Opening Night Honors Jay Leff: A Long Beach Original By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development
This year’s Opening Night event will honor the contributions of Jay Leff, who has tirelessly devoted his life to the betterment of our local Jewish Community.
Celebrating Jay Leff On Opening Night, our community comes together to kick-off the Jewish Federation Annual Community Campaign which benefits our entire community. As part of the celebration, we will also be honoring Jerome “Jay” Leff, someone who has been an integral part of our community and has given his time and talents to make our Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus a home for all. Jay made his debut on April 24, 1924 at Seaside Hospital (which is now Memorial). It is rare to find someone whose Long Beach roots go back that far. The Jewish community was very small then. There was a Jewish Community Building at Anaheim and Magnolia streets, in which both the Reform and Conservative synagogues shared space, and Jay’s parents actually met at that center in 1921. Active in the Young Couple’s group at the old Jewish Community Building, Jay and his wife Laura were asked to chair a dinner/dance for the Jewish Welfare Fund and that is how he got his start volunteering with the Jewish Community. In 1960, when the community built what we now refer to as “the old JCC,” Jay started the Art Committee with director Gerry Bubis. Since that time forth, he has stayed with the Art Committee which is responsible for choosing and hanging all of the art exhibits that you now see in the Gatov Gallery in the Lentzner Family Promenade. In addition, Jay has served on the Alpert Jewish Community Center board and received the JCC President’s Founder Award in 1997 and the Hineni Award in 1999. Jay also served on the Jewish Family & Children’s Service board and was active on committees with the Federation. In the general community, Jay has served on the boards of the Long Beach Cancer Society, the Long Beach Symphony, the Long Beach Opera, and was President of the Long Beach Arts Council.
Jay had a successful career as a commercial interior designer and has worked on offices, hospitals and many hotels around the world, including the Four Seasons in New York and the David’s Citadel in Jerusalem. Knowing the importance of having a beautiful building for the community, Jay volunteered to join the original “New Campus” Construction Committee and worked with Linda Gordon and others to work on the interior design. He is very proud of the building and stated, “I was interested in the esthetic of our community building. It is important to have an atmosphere that is welcoming. I also believe it is important that we continue to invest in this campus for all to use and have the resources to continue to keep the campus looking good.” Jay remarked that L’Dor v’Dor has been his inspiration and his children and some of his grandchildren grew up at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. He recently supported the Falk Family Playground Refurbishment and feels it is important to pass on the love of community. Jay has two children: Karin (Polacheck) and Randy; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is proud to have spent the last 18 years with his significant other, Esther Albert. Opening Night Film Join your local Jewish Community at this year’s Opening Night reception, followed by this year’s featured film Dough. There will be a reception with desserts, coffee, and an espresso bar in the Lentzner Family Promenade and the Leon & Barbara Shoag Rotunda, which will begin at 6:00 pm, hosted by the Jewish Federation and generously sponsored by Gelson’s. The film screening will begin at 7:00 pm in the Amy & Richard Lipeles Family Auditorium. Tickets are free with a pledge to Federation’s 2017/5777 Annual Community Campaign. In addition, with your 2017 pledge, you may purchase a discounted Film Festival Pass for only $35. To RSVP, please contact Amy Levenstein-Pulido at events@jewishlongbeach.org or (562) 426-7601 ext. 1417. “You don’t have to be baked to make some dough” is the tagline of this year’s chosen Opening Night film Dough. Jonathan Pryce of HBO’s popular “Game of Thrones” series, plays a struggling baker who owns a Kosher bakery located on London’s East Side. Finding himself overworked and understaffed, Pryce’s character reluctantly takes in an apprentice who has a side marijuana selling gig to make ends meet for both himself and his immigrant mother. An accident with the dough one day leads to the bakery having challah flying off the shelves and an unlikely friendship forms between the two characters. Dough will have you falling off your chairs and rolling on the floor laughing, as it touches your hearts.

