FEATURE STORY

Got Purim? By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development

SATURDAY, MARCH 4 10:30 AM: Temple Beth David Purim Tot Shabbat Last year’s Purim Costume Parade.

Jewish communities around the world celebrate Purim as a holiday of feasting and gladness, giftgiving and tzedakah (charity), revelry, parties and masquerades. In our community, all of our agencies and synagogues gather together for a Community Purim Carnival. Community Celebration This year’s Community Purim CelebrationGot Purim?- will be held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center (Alpert JCC) on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus on Sunday, March 12th, 2017 from noon to 3:00 p.m. Join with the Alpert Jewish Community Center, Jewish Federation, and local synagogues and agencies as we all come together to celebrate Purim. Please see the Around the J section in this issue for a complete list of sponsoring organizations. In addition, please see the sidebar on this page for a list of Purim activities in the community, as well as see the Synagogue Directory on page 6 for contact information to find out specifically about events at each synagogue. Highlights include: a performance from the band Mostly Kosher; costume contest with prizes; Megillah reading; carnival rides; Kosher food and hamantaschen for sale; PJ Library activities; vendors, and much more. The carnival is open to the community, so please bring your neighbors, family and friends. Most importantly, volunteers are needed to help with all the activities. If you would like to volunteer, email Gayle Ehrenberg at gehrenberg@alpertjcc.org and let her know the time(s) you are available. The Whole Megillah The main observance connected to Purim is the Book of Esther reading, called the Megillah (the scroll). The Megillah is in the form of a parchment scroll, handwritten like a Torah, and is read twice, once at the evening (Ma’ariv) service and once during (Shaharit) the morning service. It tells the story of the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian empire where a plot had been formed by Haman – the royal advisor to King Ahasuerus – to kill all of the Jews. Haman’s plans were foiled by Mordecai 2 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |

and his adopted daughter Esther, who had risen to become Queen of Persia. This day of deliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing. Purim Around the World Since Haman met his fate on a tree in ancient Persia, Jews have celebrated Purim with an infectious enthusiasm. In different parts of the world, Jews historically have created their own customs to commemorate the deliverance of the Jewish people from their destruction. If you google “Purim Around the World,” you will find several websites (www. jafi.org and www.virtualjerusalem.com) that recount Purim traditions from communities where Jews have flourished in different time periods. Purim is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Israel, with joyous Purim street parties and a colorful carnival atmosphere everywhere. Everyone shares in the joy of the holiday and there is an emphasis on the community and gift giving, not only to your friends and family but to the needy as well. Mitzvot In addition, Jewish Federation Women’s and Men’s Philanthropy often partner with Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) to do mitzvot in the community by helping them with the Adopt-a Family program and serving meals to needy seniors. There are many ways to get involved with helping others in our community and we encourage you to contact each of the agencies and synagogues in our community for opportunities to help. A few examples include: the Friendly Visitor program at JFCS which provides company for individuals who are in need of social opportunities (for more information, email jfcs@jfcslongbeach.org); the Alpert JCC Holiday Outreach program which delivers holiday parcels to homebound seniors, (please contact Susan Mathieu at smathieu@alpertjcc.org for more information); and Temple Israel is doing a Make a Difference Day on Sunday, March 26th, 2017 with over 20 different volunteer projects. All of these projects are listed on their website at www.tilb.org. So during this Purim holiday, come together with members of our community in charity, feasting and gladness. May your Purim be merry, and may it be enriched with the joy of giving and sharing!

