Yom Ha’Atzmaut Brings Us Closer with Israel & Jews Everywhere By Danny Levy, Director of Development

I

t is time once again to celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut and recognize the State of Israel’s founding as a homeland for Jews from throughout the world. As American Jews, this is a time when we bring upon reflection of our relationship to the global Jewish Community. Each year, 10% of funds raised through the Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign, over $100,000, goes to support Jews at risk in Israel and 60 other countries around the world. While this may seem like a small amount, it makes significant difference in the lives of many Jews who live in abject poverty, or who have faced significant hardship in order to move to Israel and establish new lives there. Foreign Aid to Those in Need Just search on any newsfeed or media outlet and you’ll learn about the daily struggles the international Jewish population faces on an everyday basis. From Hungary & the Balkans to Brazil and Yemen, there is a strong will to keep our fellow Jews alive and healthy. When abductions and murders against Yemeni Jews had risen sharply over the past decade, the call to spirit Jews out of the nation into safety were stepped up. In the Ukraine, relief and crisis intervention efforts immediately went into place to save countless lives affected by harsh winter blizzards. It is in our resilience against adversity that keeps our Jewish community grounded and to honor the value of Tikkun Olam, to make the world a better place. One of our Federation overseas partners, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) diligently continues to improve the lives of vulnerable Jewish members who are disenfranchised by famine, political strife, genocide, lack of healthcare, and so forth. JDC works every day to save the world’s poorest Jews – including at-risk youth, the elderly, and those with disabilities, to revitalize Jewish life among our younger generations, commit to ensuring leadership development for tomorrow’s Jewish leaders, and to rescue victims of global emergencies. Take for example the work of JDC and their “Supportive Community” program. Yeshayahu left Transnistria in 1948 and found himself in a detention camp. Upon release, Yeshayahu headed straight to Jerusalem to be reunited with his brother, who had fled World War II Europe a decade earlier. Yeshayahu joined the military forces right away to fight in the War of Independence, as well as four other wars throughout his life. As they aged and did not have any children, Yeshayahu and his wife

Beach Hillel’s Israel Fellow, Shelly Korenboim, worked with Artists for Israel to engage hundreds of students in a dialogue about peace, art, community service and Israel.

called upon JDC for assistance. JDC assigned an ongoing volunteer to maintain regular contact with the couple, complete home repairs, and provide critical social, health, and safety needs so Yeshayahu and his wife wouldn’t have to be displaced from their humble home. Another international partner is World ORT, whose mission is to secure essential education and job programs for our Jewish students and educators domestically and around the world. These programs foster and empower Jewish youth. World ORT has helped renovate and re-equip Kfar Hassidim and Hodayot Religious Youth Villages, as well as Abir Yaakov High School near Nahariya to serve 1,000 students. More than half of these students live on campus, free from persecution and violence. “Most of the students have experienced severe poverty, their challenges intensified by divorce, abuse or other factors,” said World ORT Director General & CEO Shmuel Sisso. “These schools are a last ditch attempt to help teenagers who would otherwise face a future even bleaker than their past.” Bringing Israel to Local Students Local benefiting partner agency Beach Hillel’s Israel Fellows program, created as a cooperation between the Jewish Agency for Israel and Hillel International in order to bring Israel to our local campuses, is currently filled by Israeli Shelly Korenboim. The goal of her two year fellowship is to organize educational programs and events about Israel’s culture, people, history, geography, and politics geared towards college students, as well as facilitate meaningful conversations about Israel, peace relations, and Zionism’s important role in Jewish identity and the global community.

