FEATURE STORY
A Holiday of Feasting, Revelry & Giving By Danny Levy, Director of Development
It’s time for feasting and gladness, gift-giving and tzedakah (charity), revelry, parties and masquerades as Purim is celebrated around the world. Here at home, all of our agencies and synagogues gather together for a giant, Community Purim Carnival.
Community-Wide
Purim Activities
Community Celebration This year’s Purim Carnival, will be held on Sunday, February 25th, 2018 at the Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC) on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. Join with the AJCC, the Jewish Federation, local synagogues, and other area Jewish organizations as we come together to celebrate Purim. Outdoor festivities include circus entertainment, game truck, carnival games and rides, ferris wheel, train, pony rides, inflatable obstacle course, mechanical bull, and a costume contest with prizes. Enjoy all these activities with delicious kosher food, hamentaschen, music, vendors and more. To volunteer, contact Gayle Ehrenberg at gehrenberg@alpertjcc.org or (562) 426-7601 ext. 1013 and let her know your availability. The Whole Megillah At Purim we read the Book of Esther, called the Megillah (the scroll). The Megillah is in the form of a parchment scroll, handwritten like a Torah, and is read twice, once at the evening (Ma’ariv) service and once during (Shaharit) the morning service. It tells the story of the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian empire where a plot had been formed by Haman – the royal vizier to King Ahasuerus – to kill all the Jews. Haman’s plans were foiled by Mordecai and his adopted daughter Esther, who had risen to become Queen of Persia. This day of deliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing. Mitzvot Purim presents us with wonderful opportunities to give to our friends, family and the community at large. The three “giving” mitzvot, or commandments, of Purim are: mechazit hashekel, literally translated it means giving half a coin, implying that the coin should be donated to a just cause; mishloach manot, or sending gifts of food to friends and family; and mataonot la’evyonim, or giving gifts to the poor. Every day in our community, the donations that are given through the Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign provide necessary funds that support counseling, senior programming, crisis response around the world, aid for at-risk youth, educational & recreational programs, programs for teens & young adults, early childhood and day school scholarships, funding the Weinberg Campus and much more. To make your 2018 Annual Community Campaign gift, please contact Danny Levy at dlevy@jewishlongbeach.org 2 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |

Special Mitzvot at Carnival The Alpert New Leaders Forum Alumni invite you to participate in their inaugural Prom Dress Drive event. Alumna, Rachel Suojanen, who is a teacher at Long Beach Poly High School, states, “Every year students miss out on Senior Prom because they cannot afford to go. Let’s make sure every 12th grader in Long Beach knows that we are proud of their thirteen years of hard work. Clean out your closet while helping a student to attend Senior Prom in style! You can help by bringing new or gently used, clean party dresses on hangers; party type costume jewelry; dressy shoes; new unopened makeup or gift cards to local clothing stores, to the Alpert New Leaders booth at the Purim Carnival. In addition, we can use some moving company wardrobe boxes and garment racks to store the dresses. Please contact Sharon Kenigsberg at sharonk@jewishlongbeach to arrange a drop-off time other than the carnival. So this Purim holiday, come together with members of our community in charity, feasting and gladness. May your Purim be merry, and may it be enriched with the joy of giving and sharing! Chag Purim Sameach!

Jewish Community Foundation OF GREATER LONG BEACH & WEST ORANGE COUNTY
ENSURE OUR FUTURE Foundation Fund Provides Summer Camp Scholarship By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development
Camper climbing obstacle course.
Many of us over the years have made an investment in the Jewish community. The Jewish Community Foundation is here to work with you to protect your investment and to ensure our future as a Jewish community. One of the ways that we can preserve our traditions is by creating or donating to existing funds that
support an area of Jewish programming. Named Funds can be set up with a minimum contribution of $10,000. This contribution can be made in the person’s lifetime or can be funded through monies left in a bequest through a will or trust. Once a fund is established, additional contributions may be made to the fund by any donors. One such fund is the Rabbi Howard Laibson Campership Fund, which was established by Congregation Shir Chadash upon the retirement of Rabbi Laibson. The purpose of this fund is to provide a scholarship to a needy child to attend a Jewish resident camp. This year the fund can provide a small scholarship to only one camper who plans to attend a resident camp sponsored by the
Reform movement. As others contribute to this fund it can grow and more scholarships will be available for resident camps within all the streams of Judaism. (Please see the Rabbinic Reflections article on Page 6 about the impact of Jewish summer camps) The Jewish Community Foundation holds many funds that have an impact on Jewish life in our community. There are unrestricted funds which allow the Foundation board to make grants to our local Jewish communal organizations. There are also “Named Funds” which are set up by either individual donors or organizations for the benefit of specific programs. There are currently Named Funds that support Holocaust education, Jewish cultural arts, Jewish community security, the Weinberg Jewish Federation
Campers waving the Flag of Israel.
Campus, transportation to Jewish events for those in need, teen travel to Israel, local agencies & synagogues, and much more. The possibilities for helping to ensure the future of our community are endless! For more information on how to
open a new fund, contribute to existing funds, or to receive an application for a camp scholarship, please email Sharon Kenigsberg at sharonk@jewishlongbeach. org or call (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008.

