FEATURE STORY

70 Years - How it All Began By Danny Levy, Director of Development

The Jewish Federation has a long and full seventy years to begin celebrating this month. Although, truth be told, we really began in 1937. Across the country, Jewish Welfare Fund campaigns, the predecessor to Jewish Federations, began in 1929. Long Beach had its first campaign for United Jewry in 1937. Under the chairmanship of attorney Nathan Nagel, who came to Long Beach from Detroit, Michigan, the campaign raised $3,900.

The 1948 Executive Committee of the United Jewish Welfare Fund.

Our first campaign report in 1937.

Only 10 years later, what’s known today as The Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County was established in 1947 as the Jewish Community Council. The Council was formally incorporated in 1948, with Irv Schneider as the first president. (In the same year, the Jewish Community Council helped establish the Jewish Community Center, with Sam Leddel as its first president). In the coming months, we will share on these pages and in emails, a bit of our history, the events that shaped us, the fundraising we accomplished, and the impact we have made here at home, across the globe, and in Israel. This will cumulate with a historical keepsake printed version to be presented on Sunday, June 23rd, in conjunction with a community wide Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus extravaganza.

It was a very important year. The Freedom Train stopped in Long Beach and the problems in Palestine dominated the news. The organization of the 1948 United Jewish Welfare Fund Campaign, generated by the heroism of the security forces in Palestine, and in preparation for the mass exodus of European DP’s (displaced persons), gathered the momentum of a genuine people’s movement. The 1948 Campaign, more so than any previous fundraising effort, had the wholehearted and stimulating endorsement of the entire Jewish Community. The 1948 Campaign had no individual chairman, but had three co-chairs: Charles Savitz, Irving Schneider, and Murray Greenwood. They created a Women’s Division, a Men’s division, and later on added a Youth Division, which altogether raised a record $190,835. We also provided the funding for the first Jewish Community Center – the entire 6th floor in the Masonic Temple, located at 835 Locust Avenue in Downtown Long Beach. More exciting stories from the past – that got us to where we are today, will be featured in next month’s issue.

Our Story Continues In 1947, as the U.N. approved the partition for Israel to become a state – locally, we hired our first Executive Director, Hirsh Kaplan, who started a semi-monthly newspaper, The Long Beach Jewish Community Council News, with Sidney A. Hartmann as editor, and the United Jewish Welfare Fund campaign raised $101,531.

Opening Night- A Love Story By Danny Levy, Director of Development

Opening Night To kick-off the 2019/5779 Annual Community Campaign and the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival, the Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation offer a dessert reception and film screening. Tickets are Free, for a minimum campaign gift of $18. We will be showing the film An Israeli Love Story, based on the true events of Israel’s famed actress and director, Pnina Gary, and Eli Ben-Zvi, son of Israel’s second president. The film’s young lovers meet under unusual pretenses, eventually playing out their passionate destiny against the dangerous backdrop of the birth of Israel. Opening Night will take place on Wednesday November 7th, 2018 at 6:00 pm with the reception in the Lenztner Family Promenade and Leon & Barbara Shoag Rotunda. The reception is proudly sponsored by Gelson’s Supermarkets and Solar Wholesale Group. The film screening will begin at 7:00 pm, inside the Amy & Richard Lipeles Auditorium at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. An Israeli Love Story takes place in Israel, in 1947. Eighteen year-old Margalit comes from a northern moshav in pre-state Israel, where she immerses herself in theater. She dreams to one day become an actress. Unexpectedly along the way, she comes across 24 year-old Eli from Kibbutz Beit Keshet. Margalit is enamored by the young man, whom she later learns, is serving in the Palmach, the elite fighting

force hoping to liberate the Jewish Community during the period of the British Mandate for Palestine. She tries to get close to him, hoping he’ll fall for her, but things don’t go so smoothly. He has a girlfriend and is busy with the dramatic events preceding Israel’s formation. Slowly the barriers come down, Margalit moves in with Eli and they set up a date for their wedding. But then, Israel’s harsh reality steps in. The film recounts the historical events of Gary’s tragic relationship with Eli Ben-Zvi, the son of Yitzhak Ben-Zvi (later to become the second president of Israel), who was killed a few days prior to their announced wedding day in an Arab ambush. An Israeli Love Story will have you going through all types of emotions, from its high-intensity action scenes to its tender romantic moments shared between the main characters. At its core, the film delivers a compelling monodrama of events which led up to the established recognition of our beloved Israel. Long Beach Jewish Film Festival Opening Night is also the beginning of the the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival, which is co-sponsored by the Alpert Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation & the Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Long Beach Hillel, and CSULB Jewish Studies Program. A lineup of four other remarkable Jewish-themed films will be screened: The Oslo Diaries Thursday, 11/8, 7:00 pm