Recently, Shelly was a major coordinator of Cal State University Long Beach’s Israel Week that took place from April 4th to April 8th. The week was filled with daily educational programs and events related to Israel’s culture and advocacy efforts that aimed to promote a pro-Israel cultural climate on campus. In order to make that week possible, Shelly partnered with student groups like 49’ers for Israel and Cal State Long Beach’s Jewish Studies Program. The week included: an Israeli themed block party in the center of campus, a creation of a peace wall with Artists for Israel, a free concert of the Israeli American rapper Kosha Dillz, a lecture by Palestinian human rights activist Bassem Eid, and a traditional Israeli Shabbat dinner. Commemorating the Future The Jewish Federation, in partnership with the Alpert Jewish Community Center, will host a Yom Ha’Atzmaut Community Celebration on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. The activities will take place starting at 5:30 pm and will center on celebrating Israel’s 68th birthday with Kosher Israeli-style food, arts & craft projects for children, and entertainment by Temple Israel’s choir and the International Peace Choir. At 7:00 pm, there will be a free public screening of the film Mekonen: The Journey of an African Jew. The mini-documentary follows the personal journey of a Mekonen Abebe, a young AfricanIsraeli Jewish soldier, as he returns to Africa to explore his roots, make peace with his past, and embrace his future in Israel. You can celebrate the birth of Israel, the support of Israel and our own community by making a pledge to the Jewish Federation’s 2016/5776 Annual Community Campaign. For more information, call Danny Levy at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1007.

THE STRENGTH OF A PEOPLE. THE POWER OF COMMUNITY.

Legacy Society Brunch Celebration By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development

Over sixty members of the Legacy Society came together this year for the annual Legacy Society Brunch as Jan Stein remarked to the group, “We are here today to acknowledge your philanthropic leadership. Legacy Society members serve as role models and an inspiration to other members of our community, including the younger generation, to give back and follow in your footsteps. ”By signing a letter of intent to leave a bequest in your will or trust of any size to the Jewish community - you are automatically a member of the Legacy Society. If you want more information about leaving your legacy, contact Sharon Kenigsberg at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008.

The Real Prize

R E F L E C T I O N S

By Rabbi Yitzchok Newman

Passover commemorates the birth of the Jewish people. The ‘Children of Israel’, seventy Rabbi Yitzchok in number, Newman went down to Egypt and were enslaved and persecuted. Moses transmitted G-d’s ringing message of ‘Let My People Go’ repeatedly to the ruling Pharaoh. And indeed, as free people, they emerged from the ‘Children of Israel’ to become the Jewish nation. Thus Passover is known as the birth of the Jewish people. The 49 day ‘Sefirah’ period we are presently in was to prepare the young nation to reach maturity as a people. Thus Shavuot, “the Holiday of the Ten Commandments and Receiving of the Torah on the

Fiftieth Day” became in a sense our Bar Mitzvah or passage to adulthood. This story happened last year in a synagogue in a small town in Siberia. There has been a resurgence of Jewish life, even in small towns in the former Soviet Union. It was Shavuot morning and the local Rabbi had created a campaign for the Jewish children. There were prizes that he was going to distribute to all who came to hear the reading of the Ten Commandments and a grand party followed with ice cream to top it all off. Every child got a raffle ticket towards prizes – some large and some small. The final drawing was for the grand prize which was a scooter. Little Daniel was ecstatic to have his name drawn as the winner. As the children with excitement gathered into groups to share their new

prizes, the local Chabad Rabbi noticed Daniel’s brother Michael in a corner crying. His first thoughts were that he was jealous that the grand prize went to his brother. However after further investigation a teacher explained to him the real reason. She explained that since Passover, Michael had been marking each of the 49 days until Shavuot with a sticker on his calendar preparing for the day that G-d would be giving a special gift – the Torah. The big day arrived and he came to a synagogue that was full of games and toys and even won a game himself. However, he was really waiting for ‘his’ real prize – a Torah book. Disappointed, he went to a corner and wept quietly. Upon hearing about the situation, the Rabbi’s young daughter went over to him and handed him a

gift of a Torah book she owned. Michael was ecstatic – he felt that he received the Torah. Young children in a Jewish day school have a wonderful opportunity to study the Torah in its original Hebrew. It is a pleasure as I enter classes at the Hebrew Academy and observe students who appreciate and understand this gift. The Torah is virtually a closed book to most of our people. Some may have had exposure to some parts but may have never had the opportunity to study it in depth. But, our contribution to the world need not be lost. I welcome you to come and visit the Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach where you will find the students receiving this gift every school day. Chag Sameach! Rabbi Yitzchok Newman is the Dean of The Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach, CA.

