Women often seem to be a source of boundless energy.

They’re running for office, starting businesses and devoting time and money to causes they care about.

They ski hard, push themselves in the mountains and push to close the deal.

You can read about ladies doing all those things and more in this edition of Jackson Hole Woman, the annual special section of the Jackson Hole News&Guide that celebrates accomplishments and people who aren’t often in the spotlight.

Some successful women start young.

Jessica Johnson, 10, and Hailee Brinton, 11, spent their Saturdays this summer at the Jackson Hole Farmers Market on Town Square. Their first product flopped, but they adapted quickly, creating some that sold well and netting more than $2,000 (see page 5).

Others take the fruits of a lifetime of success and give it to others, like the six philanthropists profiled (page 6).

After decades of rejecting the homemaking skills of their mothers and grandmothers, many women are embracing things like knitting, canning and quilting. Suddenly self-sufficiency is cool again (page 17).

To have it all, many working mothers rely on baby-sitters so they can attend work functions, classes or just take a break from their second fulltime job of mothering (page 26).

Women of all ages write their own scripts to become entrepreneurs.

ackson Hole living is a balancing act. Juggling a business, home life and fun in the mountains is a challenge. But some women have proved the circus act can be done.

There are plenty of female entrepreneurs standing strong in the middle of this ring.

“The strength of keeping lots of plates spinning at the same time is an amazing capacity,” Start Up Institute facilitator and entrepreneur coach Sandy Hessler said.

“The ability to really go for it, the ability to turn on different parts of their experience, is a great strength.”

Melissa Mattson had a hole in her plan. She had been working at the Art Association of Jackson Hole but had always wanted to start her own business. In January 2014 the idea hit her.

“I’ve always loved making doughnuts, but not on a commercial level, just, like, on a small scale. And I was like, ‘Well, I can do this. I can learn, I can teach. I can acquire the taste that it needs to make something sweet and

delicious.’ But I knew at the same time that I wasn’t going to be able to afford a retail shop starting off the bat here in town.”

Instead Mattson built her own space. She took off for Santa Cruz, California, where she picked up an old Airstream trailer and turned it into her doughnut-making kitchen. She now spends close to 14 hours a day slaving over her creations.

“You have to sell a ton of doughnuts to make rent,” she said.

Nom Nom Doughnuts is already popping out 600 to 700 homemade pastries a day, topped with dollops of raspberry glaze and other embellishments, or fried into apple fritters. They’re available across the valley, and not just limited to the Jackson Hole Farmers Market on Town Square or the fortunate earlymorning drunkard stumbling by her Airstream. Creekside Market, Cowboy Coffee, Pearl Street Market and Aspens Market, among others, carry Mattson munchies.

At the end of the day, past the strain on the feet and financial stress, Mattson stood by her buns to fill a void in Jackson’s epicurean culture.

“If you have the desire to work hard you can accomplish anything you want to do,” she said. “Any obstacles — financial, business — there’s ways around it. You

just have to be crafty.”

A couple of young girls who still have some time before their sweet teeth develop are already showing promise as young businesswomen. After several years of selling lemonade at skate competitions and on street corners, Jessica Johnson, 10, and Hailee Brinton, 11, of JessLee’s Kitchen, decided to take business to a higher level at the Town Square farmers market this summer.

“Me and Jess sort of wanted to turn it into something bigger,” Hailee said.

Her grandmother Cindi Brinton approached the girls with the idea of taking their talents to market.

“We’re going to do this,” Brinton told them, “but we’re going to actually do it as a business. I’ll front you the money, but you’re going to be businesswomen.”

Brinton was the financial backer, and the girls were the brains. They hopped online to order cups for lemonade, marketing stickers and a banner that noted they were raising money for college.

“We took the banner out of the box when it got here,” Brinton said, and it read, “working our way to a sweet college.”

They even ordered a tent and practiced setting it up before their first market of the season. That was before See ringleaders on 5

or Jen Calder, this winter may be just another season working hard at a job she loves with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s ski patrol.

But her 19th season will look a little different, because Calder will assume a new position on patrol: that of assistant director under newly minted director Drew Kneeland.

She will be the first female ski patroller to assume a management position among the 80 patrollers at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in the ski area’s 50-year history.

“I’m so passionate about my job, the mountain itself and the people I work with,” Calder said. “I feel as though I have a second family and a home away from home with the Jackson Hole Ski Patrol.

“I applied for the assistant director job because the opportunity presented itself, and I’m so excited for the challenge. I’m also very honored to have been given this opportunity in my industry and within the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.”

Kneeland couldn’t be more pleased with Calder’s promotion. He said the timing, along with the new cultural

shift of the organization, will complement Calder’s skill set as a seasoned patroller. And her attitude and personality will perfectly dovetail with the organization’s new leadership restructuring this season, he said.

“My first inclination when we started talking about the job and change in leadership was that she was really enthusiastic about making positive changes,” said Kneeland, who was appointed director

in March after serving nine years as assistant ski patrol director. “She wasn’t all about, ‘These are my skills,’ but she was more interested in the big picture, which is something we, I, wanted to move toward with ski patrol.

“She was looking at our potential in a positive way that will really help the organization, he said, and that really got my attention.”

With Kneeland’s promotion in March, Calder’s promotion

this summer, and fellow assistant director Tom Bartlett, the ski patrol has a new crop of leaders. Other leadership changes are in store as they appoint supervisors within the patrol.

Not only has patrol increased in size, Kneeland said, but a lot more people, particularly women, are applying for ski patrol positions.

“In the past — in the old days back in 1994, when I started — there wasn’t much

turnover, and a lot of people had been ski patrollers for a lot of years,” Kneeland said.

“But it has changed, and we have a lot of staff and a lot more turnover, and that presents more challenges on how to train people.

“We have been focused on a small patrol for a long time, and what I’m attempting to do is change the span of control and get more people in supervisor roles.”

Ski patrol in general is a highly male-dominated profession, and the same can be said at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, where women comprise less than 20 percent of employees.

Kneeland said ski patrol can have a “suck it up” attitude and can maintain an air of, “It’s always been done this way. Why change it?”

When Calder applied 18 years ago, she said, she was “very lucky” to get hired.

“It’s a tough group to break into,” Calder said. “The turnover is so low, and it’s a very sought-after job.”

Melissa Malm and Margo Krisjansons were the first females on the Jackson Hole patrol in the late 1970s. Calder said she had to prove herself when she was first hired, just as the women who came before her did.

help and training in the areas you know you need it.”

Although there are routine tasks of patrolling the resort’s borders, things can turn more serious quickly during avalanche mitigation work or when accidents happen.

“When the s--t hits the fan, you better be ready to respond,” Calder said.

“Our own lives and those we take care of are at risk on pretty much a regular basis. Yes, there are mentors, for sure, and we do a ton of training to back ourselves up.”

Kneeland agrees with Calder when she says that there should be a greater trend toward compassionate leaders who will take the time to listen to patrollers’ concerns and questions.

Kneeland said he started recognizing that need years ago.

“I can be the person that people come talk to,” Kneeland said. “And I saw that as a need within ski patrol.

Jen, being a female, is part of that cultural shift and was what I was looking for to complement the leadership that we have.

“Is it because she is a woman? I don’t know. But she is compassionate and someone who will lend an ear rather than saying, ‘Suck it up.’

Both those styles are complementary to one another.”

Calder lives in Driggs, Idaho, with her husband, Joe — who is the ski patrol director at Grand Targhee Resort — and her 10-year-old son, Bode.

working well past their bedtimes preparing “caramel apple nachos” and refreshments. The first batch did not go over well, so the girls refined their business strategy, changed their product and found a void in the farmers market.

“We decided to make butter, and that really worked,” Hailee said.

“That was something at the farmers market that people didn’t do.”

Each week they spent 15 hours separating cream, churning it, waiting for the butter to condense, adding flavors and churning it again.

“We had, like, blue cheese, garlic and parsley,” Jessica said. “We had lemon and fresh dill. Those are our savory kinds, and our sweet kinds were honey-butter, cinnamon-sugar and plain.”

