Women’s Philanthropy - What A Year! Leslie Kern Chair, Jewish Federation Women’s Philanthropy

W

omen’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation is a place for women’s leadership, empowerment and philanthropy. The Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet, chose the theme of Engagement for this year’s activities. Cabinet members each took an active role in engaging women in our community to become aware of the work of Women’s Philanthropy, partnering with local agencies for social action projects and recognizing women from throughout our community. The members of this year’s cabinet were: Barbara Alpert, Joyce Feldman, Arlene Freeman, Lauren Friedman, Alicia Friedmann, Sandy Horwitz, Nancy Kaplan, Ariela Laibson, Gail Levy, Deborah Lewis, Nancy Linden, Wendy Manasse Wiese, Shari Nemirow, Stephany Rosenthal, Dana Schneider, Sherri Selmanson, Melissa Selmanson, Leslie Shiffman, Barbara Shoag, Linda Simmons, Marla Smalewitz, Sybil Tamaroff, and Myrna Simon.

Intergenerational Luncheon, Co-Chaired by Melissa Selmanson and Ariela Laibson.

Our goal was to focus on the many ways women could utilize their time, talents and treasures for the benefit of the Jewish Community- locally and around the world. We provided educational and social programs to engage Jewish women while also supporting our local Jewish agencies. At the core of Women’s Philanthropy is the support of the people who are served by the programs and services funded by Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign. Partnering With Our Local Agencies Women’s Philanthropy partnered with Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JFCS) on several projects this year. In November, women gathered at a private home to “Cut for a Cause”. This project helps women experiencing domestic violence. In December, we were part of the Adopt a Family program which provided gifts

and gift cards to 70 families in need. In March, women helped deliver Shabbat Meal meals to needy individuals (made possible by a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation). We also participated in conducting a Passover Seder for residents of Sunrise Senior Living, and, in May, Women’s Philanthropy had a team for JFCS’s Race with a View which raised funds for mental health programs.

At the 20th Anniversary of the Arlene Solomon VISIONS Dinner on March 31st, we honored thirteen women, nominated by their synagogues and organizations who change our community, our world and are a force to be reckoned with every day.

Twenty-eight women attended a Wine and Cheese Reception prior to attending the lecture with Laura Silver, “Knish: In Search of Jewish Soul Food”. This lecture was part of the CSULB Jewish Studies Lecture Series (co-sponsored by the Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC) and Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County). In addition, we encouraged women to donate and support Beach Hillel by contributing to their Shabbat meals and food pantry. We participated in the AJCC Women’s Weekend; and volunteered at Federation’s Opening Night and the Israel Consul General Event. Gardening tools were collected for the Children Today School during our annual Arlene Solomon VISIONS Dinner and used as centerpieces. Engaging Women to Become Aware of the Work of Women’s Philanthropy Telling the story of how we serve people all over the world takes time and we offered several gatherings to reach out to women in smaller groups and tell our story. In February we had an Intergenerational Luncheon at Shenandoah Café and this past month we had “Coffee, Cake and Conversation” at a private home and heard the story of two women who were originally from Moldova and were helped by our international partners, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the American Joint Distribution Committee. Recognizing Women Philanthropists & Leaders In January, we had a reception for Frieda Rapoport Caplan, a truly inspirational community leader, prior to a screening of the documentary film, Fear No Fruit, about her life and success.

Prior to VISIONS, we had receptions for all Women of Vision, Past Women’s Philanthropy Chairs and Past Chairs of the VISIONS Committee, whose reflections about the work we do inspired the video, “Give What You Can Now” shown at this year’s VISIONS event. If you missed it you can view it at jewishlongbeach. org/visions We also recognize women by offering various recognition societies. Nationally, Jewish Federations of North America Women’s Philanthropy brings women all over the world together for conferences, women’s missions to Israel and opportunities to share and learn from each other. The Lion of Judah Society and Pomegranate Society are two national groups that we have here in our community that engage in projects to meet the needs of Jewish women locally, in Israel, and in 60 countries around the world. A Lion of Judah gives a minimum gift of $5,000 to the Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign and a Pomegranate gives a minimum gift of $1,800. We have several events planned for the Lions and Pomegranates this summer and we celebrated Sukkot together last fall. We also have recognition levels of Shomrim, a minimum gift of $1,000, Tormim, a minimum gift of $500 and Chaverim, a minimum gift of $180. We plan to have special events for these groups in the future. Getting Involved We welcome you to bring your talent’s to Women’s Philanthropy and help us do good; raise money and have fun at the same time. What Are You Doing This Summer? By Rabbi Abba Perelmuter

