FEATURE STORY
A New Year . . . A New Path By Danny Levy, Director of Development
It’s a new year. Time to refresh, time to reflect, time to atone, time to recharge, time to sing from the hills (ok, maybe not that part, especially my voice). It is also time for us to celebrate 70 years of the Jewish Federation, beginning next month. As I’m digging through old Chronicles and other archives, I am besieged with stories of numerous community needs, numerous Israel needs, numerous immigrant needs, and thus numerous fund raising needs. In comparison, we are not that different than October of 1948 or the personalized messages shown here from 1968. Their messages were a bit stronger, for the times, perhaps, but still with good intention of providing tikkun olam and tzedakah. And over the history of the Jewish people, you could probably find a similar theme.
1968 New Year’s Message from Jewish Community Federation President, Revan Komaroff
It’s who we are. We look out for those we know and those we don’t. We provide, we educate and continue the stories of our ancestors, updated for our ‘modern’ times. We struggle, we survive. We mistreat people, we atone. The thing is, with ‘need’, it doesn’t go away. It’s always there, there is no light at the end of the tunnel, and there is no end to our story. That is not to say it’s all bad or sad need. We can rejoice in the happiness of teaching our traditions, sharing our stories of success and having community. We can feel good for helping others. We can feel good that we are a community that cares.
1968 New Year’s Message from Jewish Community Federation Honorary President, Irving Schneider
As the Federation and Jewish Community Foundation find their way in a year-long process of becoming one complete agency and discover new and exciting ways to raise funds and grant monies out, we can look to our 70 year history to light the path. Just as we do for the High Holy Days, bringing in the sweet new year, asking to be written in the book of life, and sealed with forgiveness – we ask that you remember Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation when you begin to think of how you want to sing from the hills for those that cannot, and spread the stories of the Jewish people. We have many ways to help you satisfy your charitable giving. Shanah Tovah.
1968 New Year’s Message from Emanuel Gyler, Chairman of United Jewish Welfare Fund

A Full Year Ahead By Danny Levy, Director of Development
We will soon share the multitudes of all that we have accomplished over our 70 years. For now, though, the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation have a full year planned ahead with many programs and events to support our Jewish community. We begin 5779 with the kick-off to our 2019 Annual Campaign, the Lentzner Family Major Gifts Brunch, on Sunday November 4, 2018, at a private home. The Lentzner family graciously hosts this event each year, as a time to thank the community’s major donors and provide a glimpse into all that the Federation and Foundation are doing. The brunch also offers an excellent speaker to share thoughts on Israel and its relationship to the United States. This year the speaker is Jeff Goldman, an Emmy winning Producer and Reporter for CBS News and the PBS NewsHour. It only takes an individual gift of $5,000 or a family gift of $10,000 to attend.

Scene from An Israeli Love Story
Next we have Opening Night, which will take place on Wednesday November 7, 2018. This is a spectacular opening to our Annual Campaign, and as well to the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival. Federation sponsors the first night of the Film Festival with a dessert reception and a screening of “An Israeli Love Story”. Based on the true story of theatre director and actress Pnina Gary, the film tells a passionate story of love and independence. Set in prestate Palestine, young lovers are torn between their love for one another and where they see their own futures in the Jewish state. The reception and screening are free to anyone who makes a minimum gift of $18 to the 2019 Annual Campaign. This is followed by our mega phone-a-thon: Super Sunday on December 2, 2018. This takes an army

of volunteer phone callers as we try to reach our entire community to raise the much needed funds for the 2019 Annual Campaign. We are a larger than we think Jewish community, and it takes a lot of work to reach each and every one. We know that the monies we raise help the community in many ways, from preschoolers, to seniors, to college students, to those in need, and even to those who desire more Jewish connection. But not everyone knows this. This phone-a-thon is way to help share all that we do with the donations we are asking for. You might not think that $18, or $54 would help – well it does. Especially the more people participate with gifts. Men’s Philanthropy will then be presenting Above & Beyond on Thursday February 7, 2019. This is an evening for the men in our community to come together

