editor’s Hello Fabulous Reader,

I am extremely excited about the September issue of JEZ Magazine. I know the content of the magazine will keep you engaged. With the world constantly evolving in more ways than one, I realized that I needed to amp up the online component of the magazine. In order to execute my new initiative, I bought in new editors to JEZ Magazine. Celebrity Stylist and former cast member of America’s Next Top Model and Fashion Consultant to Tyra Banks, Ty-Ron Mayes, is a brilliant stylist and editor. He has overseen the styling and copy for this issue and has graciously accepted my invitation to serve as Fashion Editor at Large. In addition, I now have the incredibly talented make-up artist, Renee Garnes, who has an extensive roster including: Naomi Campbell and Mariah Carey. Garnes serves as my new Beauty Editor. My team and I have been diligently working in order to make the September issue one to remember. With that being said, our goal is to continue to create content that is informative and entertaining online, as well as, in print. We are all beautiful in extraordinary ways and at times we need to be reminded to love ourselves and to love one another. I wanted to allow people to feel good about themselves and the skin that they are in. Therefore, the overall theme of this issue is Global Beauty. And, exactly what does that mean? Well, everyone is beautiful in their own way. And the best way to express that was to create an issue that has no boundaries. You will discover that true beauty is found in different colors, different ages and different genders. Whether it’s a May / December relationship, a biracial love story, a transgendered actress finding that the world has embraced her or the actress who so boldly stated, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful”, making her triumphant comeback, embracing

letter each and every unique beauty attributes became the driving force behind this issue. With that, the feel good theme is injected into every beautiful page. There’s nothing more beautiful than philanthropy. So, while we focused on exterior beauty, I wanted to bring awareness to two phenomenal organizations that help people in need. Together1heart educates and raises awareness in the fight against sex trafficking (on OCT 1 at Tao Downtown NYC, there will be a Gala IF YOU CAN COME AND JOIN THE THE FIGHT WOULD BE GREAT). Save the Children provides support to the most isolated and underserved children in rural America. Together with JEZ Magazine, we are going to raise money to help those who’s lives have been devastated in Puerto Rico. On November 14, 2018, JEZ Magazine will host THE SPOTLIGHT (Fundraiser at Waterside North Bergen, NJ 07047) which, will serve as a fundraiser that allow us to collect funds for the less fortunate. We can each make a difference by raising awareness and funds for both of these global crisis. To learn more about these organizations or to donate to our charity, please visit jezmagazine.com for more information. I have poured my heart into this September issue. The Global Beauty issue is full of love, acceptance and philanthropy; as we continue to move in a direction towards loving ourselves and our neighbors, now, we can spread that love on a global scale! God Bless, Ezequiel De La Rosa Editor –in- Chief

O

ne of my very first memories

The Spotlight Gala event takes place September 17, 2018, in partnership with Save The Children and benefits its Hurricane Maria Relief Fund. After the hurricane, six out of ten Puerto Rican children live in poverty. One in four schools had closed. These kids are in dire need of psychological and emotional support. They need you in their corner.

is of sitting in my Abuela Alicia’s tiny tenement apartment in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I was five years old and the roar of the highway just outside her window was a soundtrack to her morning routine. The cars honked angrily as she prepared her Café Colao the same way she had ten thousand times before. I would watch, mesmerized, as she held the well-worn mesh strainer over her cup and let the coffee slowly drip out.

To get you in the fighting spirit, here is a recipe straight from my Abuela’s kitchen. It is the one she started her morning with and the one that always gives me hope for a better day. Here is her recipe for Café Colao.

Abuela would take these moments to talk to me about some of the challenges that I would face in life. The biggest of which would be surviving El Cuco, Puerto Rico’s version of the boogeyman. He is a snarling, shapeless monster that runs rampant through the streets snatching up children and eating them alive. According to my Abuela, he lived in the hallway outside her apartment.

