Getting Creative T

here aren’t many who can say their job allows them to explore their creative self: it’s one of the main reasons #ilovemyjob. At Weddingbells, our job is to inspire you with pretty ideas, details and dreams for the biggest party of your lifetime—and what fun we have doing it across the brand’s multi-platforms! As you step into the world of wedding planning, I bet you, too, are deep diving into your creative self in ways you may have never done before. That’s what makes the experience so exhilarating ... and overwhelming. Getting married in 2018 you are positively spoiled for choice when it comes to all aspects of your wedding: fashion, food, decor, venues, destinations, sweets and treats. We’ve got some of the best trends right here in this issue to get your ideas percolating. For the fashion features this issue we are profiling the best of Canadian bridal design in the shoot “Made in Canada” (p. 131), which took us on location to the Fairmont Empress, one of Canada’s most iconic hotels. We’re also showcasing dresses (and one jumpsuit) that speak to brides of every fashion personality in “Express Yourself” (p. 142). Other favourites this issue include the sweet, citrus-inspired cake shoot (“Tropical Punch,” p. 94), our roundup of all the best

trends from New York Bridal Fashion Week (“All Dressed Up,” p. 52), and a fun and fabulous way to connect your fragrance with your wedding flowers (“Fresh Bouquets,” p. 76). Real weddings are always a huge part of what brings us (and you) inspiration. This issue we have some stunning celebrations, including a very special one we planned with Toronto photographer Barb Simkova, who photographed the entire wedding using an iPhone 8 Plus. See how she beautifully captured Kristen and Robert’s day (“iDo,” p. 100). As technology evolves, more and more photographers are mixing up the tools they use to capture impactful imagery. We thought it would be fun to get creative with some of the photos this issue—our stunning cover image was also shot with an iPhone 8 Plus. We always love hearing from you and how we helped you plan your dream day. Find us @weddingbellsmag!

Things We Love Vintage Vibes

We’re smitten with the dreamy lineup of retroinspired gowns by designer trista smith’s Reclamation label (etsy.ca/shop/ reclamationbytrista) based in Victoria, British Columbia. “My line fuses reclaimed fabrics with new materials to create one-of-a-kind pieces infused with meaning, intention and purpose,” smith explains. “My current collection merges the sultry silhouettes of the roaring ’20s with all the romance of boho-chic style. the results are dresses that flow and move with weighty crochet lace and have sleeves for days.”—Alison McGill

Old HOllywOOd GlamOur Nothing beats the golden age of Hollywood when it comes to great hair. Sophisticated, expertly styled and super elegant, the vibe here harks back to Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth with their sculptural finger waves that created a major bombshell effect. Modern-day champions include Blake Lively and Cate Blanchett. Making this classic look fresh and new means creating a looser texture in the hair using a curling iron instead of rollers. Hair is then brushed out and smoothed into a shapely style that never looks stiff, but instead appears sexy, soft and touchable. Consider this look the elevated evolution of the tousled beach waves popular for the last several years.

sHOrt & sweet A great haircut is a wonderful thing. If you regularly rock an amazing short style there’s no reason you have to switch that up for your wedding day. Janelle Monáe, Michelle Williams and Ruth Negga are living proof short hair is incredibly gorgeous and looks amazing with a dazzling dress. There is a thought that short hair doesn’t require much fuss— generally this is true, but I will say your wedding day is an exception to this rule! You need to have your hair done by a pro so it looks flawless. If you are playing with accessories like a hairband, your stylist will determine how to wear your hair with the special piece to create the perfect sweet and chic wedding look.

PHOTOGRAPHY, GETTY.

