By Rachel Kaplan, Executive Director, Long Beach Hillel On Wednesday, May 10th, 20 student senators and 2 staff members voted on a resolution in student government to divest from specific companies in Israel. The vote was 15-7 in favor of divestment. The resolution was presented over a 4 week period and, each week, student senate allowed for 15 minutes of public comments to help “hear the voice of the campus.” Week after week, students prepared 30-second statements to help convey their sadness and disappointment in the student senate for bringing forward a resolution which specifically targeted Israel, the only Jewish state. Students spoke about their love for Israel, the connection to it’s history, their pride in being Jewish, and their hopes for peace in the Middle East. Although the resolution passed, it was one where many hearts and mindsets were brought into the conversation of BDS campus legislation over a span of many months and its impact on our Jewish students coming together to confront these perpetrated acts against their authentic Jewish selves, Israeli heritage, and Jewish self-determinization. Our local students did not waver in their determination to stand united with Israel. The room was packed, with people spilling out into the hallway. Even when public comments were extended to twenty minutes, the forty-two students who wanted to speak were limited to a speaking time of only thirty seconds. Our students spoke with passion and conviction about their values, their love of Israel and their condemnation of the resolution that clearly only targeted Israel’s right to exist. What This Means For CSULB The CSULB president, Dr. Jane Conoley, made a very firm public statement before the resolution was brought forward. This resolution does not align with the university’s goals of a more inclusive campus and, therefore, the administration will not support the resolution. Dr. Conoley made it clear that singling out and targeting the Jewish community on campus has no place at CSULB and, therefore, they would not support the outcome of the resolution. Although the divestment resolution passed in student government, the university will not be changing any of its investment policies at this time.
Beach Hillel Students on Campus as part of Israel Week.
What This Means For Beach Hillel Next Year There is a lot of work ahead of us!! We are so proud of our students who spent weeks defending their Jewish pride and homeland. Now, more than ever, we must continue to grow our vibrant community on campus. The climate is tense, we have seen more swastikas on campus this year than in the past, and Beach Hillel will continue to educate the campus and our students. More programs, more staff, more learning!!! Over the summer, through the University Student Services, Beach Hillel will be providing a Jewish ally training for all students involved in student affairs. This is only one example of new programs we are already bringing to campus.

Arlene Solomon Visions dinner is a Jewish Federation Women’s Philanthropy Annual Community Campaign event that brings together women from the community to celebrate women’s power to care for the vulnerable, to commit to the survival of the Jewish people, to invest in the future of our children, and to rescue those in need no matter where they live, or how they worship. This year’s theme was “Let’s Gather”. It was a an amazing gathering. Over 280 women, plus some men, came together to honor 15 women from every Jewish organization in our community. The stories of these honorees were inspiring. Women’s Philanthropy also introduced a new community wide mitzvah
project “Shabbat Meals on Wheels” that will start in the fall. Women’s Philanthropy is inspired and guided by our tradition of tzedakah (righteousness/charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world). Along with the 157 Jewish Federations in North America, we seek to provide significant opportunities for women to affirm their Jewish identity and spirituality, to be proactive in evolving issues of concern to women, to engage new leaders, and to inspire other Jewish women by our examples. We welcome more women to get involved in Women’s Philanthropy and its projects. Please call Sharon Kenigsberg at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008 for more information.

Above & Beyond is the Jewish Federation Men’s Philanthropy Annual Community Campaign event for men across our Jewish community to honor, learn and share the strength we have together, to care for the vulnerable and to invest in the future of our children. The event was a truly great night honoring 13 amazing men from our local Jewish community agencies and synagogues, for their many contributions in going “above and beyond”. There were over 120 men and some women in attendance. Sasha Strauss was incredible moderating three strong Jewish men from our community, who shared their stories of success, some starting at the AJCC ECE,
Hebrew Academy, or Camp Kamaroff. Aaron Kern was the Chair for this year’s event. Men’s Philanthropy is a fellowship of dynamic Jewish men- brothers, fathers, sons and friends - who today inspire each other through Jewish values and commitment to community. Through business and social networking, leadership, philanthropy, and leveraging its collective power, Men’s Philanthropy provides our community with assistance when needed, and support for Jews here at home, Israel and around the world. Don Kaiser, Chair of Men’s Philanthropy, invites more men to join the cabinet and help plan future events. Call (562) 426-7601 ext. 1007.