Women & Men’s Philanthropy: Myths and Facts Some may ask... What is Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign? The Jewish Federation exists to protect and enhance the well-being of people both locally and worldwide through caring for Jews in need (chesed); building and deepening connections to Judaism, Jewish life and community (chinuch), and building the cohesiveness between Jewish people, in the local community, Israel, and with Jewish people throughout the world (k’lal yisrael). One way we accomplish caring for others is raising funds through the Annual Community Campaign for programs and services that benefit those in our local and overseas Jewish communities. This is done through grants given to our partner agencies and synagogues. Women’s Philanthropy and Men’s Philanthropy provide a way to engage in campaigns to help us help others. The 2017/5777 Annual Community Campaign kicked off in the fall of 2016 and will continue throughout 2017. Below are some Myths and Facts to clarify some common questions that arise: MYTH: Women’s Philanthropy and Men’s Philanthropy are private clubs that you have to be asked to join. FACT: If you are a donor to the Annual Community Campaign, from a $1 to $100,000, this automatically allows you into Women’s or Men’s Philanthropy. You determine at what level. There are opportunities to participate at all donor levels. You can come and listen to a speaker, participate in a social service project, attend a mission to Israel, or go on

FACT: Yes, they are collectives creating philanthropy through donations to the Federation’s Annual Community Campaign, AND, in addition a place for leadership, empowerment, and coming together as community to repair the world. They each have a Cabinet to organize their outreach and campaign events. The main campaign event for women is the Arlene Solomon Visions Dinner on April 27th, 2017 and the men’s event is Above & Beyond which will be on May 9th, 2017. MYTH: I have to make an FOR THE additional pledge to go to ARLENE SOLOMON VISIONS DINNER Above & Beyond or Visions. FACT: Once you make your pledge to the Federation’s Annual Community Campaign, that’s it! Of course, you can always make an additional pledge or increase if you are so moved.

R E F L E C T I O N S

To Overturn the World By Rabbi Steven Moskowitz

Sometimes it seems like the world is upside down. The unethical get rewarded. The victims of Rabbi Steven oppression Moskowitz are sadly condemned as sources of oppression. Those who are eager to live with everyone in peace are instead shunned by their neighbors. During Purim, we take the prerogative to overturn the world…in order to set things right side up morally. The story of Purim tells of a tyrant who sought to impale Mordechai, but who is himself the one impaled. The historically disempowered Jews living in exile triumph over a mighty empire. The

ruler of that mighty empire, King Ahasuerus, deposes Queen Vashti as an assertion of male power (lest other wives be inspired by Vashti’s rebellious spirit!) only to end up taking orders from his new wife – Queen Esther. The joke is on the tyrant. We join in the joke by dressing up in costumes, putting on a farce called a Purim Shpiel, and booing and making noise with our groggers. The Jewish people have outlasted every tyrannical power raised against us. To remind us of this triumph and of the responsibilities that attend to it our tradition instructs us to hear the reading of the Megillah, to multiply our joy with festivities, to send treats to our friends, and to provide

tzedakah so that those in need will be able to share in the celebration. Purim is in many ways a farcical version of Passover, which follows one month later. The destruction of Haman is a humorous version of the defeat of Pharaoh. The story of Esther finds its parallel in the strong female character at the center of the Song of Songs, which we read during Passover. The carnival atmosphere of Purim is followed by the telling of the deadly serious story of the Exodus from Egypt. Perhaps the Jewish calendar is teaching us that it is important to laugh at those who abuse power as a prelude to studying the profound relationship between freedom and

collective responsibility that is at the heart of the Exodus story. The Book of Esther is an inspiring tale. To assist us in accessing its richest meaning the Talmud advises us to drink on Purim until we do not know the difference between “cursed be Haman” and “blessed be Mordechai.” This “not knowing” leads to a deeper knowing. The American novelist Donald Barthelme wrote in his essay “Not Knowing”:

unanticipated directions, there would be no invention…. Art’s project is fundamentally meliorative. The aim of meditating about the world is finally to change the world.

JFCS is gearing up for Race With A View 2017, to be held on May 7th. All are invited to get involved and move for access to mental health services for all in our community. Now in its 29th year, everyone can be part of Race With A View, whether you walk, run, volunteer, sponsor, or become a fundraiser. Race With A View is a 5K or 10K, run or walk along the beautiful waterfront of downtown Long Beach. Participants will gather at Pierpoint Landing near The Aquarium of the Pacific and Shoreline Park in downtown Long Beach, with onsite registration starting at 7:00 a.m. and the run/walk beginning at 8:00 a.m. “It is a wonderful way to showcase the beauty of where we live, while at the same time we can bring attention to the shortage of affordable mental health services in Long Beach and the important work that JFCS does to help fill this gap,” explained Dr. Mark Dressner, JFCS Board Member and this year’s event chair. “Also, as May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, Race With A View is a great way to kick off our public relations activities surrounding the importance of reducing the stigma of mental health diagnoses,” Dressner added. “This year