I’ll see you at the fundraiser on November 14, 2018 at Waterside, North Bergan, NJ 7PM to 11pm. If you can’t make it, I hope you will donate online at: jezmagazine.com and click donate now!

“You must never go out there without my permission. You’d be a tasty treat for El Cuco.” I stared at my reflection in the toaster terrified.

Tools mesh strainer or colador

My Abuela let out a deep, throaty laugh. “Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.”

Ingredients 1 tablespoon Yaucono Puerto Rican Coffee 1 cup boiling water

It would take me years to realize El Cuco wasn’t waiting outside my grandmother’s door ready to eat me up and many more still to learn the lesson she wanted to teach me; life is hard and you always need someone in your corner. El Cuco comes in many shapes and forms. On September 20, 2017, he came to Puerto Rico as a Category 4 Hurricane named Maria.

Directions Place a tablespoon of your favorite brand of coffee into a mesh strainer or colador. Hold the strainer over an empty coffee cup. Pour 1 cup of hot water into the strainer little by little, allowing it to slowly drip into your coffee cup. Strain the coffee through the grounds a second time to develop a deeper flavor. You can drink your coffee black like my Abuela, but I prefer to stir in a tablespoon of condensed milk for the mother of all wake-up calls.

The storm swallowed the island whole, causing $100 billion in damages and an almost year long blackout; the longest in US history. It’s estimated 4,645 people died in the hurricane and its aftermath. One of them was my Abuela Alicia. She spent her last weeks fighting cancer without power or running water. I can’t bring her back. But, I can do my part to help bring my island back and I need your help.

Kevyn

The

Aucoin Experience

by Ty-Ron Mayes

BEAUTY NOTE: WE ARE LIVING FOR THE NEW COLORS OF KEVYN AUCOIN The brand new Neo-Bronzer shade ,Neo-Limelight The Prismagic Highlighting Trio and multi-dimensional lips.

I

had the pleasure of going to a private screening of the new documentary, “Larger Than Life”, The Kevyn Aucoin movie with our Beauty Editor, Renee Garnes. For anyone who ever cracked open an issue of Vogue during his hey day, this is a love letter sent from “The Maestro of Make-up” to all of those who dare to look and feel beautiful!

Kevyn was a gentle giant of a man who had the wherewithal to document his entire life, including his meteoric rise to fame and the creation of the “Celebrity Make-up Artist”, all through the eyes of a visionary who believed that there was beauty in everyone. Along with family, friends and the most iconic celebrities, Aucoin was a brilliant documentarian who understood the importance of what he was doing and to capture the process of who he was to become. And what is even more remarkable, the audience was captivated as we observed the most elusive celebrities in an intimate way that only Kevyn Aucoin could pull off. You just didn’t say no to Kevyn. Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Chandra North, Kristen McMenamy and Kate Moss nonchalantly reveled in the beauty of his artistry, as well as, his presence. He was a maverick who possessed the transformative skills that unlocked the edgy side of Supermodel Paulina Porizkova and turned Brooke Shields into the hottest man that ever graced a magazine cover. Those editorials were a glimpse of what was to come.

15

Before Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat... before the “look at me generation” full of selfie obsessed Kardashians, Jenners and just about every girl with a cell phone, Kevyn did it first. Celebrities allowed him full access to their lives. Armed with a simple video cam, Polaroid camera, paper and pen, Kevyn teetered tottered between voyeur and exhibitionist as he posthumously starred in his own documentary. This movie proved that Kevyn didn’t have to tell old fisherman’s tales. His beautiful catches were all there for the world to see. Vogue covers, beauty Polaroids and the first selfies with he and his illustrious clients. Janet Jackson giggled as he gently held both sides of her face as he showed off his masterpiece. We peered into the making of Whitney Houston’s hit video, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”, as Kevyn meticulously powdered her t-zone. Kevyn gave us glimpses of his contribution to Tina Turner’s video, “I Don’t Wanna Fight” and you will be reminded of his artistry when you see the behind the scenes of Jennifer Lopez’, “Waiting For Tonight”, music video. If you didn’t know, it was his idea to individually glue rhinestones all over JLo’s body and on Cher’s eyes. She recalled, “Kevyn made everyone wait”.

