Stage Layout: The performers should be arranged sequentially from left to right (I-IV), spaced as far apart as possible. Each player should have his or her own space that is independent from the other players. The conductor stands in front-center of the stage, as illustrated:

Each player should have a double of certain instruments in their setup, as described on the previous page. The first set is normal and uncovered, the second set is covered with a towel, light blanket, or other cloth to dampen the sound. These dampened instruments are used only in the first movement. Each player has in their setup a container of small objects that they will “play� by rummaging through with their hands (slowly and evenly when marked p; with quick, jerky motions when marked f). The containers should be of sturdy, nonresonant material, such as plastic or cardboard. The precise objects in the boxes are left up to the performer, but the specific material for the objects are specified on the previous page. The objects should be relatively small in size, and fill ! to ! of the box. It is important that there are enough objects to collide with each other and produce a properly dense sound.

Instrumental/performance notes: Except for the crotales and vibraphones, whose pitches are notated specifically, all instrument sizes and pitches are relative (high, medium, and low). Each player should have four types of mallets: snare drum sticks, triangle beaters, bows, and superball mallets. In addition, Percussion II and III will use hard rubber mallets. All mallet uses and changes are noted specifically in the score. The use of mallet handles and fingernails to scrape certain instruments are also noted.

In all measures of rest with fermatas (mm. 13, 15, 17, and 19 in mvt. I; mm. 133, 135, 137, 139, 141, 143, 145, 147, and 149 in mvt. II), players should synchronize their mallet changes on conductor’s cue -- i.e. players should put down old mallets and pick up new ones all together. Dynamics are relative to the total sound of the ensemble -aim for as balanced and even a sound as possible. Let all sounds vibrate freely unless specified otherwise.