The Red CaRpeT TReaTmenT

Always popular with brides, the new way to wear braids is loose and airy, but a little less boho. Olivia Culpo, Lily Collins and Sarah Jessica Parker are beauties who have recently appeared on the red carpet sporting plaited prettiness. Styles have ranged from braided topknots to halo braids and loose, casual fishtails. I think braids can look extremely couture and become even more beautiful when dressed up with accessories like fresh flowers, glittering hairpins, a vintage comb or dazzling statement earrings.

frOm emmA: Though Elliot and I moved to British Columbia a year-and-a-half ago, we knew we had to get married in our hometown of Creemore, Ontario. the rolling hills of creemore are so beautiful. we’ve known each other since high school, so getting married there was extremely special. we started the lavender farm as a family project the summer before the wedding, so it was all hands on deck to get the farm harvested and wedding-ready in the weeks leading up to the event. A bohemian and relaxed backyard wedding vibe was the goal. we wanted a chill evening and a fun summertime party for the guests. the ceremony was a highlight of the day. everyone was so relaxed but excited and we couldn’t stop smiling. seeing all our favourite people together with cocktails in hand, cheering us on, was so amazing. All the lavender accents were incredible. elliot’s mother used lavender from the farm to make the flower girls’ headbands. we also had lavender cheesecake from one of our favourite creemore restaurants, sachets filled with lavender as favours for the guests and lavender sprigs on every place setting. it truly was the perfect accent to the wedding decor and to top it off, it smelled wonderful. The clear-top tent was the crowning backdrop for the evening. lots of string lights and the beautiful summer night made the tent a cosy place to watch the stars and the fireworks at the end of the evening. the groomsmen and my brother-in-law had spent the entire previous day setting up the fireworks and it was an incredible show that seemed to last forever!

iDo This couple used beauTiful rusTic decor To add romance To Their indusTrial venue. (and we equipped ToronTo phoTographer barb simkova wiTh The iphone 8 plus To capTure all of The sTunning deTails!)

Kristen Holman

and

robert Frasca october 7, 2017

from krisTen: We were going for a casual, rustic feel. we didn’t have a theme or colours per se, we just knew we wanted a lot of neutrals and greenery to give the industrial space at evergreen brick works a somewhat romantic feel. we wanted the decor to be minimalist so that it would complement, rather than overpower, the existing aesthetic of the venue. After being together for 12 years, we wanted to plan a wedding that was very “us.” That meant something casual but heartfelt, replete with personal touches. our wedding day turned out to be just that. The energy and pure, genuine excitement we felt throughout the day, from beginning to end, is something we will never be able to replicate. From our perspective, the band was key to the whole evening. we still have vivid memories of our guests running to the dance floor from across the room when they heard the beginning of a backstreet boys track. at one point i looked over and saw my 86-year-old grandfather busting a move—a sight i’ve never ever seen before! our families were living in the moment and the excitement was contagious. from The phoTographer: i haven’t shot a wedding entirely on an iphone before but i was so excited for the challenge! i love that an iphone allows you to capture something quickly and portrait mode blows me away. The portrait of kristen with her flowers is a favourite. This image was lit from behind, which gives her that beautiful glow. historically, backlight has been more challenging to capture on phone cameras, and the iphone 8 plus’ ability to deal with that type of light—for which we wedding photographers spend all day hunting—is a game changer.

Air of Romance This ToronTo couple’s ulTra-chic celebraTion was modern and minimalisT, filled wiTh eclecTic, personal deTails.

jen masseau

and

andrew heber june 3, 2017

from jen: For the wedding, I went with an organic, mixed palette geared toward evoking a certain mood. i wanted to incorporate modern, minimalist touches instead of being locked into a colour scheme with matchy-matchy everything. we ended up picking soft, airy hues of blue and grey for the bridesmaids, who each chose the shade and style she liked best. The decor was mostly white, grey and black, and hints of mauve, blush pink and teal green. Inspired by the tradition of Moroccan wedding blankets, we chose a special rug to stand on during the ceremony. along with doubling as decor, it serves as a memento for us to remember our special day. as long as we keep the rug, we will always have the spot we were married on wherever we go! I DIY-ed a lot of the reception details. i designed all the stationery, from the invitations and seating chart to the menus and place cards—i was really proud of how they turned out. i also hand-cut and hand-dyed over 46 metres of muslin fabric for the table runners. The florist and planner executed my vision for the venues perfectly. Kristina of minim designs created the most lush-yet-restrained arrangements for the altar and reception tables, and included some of my favourite flowers, such as lilacs and anemones. i spent months sourcing the perfect mix of matte, minimalist bud vases for the reception tables, which she filled with sculptural stems and foliage. jessica of bisous events did a stellar job of styling the altar and the table settings—it was spot-on to what i envisioned. The ceremony was truly the highlight of our day. walking down the aisle into a room filled with all the people i love most to profess my love and commitment to my new husband was an overwhelmingly beautiful moment.

