Introduction By Professor Anita Taylor President, Wells Art Contemporary Executive Dean of Bath School of Art & Design at Bath Spa University

The Wells Art Contemporary - or WAC as it is widely known - is an annual open submission exhibition, established in 2012, with a founding principle to bring international contemporary art to the City of Wells, to promote and celebrate artists’ individual practice and development, and to further the exposure and support for the selected artists and their work beyond the WAC exhibition itself. Quartet is a new and significant opportunity to exhibit at JMG Gallery in London and is awarded for the first time. This quartet of artists chosen by Jennifer Guerrini Maraldi - Chris Daniels, Toni Davey, Jaana Fowler, and Judith Jones – could be seen as a distillation of the WAC 2018 exhibition selected by Harry Borden, Tali Lennox, Peter Randall-Page, Donald Smith, Caroline Walker and Julian Wild from an international submission. Quartet includes paintings, works on paper, collage, and sculpture by four artists at differing stages of their careers. Chris Daniels’ abstract paintings are primarily concerned with form and colour; derived from external references and structures that are in turn simplified, and amplified through their repetition and intuitive use of colour and surface, these sequences are playful, lively and visually striking.

Toni Davey has worked primarily with paper throughout her career, seeing the value of drawing as essential to creative enquiry and to exploring and interrupting the nature of illusion through systems, structures, mark making and the generation of forms and surfaces that follow an internal logic or set of rules to firm new equivalents to natural or man-made forms. Jaana Fowler’s subject matter, the still life, is explored through a range of media as she examines the domestic and the everyday through compositional arrangement, and by manipulating and amalgamating imagery or objects to form an integral and unified pictorial or physical equivalent in collage, pastel, print or sculpture. Judith Jones’ photographs document and depict buildings and constructed spaces at twilight. Internally lit vernacular structures suggest a world that is at once inhabited yet deserted, spaces seen and yet hidden, between day and night, dusk and dawn. Ultimately both familiar and unfamiliar, they are full of pathos and yet celebratory as they mark the moment of transition from one state to another. Many congratulations to JGM Gallery on supporting this fantastic opportunity for these artists and many thanks for your support of the Wells Art Contemporary. On behalf of WAC, I would like to thank everyone who supported and contributed to the 2018 exhibition – the selectors, sponsors, prize-givers, organising team, volunteers and patrons and a very special thank you is due to each of the artists and makers who submitted their work. Finally, many congratulations to the successful artists and makers with work included in the exhibition, and to the award winners of WAC 2018! We are looking forward to following your work and seeing what you will all be making for WAC 2019.

CHRIS DANIELS Chris Daniels makes abstract paintings concerned with the principles of colour and form. The geometric forms are taken from a range of selected elements – signs, shields, mountains, and through drawing, simplification and repetition these forms become ambiguous, reductive, and abstract. Using masking tape to control the painting gesture inside the hard-edged form, Daniels creates a visual tension between the shapes. With his mastered skills as a colour field painter, Daniels selects his colours intuitively, whilst always drawn to advertising as much as art history to deepen his understanding of colour relationships. Often working in series, he uses the same forms in different compositions and colours. The paintings function as an exposure to the effectiveness of the colour choice channelled through a self-restrained structure.

TONI DAVEY The process of ideas for Toni Davey’s sculptural pieces start from drawings on graph paper freehand, to facilitate the speed of recording as one idea leads to another. ‘In my work the underlying structure of the grid is always present. The grid offers the means to retrace ones’ footsteps, to understand the journey, to allow forms to follow a rule or sequence of changes that produce solutions which are pure, logical and visually beautiful: qualities that exist in nature’ – Toni Davey Often working to a tactile or human scale, Davey’s works have the ability to subtly heighten ones awareness of their surrounding environment. The piece ‘Pleasure Dome’ exemplifies her ability to work across different mediums and invite imagination. Created to commemorate 250 years of circus, Davey evokes the feeling of entering into an unknown, exciting and dangerous arena.

JAANA FOWLER Janna Fowler’s sculptures conform to the category of still life, however, she is more concerned with the notion of ordering positive and negative space, and establishing a sense of visual rhythm and movement within the works. The assemblages are often cement casts from domestic vessels and found objects, which lose their original identity as participants in more abstract compositions, where the main interest is the way forms relate and respond to each other. Fowler takes inspiration from her love of looking at paintings and sculptures from antiquity to the present day, where domestic and everyday things appear in various arrangements, as well as making observations of her own home paraphernalia and clutter.

JUDITH JONES Judith Jones stretches the boundaries of photography through research and experimentation. Her Twilight series examines the dialectic between the outside and inside, and the conflicts of private and public spaces. They explore concepts of exclusion and isolation, fear and uncertainty. Seemingly mundane vernacular spaces can hold a myriad of memories for us all, some of these spaces we may approach with fear or excitement, or simply a sense of familiarity. ‘Documenting this fragile time frame presents a magical, filmic space that at once intrigues and fascinates yet frightens me’ – Judith Jones
