The Cultural War Against Israel is a Cultural War Against Jews By Matthew Simmons, Guest Columnist

I have been told the second you compare something to Nazi Germany, you might as well raise your hands up and surrender, because you just lost all the points you made. However, the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctioning of Israel movement (BDS) hits so close to Nazi Germany’s Nuremberg Laws, the comparisons are impossible to ignore. In 1933 Hitler instituted the anti-Jewish decree that, “Civil servants who are not of Aryan descent are to be retired.” And in 1935, Jews were legally prohibited from, “voting on political matters and cannot hold public office.” Eighty years later, in 2015, Jewish student leaders were discriminated against across the nation. Many were asked to remove themselves from voting on political matters and were subsequently questioned about their ‘dual allegiances’ interfering with their elected positions. One year after UCLA voted to boycott and divest from Israel, a Jewish student was nearly denied a position on the student government. Members of the student council lamented that while, “Bedya was qualified, her affiliations with Jewish groups on campus were concerning.” Bedya was President-Elect of a Jewish sorority and a member of Hillel. One member of the Student Council said, “It’s not her fault that she’s part of a community. That’s fine. But she is part of a community (the Jewish Community) that is very invested in specific outcomes and I can’t separate those two from being not together.”

At my alma mater, UC Santa Cruz, a similar incident occurred. One year after BDS legislation was approved, a Jewish student received numerous threats to abstain from voting on BDS legislation, because he had a “Jewish agenda.” Before the Nuremberg Laws, Hitler controlled the narrative through the Sturmbeilung, also known as the brown shirts. The Sturmbeilung would disrupt the meetings and rallies of his opponents with violence. I remember being shocked the first time Prime Minister Netanyahu was forced

to cancel his speech at UC Berkeley in 2000, due to security concerns from violent protestors; however, now taking away free speech from those who are demonized is normal. Just a few weeks ago, Jewish students at UC Irvine were chased away from the screening of “Beneath the Helmet” by a horde of raging ‘protestors’. A Jewish student escaped the mob, found a safe spot, called her mom, and through an emotional cloud of choked back tears, she could only utter, “…Protestors…” Her mother frantically told her to call the police. This young Jewish student named Ms. Kopley did just that and asked the police to escort her through the crowd so she could watch the film screening. The protestors had the goal to demoralize the Jewish student body by isolating Israel, instead a Jewish hero emerged, and she would not let the light be extinguished. We have seen what happens when the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctioning of Israel movement spreads its wings on college campuses. Jewish leaders are silenced and asked to step down. We need to work together to ensure that the BDS movement does not invade corporate America, because what will follow is discriminating against Israel and asking American Jewish business leaders to step down. There is currently anti-BDS legislation to prevent companies from demonizing Israel. Thankfully, we do not need to walk through a wave of violent protestors to combat antiSemitism like Ms. Kopley did at UC Irvine. All you need to do is pick up the phone, call our legislators, and let them know you proudly support Israel and you support the Anti-BDS legislation bill (CA Assembly Bill 2844). You can use your freedom to stop discrimination or you can take your freedom for granted, but you cannot do both.

Jewish Federation’s Outgoing and Incoming President Remarks Hank Feldman Outgoing Jewish Federation Board President

I have many updates and thank you’s to hand out as I reflect upon what we’ve accomplished this past year. I’d first like to thank Jim Breslauer for his kind words and for doing such a great job working with his committee to execute the nomination process for the Board. I’d also like to recognize the 13 graduates of this year’s Alpert New Leaders Forum (one of them includes my very own son). Nicole Malina and Felice Shohet did a wonderful job chairing the program, and Sharon Kenigsberg worked tirelessly to make sure that these graduates have the necessary tools to help strengthen our community. The generosity of Barbara and Ray* Alpert have produced over 90 graduates from this program, and is among the reasons we can all be here tonight to continue our work together. Of course, I also want to recognize my current board, and thank each of you for your continual commitment, devotion, and enthusiasm. We have accomplished so much this year, and I would specifically like to highlight our fundraising and event programming achievements. In terms of fundraising, we allocated over $2.1 million dollars to over 20 local and overseas partner agencies for basic operating needs. I must acknowledge the Chair of the Fund Development Committee, Craig Kain for his diligence over the past