After seven Saturdays, JessLee’s Kitchen netted more than $2,000 and garnered offers to sell the girls’ craft spreads at the Vertical Harvest store (once it opens) and maybe at their church.

Although waking up on cold mornings and having to work through them was tough, Hailee said she and Jessica are already talking about setting up a stand at next year’s farmers market and continuing their entrepreneurial endeavors.

“I want to run a business,” she said. “I just don’t know what I want the business to be.”

Susan Pieper knew. She had already been a tech executive, hedgefund recruiter and serial entrepreneur and was living in Tokyo by the time she decided to bow out of the rat race and trade it for the tranquility of the Teton forests.

“The decision to move to Jackson was in part because I had reached a point in my life where I wanted to give up the concrete jungle and knew I wanted to live in the mountains and start a business that related to this place,” Pieper wrote to the News&Guide.

On Thursday, Pieper is launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund her latest project: DMOS Collective Inc., which will sell “pro-quality, portable terrain jump tools.”

in terms of proving myself, that every day in this line of work you need to be ready for it all,” Calder said. “We are doctors, lawyers, investigators, police, avalanche experts, explosives experts, social workers, mountaineering specialists. And the list goes on.

“You have to come to work prepared with game on,” she said. “I love that I’ve chosen this career and now get to be a leader. What an honor.”

“DMOS came about because we realized that there was a market for shovels to be delivered in a format for how skiers, snowboarders and mountain bikers use them: portable, lightweight, rugged, durable and with special features for sculpting snow and dirt.”

As with every new endeavor, Pieper has faced challenges. She worked her way through male-dominated businesses and climbed to the top of most of them while also recognizing that not every project, regardless of the product’s quality, succeeds.

“If you’re good,” she wrote, “no one will stop you and you’ll be rewarded.

I don’t really put a lot of thought into the fact that my industry (the hard goods and action sports space) is also male dominated or that my target customer is a male, age 18-34. I’m a team builder at heart, and my passion is creating very talented and driven teams to accomplish very demanding goals.

“I’m a dreamer, adventurer, a ‘the sky is the limit’ person and just someone who sees the glass half full rather than half empty. In this way I don’t see gender as a barrier. Instead it’s an asset, I think, in that athletes don’t have to compete with me or my vision of what they need. They can own that space, and I’m comfortable with that.”

Not everyone is fit to be the ringleader. There is no set profile, Hessler said, and as these women can attest gender can be a great asset. On the macro level, she said, a gender gap still exists in dollars raised by investment bankers, venture capitalists and the like.

“There’s still a little bit of a boys club,” she said.

But here in Jackson, pride of the Equality State, getting ahead just means knowing when to reach out to someone whose strengths complement your own and finding the strength to muscle through the hardships.

“It takes a lot of resilience, persistence,” Hessler said. “The word of the day is ‘grit’ and deep belief in your vision.”

ny nonprofit in the valley will tell you that philanthropy plays an essential role in Jackson Hole.

The word “philanthropy” translates to “love for humanity,” which rings true for six female philanthropists in the valley who feel passionately about arts, animals and children.

Margot Snowdon grew up in a philanthropic family in New Jersey.

Around the age of 20 she began participating in her family’s foundation, the Hill-Snowdon Foundation, and at 30 she branched out on her own.

Snowdon serves on the board of directors of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole and on committees that grant funds for animals and conservation, and health and human services. Her focus is on social and social equality issues, housing, education and food in the community.

“What the philanthropic leadership in this community has done has made us a very thoughtful community,” Snowdon said. “How we understand our impact in our giving, it’s a very sophisticated philanthropic atmosphere.”

Donating has been a way of life for 28-year valley resident Berte Hirschfield and her late husband, Alan. She has enjoyed sitting on the boards of organizations such as the Grand Teton Music Festival. But it became apparent to her that there were people in need living in the valley who survived under the radar.

“I began to start different organizations that appealed to me that I thought would contribute to the valley in ways that were important,” Hirschfield said.

Although she feels strongly about all of the projects she’s involved in, she is most passionate about the ones she started. Jackson Hole Childcare Helpers, Keep Yellowstone Nuclear Free and the Pediatric Audiology Project were all created because of needs in the valley. Hirschfield not only supports causes financially but is also willing to get her hands dirty.

“If you care about something, get involved,” Hirschfield said, “and if it doesn’t exist, create it or participate in a way where you roll up your sleeves.”

The Hirschfields also donated money to Teton Youth and Family Services to create the Hirschfeld Center for Children, which seeks to help kids by strengthening families and preventing abuse and neglect.

Fifteen years ago Veronica Silberberg left the Big Apple for remote Jackson. She joined the Community Foundation in 2004 and has since

served on the boards of the Center of Wonder, Art Association, Dancers’ Workshop, Off Square Theatre Company and R Park.

“Philanthropy for me is really being able to have an impact so that the community is a better place and that there is more engagement and vitality,” Silberberg said.

Her focus is on helping the arts and education organizations work together, including through creative education and artist-in-residence programs.

“Jackson is such a special community,” Silberberg said. “I think it is a place where people feel that they can have a collective impact.”

Sophie Craighead supports diverse causes, from housing homeless pets to preserving the environment. She has sat on the board of PAWS of Jackson Hole, Teton County Pet Partners, aka PAL, Jackson Hole Community School, Craighead Beringia South and the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole.

“My passion in life has always been animals and animal welfare,” Craighead said. “I don’t know of any town whose animal organizations don’t need additional philanthropic support. This is true for Jackson as well.”

Sophie Echeverria defines philanthropy as good-heartedly sharing what you have appropriately.

She was a hardworking rancher and widow, struggling to make ends meet, with 50,000 sheep, six ranches and seven kids. The discovery of natural gas on two of her ranches propelled her toward giving back to others.

“I asked God, ‘Why did you give me this money?’ to which he replied, ‘I’m going to give you this money because you’ll do good with it,’” Echeverria said.

For a long time Echeverria gave money to orphans in the Middle East.

Losing her son Joseph in 2008 to cystic fibrosis led to hospital donations.

Every year she goes through the Old Bill’s Fun Run list and picks issues that touch her heart, particularly animals and children. She also supports the Jackson Hole Writers Conference.

A writer herself, she is working on a book of poems.

“I just love helping people,” Echeverria said.

All of these philanthropists have gravitated to areas where help is needed and have used their resources to benefit the community.

“I would define philanthropy as looking for ways to solve root problems,” said Katharine Conover, president of the community foundation.

“I think philanthropy is looking at the cause of an issue and addressing that,” she said. “Charity has a more micro focus and philanthropy has a more macro focus.”

Deepening roots drive the urge to serve New commissioner learns to balance political, creative lives — and a baby.

N

atalia Macker spends hours each week behind a heavy wooden desk in the Teton County Commissioners’ Chambers, eyes fixed on an iPad, stacks of proposals and county documents piled around her.

It’s a routine she’s getting used to, as the newest commissioner on the five-person board. That’s not to say politics are new to her; Macker campaigned for a Wyoming House of Representatives seat in 2014. It was that experience that eventually led her to where she sits now, as it taught her a few things about herself.

One, she’s the “strange beast of a person who liked door-knocking.” It was a way, she said, that humanized the political experience. The issues went from “being stories in the newspaper and the talking points in a campaign to being the people living out the challenge or the people behind the decision.”

While the news may have caused other mothers to slow

down, especially first-time moms, it only spurred Macker to ramp up. Part of that, she said with a grin, was maybe a bit of naivete. But the other part, the bigger part, was an internal calling to root into the community that baby Alistair would eventually call home.

“I’m not from here,” said Macker, who relocated to Hoback from Los Angeles with her husband, Thomas, in 2011. “But my son now is.”

Though the legislative run didn’t pan out, being appointed county commissioner is a job she’s equally passionate about. At the beginning of August, Macker was appointed to the seat left open when former chairwoman Melissa Turley resigned.

