FEATURE STORY
It’s Almost Here! Have You Gotten Involved, Yet? By Susan Paletz, Director of Program Development & Community Development, Alpert JCC
We are less than 3 months away from the JCC Maccabi ArtsFest ® coming to our community and we can’t wait. Hundreds of people will be part of this movement that will bring our community even closer to share this inter-generational experience of a lifetime. We can’t say it enough! There are 4 ways to get involved! Jewish Teens between the ages of 12-17 can participate in the JCC Maccabi ArtsFest ®. ArtsFest is a non-competitive, workshop-style arts program tailored to passionate, creative Jewish teens, looking to expand their skills. This summer, we are offering eight different specialties in which each teen can choose to participate for
the entire week. It’s a great opportunity for teens to experience the largest Jewish teen event of the summer right in our own back yard and be part of the host city’s delegation! Anyone over the age of 18 can be a volunteer. Hosting over 150 teens from around the world that are coming to participate in the 2018 JCC Maccabi ArtsFest® is a big undertaking, so we ask for the Greater Long Beach and West Orange County community to come together to help build an experience for years to come! We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and many different time shifts. There’s something for everyone! Jewish families in the near by cities are being
called out to be Host Families. Every teen that comes to Long Beach to participate in ArtsFest needs a home to stay! Please aid the Alpert Jewish Community Center (Alpert JCC) in finding welcoming Jewish homes to host these amazing teens for a week. Can’t volunteer or be a host family but still want to support the Alpert JCC in strengthening the creative exploration of Jewish teens? Please donate! With your generosity, we can continue to ensure the rich traditions, success, and excitement of this prestigious event. For more information regarding the ArtsFest, or how to get involved, please visit our website alpertjcc.org/artsfest

With a theme of “Engagement”, Leslie and her Cabinet have succeeded in establishing new connections between Women’s Philanthropy and previously uninvolved women in our community. She has inspired our women to: 1) work with local Jewish agencies for social service and tikkun olam, 2) support our local Hillel, 3) become committed donors to the Federation, 4) create new community support programs such as Shabbat Meals on Wheels, and Cut for a Cause 5) recognize women leaders at our annual Arlene Solomon VISIONS dinner, and 6) engage young women as philanthropic leaders. This year, Leslie was honored as the Federation’s “Woman of Vision” at our annual Arlene Solomon Visions dinner for her many contributions. *of blessed memory

When I began this journey, no one ever said it would be easy. But it is getting easier and the adventure is filled with surprises. By happy accident – and I am often told that there are no accidents – I discovered that my livestreamed Facebook Shabbat services, broadcasted from my home, are viewed by people from all over the world; my live stream congregation has grown to around 130; on Yom HaShoah I had over

American Jewry is facing a falling-away from the many brick-and-mortar synagogues. I hope with all my heart that the pendulum swings back one day; but there are places in our shrinking world that are seeking spirituality any way possible; and if Jews in places like Uganda, Pakistan, Brazil and India can find me on their electronic devices, I will continue to bring the beauty of our religion to them any way I can. My Special Trip to Israel
By Dana Schneider Chanzit, AJCC Camp Director I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Israel on a training seminar at the end of April. While there, I was able to meet our two amazing Shlichot (Israeli specialists) who will be joining our community this summer. I was also able to drop off all the notes from the AJCC into the Kotel (the Western Wall) with the help of some friends. We visited the Kotel at night and it was very peaceful. It was a special experience being there at night and delivering all of your notes into the sacred place.

JFCS Announces 3 New Programs for Parents Coming This Summer As the school year comes to a close and the daily routine changes to adapt to summer schedules, it’s perhaps the perfect time to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that parenting presents, and to seek new insights into how to effectively perform in our most important job. JFCS is offering three new programs that can help moms and dads as they navigate this role. Active Parenting Programs Active Parenting is an 8-week program that gives parents skills to achieve a more satisfying family life as it helps parents help their children ages 5-12 achieve greater success and happiness. This program uses
video and discussion to show parents how to effectively communicate with their kids, teach important character traits such as responsibility, and how to minimize power struggles with their children. The program is taught by Jeff McFarland, Associate Marriage & Family Therapist of the JFCS clinical team. Register online at jfcslongbeach.org/parentingprograms. Two New Support Groups for Parents Are Forming: A Parenting Support Group meets on Mondays from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 p.m., allowing parents to attend on their lunch break or prior to picking up children from

half-day summer activities. It is designed to provide a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere where parents can express their feelings around the joys and challenges of their role. The group meets in the JFCS Office Conference Room and is facilitated by a JFCS clinician. Parents of Children with Special Needs need a group tailor made for them and will benefit from this support group where all participants share similar experiences and challenges. The group setting, led by a JFCS clinician, is a safe place for parents to discuss their struggles and victories, gain valuable feedback, and learn about valuable resources from each

