Federation President’s Message Tribute to Mort Stuhlbarg
Daryl Phillips Jewish Federation Board President
Spring is here. Our Passover celebration is in the rearview mirror, with summer fast approaching. And while we can appreciate the gentleness of the season, our Federation building and campus, along with all of our agencies, have endured quite a winter. In the wake of hateful threats made against the Alpert Jewish Community Center, we have worked with the Long Beach Police Department and other local and national agencies to enhance and improve campus security. While it has all come at a tremendous cost to our agencies, we are fully confident in the safety and security programs and protocols that are now in place. The record-setting rains that we experienced left us with structural damage throughout our building that requires immediate attention. Rainwater came in from all sides of the building, including the roof. Now that we have weathered the storms, we face the task of cleaning up. Second floor substructure repair has already begun, and work to replace the roof will soon be underway. Flooring and carpeting will follow, along with tile repair and replacement, cleaning and painting the walls and doors, and putting in a new gymnasium floor to replace the water damaged floor. Finally, thanks to the generosity of our community following the Legacy of Leadership event, we will be installing our new campus-wide solar energy system. We have a lot on our plate. And at the same time, the Jewish Federation and each of our agency budgets are stretched beyond capacity with no immediate signs of relief. Our long term goal is preserving our beautiful building and campus for decades to come. That makes repairing the building a priority that cannot be postponed or ignored. We find ourselves dealing with imminent capital emergencies on a daily basis. Your Federation Board of Directors has been proactive in addressing these, along with so many other issues, head on. And as we address these many maintenance and capital improvements, we know that it’s going to take a lot of money to resolve these issues. Initially, the Federation will have to borrow funds to complete the required building repairs. This debt will be guaranteed by campaign pledges already received. Additional funds will be needed for future repairs and upgrades, 2 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |

as an example; for our aging air conditioning and heating system. A Building Campaign Committee has been formed and will be calling for donations for this very important campaign. Please answer our call. Your donation is critical to the future of our community. Our agencies will continue to focus their efforts on the important work of creating and implementing the many programs that benefit our community, while the Federation will tend to the business of building and infrastructure management. In my previous message, I mentioned that the Federation is working with professional building management experts to maintain our building. This engagement has already proven to be valuable, providing us with measurable improvements and reducing our expenses. However, we still have a long way to go. Once it’s up and running, our solar energy system will provide us with considerable savings on our utilities. These savings will assist in replenishing our reserve funds for future building and campus needs. On a much more positive note, the new Lentzner Leadership Fellows program, designed to grow and mentor future Federation leaders, is receiving accolades from all of its participants, mentors and mentees alike. There are fifteen participants. Our Alpert New Leaders Forum, with a current class of fifteen, will come away with a better understanding of how they can pursue volunteer opportunities and even board participation in the agency or synagogue of their choice, throughout the community. I’ve always considered the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus and Alpert Jewish Community Center as gifts given to us by deeply caring and generous people for all of our community to use and enjoy. Now it is our turn. As future generations follow in our footsteps, I hope that you feel the same sense of moral obligation that I do to protect our campus and provide a safe, secure and sound environment for all to enjoy.

Mort Stuhlbarg (August 27, 1937 - April 14, 2017). Zichrono Livracha - May his memory be a blessing.
We mark with sadness, the passing of community philanthropist Mort Stuhlbarg, beloved husband of Susan Stuhlbarg, father of Laurie Stuhlbarg and Michael Stuhlbarg, father-in-law of Andy Harris, father-in-law of Mai-Linh Stuhlbarg, and grandfather of Eli Harris. Mort left an indelible mark on our community and touched the lives of so many, as a mensch, and a pillar of our community. Mort was the driving force in building the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus as Chair of the Capital Campaign, after the passing of Elbert Kronick and Roselle Summer. He served as president of both the Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation and mentored numerous Jewish leaders. Mort also served on Temple Israel’s Board of Directors. Mort raised millions for charitable organizations in his more than 50 years of fundraising in Long Beach. He was a founder of the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House, where he chaired the campaign to build the house. In addition, Mort served on the National Board of Directors of the National Conference of Christians & Jews, as well as a president of the local California Conference for Equality & Justice (CCEJ). He recently chaired a multimillion-dollar campaign to build an emergency room specifically for seniors at St. Mary’s Hospital, and acted in multiple leadership roles for International City Theatre, Child Net Youth and Family Services, Long Beach Symphony, CSULB 49’er Foundation, among many others. Donations in Mort’s memory may be made to: Jewish Federation’s Maintenance Fund for benefit of the Alpert Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Rabbi Moskowitz’s Discretionary Fund at Temple Israel, and CCEJ. Mort will forever be in our hearts.