Jewish Camps - The Experience of a Lifetime By Rabbi Howard Laibson
In addition to my family upbringing, the most powerful impact on my Jewish development was being Rabbi able to Howard Laibson attend a Jewish summer camp. It was there that I fell in love with Jewish song leading, with Jewish prayer, with Jewish history and with Jewish peoplehood. It was also at camp where I made friends who have spanned virtually my entire life. As it turns out, many of those friends became rabbis, Jewish educators and Jewish communal professional and lay leaders. So, what is it that makes Jewish camp so special? To answer that question, I turned to the Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC). Here’s their take: “Summers at overnight camps are packed with a wide range of fun activities— aquatics, arts and crafts, basketball and soccer, dance, music, cooking,
archery, drama, outdoor adventure and hiking, and much more! Campers are encouraged to discover new skills and interests they never knew they had. Jewish camp weaves Jewish values, culture, and traditions into the fabric of camp, helping campers to connect to their own identity and the larger Jewish community. Spirited and dynamic staff members use experiential learning to reveal what makes Jewish religion and culture so unique in today’s world. At camp, Jewish and Israeli culture is celebrated through song, food, art, and dance.” And creative informal educational learning, I would add. “Each camp designs its own program to be accessible and enjoyable for all campers. Whether they’re telling stories in their bunks, learning about the environment, or playing tennis, campers explore what Judaism means to them in a safe, nurturing, and fun environment. The impact of Jewish camp is immediate— campers return home connected to a community
and friends that will last them a lifetime. “And it doesn’t stop there. Children with pivotal Jewish camp experiences are more likely to become adults who value their Jewish heritage, support Jewish causes, and take on leadership roles in their communities.” That isn’t merely a marketing schpiel. Significant and replicated research indicates that Jewish camp experiences, along with Israel trips, are the most powerful sources of motivation for later identification and participation in Jewish life and culture. There are many very fine Jewish camps on the West Coast, reflecting the perspectives of all of the streams of Jewish practice. If you’re a young person, tell your parents that you want to attend a Jewish summer camp. If you’re a parent or grandparent, send the child(ren) in your life to a Jewish summer camp. If you’re a rabbi, cantor or Jewish educator, send your students to Jewish summer camp.
Summer camps are costly, but well worth the investment. If you find the costs prohibitive, please know these things: 1. Jewish camps often have camperships available. Don’t be afraid to ask about them! 2. “One Happy Camper”, a program of the Foundation for Jewish Camp, has $1,000 camperships for firsttime campers enrolling in a Jewish summer camp. 3. Our Long Beach Jewish Community Foundation has a campership fund, established in my name by Congregation Shir Chadash when I retired. Check into it. 4. All of the above. Jewish camps make a profound and very positive impact on the lives of hundreds of young people every summer. Send your children to a Jewish camp this year. L’shalom, Rabbi Laibson Rabbi Howard O. Laibson is the Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Shir Chadash in Lakewood, CA. He also serves as the Chair of the Federation Kehillah Council.

