Long Beach Jewish Cultural Arts Festival By Susan Paletz, Alpert JCC Program Director

he Alpert Jewish Community Center will once again play host to the Long Beach Jewish Cultural Arts Festival, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County, Beach Hillel, Jewish Family & Children’s Service and the Jewish Studies Department of Cal State University Long Beach. Join us for Festival 2011 as the AJCC becomes a cultural arts haven featuring the best in Jewish film, books and visual arts. The Festival will run from Monday, November 14 - Sunday, November 20. Rosecarrie Brooks the film festival chair, along with Al Rudis, film selection chair and the committee have selected films from Israel, USA and France; the films are a unique blend of drama, comedy and documentaries that show the complexities of Jewish life around the globe. This year’s Festival is dedicated to the memory of Jean Blakey, a former film festival committee member, patron of the arts, and giving and generous supporter of the Long Beach Jewish community. Opening Night, Thursday, November 17 we present “My So-Called Enemy”. In July 2002, 22 Palestinian and Israeli teenage girls traveled to the United States to participate in a women’s leadership program called Building Bridges for Peace. “My So-Called Enemy” is about 6 of the girls and how knowing their “enemies” as human beings complicates the next 7 years of their lives. Lisa Gossels, the film’s director/producer says “the experience of making this film has transformed her life”. “The Human Resources Manager” is our selection for Saturday night. A Human Resources manager at Israel's largest bakery finds himself the unlikely chaperone of the body of a young Romanian woman in this touching tragiccomedy. The result is a quirky, transnational road trip. Eccentric characters like The Israeli Consul and her husband, The Vice Consul, help the Human Resources manager along the way. Eran Riklis, the acclaimed director of The Lemon Tree and The Syrian Bride, brings a poignant and personal approach to the story. Sunday morning features the documentary, “My Architect”. The film is the story of Nathaniel Kahn’s engrossing

search for his father, Louis Kahn, one of the most celebrated architects of the 20th century, died in 1974 and left behind a highly compartmentalized life, including two children born out of wedlock to two mistresses. Included in his search are visits to the buildings that his father made, such as the grand Salk Institute and the government complex in Bangladesh, a soaring achievement and fascinating paradox- a Muslim capital designed by a Jewish man. “La Rafle” is our selection for Sunday afternoon. This French film is the story of Hitler’s plan for the French government to round up its Jews and put them on trains for the extermination camps in the East. From the Velodrome d’Hiver, where 13,000 people rounded up were held, to the camp of Beaune-LaRolande, “La Rafle” follows the destinies of the victims and their executioners. Closing out Festival 2011, is the showing of “The Matchmaker”. Set in Haifa in the summer of 1968, “The Matchmaker” is a tender story of love, loss and survival in the aftermath of the Second World War. Director Avi Nesher presents a fascinating juncture in Israeli history, where a new society is still reeling from the memory of trauma and the upheaval of the sexual revolution of the sixties. The film is an enchanting coming of age story about friendship and love.

INSIDE THE CHRONICLE

The Jewish Community

Nurturing Jewish Teens and Young Adults From the Director Deborah K. Goldfarb

The Federation 2012 Annual Campaign kicked off in October with our first Opening Night event. Nearly 150 people gathered for food, music and entertainment at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on October 16. Most importantly, the attendees heard stories of the impact of the annual campaign. Throughout the year we will continue featuring stories in the Chronicle and in our e-mails about those who are touched by our work. One example is Anya. When Anya went to summer camp in Suarvas, Hungary for the first time at age 17, she was shocked to find out that all of her camp mates were Jewish. At first she felt oddly out of place as they danced, sang and reveled in Kabbalat Shabbat festivities. A new world opened to her when she began to realize that many of her new friends, like her, came from Jewish heritage, but

had never been directly exposed to Jewish practice. Each year, 8,000 teens and children from over 25 countries spend time at summer camps in Hungary, and in the former Soviet Union. Sadly, another 4,000 are waiting to go to camp, but can't, due to lack of Suarvas Family Camp Anya is now a camp director at the funding. Besides the excitement of connecting with our history in Eretz Israel, and seeing first hand the good that we, as women, do in Israel, Heart to Heart creates a family linked by tradition and tzedakah. We may all live miles and miles apart, but in Israel, we’re all family. Please join our family of women for this fun-filled and moving experience.” Information Sessions will be at the Alpert JCC on Tuesday,