Community: Choosing to Be A Part of the Whole By Rabbi Abba Perelmuter
In a world of increasing isolationism, it is even more important than ever to make the choice to Rabbi Abba be part of a Perelmuter c o m m u n i t y . You may have read that last sentence and said to yourself, “Wait... Make a choice?” Since when is being part of a community a choice? Let me assure you friends, it is very much a choice, and one of the most important choices you will ever make. The Jewish people, whether by forced circumstances or by choice, always lived together in close quarters. We all know the famous stories of the Shtetl and we can imagine what it was like to live among family and friends (and the gossipers!).
Southern California could not be further from a Shtetl, but we can try to recreate the caring, support, and love that the people shared in the Shtetl. Our world is so isolated here; we need more of the family atmosphere that existed in Jewish communities for millennia. I have been to too many funerals with too few people in attendance. In the Orthodox world, being in a community is so important that many people build their own communities by having very large families. My son-in-law’s parents just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, being surrounded by their 13 children, 50 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Talk about a support system! In the off-chance that you do not have 13 children, I would
suggest that you make yourself part of a tight-knit community. A group of people that will be there for you in good times and bad, people to share the holidays with, discuss your worries with, visit in the hospital, etc. Being part of the Kehillah (community) is not just for observant Jews. The word for community in Hebrew is Tzibur, which stands for Tzadikim (righteous people), Beinonim (regular people), and Reshaim (the unmentionable family members). All together these kinds of people make up the whole. Observant and nonobservant Jews are still part of the same family. Being part of a community goes both ways. Many people wait for their phone to ring. If no one is calling you, you pick up the phone. You make the
connection. It may mean doing something out of your comfort zone, but in the end, it is worth it. I remember a woman once complaining to me that no one in Shul had ever invited her for a Friday night dinner. When I asked her how many families she had over to her house, she was embarrassed to admit that she had never invited anyone either. Being part of the Kehillah means living a life for others, not just for yourself. We are responsible for one another. Being an active member of the Jewish community will lead you to a life full of meaning and blessings, and you may very well (finally) hear some gossip along the way! Rabbi Abba Perelmuter is the Rabbi of Shul By The Shore in Long Beach, CA.

NCJW Takes New Direction for 2017-18
National Council of Jewish Women Long Beach Section will begin its new year by “Building Bridges,” according to the recently elected president, Linda Calderon. “Our membership will take new directions and take on new challenges, as well as reaching out into the community even more than we have done before,” she said. At its retreat at the Alpert Jewish Community Center earlier this month, the organization’s Board
addressed four planning areas: Connections, Collaborations, Civic Engagement, and Communications, as they relate to NCJW’s mission, principles and resolutions. Calderon said the Board will incorporate these issues into their year with the goal of energizing and revitalizing NCJW Long Beach and bringing more options to participate to the Long Beach Jewish and general community and help bring about change. This year brought the organization
several awards for its volunteer efforts in several areas. Those attending the retreat were privileged to hear Rabbi Joel Simonds, rabbi at University Synagogue in Los Angeles, CA and an advocate of social justice for the Reform Movement, speak on the subject saying, “As Jews, we must be for all people.” His talk reinforced the NCJW theme for its new year, “Building Bridges.” NCJW welcomes all women (and men) who are interested in volunteering in its many areas of social justice, community service, and education. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact Linda Calderon at lindaneukirkcalderon@me.com. jewishlongbeach.org | JUNE 2017 |

