FEATURE STORY
Opening Night: Kick-off Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign By Danny Levy, Director of Development
This year’s Opening Night event will be kicked off with the screening of On the Map, about the struggles and triumphs of the 1977 Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team.
As we are now into the New Year, let’s do the impossible. Dream big. Go for gold. Help those in need. Provide Jewish possibilities for all. Succeed greatly. These are all things we do as a community, every day, every year. We support each other, our neighbors, who we know. We also support those we don’t know, here and across the world. Sometimes we do this against heavy odds, whether it be destructive weather, unyielding people, or lack of money. We survive. You might say we are a team. A team you say? Perhaps like the 1977 Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team. They triumphed against all odds. Opening Night And you are in luck – we just happen to be showing On The Map, the incredible story about that very 1977 Maccabi basketball team on Opening Night, Wednesday November 8th, 2017, presented by Gelson’s Supermarkets and in partnership with On The Map Foundation and the Giving Back Fund. At the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, a dessert reception will take place in the Lentzner Family Promenade and the Leon & Barbara Shoag Rotunda beginning at 6:00 pm, followed by a screening of On The Map in the Amy & Richard Lipeles Family Auditorium at 7:00 pm. Tickets for Opening Night are free with a pledge to the Jewish Federation’s 2018/5778 Annual Community Campaign. In addition, you may purchase a discounted Film Festival Pass for only $40. On The Map tells the against-all-odds story of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s 1977 European Championship, which took place at a time when the Middle East was still reeling from the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the 1972 Olympic massacre at Munich, and the 1976 hijacking of an Air 2 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |
France flight from Tel Aviv. Through the of lens of sports, On The Map presents a much broader story of how one team captured the heart of a nation amidst domestic turmoil and the global machinations of the Cold War. The film recounts how an underdog Israeli basketball team prevailed over a series of European basketball powers, including CSKA Moscow (known in the West as “Red Army”), a team that repeatedly refused to compete against Israeli competitors. Moments after this highly charged and historic win, Israeli-American basketball hero Tal Brody became an indelible part of a young country’s history when he famously said, “Israel is On The Map, not just in sport, but in everything.” Told through the eyes of six American basketball players who joined Maccabi and helped the club defeat top teams from Spain, Italy, and the Soviet Union, the film features interviews with basketball icon Bill Walton (who had a unique personal connection to Brody) and former NBA Commissioner David Stern. On The Map combines the pulse-pounding action of a high-stakes thriller with an incendiary political backdrop to deliver a film that will mesmerize basketball fans and captures the spirit of a nation triumphant against all odds. On The Map also features incisive interviews with, among others, Michael Oren, Israel’s former Ambassador to the United States, and Natan Sharansky, a notable Israeli politician who spent years imprisoned in Soviet jails. Long Beach Jewish Film Festival This evening is also the opening of the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival. The Long Beach Jewish Film Festival is co-sponsored by the Alpert Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation, the Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Long Beach Hillel, and CSULB Jewish Studies Program. In addition to Opening Night, there are four other unique, Jewish-themed films being screened. (See panel to the right and Inside The J (1A) for more information.) Long Beach Jewish Film Festival individual tickets, other than for Opening Night, or the Film Festival Pass, will be available at the P.E. desk or at registration on Opening Night. Hurricanes Hit: Federation is There By Danny Levy, Director of Development
Volunteers distributing packages.
These last few weeks, we witnessed an awe-inspiring demonstration of support and love for fellow Jews as millions of dollars and large groups of volunteers poured into communities devastated by hurricanes. It was particularly moving to hear about Israelis in Petach Tikva, going door to door to collect funds for their sister city of Houston. We were also moved by last week’s decision by the Israeli Government, to send a generous gift of $1M to help the local Jewish community recover from damages inflicted by Hurricane Harvey. This conveyed a concrete expression of our core belief that Kol Israel Arevim Zeh L’Zeh – all Jews are responsible for one another. Locally, we as a community have currently contributed over $7,000 to the Hurricane Relief Fund. Donations are still needed to continue. Visit jewishlongbeach.org .
Hurricane Irma: Long-Term Power Outages Creating Health Risks for Seniors The unexpected shift of Hurricane Irma to Florida’s west coast appears to have mostly spared our largest Jewish population centers from what could have been a terrible disaster. But long-term power outages in Florida’s hot and humid climate are raising serious health concerns, especially for many seniors. According to The New York Times, there have already been a number of deaths in nursing homes. Some areas of the state could be looking at many more days without electricity. Jacob Solomon, President of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, spoke to The Jerusalem Post and mentioned the community’s concern for vulnerable populations like the elderly. The Bob Baldwin Memorial Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation was established to promote Jewish continuity by connecting our teens to Israel through organized peer trips, community trips, and educational programs. Grant applications are now available for teens (ages 13-19) planning to go on missions/trips to Israel in 2018 sponsored by an approved non-profit organization. Young adults (ages 20-30) who plan