Above & Beyond is followed by Women’s Philanthropy presenting The Arlene Solomon Visions Dinner on Thursday March 14, 2019. This event for women in our community has been going strong for over 20 years. In addition to helping support the 2019 Annual Campaign, this will be as exciting and wonderful as in years past. We ask only for a minimum gift to the campaign of $180. Details to follow. Our Legacy Brunch will take place on Sunday April 7, 2019. This is an opportunity for us to thank all of the donors that have decided it was important to
them to make sure there is always a strong Jewish community here. It is this future planning that will allow for us to sustain a Jewish way of life for many generations to come. There will be a presentation from a recipient of one of the grants we give out, to share their experience. Ending the year on Sunday June 23, 2019 is a soon to be revealed event for one and all. We will say goodbye, say hello, have an introduction, all while enjoying incredible visuals, sounds, foods, and drinks.
Making an Impact: Funds Serving the Community By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments and Community Development
One day, while walking along the road, Honi saw a man planting a carob tree and said to him,“Since a carob tree does not bear fruit for seventy years, are you certain of living so long as to eat the fruit of the tree you are planting?” The man replied, “I found the world provided with carob trees because my ancestors planted them for me. I am planting them now for my children.” Taanit 23a Jewish Tradition teaches that one of our key duties is to make the world a better place for future generations. The quote above describes the essence of the work of the Jewish Community Foundation, which is to “Ensure the Future.” Many of our community members have left funds and many more have promised to leave bequests that will serve our entire Jewish Community. The chart on this page lists some examples of funds that have been established at the Jewish Community Foundation for Jewish Educational Experiences, Israel Experiences, Jews in Need, Community Security, Leadership Development, Older Adults, Programs and Services for all of our community agencies and much more. Some of the Named Funds are established during a donor’s lifetime with a minimum initial contribution $10,000 (corpus). These contributions can be made with a gift of cash or appreciated assets. Other funds are established as a bequest from a will or trust.
If you already have a will or trust, you can arrange a charitable bequest with a simple amendment or codicil. You can specify a specific asset, percentage of your estate or a fixed dollar amount that you want to leave to the organizations that you care about. The Foundation can provide you with sample language. The Foundation invests the corpus in accordance with its investment guidelines. Additional contributions, of any amount, may be made to these funds by any donor. The Funds receive a yearly distribution in accordance with payout guidelines of the Foundation and this yearly payout is distributed based on the donor’s wishes set forth in their Fund Agreement. In the case of Family Funds, a process is set up to involve family members in the making decisions each year on the distribution of the funds. Some fund holders establish funds for a particular agency or organization, to endow their annual campaign gift, or for a specific population or field of interest. When you choose to leave a bequest through the Jewish Community Foundation, you create a permanent legacy that will benefit the community for generations to come. The possibilities for helping ensure the future are endless. If you would like more information on how to contribute to one of the already established funds or to open a new Fund, please call Sharon Kenigsberg at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008.

