RELATED CONTEXTUAL ACTIVITIES THE LOCATION OF THE LAUNDROMAT PROVIDES CONVINEINCE FOR VARIOUS USER BEHAVIORS WITHIN THE STREET OF JALAN RAJA MUDA MUSA. ALONG THIS STREET, ESTABLISHMENTS SUCH AS A SCHOOL, A TUITION CENTER, VARIOUS EATERIES, A CAR WASH, A MOTORCYCLE REPAIR SHOP AMONG MANY OTHERS PROVIDE FOR A LARGE CUSTOMER BASE WHICH ACTS AS A HUGE BENEFIT TOWARDS THE LAUNDROMAT. THE CONVINIENCE OF BEING ABLE TO WASH LAUNDRY WHILE SENDING KIDS TO SCHOOL, WHILE GETTING A MOTORCYCLE REPAIR, OR WHILE GETTING A BITE TO EAT TURNS JALAN RAJA MUDA MUSA INTO AN ECOSYSTEM OF MUTUAL BENEFIT TO BOTH USER AND OPERATOR.

CONTEXTUAL ELEVATION
RELATED CONTEXTUAL ACTIVITIES WITHING THE IMMEDIATE SETTINGS APART FROM THE LAUNDROMAT HOUSE, THERE ARE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES FORMED WITHIN THE ADJACENT UNITS. AN INTERPRETATION OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES WAS CARRIED OUT TO STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF USER BEHAVIOR UPON THE FUNCTIONS PROVIDED BY DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THAT OF A BARBERSHOP, POP UP KIOSK AND A CAFE. THESE VARIOUS SERVICES ALLOWS THE USERS OF THE LAUNDROMAT TO MAXIMIZE THEIR WAITING TIME UPON THE DUMPING OFF OF THEIR LAUNDRY AT THE LAUNDROMAT. STUDIES STATES THAT A TYPICAL LOAD OF LAUNDY WASHING AND DRYING TAKES UP AN APPROXIMATE DURATION OF 1 HOUR, WITH 30 MINUTES FOR WASHING AND ANOTHER 30 MINUTES TO DRY VIA THE LAUNDROMAT DRYER. WITHIN THIS 1 HOUR, THE USERS OF THE LAUNDROMAT ARE ABLE TO GET A HAIRCUT AND HAVE THEIR MEALS, SAVING THEM TRAVELLING TIME AND MAXIMIZING THEIR TIME SPENT.
THIS ARRANGEMENT BENEFITS BOTH THE USERS AS WELL AS THE OWNERS OF THESE ESTABLISHMENTS, TURNING BOTH BUSINESS AND NECESSITIES INTO A MUTUALISTIC INVOLVMENT.

CONTEXTUAL SECTIONS
SECTION A-A NTS SECTION CUT A-A INDICATES THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE LAUNDROMAT HOUSE. THE LAUNDROMAT ACTS AS AN ACTIVE FUNCTIONAL FACADE PROVIDING A STOREFRONT OF THE BUILDING. THE WALLS WITHIN THE CENTRAL RESIDENTIALS WERE BROKEN DOWN, PROVIDING A WALKWAY THAT CONNECTS THE INITIAL INDIVIDUAL UNITS INTO ONE LONG SHARED SPACE. THE CANOPY WAREHOUSE AT THE END SERVES AS STORAGE, ALSO ACTING AS A SMALL LIVING SPACE (BEHIND THE PURPLE CURTAIN) FOR THE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS (SHORT TERM) THAT ARE CURRENTLY REMODELLING THE OPPOSITE RESIDENTIAL UNITS.
SECTION B-B NTS SECTION CUT B-B SHOWS THE SEMI-INDOOR ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE LAUNDROMAT HOUSE. IN THIS SECTION, CONSTRUCTION WORKERS ARE SEEN REMODELLING 3 UNITS OF INDIVIDUAL RESIDENTIAL UNITS ADJACENT TOWARDS THE EXISTING 2 UNITS OF RESIDENTIAL UNITS. THE FRONT OPERATES AS A CAFE THAT ALLOWS USERS OF THE LAUNDROMAT TO ORDER FOOD AND DRINKS WHILE WAITING FOR THEIR LAUNDRY TO BE WASHED AND DRIED.

URBAN THEORY: JAN GEHL’S LIFE BETWEEN BUILDING
HUMAN ACTIVITIES
PHYSICAL PERSONALENVIRONMENT SETTING
THE LIFE BETWEEN BUILDINGS REQUIRES PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT & ACTIVITY TO FORM SOCIAL ACTIVITES. THERE ARE 3 CATEGORIES OF ACTIVITIES: NECESSARY ACTIVITIES, OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES & SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. • NECESSARY ACTIVITIES ARE THE COMPULSORY ACTIVITIES THAT HAPPEN UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES. • OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES OCCUR UNDER FAVORABLE CONDITIONS. • SOCIAL ACTIVITIES TAKE PLACE UPON THE ACTIVATION OF SPACE WHEREBY IT FORMS WHEN THE NECESSARY ACTIVITIES MEET THE OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES. THE INTENSITY OF ACTIVITIES ARE HIGHLY DEPENDING ON THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT AND REQUIRE COMMUNITY THAT HAS THE COMMON INTERESTS OR BACKGROUNDS. GOOD QUALITY PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF A SPACE ACT AS THE CATALYST TO ENCOURAGE RESULTANT ACTIVITIES WHEREAS THE COMMUNITY ADDS FLAVOUR TO CREATE A SENSE OF BELONGING TO THE PLACE.

SUMMARY: THE CURRENT FUNCTION OF THE SELECTED STREETS ACT AS A PASSING POINT & TRANSITIONAL POINT, WHICH IS MERELY A ROUTE FOR PEOPLE TO CARRY OUT THEIR NECESSARY & OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES. HOWEVER, THERE’S LACK OF INTERACTION BETWEEN HUMAN & THE STREETS. REVITALISING THE RIVER TURN IT INTO A VISTA POINT.
PRECEDENT STUDY: URBAN STREET|CAT STREET, TOKYO & URBAN STREAM|CHEONGGYECHEON STREAM, SEOUL
THE URBAN STREETS & URBAN STREAM ARE ACTIVATED WHERBY NECESSARY ACTIVITIES & OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES HAPPENING IN THE PUBLIC SPACES. THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTS HAVE ENCOURAGED SOCIAL ACTIVITIES TO HAPPEN NATURALLY, WHERBY THE DISCTINCT BOUNDARIES BETWEEN PUBLIC & PRIVATE HAS BEEN LIFTED.