JEWISH LIFE & CULTURE

Message from the Executive Director From despair to exultation, from darkness to light, Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day) represent so much about the resilience of the Jewish spirit. In Jewish tradition, we are commanded to choose life (“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before your life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” Deuteronomy 30:19), and I love how we commemorate both these days at the J. For our Yom HaShoah service on May 1 at 2pm, I am so pleased that George Greenwald, brother of our own Ronnie Levine, will be speaking on his experiences in Hungary and Czechoslovakia before, during, and after the Holocaust. George, a former Orange County resident, was born in 1936 in Kosice, Czechoslovakia. Along with his mother, Edith, he narrowly escaped being sent to a concentration camp by the invading Germans. I hope you will join us for this moving community program with candle lighting, speakers, singing, and prayers. As part of the Holocaust Remembrance, from April 7-May 13, the Zena & Pauline Gatov Gallery is featuring the exhibit, “The Healing Art of Kalman Aron.” I hope you will take the time to visit this very impressive exhibit by a wonderful artist who is now in his 90s. His book, Into the Light: The Healing Art of Kalman Aron is available for purchase.

Chairman’s Reflections on Race With A View 2016 By Dr. Mark Dressner, Jewish Family & Children’s Service - Race With A View Committee Chairman

Dr. Mark Dressner

Chairman, Race With A View Committee

At the time of writing this column, I am full of anticipation for JFCS Race With a View 2016. This is one month prior to the race and we already have MORE than twice as many participants registered than at this point last year. Everyone wants to support our services, begin

a Sunday morning with a healthy event, and help bring attention to National Mental Health Awareness Month. Next month, we will feature a recap with photos from the Race. However, I don’t want to wait until next month to thank all of you who were involved in the event in some way, whether you walked or ran, formed a team, sought pledges from your friends and family to support your efforts, volunteered, or opted to sleep in on May 1st but sponsored the event instead.

On behalf of the Staff, the Race With A View Planning Committee, and the JFCS Board of Directors, I want to thank you for your commitment to this organization. Your participation ensures that JFCS thrives and continues to serve our community with affordable, professional counseling and support services for all who need us. As a physician, I am very well-aware of the need for mental health services, as well as the fact that there is a shortage of mental health

professionals to provide these much needed services. By utilizing extremely wellsupervised Master Degree candidates and Post-Graduate Interns in the mental health field who must have service hours in order to be licensed, we are filling an extreme need here in Long Beach. We are able to to empower people to make positive changes through professional, affordable counseling and support services. The Race is just one of a handful of fun ways we strive to fund

our services. We still need your ongoing support to ensure that vital mental health services are available to all, without regard to religion, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation. I want to end thanking again all of our supporters, from the volunteers, especially those from Wilson High School and local scout troops, to our major financial donors who help us make progress toward our vision of a community healed, one person, one family at a time.

Kathryn Miles Honored as Jewish Family & Children’s Service 2016 Woman of Distinction Revives “Portraits” Newsletter Kathryn Miles

Executive Director, Jewish Family & Children’s Service

JFCS Board President Rick Burney is pleased to announce that Executive Director Kathryn Miles has been named one of the 2016 Women of Distinction by Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell. This recognition celebrates the contributions

of an outstanding group of women going above and beyond in the Long Beach community as part of celebrating Women’s History Month. “Our Board of Directors was unanimous in its decision to nominate Kathryn for this honor. We are very proud of her tremendous accomplishments as Executive Director of JFCS.

Getting the word out about JFCS is of prime importance to the agency’s future, and the JFCS management team is reviving one of the triedand-true means of sharing the impactful work that is done every day by JFCS volunteers and staff. “Portraits” was for many years the quarterly newsletter that was sent to a list of supporters, and JFCS has thrived under her the new re-birthed version, leadership,” says Burney. our wish list for quite some time, and we were fortunate that Judy Perlman stepped forward to express interest in volunteering her time to help us,” said Kathryn Miles, JFCS Executive Director. “We realize that even though the way people seek and ingest information has changed, the desire to have more in-depth understanding of our programs and services has not changed. The new “Portraits” will be available to readers on our website as

well as in print, and all are invited to ask to be added to our mailing list to receive the print version. We can also e-mail it directly to a reader’s inbox if preferred,” she added. The first edition was mailed in late April and can be found at www. jfcslongbeach.org by clicking on Publications. Tech Conference Features Preschoolers Experience a Star Program & Hebrew Academy Education with Hebrew Academy

Representatives from 17 West Coast Jewish Day Schools come for forum.