“I like that we’re neighbors with our elected officials,” Macker said. “I like bumping into people at the grocery store and knowing my bank teller. Now that I have a son, I really love that it does feel like it’s the whole community that’s participating in his life.”

There’s also the added perk that her new job is just right down the street from Off Square Theatre Company, where she works as the artistic director. It’s a part of her life that seems in stark contrast to her political career.

But the 31-year-old who graduated from Yale University with a degree in theater said her “deep down roots” are in acting and dancing.

And the two worlds aren’t as different as they may seem.

“In my work, we might have a play. And over there,” she said, gesturing to the county building, “at the end of the day we might have a road or a public park. But the steps to get there involve many different people, finding the right way to fund it, and making sure we’re serving the people we think we’re serving.”

It’s that synergetic spirit that former County Commissioner Turley said makes Macker well suited for the position.

“She brings an attitude of collaboration that’s really important,” Turley said.

Turley also lauded Macker’s willingness to jump in, and acknowledged her “strength as someone who may not have all the answers, but is really committed to finding them.”

It’s a commitment that Macker admitted still keeps her up at night. But one she’s grateful to have.

“I remember coming in one morning and saying to a few of my fellow commissioners, ‘I feel like I’m officially a commissioner now — I had my first sleepless night because of what we had on the docket today,’” she said, laughing.

“Just when I got my son sleeping through the night, now this job is keeping me up.”

n a state where many women’s accomplishments are in the history books, women in the real estate industry say the business climate is accepting and lucrative.

In Jackson Hole, 58 percent of the real estate agents are women.

“I think Wyoming has always been pro-women as far as work and business,” said Carol Linton, associate broker at LintonBingle Associate Brokers, her team at Jackson Hole Real Estate Associates, the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate.

“This region supports everyone who is entrepreneurial, be it male or female, young or old,” Linton said. “From the artistic to the brilliant start-upminded people who create their own businesses, the number of people who do this in the area is notable.”

Colbert hopes to help connect these women across all career fields. She does so with her monthly group Women Who Wine, a networking gathering that connects women over wine and food to share experiences and forge friendships, from ski buddies to business connections.

“Real estate is a natural profession for these type of women,” Colbert said.

“You work for yourself, you make your own hours, and you have full control of your success. That is a natural draw.”

Colbert got her start in residential real estate in 2008, when the market was at a low point. Finding support from more seasoned brokers, she learned to work hard no matter the circumstances.

“At the end of the day we are all competitors, but this is a small town, and it is in everyone’s best interest to be helpful,” she said. “If I can do a favor for a Realtor or accommodate a unique showing request, that is just a good way to do business.”

Terra has more than three decades of experience in Jackson Hole real estate.

“We are very lucky in this community,” Terra said. “I think there is camaraderie amongst the competition.

We try to work together for the greater good, and we care about this community. It is not about the next deal, it is about working together.”

Looking back on her successful career and the careers of women like Linton and Colbert, Terra said she was given an equal opportunity to succeed.

“I think women are so successful in the real estate profession because they are given equal opportunities for success,” she said. “It starts with that. Perhaps it is also true that women are generally better listeners, search for agreement and are great team players. However, I have also known many men for whom those statements would be equally true.”

Terra’s career has spanned the globe. After owning an English-language bookshop in Rome’s Piazza di Spagna she returned West to open a travel agency. Her thirst for a new challenge led her to real estate, not to mention the encouragement of her husband, who she describes as her biggest mentor.

“My husband says, ‘Karen listens to understand, and I listen to respond.’

He is busy responding to questions, and I am listening to what is behind the question and what is going on,” she said of their teamwork.

Real estate takes a commitment to detail and a drive to work hard that is readily apparent when you speak to a broker in the field. It also takes a love of seeing residents find their home.

“It is great to get locals into a home,” Linton said. “When you see someone who is a working professional with a young family and wants to stay in the community, to get them into a home that fits is very rewarding.”

Starting a business in a new land ‘You have to dream,’ says Latina entrepreneur on making it work.

T

he story of Iliana Vazquez is familiar. She moved from Mexico to Jackson for a seasonal job in the tourism industry, tried it for a year, went home, then returned to build a new life.

If you’ve ever eaten a torta in Jackson, purchased inexpensive trinkets for friends or gotten your mariachi music fix — and a beer to go with it — on a Saturday night, it is probably because of Vazquez.

As the owner of Presents, Nopalitos and Alameda, Vazquez’s influence is ubiquitous in the Latino community of Jackson Hole. It hasn’t always been that way; her connection to the community began years before she set foot in the Tetons.

In 1999, she made the move from Tlaxcala, Mexico, to join her brother who had already begun planting his roots in the valley. She found work as a housekeeper at Jackson Lake Lodge, but only lasted a year before heading back across the border.

“I wanted to come back in 2001,” she said, “but for something more.”

Upon her return to the valley, that initial experience and her innate drive led to her managing a 40-person workforce at the lodge, but that only lasted as long as her husband’s patience with his dishwashing gig.

“My husband had other aspirations,” Vazquez said. “Halfway through the season, we left the park and moved [to town].”

An idea was born They found an apartment on Aspen Drive, and soon expanded their family with a daughter born in 2004.

But both mother and father were still answering to someone other than themselves, no matter how much they appreciated their employers, the Barneses.

“We always wanted something different,” she said.

Vazquez’ mother started traveling back and forth from Mexico; the elder was responsible for bringing back goods that Vazquez could sell. They were basics, like curtains or shoes, but an import business was born.

“I was selling them out of my car,” she said, “but after my daughter was born it became more difficult. I needed a fixed place where I could do this.”

In 2008, Presents opened for busi-

ness, but finding brick and mortar did not alleviate the stress, just shifted it from one nuisance to another. The first establishment was in the plaza where Alameda is now, but another small-goods salesman was already in business.

“The owner started pressuring us to leave because it created competition,” Vazquez said, “so we left.”

But the professional tension followed them to the Highway 89 location.

“It was like swimming upstream because the guy here,” Vazquez said of her former neighbor, “was doing everything in his power to make sure it didn’t work out for us. My only weapon was kindness.”

A little determination It ended up working in her favor.

Whenever Vazquez would violate local regulations, it would be reported, and inspectors would show her the proper way to run her business.

“We started selling bread,” she said. “He called someone in charge of health and said we were selling bread. The people that he called came in and taught us how to do it correctly.

We kept doing things differently, others kept calling authorities; they kept teaching us how to do it right.”

In 2010 their nemesis finally threw in the towel and closed up shop, so Alex Roldan, Vazquez’s husband, recommended they buy the location. Alameda was established to expand the offerings of Presents, and Roldan began cooking the traditional food that he had been missing in the adjacent unit now known as Nopalitos.

Even through the success story, the climb has taken a toll on Vazquez. She has had to make personal sacrifices throughout her professional career.

“I can’t take time with family,” she said. “I can’t take time to rest. ... My mom taught me to be strong and fight for myself and my family. My family now is my husband and my daughter.”

And if anyone asked her, she’d say she’s happy.

“I’m alive for something,” Vazquez said. “I’m keeping myself busy, and I’m doing what I like to do.”

All it took was a dream and a little determination to leave her hometown, travel to a new country, let alone different culture where she still deals regularly with a language barrier.

“You have to dream,” she said. “You have to do whatever it takes to make that happen. Dream positive things, and [it] will benefit the community and bring you joy.”

Outdoor adventurer likes pushing limits Halpin believes in being smart, supporting other women.

A

dventure athlete Kelly Halpin learned the ropes by venturing into the mountains with smart people and avoiding unnecessary risks.

But that doesn’t mean she forgoes a good challenge. A fan of pushing the boundaries, her drive comes from somewhere deeper.

“You only do these things for yourself,” Halpin said.

Last July she and Tristan Greszko were the first to complete the Grand Teton Triathlon, aka the Picnic, self-supported. Invented by David Gonzales, it entails biking from Town Square to Grand Teton National Park, swimming across Jenny Lake, hiking the Grand Teton and then retracing the route.