Suicide and Teens: 13 Reasons Why By Kisa Grayson, MFTI, JFCS Clinician
Recently there has been considerable conversation in the media about “Thirteen Reasons Why”, a Netflix series that chronicles a young girl’s path to suicide and details the reasons she considered and ultimately followed through with death by suicide. Hannah, the main character, chronicles bullying at school, being dragged through the rumor-mill as “easy”, and being betrayed by friends. Hannah has both witnessed and experienced devastating trauma, including being raped, feeling responsible for the accidental death of a classmate, and disappointing her parents. While Hannah’s short existence is racked with tragedy, it is not unlike real life
for many young people, many of whom have experienced some form of serious emotional pain. For many who have considered suicide, death is not the primary goal of their thoughts. They simply want the pain to end. Unfortunately, it can be paralyzing when faced with a teen with suicidal ideation. Unsure of our ability to help, we tend to rely on others and remain silent. If you see or know a teen you suspect is suffering with depression or contemplating harming him/ herself, be aware of the signs, particularly in the context of experiences like Hannah’s Here are 13 signs to watch for: 1. A previous suicide attempt 2. Talk of killing oneself or
making a plan to do so 3. A strong wish to die or a preoccupation with death 4. Signs of depression (moodiness, hopelessness, withdrawal, irritability) 5. Poor school performance (a change from normal performance) 6. Alcohol or drug use (different and increased from before) 7. Saying good-bye as if never to see someone again 8. Giving away prized possessions 9. A recent death or suicide by family member or friend 10. A recent break-up
with boy/girlfriend, or conflict with parents 11. Having access to firearms or other means of harm 12. Lacking connection to others (having no one to talk to) 13. Impulsiveness and taking unnecessary risks Know your resources and what to do for your teens: Show You Care—Talk to your teen, ask questions and really listen to what they have to say. They want the pain to go away and believe that death is the only way out. Share your feelings with them and encourage them to share their feelings with you. Ask Plenty of Questions— Don’t worry that talking about
suicide will put the thought into your teen’s mind; it doesn’t work that way. If you’ve spotted the signs, they may already have thoughts and would benefit from an outlet for expressing them. Be brave and start the conversation. Getting Help is Okay— Seek professional services for your teen while you continue to support them. Message from the Executive Director
Before I get into all the great things going on this summer, I want to thank all of you who took the time to fill out our member survey. It means a lot to me and to our community that you want to partner with us in giving you the best possible member experience. With your candid feedback and suggestions, we are able to improve our programs and services, so again, a heartfelt Thank You! June is one of my favorite months at the J. There is always so much going on, and this year we have added even more programs and events as part of our fabulous Summer of Fun! Camp Komaroff kicks off on June 19 with that perfect combination of fun and learning that you’ve come to expect from the Alpert JCC. In addition to swimming, martial arts, and field trips, we have hand-on science projects, mixed-media art, space exploration, and so much more! If your kids (or grandkids!) haven’t signed up yet, please take a look at our brochure (in the Promenade or on the website) so they don’t miss out on all the great fun! We have two more very exciting events going on in June—both on June 25, so save the date! Our very first Summer Jewish Festival will include tastings of Jewish food, live music, Judaica vendors, arts & crafts for the kids, swimming, games, and we will feature the charming movie An American Tale. This event is FREE, and I really hope I see you there! It’s the perfect time to bring your friends, your kids, and your grandkids. And because we know this will be such a special event, we are also hosting an Open House for the community to see all of the wonderful things that we have to offer here at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. You know that it’s Your Center for Life, and we want to spread the word! The Open House will include the Jewish Festival, of course, as well as tours of our Fitness Center, Early Childhood Education (preschool), some group fitness classes, swimming, a youth fun zone, and a barbeque! Please encourage your friends, neighbors, book club, chavurah, etc. to come by and see what a special place we have here. We are an inclusive and diverse community, and I am so proud of everything we have to offer. I look forward to seeing you on June 25 and every day!
L’Shalom

