TRAVEL PART 1 CHURCH ST PAUL, MALACCA “ History is formed by the people, those who have power and those without power. “

ST PAUL's CHURCH, MALACCA
S
t Paul’s Church is a ruin on top of St. Paul’s Hill, which was originally called Malacca Hill. Following the Portuguese conquest, Malacca Hill was renamed Monti Ali Maria, or Mary’s Hill. St. Paul’s Church started off as a small chapel built by the Portuguese, and was called the Chapel of the Mother of God or Igreja de Madre de Deus, or Our Lady of the Hill Nossa Senhora do Oiteiro, also called Our Lady of Grace, or Nossa Senhora da Annunciada. According to 16th century Portuguese chronicler, João de Barros, Nossa Senhora do Oiteiro was not built by the Portuguese administrators, but by a Portuguese fidalgo (nobleman) called Duarte Coelho. He did it as an act of gratitude following his miraculous escape from a tempest in the South China Sea. He dedicated the chapel to Our Lady of Grace, or Nossa Senhora da Annunciada, in 1520-21. In 1548, the chapel was passed on to the Society of Jesus by the archbishop of Goa, Don Albuquerque. Francis Xavier (later Saint Francis) received the title deeds on behalf of the Society. In 1556, the Portuguese enlarged the chapel, adding a second storey to it. Further renovation was carried out in 1590 with the addition of a tower. It was then called the Church of the Mother of God. The Church of the Mother of God and a school were located on the top of the hill.

The residence of the Portuguese officers were built on the slope and the rest of the Portuguese population were at the bottom of the hill. The houses were built of brick and wood. Within this fortress was a town hall, two hospitals, and five churches. When the Dutch wrestled Malacca from the Portuguese in 1641, they destroyed all the Portuguese buildings except for the fortress, on which they placed the Dutch emblem. This can be seen today on the remaining gate of the fortress, the Porta de Santiago. The Dutch also took over the Portuguese chapel on top of the hill, repaired and reconsecrated it into a Dutch Reformed Church, calling it St. Paul’s Church, a name which remains until today. The Dutch used it for their worship for the next 112 years, until they built their own church at the foot of the hill, Christ Church. St. Paul’s Church was then abandoned. When the British took over Malacca in 1824, the St. Paul’s Church has lost its tower. However, the British added a lighthouse in front of it. And instead of being used it as a place of worship, the Church became a convenient storehouse for British gun powder. The Statue of St. Francis Xavier was added in 1954.

Laman Seni Street Art Gallery, Section 2 Shah Alam
F
or my second trip, i decided to go to the nearest place located from Intec. Therefore, Section 2 caught our attention because of the lively street art gallery. Known by most photographers and art lovers, the Laman Seni Shah Alam is actually a typical back alley. However, the unique part is that the walls are transformed into creative lively designs and murals, anticipating people to go there just to capture beautiful images.

el negra distro + studio, ipoh
T
he El Negra Distro & Studio is a cafe that will make Ipoh night owls happy as it observes a different opening hours from standard cafe timing, closing at either 1 am or 12 am depending on which day of the week. The cafe might be easy to miss because it’s on the first floor but I think the neon calligraphic chalk board will capture your attention, inviting you to go upstairs for a cuppa. The cafe is bright and spacious with a mixture of contemporary and DIY furnitures. I love the huge windows which were surprisingly open, and I really mean open all the way so you don’t just see what’s happening down there through the windows, you also hear what is happening down there. It was a bit hot despite the air-con was on as the windows were open. I like it that way because it gives you a semi-open-air environment, where you experience Ipoh in a different way – you are sitting upstairs, but it feels like you are sitting on a sidewalk and you can do a bit of people watching. If you visit the cafe during rush hour like I did, you will literally feel the earth move under you feet as a result of loads of cars and lorries passing by.

what they have ?
E
l Negra has really simple menu with only two choices Roast Chicken (RM12) and Alfredo Beef Spaghetti (RM10). I was kind of surprised but not really because I’ve seen a restaurant in Penang serving only one dish. The chicken was roasted long enough to tear apart easily, yet at the same time the chicken remained moist and juicy within and at only RM 12, it’s a colorful dish accompanied by a handful of nutritious vegetables.’ There were more dessert choices like creme caramel, bred & butter pudding, tiramisu and cupcakes. The cheese cake (RM7) was lightly cheesy and lemony though I thought the base could be made of a more buttery and more solid cookie crumbs.

(5:26 am.) Suasana, atmosfera, udara. Dalam setiap degupan. Aku. Perlahan menusuk. Tiap-tiap hembusan mungkin berbeza. Tarik dalam-dalam. Biar hembusan akhir itu. Terpalit dia. Biar aku penuh kan dada ini. Dengan udara. Cinta. Jika hembusan tak bernyawa lagi. Dia pasti mengerti.
(Entah esok lusa.) Masa itu sungguh singkat walhal cuma sebulan dua. Hatta, aku belum puas merasi gelombang cinta milik engkau. Beri aku sedikit dua masa. Mungkin aku lupa. Yang cinta itu pernah ada.
(SAJAK LUKA) Malam. Sepi. Dalam gelap. Aku pinta. Pada tuhan yang esa. Jika aku punya masa. Walau sedetik dua. Agar. Dapat aku merasa. Bahagia. Yang tinggal sisa-sisa.
