FEATURE STORY

Building Our New Organization for a Bright Tomorrow: Come Dream with Us! Deborah K. Goldfarb Chief Executive Officer, Jewish Federation Jewish Community Foundation

People tell me daily about how much they love our close knit community. For me, the community has been like a child that I have nurtured. Just like a child, the community is changing as it evolves. As our children grow up, we love them, no matter what “difficult” stages they may go through. And the same is true for our community as it continues to grow and evolve. And like children, as we grow up, there are things which need to change as we mature and become stronger in our identities. One year ago the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation embarked upon a formal Reimagining Process to determine how best to ensure the future of our role in the community. In the November 2017 issue, I spoke about the challenges that were leading us in this direction– challenges which Federations nationwide are facing: changing patterns of affiliation, giving and demographics along with mounting costs of maintaining the Weinberg Federation Campus facility. Over our 70 year history, we have raised over $60 million to support Israel, overseas Jewry, local Jewish organizations, and the campus housing the Alpert Jewish Community Center and our agencies. As our role was to act like a community chest. We raised funds each year and distributed them to local and overseas agencies on a proportional basis. In order to better understand our community we recently launched a community survey. If you have not yet filled out the survey, please do so soon (see Page 4). In the initial responses to the survey, many donors told us that they do not understand the concept of our Annual Community Campaign because we are not funding specific issues, but rather, the infrastructure of our various recipients. This makes it difficult to explain our relevancy and impact to modern donors who increasingly want to fund specific needs, and solve specific problems, rather than contribute to one “community chest”. Entering Our Next Chapter As a result of the Reimagining Process, led by Daryl Phillips and Jan Stein, the Boards of the Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation voted in May to merge our separate organizations, in order to create a more efficient organization, and to reduce confusion in the community about our roles. 2

We will be following in the steps of many large Jewish communities across the country that have historically had one organization, rather than a separate Federation and Foundation.

1948 2018

The new organization, effective July 2019, will also be focused on changing how we fundraise, and distribute funds to community organizations. The goals of the combined organizations will be to: • Engage and provide relevancy to our next generation of donors. • Become the convener of community dreams through creative planning & funding. • Provide creative problem solving for challenges the community may face. • Create innovative programs that address the Jewish needs and desires of community members in a changing Jewish milieu. • Increase Jewish philanthropy in the Long Beach area by funding specific needs, and offering donors multiple ways to get involved. • And ultimately, make an impact on the Jewish future of the Long Beach community. Currently we fund approximately between $2.5 and $3 million dollars in programs each year from both the Annual Community Campaign, and from earnings from permanent funds held through the Foundation. This funding breaks down into specific areas including Engaging, Caring, Advocating, and Building. We engage by funding Jewish Education, Leadership Development, and Donor Engagement programs. We demonstrate our donors’ caring for the community by funding programs for Older Adults, Jews in Need, Counseling and Security. We advocate by funding social service programs for needy Jews and immigrants in Israel and around the world. We build by providing annual maintenance funds to the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, and by funding new capital projects, e.g. the recent solar project.

Our Story Continues 1957 Creates a Jewish Family Service Program

Long Beach Jewish Community Council creates a Jewish Family Services program, at the urging of the National Council of Jewish Women and hires Mrs. Joshua Marcus as its first director. Program to be evaluated after 6 months.

As we continue along the path of combining our organizations and retooling our fundraising and fund distribution processes, we plan to more clearly demonstrate our impact in each of these areas, and to develop funding for new programs in each. Please join us as we dream about the next 70 years in our wonderful community. Together we can Engage, Care, Advocate, and Build in order to create a bright Jewish future.