Fred Johnson, fjohnson@alpertjcc.org • (562) 426-7601 x1056
January 31 was Tu B’Shevat, the 15th day of the Jewish month of Shevat, also known as the New Year for Trees. In Israel, the day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration. There are several customs related to this holiday.
One is to eat a new fruit or to eat from the Seven Species (shivat haminim) described in the Torah as being abundant in the land of Israel. The Seven Species are wheat, barley, grapes (vines), figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates (honey). People often celebrate by having Seders in the tradition of Passover featuring dishes from the Seven Species. Our ECE held their Tu B’Shevat Seders on February 1 and 2, and I hope you were able to stop by the table in the Promenade on January 31 for your treat in honor of this special holiday for trees.
SilverSneakers® and Silver&Fit® may allow you to have your Alpert JCC membership fees waived as a benefit of your healthcare plan.
February is National Heart Month, and here at the J, we believe that a healthy heart is one that is strong both from exercise and from the great connections made in a place where you belong. I hope all of you are taking advantage of everything we offer in our Fitness Center (over 50 free group classes a week for members)!
Contact your healthcare provider today to see if you qualify. Alpert JCC Membership Courtesy Desk (562) 426-7601 x1051
In addition to our Fitness Center offerings, we have many exciting events that will bring joy to your heart. Please join the new Barbara Alpert Chorus on Wednesday mornings at 10:30. Their singing fills the Promenade with heartfelt music. For those of you who have the heart to watch another Patriots Super Bowl—we have our annual Super Bowl Party featuring the largest screen in Long Beach and all-you-can-eat kosher hot dogs, munchies, and drinks. Our annual partnership with Long Beach Unified School district—the Gottlieb Youth Art Show—will be on exhibit throughout the month, and the Reception and Awards Night will take place on the evening of February 22. This is a great partnership, and it’s truly heartwarming to see the looks on the teens’ faces when they receive their recognition and awards. I hope you can join us. February also brings our annual community Purim Carnival on Sunday, February 25. This year promises to be even bigger than ever, as in addition to all the carnival games and rides, we’ll have a game truck, obstacle course, and some special circus type entertainment. With our new solar panels providing extra shade, this will surely be the biggest and best Purim Carnival ever. Have you decided what Purim costume you’re going to wear? Please save the date on Saturday, March 10, 7-10:30 pm. We’ll be having a great time at our annual fundraiser, Adults at Play 2.0, returning to the CSULB Student Union Game Center. In honor of National Heart Month—from my heart to yours—I hope you will continue to take advantage of all the wonderful services and activities for both your physical and emotional heart that are available to you here at the Alpert JCC, Your Center For Life!

30 Years: From Athlete’s Fete to Race With A View What began as a walking event for kids to help kids in 1988 has evolved into this year’s 30th Annual Race With A View, to be held on May 6 in downtown Long Beach at 8:00 a.m. From the seed of an idea, many volunteers over 3 decades lent their time, skills, and financial resources to bring the event along to its current status as a public awareness vehicle for the importance of access to mental health services for everyone in our community. In 1988, the first Athlete’s Fete, named by Myrna Wigod, was held at CSULB with the idea of raising money to help fund a program for children’s counseling at JFCS. Children, parents, and grandparents could walk together and ask friends and other family members for pledges per mile walked. The event was chaired by Howard Weiss for 20 years and continued at CSULB for many of those

The first major corporate sponsors were Elaine and Howard Davis and their company, Universal Care, and in its most successful year, the event raised $51,000 for the children’s counseling program. The

There was much enthusiasm for taking advantage of the beach bike path and scenic nature of an evolving downtown. Hillel’s Drinking Like an Adult Series Engages Hillel Alumni and Local Young Professionals! A new series for the 21+ crowd to explore a mature approach to alcohol consumption has kicked off this spring. Beginning in January 2018 and continuing through April, Beach Hillel’s new Drinking Like an Adult series is for older undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, as well as young adults in the area. Led by Rabbi Drew Kaplan, the new series takes place once every two weeks at a different brewery and explores not only Jewish traditions, but also seeks to educate young adults regarding appropriate drinking practices as they enter adulthood. The Drinking Like an Adult series takes place in the Long Beach area, with the final event taking place at a brewery in a nearby city. The series costs $36 and includes
one beer at each session, with participants able to purchase more drinks on their own. Attendees who offer to serve as a designated [nondrinking] driver will receive a $5 gift card to The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf each time. The series kicked off on January 23rd at Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits in Long Beach, which featured an introduction on alcoholdrinking and Jewish values. The next session will occur on February 6th and subsequent sessions will occur every other week to follow (except during the week of Passover holiday), with sessions occurring on February 20th, March 6th, March 20th, and April 10th. Any questions about the event or upcoming programs may be directed towards Beach Hillel’s Engagement Associate, Ally Levine at Ally@BeachHillel.org
Student Leaders Get Ready for Our Pitch Competition! For the first time at Beach Hillel, the students will have the opportunity to participate in a “Shark Tankstyle” competition, in which they will pitch their ideas for Jewish programs on campus.
The first annual Hillel Pitch Competition will take place on Wednesday, February 7th, at the Soroptimist House and we will be awarding the Top 3 pitches with funds and staff resources to host their
programs. The Beach Hillel staff see this as a wonderful opportunity to increase opportunities for student leadership without the need for students to commit to an
entire year of leadership. We have seen this blueprint work very well for the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and their semiannual i-Pitch event, as many of our students over the years
have developed as strong leaders through this method. To learn how to sponsor our Hillel Pitch Competition, contact our Executive Director, Rachel Kaplan, at Rachel@BeachHillel.org

