Jewish Camp Does Make a Difference By Danny Levy, Director of Development
Jewish Camp alumni are 50 percent more likely to join a synagogue, 90 percent more likely to join a Jewish community center, and twice as likely to donate $100 or more to their local federation than Jewish adults who never went to a Jewish camp.

amp – the name alone conjures up images of sleeping bags, camp fires, songs, water fun and new friends. It is a transformative experience in the life of a child. From traditional sleep-away camps to specialty camps, there is one right for your family. Jewish Camps Teach Jewish Values Jewish camp weaves Jewish values, culture, and traditions into the fabric of camp, helping campers to connect to their own identity and the larger Jewish community. Spirited and dynamic staff members use experiential learning to reveal what makes Jewish religion and culture so unique in today’s world. At camp, Jewish and Israeli culture are celebrated through song, food, art, and dance. Jewish camps provide countless opportunities to teach and model Jewish behaviors and actions. Judaism is infused into all of the activities from services, to horseback riding, and from swimming to song sessions. Jewish camps provide opportunities in an educational setting to complement Jewish supplementary schools, religious schools, and day schools. Each camp designs its own program to be accessible and enjoyable for all campers. Whether they’re telling stories in their bunks, learning about the environment, going on an excursion or playing Ga Ga, campers explore what Judaism means to them in a safe, nurturing, and fun environment. Campers Become Jewish Adults The impact of Jewish camp is immediate— campers return home connected to a community and friends that will last them a lifetime. And it’s only the beginning. The effects of those summers last long after August goodbyes. Children with pivotal Jewish camp experiences are more likely to become adults who value their Jewish heritage, support Jewish causes, and take on leadership roles in their communities.
Variety of Camping Options Jewish summer camps also provide extensive activities for their campers. Swimming, performing arts, sports, visual arts, music, water sports, and the list goes on. Each camp is different and finding the right one takes time and research. There are many resources to help you and your child find the right camp, your synagogue, the JCC, the Foundation for Jewish Camping, friends, and neighbors. You may also refer to the list of nearby camps at the end of this article. According to a survey of California Campers and their parents, most children who attended a Jewish overnight camp last summer also spent some time, the same summer, in a Jewish day camp. In addition, many overnight campers spent time at a “specialty camp” for sports, arts, or drama. There are many different options when deciding the best camping experience.
will get to select a chug (specialty class) of their choice. These chugim are tailored to the age/ ability of your child to help your child delve deeper into the specialties they love, as well as explore new interests. These chugim include a variety of art classes, sports, sciences, theater, improve, and cooking, In addition to the chugim, campers also participate in weekly field trips, two late nights or overnights during the summer (depending on age), and weekly Oneg Shabbat celebrations. Camp Komaroff strongly believes that Jewish day camp is vital to the development of our youth. For this reason, they give out over $19,000 in scholarships for elementary to high school aged children every summer so that all kids can attend camp, regardless of their financial situation. Last summer, they were able to provide scholarships to 42 children to attend camp.

PJ Goes To Camp
PJ Library Goes to Camp PJ Goes to Camp is designed to serve as an extention of the The PJ Library experience, inviting PJ Library families to consider Jewish camp. It is one of over two dozen funders of the national One Happy Camper program. These national funders coordinate first time campership grants to maximize the number of children across North America who receive a grant. These campers, or their siblings, must be or have been a recipient of PJ Library books. Summer Camps in the Area Camp Komaroff, located at the Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC) on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, is open to the entire community and welcomes a diverse population into the AJCC every summer. Camp Komaroff provides programming, guided by Jewish values, which help youth cultivate friendships, develop a sense of their place in the world, and forge connections to their peer group, family, and to the Jewish community. Each week at Camp Komaroff, your camper

