Jewish Federation Board President

THAT’S WHY THERE’S The High Holy Days signify a new beginning. They give us a special, sometimes even holy, time to reflect on the past, and to contemplate our future. As your newly installed Jewish Federation President, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. I’ve been thinking about all of the positive things that are happening around us – across our campus and throughout our community. And I’ve also been considering all that there is for us to accomplish together in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Recently, someone asked me how I became Federation’s new President. While we were on the subject, they asked me what makes a good leader. Having been born here in Long Beach, my introduction to the Jewish Community Center (recognized today as the Alpert Jewish Community Center) started during the mid-1950’s with youth programs and activities at our then newly formed Federation and Jewish Community Center. Years later, my wife and I joined Young Leadership, which led to volunteering for committee, program, agency and board positions. Infusing these experiences with my business management experience, I was able to further hone my leadership skills. I worked on developing my practical skills and my people skills. I focused on developing a long term vision based upon a strong value system. And I learned that good leadership can help guide organizations into the future. The Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus But enough about me... Let us talk about the state of our community! The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus serves as a beautiful hub for Jewish life throughout Long Beach and the western part of Orange County. However, even though it’s just 17 years old, there is already a need for updating our facilities and making improvements to our infrastructure. Gaining input from a professional consultant, staff, and lay leaders, the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County has begun to identify community, building, and agency needs and areas for improvement. It’s been a real eye-opening experience for me, and here is what I’ve already learned during this process: Did you know that five agencies share the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus building space? They are: (1) the Jewish Federation, the professional fundraising arm of the community, (2) the Jewish Community Foundation, which provides professional financial management of endowment gifts and legacy

FEDERATION gifts from our donors, (3) the Alpert Jewish Community Center, which serves over 10,000 members, (4) Jewish Family & Children’s Service, which offers professional counseling and support to individuals and families in need, and (5) Long Beach Hillel, which provides our local university students with events & activities and, most importantly, a sense of Jewish identity and community as they pursue their studies. Why Federation? Did you know that when the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County has an annual community-wide fundraising campaign, every one of these vital agencies along with the Hebrew Academy and local synagogues are the beneficiaries? Our Federation’s fundraising events include Opening Night, Super Sunday Phone-a-thon, Legacy of Leadership, and the events staged by the Federation’s Men’s and Women’s Philanthropy divisions. Did you know that monies raised from our annual campaign is allocated to the agencies, synagogues, and even overseas through Federation grants? All of these allocations are made to ensure that our community infrastructure serves us well today, and is positioned to serve us well in the future. Funds are allocated for property management, capital and structural improvements, agency operations and community services, playground and auditorium upkeep and improvements, and our young leadership programs. As our agencies focus their efforts on the important work of creating and implementing the many programs that benefit our children, our seniors, our families, and our community at large, the Jewish Federation will tend to the business of building and infrastructure management, as well as providing necessary funding for our agencies. As we look toward the coming year, here are just some of the exciting developments that are already in work: • In an effort to “green” our buildings and campus, our Campus Operations Committee is working with the Alpert Jewish Community Center and Jewish Federation to install rooftop and parking lot solar panels, projecting a $100K, or more, annual utility savings.

• The recently launched Lentzner Leadership Fellows Program will provide in-depth training and mentoring for a select group of emerging Jewish Federation Leaders, building upon the work of the Alpert New Leaders Forum, which recruits and trains leaders for all of our community agencies. • The Federation’s Men’s Philanthropy division and Solomon Society are kicking off the new year with exciting plans for a Men Only Israel mission, a mission trip to Cuba, supper club evenings for socializing and networking, unique local and international guest speaker forums, and other outreach programs, focused on leadership and philanthropy here locally, in Israel, and around the world. • Our Legacy of Leadership event will take place in January, recognizing and honoring our community leaders with Lifetime of Service and Pursuer of Justice awards, and is projected to raise over $120,000 to help our partner agencies and our shared campus facility. Please watch for further announcements and read about all of our upcoming community happenings in the Jewish Community Chronicle, the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County’s website, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. As your new Jewish Federation President, that’s what I’ve been thinking about. If it sounds like a lot, it is! And my hope is that our entire community can come together in support of planning our future. If you would like to be a part of this important and exciting process, this is where you come in because there’s plenty to be done! Our community and our agencies are stronger and better with the benefit of your voice and your support. By working together and communicating openly and honestly, we can guide our community toward a future that we will all be proud of. L’Shanah Tovah and best wishes to all of your families for a healthy and prosperous new year.