MITCHELL BERNARD auguST 26, 2017

frOm ashley: I’m from St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Mitchell is from Tignish, Prince Edward Island, and our wedding took place in Newfoundland. Guests included friends and family from both provinces and across the country. we wanted the wedding to be a celebration of our roots so we incorporated a lot of local elements, such as chocolate bars bearing newfoundland and p.e.i. sayings like “some shockin’ good,” and mitchell’s socks had the official p.e.i. flower, a lady’s slipper, on them. it was incredible to bring so many people to newfoundland for the first time and see them experience the province and culture. We had a screech-in for 26 guests. it was amazing to welcome them to newfoundland and invite them to become “honorary newfoundlanders.” this involved each person taking a shot of rum, eating some “newfie steak” (a piece of bologna) and saying, “long may your big jib draw,” which essentially means “live long and prosper.” i hired skipper dickie from the royal Order of newfoundland, and he had everyone in absolute stitches. Mitchell and I love to eat, so we wanted to make sure everyone was very well fed. we served newfoundland hors d’oeuvres, including cod bites and toutons with molasses (a traditional newfoundland pancake), as well as cake and doughnuts, which were a huge hit. I’ll never forget our first look on the cliffs of Cape Spear. my veil actually blew off in the wind and was caught by the videographer! the wind was so incredibly strong it almost knocked us off the cliff, but it was an epic first look—it was important to do it in a place that meant a lot to us. we wanted that private moment together, just us two. My dress was an important detail. my sister and mom travelled to toronto, where mitchell and i live, to help me find it. when i tried on the dress in the first store i was unsure, but i tried it on in the second store without realizing it was the same dress and decided it was the one! my mother then revealed that when my grandmother passed she left money for me to buy my dress, so it was a gift from her, which was truly special.

With a grand presence over Vancouver Island’s Victoria Harbour, the Fairmont Empress has been a cornerstone of the city for 109 years. The property recently underwent a $60-million restoration and renovation, adding sophisticated modern details to its golden-era heritage. One of the best ways to reach Victoria is by seaplane—our model Carina is ready to jet on Harbour Air’s special edition Canada 150 Otter seaplane.

When the Crystal Ballroom first opened at the King Edward Hotel in 1922, it was the grandest place in city for events, particularly weddings. The space held its last function in 1979, after which the ballroom—in desperate need of renovation— was closed. Thirty-eight years and a $6.5-million revitalization later, this dazzling darling is once again shining bright.

O

n a spring morning in May of 2010, Liz Trinnear met Nathaniel Motte in the hallway of the CTV building in downtown Toronto. Nathaniel and Sean Foreman, who comprise the electronic music duo 3OH!3, were on tour and doing press. “I saw a tall man with a ponytail wearing a poncho, and he saw what he says was ‘a beautiful girl,’” Liz recalls. “It’s a long story, but after interviewing them on the roof of the building, I gave them flowers as a peace offering, and Nathaniel kept the flowers.” Seven years later the pair exchanged vows in Nathaniel’s hometown of Boulder, Colorado, in an outdoor ceremony featuring a million-dollar view of the Rocky Mountains. “I visited the Flagstaff Mountain summit on one of my first visits to Boulder,” says Liz. “We were so excited to share the view with friends and family from around the world; deciding to get married in Boulder meant an outdoor ceremony, and the mountaintop view took it to the next level.” Liz insisted on incorporating Canadian touches into the wedding, so she chose a dress from the Mikaella Bridal line of Canadian label Paloma Blanca, with the help of her bridal stylist Jessica Mulroney working with Kleinfeld Canada. “I knew I wanted something Canadian, chic and timeless,” Liz explains. “I’m a sucker for trendy things, but I wanted my dress to stay classic forever.” She also opted for Canadian content with the rings—the pair chose Birks for their matching platinum wedding bands, which they exchanged during the unexpectedly rainy ceremony.

