FEATURE STORY

A Tribute to Merv Lemmerman

Merv Lemmerman (June 23, 1928 - August 8, 2016). Zichrono Livracha - May his memory be a blessing.

Mervin “Merv” Lemmerman passed away on August 8th, 2016. Merv touched the lives of so many in his Jewish communal work. He served as Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach Beach & West Orange County, Director of Suburban Services to the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, and Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center of Long Beach. Merv earned his Master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University. Merv also graduated from the doctoral program at Hebrew Union College and received a Principal’s Certification from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. Merv served as Director of Education at Temple Israel, working alongside Rabbi Wolli Kaelter. Together he and Rabbi Kaelter were the moving force in the formation of Camp Komaroff.

Author of five papers on leadership, supervising, older adult services and community planning, Merv received numerous awards and honors, including the Educator of the Year Award of the Western Association of Temple Educators in 1963, and President of the Long Beach Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Beloved husband of Sydelle Lemmerman (of blessed memory), father of Alan & Barbara Lemmerman, David & Pat Lemmerman, Dan & Debbie Lemmerman, brother of Evelyn Kruger, brother of Seymour & Rose Lemmerman, and loving partner of Donna Robitaille. Merv is also survived by his granchildren and greatgrandchildren, Nathan & Stephanie Lemmerman and their daughters Sophie and Sabrina, Shaina & Andrew Panos and their children Jack and Maia, Katie Lemmerman & her fiancé Chris Burgstaller, Jake Lemmerman, Danielle & Matt Foster and their daughter Avery, Sarah Lemmerman, Laura & Field Turner, Ryan & Anna Blank and their son Cameron, and Steven Lemmerman & his partner Stuart Parlier.

Merv’s son, David Lemmerman, had this to say about his father, “For everyone who worked with our father or knew him on a personal level, you realize how words fail us in expressing just how wonderful of a man he was. Known to us as the great listener, he set an example we feel will be impossible to live up to. Our father was hopeful more individuals would come to realize the philosophy by which he lived his life: Always be grateful for what you do have, then, do your best to provide for those less fortunate.”

Your Happiness Starts Here By Rabbi Shmuel Marcus

The holiday of Sukkot, also known as the “Time of our Rejoicing,” is one of the joyous days on the Rabbi Shmuel Jewish calendar. Marcus But is it really that easy to be happy? For anyone who has yet to master that elusive title of being a happy camper, get ready, for you’re happiness starts here. So I need to be up front about this... If you’re looking for pure happiness and a carefree life, it may not be found here, or anywhere for that matter. Even the famous psychologist Viktor Frankle said, “It is the very pursuit of happiness that thwarts happiness.” But isn’t it a mitzvah to be happy? Doesn’t the Code of Jewish Law require one to serve G-d with joy? So, here is where we have to get technical and split

hairs on the differences between being “Happy” and “Rejoicing.” For example “I’m happy I have a roof over my head” vs. “I rejoice over building a Jewish home.” We invite friends to “rejoice” at our wedding, but we use the word “happy” to describe the feeling we get from the wedding hall giving us a great price. I’m sure people who are happy tend to rejoice and people that are rejoicing are definitely happy, so what difference does it make what word we use? The difference is fundamental because they are very different when it comes to control: You can force yourself to rejoice, but you can’t force yourself to be happy. Perhaps, this answers why Judaism commands us to rejoice, but doesn’t command us to be happy. If happiness is someone with a healthy lifestyle who rides a bicycle to work and loves eating quinoa and

broccoli, then rejoicing would be someone who doesn’t have a healthy lifestyle but is at the gym on a stationary bike and struggling with a diet of quinoa and broccoli. The actions look the same, but the impetus for the motions is really what defines them. Have you ever wondered why some wealthy people who seem to have everything are still not happy? You can always find something to complain about, and it’s true, there is always something that could be better. The Mishna teaches us “Who is a happy person? One who is happy with his lot.” On Sukkot, we are commanded to rejoice. The question still remains “how do you rejoice if you’re not happy?” A similar question is posed in relation to the commandment to love G-d, for how can the Torah command us on matters of the heart? Either you love avocado