IRA Charitable Rollover By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development

If you’re required to withdraw funds annually from an IRA, making a direct distribution to a charity or establishing a fund at the Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County can be an easy, low-cost, and smart way to allow you to support the causes you care about. How does it work? If you’ve reached the age of 70 ½ by the date of your distribution, you are eligible to make a tax-free* charitable gift of up to $100,000 per year to from your IRA. To make a Qualified Charitable Distribution, (the official term for this gift) please contact the Jewish Federation & Jewish

Community Foundation, and our professional staff can work with your IRA administrator to facilitate your distribution. One of our community members, Rosecarrie Brooks created an endowment fund recently using her IRA distribution. Rosecarrie states, “I have wanted to create an endowment for years, but I could not figure out how to find the money. Needing to make a mandatory distribution annually, now that I have reached that magical age, it makes so much sense to roll over the distribution with no tax consequences. Also, it is almost a hasslefree transaction and the Foundation staff work with you to help you determine the purpose for your fund.

Each year, I can continue to add to this fund with my required distribution and in the future the fund will have more money to distribute to the charities I care about.” What are the benefits? • A Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA is not deductible, but neither is it subject to federal or State income tax. The tax benefit is available both for donors who itemize and those who do not. And because a Qualified Charitable Distribution is not deductible, it does not count against the annual federal ceiling on deductible charitable contributions. • You may count your Qualified Charitable

Distribution toward your minimum distribution requirement for the year. • While you may not place your Qualified Charitable Distribution in a donor advised fund, supporting foundation or private foundation, you may earmark your distribution. Examples include making a current gift to the Annual Community Campaign; or to create a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) or Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE). • Remember, you can also make a legacy gift by naming the Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County

as a beneficiary of your IRA. This allows you to establish a special endowment fund to support a particular field of interest to you in the Jewish community or to support the continuing charitable purposes of one or more Jewish agencies. For more information on making a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA, please contact Sharon Kenigsberg, at 562426-7601, ext. 1008. *This material is presented for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal, tax or financial advice. “A different kind of Holocaust Story... A gripping drama about war refugees haunted by the death of their loved ones— and by memories of the things they had to do to survive.” A Splintered Soul by Long Beach-based playwright Alan L. Brooks, is currently running now until November 4th at International City Theatre in the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. It’s 1947 San Francisco, home to a group of resettled Holocaust survivors from Poland whose very existence depended on blurring the lines between right and wrong. It’s there we meet Rabbi Kroeller and a group of morally starved refugees as they seek to define their existence in this new, tidy post-war America. “The story and the action

are heightened,” says director Marya Mazor. “It’s a parable that asks important questions about immigration, survival and democracy. Are refugees who have survived extreme trauma the lucky ones — or the unlucky ones?” “The play is a metaphor for the events of today,” explains Mr. Brooks. A Splintered Soul will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m., and On Friday, October 5th, 2018, Jewish Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy created and delivered over 100 Sunday at 2:00 p.m., Shabbat meals throughout the Greater Long Beach & West Orange County area to Jews in need. from October 19th to November 4th. Marie Ben-Sabat currently lives in Orange County, California. However, she is originally from Montreal, Canada, and has lived in Toronto and Stockholm, Sweden, as well. She was formally educated at Jewish Day schools and graduated from university with a B.A. in English Literature. Though she has always had a creative streak, she only pursued her artistic side in her late thirties. Her love of painting was actualized later in life, after her children were born. She started off painting walls and naturally progressed to large canvases- on a dare! She is self taught and has a love of vivacious color and a flair for the impact. Marie enjoys integrating all things Jewish, both old and new with a modern pop art twist. Marie’s father was an Israeli pioneer who passed away in 2015. After he passed away, painting became a cathartic outlet for her in dealing with her grief. She would relive his wartime stories through the historical political Zionist portraits she depicted.

Her preferred medium is acrylic paints and spackling paste. She dabbles with oil, spray and shellac, as well. She is also a photography hobbyist, again mostly enamored by her portrait subjects-her children!