On March 30th, the Consortium of Jewish Day Schools (CoJDS) brought together over 40 Jewish Day school administrators to stay on the cutting edge of technology. As a demonstration of the need for such professional development, educators gathered from 17 schools in 10 cities from across the West Coast to learn from experts in the field. Participants traveled as far as Vancouver, Canada to participate. The broad spectrum of religious schools were represented, including schools who cater exclusively to unaffiliated community populations, as well as those who work with the Orthodox community. The Hebrew Academy is proud to have been chosen as the site for this prestigious conference on technology in Jewish Education. The decision to bring the conference in the Hebrew Academy Huntington Beach was based on the decision of CoJDS National Chairman Rabbi Dr. Heshy Glass, to present to conference participants a model school that excels in all aspects that the Consortium holds vital. “Rabbi Newman and his staff spared neither effort nor expense to create an elegant and professional environment for educators to learn from both experts in the field and from interaction

with colleagues,”said Rabbi Dr. Heshy Glass. Dr. Eli Shapiro, Founder of Digital Citizenship Project, teamed up with the Consortium of Jewish Day Schools, to educate parents and children on responsible technology use and oversight. Bringing data from studies of both children in Jewish day schools and schools at large, Dr. Shapiro and his colleague, Mrs. Temima Feldman discussed issues such as sleep deprivation, cyber bullying, changes in social interaction, the anonymity and impulsivity of the web, and how a student’s digital footprint can have a greater impact on future job prospects than good grades. Yossi Frankel, Technology Specialist at the Center for Initiatives in Jewish education (CIJE) demonstrated how to use flipped and blended learning and live video streaming to connect schools to their communities. Mrs. Batsheva Frankel, Dean of Faculty at Arete Preparatory Academy, provided attendees a host of the most up-to-date resources to implement and enhance Judaic lessons. A full 100% of conference participants said their expectations were met or exceeded and would recommend the conference to a colleague in a post conference survey.

Preschoolers experience an award-winning program at Hebrew Academy. They are taught the appropriate skills and knowledge that will become their foundation for all future education. Hebrew Academy is the #1 Jewish preschool in Long Beach and Orange County, rated as a “High Quality Preschool” by the Orange County Department of Education and accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The current focus for the preschool is STEM experimentation. STEM is curriculum based on education and mathematics. The students have been experimenting with these concepts on their own level of development. STEM learning is a hot topic in the preschool community. It may sound intimidating for a preschooler to conquer, but we do STEM practices everyday in our classrooms. Their teachers are experienced and caring professionals who provide a

Preschooler’s learning to be tomorrow’s professional leaders through the STEM program’s creative curriculum and learning lessons.

happy, stimulating program in a safe and secure setting. The freeway is close and conveniently located. Core preschool hours are from

8:00 am - 3:30 pm with a choice of half day or partial week and extended care from 7:00 am - 6:00 pm. Please call for more information.

Mega Shabbat OC Weekend From May 13th - 15th, join the many Jewish families of Orange County who come from all backgrounds and religious affiliations for a fabulous weekend of friendship, laughter, and genuine Jewish Spirit and celebrate Shabbat as it was meant to be. Shabbat OC combines uplifting and inspiring lectures and engaging workshops, with superb Shabbat cuisine and community building and guarantees a spiritually uplifting experience. Our guest speaker for the weekend is Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Jacobson. He is one of the most passionate and

mesmerizing communicators of Judaism today; culling his ideas from the entire spectrum of Jewish thought and making them relevant to contemporary audiences. Over the last fifteen years, Rabbi Jacobson has traveled the world and has addressed hundreds of communities, schools, and universities all across the globe. Rabbi Jacobson is the first rabbi to have given the keynote address to the U.S. Military Chaplains and to the 34,000 employees of the National Service Agency. He has inspired people of all backgrounds with the majestic

depth of Torah and Judaism. Shabbat OC offers an outstanding children’s program run by the Staff of Silver Gan Israel. The children’s program runs through all meals and lectures to afford every family member a phenomenal experience they will cherish forever!