or you don’t love avocado. You can easily command your subjects to eat avocado but you cannot command them to love it. Therefore, in order to answer this dilemma, Jewish Law sees the commandment to love G-d as the commandment to read about G-d, to study and educate oneself on the topics that bring one to actually love G-d. Clearly, we can focus on the joys of leaving Egypt and becoming the recipients of the world’s vital mission of the Torah. We can fill a glass with wine and stand with our family and recite all the blessings we have in our life. We can join the Simchat Torah dancing by essentially forcing our bodies to rejoice, and slowly, we discover a happy soul. Rabbi Shmuel Marcus is the Director of Chabad of Los Alamitos. He and his wife Bluma run the Chabad House in Rossmoor, CA and the Hebrew High program.

Staff Spotlight

Message from the Executive Director

I hope you all had a wonderful summer! We had a great summer here at the J with so much going on: Summer of Fun events at the pool, summer camp, Jewish classes, the ECE program, swimming lessons, and so much more! I hope you were able to come and be a part of it! I just returned from JCCA Maccabi games in Stamford, Connecticut and our 17 athletes, artists, and coaches had an incredible time as part of an almost 2,000 person-strong JCC Maccabi and ArtsFest experience! We look forward to bringing a larger delegation next year in Miami!!! Although our Summer of Fun has come to a close, we are already gearing up for a wonderful fall season here at the J! Our “Ethical Life” series continues and if you missed it this time around, be sure to look for Session 2 in November. And back by popular demand are the 92Y broadcasts. The first one is on Tuesday, September 3, at 7pm, and will be US Foreign Policy and the 2016 Election. Four of America’s foreign policy experts explore crucial issues that our next President must face. With the election right around the corner, this should prove to be thought provoking! The very next morning, Wednesday, September 14, at 9:15am, Chaya Leah Sufrin will be giving a free “coffee talk” at 9:15 to discuss anything and everything you want to know about the High Holidays. If you haven’t yet met Chaya Leah or come to one of her classes, you are in for a treat. She is knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor! Also in preparation for the High Holidays (which begin Erev Rosh Hashanah on October 2), Shlomit Jackson will be at Lazy Acres again on Tuesday, September 27, from 11am1pm for a tasting of different varieties of apples and kosher honey. If you’re already thinking about Chanukah (and who isn’t?), there will be a vendor fair in the Promenade from Monday, September 19 to Thursday, September 22. And finally, I would like to extend an invitation to attend our Annual Meeting on Sunday, September 25, at 10am. We’ll welcome our 2016-2017 Board Members and recognize our outstanding volunteers, center supporters and long-term employees. You’ll also enjoy a fabulous brunch generously donated by Katella Deli. We look forward to seeing you there! RSVP to Sandra Oliva at (562) 426-7601, x1414. What we do here each and every day could not be possible without our incredible members, our caring and hardworking staff, our passionate and dedicated board members, our valuable community partners, and our generous donors and supporters. Thank you to all of you who help us be Your Center For Life.

Susan Paletz

Celebrating 25 years!