154

w e d d i n g b e l l s . c a spring & sum mer 2018

“It hadn’t rained in five weeks in Boulder, and our wedding day called for 27 degrees with clear skies,” Liz says. “I thought it was going to hold out when the first couple of drops fell before the ceremony, but then it poured during the vows!” Despite this, the rain tapered off post-ceremony and the couple descended the mountain in a 1967 Triumph TR6 car, lent to them for the event by good friend Peter Rountree. “It was so much fun and such a special moment to share with each other,” Liz says with a smile. “The car was a beaut and when we rolled up to all the guests enjoying cocktail hour on the patio, we got a solid, rowdy cheer!” After changing into custom his-and-hers sneakers for the reception, the couple shared their first dance to “Lights Down Low” by MAX, covered by friends Marshall Gallagher and Liam O’Donnell. “The song was written and produced by my husband and Liam a few years ago, and it is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard,” says Liz. “We are both music lovers, so there was a bit of discussion as to what that first dance tune would be, but once this song came into play it was a no-brainer.” Their wedding cake was a detail Liz initially wasn’t too fussed about, but it ended up being one of her favourite elements of the day. After a taste-testing at Piece, Love & Chocolate in Boulder, the couple was blown away. Instead of a traditional white cake, they opted for tiers of chocolate cake, each filled with a different flavour: salted caramel cream, cream cheese or raspberry. “It was divine!” Liz exclaims. “Beyond the cutting of the cake and the first bite, we didn’t have any of the rest and I’m still sad about it!”

I

n 2007 Carol Lau and Truman Wong had their first encounter at the church they both attended. Seven years later, Truman proposed to Carol during a cruise to Bermuda. “It happened one night when I had trouble opening the door to our cabin. Truman opened the door, and to my surprise, he was all dressed up,” Carol recalls with a smile. “He started singing a song, led me to the balcony and asked me to marry him. The plan all along was for me to eventually open the door myself and find him in the room, but Truman accidentally locked it from the inside!” Considering they had family from several different countries, a destination wedding was always in the cards for the couple. “We thought it would be wonderful to gather friends and family for a getaway somewhere in Asia,” Carol explains. “We finally decided on Bali, Indonesia, because of its beautiful scenery, great accommodations and how amazing the weddings there always look.” The pair knew one detail they really wanted for their wedding was to include as many flowers as possible. “We love flowers and greenery, and Bali is absolutely stunning with amazing landscapes, so we wanted to include as much of Bali’s beautiful outdoor elements inside the venue as well,” Carol shares. “We wanted an elegant look for the wedding day, but also wanted it to be cheerful and represent fun and joy.” A favourite moment for Carol happened on the morning of the wedding, before the ceremony. “I’ll never forget how I felt when I first saw Truman that day,” she says. “We hugged, and