One Stop Giving: Advantages of a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development

Do you give to multiple charities over the course of a year? Would you be interested in having one convenient way to give to all of your charities? If so, then a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund may be for you. By opening a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund (DAPF) at the Jewish Community Foundation before December 31st, you will be able to receive a charitable tax-deduction this year*. A DAPF allows you the flexibility of opening the fund in one year and then using this fund to recommend distributions to any IRS approved nonprofit organization when it’s convenient for you. If you write multiple checks to several non-profit organizations over the course of a year, then a DAPF allows you to centralize your charitable dollars into one account. You open the fund and The Jewish Community Foundation does the work. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about these Funds.

How Do I Open a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund (DAPF)? Your personal DAPF is established by making a minimum contribution of $2,000.00 in cash or securities to the Jewish Community Foundation. Any additional contributions of various amounts can be made at any time and are also tax-deductible. A balance of $1,000 is needed to keep the fund open. Many donors choose to fund their DAPF with longterm appreciated securities. By donating appreciated stock held for more than one year to a DAPF, donors can avoid or reduce capital gains taxes. What is the Process for Distributing the Funds? The DAPF is the property of the Jewish Community Foundation but you have the privilege of making recommendations for the distributions of gifts to qualified charitable organizations on your schedule. Once a deposit

is made to the fund, there is a 90 day waiting period before a distribution can be made. Since the Foundation does not charge any fees for DAPF’s, the 90 day period allows the Foundation to accumulate some investment earnings. All the investment earnings are pooled into the Foundation’s General Unrestricted Fund which is used to make grants to local agencies and synagogues and to support the donor services provided by the Foundation. Distributions are made twice a month and you can mail, e-mail or fax over the distribution forms. The Foundation checks each distribution to assure that it goes only to IRS sanctioned charities. The Foundation writes and mails the check in the name of your fund. A DAPF may only be used to make donations and no goods or services may be received. The minimum request for a distribution is $50.

How do I know that my charity has received my distribution? A letter from the Foundation accompanies each check distributed. The letter includes the name of the DAPF holder who recommended the distribution. The charity is asked to send the fund holder a receipt of acknowledgment. The letter also states that the gift may not be applied to pay for goods or services or applied to any outstanding obligations.

The Jewish Community Foundation staff is here to answer questions and help you understand all your options. Through our free Personalized Donor Services, we are available to work with you and your advisors to help you meet your charitable goals. For additional information, please call Sharon Kenigsberg at the Jewish Community Foundation, (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008, or send an e-mail sharonk@jewishlongbeach. How often will I receive org statements? Each time you make a deposit into your DAPF, you will receive a receipt from the Foundation. The Foundation maintains all financial records and will credit all contributions and deduct all distributions from *Please note: The information provided in this article is general the fund. Serious Talk: Laugh a Little, Live a Lot! By Rabbi Abba Perelmuter

“We don’t laugh because we’re happy we’re happy because we laugh,” uttered William James. I do oughta Rabbi Abba say, when we Perelmuter all start facing our every day c h a l l e n g e s head-on, people need to know it’s okay to laugh more! Not only does laughter improve our spiritual lives but studies have shown that it improves our physiological lives as well. The Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement, made joy a cornerstone of his revolution. He was oft to say, “Melancholy is not a sin

but where it takes you no sin can, and joy is not a Mitzvah but where joy brings you no Mitzvah can.” Notice in life that optimistic, joyful people are generally surrounded by an abundance of family and friends; while bitter, angry people tend to be alone. Happiness lends itself to a full, rich life. Who doesn’t want these things? You may wonder where to find such laughter in a world that is often humorless, the answer is simple- you can find laughter everywhere you look! Standing in a long line can be a trial in patience and fortitude or it can be an opportunity to use your imagination to create funny stories about the people

standing around you! Seize every opportunity to laugh! As a people who have experienced such tremendous trauma in our history, Jews have developed an incredible sense of humor which has aided in our ability to pick ourselves up and start again. I would hope so anyway. No people laugh at themselves quite as much as the Jewish people (and boy, do we have what to laugh at!) Unfortunately, people tend to wait for joy and humor to come to them, rather then pursuing it on their own. This can lead to long periods of time in which a person does not laugh at all. This is dangerous for all aspects of your life. Personal and professional relationships

will suffer if one cannot find joy. The best memories that my family shares are times when we laughed so hard that tears were pouring down our faces. My children don’t remember the hardships that our family faced, but the happy joy-filled hours that we spent laughing together. Try to laugh everyday. Rent a Marx Brother’s movie (especially if you’re a Millennial), tell a funny story, read a joke book, or call your mother-in-law (very funny right?!) You’ll see that you will be able to meet life’s challenges with greater dignity and ease. So keep smiling!! Rabbi Abba Perelmuter is the Lead Rabbi of Shul By The Shore in Long Beach, CA.