Susan Paletz grew up at the Long Beach JCC. She was involved with teen programs, summer stock (she made her debut as a bird), and she was extremely active in BBYO (BBG). In college, she went to Chapman University’s Semester at Sea, a phenomenal experience traveling around the world for seven months. This experience, Susan explains, is “what really shaped me and motivated me to get involved with a non-profit. Seeing different cultures and different challenges that people around the world were facing really made an impression on me and I wanted to give back.” Susan graduated from San Diego State with a B.A. in Psychology, and she took graduate classes in Education at Cal State Long Beach. Susan met her husband Mark at a Jewish singles dance in San Diego, and they have been married for 33 years. They have two sons, Jeffrey and Michael, who spent their formative years at the JCC in preschool through teen programming. Susan started at the J as a teacher in the preschool. She was only there for a year when Lynne Rosenstein (former Assistant Director) offered her the position as the Camp Director. She was in that position for 10 years, from 1992-2002. She then became the Adult Director and was in that position until 2007 when she moved into her current position as the Director of Program Development and Community Engagement. This September marks her 25th year at the J!! “It’s been the best job and the best experience because it’s not just a job—it’s my life,” says Susan. “It’s a community that I feel so much passion for. I love meeting all the new people that come through the door. I like helping staff and supervising them and helping them grow into their positions. I enjoy all the programming, but some of my all-time favorite programs, are the Women’s Weekend and the Adult trips. The Israel/Poland trip was life-changing and set me on a new course here at the JCC as far as Holocaust education and our connections to Israel. “I also enjoy working with staff in the Youth and Teen Department and looking into new programs and opportunities for the Adult Department. I’m particularly passionate about how to engage adults of all ages with the JCC and each other. I definitely want to see more Israel trips for adults and families to help connect people living here in California to Israel. It’s such an amazing country. “One of the many reasons I have stayed at the J for so many years is because of the wonderful staff. I have worked with Jeffrey Rips for over 20 years in the many positions we have both had over the years. I appreciate the collaboration that Jeffrey and I share in building Jewish life and culture for the Long Beach community. I have built lifelong friendships with people here. I come to work every day and feel like I am coming to my second home. I can’t imagine working anywhere else.” Thank you, Susan, for everything you have done for the Alpert Jewish Community Center. Your dedication and love for this wonderful place shines through in everything that you do. - Interview by Erika Hillinger

JFCS + NYC = Fabulous!

Lucky drawing winner Ann Martin loves this Valentino jacket in the Elle Magazine fashion closet.

On the evening of September 15th at RUNWAY: The Art of Design, the ticket of one lucky winner and a guest will be drawn for a trip to New York for a visit to Hearst Magazines and Marie Claire, one of the world’s leading fashion and beauty magazines, published in over 35 countries and in 5 languages. The lucky winners will be greeted by the staff of Hearst Magazines and will tour the Good Housekeeping Institute testing laboratory and the creation floor of

Marie Claire. Lunch in the Hearst cafeteria is included, as is a visit to the Marie Claire fashion closet—just like in the movie “The Devil Wears Prada”. Round trip airfare for two via Southwest Airlines and two nights’ hotel accommodations are included in the prize. Ann Martin, winner of the drawing last year, says, “Amazing! Awesome! Wonderful! Unforgettable! Exciting! Just a few superlatives that describe my recent “NYC Experience”. It began with a purchase of a ticket for a drawing I never expected to win, but I knew the proceeds were going to a cause that was dear to my heart.” You can read Ann’s entire story at jfcsrunway.com/experience. Tickets are $100 each and only 100 of them will be sold. They are available in advance online at jfcsrunway.com, or by calling JFCS at (562) 427-7916. You need not be present to win. When they are gone, they’re gone, so act now!

You… Walking the Runway For a Great Cause

Debbie Feldman models a beautiful outfit at RUNWAY 2014.

Is being a model on the runway at New York Fashion Week one of your “bucket list” desires? You can achieve the next best thing by donating $500 for JFCS’ programs and services at RUNWAY: The Art of Design. As many as three women will be accepted to be runway models during the Fall fashion preview segment of the program. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity, “ says Wendy Manasse, Chief Visionary of RUNWAY. “We will do your hair and make-up, put you in the most flattering Fall fashions from Macy’s, and give you a few “walking” lessons. Giving back and having the ultimate fashion experience—it doesn’t get any better”, she added. Two years ago at RUNWAY: The Beauty of Helping Others, Debbie Feldman made a generous gift to JFCS and walked the runway. She says, “It was so much fun to be behind the scenes getting my hair and make-up done. The outfit I modeled looked incredible on me and it was amazing to be up on the runway, looking out at friends and family. It’s really the chance of a lifetime for anyone who loves fashion to have this monumental experience while helping those in our community who need an outstretched hand.” To get started, please call Pattie Davidson at (562) 427-7916 ext. 235.

Student Designs Unveiled at RUNWAY

RUNWAY: The Art of Design will feature Fall fashions from Macy’s, as well as the creations by student designers from local colleges.