Long Beach Jewish Film Festival The Long Beach Jewish Film Festival is cosponsored by the Alpert Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation, the Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Long Beach Hillel, and CSULB Jewish Studies Department. In addition to Opening Night, the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival will be screening four other Jewish-themed films from around the world. Sabena Hijacking - My Version, Thurs, 11/10, 7:30 pm Newly-discovered audio recordings of the plane’s pilot, added to the video testimony of others directly involved- including Benjamin Netanyahu, Ehud Barak, and a surviving woman hijacker- make this retelling of the Sabena hijacking gripping and authentic. Atomic Falafel, Sat, 11/12, 7:30 pm It’s Dr. Strangelove updated as bureaucrats in Iran and Israel are poised to wipe each other off the map. Can two cross-cultural teenage Internet girlfriends, a young hacker with a powerful worm, the falafel queen of the desert, and a German with a strange allergy somehow prevent nuclear disaster? Rosenwald, Sun, 11/13, 10:00 am It’s the South before the civil rights era, and the schools are segregated. But Tzedekah from the man who turned Sears Roebuck into an empire is making a difference that will be felt for generations. Firebirds, Sun, 11/13, 2:00 pm Burnt-out detectives work in Israel, too! This one is swept up in a moody murder mystery involving survivors and an aging gigolo. Long Beach Jewish Film Festival individual tickets or the Film Festival Pass are available at the P.E. desk at the AJCC or at registration on Opening Night. For more information, visit alpertjcc.org/adults/jewish-film-festival. To become a Film Festival Patron, please contact Susan Paletz at spaletz@alpertjcc.org or (562) 426-7601 ext. 1012. I Like to Cook
R E F L E C T I O N S
By Rabbi Nancy Myers
I purchased some nice bright orange sugar pie pumpkins. I sliced them in half and scooped out Rabbi Nancy the pumpkin’s Myers seeds to reserve for roasting later on. As the pumpkin baked in the oven, I kneaded flour into cold chunks of butter with my fingertips until I have dough. The pie crust chills in the fridge. Within a couple of hours, I puree the roasted pumpkin with cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, eggs, and brown sugar and fill my flaky crust with it. As it bakes in the oven, the spices fill the kitchen and house. Later, it becomes my perfect pumpkin pie. Even though I’m quite busy being a congregational rabbi and mom, I still take time to cook. I like chopping onions,
garlic, and kale, mixing flour, almond meal, and sugar, and creating fantastic dinners for my family and friends. It is soothing and very gratifying. I find myself feeling lucky that I can obtain juicy kosher chicken, fresh rainbow chard, and varied ingredients to tantalize my taste buds. How lucky I am. How lucky are all of us. This month is the holiday of Thanksgiving. We give thanks for the harvest, for the pilgrims finding their way to America, for our luck in being born in a country of relative safety, security, and opportunity. Gratitude is also an inherent Jewish value. Taking time to count our blessings, appreciate what we have, is essential to true spirituality. Our liturgy reminds us to be grateful to God. Our holidays celebrate the gift of our survival. And of course, we are always grateful for food.
My grandmother, I called Graful, because as a young child I combined her first name Ethel with ‘grandma’, told me stories of her mother. Rachel was born in the late 1800’s in Poland and suffered cold and fierce hunger. Rachel would often go to bed without any dinner because there was no food in the house. Sometimes, her mother would collect a few coins owed to her father and procure some stale bread. Rachel would be awakened from sleep, so she could have a slice of bread and glass of watered down milk. Rachel and her siblings scoured the country side for berries in summer and hoped for a better life in America. Here I am. The great granddaughter of people who left Eastern Europe hoping that their children and grandchildren wouldn’t go to bed hungry. Not
only do I not go hungry, I cook and bake with the passion of a gourmet chef. I feel so lucky that my ancestors were willing and able to leave all that they knew for a better future. I am thankful to God that I am alive and have two wonderful children. I am grateful for the easy winters in Southern California and the incredible beauty of the ocean, mountains, and desert. I am grateful to be living in the United States. A place where I could go to college and become a rabbi. In the Talmud, Ben Zoma in Berakhot looks upon a crowd on the steps of the Temple Mount. “Blessed be God!” He exclaims. “Adam had to go through so many labors just to eat. He ploughed, sowed, reaped, threshed, winnowed, ground, and then sifted flour just so he could have bread. If Adam wanted to wear clothing, he
had to shear, wash wool, comb, spin, and weave it. I, on the other hand, rise in the morning and find all these before me.” How lucky we are to have shelter, clothing, and ample food. This Thanksgiving as we bite into juicy Turkey, savory mashed potatoes, and sweet pumpkin pie, may we take time to count our blessings in America. We can live as proud Jews. We can work, study, and live freely. Thank you God for all that you have given us. I think it’s time to enjoy a slice of pie.

