. JFCS Board members, staff, social work interns, and

Marriage and Family Therapist trainees and interns joined the survivors at lunch to meet them and learn more about their journeys to the United States

and eventually to California. Many of the survivors have attended past events and have formed strong friendships with other attendees, particularly in instances where a common language, like Russian, Polish, or Yiddish, is shared. Café Europa is named for a café in Stockholm, Sweden, where Holocaust survivors would gather to hopefully find loved ones or exchange information that might help them reunite with surviving family members. Similar events are sponsored by organizations like JFCS in cities throughout the United States.

AJCC STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Message from the Executive Director

The holiday of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, reminds people of all faiths that, in the face of darkness and despair, you can still have light and hope. This message is particularly valuable now as we look toward a future of uncertainty for many people. I hope that you will all remember that despite what is going on around you in the world, the Alpert JCC is a haven of comfort, tolerance, and hope. In the month of December, this is particularly true, because in December, the Alpert JCC is a truly uplifting place to be. The wonderful ECE and Youth art in the Gatov Gallery, the festive lights, and the colorful decorations all reflect the inspirational message of optimism and community that make the J so warm and inviting. Chanukah comes late this year (sundown, December 24), but that doesn’t mean the month of December isn’t full of our usual bustle of activities. All the fun events going on during this month can be found on the calendar at www.alpertjcc.org, including a Zumba party on December 4, Olive Oil tastings, a vendor boutique (December 12-15), Chanukah parties, Coffee Talks, a senior Chanukah lunch (December 28), and goodies in the Promenade the entire week of Chanukah! I also hope that you will be able to come to our community menorah lightings at 3:30pm, December 26-30. We are also asking for your help with our outreach program for Senior adults who are homebound or who are living in nursing homes and board and care facilities. Volunteers are packing and driving on the morning of Thursday, December 22 (9:30 packing, 11:30 driving). To help with this mitzvah, please call Dr. Susan Mathieu at (562) 426-7601 x1721. Our biggest event of the month is the community-wide Musical Chanukah Shabbat Celebration on Friday, December 23, at 5:15pm! It will be a family-oriented musical extravaganza with a headline performance from the musical group Mostly Kosher and featuring the Temple Israel Youth Choir. The cost of the event includes a Chanukah service, kosher dinner and the concert. Details can be found at the J and on the website. I am so excited about this new event in our community, and I know that everyone is going to have a fantastic time! Please be sure to visit the Alpert JCC this month to see what makes our community so special, and why, no matter what time of year, there is an environment of hope and faith that is welcoming to everyone. It is with this in mind, that I know the J will always be Your Center For Life.

Shlomit Jackson

Director of Jewish Life & Culture Shlomit Jackson has been a part of the JCC since she was in high school and worked as a camp counselor. Beginning in high school, she also taught Hebrew and Judaic studies at various temples in the area. “I have always kept my close relationship with my faith and with Israel and my family. I can’t see myself doing anything else. When I had my daughter, Danielle, I became a member here again because I wanted her to be in the preschool (ECE). When my son, Noah, started here, it was the perfect time to start working again, and where better than the ECE? “I started with the alef-bet chug, and then I took a teaching position. From that more opportunities came my way, and I became the Jewish educator in the preschool; in April 2014, I accepted the full time position of AJCC Jewish Educator. I honestly can’t see myself working anywhere else. It makes sense for me as a Jewish professional, having a love for Israel and bringing my ruach (spirit), enthusiasm, and knowledge to the community here—both to the staff and the members.” Shlomit moved to the United States from Israel in 1985 because of her father’s work. They moved to Virginia Beach, VA, where her mother’s aunt, a holocaust survivor, lived. In 1990, her family moved to Long Beach; her father had the opportunity to expand to the west coast and they had relatives here as well: the Bershtel family on her father’s side. Shlomit went to UCI for her BA in Psychology and Social Behavior, and she had the opportunity to go to the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem for her Junior Year abroad. “I always knew I wanted to go to Israel for my Jr. Year. I recommend going abroad for every college student.” When Shlomit talks about working here at the J, her enthusiasm is unbounded: “I just love working here! What’s not to love about waking up in the morning and singing with the preschoolers? I get to teach blessings and sing songs I love to sing. I also really enjoy working closely with Maureen Lawrence. Together we are known as ShloMo, and we get to bring singing, dancing, and movement to the children of ECE each and every week. “I have such a close relationship with the preschool families, instilling the values of Judaism into their lives along with the traditions and customs of the holidays. It gives me such joy to work with the teachers and develop the ideas of Tikkun Olam, which then reach from the preschool to the entire JCC community. It’s gratifying to see Tikkun Olam infused throughout the building, with the food drives, Alex’s lemonade stand, working with JFCS with adopt-a-family, hug packs with NCJW, etc. Working with the other organizations and agencies is rewarding. “The collaboration and support that I get from all the people I work with is so great. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do here without the help of Ronnie Levine, Susan Paletz, and of course, Alayna Cosores in the ECE. We all love and support each other, and it comes out in the programs that we create for our members. I knew Jeffrey Rips before I even came here because of my involvement with Hillel at UCI and working previously with some of his colleagues who are still my friends. I have worked really closely with Jeffrey about maintaining the mission and vision about the relationship with Judaism and Israel. I’m really proud of what we have been able to accomplish in the building. When you walk in, there’s music, there’s food during the holidays, there’s the monitors livestreaming the Western Wall, and the building is always decorated for the Jewish holidays. It’s a wonderful atmosphere.”