Exceptional Jewish women from across the community come together to enjoy each other’s company, experience an exciting program, and honor Women of Vision from local Jewish organizations to raise funds in support of all the programs and services of the Jewish Community Partnership. On Thursday, March 31 at 5:30p.m. at the Alpert JCC on the Jewish Federation Weinberg Campus, the Arlene Solomon VISIONS Dinner is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Be Inspired and Entertained by Singer Andra London Andra London is well known for her 12-year run as a member of the Jewish pop trio Visions. Affectionately nicknamed the “Jewish Destiny’s Child,” they recorded 4 albums and performed in over 150 concerts in 80 cities nationwide. Andra continues to bring her passion to the stage through ‘My Jewish Story through Song,’ an uplifting program filled with traditional and contemporary Hebrew and English songs. In her program, Andra shares stories of her experiences from childhood to young adulthood, paying tribute to the Jewish organizations that influenced her along the way. Andra’s passion for her heritage combined with her stage presence and incredible vocal talent makes for a night to remember. Since her first stage show at age seven,
Andra’s performing career has included two of her favorite roles as Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof and Anne in The Diary of Anne Frank as well as Disney World performances. Women of Vision Honorees At the Arlene Solomon VISIONS Dinner, we come together to celebrate the power we have as women to care for the vulnerable, to be committed to the survival of the Jewish people, to invest in the future of our children and to rescue those in need no matter where they live. “It’s been a true honor being a CoChair of the Arlene Solomon VISIONS Dinner Committee for a second consecutive year. Are You a Secret Member of the Legacy Society? By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development
Thank you, thank you, thank you….We can never say “Thank You” enough to all of our community members who make Jewish life possible through their continued support of our Jewish agencies, schools and synagogues. However, we need to ask you an important question. Are you a Secret Member of the Legacy Society? Have you protected your lifelong investment in our Jewish community by including a gift to the Jewish community in your will or trust? If you have, then you are already a member of the Legacy Society. If you have not, then we invite you to make a promise today to make a difference tomorrow. We are asking you to consider including a gift in your will or trust to the Jewish community through the Jewish Community Foundation. As those before us already have, it is up to us now to ensure that in the future we will be able to provide Jewish arts, culture and education programs that stimulate, enrich and connect all ages; comprehensive teen, young

adult and family engagement programs that inspire and groom the next generation to assume leadership and connect to our worldwide Jewish community; expanded services to our seniors so no elderly person is left alone, hungry or without care; counseling and support for families who are at risk and much more. By signing a Letter of Intent to leave a bequest, of any size, you will automatically become a Legacy Society Member. Your intent to leave
a deferred gift will also count towards our community’s goal of raising $15 million in future endowments through the Fund for our Future, which will help preserve Jewish life while meeting future community needs over many decades. Legacy Society members will be recognized at the Foundation’s Legacy Society Brunch on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 11:00am at the Weinberg Federation Campus. The Brunch is hosted by the Jewish Community
Foundation and planned by the Foundation’s Legacy Committee. Legacy chair Jan Stein states, “The Legacy Society event is just one way we express our deep gratitude to this visionary group of community members who share common values and an unwavering commitment that ensures our Jewish community will thrive for generations to come.” Making a Legacy Gift is Easy Every family and financial
situation is unique and bequests of all amounts are needed. To become a member of the Legacy Society, you do not need to divulge the amount of your gift, you simply need to let us know that you intend to leave something in your will or trust. A bequest left through the Jewish Community Foundation can benefit all the charities you care about, both Jewish and secular. There are many ways to leave a bequest and some options include a simple bequest in a will or trust; a named endowment or special purpose fund through an outright gift using appreciated assets or cash; distributions from an IRA or pension plan; designation of a life insurance policy; a charitable gift annuity and more. The Jewish Community Foundation is ready to assist you in starting the conversation to find the right philanthropic path for you and your family. Consul General Reminds Us of Israel’s Importance By Rabbi Howard Laibson
On February 10th, more than three-hundred people came together in the Amy & Richard Lipeles Family Rabbi Howard Auditorium Laibson of the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus to hear David Siegel, Israel’s Consul General for the Pacific Southwest, speak about contemporary issues that the Jewish State faces. The evening, coordinated by the Israel Advocacy Committee of the Jewish Federation, very ably chaired by Linda Simmons, and by the Kehillah Leadership Council, was both informative and energizing. Very briefly, the Consul General addressed matters pertaining to the hope in Israel to revive the peace process, Israel’s leadership in water technologies and other arenas, and the tremendous changes
occurring in the Middle East that effect that region, Europe and the rest of the world. While this reflection can not include all the information imparted to the audience that evening, I wanted to discuss here the manner in which Mr. Siegel’s presentation was so energizing. First, of course, is the very personal way in which the Consul General spoke about Israel. Born in the state of Vermont into a committed Jewish family where his father was the Conservative Rabbi, David Siegel made aliyah with his family. I’ve heard him speak several times. He doesn’t talk about Israel in a detached, diplomatic way (though he is completely professional). He speaks of his home, where his children are growing up, where he hopes that Israelis and Palestinians can one day soon live in peace and cooperation. As he spoke that evening, we were drawn into his world view. The Israel about which
he spoke became a living, breathing entity, a real place where real people struggle to live a life of integrity and meaning; a nation where all citizens (Arab Christians and Muslims, Druze, Jews and still others) are free and largely equal politically and economically. Here we have the second reason I found Mr. Siegel’s talk energizing. I refer to Israel’s politico-social experience as “largely equal” because, as Mr. Siegel himself indicated, Israel is not merely an idealized concept. It is a flesh-and-blood country, where the evolution of the democratic process is ongoing. Are there problems of economic inequality in Israel? Of course, just as is true in every other democracy throughout the world. And in Israel, the people recognize this and are addressing it. Well over a billion dollars has just been assigned by the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament) to strengthen education, housing and infrastructure in the Arab sectors
of the country. The process of economic parity will take time, but it is being thoughtfully carried out. And thirdly, we were energized by Israel’s innovative spirit. Second only to America, Israeli thought leaders are being sought out by representatives of numerous nations in the areas of business, computer technology, aerospace, medicine, water desalination, and so many other fields. Just hearing about the new technological and scientific developments being pioneered in Israel was inspiring! And, I want to add, it made us proud. I am also hoping to travel to Israel in the near future. I encourage you to put Israel on your travel itinerary soon, as well. L’shalom, Rabbi Laibson Rabbi Howard O. Laibson is the Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Shir Chadash in Lakewood, CA. He also serves as the Chair of the Federation Kehillah Council.

