The Jewish Day School of the Lehigh Valley is a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley

We are firmly committed to providing an outstanding education weaving Jewish values into everyday life to create a tapestry that wraps our children with the joy of learning and guides them throughout their life.

This year, the JDS is pleased to honor the Tamarkin family for their wonderful dedication and contribution to our Jewish community. Dr. Frank and Tama Tamarkin have been stalwart supporters of the Jewish community since first coming to the Lehigh Valley in 2007 from New Haven, Connecticut. Tama works as an admissions counselor at Muhlenberg College. Additionally, she is a member of the Sisterhood Board for Temple Beth El. Previously, she served on the Board of the Jewish Community Center and was a JDS board member for seven years and most recently served as President of the JDS Board from 2014-2016. Additionally, Tama volunteers and helps organize the Muhlenberg College’s Youth and Prejudice Program, an annual conference for Middle and High School students that aims to reduce hatred by learning the lessons of the Holocaust. Frank, a urologist at St. Luke’s, is a current board member of Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley and the past president of the Maimonides Society. Both Frank and Tama were the recipients of the George Feldman Achievement Award, which recognizes emerging volunteer leadership. They are committed Zionists, who show their support and commitment to Israel through their work as Wax Fellows and through their involvement with AIPAC. Frank believes that a day school is an integral part of a Jewish community and that a Jewish education is an essential element in a person’s upbringing. Frank says, “Jewish Day School Education provides a warm, nurturing and inclusive environment which

Jewish Day School has allowed me to broaden my knowledge and to think critically about issues in the world in the context of Judaism. It has prepared me to advocate for Israel. - Hannah Tamarkin

gives our children a strong sense of identity, a passion for their heritage, and a commitment to making the world a better place.” All three of their children - Hannah, Gabe and Zach - grew up in the JDS community. Zach is currently in the fourth grade at JDS, while Hannah and Gabe currently attend Barrack Hebrew Academy in Bryn Mawr. Hannah is vice president of the Regional BBYO youth group and a counselor at Pinemere Summer Camp in the Poconos where Gabe and Zach also attend. Mark Goldstein, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley says that, “The Tamarkin family represents the best of our Jewish community: a multi-generation family whose Jewishness is a matter of pride and meaning. They are role models for Jewish living, Jewish education, Jewish philanthropy, and for their commitment to Israel.” As committed leaders, both Frank and Tama have generously supported the JDS and other Jewish institutions in the community. Through their support, hard work and dedication, they have helped our beloved school flourish and become a better place for each student. “Our thriving Jewish Day School is not only a premier private school in the Lehigh Valley, preparing future Jewish leaders,” says Tama. “It is also an anchor and a profound marker of our Jewish community’s vibrancy.” The JDS is thrilled to recognize the Tamarkin family for their constant commitment to our Jewish Day School as well as our entire Jewish community.

The Tamarkins embrace all the actions that define a Jewish Family; they exemplorize the concept of respect for ones parents, they provide endless parental love and they work tirelessly for the community putting others’ needs even in front of their own. We feel extremely honored to count them as members of our OWN extended Lehigh Valley mishpuche.

From Our President

Sometimes it is important to take pause and consider why it is so important to invest in the Jewish Day School. Numerous studies have documented that the most effective way to ensure our children grow up committed to Jewish life, raise Jewish children, and support Jewish causes is by providing them with a Jewish education. Our children at the JDS become grounded with a strong moral compass inspired by studying Jewish texts. This study inspires critical thinking skills which further enhances our outstanding secular education and leads to superior performance in High School and beyond. Our honorees truly capture the essence of what makes a Jewish education so great. Recognizing the Kindergarten class of 1983 might at first appear to represent our past. Young minds entered our school full of hopes and dreams, yet wide open to all the possibilities of what the world is and what the world could be. They then went on to further their studies, away from us, and seemingly just a memory. Now we can see the results of the seeds planted at the JDS so many years ago. They have grown up and are assuming leadership roles in our community. Zac Cohen is a member of the JDS and board of trustees and Amy Golding has returned as our Head of School. Of course, each classmate’s book is still being written, but we can be assured that they will continue to rise as leaders. The Kindergarten class of 1983 could have no greater role models than the Tamarkin family. Well known in and around our community, both Tama and Frank have dedicated an unending amount of public time and support for numerous organizations as well as privately within their family exemplifying their love and passion for Judaism and Israel. Serving on many boards and presidencies between the two, they were both well deserving of the George Feldman Achievement Award for Young Leadership. On a personal note, Tama has been an incredible mentor and coach for me. I am indescribably grateful for all that she has done to support me in my role as President of the JDS. Not only have the Tamarkins made incredible contributions to our community, but their commitment to a Jewish education for their children has ensured that they, too, will be prepared to serve both the Jewish and broader community throughout their lives. Creating a strong foundation in Jewish learning, values and understanding of traditions, it should come as no surprise that their daughter Hannah is an officer in both student government and on the regional BBYO council. Zachary and Gabriel are committed to their Jewish Education and will be well positioned to become leaders someday as well. A thriving Jewish Day school is the hallmark of a committed Jewish community and plays a critical role ensuring the future of our people. We should all take pride in knowing that we have played a role in the success of the Tamarkin family and the Kindergarten class of 1983 through our support of the JDS. I thank each of you for all you do to make a Jewish education possible now and for years to come.

Eric J. Fels President

Dear Community,

From Our Head of School

Every child in every setting has been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” And like most, my answers, at different times, included: doctor, scientist, dancer, artist, musician depending on the given day. The dream of one day returning to my alma mater to sit in the very same office that Rabbi Cohen inhabited seemed nearly impossible. Yet, here we are, thirty-three years since my kindergarten class walked to the blackboard, which was then the art room, to find out if we were right- or lefthanded. Tonight, here we are, surrounded by my teachers and my peers, and it still feels like home. This is the beauty and wonder of the Jewish Day School. This unique community provides stellar academics, a love of Judaism, and a passion for building friendships that will sustain us for a lifetime. Everyone who has ever been a student here, sent a child here, taught here, or visited our halls calls the JDS home. Every Tu B’Shevat, we recall the story about an elder planting a carob tree. Honi, who was passing by, asked, “How long will it take for that tree to grow?” The man replied, “Seventy years.” Honi looked shocked as he asked, “How do you know that you will live another seventy years?” “I don’t, but just as those before me planted for me, I am planting this tree for the generations yet to come.” Tonight we see this story come to life. In this room, we are surrounded by sixty-three years of Jewish Day School history. I recently met one of the very first students at the JDS, and it is no surprise that she is a parent of one of my classmates from the kindergarten class of 1983. As I look at those present at the Gala, I see generations that have sent their children to the JDS. It is the people in this very room that fundraised for the playground that still stands; it is the people in this room that kept our kosher lunch-plan continuing year after year, and it is the people in this room that took the time to plant the seeds not just for themselves, or their children, but for the generations yet to come. We are blessed to celebrate, honor and thank the Tamarkin family - a family so devoted to our school and our community that it is we who are truly blessed. Tama, Frank, Hannah, Gabe and Zach thank you for guiding and loving our JDS. Your commitment to our Jewish values and ideals continues to shape future generations of students. Being the first graduate of the JDS to now have the role as Head of School is a wonderful gift. Together we celebrate our accomplishments and what we can be when we grow up. The future of what our students can achieve is in all of our hands today. And for that, I thank you for coming to the Gala, for enrolling your children and grandchildren in our beloved school, and for celebrating and honoring the gift of a Jewish education.

With warmth, Amy Golding
