L’Dor V’Dor: Federation Leadership for Tomorrow Deborah K. Goldfarb Chief Executive Officer, Jewish Federation Jewish Community Foundation
Jewish history has shown us that leadership is essential to the continuation of our Jewish way of life. We are a lifeline. We rebuild, revive, and reinvent Jewish life. We are on the front line of bringing security to a fragile world. Federation has a century long tradition of touching more Jewish lives on the planet than any other organization, and providing opportunities for emerging leaders to experience the breadth of our impact is essential to our community’s future. To ensure that we have strong Federation leadership to continue into the next century, long time community leaders Ann & Gene Lentzner have generously created and endowed The Lentzner Leadership Fellows Program. Our Jewish Community is dependent on community leaders engaging and empowering the next generation of leaders to devote their time and talent to take the helm and place Jewish faith and values as the forefront of their efforts to serve the public good.
The Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, shares her Jewish journey at the General Assembly.
working diligently to eventually become a President of both organizations. “L’dor v’dor is crucial. I believe that while one is here on earth, you should be proactive and give to the best of your abilities. It is a moral and human obligation to guarantee that what you have done in your lifetime continues on,” states Gene.
Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks at the Opening Plenary of the 2016 General Assembly.
The inaugural class of the Lentzner program began this fall. As part of the program we sent a small delegation to the recent Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly (GA) in Washington, D.C. The GA brings together thousands of volunteers and professionals from Federations across North America. Ann & Gene Lentzner wholeheartedly believe in the value of L’dor v’dor - From Generation to Generation - to ensure that there will be a Jewish present and future. When the Lentzners moved from St. Louis to Long Beach in the 1950’s, there was an immense amount of bigotry and overt discrimination towards anyone who was Jewish. Gene became very involved with the local Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation, 2 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |
The Lentzner Fellows Program is a two-year commitment, designed to provide an in-depth understanding and mentorship of how Federation works to provide for the Jewish Community. Invited participants attend Federation and Foundation Board meetings and related training sessions to learn about how we currently function, and to prepare them for leadership positions in the future. This first class of the Lentzner Fellows consists of 16 individuals. Many of the class are graduates of the Alpert New Leaders Forum, a shorter survey program geared for creating leaders across the entire Jewish community. Five Lentzner Fellows attended the General Assembly. They included: Ariela Laibson, Richard Marcus, Jeb Brilliant, the Honorable Sunny Zia. Federation’s Neuberger Young Leadership Award Winner, Chaya Leah Sufrin, was unable to attend, but was recognized at the event. It was an incredible experience to spend time with some of our emerging leaders at the GA and to see them absorb a broad perspective of Jewish thought leaders.

“The GA was a tremendous experience and I am deeply grateful to Gene, Ann and the program. I am honored to have been there to hear Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks and Justice Ginsburg,” said Richard Marcus. Ariela Laibson agrees that these were some of the highlights of the experience. “I wish everyone could hear Rabbi Sacks, and hearing Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a historic moment,” said Ariela. “It was eye opening to see how other Federations work. I could see where our small piece fits into the very large jigsaw puzzle,” said Richard. Jeb Brilliant saw a quote by President Barack Obama that resonated with him at the African American History Museum: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Jeb mentions, “This was sort of an underlying theme because I attended a few sessions about teaching the next generation of givers to learn directly from their parents and grandparents. They were suggesting to bring multiple generations of higher donor families in to participate in the giving and learn from our elders.” Perhaps Sunny Zia’s words say it best. “Attending the GA lifted my spirits. I was equally pleased to see the Orthodox and folks on the more Conservative end of the spectrum in the community present. It was an honor being there on behalf of the Federation and the Lentzner fellows.”