Refusing Shallowness During the High Holy Days By Rabbi Howard Laibson

Dear Friends, This is that time of year when according to our tradition, we are urged to Rabbi Howard review the year Laibson that is ending and, more importantly, our interactions with others during that time. If we take this task at all seriously -- as I hope we all do -- we are led to ask ourselves questions as individuals and as a community. Questions such as: · Have I devoted adequate time to the cultivation of my soul -- my spiritual and moral center? What more can I do? How can I do so? When will I do so? · Have I effectively and sincerely demonstrated my love for those closest to me? What more can I do? How

can I do so? When will I do so? · Have I been truthful in my relationships with the people around me, at work, school or at home? What more can I do? How can I do so? When will I do so? · Have I been honest in my business and professional dealings? What more can I do? How can I do so? When will I do so? As participants in our community, we might ask: · Have we demonstrated adequate care, concern and responsibility for the needy and disadvantaged among us? Both Jewish and nonJewish? What more can we do? How can we do so? When will I join the effort?

· Have we fulfilled the mitzvah of g’milut chasadim (deeds of loving kindness) by adequately supporting -through tzedakah (righteous giving) and through collective volunteerism -- our synagogue, the Jewish Federation and the local, national and international Jewish communal organizations it serves? What more can we do? How can we do so? When will I join the effort? · Have we done our very best to act and speak out on behalf of the State of Israel and it’s security? What more can we do? How can we do so? When will I join the effort? · Have we properly remained vigilant regarding the growing world-wide threat of anti-Semitism? What more can we do? How can we

do so? When will I join the effort? These are only a fraction of the serious questions which we ought to be asking ourselves during this High Holy Day season. Doing so requires sincerity, a genuine effort to be self-aware and self-critical, and an absolute refusal to hide behind shallowness.

JFCS and 24Hr HomeCare to Collaborate on In-Home Services Program

Mike Huntley, JFCS Encore Fellow (standing left), and Elaine Porzucki, JFCS Care Manager (standing center) join 24Hr HomeCare Account Executive Jesse Thomas (standing right) at the office of 24Hr HomeCare to introduce JFCS to their staff.

JFCS is pleased to announce the launch of atHome, a new collaboration between JFCS and 24Hr HomeCare, a premier non-medical home care company. This new program

will quickly link those who need expert, reliable, and competitively-priced in-home assistance for themselves or for a family member with 24Hr HomeCare, a top-rated, reputable provider of nonmedical in-home services. “As an agency working with many older adults and people with temporary or permanent physical or cognitive challenges, we want to be able to quickly respond to their needs. By collaborating closely with 24Hr HomeCare, we will be able to set appointments for clients and their families or circles of support to assess their needs quickly and begin

services right away. Our program will offer flexibility for clients so that they can utilize services for as short or as long a period of time as they need, “ said Kathryn Miles, JFCS Executive Director. “Our staff will be in contact with the team at 24Hr HomeCare to consistently review the status of our clients and to address feedback or changes in their situation,” added Miles. atHome will connect 24Hr HomeCare’s full range of in-home care services such as personal care, companionship, transportation services, light housekeeping, incontinence care, medication reminders, meal preparation,

and Philips Lifeline Emergency Response System to JFCS’ array of services, including assessments, support groups, case management, money management, counseling, and Friendly Visitor Program. “Our collaboration truly provides the majority of our clients with the care and attention they need to recover from a medical procedure at home, or to avoid a move to unfamiliar surroundings when they can no longer live at home safely without support. Through 24Hr HomeCare, there is always someone on duty, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, should a problem arise. This level of attention will ease the minds of

family members who may live far away and not be able to provide hands-on care,” noted Miles. “While we respect the desire for choice and have other referral options if our clients want to compare services and pricing, we have found that 24Hr HomeCare rises above all others because of their experienced and compassionate licensed caregivers.” For more information about atHome, please contact Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Long Beach & West Orange County at (562) 427-7916 or visit the JFCS website at www.jfcslongbeach.org.

