Although Jackson Hole is known internationally

Summer Living

as an eminent ski town, many locals will tell you: they stayed for the summers. As the hefty snowpack melts away from the peaks to the creeks, wildlife and Jacksonites alike revel in the seemingly endless sunny days. In the summer, Jackson’s public parks and green spaces come to life with outdoor markets, art festivals and live music. The valley’s denizens emerge from their houses for backyard potlucks and lawn games. But,

Local tips on warm weather fun in Jackson Hole

what really sets Jackson apart from any other western town, is its singular access to a myriad of outdoor activities. Whether you are a veteran alpinist, an amateur angler or a bike path pedaler, the valley has something for you. This year, we asked the JHREA team for input on their favorite summer activities. No two answers came back the same.

Via Ferrata at Teton Village JHREA owner and associate broker Karen Terra has never been one to shy away from adventure. In addition to founding businesses on multiple continents, Karen has paraglided, skydived and bungee jumped. Each year, on her birthday, she challenges herself to step out of her comfort zone with a new adventure. In 2020, she chose to climb Via Ferrata with the guides at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Via Ferrata is a form of rock climbing developed by Italian soldiers during WWI in order to safely traverse alpine passes. In order to create a safe route for amateur alpinists, iron steps and safety cables are pre-installed in high-altitude cliff faces. Jackson Hole has a spectacularly scenic trio of Via Ferrata routes — Ranger Ridge, Gateway and Casper Buttress.

A lazy float down a wild and scenic river Reynolds Pomeroy may be a hard-working associate broker at JHREA, but he moonlights as a river guide. When he’s not in a suit and tie, he dons board shorts and grabs a pair of oars as a boatman for local outfitter Barker-Ewing. You can catch him on the breathtaking stretch of the Snake River that winds through the southernmost reaches of Grand Teton National Park. According to Reynolds, floating this stretch of river is a “a timeless and quintessential summer-time activity” that can not be missed. Meghan Lori spends her summer days on the water as well. But, for her, the journey is more important than the destination. Whether she is on Flat Creek, the Teton River or Fish Creek, Meghan always brings along a sloshie (if you don’t know what this is, head to the Bodega in Teton Village to try one) and her dog, Tonks.

Hiking off the beaten path The striking features of Grand Teton National Park draw crowds of visitors every year, but there are many areas surrounding Jackson Hole that are explored by only the most intrepid wanderers. To the east, the jagged limestone Gros Ventre Mountains are rich with flora and fauna. Just beyond them, the Wind River Range offers miles of rugged wilderness. For associate broker Garth Gillespie, the Winds provide the perfect place to unwind on a day out with his dog, Maggie.

Mountain biking In the early 2000s, a rogue trail crew began building the first purpose-built mountain biking trails that had ever been constructed on US Forest Service land. There was tension, at first, between the trail builders, hikers and the forest service. But, the project eventually gained enough local reverence that it was officially sanctioned by Bridger Teton National Forest. By the 2010s Teton Pass had been transformed into an all-mountain biker’s paradise. Trail builders at nearby resorts took notice. Today, there are bike trails crisscrossing the slopes of Snow King Mountain Resort, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort. Grand Targhee in particular has made a name for itself as one of the most coveted locales for downhill and cross country biking in the western US, where associate brokers Kelsey Cole and Katie Brady spend many summer days getting in their adventure fix. “The adrenaline, cardio, ease of access and all the beautiful places it takes you are only a few reasons I love it,” she said.

Swimming in alpine lakes Thousands of years ago, massive glaciers receded from Jackson Hole into the high alpine. In their wake, they left depressions in the drainages and foothills of the Tetons. These depressions formed deep lakes, rich with cutthroat trout and mountain whitefish. Today, the lakes of the Tetons remain briskly cold throughout the summer, but seldom will you find such clean and clear water. Locals and tourists alike brave the cold water each summer. For associate broker Christy Gillespie, dipping in alpine lakes has become a time-honored tradition.