Gabriel Prunty, one of last year’s Baldwin Grant recipients, who went on a trip with the National Federation of Temple Youth, sent us the following comments: “Israel has absolutely changed my perspective of the world and
With the help of the Baldwin Grant, I was able to attend this summer program with many of my friends from Southern California. We traveled all over Israel, from as far north as the Lebanon border all the way down to Eilat. The highlights of the summer for me were the Shabbats I spent in Jerusalem and Chevron. We visited several holy graves, Yad V’Shem, the Blind Museum, hiked all over Northern Israel, climbed Masada, floated in
the Dead Sea, para-sailed in Eilat, and many other things. It was the best 6 weeks of my life and I will never forget it! Thank you to my parents, the Jewish Community Foundation and the Baldwin Grant for this opportunity”. The Bob Baldwin Memorial Fund, through the vision of the Baldwin and Linden families, provides a way for our youth to connect to Israel and the local community. The youth that benefit from this wonderful gift are our future. The Jewish Community Foundation helps to ensure our future through the many funds held on behalf of donors in the community. Each generation continuing to provide for the next is one way that the Jewish Community Foundation helps to ensure our future. If you would like more information on how to contribute to an existing fund at the Foundation, start your own fund, or receive a Baldwin Grant application, please contact Sharon Kenigsberg at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008 or sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org.
Gifts of Life Insurance Life insurance is a wonderful way to make a large gift in the future, using a small amount of current funds. By making the Jewish Community Foundation the owner and beneficiary of your policy, the annual premium is fully tax-deductible. You may gift an existing policy or purchase a policy as an endowment to benefit the Jewish Community in the future. You can designate which organization will benefit from your deferred gift. If the policy has a cash value, you can take a deduction approximately equal to the cash value at the time of the gift. In addition, if annual premiums are still to be made and you continue to pay them, those premiums will become tax-deductible each year.

Learning Never Ends

By Rabbi Levi Perelmuter
Everyone knows the American ‘national pastime’ of Baseball. For many generations, people from Rabbi Levi all walks of Perelmuter life in the United States grew up with some experience playing the nation’s favorite game. Lesser known to many in our community is the Jewish people’s own national pastime. Some would argue that our people most enjoy cooking and eating, and that spending time in the kitchen should be known as our favorite leisure. However much my mother made it seem true that Judaism places the highest priority on keeping our appetites satisfied, the truth is that our people are devoted to a much higher form of leisure.
The study of the Torah is the Jewish people’s ‘national pastime’. At any time in our history, regardless of the trying circumstances we were going through, the Torah was the center of our universe. At any place in the world, across many different cultures, Sephardi or Ashkenazi, Torah study was a binding glue that united the Jewish people. As the great Rabbi Akiva of the Mishna explained, a Jewish person without Torah is like a fish without water. I admit there is room for some confusion regarding the above, as in fact, studying Torah does not seem to be the most popular activity amongst the Jewish people today. If you relate to this confusion I would like to point out the following point. We are living in a ‘Golden Age’ of Torah scholarship. There are more centers of Torah study
(Yeshivos) today than there has been in any other time in our history. The amount of Torah literature printed and disseminated in our generation is far beyond any other period in our past. Most importantly, the largest difference regarding studying Torah today versus throughout our history is the accessibility. Previously, there did exist a ‘Torah Scholar’ class. Many who were underprivileged or disadvantaged in some way did not have either the time to study or the background required for admittance in a Yeshiva. That no longer exists as a problem for our nation. There are countless institutions devoted to disseminating the Torah to every single Jewish person. The internet is exploding with Torah resources: Chabad.org, Sefaria.org and MyJewishLearning.com to just name a few. There are many,
many more. Our Chabad philosophy teaches that every single Jewish person has a portion or topic of Torah study that they are destined to master. If you would like guidance as to where your own personal Torah study should start, reach out to your local Rabbi. Don’t have a Rabbi?... Go to Google.com, search for ‘Torah’, and dive right in! Rabbi Levi Perelmuter is the new associate rabbi/co-staff youth leader of Shul By The Shore, working with Jewish teens in the greater Long Beach community. Rabbi Levi Perelmuter will focus on building community among Jewish teens through programs such as Shabbat meals, teen events such as Sukkot at the Beach, and supporting youth at area high schools interested in Jewish clubs and service organizations. To this, Levi brings his ties to national Jewish youth organizations including CTeen and the Sinai Scholar’s Society.

