FEATURE STORY
Thank You - Solar Project Ribbon Cutting By Danny Levy, Director of Development
On Sunday March 25, 2018, the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus celebrated the completion of the Solar and Roof project by flipping the ceremonial switch on over 1,700 solar panels. The panels cover 75% of the campus roof and half of the parking lot. The panels will bring an over 50 percent cost savings in electrical energy for the campus, saving nearly $2.5 million over the 25 year expected lifetime of the system. The solar array represents one of the largest and most advanced solar installations in the city of Long Beach. The project also includes 6 EV charging stations. The $1.5 million dollar donor funded project, working with Alacrity Energy, began construction in late January 2018 and was completed on time and on budget. One donor family in particular stepped up to help with the majority of the funding. An additional $350,000 was raised from the rest of the community, showing a great interest in making the campus more sustainable. On top of this, the Federation allocated $600,000 to

Above & Beyond is the Jewish Federation Men’s Philanthropy Annual Community Campaign event for men across the spectrum of our Jewish community. We join together to honor, learn and share the strength we have together, to care for the vulnerable, and to invest in the future of our children. This years event was amazing. We honored 13 incredible men from our local Jewish community agencies and synagogues, for their many contributions in going “above and beyond” as
each other through Jewish values and commitment to community. Through business and social networking, leadership, philanthropy, and leveraging its collective power, Men’s Philanthropy provides our community with assistance when needed, and support for Jews here at home, Israel, and around the world. Beach Hillel
Hillel will receive a grant to continue to enhance their leadership training for students. Chabad of Los Alamitos will receive a grant to expand the services, volunteer training and quality of their Ethel’s Chicken Soup Program - which brings hot meals and warm visits to local seniors and families in crisis. The program engages high school students and others- bringing generations together and serving those in need.
Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS)
JFCS will receive a grant from the Ruth and Louis Davis Transportation Fund which will help provide seniors with safe and accommodating rides to activities at synagogues and events held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. Providing seniors with transportation will enhance their social life, health and well-being, and provide them with the opportunity to gain support from fellow Jewish seniors and agencies in their community.
Temple Beth David
Temple Beth David will receive a grant for a Shabbat weekend retreat for families. The goals of the weekend are to build closer relationships within one another, to offer a camp like experience in an informal environment for Jewish learning through discussion, song, prayer, and arts and craft activities. Experiences like this can strengthen Jewish identity and provide life long memories.
Temple Israel
Temple Israel will receive a grant to provide a series of programs related to science and Judaism. The overall theme of the series of programs is Artificial Intelligence: Exciting Opportunities, Challenging Ethical Issues. As part of the series, there will be programs for adults, for youth, and for youth and adults together. This grant would help to fund an element of the youth and the joint youth-adult programs. Temple Israel will collaborate with area synagogues to include their students in these sessions.
The Hebrew Academy
Hebrew Academy will receive a grant to expand on a pilot program launched in the 2017-2018 school year, which helped support struggling students, in need of behavioral support. As a result of systematic assessment and observation, and with the help of a professional behavior specialist, the Hebrew Academy has determined that behavior support is a necessary component of their efforts to improve academic achievement for all students. The behavioral specialist will help train teachers to attend to the needs of the struggling student while effectively meeting the needs of the rest of the class. The grant will also help enhance the quality of health and social services at a Jewish Day School.