10

Trail Running The Tetons are a runner’s paradise. Gentle, winding paths on the valley floor provide a beautiful venue for athletes to chase an endorphin rush, sometimes known as a “runner’s high.” For some, though, a jog around Phelp’s Lake isn’t enough. This special breed of runners is driven to strive for longer, harder, faster objectives in a never ending pursuit of their own physical limitations. Sales agent Shawn Asbell is one of these runners. In 2019, he completed the 52 mile Bighorn Trail Run as well as the Snow King Hill Climb, which covers over 1,500 vertical feet in just a couple of miles.

Alpine Rock Climbing In 1898, the Reverend Franklin Spaulding and Wyoming state auditor Billy Owen made the (contested) first ascent of the Grand Teton via a circuitous route that still bears their names. During the 120 years since, the Tetons has remained one of the most important mountain ranges in American Mountaineering. First ascents of daring alpine climbing routes still happen on a regular basis, and prodigies from the valley’s small community of dedicated climbers have gone on to accomplish mountaineering feats around the world. For associate broker Mark Icuss, climbing is a way of life during the summer. Among other routes, he has climbed both the North Ridge and the Exum Ridge of the Grand Teton. According to Mark, “summer in Jackson hole means a lot of things but mainly climbing and exploring the Tetons!”

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

The Community Foundation of Jackson Hole Millard Fuller, the co-founder of Habitat for Humanity International, famously said, “For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people’s love and concern for each other.”

25

Jackson Hole ranked first in gifts per capita across the nation. At no time has this been more apparent than during the past year. As the pandemic wreaked havoc on the service industry, the school system and overall public health, Teton County saw an unprecedented response from its philanthropic community.

One community’s response to a global crisis In mid March of 2020, Teton County began preparing for the imminent arrival of COVID-19. First concerts and performances were cancelled, then school was delayed, then bars and restaurants were shuttered, and, finally, the ski resorts. Many residents lost their jobs.

Here in Teton County, this concept is alive and well. Since its inception in 1989, the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole has given over $300 million in grants. The bulk of those funds have been allocated within the community to nonprofit organizations that focus on health and human services, animal welfare, conservation, sustainability, education, outdoor recreation and everything in between.

At this point, the community foundation is inexorably woven into the fabric of the nonprofit sector that it has helped create. Many of its staff have worked for other nonprofits in Jackson, and just about everyone in the valley has benefited from the foundation’s giving programs directly or indirectly. “It is our breadth of community knowledge that makes our good work possible,” wrote former president Katherine Conover in an opening letter to the foundation’s 2019 report. The magnitude of Teton County’s philanthropy is, to some extent, a result of the presence of wealth in the valley (the per-capita income is over $200 thousand in Teton County). But, even when compared with Marin County or Silicon Valley, Jackson Hole’s residents end up giving more back. In Candid’s 2019 Community Foundation Insights’ Columbus Survey, the Community Foundation of

Meanwhile, the valley’s nonprofit community scrambled to meet the increasing needs of the community. “Our numbers have doubled from 15 to 20 a day to 30 to 40 a day,” said operations director of the Jackson Hole Cupboard Rachel Deluge back in March, when the organization was struggling to find enough staple foods to cover the rapidly growing demand. “We’re ordering as many cases as we can.” In the months leading up to the pandemic, the Community Foundation had undergone major staffing changes. Laurie Andrews (formerly of Jackson Hole Land Trust) took over the presidency from Katharine Conover, who had filled the position since 2006. The foundation also hired a new director of marketing and communications, Anne Bradley, and shuffled employees between other major posts.