Summer vacation is quickly approaching. Our students will spend a Rabbi Abba long summer Perelmuter recess away from the daily structure of school. We all understand the benefits of a restful break, but it’s a good idea for parents to examine how the hours will be spent. It says in Psalms, “so teach us to number our days, so that we may get us a heart of wisdom.” What King David is telling us is

that wasting time with idleness will keep wisdom at bay. To truly grow in wisdom, a person must be engaged in useful, enriching activities. Which parent doesn’t want that for their child? In a world where we can get lost in hours of television viewing, or “binge watching” as we call it, counting our hours and “numbering our days” is important. What is more enriching than Jewish summer camp? Jewish summer camp offers fun, exciting, stimulating, and interesting activities. I know this

from personal experience! I spent 10 summers at Jewish overnight camp. I counted the minutes from fall to summer, waiting anxiously to join my friends at camp. But camp wasn’t just a way for my parents to get me out of the house; camp is where we found ourselves. Camp is where we became the people that we are today. Attending a Jewish summer camp has the power to instill Jewish values and wisdom that will remain with the campers for the rest of their lives. I call on young families to

make the choice to enroll their children in Jewish summer camp and I call on the community to help make it affordable for the young families. Ten weeks of vacation time is too precious to waste. This is an opportunity to make “wise” children who will value Judaism. Staff Spotlight

Message from the Executive Director June is here, and it is going to be another fantastic summer at the Alpert JCC! The Alpert JCC is so fortunate to have our very own Camp Komaroff (June 20-August 19), so that this generation of children has the same opportunities I had growing up. Once again, our campers will be able to choose from almost 30 different Chugim (special interest groups) offered throughout the summer. In addition, there will be exciting weekly themes, fun-filled field trips, Park Days, Beach Days, Mitzvah Days, Late Nights, Overnights, and of course our favorite Funky Fridays and Shabbat activities. It’s times like this that I wish I was young again; going to Camp Komaroff for a week or two—or the entire summer—sounds amazing!!! To me, all the programs and trips are great, but one of the most important aspects of summer camp is that it gives kids a chance to explore, learn, and try new things in a safe and secure environment. Camp Komaroff is fully accredited and provides a wonderful environment due to our exceptional, welltrained camp staff, our top-notch camp leadership, and the beautiful and safe Alpert JCC facilities. Sending your child to Camp Komaroff is a gift that extends past this summer. Your child will learn, make friends, and be part of a nurturing environment that is full of excitement, good values, and adventure. Most important, your child will have the time of their life! In addition to Camp Komaroff, the J will again be your place for a Summer of Fun, which kicks off on June 21 at 5:30 with our first Member Appreciation Barbecue at the pool. This event is free to members and $5 per plate for nonmembers. We will be serving hot dogs, vegan hot dogs, burgers, chips, fruit and drinks. Summer of Fun includes Tuesday Theme Nights at the Pool, Thursday Pizza Nights, a Member Ice Cream Social, Popsicles in the Promenade, Family Movie Nights, and more! Check our website for dates and times. I’m looking forward to a great summer here at the AJCC. Check our website and your weekly email for all the latest information and updates. I look forward to seeing you around the Alpert JCC, Your Center For Life.

Irene Velasquez Membership Associate

Irene started working at the JCC in April 2012 and has been going full force ever since. She started in babysitting and then decided she would like to move into member services. In her second year here, Jeffrey Rips identified her potential and her wonderful ability to shine around people, and she became the customer service lead. Irene was trained on schedule and payroll, and then she became Customer Relations’ Supervisor. In 2013, she became a part of the membership department and she began to do tours and rentals. At the end of 2014, she became the Membership Associate, where she was in charge of tours, member changes, updating member information, in addition to rentals. She also organizes membership fundraisers. Irene graduated from Long Beach Poly in 2006, and when she was there she took ROP programs which included animal caretaking, child development, and retail merchandising, where she really excelled. This led to her first job at America Eagles Outfitters and then later at JC Penney. She was a retail merchandiser for 6 years. Irene explains, “This training helped me a lot because I was in customer service and learned how important it is to always be providing good customer service. One of the things I love to see is how engaged the staff is with the members. It’s great to see Jeffrey interacting with the members and guests, and the member relations team always greets people as they come and go. It’s a very friendly community.” There are many facets to her job here, and, she says, “I’m really enjoying the rental side of my position at the J. I get to meet a lot of new people and learn something all the time about the community that we serve. There are different religions, different beliefs, and different backgrounds. We recently had an Indian wedding where I learned a lot about that culture. I’m also helping the J build relationships with other organizations such as FoodFinders, the Red Cross, CSULB, and Long Beach Children’s Theater. As sad as it is, I also help with funeral services, and I am glad that I can help the families through a difficult time, and that we are a facility that can accommodate them last minute. We are able to help the community and I enjoy that. There’s so much diversity in the community here. We are building relationships with a lot of different people, and that makes this a great place to work.” - Interview by Erika Hillinger