we are joining forces with other Long Beach agencies who share our passion for mental health services in a public awareness campaign called ‘Mind Your Mind’. We can leverage each other’s audiences and have a more effective impact,” said Dressner. Sponsorships are already flowing in. “We are thrilled that Linda Haley and Dr. Marvin Zamost are once again Title Sponsors of our event. We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Vikki Foley of Superior Foot & Ankle Care Center is a Silver Sponsor, and 2nd Street Beauty and the Port of Long Beach are Bronze sponsors,” noted Kathryn Miles, JFCS Executive Director. Potential sponsors can receive more than 200,000 impressions in a geographically pinpointed target market while aligning their business with an important social cause. Depending on the level of sponsorship, your business can receive exposure on banners, posters, newspaper advertisements, and more. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of tasks and roles in the planning stages and on race day. “If you have some time and energy and want to support a great cause, please let us know so we can put you to work. There is much to be done to make the event

successful, and volunteers are a key ingredient,” said Dressner. Volunteers can sign up online or call JFCS directly to register. Registration is now available online at www. racewithaview.com. You can also register directly on the website and pay with credit or debit cards. Once registered, participants will be able to create teams and ask their participants to register online. “We are again promoting the idea of participants inviting their friends to join them and form a team. It’s an ideal way to get a workout in, enjoy the company of friends, and then maybe indulge a little with brunch at one of the great restaurants nearby,” said Dressner. AJCC STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Message from the Executive Director

Our goal has always been, and will always be, for the Alpert JCC to be a warm, welcoming, safe and secure environment. We are constantly working to create this community for you. With the situation that occurred just a few weeks ago, it has given us the opportunity to see our safety and security procedures in action and to continue our constant evaluation with the LBPD and our security consultants. In addition, many of you shared your thoughts and made recommendations at the Town Hall Meeting, my breakfast with ECE parents, or directly to me in conversation or by e-mail. It is this partnership—AJCC members, our team of truly dedicated staff, building and community partners, and local law enforcement—that helps make our J special and gives us the ability to be that warm, welcoming, safe, and secure environment for all. So for all of these suggestions, I want to say thank you! As we continue to work with Long Beach Police and our security consultants, I want to share some ways that you can play a role in keeping our J safe: First, “if you see something, say something.” There are over a thousand people who come into our J every day. That’s a lot of pairs of eyes and ears in the building. If you see something that seems out of place, please let a member of our staff know ASAP. Second, everyone who comes into the J must check in at the front desk. You can do this by showing your proper badge or activity card. If you don’t have a badge, you will be asked to show your ID and sign in. This process is for everyone—staff, board members, parents picking up or dropping off their children. Even if you are in a rush, if you were just in the J and ran out to get something in your car, or if the guard or staff member “knows you,” you will be asked to check in at the front desk. We understand that this might take a little extra time, but if you have your membership badge, you will be able to enter the building quickly. I also know that some of you like to keep your badges in your bags or wallets and just use them to check in at the desk. We are asking for everyone to wear their badge while in the building. This is a very quick way for staff, other members, or our security team to quickly identify other members. Third, at the time of this going to print, car parking hanging tags and visitor badges have been ordered. The parking tags will hang from your rear-view mirror and will quickly identify your car to our security team to allow quicker access to the parking lot. Our membership department will be contacting you with the process to sign out your car tag. The visitor badges will be available at the front desk as you enter the building. These badges are another way to easily identify that everyone has checked into the building. We have also instituted our next level of communication system. This system, called REMIND, enables us to quickly communicate with all of our members either by text or e-mail (or both). If you have not received an e-mail to sign up, please stop by the Member Relations Courtesy desk for information. We understand that while we institute these new steps there will be some initial confusion, but we think that these steps, and others that will follow, will enable us to meet our goal of making the Alpert JCC the warm, welcoming, safe, and secure environment that makes this such a wonderful and special place.