158

w e d d i n g b e l l s . c a spring & sum mer 2018

I swear I saw tears in his eyes. I couldn’t believe I was going to become his wife, and he was going to be my husband.” Friends and family from Toronto, New York, Melbourne, Taiwan and Hong Kong gathered in the Infinity Chapel of the Conrad Bali resort to watch the couple say “I Do.” The chapel’s location right on the water made for a dazzling balloon-release photo op, followed by a canopy-covered lunchtime reception. “I really loved how we were able to use all the outdoor and indoor spaces at Conrad Bali,” Carol notes. Stepping into the Kecak Ballroom for the reception was a moment of delight for the bride and groom, who had only seen the space once before. “It was hard to visualize without seeing everything in person beforehand,” Carol admits. “But it turned out so much better than I could have ever imagined.” A lush green floral wall with a “Carol and Truman” decal served as the backdrop for the head table, which was lined with stunning blue, blush and white blooms. Gorgeous stems hung from the ceiling above every inch of the space, and gold centrepieces topped with flowers stood in the middle of each table. Guests enjoyed dinner and surprise performances by Carol, who played the piano, and Truman, who performed a dance routine with his groomsmen. The celebrations continued with many guests spending time with the couple in Bali after the wedding. “We are blessed to have so many family and friends who were able to fly in from all over the world to be with us,” Carol says. “We are grateful they’ll be a part of our memories forever.”

or Sarah Marantz, director of marketing at Canadian label Pink Tartan, and Ira Lindenberg, who works in real estate development, it was clear they had an incredible connection from the moment they met. “We had tons of mutual friends, but we had never crossed paths,” Sarah shares. “At our wedding a friend asked Ira when he knew we were going to get married. He said, ‘Before we met.’” The Carlu in Toronto was the venue of choice for the sophisticated celebration. On the morning of the wedding, the couple took photos in downtown spots and then met with their closest friends and family for the first few events of the day: the bedeken veiling ceremony and the signing ceremony of the ketubah (Jewish marriage contract). The traditional wedding ceremony was held in the Carlu’s Round Room, where guests were seated around the venue’s iconic Lalique fountain. After Ira smashed the glass, signifying the ceremony’s end, the bride and groom shared a kiss under the chuppah then exited the room to “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie. Everyone headed into the main foyer where a jazz trio, the first of three bands that played at the celebration, cranked out tunes while guests indulged in the couple’s favourite drinks and hors d’oeuvres. “During the cocktail hour we had a giant harvest table, as well as carving and poke bowl stations,” Sarah notes. Following the cocktail reception, guests entered the main dining room, which was completely transformed into the pair’s vision of an intimate, secret garden.

162

w e d d i n g b e l l s . c a spring & sum mer 2018

“The Carlu is an art deco venue so we chose black, white and gold as our colour scheme,” Sarah says. “We wanted the feeling of an outdoor space even though we were indoors.” Gorgeous white blooms filled the tables, along with candles wrapped in greenery, while a large floral installation hung above the dance floor. To complete the outdoor feel, 15-foot cypress trees were placed around the venue’s perimeter. The hora (traditional Jewish dance) started shortly after everyone entered the dining room, with Ira and Sarah being lifted in chairs by family and friends. “Ira nearly gave me a heart attack by stage diving several times into the arms of his friends!” Sarah reveals with a laugh. The couple’s first dance, to “Purple Rain” by Prince, was a special moment. “We had just finished our speech so all the ‘work’ of the wedding was done, nerves had subsided and we were ready to party,” says Sarah. “When we invited everyone to join us on the dance floor toward the end of the song, it felt like not a single person was still sitting.” At midnight, guests headed back to the Round Room for the after-party, where they snacked on Asian street food as The Lizards performed hits from Ira’s favourite band, Phish. Looking back on the day’s festivities, Sarah was glad to have stolen a few minutes alone with Ira before the reception. “It was the first quiet moment we had had all day,” she says with a smile. “We were officially husband and wife and we were basking in that joy—and drinking tequila!”