While I was on Skype with Celebrity Make-up Artist Carmon Springs, she said, “What Kevyn did to Liza Minnelli’s face should be outlawed. Kevin gave Liza a fierce new look!”

the tear-jerking recollections that his family and friends so graciously recounted for us; with singer, Tori Amos wrapping it up in a bow.

Nearly two decades after his demise, the Aucoin family opened his time capsule and allowed us dreamers, beauty addicts and fashion fans an opportunity to marvel at his genius. He bared all as he documented, cataloged and confessed his inner most thoughts, hopes, dreams and health issues. He was an LGBTQ activist who fully embraced his sexuality and stood up for Gay Rights before it was in Vogue (pardon the pun).

Recently, I spoke to my friend the legendary photographer, Andre’ Rau about Kevyn. He recounted his days of working with Aucoin for Estée Lauder with Elizabeth Hurley. “Kevyn was the absolute best make-up artist in the world. His makeup was pristine and beautiful all they way until his death.” Andre’ Rau recalled, “Kevyn was the American superstar! He seemed to me to be bigger than life. His work intimidated me. I never thought, that one day I’d be able to work with him. When the right job came, the Estée Lauder campaign, I was able to work with Sandy and Kevyn. When I was told by my agent, Therese Mahar, that she’d confirmed Kevyn with Liz (Elizabeth Hurley) for Lauder... I must have jumped into the air.”

Harkening the days of Andy Warhol who once said, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”. Well, Kevyn took that quote, added some lashes, gave it smoky eyes and contoured his way into an unapologetic 15 year journey full of peaks, plateaus, pleasures and beauty that was riddled with physical pain. He never complained, yet admitted it was something he had been living with his entire life. During the early to mid-nineties, I began working for Francesco Scavullo and Sean Byrnes as one of their young stylists. I arrived to their studio to prep for an upcoming Cosmopolitan cover and Francesco asked me if I knew any new makeup artists. I was surprised. I said, “Yes, but what happened to Kevyn?” Scavullo said, “It is getting more difficult to book Kevyn. I need someone else when he is not available...” So I suggested Sam Fine, who at the time was somewhat of a friend and colleague. I told Scavullo, he is this young Black make-up artist who is doing that same kind of meticulous application. He never heard of him. At the time, I was living in Westchester which was a little bit of a trek from Manhattan. I told Francesco that I will run home and grab some film. I had just styled Tyra Banks for a Harper’s Bazaar cover try. I hustled out of his Madison Avenue townhouse and did a quick round trip back into the city. I placed all of the film strips on his light box and called Scavullo over to the table to access them. He analyzed the unretouched transparencies of Tyra, looked up and started screaming at the top of his lungs. The studio went silent as he yelled, “... what the hell! What the hell is going on here!” My heart sank. I started to perspire and I began to apologize to Scavullo, the legendary photographer who shot thirty years of Cosmopolitan magazine covers. He was the creator of the “Cosmo Look”. He said, “No Ty-Ron! This work is unbelievable. I am not mad at you... I am yelling at my assistants and studio managers. He continued yelling, “Why do I not know who Sam Fine is and get him in my studio now!” I called his agent Jean Owen and had her rush over his portfolio and I directly booked Sam for the first cover of South African Cosmopolitan magazine featuring Iman and several American Cosmo covers were to follow. Kevyn was not being replaced, but when he wasn’t around the show had to go on. Soon after, rumors began to go around that Kevyn was ill. At that time, there was little to no internet, so we relied on word of mouth. I don’t want to reveal all of the details of the documentary because it is important to experience PHOTOGRAPHY: EZEQUIEL DE LA ROSA