Dana Schneider

Director of Camp and Young Adult Programs

Dana Schneider returned to the Alpert Jewish Community Center staff family last September as Director of Camp and Young Adult Programs. Growing up as an AJCC member in the old building, she attended Camp Kadimah, performed in Summer Stock, and participated in the youth and teen group. Dana visited Israel at age 15 with an AJCC group and developed great connections with her fellow travelers. When she left for Boston Conservatory and Wagner College, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Theater, she would return to Long Beach every summer to work at Camp Komaroff. As Dana explains, “After college, around 2006 or 2007, I started volunteering here, primarily organizing young adult activities. All of my high school friends had scattered around the country, and I was longing to create new friendships. Some wonderful community members raised funds—in particular, Edie Brodsky, the Tillman family, and about 6-10 other families. I hate to leave anyone out! They all worked together to raise funds to get GesherCity off the ground. I was delighted to be offered the position of Young Adult Program Coordinator. When the young woman who was running the teen program left, I was also offered that position, and I was thrilled to take it. I was working with Susan Paletz, so working with her again has been awesome!” “In that position, I ran the Teen Program and Summer Stock. I fell in love with Jewish education and working with kids. I then looked into graduate degrees that would give me more experience in the areas I was now most passionate about. I attended American Jewish University and earned a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Experiential Education.” After Dana got her graduate degree, she worked at Camp Alonim in Simi Valley, and was also the Camp Director at Camp Shelanu in Sacramento. From there, she moved back to Long Beach and was eager to once again work in the Long Beach Jewish community! “I had the good fortune to set up a meeting with Jeffrey Rips,” Dana explains, “We had a nice conversation, getting to know one another. I was able to express how much I would love to work in the Long Beach Jewish community again and shared my vision of what I could bring to the AJCC. When the Camp Director position opened last September, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to come back!” “I was also really excited to be back working on the GesherCity program that I had started 10 years earlier. Through Gesher, we are now reaching out and serving more age groups in the Jewish community. We have a dedicated committee of young adults who are engaged and want to see the program grow. It’s amazing to come back after all this time and see the program not only continuing, but also growing and changing to meet the needs of the community. I am so happy to be back. It’s like coming home. Some of my previous campers are now counselors! I’m grateful to get to watch them grow up and to have the opportunity to work with them as adults. It’s great to be back, tapped in, and to be working with this creative and - Interview by Erika Hillinger diverse community. I’m very grateful.”

Before I close, I would like to personally invite you to two great community events that are just around the corner. First is our Adults at Play event taking place the evening of March 4 in the CSULB Student Center. This will be a really fun-filled evening of great food, games, and music—all while raising money for our ECE and youth programs. Second is our annual community Purim Carnival, taking place from 12-3pm on March 12. Come out and enjoy the carnival rides and games, costume contests, Kosher BBQ, special performance by Mostly Kosher, and more. This fun-packed three hours is entertaining for the entire family. I hope to see you at both of these great events. Thank you again to everyone who has reached out with suggestions and with support. Working together, we will continue to make the Alpert JCC, Your Center For Life.

Linda Palitz

Linda Palitz, an active Silver and Fit member, first came to the JCC in 1999 because she needed a pool. They had turned off the heat in the pool in her condo, and she had been looking desperately for somewhere to swim. Once she discovered the J, she realized there was so much more than just the pool! As Linda tells it, “It all started with a 6:15 Spin class with Barbara Shoag; one day she invited me to lunch where she told me all about the wonderful things the J had to offer. She then invited me to sit on the Women’s Division Board of the Jewish Federation, which I was on for many years. I got a personal trainer here and eventually started working out with Mike Henderson until he left last year. After Mike, I started working out with Cindi Massengale, who is wonderful. “I was doing Elsie’s Extreme Spin and Extreme Pilates, and then Elsie helped train me for the Long Beach Half-Marathon in 2014. I had never done a Marathon before, and I actually came in 6th place for my age group! On October 11, 2015, my 73rd birthday, I ran the marathon again and came in 2nd place for my age group! One month after the Marathon, I developed sciatica, and Cindi helped nurse me back to health. It took about 6 months, but now I’m back here almost every day!