Budapest, Scotland, New York and Montreal are four destinations we’re currently loving for romantic travel.

bu da p e st

This central European city is quite simply a symphony for the senses; a place as charming as it is modern and exciting. With its dazzling architecture and burgeoning food and fashion scenes, Budapest is poised to become the next Paris—minus the pretension. Nicknamed the spa capital of the world for the hundreds of thermal and mineral springs that run beneath the city feeding its numerous bath houses, relaxation is an integral part of daily life in Budapest. For centuries locals have been “taking the waters” to cure everything from hangovers to arthritis. Budapest is also a place where derelict buildings are being transformed into trendy ruin bars—another of the city’s claims to fame (hence the aforementioned hangovers!). An average summer afternoon might include a trip to the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, one of the largest bath houses in Europe with 21 pools and 11 saunas, followed by lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant (there are several to choose from) serving modern takes on Hungarian classics like goose liver and goulash, and local wine spritzers on a sun-speckled terrace on the shores of the Danube. The romance of Budapest is undeniable, and at the heart of this is the city’s connection to its musical heritage. Handsome, captivating piano virtuoso and composer Franz Liszt is a national hero (even the international airport bears his name) and, in some ways, Liszt has become a muse for the city, which shares his famous characteristics. Nowhere is this more evident than at the Aria Hotel, a luxury property in the city centre inspired by music. Designed to resemble a lavish Hungarian palace, the property features four wings, each dedicated to one of four major genres of music: classical, opera, contemporary and jazz. The Aria is also situated directly beside the famous St. Stephen’s Basilica and offers unparalleled views of the iconic church’s dome and bell tower from its rooftop bar. High Note SkyBar is the only year-round full-service rooftop garden terrace in Budapest and boasts creative cocktails and a menu of light bites conceptualized by Gerbeaud, one of Hungary’s most famous culinary brands. The hotel even employs a music director to provide guests with advice on current cultural and musical activities in the area. Whether wandering Budapest’s cobblestone streets, touring the bustling market halls or enjoying an evening at the iconic 19th-century opera house, it’s easy to lose yourself in the quiet rhythm of this place and almost impossible not to fall in love with what you discover.—Jen O’Brien

The Big Apple is a city that is always electric and evolving. It only takes a New York minute to feel caught up in the city’s energy once your feet hit the streets to explore its many neighbourhoods and boroughs—from Soho to the Meatpacking District, Chelsea to the newly hip Midtown. It’s the pace of the city and all the amazing food, entertainment, shopping and cultural experiences that make it such a romantic spot. When it comes to choosing your honeymoon hotel, a property offering an intimate, quiet and luxe stay is likely top of your list and we have found the ultimate spot: the Whitby. Opened in Feburary 2017, the Whitby is a sister property of the Crosby hotel, both American outposts of the London-based Firmdale Hotels. The signature of Firmdale is the incredibly eclectic-yet-cozy stylings of interior designer Kit Kemp, who co-owns Firmdale with her husband, Tim. The couple’s philosophy: “Hotels should be living things not stuffy institutions.” This is exactly what you will enjoy at the Whitby. Tucked away in the heart of midtown at West 56th and 5th Avenue, the hotel is truly a sanctuary in one of the buzziest parts of Manhattan (you will actually find your self breathing a big ‘ahhhhh’ the moment you enter the lobby). Incredible art pieces and fabrics create a colourful cozy lobby, lounge, bar and restaurant on the main floor. Spread over 16 floors, each of the hotel’s 86 rooms are individually designed by Kemp, and boast floor-to-ceiling windows for incredible city views and a feeling of airy dreaminess. For a just-married splurge, book a junior terrace suite where you can enjoy romantic breakfasts in an oasis of zen in the big city. Other pleasures to enjoy at the Whitby: traditional afternoon tea and a retro film screening in its private theatre. Once you check in, you won’t want to leave! The Whitby is a wonderfully immersive, luxury hotel experience that will definitely leave you positively smitten.—Alison McGill