Ride for the Living

Friday, June 3, 9am-12pm

Ride For The Living is a unique event where participants cycle 55 miles (90 km) from the iconic Auschwitz-Birkenau gate to the Jewish Community Centre of Krakow (JCC Krakow). Ride For The Living honors the Holocaust while celebrating the renewal of contemporary Jewish life in Poland today. JCC Krakow members, staff, volunteers, and friends from around the world will come together to raise awareness and funds for Krakow’s Jewish community. Ride For The Living is an annual event under the patronage of Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, who in 2016 will lead the event himself. “When Jews around the world consider Poland, they have an obligation to not only remember the past, but also to recognize the work being done to bring as many Jews here in Poland back to the Jewish people. The Ride For The Living is so important because Jewish life in Poland is flourishing - a miracle considering anti-Semitism in Europe today. Jewish communities around Poland are growing, and while we acknowledge our loss as a people here, we must focus on the future,” explains Rabbi Schudrich. JCC Krakow will partner with the JCC Association to offer a satellite Ride For The Living program at participating JCCs on Friday, June 3, concurrent with the Ride in Poland. The AJCC will hold a dedicated Ride For The Living spin class where participants can cycle to support Ride participants in Poland while learning about the renewal of Jewish life happening in Krakow and across Poland. To register for the Ride For Living Spin Class or for more information, contact Fred Johnson, fjohnson@alpertjcc.org or (562) 426-7601, ext. 1056

RUNWAY Returns September 15! Mark your calendars for RUNWAY on September 15! Now in its third year, this much-anticipated fashionthemed event has become a community favorite, and this year’s program, themed “The Art of Design”, will be no exception. Walking the RUNWAY this year will be designs created by students in the fashion design programs at

Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach. Students will submit a finished garment that is their original design from a classroomapproved project from the 2015-2016 academic year. The submissions will then be adjudicated by the RUNWAY Committee, and those selected will be modeled on the runway during one of the segments of the program.

“We thought it would be an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the amazing talent of our young, local designers. An extra bonus is that they will invite their friends and family to the event, and it’s a great opportunity to introduce them to JFCS and the important role the agency plays in providing counseling and support services in the Long

Beach area,” said Wendy Manasse, Chief RUNWAY Visionary. Manasse and her husband, David Wiese, generously underwrite the entire cost of the event so that 100% of the proceeds go to JFCS in support of the agency’s programs. The program will include a look at trends for fall fashion from Macy’s, as well as an inside view of the impact of

JFCS on the lives of those who seek help from the agency. Tickets will go on sale July 1st. For more information, visit jfcsrunway.com or call (562) 427-7916.

The 3D Printed Cone

Have you heard people talk about 3D printers? Have you wondered how they work? A 3D printer is a plastic manipulator. It works like a hot glue gun, by extruding extremely small fibers of plastic and molding those fibers into commonly recognizable shapes. The Hebrew Academy

recently purchased a 3D printer for our middle school. The middle school program is designed around Project Based Learning and the printer (purchased through our Alevy Family grant) gives us the opportunity to recreate physical objects, utilize scientific instruments, and personalize rigorous computer instruction. Students work with a Computer Assisted Design (CAD) program to create the blueprint for an object to be printed. The object is then taken into another program and “sliced.” This process allows the student to determine how quickly, at what size, and at what density to print the object. In our middle school, this 3D printer was on deck in time for the creation of

“authentic” artifacts for our upcoming Renaissance Faire. In the months to come, we know the students will have the skills necessary to program and design entire projects using the 3Dprinter to create worlds of teaching and learning opportunities. Our in-depth, hands-on learning environment is not limited to the middle school students. The high school calculus teacher used a 3D cone, cut into sections, as a tangible expression of a mathematical concept. The students were able to more concretely see the concepts of parabolas and hyperbolas. As the teacher, Mrs. Newman, explains, “Calculus features a teaching standard about understanding the intersection between a plane

and a cone. This is often a difficult concept for students to grasp.” Another way the 3D printer is utilized is through the applications it has for Jewish lessons. For example, the elementary school teachers will have their students design and print custom-made mezuzah covers with the 3D printer. At The Hebrew Academy, we encourage students to seek new and exciting learning opportunities. We then guide our students to logically look at their experiences with a desire to gain more knowledge. Through this instructional process, called Constructivism, our students and teachers build learning capacity in each other. We provide our students and

teachers the autonomy to seek these creative learning opportunities. Bill Gates has suggested that because his teachers allowed him to try new things and address learning in a way it benefitted him, as well as the school, tremendously. Gates was allowed to think outside of the box and become a peer learner with students and teachers alike. As Gates’ school did, The Hebrew Academy is a learning environment filled with current technology, wonder, curiosity and a philanthropic spirit. If you would like to come visit the school to see our students and teachers in action, please contact Mrs. Nelli Greenspan at (714) 898-0051 or email via nelli@hacds.org.