RUNWAY 2016 Reflections By Wendy Manasse Wiese, RUNWAY Chief Visionary & Jewish Family & Children’s Service Board Member

Wendy Manasse Wiese RUNWAY Chief Visionary & JFCS Board Member

As I write this, RUNWAY: The Art of Design is just a few days from now. As a career fashion design professional, it is personally exciting for me that we are able to feature designs from fashion students attending

LBCC and CSULB. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to expose JFCS to an audience who is unaware of the agency and the wonderful work we do. This year RUNWAY is appropriately sandwiched between our memories of September 11, now fifteen years behind us but never forgotten, and the Jewish High Holy Days, where each of us, in our own way, self-assesses

our life to see where we lived up to high expectations, and where we missed the mark. David and I are so grateful for our many blessings and for the opportunity we have to apply our passions and means to produce the wonderful event that RUNWAY has become. Its success is especially significant to us because we support the important work of JFCS as the agency

empowers people to make positive life changes through professional,----affordable counseling, and support services. RUNWAY will raise over $40,000 for JFCS, and we are grateful to so many of you who are sponsors, who attend the event, who purchase opportunity drawing tickets for the priceless New York Experience, and/or who donate to the event in a

meaningful way. Also, I want to thank the RUNWAY Committee for the time and dedication they devote to the event. These incredible individuals bring talent, creativity, experience and focus to RUNWAY... making it more successful with each year. Thanks so much to all of you who support RUNWAY and JFCS!

themselves and their children and how to characterize a relationship as healthy. JFCS also offers Healing Through Art, where art projects are used as tools for expressing feelings and facilitating recovery. During each monthly session, clinicians guide the participants through processing their thoughts and feelings as they utilize the unique art projects that channel inner creativity and foster the participants’ self worth. Domestic violence is not

just a topic that is discussed once a year at JFCS. As one of our core programs, our counselors understand the deep impacts that all forms of domestic abuse have on victims and their children. True to our mission, we empower people to make positive changes through counseling and group programs carefully designed for them, and by providing social services to help fulfill some of their basic needs as they create a new life for themselves and their families.

JFCS Helps Victims of Domestic Violence October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence is not an easy subject to discuss.. In fact, it’s much more comfortable to not think about it. After all, it does not affect our family, nor any of our neighbors—right? There is at least a one in four chance that this assumption is incorrect, because according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in three women and one in four men have been victims

of domestic violence in this country. Domestic violence can take on many forms. We are all familiar with physical abuse, but verbal abuse from a partner who also feels the need to monitor the activities of the other partner, or to control finances of the home so that a partner has no means to take care of basic needs for herself or her children—these too are forms of abuse that cause feelings of fear while at home. At JFCS, we work with

victims of domestic violence of all forms. In addition to our counseling services, our courtapproved 14-week program, Healthy Relationships, Healthy Kids, is free of charge and is facilitated by our clinical staff. As part of a small, supportive group of women who share a common problem, participants are comfortable processing their emotions as they are guided through the topics of the program. The outcome is that they understand how to make good choices for

AJCC STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Message from the Executive Director