As I write this, RUNWAY: At Every Age is now in our rearview mirror. It is personally exciting for me that this year we were able to take a regular feature from Harper’s Bazaar magazine and make it our own, showing how women, at every age and body type, can look great wearing today’s fashion trends. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to expose JFCS to an audience who may be unaware of the agency and the impactful work we do to heal the community, one person, one family at a time. This event could not
happen without an incredible village to support it. Sincere thanks are in order for the RUNWAY Committee and the expertise they bring to the event; to Bonnie McCarthy for her insightful commentary as host; to all who worked behind the scenes as dressers, make-up artists, and hair stylists; to the fabulous group of community volunteers and professional models who made the fashions reality for the audience; to Macy’s Los Cerritos Center and their store manager, Rich Leduc, for their support and generosity; and to the JFCS staff and board for help beyond what can be described here. I especially want to thank those who sponsored, attended, donated, and/or bought New York Experience

raffle tickets. Thanks to your generosity and support, we will raise over $70,000 for JFCS, and 100% of these funds go to the agency. David and I are so grateful for our many blessings and for the opportunity we have to apply our passions and means to produce and underwrite the expenses of RUNWAY. Its success is especially significant to us because we support the important work of JFCS as the agency empowers people to make positive life changes through professional, affordable counseling and support services. Thanks so much to all of you who support RUNWAY and JFCS!

As we age, there are certain stressors many of us experience, including the loss of income when we retire, the loss of loved ones as friends or spouses pass away, the loss of our independence as we develop challenges with mobility and other healthrelated issues. We may experience loneliness or social isolation, and may be forced to move in to a new and unfamiliar living situation. These factors all contribute to the development of depression. Depression affects 15 -20% of Americans aged 65 or
older. Yet, depression in older adults often goes untreated as people view it as part of the aging process. There is a real benefit to talking about the feelings associated with aging. If you think that you or a loved one may be struggling with depression, it is important to reach out and get help. EVENT SPOTLIGHT
ECE First Annual Alumni Reunion
The AJCC pool and playground were filled with laughing kids and chatting parents as they enjoyed the fabulous atmosphere of the First Annual ECE Alumni Reunion on September 9, 2017. With over 300 parents and alum of all ages in attendance, the excited energy was palpable as students reunited and parents reconnected. The joyful music of Steel Parade steel drum band serenaded swimmers as the evening began with swimming and a poolside barbecue. After dinner everyone moved onto the ECE playground where they enjoyed a bounce house, face painting, and a sunset movie accompanied by popcorn and ice cream. The evening culminated with a beautiful cake for the Class of 2015 who had the most alumni in attendance and earned the title of “Best Class Ever.” The evening was the brainchild of ECE mom Genevieve Brill-Murphy, and she was absolutely thrilled with the results. Genevieve raved, “There was so much fun had by all, and so many families commented that their kids had an amazing time. The kids even thanked their parents for bringing them! They miss the J and loved coming back and connecting with their friends. Parents reported the same—they loved catching up with old friends and seeing how much their kids’ friends had grown. Everyone had the feeling that they had come back ‘home’ for a while. I heard from many parents that the event was a huge success and they gave it a 10!” Genevieve’s enthusiasm for the evening was infectious as she talked about her own experience: “My personal favorite part was sitting down by the playground at the end of the night and watching the look of pure joy on the kids’ faces as they raced around having the time of their lives with their old buddies... that is what the evening was all about.” The ECE reunion was such a fantastic success that many of the parents and kids are already asking for the event to take place again next year. No worries, plans are already shaping up for the Second Annual ECE Reunion! The biggest question is, who will win next year’s title of Best Class Ever? - Written by Erika Hillinger

members of the Knesset, the United Nations Security council, and delegates from the historic Camp David Accords. Over the past several months, a committee of 16 students from Hillel and MUN have worked tirelessly to lasting and impactful experience for the 85 participants of Model Knesset. As part of the full