Garments created by student designers from the fashion design and merchandising programs of Long Beach City College

and Cal State Long Beach are this year’s special feature at RUNWAY: The Art of Design, a fundraiser for JFCS of Long Beach/West Orange County, set to unfold at 5:30.p.m. on September 15th in the Amy and Richard Lipeles Auditorium at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Jewish Federation Weinberg Campus. The unique blend of fashion trends with a focus this year on the creations of aspiring designers, coupled with helping those who need professional, yet affordable assistance, makes for an event not to be missed. “We are very excited to

work with both Cal State Long Beach and Long Beach City College’s fashion design programs. Our intent is to showcase the creativity of these young designers in a setting that matches the spirit of New York Fashion Week. Having professional models walk the runway in garments created by the next generation of fashion designers will make the event very special for the audience, as well as the designers. These students could be designing the next garments you see at Macy’s. They have amazing talent and dreams and RUNWAY

will give the community a chance to meet them,” said Chief Visionary Wendy Manasse, who with her husband David Wiese, underwrites the expenses of the fundraiser. Returning to the event this year is a segment where professional models will walk the runway wearing the latest Fall fashion trends from Macy’s. “At past RUNWAY events we’ve been asked about purchasing clothing, so this year we will provide attendees with all the information they need to purchase the items they’ll see on our amazing

models,” added Manasse. The evening will begin with a reception featuring innovative salad creations and a signature cocktail. Event tickets are $40 per person in advance, $60 at the door if still available, and are on sale online at jfcsrunway.com, or by phone at (562) 427-7916. A limited number of VIP tickets will be available for $75, and these tickets include preferred seating and an exclusive tote bag. Sponsorships for the event are still available, starting at $250. 5 Stars to Hebrew Academy Preschool that define high quality early care and education. Early learning programs are assessed according to a rating matrix and sites are assigned a rating between 1-5 stars. The Star Rating is used to measure the following core areas:

Hebrew Academy is proud to have received the highest rating from the Orange County Department of Education for 2016. Duing a process that took 2

years, the result was a 5 star rating overall for the Hebrew Academy preschool. The quality rating and improvement system (QRIS) is a shared set of standards

who has more than 25 years of experience in early childhood. Chanie says the reason why she chose to join the QRIS program is because “it’s beneficial to use an outside agency to observe, evaluate and give an input to the future of the school. This program is all about giving the parents the assurance that their children are better prepared for kindergarten and have the right learning skills and readiness to succeed in their life journey.” For more information Leading the way is about our program and Hebrew Academy’s Preschool rating, visit our website at Director, Chanie Perelmuter, hebrewacademypreschool.org. development through high quality interactions, intentional planning, and supportive environments? This is one huge celebration.”

My Little Gan The Hebrew Academy is pleased to announce the opening of a full-time Jewish Infant and Toddler Day Care Center, which opened on August 31st. The new program will serve young children between the ages of six weeks to 2 years old and is fully licensed by the California Department of Social Services. Preschool Director Chanie Perelmuter said, “I am excited in pioneering a high-quality infant and toddler care that

will be the first Jewish infant program in our area. I have researched similar programs in other locations and plan to introduce the best features of their programs.” The Infant Center is housed on the beautiful Hebrew Academy 11-acre campus. This new program will enhance our five-star rated early childhood program that has been the hallmark of The Hebrew Academy. The caregivers at the new Infant Center have

been trained in the unique needs of an infant center that include the loving and nurturing of young children, while providing a carefully designed environment for growth and development socially, emotionally and physically. The highly educated teaching staff, low ratio of children to caregiver, developmentally appropriate curriculum, and secure facility, all contribute to the hopes that you and your child will feel ‘at home’.

Our Infant Center’s philosophy is that each child is unique and therefore deserves individual attention and care. The Hebrew Academy incorporates the best practices from childcentered, teacher-directed, project-based, theme-based, emergent curriculum, and group collaboration that are guided by Jewish values and culture. The kids will celebrate Jewish holidays with their families throughout the year. Jewish values

reflect the school’s identity and provide a framework for the education that teaches students and molds relationships of culture that will last a lifetime. The goal is to help parents and children have the most comprehensive program that is offered and feel like our institution is ‘a home away from home.’ Contact Chanie Perelmuter for additional information at hebrewacademypreschool.org or (714) 898-0051 ext. 204.