RUNWAY Recap Wendy Manasse Wiese RUNWAY Chief Visionary & JFCS Board Member

By the time you read this, it will be November, and RUNWAY: The Real Way will be a pleasant memory as our focus turns to Thanksgiving, family gatherings, and fabulous food. The timing could not be more appropriate for me to thank all of you who participated

by sponsoring, attending, donating, and purchasing New York Experience raffle tickets. Because of you we raised over $68,000 for JFCS and its programs and services. David and I are so grateful that we can underwrite 100% of the event expenses so that JFCS can continue to fulfill its mission—to empower people to make positive life changes through professional, affordable counseling and support services. One of the most meaningful

outcomes of this year’s RUNWAY is the partnership between JFCS and Macy’s Los Cerritos. Thanks to the vision of Rich Leduc, VP Store Manager, Macy’s Los Cerritos has deepened its engagement with JFCS beyond providing the outfits that our models wear as they walk the runway. The store awarded a $5,000 grant to JFCS for its programs, $3,000 in gift cards for JFCS female clients and their families at an incredible in-store event with

their staff and added another $402 to the total through their in-store Round-Up Campaign where customers were asked to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar to help three local charities, of which JFCS was one. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Macy’s Los Cerritos on future projects. This event could not happen without an incredible village to support it. Sincere thanks are in order for the RUNWAY Committee and

the expertise they bring to the event; to Bonnie McCarthy for her insightful commentary as host; to all who worked behind the scenes as dressers, make-up artists, and hair stylists; to the fabulous group of community volunteers and professional models who made the fashions reality for the audience; and to the JFCS staff and board for help beyond what can be described here. We hope to see you on September 19, 2019!

November is National Family Caregivers Month Kathryn Miles

Executive Director, Jewish Family & Children’s Service

November is National Family Caregivers Month and I want to take moment to recognize those of you who have ever been in the challenging role of taking care of a family member or loved one. This is not an easy role to take on and it can put a strain on familial relationships. For some caregivers, they are still working or have young children and are juggling multiple roles. Others find they must leave their job in order to 14

provide full time care since the cost of care can be exorbitant. A staggering number of people in the United States are taking on the role of caregiver for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member or friend. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, more than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care during any given year and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one. This can be hard work, both physically and mentally. Unfortunately, it is quite common for caregivers to experience their own health challenges, and they are

less likely to seek help for themselves than they are for the loved one they are caring for. When a caregiver ends up in a crisis situation, it can be devastating. One of the most important things that you can do as a caregiver is to ensure you are taking care of yourself so that you are able to do your best for your loved one. Here are 10 tips from the Caregivers Action Network that caregivers can follow: 1. Seek support from other caregivers. You’re not alone! 2. Take care of your own health so that you can be strong enough to take care of your loved one.

| JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE | HESHVAN-KISLEV | 5779

3. Accept offers of help and suggest specific things people can do to help you. 4. Learn how to communicate effectively with doctors. 5. Caregiving is hard work so take respite breaks often. 6. Watch out for signs of depression and don’t delay getting professional help when you need it. 7. Be open to new technologies that can help you care for your loved one. 8. Organize medical information so it’s up to date and easy to find. 9. Make sure legal documents are in order. 10. Give yourself credit

for doing the best you can in one of the toughest jobs there is! At JFCS, we have a Caregivers Support Group that meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month (although not on Thanksgiving Day) from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm here at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. It is free of charge and, like all of our programs and services, is open to everyone. If you feel you could benefit from participating, or if you feel depressed or isolated because of your situation, please give us a call at (562) 427-7916. We’re here to help.

Parents continue to tell us at the Hebrew Academy that there is something very special about the Kindergarten program at The Hebrew Academy. Parents, many of whom were once students at our school themselves, feel deeply connected and rooted in

this community. As Miriam, an alum parent said, “It feels great to send my kid to a school that I went to. So many things in education have changed since I was in school, but here I feel like I understand the education they are getting.” At Hebrew Academy,

every decision is based on what’s best for student learning, safety and wellbeing! We are giving families whether current or new to the community, a special opportunity to see for themselves our special programs and campus environment on Thursday,