Moving Into The New Year By Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfarb
Deborah, my wife, and I recently sold our house of fifteen years, moving from our townhouse condominium to a “detached Rabbi Dr. house,” as they Mark Goldfarb say... across the pond. In addition to all the excitement of moving, boxing up everything, finding/ purchasing boxes for all the myriad of items, came the “culling” of things that multiplied during 15 years of residence! Previously, job opportunities and new positions created a rhythm of moving every five years. There is a natural “thinning” of one’s possessions during the moving process and every five years, we would engage in that thinning of the herd, resulting in multiple trips to Goodwill, or Habitat for Humanity, or other organizations that repurposed people’s no longer wanted items. Not only did we feel good about providing useful items for others, but the
process forced us to prioritize our possessions. What once seemed like a necessity to enhance the aesthetics of our home, with the perspective of moving and prioritizing, now seemed like a trivial chotchkie that made us question why we ever bought it in the first place! However, living in our former home for 15 years brought an end to that culling necessity and, needless to say, during the past 15 years a number of stowed and forgotten household items engaged in a prolific act of procreation! Many times, we would look at each other and exclaim, “when did we get this?” “Why did we purchase this?” And more importantly, “do I still want this?” Leaving us to conclude that some of the items created offspring during the past 15 years. For this move, the number of trips to Goodwill, Habitat, etc., multiplied exponentially from our last move. As we filled each box, we weighed the significance, relevance, and importance of the items. Will there be room in the new house
for this? Do we really want to schlep this thing? Vases, coffee cups, ceramic pieces, framed art — not to mention tee-shirts — were all examined, appraised and, in many cases, culled from the pack. Most importantly, now having settled into our new home, those items that once seemed so significant and so important to the aesthetics of our home, are not even missed in our new domicile. The coffee cups I once so enjoyed drinking coffee from, giggling at the embossed comic, or favorite tee-shirt I would wear for workouts, or the vases and pictures that once decorated our walls, are no longer a part of how we live. Those items, once valued, prized, and prominent are hopefully bringing such feelings to others. We certainly appreciated, benefited from, and used them in our lives, but now we moved on — literally. Which brings me to the coming Yamim Noraim, Days of Awe/High Holy Days. As we prepare to move into 5779, I would like to suggest that we view Rosh Hashanah
as exactly that — a move into a new year. Let us take the time to weigh the significance, relevance, and importance of the “items” we packed away in the storage boxes of our minds. May we have the strength and the courage to ask ourselves the hard questions about what we stored in those nooks and crannies of our memories: why did I choose to remember this? Is this what I truly want to remember? How has schlepping this all these years affected me and how I treat those around me? Do I want this to be a part of me? May we all have the strength and courage to cull the unwanted, unneeded, and unnecessary items from Rosh Hashanah packing. L’Shalom & L’Shanah Tovah u’Mitukah! ~ Mark Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfarb is the rabbi of Temple Beth Ohr. He is also a member of Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

Tips to Ease Your Child into the New School Year By Jodie Shurtleff, MFT Trainee and Krystyna Soch, MFT Trainee
Every school-age child or adolescent faces change this time of year. Whether a child is just matriculating to the next grade or starting at a new school, there is potential for them to feel anxious. Jodie Shurtleff and Krystyna Soch, JFCS clinicians who work with children, have some suggestions to help parents help their children. Transitioning to a new school can be an overwhelming and scary experience for many
children. Whether your family has moved or your child is starting a new school for any number of other reasons, there are steps you can take help ease the stress and anxiety over the transition. First, take your child to their new school. Explore the campus with them, help them find their classroom or classes, and introduce them to their teacher or principal. This will help your child feel confident about where they need to go and who their
new teachers will be. Second, talk it out with your child. Read books with them about starting a new school or talk openly about what they are excited or worried about with regard to starting at a new school or in a new class. The way you speak to your child about their new school or class will help them shape their view of it, so speak with confidence about their ability to handle changes and challenges. Third, look for ways to
get involved as a parent. Join the PTA or volunteer to chaperone a field trip. Fourth, replicate or create a “first day of school” tradition. Maybe you make your child’s favorite breakfast or take them to the park after school. Whatever your choice, the tradition itself should be meaningful to your child. By having something that feels familiar or something they can look forward to, you can provide some extra support
and minimize some of the shock that can happen with starting a new school or grade. As the parent, prepare and equip yourself for this transition. Be aware that your child may be more quiet than normal or may have more of an attitude. Keep your expectations of their behavior, but remember that they are adjusting. By implementing some of these tips, you can help your child have a successful transition to their new school.
or absence because of incarceration. Our agreements with these three entities are feefor-service arrangements, where fees cover the costs associated with providing the services. In the case of Downey USD, our services have been increased per their request over the last three years because they have seen positive outcomes for many of the children. The principal of Los Alamitos
Elementary school also increased the number of hours per week that we provide for their students for the upcoming school year. It is of paramount importance that children have the tools to cope with adversity in their lives at an early age, and JFCS believes that early intervention is key to building a strong foundation for their future mental health.
JFCS Makes Big Impact in Schools Kathryn Miles
Executive Director, Jewish Family & Children’s Service
Summer is waning, and with that, school bells are ringing in districts all over Southern California. JFCS is also ready for action as we serve every school in the Downey Unified School District—21 campuses—with counselors who supplement
the work of the school counseling staff so that more children can be helped. We also serve Los Alamitos Elementary School and The Hebrew Academy by providing onsite counselors. What does our staff do, and how does this work? Through this evidence-based program, classroom teachers identify students who may be struggling academically, dealing with a challenging issue at home, or who may