I was so nervous the day of our shoot, having Kevin on the job... was I up to his standards? Am I good enough? Am I good enough for Kevyn Aucoin?” Rau affirmed, “Kevyn was early. He was the first on set.” He was tall, well-built, welldressed and humble. He took out his make-up and placed it on his white towel as we talked. He was as simple as I was. He wanted to have a great job done and he told me that, ‘we’re stuck together, being only as good as the other one is’”. Rau continued, “... we agreed that I’m working towards him and he´ll work towards Liz and Lauder.” Andre Rau offered, “Kevyn was into detail and that level of detail I’ve only seen in director Roman Polanski. Kevyn took Liz back and forth, between the make-up room and the set. Looking at his work in my light. And/or I made adjustments to my light to bring out his make-up. Kevyn was a teamplayer. He was able to make a difference on a set. Being humble made everybody feel important that worked with him.” “The last time I saw Kevyn was in a New York City restaurant. At first, I didn’t notice that he was there. He came over to the table I shared with a friend. He thanked me for my trust in him and wished me a good future. Only when I learned that he died three weeks later, I understood his words. Kevyn Aucoin was one of the greatest of all time. God bless you Kevyn.” You must see this documentary in order to fully understand the man behind the brushes. “Larger Than Life”, will take you on a whirlwind journey of epic proportions as it gives you an insider view on his dramatic transformations, his creative eye that helped mold the modern day Supermodels. You will marvel at his fantastical interpretation and contribution to the beauty industry as he took make-up out of the dark ages and orchestrated cosmetic companies to create make-up with beautiful undertones that accentuated the multicultural beauty for women of all shades. In the fashion industry we often say this phrase, “... it was a moment”. I think that is the best way to describe the Kevyn Aucoin documentary and life. It was a moment... don’t miss it. Watch “Larger Than Life” on Netflix now before he leaves us all again.

JENN LYON

An Afternoon With

...

Interview by Tyson Murphy

FROM small town reverend’s daughter

To big time comedic ACTRESS,

North Carolina native Jenn Lyon is clawing her way to the top. With a broad scope of stage and screen work Jenn chats with us about her grounded nature, flourishing career and what we think is a secret crush on cereal! JEZ: From stage to screen, you’ve had quite a versatile platform thus far for your art. Which feels more like home to you and gives you more comfort and confidence as an artist? Jenn: I think that theatre will always be my first and best love. There is nothing like the immediacy and camaraderie of 8 shows a week; of being in the dark and telling a story in real time and hearing the breath of the audience. I love taking that ride together. But I’ll tell you what, TV certainly pays more of a living wage and when you don’t have to worry about making rent, that’s a real load off. JEZ: This issue is honing in on self-love and the connection we have with ourselves to do good in the world. What do you do for yourself to ensure your keeping yourself loved? Jenn: I think that being of service in the world is so important. Whenever I get to do it, whether it’s speaking out for reproductive rights or just making someone laugh, it allows me to zoom out and have perspective. Otherwise, get caught up in the drama of some negative thought that’s running in my brain. I am a site specific extrovert for my job, but in my real life I am introverted and need a lot of solitude in order to be a person. That’s something I give myself, giant globs of alone time where I say no words.

JEZ: How important is it for you to stay balanced and grounded as your career continues to progress and flourish? Jenn: Being grounded is super easy for me. I come from a family that would never let me get “too big for my britches,” as my mama would say. Whenever I left the house, growing up my dad would say, “Remember who you are and whose you are”, which is a reminder to stay true to who you are and what your own needs are, but it’s also a reminder to not shame my family. Being balanced is a whole other ball of wax, however, I’m terrible at it! I’m either, all the way into a healthy lifestyle, meditating and getting good sleep or I’m laying in a pile of laundry at 3am eating cereal out of the box. JEZ: You’ve experienced great success in past roles in shows such as “Justified” and “Saint George”. How is being a part of “Claws” different from your previous experiences? Is It? Jenn: “Justified” was absolutely eye opening, and taught me so much. “Saint George” was so great, George Lopez was such a fantastic teacher as well. The difference between those experiences, and “Claws” is that I’m not the student anymore, I’m running my own game now. Also, being surrounded by all these powerful women on camera and behind the camera is extremely rewarding. I can’t believe that I get to work on a show that depicts women and their friendships in this wild and daring way. It feels revolutionary. #TimesUp y’all! JEZ: You’re a reverend’s daughter and your character Jennifer on Claws, well, is not. Where do you draw from to find the attributes of this character to make her as real and honest as you have? Jenn: Jennifer is written so well and when you get great writing, it informs all the choices you make. I also grew up in the south around many women who were fierce, funny and complicated. I was always trying to memorize the way they held themselves and talked. So, I’m basically just stealing little pieces from everywhere.