If you are considering a honeymoon at home, the city of Montreal is perfect thanks to it’s Euro-vibes and charm. For romance, Old Montreal’s cobblestone streets can’t be beat— take a wander through this historic neighbourhood and explore all its nooks and crannies packed with interesting cafés, bistros and artisan shops. Another must? A trip to the top of Mount Royal for a breathtaking view of the city below. No visit to Montreal is complete without sampling such culinary delights as bagels, smoked meat and poutine. Currently topping our radar as the place to stay is the newly revamped Fairmont Queen Elizabeth hotel. The property closed for one year to undergo a top-to-bottom reno, reopening in July 2017 with a modern, mid-century interior that is funky and fabulous. Our choice for the ultimate stay at the hotel is Suite 1742, which was made famous in 1969 when John Lennon and Yoko Ono made it the site of their second Bed-In for Peace. Preserving the original character of the suite was paramount. Furniture was positioned in the same way John and Yoko had it set up for theBed-In—with the bed placed in front of the suite’s living room window. Above the bed are reproductions of the Bed-In’s famous handwritten messages, “Hair Peace” and “Bed Peace”. The suite’s modern and eclectic decor is inspired by the places the couple lived or visited, including London, New York, Tokyo and New Delhi. The suite is home to a host of original and distinct artwork to give guests a fully immersive experience. Installations produced and designed by Montreal art direction agency MASSIVart found in Suite 1742 include a cabinet containing photos, videos and historical items. The suite also has a virtual reality angle—you can don headsets placed on the nightstands next to the bed, which immerse you in John and Yoko’s world. Thanks to Outlander, Scotland is definitely having a moment. The adventures of time-travelling Claire and her Highlander love Jamie beautifully showcase the country, one of the most stunning and wildly romantic destinations in the world. We love the city of Glasgow as a base for your Scottish adventures. (We also have thoughts on where to plan a perfect destination wedding!) Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and its most colourful. The port city located on the River Clyde is famous as the cultural hub of Scotland and the UK. Glasgow is home to stunning Victorian and art nouveau architecture, incredible galleries (Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is an absolute must), and thriving theatre, dance, music and food scenes. It is a city that is easily walkable, which lends itself perfectly to romantic urban adventures. A blissful stay for your honeymoon is the Principle Blythswood Square hotel, which is located on a quiet street in the heart of the city. The hotel’s Georgian townhomes date to the 1800s and have been converted into a super-chic, luxe boutique hotel that fuses modern design with historic details. It is also home to one of Glasgow’s top spas, which offers an amazing hydrotherapy pool, crystal steam room and extensive treatment menu for post-nuptial indulgence. If you are thinking of a destination wedding in Scotland, perhaps in a centuries-old historic castle, there is a dream venue located an hour from Glasgow. Borthwick Castle (where we shot on location for our Fall & Winter 2016 issue,) is one of the finest surviving examples of medieval architecture, and has been lovingly and lavishly restored into an incredible bespoke event venue. The castle was built by Sir William de Borthwick and has a storied history, including playing host to Mary Queen of Scots and her husband, the Earl of Bothwell, during her reign in the 16th century. What’s magical about Borthwick Castle is how the authenticity of the 600-year-old space has been preserved through thoughtful design— the vibe is pure luxury, with rich fabrics, colours, textures and incredible bespoke furnishings featured throughout. For weddings, Borthwick can accommodate up to 80 guests in the magnificent Great Hall. Located several winding staircases above on the castle’s top floor is the Garrison, a dramatic and cozy space to say ‘I do.’ And if you want to know what it’s like to sleep like a king and queen, Borthwick has got you covered. Trust us when we say a stay in one of the castle’s plush bedchambers will be a lifetime memory. All 10 sumptuous bedchambers are designed to showcase the historic castle’s details.—A.M.

for simple, ethereal beauty with as many fairy lights as possible. We enhanced the landscape’s natural beauty with muted floral arrangements, old Persian rugs, tiki lamps and wood accents. Our clock guestbook was unconventional and one of our favourite details—it hangs on a wall in our house and is a daily reminder of the amazing day we had. we paid special attention to details for the guests to ensure they had everything they needed. We scheduled pick-up and drop-off times, had drinks available immediately upon