Annual Golf Tournament Raises Funds
Marrying fun and comradery to a sense of meaningfulness are memorable facets of the Hebrew Academy OC’s annual golf tournament. This year’s golf tournament was no different, with attendees having a great time playing and raising
money to support the school. Taking place at Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach, this year’s annual golf tournament occurred on Monday, May 14th, with proceeds coming from corporate sponsorships going to benefit Hebrew Academy OC’s Scholarship Fund and
After-School Program. Joseph Konowiecki, the event’s chairman, made sure that the teams had a great time, starting with a deluxe breakfast, receiving golf clubs, and the dot for each participant. Throughout 18 holes, there were surprises for all teams such as cigars, alcohol, and giveaways, such as golf balls, Adidas bags, and golf clothes. In addition to the exclusive gifts and delicious food after the game, participants also came away with a positive sense of partnering with Hebrew Academy OC and the mission of the school. Those participating will leave with a wonderful memento of giving to the community and making Jewish education affordable to families.
Bridges, Rockets, and More at Our Open House
Who knew water was so powerful? With great force, rockets designed by middle schoolers at Hebrew Academy OC shot up dozens, if not hundreds of feet up into the air at the school’s recent open house. With more than 200 parents and family members watching, the rocketlaunching by different groups of middle schoolers provided an exhilarating showcase of
some of their project-based learning. As part of this projectbased learning, the middle schoolers learned about outer space, rocket-launching, physics, and math. Following the excitement of the rockets being launched high up in the air, parents walked with their kids to their classrooms, where they experienced and witnessed their own child’s accomplishments. The parents also had the opportunity to have a countdown of 10 amazing accomplishments and new things in the school, such as the STEM program, where the parents could hear firsthand from our students about their child’s Solar Rover or even a new design bridge. Parents were interested to hear about the Enhanced and Accelerated Learning Opportunities (the accelerated program for gifted students) and the individual learning program, iReady, which began this year.
Preschoolers Pamper Mothers
Treating their mothers to a lovely spa day, the Hebrew Academy Preschoolers recently pampered their mothers in honor of Mother’s
Day. Along with a manicure, the preschoolers baked delicious challah alongside their mothers, as well as showing cards and gifts for
their mothers. The Preschool celebrated this past Mother’s Day as part of honoring mothers and the influence of mothers in our
society. This event provided the opportunity for mothers to meet other moms and to enlarge their friends circle. Showing gratitude is one of
the school’s main core values and the school wanted to make sure that even young children know how to do so, especially in a fun way.

Upcoming Classes with Rabbi David Cantor
Creating Caring Community - Four Lessons in Communal Kindness In Hebrew, a synagogue is called a a holy community. For guidance as to what that means, we can look to the Talmud (Sotah 14a):
Rabbi Hama said in the name of Rabbi Hanina: “Follow Adonai your God” (Dueteronomy 13:5) What Does this mean? Is it possible for a mortal to follow God’s presence? The verse means to teach us that we should follow the attributes of the Holy One. As God clothes the naked, you should clothe the naked. The Bible teaches that the Holy One visited the sick; you should also visit the sick. The Holy One comforted those who mourned; you should comfort those who mourn. The Holy One buried the dead; you should bury the dead. This Summer, Rabbi David Cantor would like to offer four opportunities to learn to be like the Holy One of Israel, who visits the sick, comfronts the bereaved, and buries the dead:
Give Me Your Hand: Guidance on Visiting the Sick on Thursday, June 21 @ 7:00pm We will explore the Jewish practice of Bikkur Cholim, visiting the sick. Our goal will be to provide clear, concise, and easily accessible information about traditional practices, describing the historical and theological context for this practice and including traditional prayers, new prayers, and a checklist of practical advice.
Nihum Aveilim: A Guide for the Comforter on Thursday, June 28 @ 7:00pm Too often, those who attend Jewish funerals, both as mourners and comforters, are not fully familiar with our traditions, practices, and prayers. We will seek to explore what we can do to be of comfort, seeking guidance & insight, greater understanding, familiarity and awareness, through the explanations of burial, funeral, and shiva rituals, as well as Hebrew prayers and texts, with translations and transliterations.