JEZ: If you could leave the younger generation of actresses who aspire to build a successful career in the entertainment business as you have with one (or two) sentences of inspiration, what would they be? Jenn: Ok, I have four: 1. Give help to the world around you, and be a volunteer. 2. No one cares about your bangs… try not to talk about them. 3. Don’t be an asshole. 4. Create your own work

This season, we rolled out the red carpet for the transsexual break-out star, Dominique Jackson! She electrified the small screen as the show-stopping, scene stealing, reigning Queen of the Ball.

TOO MUCH IS NOT ENOUGH for this fierce diva in demand. Her character demands more! More opulence! More luxury! More extravagance! So, Celebrity Stylist Ty-Ron Mayes unlocks the vault at Hammerman Brothers Jewelry and delivers the Mother of The House her grand jewels. Well over $100 Million of diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies were hand delivered to the set, along with a full rack of vintage Versace from the Fashion Library of Albright. That will do! Everyone stop talking and start gawking because

LUKE Ditella ...

Photography: EZEQUIEL DE LA ROSA Stylist: LASSALLE Grooming by JACQUELINE LEIGHH

It’s captivating to see a man embrace life to the fullest. The professional surfer turned model, Luke Ditella, has parlayed a surfer career into a career in modeling. Just take a look at these cool shot where he gets to embrace his two passions. His high-octane lifestyle started at the tender age of 12, in which, he began riding waves into a successful career as a surfer. Eventually, Luke won multiple amateur and professional titles before being scouted by a film director in 2012 and signed by print and film agencies. He modeled for brands such as American Crew, Diesel, Ferrari, Grey Goose, Ray Ban and GQ. Ditella is considered to be a top model across multi-media outlets such as VH1, BuzzFeed and Elite Daily. Now, Luke is planning on starting up a whiskey brand. With everything on his plate, Luke Ditella still finds the time to give back to his community and to help people who are in need. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Luke gathered several of his friends and used social media to gather donations from: food, clothing and money. Together, they raised over $100,000 dollars in donations and dispersed them to victims that haven’t gotten their insurance checks. It just goes to show you, one man can make a huge difference in the world. Thank you, Lisa Raden, for the introduction 41

A MARVEL THAT EXUDES STYLE…

where he is the Brand Ambassador for Roberto Cavalli, Gianfranco Ferré and Etro Home Collections. Even if its changed forms, Alexander’s Midas Touch of style on the world still hits you at home. Now, it is just more literal.

that’s one way to describe the work of Alexander Allen. In the past year alone, he has worked on A-list projects featuring some of the most famous icons of our time, such as, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Denzel Washington and many others. With that being said, Alexander is leading up to his 20th anniversary in the entertainment business.

Alexander’s accomplishments just this past year shows that slowing down isn’t an option, as he has worked on: the summer blockbuster, “Ocean’s 8”, with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett; Ryan Murphy’s mega-hit television show, “POSE” and several Broadway productions which include: “The Iceman Cometh”, starring Denzel Washington and Disney’s trifecta: “Frozen”, “Aladdin” and “The Lion King”.