Halpin, the first woman to complete the race, thrives on physical exertion.

“I feel a lot stronger as an athlete,” she said.

“I had no idea that mentally I could push myself that far.”

This summer Halpin and Bree Buckley decided to take on Gonzales’ second triathlon: the Moranic.

Similar to the Picnic but longer and more technical, it involves biking 25 miles to String Lake, hiking 3 miles to Leigh Lake, swimming 1.6 miles across Leigh Lake, climbing Mount Moran and, again, doing it in reverse.

After dangerous weather and severe dehydration, Buckley bowed out from exhaustion on the second swim across Leigh Lake. Halpin completed the Moranic in 32.5 hours.

“It’s not about claiming this title,” Halpin said.

“You need to be smart about it.”

Halpin met Buckley and Savannah Cummins this past summer, and the three have been busy pushing one another in the mountains. It has been an exhausting and exhilarating season for them. They have been documenting their excursions in the hope of inspiring other women through social media.

“We want to be role models in the sense of all girls getting together and pushing their limits,” Halpin said. “Think of what we can do without the fighting and the competition.”

Jackson Hole can be a competitive place, and Halpin thinks women are their own worst enemies.

Kelly Halpin says lots of women are “getting after it” but aren’t bragging about it on social media.

The sentiment rang true for Halpin, Buckley and Cummins, who each harbored misconceptions of the others before becoming good friends.

With so many guys dominating outdoor activities it’s hard for women to find one another, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there. After completing the Moranic, Halpin got word of women doing different picnics throughout the valley.

“I think there are tons of women who are getting after it, but they aren’t posting pictures or talking about it,” Halpin said. “I think most of the women who get after it don’t need to talk about it.”

Halpin believes that girls can push each other just as much as guys can, and she hopes women continue

to find one another. Her advice to other women is to put aside your preconceived notions, find a lady squad and go for it.

“Girl, listen to me: I hate cold water, I don’t swim,” Halpin said. “I got across that lake, it wasn’t pretty, but I got across it. Don’t let that stop you.”

She is grateful and appreciative of her recent excursions, likening her night swim across Leigh Lake to floating through the galaxy. Always on the go, she plans to spend the fall in Moab, Utah, crack climbing and possibly creating her own picnic.

Teton County School District No. 1’s new superintendent’s need to make connections with almost anyone she meets stems from her bond with her grandmother.

Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Chapman looked up to her grandmother at a young age.

“She had a gift for teaching and loving,” Chapman said. “She taught Sunday school. All the other kids wanted her to be their grandmother.”

When Chapman’s family moved from Kansas to Atlanta, she was distraught over the separation from her grandma. Luckily, her mom drove back to Kansas on occasion. She told the 5-year-old Chapman and her big brother, who were always fighting, that they could go see their grandmother if they could get along for the entire road trip.

“She said, ‘I don’t want to get in the car and drive this far with you two at each other’s throats,’” Chapman said.

“I literally laid down in the back seat of the car and stared at the ceiling for the entire drive.”

The separation from her grandmother didn’t last long. When Chapman was 8 her family moved back to Kansas. There Chapman helped her grandma teach Sunday school.

Though teaching was an original passion of Chapman’s, she found other talents.

“One of the defining moments for me was in sixth grade,” she said. “This great-looking red-headed girl came and sat next to me in class.”

Unable to communicate with her new classmate, who was deaf, Chapman decided to study sign language.

“The only place you could take a sign language class at that time was at the junior college,” she said. “They let this 13-year-old take a college class.”

It turned out she had a knack for learning languages. She liked that she could communicate and connect with even more people.

When it was time to go to college Chapman left her grandmother’s side for the second time to study at Pepperdine University in California.

There she learned French. After three years of school, in 1989 Chapman was ready to return home. She took a job with Applebee’s.

“I did all their training and coordinated store openings for them,” Chapman said.

She excelled at the job. But after a while, she said, “I thought to myself, ‘In the overall scheme of things, does this work really matter?’”

Inspired by her grandmother’s and her mother’s teaching skills, Chapman earned a French-teaching certificate and a master’s degree in curriculum instruction.

“In the first class I taught I was writing on the board and was thinking to myself how excited I was to be there and teaching,” Chapman said.

“I turn around, and there was a kid mooning the class. My entire teacher training and all my poise went out the window.”

She saw the student who had embarrassed her later in the day.

“I said, ‘Hey, you’re in my first-hour class,’” Chapman said. “He said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘You have a real problem. That thing’s broken. You mooned my class today. It’s broken. It has a crack in it.’”

He laughed, and she knew she had connected with him.

“It was a risk on my part, but I knew I had to connect with him,” she said.

That taught her that the most important thing to do as an educator is to build relationships with students.

Lucky pants She kept that mentality throughout her years as a teacher, high school and middle school principal, associate superintendent of educational services and associate superintendent for secondary administrative services.

Chapman moved from Kansas to Jackson this past summer. Her new position came through happenstance.

She read a magazine ad for the position of superintendent for Teton County School District No. 1 and thought it would be fun to apply.

Visiting Jackson for her interview this year, Chapman and daughter Olivia knew they belonged in the valley, despite a few bumps in the road.

Chapman’s luggage didn’t arrive with her at Jackson Hole Airport, so she bought an interview outfit at Kmart. Her clothes did make their way to her hotel room on time, so she opted to wear what she had packed. But her daughter calls the Kmart pants her mother’s “lucky pants.”

Sometimes Chapman wears her lucky pants to her new job, a position she is excited to have.

For her first months as superintendent starting July 1, Chapman has made it a priority to help develop curriculum and to visit as many classrooms as possible to forge relationships with the people she finds are the most important: the county’s students.

College director tunes in to community Thulin makes sure CWC programs are tailored to Jackson Hole.

S

usan Thulin lives at the intersection of art and education.

The director of Central Wyoming College in Jackson began art classes at an early age. While growing up in Pittsburgh she was invited to participate in the Tam O’Shanter program at Carnegie Mellon University. The program allowed her to take classes every Saturday, starting in fourth grade and continuing through high school.

“That made a huge impact on me in a couple of ways,” Thulin said. “From an art standpoint, art was very important. It was an opportunity for excellent instruction, and I learned and was exposed to a lot.

“Other than that,” she said, “I realized later on ... that if you start working with a child at that age ... you can change the way they think and you can change their capabilities. You can make a huge impact.”

That realization, Thulin said, was the “thread” in her life between art and education.

Thulin studied art at Connecticut College. But after spending more than a year at California College of Art in San Francisco she realized she was a Westerner at heart. She lived in the Bay Area for about seven years after college, during which time she earned a Master of Business Administration from Columbia San Francisco.

“That ended up in the long run being a great combination,” she said.

Thulin moved to Jackson Hole when she was 28 and immediately began to sew art and education together.

She quickly took a job as director of the Art Association and reintroduced the education program.

Three kids later, however, she found that working for a nonprofit was too costly. So she undertook a variety of projects, such as freelance marketing consulting and teaching art. She helped found the Cultural Council of Jackson Hole and pARTners and served on the committee that established the Center for the Arts.

While teaching art classes for the Art Association and Central Wyoming College, Thulin noticed that many of the classes offered by the two organizations were identical.

“Sometimes even with the same teacher,” she said.

“I went to both organizations and said, ‘This is silly. The town is too small to have this type of competition.

They listened. Central Wyoming College hired Thulin to facilitate that collaboration and eventually asked her to join its team full time.

“I love this community,” Thulin said. “There are so many opportunities here with the many, many, many nonprofits. ... If we work collaboratively and are conscious of what each group is doing, we can strengthen each other and we can provide thoughtful opportunities.”

Thulin is now the director for Central Wyoming College in Jackson. Her job, she said, is to evaluate needs that are specific to Jackson and communicate those needs to the deans in each academic department.

One such need, she said, is employment. Especially in the summer and winter, Jackson businesses need all

the help they can get.

“We simply do not have the permanent population to address it and do not have the housing to support those who could come in on a temporary basis,” Thulin said.