For over 16 years, the leaders of our community have convened four times a year as a body called the Kehillah Leadership Council. Convened by the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County, the mission of Kehillah (which means community) is to build a sense of community, identify synergistic opportunities, and address shared issues and concerns of our community. This council is comprised of both agency and synagogue professionals, clergy, and lay leaders. A few of the programs that were incubated at Kehillah were the Community Purim Carnival, Friends Feeding Friends, and the “Rabbinic Reflections” column in the Chronicle. Under the chairmanship of Rabbi Howard Laibson, we continue to work together on community-wide programs and festivals. A few of the

National Family Caregivers Month November is National Family Caregivers Month, and it reminds us that it is so important for caregivers to take care of themselves first. Caregiving can be profoundly rewarding, but also difficult and stressful for the physical and emotional demands it places on the caregiver. Many of our counseling clients come to us with issues surrounding their roles as caregivers for a friend or loved one. The weight of responsibility for a human being who is not able to live without another’s help can be overwhelming, resulting in anxiety. So often, those who are caregivers can become depressed, because they have heightened awareness of their own humanity and concerns that they may fall short of expectations, whether real or imagined. Self-care is of prime importance in the life of one
who cares for a loved one. It is paramount to call “time out” and step away from the caregiver role, if only for a short time. Not doing so can lead to deterioration of the caregiver’s physical and mental health. In addition to counseling services, JFCS’ Older Adult Services team is here to help caregivers with a wide range of services. They can make regularly scheduled visits to provide ongoing assessment and guidance to caregivers, and they are a wealth of information when it comes to resources and services to meet the needs of the loved one. They can help caregivers navigate the Medicare and Social Security systems, provide money management, and arrange for a friendly visitor to come and spend time with the caregiver’s loved one. I am grateful for the tremendous community partners we have with the Federation, JFCS, Hillel, The Hebrew Academy, and all the community synagogues and agencies, for together we strengthen our community and make it a truly special place to live. I am grateful for all of our community leaders and donors who make what we do possible. I am grateful for the wonderfully diverse membership that fills our building with laughter, love, and friendship. I am grateful for my incredible family, who give me strength, support, love, and so much joy! I am grateful to be able to work for an organization that I truly love, that is so deeply part of who I am, and that I can honestly call my home. I am grateful that with all that is happening around the country and world, that the Alpert JCC is truly an oasis where everyone is special and is welcomed warmly into our community. I am grateful that the Alpert JCC is a neighborhood and gathering place that is guided by Jewish values and ideals and is open to all! I am grateful for all of the above, for with all of the pieces working together, we create what the JCC is all about: a strong, thriving community filled with activity, compassion, health, growth, education, and a sense of belonging. I hope that as you reflect on what you are grateful for this year, you include the Alpert Jewish Community Center, a vibrant place which will always be for you, as it is for me, Your Center For Life.

Susan Mathieu
Senior Adult Coordinator
When Susan Mathieu was a teenager, her family came to the JCC pool every day. She loved growing up here at the J, and she participated in the teen programs, including camp and Summer Stock (she was in Bye Bye Birdie where she had one line!). In those days, the teens had a senate which trained them for leadership roles in the community. “The senate program was my foundation for leadership. I was also a camp counselor for five summers when we had the resident camp, Camp Kadimah. There was a program called CLEW, (Center Leadership Educational Workshop) where they taught the teens to be leaders. We traveled to different Jewish centers throughout the southwest and stayed in people’s homes, and they would come here and stay with us. It was a great exchange program. “I believe that as a professor at CSU Long Beach, I used many of the techniques and tenets of leadership that I learned here in all these programs. My sons Daniel and Joseph both went to camp here, and I was thrilled when Daniel joined the AJCC Board of Directors last year. The continuity is great. In fact, many of the friendships I made here as a teenager, I still have as my friends.” Susan went to CSULB for her BA in Recreation Administration and her MS in Recreational Therapy. After she graduated, she worked at a Family Counseling Center for children who had been abused. “Then I was recruited to teach a class, and at that point I returned to school for my doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of La Verne. I taught at Cal State Long Beach and CSU Dominguez Hills for 17 years. “When I retired from CSULB in May of 2009, a friend told me there was an opening in the Senior Adult department at the J, and I was lucky enough to get the position I began working in June.” When Susan began, it was a very small program and only about 15 -20 people came to lunch. “Working with Susan Paletz,” Susan explains, “we have been very successful in building the program. We average about 60-75 people weekly now. And for our special events, such as New Year’s Eve or the Fourth of July, we will sometimes have 200 adults! “One of my favorite programs is the Happiness & Humor Group that meets the first Friday of every month. It’s really popular, and we have people from all over the Greater Long Beach area attend. Sometimes we’ve had as many as 70 participants. The Seniors come and they make friends and many people leave going out to lunch and making play dates. It’s fantastic. “I feel so fortunate in my position to feel free to take risks with new programs. Jeffrey Rips and Susan Paletz encourage me to go where my vision takes me. And I have a great adult team with Shlomit Jackson and Ronnie Levine. They have made it possible for me to expand the program a little more each year. When Jeffrey comes into my programs, I love introducing him to my participants and letting them know that I couldn’t do what I do without the support of Jeffrey and the Board of Directors. The AJCC has had such a profound influence on me. It has given me my foundation for life, for being a part of a community, for being kind, and for advocacy.” Susan is thrilled to announce that a new book Facilitation Techniques used in Therapeutic Recreation, in which she has a chapter on Therapeutic Humor, has just been released. Susan is affiliated with Congregation Ner Tamid in Palos Verdes and she volunteers there leading caregiver support groups. She is married with two sons and lives in Seal Beach. - Interview by Erika Hillinger

Nancy McLain
Veterans’ Day Camp at the AJCC!