Leah Bleidistel
Assistant Director for Curriculum and Programs Leah Bleidistel is one of our dedicated staff members who first started coming to the Alpert JCC when she was a child. She went to camp here and attended many activities (including Hebrew High) that took place in the building. She loved the J and knew that when her oldest son, Michael, got to preschool age (he is now 22), she wanted him to go to the J. It was pure fortune that she also eventually started working here. As Leah explains, “I came back to the Alpert JCC with Michael in 1998, so Michael started in the old building. At the time, I was going to school to get a degree in studio art. After Michael had attended the preschool for a couple of years, I spoke with the ECE director and started my career at the J as an assistant teacher in the preschool. That was very exciting because I was able to work while Michael was here. I have been so fortunate to be able to do that with each of my kids (Sydney is now 14 and Harlan is 6). It really has been amazing—just to be able to see them every day and know they are having the same wonderful experience I had here. Last year was Harlan’s final year in the preschool, so now he attends Kids’ University. My kids have practically been raised at the JCC! “I worked here as a teaching assistant for several years while I was in school, and then I left for a while to get my Master’s Degree in Education. Although my plan was to be an elementary school teacher in the Long Beach school district, the J just kept calling me back. After I got my Multiple Subject Credential, I substituted in the school district for a while, but I decided that I missed the J. I wanted to be working with the children in our preschool. I came back and taught in the ECE for several years, teaching all of the different age groups as well as being a regular substitute for both our reading and movement programs. “One of the reasons I came back to the J was that I had learned a lot about Early Childhood Education, how the brain develops, and how children learn the best. It was vastly different from what I was seeing in the public schools. The play-based education that we emphasize here— where we help children construct their own knowledge through exploration and experimentation—is very important to me. It is imperative that children be involved in their own process of learning. It empowers them and lays the foundation for a positive educational journey. Children learn best from real life; it’s how we all learn most effectively. We can’t just be told something, we have to experience it. That’s why I connect so well with our early childhood philosophy. “Also, I just love working with the kids and their families. It’s so much fun. I love getting to know the children and seeing them grow. They start when they are two and we get to watch them develop like our own children. I get invested in them and their families, and it’s exciting to watch the process of them growing and learning. I really love working in the ECE with our amazing staff. We have a great team that supports each other, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it. “Last July, I went from working full time as a teacher to being offered my current position as Assistant Director of Curriculum and Programs. I had met with Jeffrey Rips, our Executive Director, about ways I could get really involved in the administrative side and how the school is run, and so I was very excited for this opportunity to step up and help make our amazing school even better. “I’ve felt this incredible connection to the J since I was young. It just feels like home and that I’m part of a community, a family. It means a lot that my children still come here and also have that connection. My oldest still visits and loves it when he sees some of his teachers who still work here. My two youngest will both be in Camp Komaroff this summer. It’s not just me, it’s my whole family. We all love it here, and it feels very natural that this is where I work, where I belong.” - Interview by Erika Hillinger

The goal of the program is to get kids ready for a swim team, Junior Lifeguard programs, and/or water polo. Free Style, back stroke, butterfly and breast stroke are all taught and refined. Flip turns are introduced as well as dives and streamlined push-offs from the wall. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards freestyle with side breathing $45/MVP; $60/Public (per month).
ECE Mom and AJCC Board Member Melissa Newman is one of the ubiquitous parents who gives so much of her time and energy to making the Alpert JCC such a special place. She currently chairs the ECE Committee, is on the AJCC Board of Directors, and recently Co-Chaired the successful AJCC fundraiser, “Adults at Play.” When asked how she learned about the Alpert JCC, Melissa explained, “We learned about the JCC from Vicki Scherwin. Vicki and her husband have known my husband, Scott, for years, and our oldest kids are two days apart and have been the best of friends since birth. Vicki told me about From the Beginning, the free class for babies and their parents, and we attended several times together. It was the first time I had ever been to any JCC. I remember being so overwhelmed as a new mom and didn’t realize that nestled in the back of this wonderful building was the best preschool in Long Beach with the best teachers around! Our kids are now getting ready for Pre-K Celebration and will be off to kindergarten in the fall as we prepare for our little ones to start the program all over again. We are so thankful to be here at the J–joining the ECE was one of the best decisions we have made as parents.”

She continued, “I fell in love with the teachers who take such great care of all our children. That is what keeps me here, year after year. It is so important to know that my children are so well looked after and keeping their minds learning throughout the day. I never worry when I leave here.” Close friend, neighbor and PSA Chair, Karen Ben-Shmuel, quickly introduced Melissa to the various volunteer opportunities. “I am grateful to be so involved in the different activities. I have met so many inspiring parents through PSA events.” Melissa is quite active at the AJCC while also being a full-time working mom. She said, “It keeps me very busy, but it’s completely worth it—it’s been a really great way to meet other members and make life-long friends. Our preschool is unique as you really feel the sense of community when you walk through the doors, whether it’s joining in the singing for Shabbat or watching the Havdalah program or just saying hi after drop off.” Melissa really enjoys being part of the ECE committee and working so closely with Alayna Cosores, ECE Director and her fantastic team. Her involvement with the fundraisers, the ECE Committee, and working with board members and Jeffrey Rips has been a very rewarding experience.