Success From Schmaltz By Danny Levy, Director of Development
Above & Beyond, a Jewish Federation’s Men’s Philanthropy Annual Community Campaign event will be held on Tuesday, May 9th, 2017. This is our 4th Annual event bringing together men from the community to show the power we have when working together. The power to care for the vulnerable, to commit to the survival of the Jewish people, to invest in the future of our children, and to rescue those in need, no matter where they live or how they worship. This year’s event will be held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. “Don’t miss this opportunity
to hear an outstanding panel of speakers and to honor the men that contribute so greatly to our Jewish community!” stated Chair Aaron Kern The evening will begin with a reception starting at 6:00 pm, which includes appetizers and drinks in the Lenztner Family Promenade and Shoag Rotunda. Then at 7:30 pm, we will move into the Lipeles Family Auditorium for the special Success from Schmaltz Panel. We have a great line-up of men from our community to share a little about their lives and success. The moderator for the panelists is Sasha Strauss, a product of our area, along with Josh Lowenthal and Richard
Wolpow. From just over the far away hill, the San Fernando Valley, Steve Meister. And if that wasn’t enough, we are also honoring 13 men from our community organizations and local synagogues who go “above and beyond” right here at home. It is a great group of honorees. We are very thankful for what they do for our community. Don’t miss it! Check to see if there is still space available by calling 562.426.7601 ext. 1417, by emailing events@jewishlongbeach.org, or visit the event website at jewishlongbeach.org/ above&beyond.

Ethical Wills
Much in American Society is focused on the transmission of property and wealth, especially when we consider matters at the end of one’s life. However, each individual is more than the property or wealth accumulated during a life time. What happens to the wisdom we gained from life’s experiences? What about our values, hopes and dreams? How are those transmitted to the next generation? An ethical will is a way to share those utlimately important and uniquely personal aspects of one’s life with family, friends, and community. An ethical will is not a legal document - it does not transmit or transfer physical assets. Instead, an ethical will is a personal expression of what is of ultimate value in life, what matters most in a person’s life. Ethical wills are not some new-age innovation, but rather have their origins deep in Jewish tradition - in the Tanakh, Talmud, and many other sources. An ethical will may be one of the most personal and meaningful gifts you can leave to your family and community.

Music and Poetry: Anchors of the Soul By Rabbinic Student Zachary Golden
The modern world tosses and turns against our peace of mind: an inflammatory the Rabbinic Student media, on Zachary Golden internet the go, isolation, distance, and a lack of direction. There are very few healthy coping mechanisms that people can turn to – drugs and food give temporary release but can create long-term problems. But our tradition is very clear that there is something transcendent in our world that can lift us up from depression and allow us to view our lives with a higher perspective. When King Saul was tormented by his demons, he called for David to play music for him. Then, and only then, was he relieved and at
peace from a madness that would cause to him to try to destroy David over and over (and himself in the process). David, when he became king, continued his passion and delight for music, and our tradition credits him with the composition of the Book of Psalms. The Book of Psalms recounts songs that were sung at Temple worship, as well as personal poems and struggles in the face of G-d and life. These Psalms never ceased to be comforting to people because of their reach into human emotions. They validate our feelings of sadness or joy, and place it all into the context of where we belong in this strange, mysterious universe. As an example, examine Psalm 90, the Psalm of Moses: “For all our days pass away under your wrath;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.” (Verse 9) This idea of crushing sadness over mortality and futility is balanced by the ideas of hope that emerge. “Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.” (Verse 14) Our years of difficulty can become years of joy when we look to a higher power, according to this psalm. I think this psalm is an excellent example of touching upon universal feelings, and is why the rabbis of the Talmud suggested reading the whole Book of Psalms on a regular basis. It is good to constantly re-explore one’s self to center in on what’s important versus what is superficial. Beyond words, music in its pure form reaches the soul. From our tradition, we have Hasidic niggunim, wordless
songs, that stimulate feelings of clinging to the divine. But even from ancient times, the phenomenon of prophecy was hinted at as being stimulated through music. When the prophets of the Tanakh prophesied, they sometimes asked for musicians to bring them into a state of connectedness with G-d. Music engages the entire being, from body to soul, and reminds a person of who they are, so that a person is not beholden to discordant feelings of negativity that are unexplored by the passive mind. Prophecy, for its part, is described as a state of ecstasy, of both complete energy and peace. Our tradition has drawn upon this connection for millennia. Poetry and music propel me through my days, no matter how difficult they are.