“Once I retired, I started coming to the J to work out Monday through Friday. I don’t work anymore, I just work out! Between Monday and Friday I have 12 classes. I have Silver and Fit with Kaiser Permanente, and my plan is to advertise the Jewish Center there so that seniors like myself will come here to work out also! I am 74 and very fit, and my vision is that this place will be overflowing with healthy seniors working out. If we support the JCC, the JCC can continue to support us. “I consider myself the ‘town crier’ for the J. If there is something special happening here, all the trainers will usually give me a minute of class time to make an announcement over the mic. I love all the people who I train with. Cindi is so knowledgeable in everything that she tells us about our bodies. She is absolutely wonderful. I love Faira, and Cheryl is a quiet surprise. She leads a great workout. I also work out with Del—she is quite the fabulous Yogi. I love them all. “I know I’m being very enthusiastic, but I love everything about this place. I can see how much things have improved here over the last few years. I love the greeters at the front. I love Jeffrey Rips and everyone who takes care of me at the front desk. I love the Gatov art gallery and really look forward to the Gottleib school exhibit every year. And I think most of all, I love the sound of the kids, especially in the morning. The JCC makes me happy. It’s my home. I know everyone just like they know me. It’s a great place!”

INNOVATE Hillel Program Breathes New Life Into Rising Student Leadership! In an effort to increase the breadth and depth of student leadership, Long Beach Hillel has launched INNOVATE Hillel, a semester- long, student leadership incubator for aspiring Jewish campus leaders. Our inaugural cohort of 6 student leaders dove into the new program through a mixture of educational seminars, as well as one-onone mentorship meetups and networking opportunities, all of which culminate in highimpact, capstone experiences. With a focus in either Social and Economic Justice, Interfaith Relations, or Shabbat Experiences, students have

been able to breath new life into our community. Alongside our students, Mentors and Educators have played a large role in shaping our own students’ success. Not only have our students gained valuable knowledge and experiences, but they have become exceedingly better leaders, now and into the future. Joel Bond, Long Beach Hillel’s Innovation Specialist says, “INNOVATE Hillel is a new program that brings the best community leaders and educators together in order to strengthen Jewish student leadership at CSU Long

Beach. From Hillel’s Office of Innovation to the Los Angeles Mayor’s Innovation Team, we have dedicated ourselves to student success and what that means from the standpoint of effective leadership in the modern age.” If you are a community member and are interested in becoming a partner in INNOVATE Hillel’s success, contact our Executive Director, Rachel Kaplan, at Rachel@ BeachHillel.org. Dr. Devin E. Naar

The CSULB Jewish Studies Program welcomes Dr. Devin E. Naar to Long Beach. He will speak at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, on Tuesday, March 14th, at 7:30 pm. Dr. Naar’s talk will focus on the “Jerusalem of the Balkans: Salonica”.

Half of the population of Salonica was composed of Sephardic Jews who spoke Ladino, also known as JudeoSpanish. So important were these Jews to the life of the city that into the 20th century, the markets closed every Saturday in honor of the Jewish Sabbath. Naar will explore how the end of the Ottoman Empire and Salonica’s incorporation into Greece affected the city’s Jews. They went from being an important part of a multicultural empire to a minority among a Greekspeaking Christian country. He will discuss the ways Salonica’s Jews sought to bridge the gap between their Ottoman past and their Greek future, struggling to figure out ways to be both

Jewish and Greek. Dr. Naar is the Isaac Alhadeff Professor of Sephardic Studies & Associate Professor of History at the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. His recent book, Jewish Salonica: Between Ottoman Empire and Modern Greece won the National Jewish Book Award and was a finalist for Sephardic Culture. This should be a fascinating talk about a very important Jewish community that deserves more attention. Like all Jewish Studies talks, this is free and open to the public.