Jean Blakey……Forever in our Hearts Mere words can never express the depth of the loss of Jean Blakey to our community, her family and those of us fortunate enough to have called her “friend”. Jean was an amazing person and gave so much to the people and the community that she loved. “Do not separate yourself from the community. Do not solely believe in yourself” this quote from Ethics of our Fathers exemplifies the way Jean lived her life. In her personal, professional and communal roles, Jean led selflessly by example and was always there to guide, help and get others to help. Over the last 52 years, she has served as a chairwoman or member of countless committees and boards. Some highlights of her leadership roles include: Temple Beth David Sisterhood-President; Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS)-President; & Vice President, Jewish Federation-President, Vice President for Campaign &

Secretary; California State University Long Beach (CSULB) Jewish Studies Board-Chair; Jewish Community Foundation-Secretary.

Jean was the recipient of many prestigious awards including the National Conference for Community & Justice (now Cali-

The Blessing of the Mess Rabbi Abba Perelmuter

Over the summer I learned a very important lesson from my grandchildren. After weeks of visitors and home construction, my mood was very precarious. One afternoon I returned home from work and found wet bathing suits on the couch, discarded socks and shoes around the living room, and dripping melted ice cream on the table. For a few moments I was overcome by the mess that I found. I started getting upset and worked up about what I was witnessing. I stopped mid-thought as I realized that this mess was actually the biggest blessing in my life. Would I trade this mess for any-

thing in the world? Having my grandchildren running around the house and making noise and trouble is the most beautiful thing. I love every second of it. Yes, there are times that I wish it would be a decibel quieter, or that my pants wouldn’t get stuck to the chair when I sat down, but how dare I complain about these minor things. The messes we have in our lives are our greatest blessings. We need to start recognizing this instead of complaining and being miserable about them. This does not only apply to physical messes but to spiritual and emotional ones too. Everything that Hashem

throws at us is an opportunity to improve our character and a chance to be positive and happy. We all understand that life is full of challenges and unfulfilled dreams. Many of us will not accomplish that which we set out do to when we were young. And frustration is the natural outcome of these circumstances. Nevertheless, we must always keep in mind one of the most important teachings of the Baal Shem Tov: Sadness is not a sin but where sadness can lead you no sin can, and joy is not a Mitzvah but where joy can lead you no mitzvah can. Complaining and being bitter about your situation is useless.

We need to decide that what we have Rabbi Abba in our lives is Perelmuter a actually blessing. Instead of seeing empty candy wrappers, diapers, and wet bathing suits, I choose to see flowers, diamonds, and gems. So when you are taking inventory of your life are you left with a blessing or a mess? Or perhaps a little of both? The choice is yours. Rabbi Perelmuter is Rabbi at Shul by the Shore in Long Beach.

JFCS Call Today! We’re Here to Help!

JFCS Receives Grant and Recognition

So I Have Retired, Now What? Ah, the Golden Years. The day we have all been waiting for, the day we can retire. We are supposed to be happy and excited right? While some people take to retirement like a duck to water, others of us have a great deal of trouble making the transition to our new lifestyle. The kids aren’t as interested in seeing us as we imagined, the golf games are fun but aren’t really something we really need to do every day. In short, many of us greatly overestimate our need to retire and underestimate our need to be significant. If you find yourself struggling with these issues, you can keep a few things in mind: • Do not make the mistake of underestimating the emotional adjustment. Your partner, your children, your income, your social networks, where you live and how you spend your time might all be changing. So be patient with yourself as you figure it out. • Be sure to consider when making your plans to envisioning yourself doing something that is meaningful. It should make you happy. It should make you feel as if you're making a contribution. And whatever you do, don't let your age be the limiting factor. Think about all the people who made their most significant impact in the world after turning 60. • Be sure to stay active and not sedentary. While we all enjoy the freedom of relaxing, it isn’t good for our physical or emotional health to not be physically active. Taking a walk, take a dance class, ride your bike, lift weights, take a tai chi class or work in your garden. All are easy things you can do to stay active. • Rediscover old passions and projects that you might have