If I go through a day without poetry or music, I stay disoriented within myself. Over time, I have found that I can compose music or poetry, letting myself loose to my imagination – and it reminds me of who I am. Frequently, we find that negative influences beyond us or within us seek to redefine away from our truth – but in poetry and music, we must uncover who we are and free ourselves from the pain that is beyond us in order to make it as beautifully as we can, or to listen to it with full attention. Zachary Golden is a second year rabbinical student at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University in Los Angeles. He is a Long Beach native, and currently serves as a rabbinic intern at Congregation Sholom of Leisure World in Seal Beach, CA.

However, I well aware of the need for
mental health services, as well as the fact that there is a shortage of mental health professionals to provide these much needed services. By utilizing extremely wellsupervised Master Degree candidates and post-graduate Interns in the mental health field who must have service hours in order to be licensed, we are filling an extreme need here in Long Beach. Not only do we directly deliver mental health services but we also make it possible to provide more licensed mental health providers to the community after their training. We are able to empower people to make positive changes through professional, affordable counseling and support services. RWAV is just one of a handful of fun ways we strive to fund our mission.

We still need your ongoing support to ensure that vital mental health and social services are available to all, without regard to religion, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation. I want to end thanking again all of our supporters,
from the volunteers, especially those from Wilson High School and NCJW, to our major financial donors who help us make progress toward our vision of a community healed, one person, one family at a time.
Celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month! By Leslie R. Evans, LCSW, JFCS Director of Social Work & Older Adult Services
In recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month, I wish I could write an article that celebrates some of the famous individuals who have made significant contributions to the world while living with mental illness. Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Barbra Streisand, Frank Lloyd Wright, Georgia O’Keefe, Harrison Ford, Irving Berlin, Tipper Gore, & Walt Disney are just a few of the thousands of people who have not allowed their mental illnesses to prevent them from becoming celebrated artists, poets, scientists, actors, politicians… even President of the United States. I’d like to write an article about the millions of other smart, talented, successful, loving, brave individuals who are diagnosed with mental
health issues and accomplish extraordinary things every day…. Sadly, though, the first word that comes to mind when thinking about mental health awareness is “stigma.” According to the Webster’s New World Dictionary, the short definition of stigma is, “a mark of disgrace or reproach.” It is a negative perception that causes someone to devalue or think less of another person. In actuality, the meaning of stigma is really about discrimination and hate. People with mental illness represent one of the most deeply stigmatized groups in American culture. Many of the over 46 million Americans who suffer from some type of mental health disorder often feel diminished, devalued

and fearful because of the negative attitude society holds toward them. As a result, people struggling with mental health challenges may not get the help they need for fear they will be discriminated against. The desire to avoid public stigma causes people to drop out of treatment or avoid it entirely for fear of being associated with negative stereotypes. The impact of stigma is also felt by millions of family members, friends, and coworkers of those struggling with mental health issues. People with mental health issues cope with stigma on a daily basis. But why should they? Mental illness is a disease just like diabetes and cancer and heart disease. Why, then, are people