Her students are the solution. Thulin has changed the course sequencing in the college’s culinary and hospitality school so that students take classes for 10 weeks in the spring and fall and find internships with local businesses during peak season. The new scheduling starts this fall.

“Resorts, lodging and restaurants in town have been very supportive,” Thulin said.

She is working with deans to explore what other programs can work within that structure. She wants to see at least half of the college’s programs follow suit, she said.

Central Wyoming College “can offer rich, high-quality programming because we’ll have enough students to support that, and the impact on the community is simply that we have people that will work,” Thulin said.

She is also working with the housing plan to ensure that students have places to live here during the school year.

Thulin is still an artist. She paints and shows her work around town.

What her own success and the success of her students boils down to, however, is education.

“I believe that lives can change with education,” Thulin said. “People need that opportunity. They need that support.

“If an individual can honestly assess what their strengths are and where their passions are, they can really become successful as people.”

hen meeting Meg Petersen — or “Movie Meg” as she is fondly known around town thanks to her role as the manager of Jackson’s Movie Machine — it’s only fitting to ask, “What is your favorite movie?” “‘The Big Lebowski,’ ‘Bad Santa’ or ‘Almost Famous,’” she said.

Petersen smiled as she talked about “Almost Famous,” which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, the same anniversary Petersen is celebrating at the movie theaters, and she invoked the film’s lead, William Miller, who said, “Please quote me warmly and accurately.”

Petersen first came to Jackson during the summer of 1999. Originally from Maine, she went to college in California where she majored in film.

After graduation, she returned to Wyoming, but not because of the skiing.

“I didn’t come back because the skiing was going to be so sick,” she said.

“I came back because I liked who I could be here. I felt like I could be independent and strong and be exactly who I wanted to be without expectations from my family or the pressures of living in a city. I felt like this was the right place for me.

“But then I did learn that the skiing is sick,” Petersen said. “And mountain biking is fun, and so many other things here are super fun.”

A slew of jobs — from working at a ranch to the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort — quickly led her to a temporary job as projectionist at the movie theater.

Fifteen years later, she now manages the two theaters, Jackson Hole Twin Cinemas and Movieworks Cinema. Her commitment to entertaining the community led to her nickname, Movie Meg. “You don’t choose your own nicknames. I have several. Most of them are some derivative of ‘Meg’ — Meglet, Megatron or just Tron, Meggles, Megglesworth, Meggers,” she said.

“But beyond nicknames, I’ve come to learn that I am widely known as Movie Meg. I’m pretty sure I’m the only Movie Meg in town.”

From scheduling pre-movie commercials and programming to updating the website, Movie Meg has her hands in many facets of the entertainment company.

Petersen also tries to ensure the programming at the theaters is inclusive for all of the Jackson community.

In 2014 she brought in the Spanish

version of “The Book of Life.” She continues to look for more opportunities to cross cultural borders.

“The movie did equally as good if not better in Spanish,” she said. “Hispanics are a very big part of our community, and it was great to do that.”

But when Petersen is not at the movie theater, she spends her summer days exploring the region on her dirt bike.

“Mountain biking has been taken over by dirt biking,” she said, “although there are not a lot of women who dirt bike in this town.

“I definitely love skiing,” she said, “but a few years ago I decided I needed a summer hobby. It is really hard but really rewarding, and it takes you to some really cool places.”

Although the Jackson area is limited as far as available dirt-biking terrain, Petersen is thankful that with just a quick jaunt over Teton Pass, the Big Hole Mountains offer ample riding and different terrain to quench her thirst for adrenaline.

“It seemed like it would be a good challenge and would be fun. No one seems to be sad on a dirt bike,” she said. “Out here there is so much area and terrain and to limit yourself to what you can see human powered is hard. Dirt biking is a great way to see different places.”

Petersen frequents the Big Holes with a group of women who share her passion for the motor sport, such as Kate’s Real Food owner Kate Schade, adding that to be successful in the sport, you have to “let go of a little bit of self-preservation.”

“This community has strong women and adventurous women,” Petersen said. “You don’t find tough women like this everywhere.”

Petersen hopes the heavily maledominated sport continues to be more welcoming to women. Schade and Petersen are helping to spread the word and get more women to embrace the sport.

For a woman as active and driven as Petersen, her words of wisdom for finding motivation are simple: “Find your own inspiration.”

“No one is going to drag you out of bed,” she said. “You have to get out of bed in the morning and put your shoes on and do it. But starting to do it, that becomes inspiring to do more. Once you’ve tried a little bit you’ll want to get better and go up that hill or ski that mountain. You figure out how to reach those goals.” ​ontact Kate Hull via features@ C jhnewsandguide.com.

Theater troupes provide leading roles Talented women are onstage and behind the scenes.

W

hen Nicole Madison moved to Jackson from New York she was taking a somewhat crazy step for a professional Equity actor.

Having a home base in a small town when you are allowed to perform only for professional theater companies seems on its face like asking for your career to hit a dead end.

In Jackson Hole things are a little different, thanks to Off Square Theatre Company.

“There have been talented women throughout my time here that both brought me here and have kept me here with Off Square since,” Madison said. “It’s how I keep making it work in a place like Jackson Hole.”

Madison herself has become one such talented woman driving Jackson theater.

Along with being an actor and artist who performs around the country, she helps design curriculum for Off Square’s youth theater programs and directs the annual young people’s musical.

This year it will be “Mary Poppins.”

Madison said Off Square Artistic Director Natalia Duncan Macker is one of the people who keep her living and working in the Tetons rather than in a more traditional theater community like New York.

“It’s a great community here with some really great, talented women driving things,” she said.

Off Square’s staff directory alone is evidence of that. The entire company, from executive director Clare Payne Symmons on down, is led by women.

And it’s not the only theater group that depends on the energies of women to run.

Riot Act Inc., a community theater company, was founded by a group of artists, including current Artistic Director and driving force Macey Mott.

Mott is involved in most Riot Act productions as director, producer or actor, or sometimes more than one, and as a costume designer for other local productions. She will star in the company’s production of “Red Herring,” which opens Oct. 29.

female talents, including assistant director Heather Best and cast member Lindsay Burgess.

Best has been involved in a number of Riot Act productions, including “The Threepenny Opera” and last year’s “Living Dead in Denmark,” a zombie-fied salute to Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

She has stepped into the assistant director’s spot for “Red Herring.”

Burgess, a math teacher by day, also appeared in “Living Dead,” as well as other Riot Act shows, including “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Along with the two major theater companies, women feature prominently at the Jackson Hole Playhouse, where owner Vicki Garnick brings in

young professionals and hopefuls each summer, frequently including her daughter Savannah.

Even in the improv world, Jackson has an in with the Laff Staff. Veteran Kjera Strom Henrie, of Teton Valley, Idaho, is the female leader of a team with an even gender split.

All serve to prove Madison’s point.

“There are just a lot of opportunities around here, thanks to the talented community,” Madison said. “The professionals are just the tip of the iceberg.”

resurrected in digital era Canning, quilting and knitting are cool once again.

sed to be if you hoped to get through the winter you had to put up in the fall whatever vittles you could and hope they lasted till spring.

If your shirt got ripped you fixed it.

If your breeches wore out you made replacements. A warm woolly hat was something you knitted, not something you bought.

Times change, however. People invented machines that could in a few minutes spit out a truckload of canned beans or peaches. Overseas labor made it cost-effective to buy a new shirt for a couple of bucks. And the sexual politics of the ’60s and ’70s no doubt helped marginalize survival skills that came to be dismissed as “homemaking.”

But not everyone put down the knitting needles and mason jars. And in fact many of those skills are coming back into vogue, being practiced by a whole new generation. Suddenly it’s cool to knit, artsy to quilt, socially conscious to can.