three years as a big reason why this all could happen. Furthermore, our allocations included $35,000 dollars to synagogue education programs and $54,900 dollars in priority program grants. These funds are making a difference in multiple subsets of our community and we are very proud of that. Thank you to Incoming President Daryl Phillips and his committee members for overseeing the allocations process. We have also seen excellent results from the third year of our PJ Library Program. We are happy to say that 3,504 free Jewish themed books were delivered to 292 families this year. A hearty thank you to our partners on this initiative: the Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC), Congregation Shir Chadash, Temple Israel, and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. It has been inspiring to see the growth of the “Fund For Our Future” Campaign during my presidency. In collaboration with the Foundation, this program has raised over $3 million in program and capital funds, in addition to the Foundation’s Legacy promises of over $10 million dollars. I must say, we may be most proud of the work we have done to secure and plan for the future of our Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. Over the past five years, we have allocated $1,220,000 dollars to capital improvements and long-term maintenance. Shari Nemirow has been leading the process on this for many years and we cannot thank her enough

for seeing it all through. It’s hard to believe our agencies have been in this building for over 17 years. It is also clear that we must always consider how to properly maintain the campus as it ages. Luckily, we have worked hard alongside the AJCC and JFCS (Jewish Family & Children’s Services) over the past two years to create and begin to execute a comprehensive plan to address the campus’s needs. Thank you to Stuart Friedman for chairing these efforts. On the event side, there are several that we can proudly say were hits. We hosted Israeli Consul General David Siegel and had over 400 community members and dignitaries in attendance. Thank you to Linda Simmons for chairing this event. We also had over 300 people in attendance for the Annual Campaign Kickoff Opening Night in conjunction with the AJCC/Long Beach Jewish Film Festival. The Men’s Philanthropy “Above and Beyond” campaign event drew 150 attendees, and the “Arlene Solomon VISIONS Dinner” campaign fundraiser had 270 people in attendance. Sherri Selmanson and Gail Levy deserve all credit for chairing this 20th anniversary affair. Furthermore, we had several other successful Women’s Philanthropy outreach events and I want to recognize Leslie Kern for her leadership. There are so many people I have not mentioned who have done a great deal to put us in the position that we are in this evening.

I want to offer deserving accolades to my predecessor, the Honorable Past President Hank Feldman. You have accomplished a great deal these past 3 years by identifying and advancing the Jewish Federation’s needs and issues. You brought awareness to the entire community at large regarding what the Jewish Federation is about and what we do.

My Jewish Motivations So how did I wind up as the Incoming President of the Jewish Federation? I’m proud to be a native son of our city. My grandparents settled in Long Beach where they started a simple recycling and metal business that is still in full operation today, some 100 plus years ago. My parents and grandparents were founding members of Temple Israel and this very Jewish Community Center. I spent my youth here participating in day camp & other programs. My wife Sandy and I joined a Young Leadership Group that resulted in the Federation Tower Apartments for affordable senior housing, as well as the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus and the Alpert Jewish Community Center building. Leadership, and so forth. I learned early on you do not say “no” to Sharon! One day, I received a call to join the Board of Directors. I also knew to never say “no” to Jim Breslauer, a former Jewish Federation Board President. There are so many others that inspire me. I knew each and every one of my predecessors whose photos are on display in the hallway leading to the executive offices. These are the men and women that influenced and mentored me. I share their dreams and visions for the future of our home - this beautiful campus. Hopes For Everyone I can’t do this alone though. Our staff members and agency executive directors are experts and committed, but we also need your help! Together, we will continue to grow our relationships with Partner Agencies to ensure a strong Jewish future. We will increase our fundraising to expand our ability to serve those in need and to strengthen Jewish community. We will refine our policies and practices to create the most efficient organization possible. And, we will take increased responsibility as the owner of the facility, to ensure that we are putting as many resources possible towards the long-term viability of our beautiful home, which serves as an important hub of our community. I humbly ask for needing your help. Whenever I call, please say “yes.” It takes an entire Jewish community to ensure the prosperity and success of our future generations tomorrow.