with mental illness shamed, humiliated, and discriminated against more than those with other illnesses? During Mental Health Awareness month, I encourage everyone
to think about what you can do to combat the negative stereotypes surrounding those with mental health issues. Stigma should not be a barrier to seeking treatment.
Join us on May 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the Art Theatre 2025 E. 4th St. Long Beach A short documentary about a beauty salon located inside of a community mental health facility in Philadelphia. The people who run it are in recovery from mental illness and we get an intimate look at the incredible willpower they employ to take control over their lives and make profound changes for the better. Message from the Executive Director
Ronnie Levine
As we once again look toward summer, this year May brings us the Jewish holidays of Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day), Lag B’Omer and Shavuot. On Passover, the people of Israel were freed from their enslavement to Pharaoh, and on Shavuot they were given the Torah and became a nation. Lag B’Omer occurs on the 33rd day between Passover and Shavuot, and weddings, parties, and haircuts are commonly scheduled on this day among Ashkenazi Jews. Shavuot is traditionally celebrated by staying up all night to study Torah, reading the Book of Ruth, and eating dairy foods such as cheesecake and blintzes. All three of these holidays celebrate life, an important Jewish value you can see reflected every day at the Alpert JCC, and May is no exception as we are gearing up for new activities and summer camp!
Adult Program Coordinator
Ronnie Levine is one of the tireless AJCC staff members who really makes this place run. She does so much for the J that it’s hard to know how she gets it all done. As Adult Program Coordinator, Ronnie helps with the Senior programs, the Jewish Life and Culture programs, and most of the special events, including the Jewish film festival, Purim carnival, vendor fairs, and the upcoming Yom Ha’Atzmaut program. Most of the trifolds in the Promenade are Ronnie’s handiwork, and you can see her staffing many programs. Ronnie is truly an invaluable part of the AJCC team.
Beginning on May 1, we start celebrating Yom Ha’Atzmaut! We will have a holiday table in the Promenade on Monday morning, and on Tuesday evening, May 2 at 5:30pm, we celebrate with the Temple Israel Choir, the Shtetl Menschen (our very own AJCC Klezmer band), and lots of arts and crafts projects for the kids! There will also be Israeli-style vegetarian food for purchase, followed by a free film screening of Touchdown Israel at 7pm.
Ronnie was born and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where her parents met after World War II. Her mother and brother are both Holocaust survivors who came to the United States in 1947. Her father emigrated here from Hungary in 1927 when he was 16. Ronnie went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she got her bachelor’s degree in English Lit. Her brother had moved to California in 1962, and when she graduated from college, he invited her to go to Yosemite with his family. She fell in love with California and never went home! Ronnie got a job working for the Irvine Company, which, she says, “was a great place to work at the time, and that’s where I met my husband, Mike.
Also this month, we are excited to be showing the film 50/50: Rethinking the Past, Present & Future of Women + Power by Tiffany Shlain on Wednesday, May 10 at 7pm. The J will be joining thousands of organizations in a global conversation about what it will take to get a more gender-balanced world. This free event should be excellent, and I hope you will join in the conversation!
“When I got married, I had to get a different job, and I started working for CASA advertising, a job I absolutely loved. Mike got a job with the Contra Costa Times, and we moved up to Walnut Creek, where we lived for 14 years. I had a number of different jobs in those years. Mike then got a job at The Daily Breeze in Torrance in 1991, and we moved back down. My parents had already moved to Orange County, and I joined my brother and his family, my cousin, my mother-in-law, sisterin-law, and extended family. It was nice to move back and be so close to family!
Our annual Mother’s Day Vendor Fair will be in the Promenade from May 8-11, 9am-4pm. I’m sure you’ll find something for everyone on your Mother’s Day (and Father’s Day!) list. We will be having another great Senior Shabbat Lunch on Friday, May 19 at noon, and on May 24 at 6pm, you can enjoy another wonderful cooking class from Eileen Gelso. This time it’s Israeli Cooking! Her Jamaican cooking class was a big hit. I’m sure this will be even better! And our final Israel for Reel film for the season, Up the Wrong Tree, will be on Thursday, May 25 at 7pm.
“My son was born in 1994, and I found the J in 1999. I was looking for a pre-K program, and once we found it, that was it! Once you’re here, you’re a part of the JCC for life! My son went to camp here, and he was involved with Summer Stock, which I volunteered for. I also volunteered for the film festival, and I got to be really good friends with Susan Paletz. Most of my friends are people that I’ve met here— parents I met at preschool, people that I work with, and some of the members that I’ve met.
Please be sure to stop by our Holiday Table in the AJCC Promenade on Monday, May 1, to celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut, and Tuesday, May 30 to celebrate Shavuot. And last, but certainly not least, Camp Komaroff begins June 19 and registration is open! For complete information on camp and the rest of the programs above, please visit our website, www.alpertjcc.org.
After my job with the text book company ended in 2008, I went to work in the office at Temple Beth Shalom. In 2010. I realized I needed more than a part-time job, and was hired to be a teaching assistant with the ECE. When the Adult Department was restructured in 2014, I started working full-time as the Program Administrative Assistant.
I wish you all a very happy Yom Ha’Atzmaut, and a wonderful May, and I look forward to seeing you all around the AJCC, Your Center For Life!
“This is the best job I’ve ever had. I love working here. I like the diversity of the job— I get to work with a lot of people and do a lot of work on my computer as well. I’ve gotten to know many members, and there’s such variety in the programming. You just don’t get that anywhere else. My co-workers are all hard-working and nice. I feel like my department—Susan Paletz, Susan Mathieu, and Shlomit Jackson— make a really great team. I also work a lot with membership, customer service, our graphic designer John Reynoso, and the entire maintenance team. Irene Velasquez in Membership even helped me solve a parking lot emergency once! More than anything, I love my job because I feel like I’m making a difference.”