On behalf of everyone on the entire team here at the Alpert Jewish Community Center, I'd like to wish you a happy, healthful, and peaceful New Year! Please remember that the Alpert JCC will be closing at 6pm on Sunday, October 2, and will remain closed on Monday, October 3, in observance of Rosh Hashanah. We will also close at 6pm on Tuesday, October 11 and remain closed on Wednesday, October 12, in observance of Yom Kippur. There is so much happening here at the Alpert JCC to celebrate the holidays! Please have a look at all the great programs we have for you in these pages of Around the J, and of course keep checking the website and your weekly Monday emails for the latest updates. Be sure to stop in the promenade on Tuesday, October 4, for apples and honey, and on Wednesday, October 5, we will be having our senior Rosh Hashanah lunch. The following week is Sukkot, and you’ll see our festive sukkah complete with decorations from our kids in ECE and Kids’ University. Tuesday night, October 18, at 5:30 we will be hosting PJ Library’s Dinner & Storytime in the sukkah. The kids have a great time, so be sure to sign up!

Gayle Ehrenberg

Director of Youth and Family Programs Gayle Ehrenberg has been a part of the Alpert Jewish Community Center since she came here with friends when she was in middle school. She always thought it was a great place to hang out, and she enjoyed being a part of the community. When she had her first son, Asher, she enrolled him in the Early Childhood Education program, and that’s when the fun began! In 1999, Gayle was offered an administrative position with Lynne Rosenstein in the adult department. She has a degree in instrumental music (she plays the sax!) from Cal State Long Beach with an emphasis in Special Education, so it was natural that she eventually became a part of the ECE staff. She began as an assistant teacher and then eventually taught full time. She also taught in the ECE parent-participation class From the Beginning. Shortly after her second son, Nate, was born in 2001, she became the Volunteer Coordinator for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, a position she held for eight years, until 2009, when she took a leave of absence to care for her ailing parents. Knowing what a great job she would do, Jeffrey Rips asked Gayle to come back and work as the interim director for the RSVP program last December after we lost Diane Johnson. A few months in, she accepted the position as the new RSVP Director. Because Gayle wanted to have a more integral part of the AJCC, Gayle was offered the position of Director of Youth and Family Programs when Natalie Chernik accepted the position of Director of Membership Services at the end of August.

Also that week is our first Women’s Shabbat Dinner in the sukkah on Friday, October 21, at 6pm. It will be a lively evening of song and prayer with our very own Shlomit Jackson and Maureen Lawrence (ShloMo) leading the service.

“The AJCC has always held a place of comfort for me,” Gayle explains, “Working here feels like a win-win situation. It serves as my home away from home, a place where I can be myself. Not only am I surrounded by the Jewish community my kids and I grew up in, but we are also fortunate to be encircled by such an amazingly diverse population. People from all walks of life have a place in our center. This makes the AJCC a very unique place to be.

The High Holidays are a time of reflection and gratitude, and as always, I am so blessed to be a part of the thriving community that is the Alpert JCC. Around the Jewish holidays and the rest of the year, we strive to give our members a place that feels like a home away from home and a place that you feel will always be Your Center For Life.

L’Shalom

Jeffrey Rips

AJCC Executive Director

“The AJCC Youth, Teen and Camp Program already have a remarkable reputation in our community as a safe haven for our children to play, learn and thrive in. As Director, I hope to build on this already strong platform, adding new and dynamic programming, not only for our youth and teens, but for our families as well. I look forward to the ongoing opportunity to work with a dynamic staff and to be in integral part of the vibrant growth and

development of the AJCC.”

Jax Cole

FitFast

When Jax Cole was looking for a pool to train in for her swim across the Catalina Channel, she decided that the Alpert Jewish Community Center would be perfect for her needs. She went to Pre-K and Kindergarten here at the AJCC circa 1983-84, so she was already connected to the Center.

Jax explains that she got the gift of swimming from her maternal grandfather: “He was a swimmer, and I’m named for him. I feel like his spirit is a part of me. He died June 14 a few years before I was born, and I was also born on June 14. My grandfather would regularly swim across the Rhine River, and when he needed to flee Nazi Germany, he swam across the river into France. He saw the Holocaust coming and urged his family to get out of there. After swimming across the Rhine, he then rode a bike across France, ran barefoot across the mountains to a seaport where he stowed away in a barrel on a ship to America. Once he was in the New York harbor, he dove overboard and swam to Ellis Island!” It’s clear that Jax has swimming in her blood.