Andrews and Bradley hardly had time to personalize their desks before the pandemic hit. “We both really had to kick into high gear pretty quickly,” Bradley told JHREA. On March 13, the foundation announced the creation of a COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund. The organization committed an initial $150,000, which was immediately matched by donors. Through “community conversations,” regular meetings that the foundation facilitates between nonprofit leaders in different fields, Andrews and her team began to identify the most pressing concerns that the valley faced. Much of the initial funding went to One22, an organization that helps locals overcome housing and food insecurity in the face of poverty and unforeseen hardship.

the spirit of generosity during what can only be described as an all-out charity festival. Winners of the 5k and 10k runs choose a charity to donate their prize money to, nonprofit staff members dress up in outrageous costumes and booths that mix education with fairground fun line town square all day. “It’s a celebration of the community’s generosity,” Bradley said. “It’s an embodiment of philanthropy across all nonprofits and all community members — from folks that give $5 to their favorite charity to the co-challengers that give thousands.” Of course, 2020’s race looked quite different due to the pandemic. On the day of Old Bill’s, the Town square remained devoid of colorful booths and the only runners in the street were joggers — mostly solo.

“The Emergency Response Fund provided a safety net within the community, where there were a lot of gaps,” Bradley said. At the time, federal and state aid had yet to catch up with the effects of the crisis. The first federal stimulus checks didn’t arrive for another month.

“We turned that grant around in nearly 24 hours,” said Bradley. To date, the Emergency Response Fund has amassed more than $5 million from more than 400 donors. More than $3 million of that has already been put back into the community.

A distanced celebration In the Tetons, charitable giving happens year round. But, there’s one day every year that outpace’s all others in philanthropic magnitude and community spirit. Since 1997, Old Bill’s Fun Run has mobilized local donors to celebrate

But, the Community Foundation didn’t give up that easily. In the spirit of Old Bill’s it hosted a virtual event that was an unmitigated success. In the week leading up to “run day,” nonprofits celebrated in their own ways. Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding took to town square with horse costumes and “honk if you love riding” signs. Jackson Hole Historical Society hiked the Teton Pass History trail in Wilson. Friends of Pathways paraded down the bike path on a fleet of humanpowered vehicles.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

As the pandemic persisted, the Community Foundation continued to identify and ameliorate community-level problems. When local businesses ran low on PPE, the foundation placed a bulk order of masks and thermometers. When the school district realized that classes would need to be taught remotely, the foundation provided funding to install wifi hotspots in areas where families didn’t have access to the internet.

Instead of a footrace, the foundation sent a gaggle of rubber duckies, each with a number corresponding to a nonprofit, in a race down flat creek. Prize money winners included Teton Free Clinic, Transcendental Meditation of Jackson Hole and Teton Artlab. In the end, 2020’s Old Bill’s was the silver lining during a difficult summer. The event raised a record-breaking $15.3 million from 4,349 donors.

Making a generational difference

JHREA.com

While much of the philanthropy that the community foundation facilitates gets filtered through Jackson Hole’s singular network of over 200 nonprofit organizations, some of the funding is also allocated directly to those that need it. In a collaboration with the Teton County School District and the Fund for Public Education, the foundation raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for college-bound high school students every year. We believe in the power of support at the right time,” Andrews wrote in last year’s Teton County Scholarship Program announcement. “What an unusual time to be a senior. We wish we could celebrate you in person and yet we do applaud all you have achieved and all that lies ahead.” One aspect of the program in particular was in the spotlight last year. “The Spirit of Old Bill’s” award was given to Julie Giacobassi and Zach Hall for spearheading the First In Family Jackson Hole Scholarship. The program pays for tuition and provides mentorship to Teton County students who come from families with no history of higher education.

28 28

“When this program started we imagined giving the students money for college and a lot of good wishes,” Giacobassi said. “We never imagined, in a million years, how involved we would get.” Since 2017, the program has aided 17 local students in their pursuit of a college degree. I honestly don’t think I would be in college if it wasn’t for them. They make it a priority to check in on everybody,” scholarship recipient Alison Morales said. The future of the nonprofit sector is uncertain during these trying times. Although 2020 was a record-breaking year for philanthropy, the economic downturn caused by the pandemic has put many organizations in jeopardy. Candid estimated in a 2020 report that 11 percent of nonprofits could be shuttered by the fallout of the COVID-19 crisis. Luckily, organizations like the community foundation provide an important buffer against unforeseen hardship for both nonprofits and individuals. In Jackson Hole, everybody can be assured that someone has their back.