What’s New at SGI Children become more confident youngsters at camp as a result of the fulfilling activities every day! SGI hosts a huge 63’ two lane waterslide that kids love. Some campers are apprehensive about the big slide. So this year, SGI has added an additional smaller inflatable water slide for the younger and more cautious campers. Rated for children from just 3’ tall, the Slippity Slide is 18’ long and 12’ tall, has a splash zone at the end of the slide and is protected with high inflatable walls and bumpers. There are always amazing improvements being made to the camp program. We encourage you to view them at www.campsgi.com/new. “The key to an engaging program is having exciting features that speak to many different interests and age levels,” said Rabbi Sender Engel, the camp director.
“We have been fortunate to be able to add quite a number of unique items that will thrill our campers.” The camp program runs from June 26 through August 25 with flexible enrollment options. Parents will be glad to know that their children are in a safe environment and will be coming home with new lessons, friends, skills and spirited camp songs. The phenomenal camp counselors are positive role models and have a warm, nurturing touch. The camp is
accredited by the American Camp Association and has its own EMT on staff. The summer camp program is for children ages 2-14 and is conveniently located right off the 405 freeway. Transportation, as well as extended care and hot lunches are available. Parents can learn more, register, and even request a camp tour by visiting www.CampSGI.com or by contacting Rabbi Sender at (949) 381-5610 ext. 101 or sender@campsgi.com.
My School is Shrinking As part of the transition towards a 21st century style education, The Hebrew Academy is leading the way with extensive Project-Based Learning (PBL) programs. The second semester PBL public presentation was an extraordinary in-depth and hands-on projectintegrating mathematics and English. Kicking off the project, the students visited the Broad Museum located in Los Angeles, CA. They viewed an exhibit entitled “Under the Table” which showcased unique works of art scaled to larger-than-life proportions. Subsequently, students embarked on their own investigation of the concepts of scaling and proportions, using what they learned from classes
about measurement and conversions, as well as devising their own scale factors which use specific mathematical criteria! All of this learning was grounded in Common Core Standards for Ratios and Proportional Relationships. Middle school students took life-sized objects and scaled them down to the point that they could be printed out at our Computer Center’s futuristic 3D printer! PreAlgebra students scaled an object to be proportionally larger than the original. These students constructed life size board games from the smaller models, ensuring that all the pieces remained proportional. In addition, our smart PreAlgebra students constructed

geometric shapes using a straightedge, a compass, and a protractor. Our Algebra 1 students used their programming skills, as well as their knowledge of different types of equations and inequalities such as ellipses, parabolas, and complex trigonometric functions to create logos for a hypothetical toy company. They even learned how to make interactive moving parts for their logos! All of their work heeded the learning and parameters of proportionality, ensuring that their logos could easily be blown up or shrunk for different uses. Parents of our brilliant students were invited to attend a presentation to be blown away at the incredible

depth of knowledge their children had for such scientific matters, as well as the child’s articulation, both orally and written, in scaling. The Hebrew Academy is grateful to the Alevy Foundation for funding the outstanding program in the middle school that has successfully launched the school into 21st century learning.

This is Stewart Greenberg. Lawyer. Husband. Grandfather. Stewart was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma in 2012. Top US doctors gave him just three months to live. “Miracles do happen,” Stewart says. “They happen at Hadassah.” Dr. Michal Lotem of the Hadassah Medical Organization saved his life with a unique Hadassah immunotherapy vaccine. This is what we do. Stewart wants the world to know that Hadassah hospitals are changing the way we fight cancer with cutting-edge new treatment protocols. This is what we do.
Stewart is asking you to help Hadassah do what we do best: Save lives and get closer to a cure for cancer. Donate.