Evva Vale Community Art Show

Monday, January 16, 2017

On November 3, 2016, the Alpert Jewish Community Center was buzzing with excitement from the artist reception for the Evva Vale Community Art Show. Throughout the months of October and November, the art show has been going on in the Zena and Pauline Gatov Gallery at the JCC. The theme of this year’s show was “Shalom to Us All” (Hello, Goodbye, and Peace). This year was the first year the show was open to anyone over 18 in the community at large, and the response was excellent. In previous years, the contest was only open to art students. Participants covered a wide variety of ages, artistic styles, and ethnic backgrounds, with expertise ranging from amateur to professional. There were 30 artists represented and even more who entered. Some of the artists show their work at dedicated exhibits throughout the year at the AJCC. Cash prizes were given for first, second, and third place. The work represented in the gallery is absolutely beautiful, including photography, needlework, watercolors, and ceramic art. This year’s winners were Sandra Joffe, First Place; Hyra George, Second Place; Sandi Candiotty, Third Place; Ruth Reiko Anisman, Judges Choice; Tzippy Markes-Barnett, Honorable Mention; Fran Drosman; Honorable Mention; and Ruhama Cohen; Honorable Mention.

We will be honoring Dr. King’s memory by learning about his heroism. We will read stories and learn how the Jewish community has partnered with other groups for social justice. Sign up today!

Annual Chanukah Party Despite Chanukah being pushed to late December this year, coinciding with Winter Break and its corresponding holidays, Beach Hillel held its annual Chanukah Party on Thursday, December 1st, which fell 2 weeks before Final Exam week. Bringing together students from all walks of

Jewish life, the Chanukah Party brought joy to students through fellowship, engaging activities, and traditions reminiscent of childhood and camp days. Perhaps the most impactful aspect of the Chanukah Party was when students were offered time to reflect on their year and write letters to their

families. While Guess-theGelt and Chanukah Trivia were fun activities, our students embraced the joyful and family-oriented character of Chanukah and we were able to build a stronger community in the process. Chanukah at Beach Hillel is a time when students are encouraged to

integrate their own customs into the fabric of Hillel programming. By coming together as a community, our Chanukah Party strengthened the connectedness of Beach Hillel students. If you would like to sponsor future holiday events, contact Rachel Kaplan, at Rachel@BeachHillel.org.

Student Spotlight: Rachel Spivak

Every student has their own unique Jewish story and Rachel Spivak has chosen to share her story for December’s Student Spotlight. As a freshman at CSU Long Beach, Rachel has dedicated herself both to pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and being involved in the Beach Hillel community. Hailing from the San Francisco metropolitan area, Rachel, and her twin sister, Claire, had developed a long-lasting relationship with Hillel that was kindled by babysitting for Hillel staff members. From her love for dancing to a desire to explore new places, Rachel was convinced that CSU Long Beach was the place for her and that Beach Hillel would be her new home. After having a jampacked school semester, while also being an integral part of Beach Hillel, Rachel is excited to go back home for Chanukah and share in the joy of togetherness at her grandmother’s house as they give gifts and love each other. We look forward to seeing Rachel back at Beach Hillel once school is back in session!