JEWISH LIFE & CULTURE
Message from the Executive Director
March is here, and once again we move from winter into spring with a lot of fun and exciting events! There’s a lecture series on The Jewish Experience in America, a Rosh Chodesh Celebration with author Racheli Morris, the AJCC Gala, our new Israel for Reel movie nights, and of course, the annual Purim Carnival! On March 12 at 7pm, we will be honoring three outstanding members of our community who have given from their hearts for many years: Edie Brodsky, Jessie Butler, and Lynne Kass. Please come and enjoy a wonderful evening while supporting our ECE and Youth programs at this year’s AJCC Gala: Venetian Nights. The evening will feature a silent auction, a delicious sit-down dinner, and the opportunity to publicly thank our honorees who have done so much for the Alpert JCC and the Jewish Community. Please contact Susan Paletz at (562) 426-7601, ext 1012 or go to the JCC website for more information. In the Book of Esther, we read that Purim (the evening of March 24 this year) is a time for “feasting and merrymaking,” as well as for “sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor” (Esther 9:22). On March 20 from 11:30am-3pm, the AJCC again will be hosting the ever-popular, endlessly fun for kids of all ages, Community Purim Carnival! As part of the carnival-like atmosphere of Purim, I encourage you all to dress up and participate in our costume contest! This tradition of wearing costumes is said to come from when Esther “masked” her Jewish identity. There will be carnival rides and games, a Ferris wheel, racers, pony rides (with real ponies!), a petting zoo, mitzvah projects, and Kosher food and Hamantaschen for sale. May your Purim be full of fun, frolic, gift-giving and Hamantaschen. Please check our website for the dates of all the activities going on this month, and I look forward to seeing all of you here at the AJCC, Your Center For Life.

Alayna Cosores Announced as New ECE Director
We are proud to announce that, after an extensive search from all over the country, Alayna Cosores has been named the Alpert JCC’s new ECE Director! Alayna grew up at the JCC, where she began attending the preschool when she was three. Alayna enjoyed her summers attending our summer camp programs and summer stock. In 1996, she joined the ECE staff with her first JCC job working as a Teachers’ Assistant in the afternoon preschool. She then became a Teacher when we moved to the new building in 1999. She received her BA in Child Development from CSULB in 2003. Alayna also has her AA in Culinary Arts and loves to cook. Alayna was an ECE teacher for 5 years, teaching every age group. She was hired as the Assistant Director 12 years ago and then was named Interim Director last spring. She was announced as Director last week. Alayna says, “I love being part of the community and seeing the ECE change with the times, and I love being a part of the change while helping us progress in new directions. The staff is amazing. I love their diversity and their willingness to adopt new programs. They always want to do what’s best for the children and best for the community. Their willingness to participate has been great and is often inspiring. They stick by each other and by the parents, coming together in times of need for those who are going through crisis. They are very supportive of the ECE and the larger community, and I love being part of that.” Alayna also really appreciates how supportive [executive director] Jeffrey Rips has been during her transition to Director. “It has been a pleasure working with Jeffrey. He has always encouraged and supported me to reach past my personal goals for something greater. I’m part of the SHEVA-Covenant Director’s Institute, a three-year program sponsored by the Covenant Foundation in partnership with the JCC Association, which serves to connect emerging learners and leaders in Jewish Early Childhood Education. I was very excited when Jeffrey chose me to represent our JCC. Twenty-one of us from North America were chosen and they are training us to become the next generation of preschool directors. We meet every 6 months or so (I was at a conference in February) and participate in on-line professional development. They are teaching us how to bring more Judaism into the preschools and teaching us how to be not only amazing preschool directors, but amazing preschool directors at a JCC.” In Alayna’s case, this has already become a reality! Alayna and her partner, David, have three children, ages 21, 9, and 5. Her five-year-old will be graduating from the ECE program in August this year, and she looks forward to her younger children being in summer camp together this summer. She loves that they can share the AJCC together. Alayna loves crafting, cooking, and spending time with her family. And she makes amazing costumes for the ECE staff dress up days! Congratulations, Alayna!