“My feeling is that skills such as canning, quilting, sewing, etc., are coming back because people want to eat more organically, and items are so expensive to buy in many cases,” longtime Wilson Homemakers member Barbara “Happy” Weston wrote in an email. “Also the younger generations are beginning to realize what heirlooms items that are handmade are. It is wonderful to

be able to tell people that Grandma, Mom, Auntie ... made something, thus displaying a family talent, or that you canned that fresh veggie or fruit.”

Jordan McCoy teaches such skills through the University of Wyoming Extension. “‘Real food’ is a huge buzzword,” she said. “It’s a whole movement.

Also there’s a big movement for [nongenetically modified food] and organics. People are wanting to get back to their roots.”

As a result, attendance at the canning and preserving classes she teaches

through Extension has grown quickly.

“I could do one a month,” she said.

“People want to do it correctly, and you definitely need to do it right.”

Kelly Smith is director of operations for Slow Food in the Tetons. The nonprofit’s mission is to promote sustainable growing and consuming habits, with an emphasis on using as much locally grown food as possible. It has taught many canning and preserving workshops over the years, Smith said.

“It’s more about not just learning about where food comes from,” she said, “but also learning to put it up and learn-

ing to keep it through the winter.”

Buying from farmers markets or from a community-supported agriculture operation is great, but it becomes even more helpful when you know how to make your greens, beans and roots last beyond harvest.

“You make your food last longer,” she said, “and you’re learning to not waste it.”

These homemaking skills apply not only to the kitchen. Carolyn Little is an avid knitter who has over the past 10 or so years made mittens, hats, scarves, vests, sweaters and more.

“It’s very satisfying,” said Little, who works at Rachel Stam’s store Knit on Pearl and also teaches classes. “And the act of knitting tends to be really relaxing and meditative.”

She didn’t learn the skill as a girl — “I was a tomboy,” she said — but when she became a mother she was introduced to the art by her sister-in-law and got into it “by accident.”

“I quickly realized it kept me sane during those years with a toddler,” she said. “Knitting is restorative, it’s therapeutic, and it’s also productive. It satisfied my creative itch. And it’s also logical and mathematical, and it’s rhythmic.”

As for why such skills went through downtimes, people point to a lot of factors. When it comes to preserving food, for example, it was easier to buy canned food than to do it yourself, McCoy said.

“But then people were realizing they wanted to be healthier, wanted to save money here and there,” she said.

“Sometimes it doesn’t actually save money, but people want to go back to See pioneer on 30

Women roll up their sleeves for causes Strong leaders put activism to work for equal rights, food security, sustainability.

T

here is plenty of room for passion in Jackson Hole, but putting it to use comes with a ton of work.

Women who have stepped up for causes in the valley report few barriers to their involvement, but all caution that getting involved in a new movement means eating, sleeping and breathing your cause for much longer than you’d expect.

“It was definitely worth it,” said Kristin Ladd, one of the co-directors of 2014’s production of “The Vagina Monologues,” “but it was also definitely so much work.”

The theatrical production saw assistance from the Dancers’ Workshop and community theater company Riot Act, but much of the blood, sweat, tears and printer paper came from Ladd and fellow director Anne Marie Wells.

The duo was inspired to stage Ensler’s provocative ode to female genitalia and sexuality as part of worldwide “V Day” efforts for sexual assault awareness, and give net proceeds to the Community Safety Network.

Their donation check amounted to more than $2,000 in the end. The show was well-received and attended for both of its nights on stage.

However, those are just the highlights.

“Everyone was receptive to the idea when we told them about it,

and we got so much help with people donating things we needed and getting on board with being part of the cast,” Ladd said. “But being involved ourselves meant that every emergency was our problem, every phone call and meeting was our thing, every decision came down to us.”

Ladd said that with the exception of the message of the show and the female-centric themes of the entire effort, being a woman was all but secondary, and few of the women who took part, from cast members to Ladd’s and Wells’ directing mentor Macey Mott of Riot Act, felt any hesitation about stepping out in front of a community.

The Jackson community is more than willing to let a woman lead, but an activist of either gender is

largely on their own to build momentum.

In the early days of the Hole Food Rescue, founder and executive director Ali Dunford operated out of her garage.

Every spare moment between shifts at Nick Wilson’s in Teton Village went to holding meetings, training volunteers to go on rescue shifts and doing most of the administrative and grunt work either on her own or with the assistance of her then-roommate Sami Stasi.

Dunford sorted compost by hand, spent her own money on food collection bins, repaired the single cumbersome bike trailer that humanpowered volunteers used on their shifts and took the lion’s share of pickups herself.

Gender was the last thing on Dunford’s mind at the time. She needed all the reliable people she could get, and pressed most of her closest friends into service.

Like Ladd and Wells, she got attention and assistance from a more established name — in her case the Jackson Food Cupboard — but the effort was a true test of her passion.

“Every day I see the need now that the box is open,” Dunford said shortly after beginning her efforts.

“Pandora has arrived.”

Sometimes, the structure is ready, but the top spot is up for grabs.

That was what Katie Dahlgren found when she and other construction professionals worked to bring a chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council to Wyoming.

“I absolutely don’t want to make it sound like this was all me,” she said. “Because it wasn’t. All I did was step up when they needed someone to be board president at first.”

Dahlgren, whose full time work is for Big D Signature in Jackson, already was certified to work on projects with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, status, which denotes sustainably built projects, and was eager to help spread sustainable construction to her colleagues in the valley.

“It’s something I definitely believe in very strongly, and here was something right in front of me I could do to promote it,” she said.

“It’s always a lot of work to keep a cause like that in front of people, but eventually it gains momentum.

You just have to be willing to be that person who steps up and does it.”

Nonprofits give a leg up where needed From career training to providing shelter to mentoring, their focus is on women and girls.

A

t least six nonprofits are making the valley a better place for women and girls.

Equipoise, a private charitable foundation, has a mission to enrich and encourage the vision, voice and visibility of women and girls across Wyoming.

Board members accomplish that by listening to women who have ideas they want to develop. With the help of Equipoise they incubate those ideas through seed funding. If an idea is viable it becomes a standalone program or part of another organization.

Founder and President Mickey Babcock believes Equipoise has an important place not only in Jackson but across the state.

“When I was talking to a college friend of mine who had helped start the Wyoming Women’s Foundation, I asked her who the other gender-specific funders in the state were, and she laughed and said I was talking to the other,” Babcock said.

Wyoming has the second-largest gender pay gap in the U.S. — 69 cents to the dollar — ahead of only Louisiana. That gap goes against Wyoming’s state motto, “equal rights.”

The difference between what women and men earn translates to lost wages and retirement benefits, but it also affects the women’s families and the communities where they live.

Womentum, a nine-month-long program that matches women with mentors, started with the help of Equipoise. Womentum supports women interested in furthering their careers, cultivating leadership skills and launching creative endeavors.

Womentum also hosts workshops.

This year the annual Women in Leadership Luncheon on Nov. 5 will

feature Alexis Owen, founder of the Young Philanthropists Foundation and director of philanthropic services with First Western Trust. Owen will also conduct an evening workshop, “From Beginner to Breadwinner: the Changing Relationship of Women and Money.”

“As girls we compete against one another, and at some point we discover that we can be each other’s

best asset, ally and resource,” Womentum Program Director Caryn Flanagan said. “We can open up our vulnerabilities and get to the heart of what drives us in our careers and our personal lives.”

Womentum’s No. 1 goal is to make sure the program is on solid ground and sustainable. With about 200 graduates of the mentoring program, See leg up on 21

Womentum is creating social programming. And it has been looking at the possibility of exporting its work model to other communities.

“Their accomplishments are diverse and great,” Flanagan said of the women who have gone through the mentoring program.

Amy Manhart and Julie D’Amours founded Girls Actively Participating in 1997 to create opportunities for girls to be together and step out of predefined roles. The middle school years are a pivotal time in girls’ lives. What girls do at that age and the experiences they have affect who they become as adults and the choices they make.

GAP is a free after-school program for middleschool girls. Participants meet once a week for an hour and a half. Last year 70 girls were involved in the program, with 35 of them attending meetings regularly.

ing things,” said Jess Yeomans, executive director and program manager. “To introduce the girls to opportunities that make the community stronger by understanding who they are specifically and having the confidence to go out and do what they want to do.”