Awarded Stanley V. Goldin Senior of the Year Award
Nancy McLain first came to the AJCC three years ago and has become invaluable to just about every department. Her hard work and dedication earned her this year’s Stanley V. Goldin Senior of the Year award at the AJCC Annual Meeting. Nancy grew up in Long Beach, went to CSULB for a degree in Physical Therapy, “and then I lived and worked in the San Fernando Valley for a good while. I then lived and worked in the Central California Mountains for 20 years before moving to Northern Virginia in 1998. I came home to Long Beach to retire in November 2013. I discovered the JCC in March of 2014 while I was looking for a Tai Chi class and found not only the perfect class, but the place I wanted to spend my time. I don’t go anywhere else. The Alpert JCC is ‘my center for life.’ “I have made a world of friends here. First I started volunteering for Susan Mathieu in the Senior lunch program. I was still working part time and that was my only available day. Then I met Ronnie Levine and volunteered to help with event registrations for the Jewish Film Festival and other evening programs. One thing led to another. I went to the Women’s Weekend and met a lot more people. I volunteered for the Purim Carnival and met Gayle Ehrenberg and Shlomit Jackson and helped with their programs. When I fully retired in April of 2015, I was able to make myself available to ECE and the Federation as well.” One of the places you will frequently find Nancy is in the AJCC kitchen. As she explains, “I helped in the kitchen with Maureen Lawrence’s drama show last year, and I had never worked in a kitchen before. Now I am in the kitchen all the time! I enjoy helping with the Senior lunches and with Susan’s Happiness & Humor group. I just love all of it.

“The energy of this place is special. I tried other places for my fitness classes, and they don’t have the energy and the positive feel that this place has. I really appreciate the multi-generational attitude and acceptance here. It keeps you young and keeps you strong. You can feel the positive energy as soon as you approach the front door. Nancy is very modest when talking about receiving the Goldin Senior of the Year award: “I was so surprised to receive the recognition because volunteering makes me feel useful. I did not expect to be rewarded for what gives me pleasure anyway. I was very touched.” Dr. Susan Mathieu, Senior Adult Coordinator, works closely with Nancy and adds with heartfelt enthusiasm, “It’s hard for me to imagine my position before Nancy. She anticipates what we need before we even know we need it. And she loves being here as much as we do. She inspires us.” - Interview by Erika Hillinger

Our New Diversity Shabbat Series is a Major Success!
Long Beach Hillel’s students enjoying Persian food & Farsi music at the “Shabbat in Persia” event.
One of Beach Hillel’s focuses this year is on the diversity of cultural expression and togetherness within the Jewish community and the State of Israel. On November 4th, we will host our Inaugural “Shabbat in Persia” event, in partnership with J.I.M.E.N.A., also known as Jews in the Middle East and North Africa. “Shabbat in Persia” is a wonderful opportunity for students in attendance to embrace diverse Jewish cultures. They are able to taste the flavors of Persia and immerse themselves in the sounds of Persia through a beautiful a musical experience. Our students are excited to experience more Diversity Shabbats in addition to the traditional shabbats that are held throughout year
with the support of the local community. Beach Hillel will often revamp Shabbat dinners by providing a unique theme to them, including: “Pink Shabbat” on Valentine’s Day featuring foods that contain aphrodisiacs, a “Rainbow Shabbat” to incorporate the LGBTQ community into Judaism, and an “Israeli Shabbat” that builds a unique experience from abroad. If you’re a community member and would like to contribute to the success of our Shabbat dinners, please contact Long Beach Hillel’s Executive Director, Rachel Kaplan, at Rachel@ BeachHillel.org. The Correlation Between Art and Academic Performance
A preschooler, a second grader, and a high schooler working on their geometric abstractions for an art class assignment.