Jax says she loves being a member here. “It’s convenient to where I live, and it’s a pleasant environment. There is usually a lot of space in the pool and the people are very friendly. There’s a great locker room, and I can lift weights and stretch anytime. I really wanted a place with clean locker rooms and a clean pool. Those are so important. It’s amazing how many places don’t have them.

Swimming to Catalina involves a lot more than just diving in and hoping for the best. There are people to help her at every step, from her coach, to the volunteers who feed her, to the official observers on the escort boat. “I am fortunate that I have a lot of support from friends, and that has helped a lot with the costs. My father is my doctor, one of my friends is my personal trainer, and my coach is from my Pomona-Pitzer swimming days—Penny Lee Dean, who still holds the record 40 years later for swimming the Catalina Channel.” The swim starts at 11pm on October 7. “The distance of the swim from Doctor's Cove on Catalina Island to Terranea Cove in Palos Verdes is 21 miles,” Jax explains, “The average successful attempt takes 11h 30 min. I will be very happy to simply complete the crossing successfully. Mother Nature has the first and last word, but my aim is to cross it in 9 hours or faster.” Jax swims at the AJCC pool twice a week—each workout is 5000-6000 yards (200-250 laps)—and she is up to 41 miles of ocean swimming a week. If you would like to support Jax on her swim to Catalina, you can find information at gofundme.com/jaxswimscatalina. If you see Jax working out at the pool, be sure to say hello and wish her luck!

JLI: Empowering the Next Generation of CSU Jewish Student Leaders Applications were opened up last month for Beach Hillel’s Jewish Leadership Initiative (JLI) in which students will go through a series of monthly trainings, workshops, and professional events to learn how to become effective Jewish leaders on campus! Goals of the Jewish Leadership Initiative include: (1) providing students with an enriching experience that will prepare them for leadership within the Jewish community and beyond, (2) facilitating individual student growth through the application of Jewish leadership techniques within the scope of Beach Hillel, and (3) encouraging innovative thinking and practice for Jewish student leaders. If you are interested in applying for the program, visit beachhillel.org/programs/JLI!

Sukkah Hop Brings Beach Hillel Together

l’shanah tovah

Beach Hillel’s female college students smiling before they “hop” to the next Sukkah.

This year, Beach Hillel put on our annual Sukkah Hop, an event that brings students together with members of the Long Beach Jewish Community for the festive holiday of Sukkot. The Sukkah Hop is our annual program where community members open their home and as a

group, students go from from one home to the next. At each Sukkah, students enjoy snacks, learn songs, and socialize with each other. Beach Hillel partnered with Chabad of Irvine and Chapman Hillel to join us for this year’s Sukkah Hop festivities.

Thanks to our generous community members, this year we were able to visit Sukkahs and say the blessings over the lulav and etrog under the stars. Many students say that our Sukkah Hop is one of their favorite Beach Hillel events of the year!

HEBREW ACADEMY

Award Winning Academics in a Genuine Jewish Environment 14401 WILLOW LANE, HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA 92647 WEB: www.hacds.org PHONE: 714-898-0051 CAMP SILVER GAN ISRAEL: www.campsgi.com

BIG NEWS: Meet the New Principal

The Hebrew Academy is proud to announce the appointment of our new principal, Dr. Brenda Harari. Dr. Harari has been passionately committed to excellence in education for 25 years. She received her BA in psychology from University of California, San Diego, and completed a Master’s in Education, followed by a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. Her professional experience spans administrative leadership, research, teacher training in colleges and universities, curriculum development, and program design. As an educational leader, Dr. Harari is dedicated to providing an environment where students are inspired to reach their academic and human potential