Yeomans wants GAP to be a safe, judgmentfree zone where they can grow in the presence of other girls and learn how to help one another rather than feel competitive.

Soroptimist of Jackson Hole, known in the valley for its fundraiser Bras for a Cause and its annual Christmas Tree Festival, is part of an international women’s service organization whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in the community. Soroptimist of Jackson Hole fo-

“It is nice to have a women’s networking group,” board member Anne Schuler said. “There is a nice bonding that happens.”

Each year the Jackson club gives out education scholarships. It also works with St. John’s Medical Center by raising money for women who can’t afford medical services. And it works with other nonprofits, too. One is the Community Safety Network, which helps victims of domestic abuse, stalking and sexual assault.

IRENE AYRES, ELIZABETH Cowles, Margaret Smith, Eleanor Davis—these names don’t ring a bell for most Teton climbers. But they should. These four women were among a handful of alpinists during the early days of Teton exploration, achieving both first ascents and first female ascents around the range.

While some of the first female ascents came years, if not decades, after those by men, the achievements of these women are still remarkable. At the time, it was expected men would explore mountains; these women not only had to have the physical strength and skills to make it to a summit, but also the emotional and mental mettle to buck society’s idea of what they should and/or could do.

In 1924, Paul Petzoldt guided local landowner Geraldine Lucas, a fiftyeight-year-old former schoolteacher, to the top of the Grand Teton. While hers is often regarded as the first female ascent of the Grand—immortalized by a dramatic photo of Lucas standing with an American flag at the summit—it wasn’t.

Brewer blends science and creativity Snake River Brewing’s only female brewer combines her passion for science with her love of beer.

K

elley Rabjohns has always liked science. She studied geology at Boston College and later earned a master’s in water chemistry from the University of Oregon.

Some affectionately call her “Rocky,” a nod to her undergrad studies. But others know her better as the girl who spends half her time studying beerspoiling bacteria and the other half brewing beers, some of her own design and the others being the longstanding staples of Snake River Brewing. Her official title: brewer/scientist.

“It’s definitely a good blend of science and creativity,” she said.

Like many brewers, Rabjohns began her beer career with home brewing. The summer after college she landed a position at Snake River as the brewing intern. The position gave her the opportunity to learn about beer, but most of her time on the clock was spent entrenched in tasks like quality control and cleaning.

Rabjohns wanted to learn how to brew, so she also spent most of her extra time picking the brains of the brewers and experimenting with her own concoctions in attempt to figure out how to make a really great beer.

Which is never your first, she said, though you always think it is.

“Everything that you make is going to taste pretty good,” she said.

With a little distance and a little more experience, it’s easier to determine that the cloves added to the IPA maybe made it “slightly undrinkable.”

But experimenting is part of the process, as is the spirit of collaboration, which is what led her to the recipe Rabjohns recently brewed with co-worker Krissy Zinski Albert.

Their ale was brewed as part of International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day, an event that encourages female brewers to join together to cre-

ate beers that all fall under a certain umbrella of parameters, such as color and which type of hops to use. All beers made for the project are branded with the same moniker. This year’s was “Unite Red Ale.” Thus Babeforce Unite Red Ale was born, a sour ale with a reddish color and a slight sweetness.

While there is a science behind how good microbrews are made — for example, Rabjohns had to tinker with the ingredients in the Babeforce recipe so the ale displayed the correct color — the taste was inspired by something much more simple: what the girls like to drink.

“Krissy loves sour beer,” Rabjohns said. Thus “it was tart.”

While Rabjohns is valued as a brewer/scientist at

Snake River, Albert said she is also an invaluable voice for the industry itself. She is quick to build rapport with patrons, especially the female demographic, and will spend hours talking to women about how beer is brewed.

“She’s just following her passion, and she’s good at it,” Albert said. “People don’t know quite all that goes into it, and to have a woman explain it to you is different.”

Rabjohns said, “The more you know about something, the more you enjoy it.

“If you think you don’t like beer, you probably haven’t had the right one for you.”

Services simplify search for baby-sitters Whether you need a last-minute fill-in or ongoing child care, they will find someone for your kids.

F

inding a baby-sitter has been the bane of many a mother’s existence since time immemorial.

You might have a work function or a dinner to go to with your spouse, or perhaps there is an art class you’d like to attend one afternoon. Maybe you just need to take a hike unaccompanied by the pitter-patter of little boots.

A baby-sitter is needed for you to do those things.

But where do you turn?

Sometimes you’re lucky enough to have a sibling or a parent nearby who can easily fit the babysitting bill. Or maybe you have a willing and able teenage neighbor.

Occasionally, frantic Facebook posts work.

Often however, a parent comes up empty-handed, and the sitter search becomes anything but simple.

Luckily the valley is home to at least three services that can help: Jackson Hole Babysitting, Jackson Hole Nannies and Playtime in the Tetons.

While using a professional service can cost a bit more than what the average high school or college student charges per hour, the immediate reliability of getting child care in a pinch can make it worth the expense.

“Our prices reflect the fact that we have older professional sitters over age 21,” Jackson Hole Babysitting owner Kelly Gorski said. “They are also CPR-certified professionals in the community, and we also do background checks.”

At any given time there are 30 sitters who work for her service throughout the year.

Gorski said 20 percent of her clients are locals, and 80 percent are tourists, although those statistics depend on the time of year. In the offseason that percentage flip-flops.

“Locals use us all year round, especially when high school kids who might have been sitting all summer are back in school,” Gorski said. “We offer locals a discount: $2 off per hour during offseason.”

is $20 for one child and $22 for two, with a fourhour minimum.

Jackson Hole Nannies is pretty pricey in high season — $50 an hour for one to two children — but hourly child care is $20 in the offseason. Playtime in the Tetons is competitive at $25 for one to three kids.

Mariam Diehl, mom of one and owner of the eponymous Diehl Gallery, said she has used Jackson Hole Babysitting in a pinch over the years.

“It’s a fantastic service, but it is not my go-to on a regular basis,” she said. “I mostly use independent baby-sitters.”

The successful, busy working mother depends

on various forms of child care and after-school activities for her 7-year-old son, Quinlan, so she can handle the myriad responsibilities that go with running an art gallery.

“Between swimming, skiing, Kid’s Club and such, he has something every day so that I can work,” Diehl said.

But even the best-laid plans can go awry, and sometimes she has to improvise, especially when she must be at a nighttime exhibit opening.

Diehl said. “Sometimes I am able to scramble. I ask a friend if Quinlan can have a sleepover, or my husband has to stay home and not come to an event at the gallery.”

Diehl recently had to bring Quinlan to work because his child care between school and swimming lessons fell through.

She had him at the gallery after school, then brought him to his lesson and returned to work.

“Then I had to go back out to pick him up,” she said. “This doesn’t really work for my business.”

Melissa Turley is another working mother who depends on reliable child care.

“Great child care is critical so I can work,” said the executive director of the Teton Village Association whose son, George, is 6. “It takes a combination of summer and after-school camp, a wonderful partner, family and friends and baby-sitters.”

Up until July, Turley was chairwoman of the Board of Teton County Commissioners.

“I have definitely brought my child into the office and to meetings,” Turley said. “More often it was because I couldn’t find a sitter or because a special meeting was scheduled at the last minute than because a sitter canceled,” she said.

Turley said George attended his first Town Council meeting with her when he was about 6 months old.

When he grew older, she said, he loved sitting under the county commissioners’ desk to read or play during a meeting.

Amy Dahmen moved to Jackson a year ago after graduating from college. She baby-sits “a ton,” she said, in addition to teaching at Little Lambs Preschool at the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole.

She said the bulk of her baby-sitting gigs happen over the weekend.

There are all sorts of reasons parents need a sitter. Sometimes she takes care of kids when their dad goes out of town and their mom has a conference or a work retreat. Sometimes parents have a date night, or friends are visiting from out of town.