Studies show that there is a correlation between art and other achievement. A report by Americans for the Arts states
that young participate in regular basis more likely to
people who the arts on a are four times be recognized
for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair, or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate. Each week in The Hebrew Academy’s art room, students of all ages tackle the same visual theme. This week is geometric abstraction. Basic shapes are drawn intersecting each other to create new shapes. An alternating pattern is then applied when coloring. The effect is an optical illusion that dazzles the eye. Next week, students will study the life and work of Sonia Delaunay, the Jewish painter and textile designer. She is famous for her radical use of shape and color and was the
Come to Auction Royale! On Sunday, December 4th, 2016, The Hebrew Academy of Huntington Beach, twice awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award, will be hosting its annual Auction Royale & Dinner fundraiser event. This event is supported entirely through the generosity of individuals and businesses that kindly donate merchandise, gift certificates, services, as well as cash contributions. This historically successful fundraiser is attended by nearly 300 guests each year. It’s a gala evening of fun, “By the Parents for the Parents”, to benefit the school’s buildings and grounds, as well as its stellar educational programs. Proceeds from this event support the school’s financial aid program, enhance classroom technology, expand the liberal arts department, develop the library, and enlarge the sports program. Last year, funds went towards upgrading the lunch
area, in 2014 to upgrade the Library Courtyard, in 2013 to upgrade the school library, and in 2012 to upgrade the kindergarten playground. Over $100,00 was raised for special projects through the auction event. The emphasis of Auction Royale is on socializing—it’s a chance for parents, teachers, alumni, and administrators to get to know each other while enjoying a wonderful live auction, entertainment, cocktails, and a delicious gourmet buffet. It would be an honor if you would come and join The Hebrew Academy on Sunday, December 4th, 2016 at The Centre in Lakewood, CA for our inspiring event. first living female to be given a retrospective at the Louvre. Everyone is capable of making great art, but it helps to have a good coach. At The Hebrew Academy, we’ve made it a priority to give the gift of art to every student. “It is thrilling to see students take on bigger and bigger artistic challenges. The improvements really are astounding,” said art teacher, Erica Wolfsen. According to the report by Americans for the Arts, art education strengthens problem-solving and criticalthinking skills. The experience of making decisions and choices in the course of creating art carries over into other parts of life. “If they are exploring and thinking and experimenting
and trying new ideas, then creativity has a chance to blossom,” says MaryAnn Kohl, an arts educator and author of numerous books about children’s art education. Dr. Kerry Freedman, Head of Art & Design Education at Northern Illinois University reports, “Children need to know more about the world than just what they can learn through text and numbers. Art education teaches students how to interpret, criticize, and use visual information, and how to make choices based on it.” Knowledge about the visual arts, such as graphic symbolism, is key in helping kids become smart consumers and navigate a world filled with marketing logos.

CSULB Jewish Lecture Series
Dr. Marion Kaplan
The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is very pleased to welcome Dr. Marion Kaplan to Long Beach to discuss her research on Jewish refugees in Portugal during the Second World War. The Skirball Professor of Modern
Jewish History at New York University (NYU) and threetime winner of the National Jewish Book Award, her talk will take place at the Alpert Jewish Community Cente on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus (3801 E. Willow Street, Long Beach, CA 90815) on November 7th, at 7:30 pm. Beginning in 1940, tens of thousands of Jewish refugees from all over Europe poured into neutral Portugal. Lisbon especially became a city of transit and intrigue, sheltering not only the refugees and the organizations that provided them aid, but Allied and Axis coalitions, all of whom populated the cafes and public gathering places. Dr. Kaplan’s talk will
examine the lives of these refugees. She will also look at the behaviors of the Portuguese national government circa 1940’s, as well as local governments, civil servants, Portuguese citizens, and Jewish and transnational philanthropies. Dr. Kaplan will also examine how the refugees coped psychologically with their situation, both publicly and privately. Like all CSULB Jewish Studies Program talks, this concert and discussion is free and open to the public. There is no need to reserve a space. For more information on this talk or spring semester events, please send an email to Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger at jeffrey.blutinger@csulb.edu.