A Time For Silence And A Time For Speaking By Rabbi David Cantor
These are the things that ye shall do: Speak ye to every man the truth with his neighbors; execute the Rabbi David Cantor best judgment of truth and peace in your gates. (Zechariah 8:16) Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel taught: “The world rests on three principles: On justice, on truth, and on peace. And all three are intertwined. When justice is done, truth is served and peace ensues.” (Jerusalem Talmud Ta’anit 4.2) That the telephone, computers, and our modern technology in general, have behavioral and ethical
implications is reflected in a late nineteenth-century Hasidic story about a rebbe who declared one day to his Hasidim, “There is a lesson to be learned from everything on God’s earth.” Thinking that the rebbe was speaking hyperbolically, a follower called out, “Oh, and what can we learn from the train?” “That because of being one minute late,” the rebbe answered, “You can lose everything.” “And from the telegraph?” another asked. “That for every word you pay.” “And from the telephone?” “That what we say here, is heard there.” (Joseph Telushkin)
Today, there is no hesitation whatsoever in between composing a Tweet, Facebook post, text message, or email and its publication to the entire wired world. The caution that one must be careful before posting or sending cannot be made strong enough, and some professionals advise their clients to return to pen and paper before sharing anything of a confidential nature. When I was asked to write this rabbinic reflection, I could think of nothing more important than a reminder that we must practice shemirat ha-lashon, the “guarding of the tongue.” We live in a time where
newsmen, politicians, and many, many others seem to have lost the connections between truth, accuracy, fairness, and reality. Bad information can lead to bad decision-making, and unkindness can lead to unfairness. Judge your words against two questions: Is it true? If what you are about to say, write, send, post, or tweet isn’t true, don’t. Is it peaceful? If what you are about to say, even though it is true, will lead to unkindness, unfairness, hurt feelings, damaged reputations, or anything negative, don’t. According to our Jewish Tradition, this world was brought into being through
words, starting with “Let there be light”; and there was light. Even without resorting to any weapons of mass destruction, we know that words have the potential to destroy worlds, not only the ground we live on, but our relationships with others. Who would you rather be: the person one goes to for the latest gossip, or the person who is known to be trustworthy, kind, generous, fair, judicious? May we all be guided to just and truthful, and spreaders of peace and calm. Amen.

JFCS - A Year in Review and Direction for the Future By Rick Burney, Jewish Family & Children’s Service - Board President
At our December Executive Board Meeting, we took the opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the year. In 2016, JFCS continued to serve as a welcome resource for people in need in our community who have nowhere else to turn for mental health counseling and emergency financial assistance. JFCS entered into a collaboration with 24Hr HomeCare to provide in-home care for seniors and people recovering from an injury or illness.
Our counseling services in the Downey schools expanded to include all of the high schools. JFCS also introduced two new board committees; the Resource Development Committee that oversees the JFCS fundraising and events, and the Outreach Committee, which promotes JFCS to organizations outside of our local Jewish Community in order to raise awareness of the agency and the work we do. Both committees hit the ground running in 2016 with the goal of sustaining JFCS
in years to come. Our annual Race With a View and RUNWAY: The Art of Design, were successful beyond measure with record turnouts and funds raised at each event. Our Friends Campaign reached out to our generous supporters as well as to people outside of our community in order to “get the word out” about JFCS. On November 15th, Cafe Europa was held, which is a luncheon for Holocaust survivors that allows the survivors to socialize with each other, the
JFCS staff, Board members and community members. JFCS provided Thanksgiving dinners to 17 families in Long Beach who would have otherwise gone hungry. The year ended with the “Adopta-Family” outreach, where board members, community organizations and generous donors buy holiday gifts for families who are in need. The future for JFCS is exciting. We will continue to provide all of our current services as we look to expand our reach. We will be meeting with doctors,
hospitals, schools, service clubs, and local officials to increase awareness of JFCS and make JFCS the “GoTo” referral site for people who need help. We are actively looking for growth opportunities for Older Adult Services to meet the needs of an aging population. Most of all, we are proud of our accomplishments and we are not content for JFCS to be that “best kept secret” in our area.
Set Specific Goals Your goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals are unhelpful because they don’t provide sufficient direction. Getting healthy is not specific. Losing 10 pounds by March 15th is specific. Make it as easy as you can to get where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up. Set Measurable Goals Include precise amounts, dates, and so on in your goals so you can measure your degree of success. “To walk 3 miles in 60 minutes, 4 times a week” is a goal that is measureable. Without a way to measure your success, you miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing you have actually achieved something. Set Attainable Goals Make sure that it is possible to achieve your goal. If you set a goal that is too difficult, like “losing 50 pounds by Children and teachers from the Alpert Jewish Community Center’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program February 1st,” you will only gathered to present JFCS with holiday gifts for two families in need. ECE families donated over $800 in tzedakah to provide toys, clothing, food, and other essentials for the two families. ECE teachers volunteered frustrate yourself and decrease their time to shop for the items and to wrap them festively. JFCS sends a heartfelt “Thank you!” to ECE your confidence. Resist the urge to set a goal that is too Program parents, children, teachers and staff who helped.
easy as it may prevent you from setting future goals that require more work. Set Relevant Goals Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. By keeping goals relevant to your own life and desires, you will stay more motivated. You have to want to accomplish the goal for you – not for anyone else! Set Time-Bound Goals Your goals must have a timeframe. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases, and you know when you can celebrate success. By making your New Year’s Resolution a SMART goal, it will be easier to accomplish. No matter what, it is important that you are patient with yourself and your progress. If you slip up, that’s okay. We all do. Just don’t let an occasional slip up hold you back from working on your goal. You have as many chances to succeed as you give yourself, so be generous, and find joy in the journey!
Achieving Success in Your 2017 Goals By Leslie R. Evans, LCSW, JFCS - Director of Social Work & Older Adult Services
As each year comes to a close, I often hear (and have said myself!), “Thank goodness this year is over; next year has got to be better!” Many of us look forward to the promise of a new calendar year and an open slate of hope and possibility. We set new goals and make New Year’s resolutions. For the first
few weeks (or days?), most of us usually do a good job of keeping on track. But so often we find that our resolutions are hard to keep. We were committed to the change when we made the resolution, so why can’t we sustain the positive changes? Change is not easy. It’s not just a matter of will or wanting
things to be different. Change takes hard work, practice, and patience. It also takes smart planning. The good news is that there are steps we can take to make our New Year’s Resolutions more successful. The key to any success is setting goals, SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time-Bound.