The Torah and the Jewish People By Rabbi Abba Perelmuter
Seven weeks after celebrating the holiday of Passover we come together to celebrate Rabbi Abba another Perelmuter great Jewish holiday called Shavuot. Unfortunately, many Jews are unfamiliar with this beautiful holiday and never get a chance to experience the wonderful Mitzvot and customs associated with it. Shavuot is the time when we commemorate the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai over 3,300 years ago. At Mount Sinai G-d and the Jewish people
entered covenant that still exists today. We, the Jewish people, accepted the Torah and committed to keeping its Mitzvot as carefully as possible. For over 3,300 years Jewish parents have been passing down the Torah and its teachings to the next generation. Each generation has held the Torah closely and made sure to instill the values in their children. This is a responsibility that is given to every Jewish father and mother, the responsibility of Jewish education. The Book of Proverbs says, “Hear, my child, the teaching of your father and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.“ This verse says to
me that the burden of Jewish education, and ultimately Jewish survival, is not on the schools or Shuls or even the community, but on the fathers and mothers who are raising their children. Young Jewish parents need to take this idea seriously. In a world of short attention spans and fads that fade quickly, our bond with the Torah is threatened. Now more than ever, we need to show our children the important lessons of the Torah, the beauty of the Mitzvot, and the sanctity of the Jewish nation. Let Shavuot be a reminder to all of us of the deep commitment that our people have to the Torah.
Unlike the last holiday when we had to eat less than desirable foods to commemorate the miracles done for the Jews, during this holiday of Shavuot, we eat cheesecake and blintzes and decorate our houses with flowers; why would we want to miss out on this?! This year, Shavuot is on Sunday, May 20, 2018. Go to Shul, read the Ten Commandments, eat delicious food, and be an active participant in a project that has spanned 3,300 years. Happy Shavuot! Rabbi Abba Perelmuter is the Senior Rabbi of Shul By The Shore in Long Beach, CA.

Message from the Executive Director It’s hard to believe that the sunniest season is only two months away! Here at your AJCC, excitement is building for all the many programs and classes offered during summertime. From Camp Komaroff specialty programs like teen river rafting, WeBreak Hip Hop dance classes, and a Musical Theater Workshop, to Summer of Fun’s Popsicles in the Promenade and Tuesdays at the Pool—there is something for everyone! We can’t wait for you to jump in. On Sunday, June 24, I hope you’ll join us for our second-ever Jewish Festival and Open House. This day-long event is a terrific opportunity to introduce friends and family to all the J has to offer, and to check out all the summer activities on the horizon. Free and open to the entire community, the Open House and Jewish Festival features samplings of our (delicious) Jewish traditions, BBQ on the pool deck, free fitness classes, and tours of our Early Childhood Education Program. Mark your calendars now for this fun and engaging day! Speaking of our award-winning preschool (did you see that we were just voted Most Loved Preschool in Long Beach by Macaroni Kid?), registration for summer and fall sessions is now open! Classes fill up quickly, so please see the ECE Front Desk, call (562) 426-7601 x1090, or visit alpertjcc.org for more information. In addition, we welcome you to register now for Camp Komaroff Summer 2018 and Kids’ University 2018-2019 (visit alpertjcc.org). No matter your age or lifestyle, the Alpert JCC has an activity for you. We’re proud to partner with Hadassah Southern California to present Healthy Skin Is In on May 8—the third installment of our Women’s Health Series. This educational presentation will address melanoma awareness and the latest data on prevention, treatment, and research. And on May 14, we’ll welcome the new moon with a rosh chodesh Meditation on Illuminating the Light Within, featuring meditation specialist Adrian Hovard. Both events highlight the AJCC’s commitment to providing you services that enhance your soundness of mind, body, and soul. If you’d like to join us for either event, please contact Shlomit Jackson at (562) 426-7601 x1067. I look forward to seeing you at these exciting upcoming happenings at the J this summer—I hope you’ll attend more than one! Here at the J, we’re all grateful for your support and involvement. Your participation is what makes our community so diverse and special—and what ensures that Your Center for Life will be here for many years to come.

As with our physical health, most of us experience periods of feeling well emotionally. For one person it may mean feeling happy and content in their personal life, while for another it may mean feeling a sense of satisfaction and purpose in their work. be situational such as the grief that comes along with mourning the loss of a loved one, or the stress of moving or starting a new job. The grief will lessen over time and the stress will dissipate and become more manageable as we adjust to the new situation. Other people will deal with a more chronic issue like anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder that requires longer term treatment over the course of their life. Unfortunately, there is still a stigma around seeking help for our emotional and mental
health. I often have people ask me in a low whisper how they go about seeking counseling services, or they may send an email because they are afraid to pick up the phone and call. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and I challenge each of you to do your part to reduce the stigma by having a conversation with someone about mental health, posting information about mental health awareness on social media, or simply taking the time to read about it and learn more.