Backcountry Volunteers Outdoor recreation is a time-honored Wyoming tradition, JHREA.com

and there are as many different flavors of it as there are different kinds of people in the west. In Jackson Hole, alpine skiing and mountaineering dominate the scene, while just over Togwotee pass, Dubois residents are avid hunters and horse packers. But, no matter what your chosen passion is, all outdoor sports share common values. They are activities that connect us with the natural world, deepen our relationships with friends and family and strengthen our confidence in our own self-reliance. While people often think of outdoor sports as highly individualistic, the truth is that most people rely on their community to stay safe while adventuring. Every great outdoor destination is supported by a network of organizations that help mitigate risks and keep people alive when they get in over their heads. In Star Valley, two organizations in particular provide backup in the backcountry. Top of the Rockies works to educate travelers on safety practices, while Star Valley Search and Rescue (SVSAR) aids adventurers when things go wrong.

48

SVSAR commander Cory Hepworth’s reasons for volunteering his time to the program are simple. “I do it for the love of my fellow community members,” he said. “I hope that, when I’m in need, there’s someone with the same desire and love for the work that will come and help me.” As per a Wyoming state statute, every county in the state has a search and rescue unit, which is administered but the sheriff’s office. But, although SVSAR receives state funding, all of its members are volunteers. Over the course of Hepworth’s rescue career, he has seen the program grow from 20 or so rescuers to nearly 50. Between organizational meetings, training and missions, those volunteers put in 5,000-7,000 hours of work each year. Any money that the program receives goes straight back into training costs, rescue vehicle maintenance and first aid equipment. “Hunting licenses, fishing licenses, ORV tags and snowmachine tags: all of that goes towards funding search and rescue,” Hepworth said. “Go ahead and donate through that process.”

Like Hepworth, club president Justin Fritz is also a volunteer. “I find that this community gives like no other,” Fritz said. “We’ve come a long way from just being a snowmobile club.” Every spring, Fritz and a fleet of other valley residents mount dirt bikes, side-by-sides and ATVs and wind down muddy forest service roads to retrieve the emergency shelters until the following year. Then, the weekend before Mother’s day, they saddle up again to pick up trash from along Greys River.

“I love the peace and solitude of just being out there with a handful of people,” he said. “Sometimes you don’t see a soul all day.” During the past year, headlines from local newspapers to the New York Times have described a rapid increase in backcountry users due to the pandemic. “In the throes of a pandemic that has made the indoors inherently dangerous, tens of thousands more Americans than usual have flocked outdoors,” Ali Watkins wrote in her recent Times article. But, both Hepworth and Fritz agree that the boom in backcountry travel started long before COVID-19 came to America. “Our missions have been on a steady increase since 2014,” Hepworth explained.

Star Valley, Wyoming

While SVSAR helps people after they have had an accident, the community volunteers at Top of the Rockies aim to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Each fall, the club installs temporary emergency shelters in highlytrafficked backcountry snowmobiling terrain. They also run free winter clinics that teach backcountry users how to use avalanche beacons, shovels and probes.

For Fritz, backcountry travel has provided him with tranquility in solitude. His volunteer work is focused on creating a place for others to experience those same things.

As backcountry travel becomes more popular, the burden on small community-driven organizations like Top of the Rockies and SVSAR may increase. The team at SVSAR will be called into the field more and more each year, and Top of the Rockies’ emergency shelters will see increased traffic every winter. Chances are, no matter where or how you get outside, there is a volunteer organization nearby making you a little safer.