Melissa works for a luxury fitness retreat in Malibu where she’s Director of Guest Relations and Reservations and works from her home office. “I realize how fortunate I am that I am able to drop my kids off in the morning and be able to pop into Shabbat music or Havdalah once in a while due to my flexible schedule.” Evan is excited to start Gan Hamaish (the Pre-K camp program) this summer, and her youngest, Mila, will be starting Moving On. “I am excited that she will get to have the same wonderful experiences that Evan did at the J. We are excited about our future here and the life-long memories we continue to make!”

Hebrew Academy Early Childhood Receives Two Top Awards
The Hebrew Academy is proud to announce that the Karp Early Childhood Center has received the Orange County Association for the Education of Young Children Quality in ECE Outstanding Center Award. The Orange County Association for the Education of Young Children is the local affiliate of the National Association of the Education of Young Children, the largest and most prestigious early childhood organization in the country. Its mission is to support early childhood professionals in their work with children, birth through age eight, to advocate for high standards, improved working conditions in programs for young children, and to promote public understanding of issues affecting children and their families. Two Preschool teachers were awarded grants for their absolute excellence and professionalism. Lisa Haley of the Nursery class and Raizel Weinbaum of the Pre-K class each received recognitions and will be awarded their grants at a ceremony in June.
The Hebrew Academy’s Preschool Director, Chanie Perelmuter, said, “We are thrilled to accept these awards. We know we have a highly successful, and outstanding comprehensive student-centric program, but it’s always nice to be acknowledged by the educational establishment.” The Preschool is rated #1 in our area, having been recognized as a 5 star rating on the Quality Star Orange County Department of Education rating system. Chanie is proud to have been part of the Quality Rating & Improvement System (QRIS) program since its inception. T h ro u g h re c e i v i n g professional development workshops and attending education conferences, the teachers of The Hebrew Academy are always constantly improving their skills to be the best educator possible for our children. To learn more information about the top rated early childhood program and the only Jewish Infant Center in town, please contact Chanie Perelmuter at (714) 898-0051 ext. 204 and come for a tour.
The Jewish Community Celebrated Israel at The Hebrew Academy
More than 750 Jews from across Orange and Los Angeles County came to The Hebrew Academy of Orange County (located at the Alevy Campus in Huntington Beach, CA) to celebrate the annual Israel Day and Lag B’Omer holiday on Sunday, May 14th, 2017. The event hosted live entertainment direct from Israel, including the popular singer Chen Aharoni and the famous kids artist/super star Naama. There were dozens of interactive activities for adults and children alike. Local vendors and booths featuring local non-profits lined the rows. One example is Families of Lone Soldiers, an incredible organization who supports families who send their kids to serve in the IDF. Also available were bounce houses sponsored by Camp Silver Gan Israel, folk dancing and Zumba, kosher Israeli food and much more. This special event was the result of months of preparation and countless hours of careful planning by the OC Israeli and The Hebrew Academy team, led by Nelli Greenspan (Director of Admissions),
Rabbi Newman (Head of School) and Roei Leon (Security Director). Nelli commented, “This is not just an ordinary event, this event has a more personal meaning. Israel is important to us and we need to show the strength and unity of Israelis and the American Jews.” This event provided an authentic Israeli experience
for people who grew up in the United States and have never been to Israel. This was a chance to connect to the Israeli Community and learn more about its culture, uniqueness of its people, and the global importance of Israel. The event concluded with marching at the Unity Parade where the children advanced forward while singing “Am Yisrael Chai.” The Lag B’Omer March, led by Rabbi Engel, provided participants a goody bag and a raffle ticket to win a hoverboard, while sharing information about the Lag B’Omer tradition. Due to the tremendous success of this year’s event, the planning groups are already arranging for a grand celebration for next year’s festivities, with an even more grandiose format.