Parent to Parent: Invest in Your Child By Beth Dobkin, Hebrew Academy Parent & Jewish Federation’s ANLF Gracuate - Class of 2016

My children found a home away from home. A place that teaches them the skills to be learned scholars, core Jewish values, compassion for each other and much more. You may ask “where is this place and how did my children get there?” I was brought up in a Jewish home. I attended a reform synagogue and had a bat mitzvah. I am a proud Jew and I received an excellent public school education. I never contemplated sending my children to a Jewish Day School. They would learn about the Jewish culture and traditions essentially by our practices at home and attending temple services. After much soul searching, I began to rethink my decision to send my children to public school and I now see the panoply of benefits a Jewish Day School provides. Last year I met Rabbi Newman, the Director of The Hebrew Academy, at an Alpert Jewish Community Center Leadership Forum. When we spoke, I told him that my children did not need to attend a Jewish Day School as they were being raised

in a Jewish household. They were proud Jews. They were attending Temple services. Rabbi Newman pointed out that I might be the center of my children’s lives now, but not for much longer. Soon their peers would be their greatest influence. He challenged me to come and observe the students engaged in learning at The Hebrew Academy. Last February, I decided to sit in on a day in the life of a kindergartener. The students’ excitement to learn, the general studies and Judaic Studies teachers’ passion to engage the students in learning, the camaraderie of the children, the warm environment is a mental picture I will never forget. I remember thinking how blessed these children were to be in this environment. What a wise investment the parents were making in their children’s lives. As a member of Phi Beta Kappa, I want everyone to develop a love of learning. That philosophy is shared by the students at The Hebrew Academy. It had never been important to me that my children learn to read, write and speak

14 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |

in Hebrew, but now I have changed my mind. It’s a breathtaking experience to observe the students passion for learning how to think, speak, and write in a different language. I know that whatever synagogue they will go that they will fully comprehend the Hebrew language. These experiences were the catalyst for my decision to send my children to The Hebrew Academy. During my oldest son’s first week of school, I was walking him to class in the morning and he was upset. He had misplaced his favorite kippah and therefore was unable to wear it to school. We were discussing it on the way to class and one of the Rabbi’s overheard our conversation. He said hello and knelt down to be eye level with my son. The Rabbi asked him what was wrong. He told the Rabbi about his missing kippah. The Rabbi asked him to please wait a moment and then we watched him run to the school’s main office. When he came back he was holding a new Hebrew Academy kippah. The Rabbi placed it on my son’s head and wished him a great day. This is one of a plethora of examples of the compassion and child centered environment that is at the heart of the school. Each day my children’s mind, body and spirits are challenged and nourished. The strong academics, Jewish ethics, incredible teachers, warm atmosphere, child centered environment, and sense of community are the reasons my children are blooming intellectually, socially and emotionally. These are the hallmarks of a great school! My children feel safe to grow and learn. I am proud to send them to The Hebrew Academy.

Serving the Students of the 21st Century

“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” -- Benjamin Franklin

The Hebrew Academy of Orange County internalizes these ideals to make leaps in its growth and progress. The Hebrew Academy was chosen from more than 40 schools nationwide to participate in the Atidenu program. Thanks to generous grants from the Jewish Federation of Long Beach and the JFFS in Irvine, we can make the Academy an even better school. The Hebrew Academy of Orange County is the only school that was nationally rated by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation twice. Additionally, the preschool was rated 5 stars. Now we just opened the only Jewish infant center that starts with children only 6 months of age. By having the Atidenu program coaching us, we will

be able to continue providing the best for our students and parents. We want to make sure that the parents are getting their return on their investment. The only way to do such is to be able to look very carefully into the program, marketing, and admissions process to improve what we have. Bathea James is one of 3 coaches that will visit the school and will have the opportunity to talk to parents, students, staff and alumnus. Speaking to these groups will better define areas in which the Academy is excelling as well as those areas that need improvement. The Atidenu program is 2 years long. During this time, we will be asked many questions and be provided valuable data. These questions and data points are areas that very few school have the ability or the opportunity to examine internally. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and scholars with the best service and education.