ANNUAL REPORT Jewish Community Foundation Year in Review Rick Freeman Jewish Community Foundation Board President

It’s that time of the year again. I’m completely honored and excited to start my second term as the President of the Jewish Community Foundation. First off, I want to express thanks to our outgoing Board members: Joyce Feldman and Howard Weiss. The outstanding work you both have done for this organization is deeply valued and has never gone unnoticed. Our whole Jewish community appreciates you both dearly. I also would like to welcome our two newest members joining the Foundation Board: Aaron Kern and Judy Cooper. I’m looking forward to the contributions and insight you two will provide as brand new voices to the Foundation’s team.

Foundation Committees Jan Stein, Chair of the Legacy Committee, has had a busy and fruitful year. Jan and his amazing committee organized this year’s Legacy Society Brunch, which turned out to be a great success. For those who are not aware, the Legacy Society is composed of members from our community that have made a Letter of Intent to leave a bequest in their will or trust, of any size, to the Foundation. This year, we had three new members in attendance. Last time I checked, we now have over $25,000,000 in promises for our future. Under Jan’s continued guidance, the Legacy Committee continued with its education efforts by hosting a successful Retirement Planning Seminar last fall, as well as a Professional Advisors Luncheon that occurred this past May. These events gave the Foundation more visual exposure to broaden our outreach to potential donors.

Staff Spotlight

Message from the Executive Director Sunday, June 12, was the holiday of Shavuot, which commemorates when G-d gave the Torah to the Jewish people. In addition to the Torah being the Jewish people’s history, it also includes the 10 commandments (and many others)—which are basic guidelines on how we should treat each other and ourselves. The stark contrast from the joy and celebration of Shavuot to the horrible tragedy in Orlando is really almost too much to comprehend. I am greatly disturbed and saddened by the despicable acts of terror from two weeks ago. I mourn the senseless loss of many innocent people, and send warm thoughts and prayers to the families, friends, and loved ones of all the victims. Today, and every day, we stand strongly with the LBGTQ and Latino communities, the people from Orlando, and anyone else who has been affected by this or any other senseless loss of life. It is acts like this that remind me of what a special place and community we have at the Alpert JCC. I am proud that the Alpert JCC is an oasis in our world: a place where everyone is not only welcome, but warmly welcomed. No matter the color of one’s skin, the religion they practice, or their sexual orientation, our doors and our community are open to all. It is our collective efforts that enable the Alpert JCC to be that warm and welcoming environment to all. Thank you to all of our staff and our members for sharing in our vision to make the Alpert JCC a Jewish neighborhood and gathering place that exemplifies the values shared with us in the Torah. It is these values that allow the Alpert Jewish Community Center to be Your Center For Life.

Youth, Teen, Sports & Camp Director Natalie Chernik truly grew up at the Alpert JCC. She starting coming here in preschool at age 2 and participated in Camp Kadima until age 10. Her mom worked here as Joe Parmet’s (Executive Director from 1973 – 1998) assistant, and because Natalie would hang out after school here, Joe decided that it would be good to have an afterschool program for older kids (what is now Kids’ University). As a young teen, Natalie frequently volunteered at different events at the JCC, and she would help out serving water and coffee. When she was about 15, Susan Paletz asked if she wanted to work at summer camp. She said, “Sure!” and has been here ever since! She has taught art and science, been a CIT supervisor, worked in the after-school program, became Youth and Teen Program Coordinator, and then about four years ago, she was named the Youth, Teen and Camp Director. Last summer, Sports was added to her title. She is a very busy woman! Natalie has tremendous passion for everything she does, and she is vibrant with enthusiasm as she explains that what she really loves about working here is that “the staff truly care about the kids. We all work here because we truly want to work here. No one is in it for the money. JFCS Seeks Awareness of Mental Health and Agency Programs This year, the JFCS board and staff have been very focused on opportunities to heighten awareness of the agency and its unique role in the fabric of our area. The past few weeks have been full of opportunities for JFCS to expand awareness of our programs. May was National Mental Health Awareness Month, and on May 1st, JFCS kicked it off in grand style with our best-attended Race With A View ever. It was particularly encouraging

to have 30 teams walking and running, and for many participants it was their first exposure to the work of our agency. JFCS joined a coalition of businesses and agencies, including MHA The Village and Downtown Long Beach Associates, in “Mind Your Mind”, a month- long series of events to highlight the importance of access to mental health services for everyone in our community. Our activities included outreach events at