Dahmen is also one of the sitters for Jackson Hole Nannies and Playtime in the Tetons. It’s through those services that she gets the majority of her last-minute child care requests.

“It’s not a bad gig,” Dahmen said of baby-sitting. “It’s not rocket science — it’s pretty easy and fun.”

Whether parents have to shell out $10 to $15 an hour for a teenager they find by word of mouth or pay $20 on up to a sitting service, it doesn’t take an expert to point out that every once in a while they needs to take a break from their progeny.

Relieving stress in a high-priced town Plentiful yoga and massage options encourage affordability.

ven in the most scenic and relaxed of places, stress rears its head.

Jackson Hole is one of the easier places to deal with it, with myriad options to eat healthfully and burn off steam from a long day of work or taking care of children.

The lifestyle here is just different than the concrete jungles that more than 80 percent of Americans call home. Of course, even living in a postcard comes with a price.

Dealing with stress in a high-priced place like Jackson Hole is much easier if you can afford to do so. Dozens of businesses around Jackson Hole flourish because of the demand to relieve tension and maintain healthy lifestyles. The town is filled with experts on calming practices such as meditation, massage or yoga.

Fortunately, the intense competition among business owners means that every massage center and yoga studio not affiliated with a world-class resort stays reasonably priced.

One affordable option for stress relief is yoga.

It’s one of the most popular ways in the valley to relieve stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“Stress is going to exist in our lives,” said Teton Yoga Shala’s Adi Amar. “And what people start to learn through different yoga practices is how to really take the clarity, calmness and ease that we establish on the mat and how to integrate it into our lives.”

An outsider might view yoga as simply a way to become flexible and prevent injuries. But its healing powers are as much mental as they are physical.

“Yoga works on the breath, which directly impacts the nervous system,” Amar said. “It trains the nervous system to be in more of a parasympathetic response.”

Amar said the breathing exercises and meditation train the mind to be more calm, more grounded, more settled and at ease.

“It’s so much broader than just physical poses,” Amar said.

Yoga can be a good tool for staying calm in an expensive resort town. You get bonus points for hiking up a mountain first. And if you’re really into it you can get a massage afterward.

The parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes called the rest and digest system, conserves energy as it slows the heart rate and relaxes sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

And yoga is hardly the only practice that focuses on this part of the nervous system. Massage works similarly, allowing the body to completely relax or “give up,” as Bear and Doe Massage Works therapist Glad Hancock said.

“When that surrender happens, the whole parasympathetic nervous system relaxes,” she said.

Hancock tells her clients to be “in the now,” to forget about the past and the future and to relax during their massage.

Hancock said many people, especially in Jackson Hole, are constantly striving to achieve. That lifestyle tends to put the brain on high alert, which in turns contracts the muscles and induces stress.

“The body is actually an incredible healing machine,” Hancock said. “It’s designed to keep us healing all the time. And it can’t do that when it’s in that contractive mode. And that contraction comes from our thought.”

T

he mother-daughter dental-care duo who are trying their darnedest to improve Jackson Hole residents’ choppers easily could have never happened.

Brittney Espinoza is a new dentist at ElkRidge Dental, and Nina Hahn, her mother, can be found working alongside her as a dental hygienist. But Espinoza wasn’t always so inclined to follow in her mama’s footsteps.

“She didn’t want to do anything I did,” Hahn said.

Espinoza, who completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Wyoming, planned in college to get into medicine but was interested in obstetrics and gynecology. The decision to head to dental school surprised her mother.

“I learned she wanted to be a dentist when she applied to 14 dental schools,” Hahn said. “She didn’t tell me too much about it.”

The mother and daughter were professionally united in April, when Hahn jumped offices across Jackson to ElkRidge. Espinoza took a job at the office in March, which gave her an opportunity to raise her two children in the town she grew up in. Previously she worked at a dental office in Austin, Texas.

At ElkRidge Dental, Espinoza and Hahn work side by side and complement each other well.

“I’ve worked with other hygienists, and this is definitely the best situation,” Espinoza said. “We just work well, and we flow better together.”

Though Hahn has the edge in professional tenure, Espinoza’s job title means she’s technically the boss.

But “really, she’s the boss of me,” Espinoza said. “She will always be my mother, even in the workplace.”

Hahn wasn’t having the boss allegation: “I am not, Brittney, you are.”

a sign on the wall that says Hahn birthed Espinoza. Their relationship usually comes out in conversation, but when it doesn’t it can lead to some looks.

“Sometimes it’s weird if we haven’t brought it up,” Espinoza said. “I’ll be talking to her and I’ll say, ‘Mom,’ and they will think it’s a little odd.”

One perk of the mother-daughter duo for ElkRidge Dental has been the publicity — and perhaps the curiosity. ElkRidge has run ads pro-

moting the “newest mother-daughter team,” and an $85 exam. It has been a boon for business, Hahn said.

“The idea of the promotion is to build clientele and to have a good-priced cleaning and examination to get people started,” she said. “It’s working well.”

Weston said organizations like the Wilson Homemakers — there also were clubs in Jackson, Moran and Kelly — were organized by the University of Wyoming to teach women in places far from Laramie the latest in homemaking skills, including sewing, child rearing and cooking. In addition the clubs would bake and can and quilt and knit and sell their wares to benefit organizations and families in need.

After 50-some years of such clubs, however, they disbanded.

“Members aged out,” Weston said, “and it became difficult to get new members. Young mothers had to work as well as be homemakers, thus did not have time or did not desire to take time away from their family.”

Laurel Wicks always loved these domestic arts. In fact she was president of the Wilson Homemakers for

a couple of years and was named Homemaker of the Year once. In home economics class she was always way ahead of her schoolmates, making whole outfits while they were learning to sew on a button.

Nowadays, home economics aren’t taught in the public schools, said Wicks, who called it “appalling.” But she understands. For the generation that lived through the Great Depression or World War II, like her own late mother, it was a big deal to have a little extra money to spend on a prepared meal or store-bought clothes.

“My mom was made to darn holes in socks,” she said. At some point or other, however, socks became cheap and money became plentiful enough that she said, “I’m never going to darn another sock,” Wicks recalled.

It was dawn of the era of conspicuous consumption, and folks like Wicks’ mom rejoiced in not having to do such laborintensive tasks.

Educator Krinkee this is also her first year in Jackson. She brings with her a Bachelor of Science degree in equine science with a minor in business administration from Colorado State University.

Krinkee’s job is all 4-H, all the time.

“Four-H started out being agricultural-based,” she said, “but it’s really branched out since then.”

In Teton County the program involves roughly 300 kids and adults.

The activity clubs most often associated with 4-H involve raising animals and selling them at the county fair, but there’s a lot more going on, Krinkee said.

There are shooting clubs, a clogging club, quilting, baking and other clubs — even a guitar club.

That’s a good thing, because many kids live in areas without enough land to raise livestock. Restrictions also ban livestock in areas like Rafter J. “That is a huge issue, especially in this county,” Krinkee said.

The other perennial challenge is retaining 4-H’ers after their first year.

“Our county does a little better than other counties,” she said.

That’s in part due to a scholarship program that high school-age 4-H’ers qualify for.

They’re coming back, though, as a matter of necessity.

“Girls need to know how to use tools and change a tire,” she said. “It’s important to be independent and selfsufficient.”

The Bozeman, Montana, native comes by 4-H honestly: She owns a horse she keeps in Idaho and recently sold her rodeo horse.

“I used to rodeo, but I put that on hold,” she said.

Now Krinkee and her dog can be found on the trails when she’s not working.

Eventually she hopes to start an after-school program involving the 4-H model, but that’s in the future. For now it’s about keeping 4-H running.

“Statewide, 4-H touches the lives of more than 10,000 youth and adults each year,” the extension’s website states.

As do the extension’s other programs and services statewide. Between educators, specialists and other extension employees “from all of Wyoming’s 23 counties, we contribute to more than 1.5 million educational contacts each year with Wyoming citizens,” the website states.