Macy’s Los Cerritos Partners With JFCS

Macy’s “Dress For Success” event brought smiles and tears to clients of JFCS as they used their gift cards. The timing of the event could not have been better to help with back-to-school necessities. (JFCS client photos used with permission)

During the month of August, Macy’s Los Cerritos spearheaded two projects to deepen their engagement with JFCS and its mission. On August 11, Macy’s invited 30 JFCS clients, comprised of women and children to the store for an exclusive “Dress for Success” event. The group gathered at the Alpert JCC for a ride in a chartered bus to Los Cerritos Center. Upon arrival, all were treated to lunch in the Penthouse, followed by a series of activities that included demonstrations on applying make-up

and eyebrow grooming, choosing wardrobe items that give a flattering look, and speakers on topics such as meditation and positive affirmations. Children were entertained with games and activities supervised by JFCS staff and volunteers. Each client was presented with a goodie bag full of cosmetic product samples and other treasures. The highlight of the day was the presentation of gift cards donated by Macy’s totaling $3000 for clients to spend in the store, presented by Rich Leduc, Vice President and Store

Manager. JFCS was also one of three local charities chosen for The Big Give Back Round-Up Campaign at Macy’s Los Cerritos. From August 1-15, shoppers were asked at check-out if they would like to round up their purchase to the next even dollar, up to $0.99. If the shopper agreed, they were directed to an interactive screen where the names of the three agencies appeared, and they could choose the one they wanted. JFCS will receive all donations made by being

chosen as the recipient, and the charity with the highest number of donations will have its donations matched by Macy’s up to $1,000. Results have not yet been reported. “At Macy’s, celebrating community is at the heart of our business and giving back is in our DNA. We’re grateful to help participate in amazing community programs that provide much needed assistance in our community,” said Rich Leduc, vice president store manager at Macy’s Los Cerritos. “Our Colleagues at Macy’s

Los Cerritos are proud to be partners with Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Long Beach, working together to help support much needed counseling programs benefitting women, children and adolescents as well as domestic violence education and prevention.” “It was an incredibly moving experience to be there on August 11 with our JFCS families and see the excitement on their faces when the goodie bags and gift cards were handed out. Macy’s has been an important partner for our RUNWAY events since its inception in 2014, and we are so grateful for their thoughtful and generous support to our clients and for the opportunity to participate in The Big Give Back RoundUp,” said Kathryn Miles, executive director. She noted that JFCS staff was able to attend a meeting of Macy’s employees to talk about the work of JFCS, adding that it was a very valuable outreach opportunity.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month By Pattie Davidson, JFCS Director of Development & Communications

Currently at JFCS, we are seeing a client we’ll call Cindy (not her real name). Cindy narrates her story in confusion. She married her husband 18 years ago when she was 27 years old. Cindy stated that she married her husband because he became her “whole world.” He would wine and dine her, take her to run errands or go shopping, and manage her social calendar. They married only nine months after meeting--he seemed to care so much for her. The first few years of their marriage appeared to be perfect--no

fights, always together, lots of fun. In fact, that’s how their relationship still remains. However, there is something about their relationship that makes Cindy uncomfortable. He often gives her the silent treatment when he gets upset. If she fails to attend to his every wish he makes her feel guilty. He often monitors her cell phone, texts, email, car mileage and Facebook account because “he just wants to make sure I’m okay,” and she no longer has friends because he has told her that “all your friends are good for nothing.”

Cindy often feels isolated, depressed, anxious and unsure of herself. Every October, there is great focus in all types of media on the issue of domestic violence. We think of those two words as a description for emotionally driven outbursts between significant others that culminate in one attacking the other. Digging deeper, we learn that there are many more layers and realities around this topic. As we see from Cindy’s story, abuse can take many forms, and it is possible that even

though it may never lead to physical violence, it can cause great psychological harm. Perpetrators need to feel in control of their victims. This need for control can have myriad manifestations, from verbally belittling the value and accomplishments of a child or spouse, to withholding expressions of love and affection, and in some cases, restricting financial resources. In the worst cases, victims may also fear retaliation from their abuser if they attempt to leave or sever the relationship. What seems

obvious from the outside is in fact not so simple, especially if children are involved. At JFCS we provide counseling services to help those in abusive relationships regain their voice, learn to set boundaries, and build healthy relationships based on mutual trust and respect. Call us for more details at (562) 427-7916.