The Auction Royale FUNraiser Is Coming! Get ready for Sunday, November 18th, 2018, for the Hebrew Academy will host its annual Auction Royale! This year marks the 50th Anniversary Jubilee of the school. Attended by nearly 300 guests each year, the event raises funds to support our always growing programs and facility. In the past the funds were used to construct the Library Courtyard and to resurface soccer fields. Last year, we started the process of purchasing furnishings to reflect 21st Century education. This year we are planning on using the funds raised to complete our new xSTREAM Lab. The xSTREAM Lab will provide opportunities for our students to focus on realworld problem solving with creativity and innovation. By combining Science, 16

Technology, Robotics, Art, Engineering, and Math in a comprehensive hands on learning space, our students are provided a safe environment to explore, learn, collaborate, test, and ultimately succeed. This lab will be central in the school’s quest to provide the best in education and help them become creative leaders and innovators in the years after they leave the walls of the school. Starting with a cocktail and champagne reception, guests will view works of art created by our talented students, unique merchandise, event tickets, gift certificates, weekend getaways, and much more. All items have been donated through the generosity of individuals and businesses in our community. Guests are treated to a

memorable night, complete with celebrity entertainment. Then, after enjoying a delicious five-course kosher meal, the auction gets underway. The excitement of the auction is always our most anticipated part of the event. Bidding comes fast and furious as each item is presented. A luxurious dinner for 12 of your friends at John Wayne’s oceanfront house; a stay at the Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills; box tickets to your favorite team; these are just some examples of what is in store. The fun continues through the night with staff, alumni, and parents all present to celebrate together while supporting the school and community that educates and cares for our children. Resist the Temptation: Stay Involved! By Rabbi Michal Loving

I don’t know about you, but every time the past couple of weeks in which my phone beeps with the latest Rabbi Michal news alert, I Loving hesitate. My heart falls a little bit. Should I even check the screen? Will it depress me, make me wince and get frustrated with the state of the world? My Facebook feed has transformed from feelgood cat pictures and videos of drooling babies, to vitriol on both sides of the political spectrum. Sometimes, it’s too much. I just want to check out, to focus on my own little life, to ignore the bigger picture before it all becomes overwhelming. It’s easier to bury my head in the sand, to help my kids with homework and make dinners and avoid all talk of politics

with friends and relatives who think differently than I do. Part of me longs to disengage, to try and not care about what happens in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. and world capitals, so that I’m not disappointed. But whenever I think like that, I look at the faces of my children. What do I want to leave them as their legacy? And what do I want to teach them about how Jews behave? Deuteronomy 16:20 tells us tzedek, tzedek tirdof: “Justice, justice shall you pursue.” The value of justice is at the core of Judaism. It’s what compels us to engage in tikkun olam, acts that fix our world and give back to our community. It’s what inspires us to care about class and race inequity, about the #metoo movement, about the actions espoused by our political representatives. When we live this value in our

daily lives, when we educate ourselves about what’s going in the world and then try and do something about it, whatever that may be - we are engaging in holy work. This election season, Hillel is running a campaign called MitzVote on all its college campuses. I love this nonpartisan campaign, aimed at college students and millennials. To vote is do a mitzvah, to fulfill the commandment of tzedek, tzedek tirdof and to engage in our civic and Jewish duty. This November 6th, I encourage all of us to go to our polling places. We need to study the ballot, know who and what we are voting for. Then we can say the Shehechiyanu for having reached this season in our lives, and wear our voting sticker with pride. One of my favorite board books is Lawrence and Karen

Kushner’s How Does God Make Things Happen? The answer to the titular question is simple: “How does God make things happen? With little hands and big hands. With young hands and old hands. With your hands.” What a powerful image. With our hands, we can make a difference. With our hands, we can wield a pen, fill in a ballot, and change our country for the better. And when we do, we will be looking outside ourselves. We will teach our children the value of community. And we will truly be partners with God, enacting change in the larger world and continuing the ongoing work of creation. Rabbi Michal Loving lives in Long Beach with her husband and three young sons. She teaches at Temple Israel and serves the greater Long Beach, Los Angeles and Orange County communities.