Engineering Minds and Cultivating Entrepreneurs
Students measuring the patch of land needed for the school’s community garden.
At the Hebrew Academy, we are teaching more than the standard curriculum - we are preparing our students to learn and lead into the 21st century! Fortune 500 companies, business experts, and career analysts agree that more than any other time in history, successful students will know how to think critically and creatively, collaborate and cooperate effectively, and become innovative problem-solvers. Project-based learning (PBL) is a well-documented and effective instructional strategy that simulates real world problem-solving. In recent years, PBL has been a defining feature of the Hebrew Academy. Having trained at the prestigious Buck Institute of Project Based Learning, our teachers and students delve deeply into a topic, integrating learning across disciplines in the context of meaningful, relevant, handson action research. Currently, our middle school students are engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math learning developing an organic garden. They are researching the benefits and challenges of organic farming, visiting a working organic farm, developing research questions along
with strategies to learn and apply learning. This type of learning integrates and incorporates all subject areas while engaging students in meaningful and authentic work. Students are drawn to PBL because it allows them to access the curriculum in a variety of ways that appeal to their individual learning styles - their individual talents, interests, disposition, strengths, and preferences. Choice is a defining characteristic in PBL. Rather than the teacher, alone, determining what the problem is, and how students will learn about it and express their learning, students are actively engaged in determining their own paths for learning. Students are presented with learning provocations that prompt them to imagine, envision, and consider real world problems. The students are then thoughtfully supported and guided by teachers in the process of inquiry and discovery. While solving real world problems, they are learning science, technology, engineering, art, and math! For more information about Project-Based Learning for student engagement, send an email to Nelli Greenspan at Nelli@hacds.org

Celebrate Hebrew Academy’s Visionary Dinner Gala on Sunday, February 25, 2018
Robert & Helen Rosenberg
The Hebrew Academy is proud to announce that our annual Visionary Dinner will take place this year on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at the magnificent Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. We are honoring two very special people who value the vital importance of Jewish education. They are Robert and Helen Rosenberg, who will be receiving the Leadership In Education award. Hilary
Buff, a Hebrew Academy Alumnus, will represent the graduating class of 19871988 and receive the Young Leadership Award for her accomplishments in the community. The enjoyable evening will again be hosted by television personality Elon Gold with a special guest entertainer. The Visionary Dinner is the Hebrew Academy’s major fundraising event and the signature evening of the year. The event celebrates Jewish education and the continued accomplishments of the Hebrew Academy that serves over a thousand youngsters annually. The funds that are raised benefit the school’s scholarship fund, insuring that all children, regardless of their background, will have access to the exemplary educational
and social programs that the organization offers. Over a million dollars is distributed annually through the scholarship fund. The evening opens with appetizers and a wine tasting in the stunning courtyard of the Four Seasons, followed by a spectacular Four Seasons style dinner leading to awards, entertainment, and the pleasure of the Hebrew Academy’s young choir! We welcome everyone to socialize, meet the leading supporters of the school, make important connections, and demonstrate commitment to Jewish education the Hebrew Academy way. If you are interested in attending this event and/or want more information, please call Jenny Kdoshim at (714) 898-0051 ext. 223 or send an email to EventsHaHB@gmail.com

The children enrolled in this program are able to learn social skills, self-regulation, and friendship building within a warm, loving, caring, and safe environment. With a 1:4 teacher-child ratio, the teachers are all experienced and trained in early childhood education, so they know what to expect from the children developmentally and are able to nurture their growing skills accordingly.