be acting out in a disruptive way. Our counselors meet with the students either individually or, at the elementary school level, in small groups. Some of the causes of behavioral issues are feelings of uncertainty around parents’ separation or divorce, anxiety because of the threat of deportation of parents and family members in their circles of support, or feelings of loss due to the death of a family member

for them to ask questions, honor complexity, and engage deeply with what it means to be a Jew in today’s world. In addition to coordinating our immersive learning opportunities and engaging students in the Taglit Birthright experience, Shir will be available for anybody who would like to grab coffee and discuss Israel. Shir can be reached at Shir@beachhillel.org

JEWISH LIFE & CULTURE
Message from the Executive Director I hope you all had a wonderful summer! We had a great summer here at the J, with so much going on: Summer of Fun events at the pool, Camp Komaroff, the new Swim for Life swim program, Big Band concerts, Barbara Alpert Chorus, and so much more! I hope you were able to come and be a part of it! We also just completed hosting the 2018 JCC Maccabi ArtsFest program where over 100 visiting artists from around the country joined us here in Long Beach for an incredible week that culminated with a Final Showcase at Wilson High School. It was an honor our community to host and we are all so appreciative of the overwhelming support we received from the community in the way of volunteering, hosting visiting teens, making donations and much much more. In addition, we had 44 over our local teens as part of our delegation, 13 artists and 31 athletes (many who won medals) and I want to congratulate all of them for participating in this year’s JCC Maccabi Games and ArtsFest and look forward to seeing them as part of our delegation in 2019. Be sure to see the exciting photos in the ArtsFest section of Around the J!

Soccer Season Begins! The fall soccer season is quickly approaching at the Hebrew Academy! Each Sunday, the school partners with American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) to host children from all over Orange County to compete on three soccer fields. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to meet and learn from all types of kids from the surrounding area. Parents appreciate the many benefits to playing soccer. It builds stamina, improves coordinations, and strengthens motor skills. It also encourages teamwork, boosts self confidence, and increases concentration. When a child learns soccer, they are also learning how to work together in a team environment for a shared goal. They must constantly communicate with others and play to each other’s strengths to have a successful team. The drive to win builds on friendly competition to help motivate the children. By encouraging teamwork, social skills, and work ethic, soccer can relate to a child’s

Dr. Jason Lustig
The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is pleased to open its Fall Lecture Series with a talk by Dr. Jason Lustig. He will speak 7:30 pm, Thursday evening, September 27th, at the Alpert JCC on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus (3801 E. Willow St., Long Beach, CA 90815). How does memory and history become tied up in material objects? That question is at the heart of Dr. Lustig’s research into the fate of Jewish archives and looted art after the Holocaust.
With so many communities destroyed, what should happen to their cultural treasures: their torah scrolls, their libraries, their art, and their archives? Dr. Lustig’s talk will examine these questions in a way to help us think through the nature of memory in contemporary Jewish culture. Dr. Lustig is currently a Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University’s Center for Jewish Studies, and he received his Ph.D. in History from UCLA in 2017. His research and teaching focuses on intellectual history, historiography, and the history of archives. He is also the host and creator of the Jewish History Matters podcast. Like all Jewish Studies talks, it is free and open to the public. For information on this talk or fall semester events, email Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger, Jeffrey.Blutinger@csulb.edu