long ago abandoned. Old dreams can come true! • Keep connected and social. Join groups and reach out to friends, both old and new to keep vibrant and healthy. Now is a good time to reconnect with those people significant in our lives we might not have had time for when we were working. • Remember to bring the wealth of your talent and experience back to the world and consider volunteering at a nonprofit agency. The world needs your help and you will feel better about yourself when you know you are making a difference in other’s lives. Your own community needs you, even if all you do is drive another older adult to the center. If you do find yourself struggling with the transition to retirement and want to talk to someone about it, feel free to call JFCS and our counselors can help you develop your next stage life plans or process all the feelings you might have around retirement. Also, there are plenty of senior programs at the center you might consider. Even better, consider volunteering to help others. As Booker T. Washington said, “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.” JFCS welcomes your talents and if you are willing to drive, the Elbow to Elbow program is actively seeking volunteers to help older adults with transportation to the center.

On September 15, JFCS was proud to attend a grantee recognition breakfast in honor of being chosen one of Kaiser Permanente South Bay’s 2011 grant recipients. JFCS received a grant for $10,000 to support critical and much needed programming for men and for older adults. The guest speaker for the event was Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal who graciously presented JFCS with a Certificate of Recognition from the California Legislature. The Assemblymember, who has been a long-term advocate for mental health care and is a licensed mental health professional, outlined two pieces of legislation she hopes will have long-lasting and positive effects on our understanding and treatment of mental health issues. The

first is to introduce a mental health curriculum to grades 7-12 so that children have an awareness of suicide prevention and other mental illness issues at an early age. The second is to develop an advanced health care directive for mental health issues. This legislation would allow added safety and protection for persons with cyclical mental illness or progressive mental illness. For example, someone who is bipolar could authorize treatment for periods when they are lower functioning or suicidal. Alternately, someone with progressive alzheimer’s could rest assured they would remain safe even as their disease progresses. We wish the Assembly member the best of luck in advancing her mental health legislation.

For counseling or more information about volunteering at JFCS call Lise at EXT. 235. To volunteer with RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) or to help with the Elbow to Elbow program, contact Chris Palzer from the AlpertJCC at 562506-2801. Elbow to Elbow is a wonderful program which is part of the Active Adult Community Connection Project generously sponsored by the Archstone Foundation.

Spotlight on Birthright Over the summer, ten Beach Hillel students were thrilled to participate in a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. Each month, one student will share the highlights from his or her experience. Rachele Friedland explains why Taglit-Birthright Israel was so influential for her. What started as a free trip abroad changed quickly. I realized this upon meeting my new friend Gil on our fight to Israel. We instantly connected over satirical conversations and I had a good feeling that these next 10 days would be something else. Of course, my suspicious were right. I had decided to embark on Taglit-Birthright Israel because of my grandfather, who lived in Jerusalem. I was so overwhelmed with the opportunity to stay in Jerusalem for five days and see the entire country. Although the trip was shorter than I would have liked, I enjoyed everything we were able to

see. From hikes and “nature walks” to visiting some of the oldest cities, Taglit-Birthright Israel provided a once in a lifetime opportunity that I’ve already encouraged others to take. I was able to discover my self, my spirituality, and my role as a Jewish woman in America during my amazing journey. While I cannot say I’ve come up with some profound answer to all that I questioned while on that trip, I’m glad I was challenged to scratch the surface.

Southern California Hillel’s Train Students to Increase Engagement Students from several Southern California colleges and universities came together September 9-11 for the Southern California CSU Hillel Engagement Retreat, the first event of its kind in the area to teach students the art of building stronger relationships and advancing Jewish journeys. Hosted by CSUN Hillel and Hillel of Long Beach and West Orange County, the conference taught nearly 20 students peer-engagement methodologies used by Hillel’s around the globe to engage their peers and help them grow as Jews. The participants came from CSU Northridge, Long Beach, Fullerton and San Marcos as well as San Diego State University and Los Angeles Valley College. The conference was made possible by a grant from the Jewish Federation Valley Alliance. "The skills that the facilitators brought with them will really help our students develop meaningful Jewish student experiences for their fellow students on campus as well as recognizing their own Jewish journeys," said Rachel Kaplan, director of Hillel of Long Beach and West Orange County. "Seeing how our work fits into the broader scope of the Jewish future helps to motivate our students to continue their important work." "Talented and passionate Jewish students are themselves the greatest asset we have to reach and engage their Jewish peers," said Graham Hoffman, Associate Vice President of Strategy with Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, who led several sessions over the weekend. "Preparing them with the skills, impetus, and support to develop and expand their social networks, building relationships with uninvolved Jewish