arrival and hot towels to freshen up before dinner. We received great feedback and appreciation for those thoughtful, little touches. we hired a local british pop cover band that was fantastic. There is nothing like live music to produce an amazing atmosphere and encourage everyone to join in the fun. my absolute favourite memory is our first dance. I was in shock when Doug agreed to learn a routine for the occasion. It was such a lovely moment that concluded with Doug wiping out on the dance floor mid-twirl. Everyone got up on their feet. FROM CATHERINE: we wanted a bright and fresh palette for the wedding. I just chose my favourite colours and decided I would make them work together. Rose gold, navy, sage, blush and fuchsia ended up being a gorgeous combination. we had a mixologist friend create a custom welcome cocktail. It was a yummy, bubbly, ginger-lemonade drink with a touch of sake, gin and special bitters. People loved it and we were happy to add an extra-fancy touch to the cocktail hour. we took a lot of care in choosing the wedding-party attire. One of my bridesmaids was amazed by

how we ensured their dresses matched the flowers and napkins. The groomsmen wore socks with fleur-de-lis on them because we got married on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, a holiday dear to Yvon’s heart. in the end, it all came down to exchanging vows in front of loved ones and joining our lives forever. It’s not an overrated moment. During dinner we took a quiet moment together to appreciate how 200 people we care about came from all around the world to celebrate with us. That was actually how we described it when we made the welcome toast: it was “our love party!” spring & sum mer 2018 w e d d i n g b e l l s . c a

FROM JULIE: we wanted beautiful, out-ofthe-ordinary decor that was also romantic. To achieve that effect we put emphasis on birch wood with lots of flowers and candles. The palette we chose was blush and grey, since these colours are perfectly matched and also worked well with the wood. My dress was really gorgeous. For my wedding I wanted something specific, which represented me—a romantic yet elegant gown. I ended up with a backless dress that has a lot of lace and a long, flowing train. we chose three songs for different parts of our day. During the ceremony it was

Pachelbel’s “Canon in D,” the same song my parents used at their wedding. For the first dance we picked the tango tune “Santa Maria” by Gotan Project. Later my father whirled me around the dance floor to “My Girl” by the Temptations. the best part about planning the wedding was the big surprise we prepared for the guests. We wanted to do something different for the first dance, so we took eight group lessons to learn the basics of tango. We then had 12 private lessons with a professional Argentine tango dancer. Our first dance segued into a great party! spring & sum mer 2018 w e d d i n g b e l l s . c a

FROM saRa: colin and i met at a new Year’s eve party in Moncton, new brunswick. I was visiting for the holidays from Montreal, where I was attending grad school. We were introduced by mutual friends and connected instantly. after graduating I moved to New Brunswick to start our life together. we let the winter season provide the inspiration for the wedding. Luckily, the charming city of Charlottetown and the venue, the Prince Edward Island Brewing Company,

provided the perfect backdrop for a simple and elegant, yet modern and relaxed affair. The greenery was really the focal point of the decor. It gave the wedding a wintry and natural look, which I loved. We also added hundreds of tiny lights to the centrepieces to boost the romance. being surrounded by so many people we loved was really the highlight of the day. Celebrating our love with our closest family and friends is truly what stood out for me. all day I felt as though my heart could burst at any moment!

really “how much fun can we jam into a long weekend for our favourite people?” We wanted great music, seafood, golfing and spending time with guests against the backdrop of Cape Breton’s beauty. i knew i wanted to base the wedding decor on white, mixed metals and marble with touches of warmth from greenery and wood. I love this combination in many different areas of design—it’s clean, modern and beautiful. When Gavin and I entered the reception space for the first time to dance with our twin baby boys on the

marble floor, it was a marvellous moment. my dress was a total dream to create. I designed it with Katrina Tuttle and team and it was the most fun process you could imagine. My dress was also incredibly comfortable: the layers of silk for the skirt were so light, and the beadwork and details on the bodice were something special. music was an important part of the wedding. Our good friends, who are in the band Port Cities, surprised everyone with a song they wrote for us called “Everybody Falls In Love With You.” They are amazing musicians, so it was extremely special! spring & sum mer 2018 W e D D i N g b e l l S . c a