Alexander’s work has made its home on the red carpet, Broadway, television, film and now, interior design. Allen and fashion are passionate lovers that have devoted themselves to each other for two decades of effortless style, bursting with countless sartorial hits.

As fate would have it, Alexander Allen’s 20th anniversary in show business coincides with the 20th anniversary of Lauryn Hill’s hit album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. Twenty years ago, they would meet and work together on an exciting and unreleased (at time of print) secret project. The number of icons Alexander has worked with will surely only continue to grow as the years go by.

Falling in love with the ever-moving, wild lifestyle of fashion from his assistant stylist days of working with rockstar, Pink, the Brooklyn native went on to become a renown stylist that won a coveted VH-1/Vogue Award for Breakthrough Style.

Passion only fades when you get tired of what you do. Alexander Allen is the perfect example of what it means to not lose that passion.

Alexander stays hungry for fashion and isn’t one to just rely on his previous accomplishments. He’s now expanding his reach and expertise into the world of interior design

and I want to be part of that at some point.’ Amongst other music favorites were the sounds and great legacy of Michael Jackson. Alan has several memories of the late music icon including being 6 six years old watching Michael’s 1993 Super Bowl halftime show and obsessing over the BAD album.

From Christian Rock heartthrob to independent film producer to standout father and co-star of QUANTICO, Alan Powell stars in all the right roles. Alan recently joined us for a good old-fashioned telephone conversation to talk fatherhood, Michael Jackson and living the artists dream.

On screen, Alan’s most recent starring role as Mike McQuigg on ABC’s Quantico was the largest screen job to date in his career and he was thrilled to work with high quality actors on a fast paced set whilst bringing “a lighter touch” to his action star persona.

“I actually just got up from my piano to step on my back porch to call you”, he starts in with a deep, welcoming tone and goes on to talk about what a cool time it is to be an artist. Being that Alan has had quite a versatile platform for his art thus far in his career between actor and musician in Christian rock band Anthem Lights, he finds comfort and confidence in both. Although he couldn’t decide if one or the other profession boded better for him, he simply stated, “I just feel comfortable performing”. Alan continued on about having a special place in his heart for musical theater and Michael Jackson. Powell starred as Curly his senior of high school and would love to find his way to the bright lights of Broadway. ‘There’s just a feeling that I get when I go see musical theater

From his love of music and acting to the love of his family, Alan strives to move forward in his life and career with passion and importance. ‘I want to hand something to my kids. This is the reason I do what I do.’ Alan also adds producer to his resume and founded Powell Productions and is continuing to carve out his own path and building his own legacy, ‘Don’t wait on somebody else to give you yourBy dream, justDeBlauss go make Written Victoria it happen!

GLOBAL BEAUTY Written by Joseph Santos Beauty isn’t something you can measure or calculate in a mathematical equation. Beauty is rare and not something you can just stumble upon in a store. Beauty is elusive and is nearly incomprehensible. as it is a gift from nature. Beauty comes in different shapes, forms, colors and hues. You know you are in the presence of someone beautiful because beauty pleases the aesthetic senses but, it is yet to be defined. Beauty is a fluke that defies the realm of possibilities. Beauty is addictive because we crave, want and desire it. Beauty has been analyzed, scrutinized, capitalized, commercialized, compartmentalize and standardized? Ask 100 people what beauty is and who they consider to be beautiful; each person will point out something different. Some may be drawn to the softness in one’s eyes and some to a sensual, warm smile. Another may prefer a rubenesque body, while a slender figure may capture the eye of another. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder why do we so often hold onto to one specific standard?

It is time to expand our definition of beauty because beauty is subject to many different interpretations. The time has come to modernize the concept of beauty. The days of one standard of beauty is over. It is time to reboot the concept of what or who is considered to be beautiful because true beauty is global and should encompass a broad spectrum of people that includes different shades and sizes; each deserving to shine brightly. Human beings are all different and we should embrace those differences because when beauty is inclusive, the world will enjoy all that nature has to offer.