peers and connecting them to Jewish life are among the most successful ways we can broaden and expand the reach and impact of Jewish life on campus." "I felt like I became very aware of resources available to me as an intern," said Marysa Miller, a student at California State University, Long Beach. "I was also able to learn about resources that should be available to Jewish students, in general, and how Hillel plays a role in that for students on campus. I think that being able to meet students from other Cal States was able to help me a lot in just being able to talk with other students who have been involved in other ways that I have and to bring awareness

to issues that we all face." “Helping students learn to create relationships with one another is particularly important and challenging among Cal State Universities, since these are commuter schools in which social and extracurricular activities compete with schoolwork, home life and jobs,” explains Rabbi Drew Kaplan of Southern California Jewish Student Services, who helped organized the event and provided the Jewish content of the weekend. The training took place at Camp Max Straus in Glendale and included sessions on goal-setting, program & initiative training, and exploring one's Jewish journey.

Jewish Lecture Series The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is pleased to welcome back to Long Beach the nationally syndicated political columnist, Harold Meyerson. Mr. Meyerson will speak at the Alpert JCC on Monday, November 28, at 7:30 pm, and his talk will examine the upcoming presidential and congressional elections. In 2009, the Atlantic Monthly named him one of “the most in-

fluential commentators in the nation.” The lecture series is free and open Harold Meyerson to the community. For more information, please contact Susan Paletz at the Alpert JCC at 562-426-7601, EXT. 1067.

Values Carved in Stone

News from the Preschool

Integrating our five core values in all that we do and everything we see has been a labor of love for administrators and contractors at The Hebrew Academy this summer. Through tremendous efforts from parents, community members, staff members and supporters around the world, we were able to win one-half of a million dollars for our little school. More than 125,000 people voted for us, a school with under 300 students, through a Facebook contest that Kohl’s ran last fall. I guess you could call us, “The Little SCHOOL that could.” So, now we are able to tangibly see the fruits of our labor in our beautiful new Values Circle. The Circle is a place where our values are carved in stone and circle our beautiful grass amphitheater and flagstone stages. Our five core values are: Respect – Be Respectful, Truth – Be Truthful, Courtesy – Be Courteous, Kindness – Be Kind, Gratitude – Be Thankful.

“We are now in our 8th week of school and I cannot remember a calmer opening of preschool than this year’s opening,” says Preschool Director Chanie Perlemuter. “We've started the year with 63 children, with more joining as the year progresses. Our new toddler playground is almost done; the glider and mural will be in by the end of the month. We welcome three new staff members: Suzzette Natan - Toddler Class, Claudia Ortega - Toddler Class in the morning and Nursery in the afternoon, Miri Lasarescu with Morah Sarah - Pre-k in the morning and with Teacher Tracy in the afternoon.” Mommy & Me session begins on Thursday, Nov. 3, 9:30 - 11:00 am. Please join us for Challah baking, songs, music, art and much more. Bring your friends. We use our Values Circle often, and we hope to bring community members in to take advantage of this beautiful gathering place as well. Two of the main assemblies that occur in our Values Circle are Town Hall Meetings and Rosh Chodesh Assemblies. During the Town Hall Meetings, our entire student body (K – 12), gathers to discuss school events, honor successes and solve problems. These meetings are facilitated by the Student Council. The Rosh Chodesh Assemblies are focused on elementary students. Rabbi Popack and Dr. Carlson honor students who have shown that they are Menches that they have tried hard and succeeded in school and at home, and who have instilled the core values in their daily lives. We have much more we want to achieve on campus and within