Renaissance High School and downtown Long Beach targeting tourism/hospitality workers. The Long Beach City Council also issues a proclamation supporting “Mind Your Mind.” Also in May, JFCS was invited to participate as an exhibitor in Molina Healthcare’s Long Beach Health Care Symposium where Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia was a guest speaker. We made a presentation about our

programs and services to the Assistance League of Long Beach at their monthly meeting. JFCS was featured in an article on mental health for children in the May 24 – June 6 electronic edition of the Long Beach Business Journal. You can read the article online at www.lbbizjournal.com. And Board Members Debbie Feldman, Nancy Linden, and Wendy Manasse teamed up to host a morning meet-andgreet for AJCC’s ECE parents on June 1 to familiarize them

with the services available at our office just upstairs. How can you get involved? We are available to provide a presentation at a lunch meeting, offer a workshop on managing stress, or to collaborate with other non-profits to fill gaps in services for each other. What Are You Doing This Summer? By Rabbi Galit Levy-Slater

A visitor who recently attended my services asked, “You’re very new. What are Rabbi Galit you, Reform?” Levy-Slater The answer I gave him, “We are Universalist,” gave him pause, so I continued, “We do not believe in ‘labels’.” My Jewish education has been as diverse as the demographics in which I was raised. I am a native Californian who became a JewBy-Choice at the age of 33. I grew up in Hollywood, studied voice from the age of 11, sang operas by the age of 15, and spent several years performing Musical Theater, acting, dance, modelling . . . you get the idea. My early Jewish education was through the Reform Movement, with the objective of becoming a cantor. During one summer in the mid1980’s, I took an Ulpan at the

University of Judaism (now the American Jewish University) and eventually the Cantorial Workshop, taught by Cantor William Sharlin z”l through Hebrew Union College. Most of my cantorial career was with Reform congregations until I was hired by Congregation Sholom of Leisure World in Seal Beach, a Conservative shul, where I remained until this year. My association with Congregation Sholom of Leisure World was more of a familial one than a “hired gun,” as my husband would say. Over the years, I saw many rabbis come and go; some retired, some semi-retired, some students who only stayed for a year or two before moving on to more lucrative positions During those years, I moved into Leisure World and viewing all those “commuter rabbis” who had no ties to the community, I made the decision to become a rabbi and serve the entire

Leisure World community, those affiliated with my shul, as well as those not affiliated. I found a school, based in New York, that offered a rabbinic program that fit my situation perfectly. I found Jewish Universalism. I was familiar with Universalism, but what is Jewish Universalism. It is not Reform; it is not Orthodox; it is not Conservative; it is not Reconstructionist; it is not New Wave; it is not Humanist, nor is it Renewal; it is not Ashkenazic or Sephardic, and not Am Mizrachi. It is none of them, yet it is all of them. Rabbi Steven Blane, Founder of the Union of Jewish Universalist Communities said:

“Jewish Universalism comprised of progressively minded Rabbis and their communities wherein all are welcome to belong, participate, and nurture the greater good without any

obstacles, requirements or strings- just compassion and love for all of humankind through the lens of Judaism.” My new congregation, Beit HaLev, House of the Heart, accepts Jewish people, people who call themselves “spiritual but not religious,” interfaith members, and we have members who are nonJewish but who find our worship services meaningful. Jewish leaders all over the world have been bemoaning the merging and the closing of synagogues due to an overall lack of interest and a feeling of exclusion. In Jewish Universalism, we offer progressive combined with traditional liturgy, and the embrace of Am Yisraeil.