Thursday night, we hosted a pool party and BBQ at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alevy, with Jewish students and friends, along with a handful of participants from our most recent 49ers to Israel trip-- it was a blast! The next night, we had a lovely final Shabbat of the year! Just a few days later, we celebrated Rosh Hashanah. Students were invited to attend services at Shul by the Shore and Temple Israel, and on Monday night, we all joined together at ChayaLeah’s house. We began with a learning circle in the backyard where we discussed themes of forgiveness, repentance and transformation followed by a Shofar blowing. We then shared a delicious holiday meal. The next morning, Bri led a Rosh Hashanahthemed yoga class where we further honored this introspective and spiritually charged time of the year.

Some of the student leaders that recently traveled to Israel with our Beach Hillel members came by to say “hi!” at our Back to School Pool Party and BBQ.

We are having a great time reconnecting with old friends and getting to know the new characters who will shape Beach Hillel’s future. As we enter into this new year, we are excited

to continue to grow and strengthen our community, supporting students however we can while spreading Jewish values and inspiring Jewish exploration. It’s going to be a great year!

Beach Hillel

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Alevy for hosting our Back to School Pool Party and BBQ! The students loved hanging out in the Alevys’ one of kind backyard!

JEWISH LIFE & CULTURE

Message from the Executive Director

Shlomit Jackson, sjackson@alpertjcc.org • (562) 426-7601 x1067

We just concluded celebrating the High Holidays. Each holiday has its unique importance, meaning and rituals. Of all of them, Sukkot has always had a special place for me. I could tell you that it’s due to me enjoying building and decorating my Sukkah – which I do; or, I can share that it is because I enjoy eating meals and inviting friends and family to join us in our Sukkah – which I also do. There is one more thing that has always stood out for me, it is the symbolism of the four plants that play a particularly important role during the blessings and celebrations of Sukkot, that continue to have significant importance to me. Together, they are referred to as the Four Species, and according to some Jewish traditions, each represents a different part of the body or type of person. Because of its shape, the Etrog, a citron fruit native to Israel that resembles a lemon, symbolizes the heart; the Lulav, a dried branch of a palm tree, symbolizes the spine; the Hadasim (myrtle) symbolize the eyes; and because of the red veins in their leaves, the Aravot (willow) represent the arteries. Some traditions are also based on the thought that taste represents learning, and smell represents good deeds. The Etrog has both taste and smell. The Lulav has taste but not fragrance. The myrtle has smell but no taste, and the willow has neither. Each represents a different type of person. Some have both learning and good deeds; some have one without the other; and some have neither. The message to me is clear – real community is found in their being bound together and brought under one roof. Each with its own traits and characteristics; each with its own likes and desires; and each with its own goals and involvements; and all are required to make up the four species – and all are important in making up a community. That diversity is not only important, but is essential in celebrating Sukkot – speaks to me of the importance and special atmosphere that diversity creates at the Alpert JCC. That our J, based on Jewish values and traditions, is open to, and warm and welcoming to all, is at the core of what makes the Alpert JCC special, unique, and able to thrive. The world around us is constantly changing, and there are places that what makes us different actually divides and separates people. My goal, dream, and prayer for the coming year is that the Alpert JCC will continue to be the place were differences draw people together, that tolerance and understanding are traits that flourish throughout our building and programs, and the we embrace the many difference and unique qualities that our members and guest bring to our community every day. Just as Sukkot would not be complete without one of the four species, so too the J would not be complete without each and every one of you. Thank you for being part of our community, thank you for make this an incredibly special place that is warm and welcoming to all, and thank you for making the Alpert JCC – Your Center for Life for so many.

The Hebrew Academy Celebrates Sukkot

Students from all grades performing the origins of Sukkot.

Parents and students were excited to celebrate together the Sukkot Holiday at the Hebrew Academy this month. Over a hundred students gathered to showcase their knowledge of the holiday through song, dance and performances. The students were also excited to show off their handmade Sukkahs and how they used their engineering and science skills, along with their artistic talents to decorate them. Parents, teachers, and guests all enjoyed the student performances in both English and Hebrew together with an enjoyable breakfast feast in the Sukkah. Everyone ate their fill and ended

the morning with a special entertainment program to thank the kids for their hard work. Sukkot is a joyful holiday and each year the Hebrew Academy looks forward to celebrate it with our extended family. We love using this fun and meaningful holiday to bring together our families. In the beautiful outdoor setting, the school is able to illustrate how the dual learning program goes hand in hand with the STREAM initiative and providing kids with experiential learning.