Message from the Executive Director
At the Alpert JCC, we are fortunate to celebrate two New Years – the Jewish New Year in the fall, Rosh Hashanah, and the secular New Year, January 1. Traditionally, many people take the time around Rosh Hashanah to make new resolutions and set out goals for the year. I think it’s great to have this second opportunity to take a step back and reevaluate the goals we set at Rosh Hashanah. We can choose to renew those goals, whether or not we were successful, or choose new goals if that’s where our heart leads us. Whatever your resolutions might be, we offer many ways for the Alpert JCC to be a part of your success. If your goal is to improve your health and wellness, we are Your Center for Fitness. We have top-of-the-line equipment in our Fitness Center, over 50 energizing group fitness classes, exceptional personal trainers, massage therapists, and fitness instructors to help you achieve your goals, and a wonderful aquatics program in our year-round heated pool. If your goal is to find a great place for your kids, we are Your Center for Youth. We have one of the best preschools around (we were named the “Best Preschool in Long Beach” by the Long Beach Post!), over 100 kids participate daily in our Kids’ University afterschool program, we have terrific camp programs for summer and vacation days, and BBYO and Maccabi are engaging programs for our teens. If your goal is personal and spiritual growth, we are Your Center for Jewish Life and Culture. AJCC Executive Director
AJCC STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Nicole Malina
Director of Development Nicole Malina is one of the newer additions to our AJCC family. She grew up in New York in a very strongly-identified Jewish family, and Jewish values were an integral part of her upbringing: Tzedakah, Tikkun Olam, and the value of welcoming the stranger were all very important to her family. These values have clearly remained important to her throughout her life. She had her Bat Mitzvah in Israel on Mount Scopus, and her B.A. is from NYU in Ethnic Studies with a focus on Judaic Studies. “After graduating,” Nicole explains, “I had a lot of different jobs, but I always had an interest in non-profit work. I always wanted to give back. After moving to San Francisco in 2000 to be closer to my family, who all live in California now, I started my non-profit career at the New Israel Fund. I particularly liked the development aspect of my work, and I enjoyed forming relationships and getting to know the donors, so I decided to stay in that arena. In 2004, I went to work at the JCC in San Francisco as their Development Administrator and learned a great deal about working in the Jewish Community. “After working at the JCCSF for 6 years, I wanted to move even closer to my parents, who are in LA. I moved down here in 2010 and ended up getting a position on the development team at the Aquarium of the Pacific. I absolutely fell in love with Long Beach. I really enjoyed being at the Aquarium, as my second passion is helping animals, but I always knew I would return to my roots. The head of development at the Aquarium was on the Jewish Federation Board of Directors, and I expressed to her my interest in getting involved with the local Jewish community. She nominated me for the Alpert New Leaders Forum, a fantastic experience and great program. ANLF led me to join both the Federation and Hillel boards. “I met our Executive Director, Jeffrey Rips when he came to the Federation board meetings representing the AJCC. He encouraged me to speak up in the meetings, and through meeting him, I had the opportunity to learn more about the J. I became interested in ways that I could help the AJCC with fundraising, and when the Director of Development position opened a year ago, I was eager to apply! I began at the J in February of 2016, and I love it here. It’s such a great place for me and has really become a second home. I love seeing the entire community congregate, from young to old. We play a part in every stage of people’s lives. I have made a lot of friends here, and I appreciate coming to work and seeing my wonderful colleagues. “As Director of Development, I’m able to give the community an opportunity to invest in the wonderful programs that we are so proud of. Our members and donors are so dedicated to the community, and I love being able to help them stay connected to this amazing place. I’m really grateful to be here.” And we are grateful to have Nicole’s high energy and enthusiasm so much a part of what makes the Alpert JCC such a special place to be. Nicole volunteers helping rescue animals, collects hip hop records, and lives in Belmont Heights with her two adorable cats, Pepper and Jersey Boy. - Interview by Erika Hillinger