Get Ready for Sukkah Hop!
(l): The Sukkot Hop is an annual tradition of Beach Hillel to bring students together with their community members and celebrate the traditions of Sukkot. (r): Backyard of the Alevy Family who are one of the many families contributing their homes for the Sukkot Hop.
On October 10th, Beach Hillel is continuing its tradition of hosting our annual Sukkah Hop, in partnership with several community members, who have opened their homes to host our students as those celebrate Sukkot under different Sukkahs. As one of our most popular events of the year, Sukkah Hop draws many diverse Jewish students to become engaged with Beach Hillel. For some of them it might be there first time shaking the
lulav and etrog, while for other students it reminds them of Sukkot celebrations during their youth. Even extending beyond CSU Long Beach, many students come from our network of local community colleges and Chapman Hillel, a longtime Sukkah Hop partner. If you are interested in sponsoring other Sukkot programs, please head to the Beach Hillel website at http://beachhillel.org/support

As the new academic year starts in Hebrew Academy, you can feel the differences. At The Hebrew Academy, each student’s success is important. Open communication, measuring personal success, and full engagement make up the common core of the school. We take it very seriously! major programs: the first is about personal growth in terms of academics, and the second program is the new Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. Most of the local schools, including Hebrew Academy are following the Common Core State Standards, which is a a set of highquality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA)
and more. The addition of the new i-READY program for its combined diagnostics allow for individualize instructions for both reading and math in a user-friendly online format. This diagnostic and adaptive resource pinpoints the needs of each student down to the sub-skill level in both reading and math, which will help teachers better monitor their students being on track to achieve their own learning goals. Academics is not the only way the school is progressing. When we look at the child education movement, and the SEL curriculum program, we want to ensure that our students thrive in all areas of growth and development, including having the feeling of safety and positivity in their learning. measures key areas of social and emotional skill development, including self regulation, self awareness, flexibility and the ability to accept other opinions other than each student’s own. We are providing opportunities for students to practice and hone these skills, giving the students an opportunity to apply these skills in various situations. The teachers have also been trained to continue taking classes in which to use the SEL approach at its finest, which deliver explicit lessons that teach social and emotional skills, then finding opportunities for students to reinforce such usage throughout the day. The SEL is not a stand alone program. It is being integrated into our Jewish Studies curriculum, where the kids practice their emotions
through the stories in the Torah and the Jewish values that they have been taught in school. Our students are using critical thinking skills on the soccer field, teamwork in PBL (Project Based Learning), empathy they’ve learned in the Parasha of the week or in Hebrew class where they learn about what Israel advocates, or even understanding a simple lesson in Jewish history. Our children are learning the fundamental skills that will help them exhibit menschlichkeit in their classrooms, school, families, and communities. If this rich and diverse educational environment sounds right for you, we encourage you to call The Hebrew Academy for a tour, or email Nelli Greenspan at Nelli@hacds.org .

CSULB Jewish Lecture Series: The Middle East and the Trump Administration
Dr. Steven Spiegel
The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is very pleased bringing Dr. Steven Spiegel to Long Beach. He will speak 7:30 pm, Monday evening, October 9th, at the Alpert Jewish Community Center (3801 E. Willow St., Long Beach) on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. As one of the leading experts in the United States on American policy in the Middle East, Dr. Spiegel has advised leaders such as U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas and President Bill Clinton. He will bring his legendary wit and wisdom to our community where he will, with insight and humor, examine the nuances
and trajectory of President Trump’s Middle East policy. Throughout the decades, Dr. Spiegel has taught Political Science and International Relations at UCLA, and is an expert in American foreign policy in the Middle East, particularly Israel. He is the author of The Other Arab-Israeli Conflict: Making America’s Middle East Policy, from Truman to Reagan (1985) and coauthor of The Peace Puzzle: America’s Quest for ArabIsraeli Peace from 19892011 (2013). Dr. Spiegel speaks in a clear and concise manner, and has the rare ability to make complex matters easily intelligible, and through deft humor manages to be both enlightening and entertaining. Please don’t miss him! Like all Jewish Studies talks, it is free and open to the public; there is no need to reserve a space. For more information on this talk or fall semester events, please contact Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger, Jeffrey.Blutinger@csulb.edu . jewishlongbeach.org | OCTOBER 2017 |