Alex’s Lemonade Stand March 14-18
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. Join us the week of March 14-18 (and at the Purim Carnival) as the children of the ECE raise money at our lemonade stand for ALSF.

How Will You Move for Mental Health Awareness? May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is no coincidence that Race With A View will be held on Sunday, May 1st, 2016. “We can think of no better way to kick off our publicity campaign to emphasize the importance of access to affordable mental health services for everyone than to gather in a beautiful location for a walk with family and friends,” said Dr. Mark Dressner, Race Committee Chair for 2016.
There are many ways to show your support for mental health awareness. Here are just a few: 1. Plan to participate in Race With A View. Make it a party by creating a team of your family, your work colleagues, and your friends. Create a team T-shirt that all will wear on May 1, and make a lot of noise when your team is recognized at the starting line. It is very easy to register online and then set up your team right on the website
at..www.racewithaview.com. 2. Volunteer and be a part of making it happen for the walkers and runners. There are many opportunities, and you will receive a colorful Race With A View t-shirt to wear at the event. Go to the website at www.racewithaview.com and peruse the possibilities, then sign up. If you prefer, call Pattie Davidson at (562) 4277916 ext. 235 and she can assist you in finding the perfect role for you. 3. Become a fundraiser
for JFCS and the role the agency plays in providing professional, affordable counseling and support for all, regardless of religion, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability, or sexual orientation. The Race With A View website has all the tools you need to send e-mails to your friends and family asking for them to support your participation with a pledge to JFCS. 4. Prefer to sleep in on Sunday mornings? You can
still help JFCS by donating to Race With A View. Every dollar given will enable JFCS to continue its mission of empowering people to make positive changes through professional, affordable counseling and support services. You can donate at www.racewithaview.com or at www.jfcslongbeach.org, or you can contact the agency and make a donation over the phone. For more information, call JFCS at (562) 427-7916.

Baking with Beach Hillel
Challah baking on Thursday nights and kosher cooking classes are only two of the new cooking opportunities that Beach Hillel provides our students. Food and Judaism go hand in handmany of our students grew up eating chicken noodle soup, challah, schnitzel, and more traditional Jewish food, so we wanted to give them a taste of home and provide them with opportunities to learn and make their childhood favorites themselves! We hosted a hands-on kosher cooking class so students could learn
about the laws of kashrut, why it is important, and get recipes too! In addition, we have also hosted multiple challah bakes where students knead, braid, and decorate their own challahs. Sophomore Lea Mano attended our most recent challah bake and said “it was a fun opportunity to participate in the making of challah. Braiding a challah for Shabbat is a mitzvah for women and it’s also a fun way to connect to my Jewish heritage. It was nice seeing all my friends enjoy the challah I made at Shabbat dinner”.
Save A Child’s Heart Throughout the entire month of February, Beach Hillel students participated in a fundraising campaign for Save a Child’s Heart. Save a Child’s Heart is a non-profit organization based in Israel that provides urgently needed pediatric heart surgery and follow-up care for indigent children from developing countries around the world. Their mission is to improve the quality of pediatric cardiac care and provide services for children from countries where quality care would otherwise be unobtainable. February is the month of love, hearts, and spending time with those you care most about. We took this Valentine’s theme and connected it to tikkun olam and Israel. Our students spent the month tabling on campus at CSULB to collect donations for Save a Child’s Heart from students passing by. Sophomore Jacob Palsma said that he was “glad to have taken a part in this philanthropic opportunity and work for a common good that benefits so many people. The work that is being done in Israel is servicing children from all different ethnicities and backgrounds from all around the world. Being involved with Beach Hillel provided me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger

which was really impactful”. Beach Hillel students like Jacob felt so inspired to be a part of the fundraising for this Israeli-based international humanitarian project, and felt proud knowing they were helping to provide the funding for life-saving heart surgery and follow up care for children in developing
countries. Save a Child’s Heart has treated over 3,000 children from over 48 different countries and Beach Hillel students were able to play their part! You can find out more information about Save a Child’s Heart on their website: www. saveachildsheart.com