while supporting teachers and families, to create a highly effective learning environment that embraces high expectations together with connection, joy, and compassion. She believes that achievement is realized when teachers and parents maintain high expectations and create supportive learning environments that address the individual needs of each child, and the community at large. Dr. Harari was raised in Southern California with a strong commitment to authentic learning, social justice, and a love and appreciation for diverse cultures. She is a world traveler and a life-long learner, fascinated by culture, sociology, and history. She, her husband, and her 3 sons enjoy hiking, beach walking, skiing, travelling, reading, and learning together. According to Dr. Harari, the Hebrew Academy of Orange County is such an exciting place to be! Student achievement is what drives our outstanding and highlyqualified teachers, while the warm, inclusive community is what makes the school their

second home! Our rigorous dual curriculum cultivates a love of learning, while blending timeless traditions with state-ofthe art instructional strategies. The extensive offerings in enrichment activities ensure that every student has the opportunity to discover his/ her passion and cultivate creativity! This community is truly unique in its academic excellence, diversity of offerings, commitment to educating the whole child, and its wholesome values that provide a sense of safety and belonging for children and their families! “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lend my leadership as the school embarks on the next phase of growth and development.” “Through a talented administration and staff, my kids get all the benefits of a rigorous academic program, within a loving and caring environment that feels like a big hug!”, remarked Alea Katan a parent in Hebrew Academy. We invite you to meet our new principal and explore our award-winning program.

From Our Alumni Corner: Leah Paley With 34 second generation families (alumni who have chosen to send their children to The Hebrew Academy), The Hebrew Academy still feels like family. One alumna, Leah Paley, is sending her 9th grade daughter across the country to experience the same outstanding education that she did. She writes to us, “It’s hard to believe that it’s actually 33 years since we last were all together at The Hebrew Academy. Hard to believe because, although a lot of time has passed, our Hebrew Academy friendships

have remained a big part of our lives. Together we have celebrated our simchas (happy events), even flying across the country to be with each other in times of joy, and we have been able to be a support for each other during our times of sadness and loss. There is a special bond, a

glue, that has held us together all these years. So although the time has passed, the memories of our days at The Hebrew Academy continue into the future. The education and tools to navigate through life that we received from the Hebrew Academy are solid. I hope to be able to pass on to the future generation, the love of Judaism, Torah, and Mitzvot that were ingrained and woven through our studies at The Hebrew Academy. I am blessed to be able to send my own daughter to The Hebrew Academy. Thank you HA family.”

Jewish Community Foundation OF GREATER LONG BEACH & WEST ORANGE COUNTY

Educational Workshop Please save the date of Wednesday, November 16th, 2016 at 7:00 pm. The Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County will host an educational workshop with Rabbi Abba Perlmuter. The workshop is free and open to the entire community. For more information, please email Sharon Kenigsberg at sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org.

Dr. Edna Nahshon will present the history of late 19th to mid 20th century Manhattan’s Second Avenue, also known as “Yiddish Broadway.” The Yiddish theater and arts culture flourished in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, bringing in audiences of over 1.5 million first and second generation Eastern-European Jewish immigrants.

The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is very excited to welcome Dr. Edna Nahshon to Long Beach to discuss the recent exhibition she curated at the Museum of the City of New York on Yiddish theater in America. Her talk will take place on Thursday, October 27th, at 7:30 pm, in the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. As the New York Times stated in its review of her exhibition, “a definite if wobbly line connects the

Yiddish theater of 19thcentury Eastern Europe and the Lower East Side to the giants of modern American entertainment. It traces a long road from the ghettos and shtetls to Broadway and Hollywood and the likes of Marlon Brando and Barbra Streisand.” This should be a fascinating talk, covering both the largerthan-life personalities of the Yiddish theater as well as the powerful legacy of this incredibly important cultural center. It is not only part of the

heritage of Jews in general and of American Jews in particular, but very much a major part of American theater and culture. Like all CSULB Jewish Lecture Studies talks, this concert and discussion is free and open to the public. There is no need to reserve a space. For more information on this talk or upcoming spring semester events, please contact Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger at jeffrey.blutinger@csulb.edu.