The Jewish Impact on American History and Culture
ECE mom
Marisa Kantor is one of the enthusiastic and involved AJCC members who help make the J a wonderful community. Marisa and her husband, Madhava (Madhi), came here from Tucson in March of 2012 when he was accepted into the Kaiser Permanente School of Anesthesia. The first thing they wanted to do was find a great preschool for their children, Ari and Rona. They had come from a strong Jewish preschool in Tucson and were looking for something equivalent. What they found was even better! They knew when they toured the ECE here that is was “above and beyond the best preschool in the area.” In addition to an excellent preschool, Marisa explains, “we also saw that the sense of community here seemed really strong. And because we’re Jewish, we wanted a Jewish preschool. Although we moved here in March, the first available opening was in the summer session of 2012. Our kids were really young. Ari was just two, so he started in Side by Side, and moved up through all the levels. He’s six now and is in kindergarten. Rona, who will be five in January, is in the Pre-K now with Mr. Scott and Ms. Mott.

Artist’s Reception January 19, 7pm This visiting artist from New York, is famous for his work transforming Hebrew calligraphy.
“I felt like my parent participation here was somewhat normal until Madhi was hit by a 16-year-old uninsured driver and was in the hospital for 4 days and out of work for several months while he healed from the internal bleeding. That’s when the JCC community really sprang into full gear for us. [Previous Director] Linda Keiles, [current Director] Alayna Cosores, and [Executive Director] Jeffrey Rips all made it possible for us to stay in the preschool. Scott Sterling, an ECE dad and a lawyer, also stepped in and made sure that our legal needs were taken care of. I had heard that this was a good community, but that literally saved us. We could not have survived without the support of this community. We didn’t ask for any of this help—it just landed at our feet. And we are so grateful.