Shabbat Soirée Ends Our Year Strong!
Students, community members, and lay leaders were present at last year’s Beach Hillel Shabbat Soiree.
At the end of each and every academic year, Beach Hillel and our entire campus community come together for a Shabbat Soirée. This year’s fancy evening affair will be on May 4th. On this night, students, staff, faculty, parents and lay leaders join together in highlighting a year full of substantive programming and meaningful relationship building. While all of our students are important members of Beach Hillel, we look forward to celebrating the successes of the student leaders and interns that have supported the work of our dedicated staff throughout the year. We see their leadership as vital to the Jewish culture on campus and continued impact of Beach
Hillel on Jewish students. Our graduating seniors will especially enjoy this night as they are honored for the years they have dedicated to Beach Hillel and the lasting impact they have made on our campus family. To wrap up this experience, we honor the staff members who are leaving our family after a long year of supporting our students and provide exceptional programming. Shabbat Soiree starts at 6:30pm at the Alpert Hillel House and, per usual, we expect one of our largest crowds of the year. If you are interested in sponsoring Shabbat Soirée, please contact our Executive Director, Rachel Kaplan, at Rachel@ BeachHillel.org jewishlongbeach.org | MAY 2018 |

Challenge Your Kids: Enhanced & Accelerated Learning Opportunities
Students get to explore the principles of electricity, building mechanical robots, and engineering bridges as part of a program at Hebrew Academy. These highly-specialized science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) projects are part of a new program at the school. This new Enhanced and Accelerated Learning Opportunities (EALO) program is available for students in grades K-8
to engage in advanced academic research in math and reading. EALO is designed to meet the needs of those students who are capable and motivated to work independently and show a desire to go above and beyond the regular classroom curriculum. Learning is hands-on and inquiry-based in our EALO program. Students showcase their learning in a variety of digital formats, including Powerpoint, iMovie, and 3D
CAD software. Encouraging students to work together to solve real world problems, such as water conservation, food production, and renewable energy sources are some of the activities that take place at Hebrew Academy Orange County. This is a standard form of learning in what is known as ProjectBased Learning (PBL). Specially-designed projects cultivate critical and innovative thinking. With PBL, students work independently or in small groups to actively explore advanced academic concepts using 21st century learning skills. These strategies deepen conceptual understanding, cultivate curiosity, and drive passion for lifelong learning. For more information about our program please contact Nelli Greenspan at Nelli@hacds.org
Preschoolers Celebrate Israel’s 70th!
Surrounded by a boisterous atmosphere in a room festooned with blue and white balloons and other decorations, students at Hebrew Academy Orange County celebrated Israel. This joyous celebration, which involved more than 300 students and faculty at the Norton and Sylvia Alevy Campus, took place on Yom Ha’Atzma’ut, the 70th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel. Led by the high school girls, there were over a half-dozen stations set up where the
high school students shared information about seven cities and regions in Israel with the elementary school students. At each station, there were facts and fun activities, which connected the students to Israel and its people, to help them learn about its culture and uniqueness. The students who participated in the event walked away with goodie bags of treasures, as well as were filled with knowledge and information about Israel. The activities took place in the center of the multi-purpose room, where a huge map of

the State of Israel laid in the middle of the room, helping students visualize the land’s geography and significant points of interest. The map was constructed by the art teacher with the high school and middle school students. Hebrew Academy has always included Israel studies as part of the Jewish studies curriculum, to help strengthen future generations’ relationship with the Jewish state. Learning about Israel starts even with the preschool. This year’s activities for the preschool students on Yom Ha’Atzma’ut featured digging and excavation to learn about archaeology in Israel, as well as writing notes and placing them in a miniKotel, singing Hebrew songs, and face-painting.