“After this I became more active in the preschool. I realized that everyone around us was chipping in however they could. I worked very hard with Linda, Alayna, and Jeffrey to help get voted best preschool in Long Beach by the Long Beach Post. That is something I’m really proud of. And I volunteer in all the basic things like cookie baking, book fair, etc. After thinking about other ways I could get involved, I realized that the unique way I could contribute was through social media. I saw that there was a real need for an ECE Facebook page. Flyers get ignored, lost in backpacks, misplaced, etc., and I thought to myself, ‘Why don’t I start a Facebook page so that people could always know what is going on?’ That way, all the information is in one place. I also wanted something that I could create so that when I leave next year, I can pass the torch and other parents can keep it going.
The 33rd Annual Norman Gottlieb Student Art Show
January 30-March 3 Awards Reception: Thurs, Feb. 23

Awards are presented to the top three participants from the middle and high school level. The Gottlieb show was established by past AJCC President Norman Gottlieb. The show is open and available for viewing by the entire community. For more information contact Shlomit Jackson.
“I recommend the ECE to everyone. It has gone so far above and beyond my expectations. We’re going to be so sad to leave here next year when Rona goes to Kindergarten. But we’ll continue on through camps and any way we can to stay actively involved. I’m guessing that the connections we’ve made here will last a - Interview by Erika Hillinger lifetime.”

Local Educator Comes Full Circle: Meet Mrs. Jenna Sagan Jenna Sagan is in her second year as a distinguished staff member at the Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach, CA. She grew up in Huntington Beach, where she attended the Academy of the Performing Arts at Huntington Beach High School while her family were members at the local Temple Beth David. Following High School, she attended the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, where her areas of focus included education and acting. Mrs. Sagan completed her graduate education at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion’s Rhea Hirsch School of Education. She received her Judaic Studies Certification and a California State Teaching Credential for Kindergarten8th Grade in 2009. She strongly believes every child, with the proper support, has the ability to learn and succeed. Jenna is excited to work in an environment that combines her religious and educational background. General and Judaic Studies. We create large “Project Based Learning” activities that allow students to connect their Jewish learning to the General Studies classroom. For instance, we used the Tu B’Shvat holiday for an in depth look at trees. Some highlights included the creation of a portfolio of scientific study of trees and plants, a tree research project, planting flower gardens, explorations, text studies from the Torah and a special family tree. I truly believe that the Hebrew Academy is the place for me, both as a teacher and as a lifelong learner where the students are given a wellrounded General and Judaic Studies education that is designed to challenge them every day. Every teacher that I work with is deeply committed to providing our students with the highest possible level of educational instruction, and it is a joy to see all our students continue to grow and excel!” The Hebrew Academy is proud to have a local talented professional to teach at the school. Dr. Harari, the Hebrew Academy principal said at the auction, “Let’s face it, the jobs and careers our students

The teaching and learning environment at The Hebrew Academy must reflect these goals.” The Alevy Family pledged a generous amount of $250,000 to further improve the middle school program on the foundation of the new advanced learning platform and wanting to produce the future scholars of tomorrow.

Dr. David Ruderman
For the sixteenth year in a row, the CSULB Jewish Studies Program is proud to sponsor a talk by the Orange County One Month Community Scholar. It will be held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 7:30 pm. This year’s visiting scholar is Dr. David Ruderman, the Joseph Meyerhoff Professor of Modern Jewish History & the Ella Darivoff Director of the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ruderman is a highly accomplished historian who has been recognized with multiple awards for his scholarship and accolades for his teachings.
His talk is entitled “Kabbalah and Science at the Dawn of Modernity.” For Jews throughout their long history, nature was a critical resource for their own spirituality and faith. For centuries, Jews engaged directly in magic, astrology/ astronomy and medicine. Many Jews even became important physicians in the Muslim and Christian Middle Ages. When the famous medical school of Padua, Italy first opened its doors to Jewish students in the sixteenth century, Jews took full advantage of this new educational and professional opportunity. In the modern era, Jews excelled not only in medicine but in the other sciences as the disproportionate number of Jewish noble prize winners easily testifies. Dr. Ruderman’s talk deals with the engagement of Jews with the natural world, exploring the paths of rabbis and kabbalists who were inspired by the physical world in which they lived. As always, Jewish Studies talks are free and open to the public. There is no need to RSVP. For more information, contact Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger at Jeffrey.Blutinger@csulb.edu.