Teton Valley Food Pantry It’s Wednesday, and the volunteers arrive at two in the afternoon. There is little time for chit chat, because Sue Heffron, the administrator at the Teton Valley Food Pantry, immediately begins assigning tasks. There are bison burgers to unload from the Idaho Food Bank (exciting!), eggs from Broulims that need to be counted and organized and a big order of salad greens from U.S. Foods that has to be put into coolers. “You’re just like my mom. You always find something for me to do,” one of the volunteers tells Heffron.

58

Other community members contribute to the food pantry through donations. While traditional fooddrive style giving is welcome, Heffron explained that monetary donations can have an even greater impact.

Teton County residents have used the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) at the second lowest rate in Idaho during 2021 (2.17%). But this doesn’t mean that the valley is free from food insecurity. In fact, the Teton Valley Food Pantry supplied groceries to 3,889 households in 2020, a far broader reach than SNAP. The pantry is able to aid residents that are experiencing hunger and don’t qualify for state assistance due to their income, citizenship status or ability to go through a complex application process. “We only ask our clients five questions,” Heffron said. “Their name, their telephone number, their household size, what town they live in and their income.”

During the early days of the pandemic, the demand for food assistance in the valley increased sharply. Almost three times as many households took advantage of the program in 2020 as did the previous year. Luckily, the pantry was up to the task. Heffron took over as the sole paid employee and chief administrator in March of 2020. Two months after taking over the post, she had increased the frequency of distribution days from twice a month to three times a week and expanded the program to more residents than ever. The work was made possible by a dedicated cohort of volunteers. “We now have over 100 volunteers that give around 200 hours of their time every month,” Heffron said.

The food bank does receive state funding, but it is not always enough to meet local demand. Fortunately, philanthropy has kept pace with the increased need for food assistance in the valley. “Our community has donated an incredible amount of money during the pandemic,” Heffron said. “During the last year we have always had enough resources to buy food.” While the term food pantry may conjure up images of random near-expired canned goods, the shelves in Teton Valley are stocked with fresh food. Heffron buys produce and staples from local grocery stores and orders in bulk from both U.S. Foods and the Idaho Food Bank. On distribution day, clients are greeted by volunteers with a checklist that lists in-stock items. Just like at the grocery store, they choose what they will take home. “For some people, it is hard to admit that they can’t afford to feed their family,” Heffron said. “We give them dignity by allowing them to still choose what they want to eat.” The community resource center also runs a food rescue program that collects almost expired food from local grocery stores, takes on donations of unwanted game meat and partners with local farms to distribute excess produce. The rescued food is available at distribution day on a firstcome-first-serve basis to supplement the pantry’s supply.

Idaho & Regional

The food pantry’s clients are as diverse as the valley they live in. They include seasonal forest service employees, ski bums, service industry workers, immigrants and the elderly. Coincidentally, the mean per capita income for Teton County is just below the maximum cutoff to receive supplemental food from the pantry.

“Those dollars end up going towards fresh produce and staples like rice, beans, milk butter and cheese,” she said.

Teton Valley is a special place. No matter who you are and where you come from, the community is there to help you through hard times. “We have volunteers here that are anywhere from 10 years old to 78,” Heffron said. “We’re just so proud of how people in this valley take care of each other.”

There is inspiration in the rugged beauty that abounds within the iconic Teton Valley. These cabins serve as a launching point to experience the world-renowned recreation that awaits just beyond the doorstep. Home to some

68

And whatever one’s desires, it can be found here year-round. In the spring, summer and fall, Tributary offers a two-mile elevated boardwalk through a 500-acre private wetland for wildlife viewing; an 18-hole golf course designed by David McLay Kidd; seven fishing ponds; an archery and tomahawk throwing center; and nearly endless trails for hiking. In the winter, owners can enjoy miles of crosscountry skiing; a kid-friendly snowmobile track; ice-skating rink; and a members-only ski lounge at the famed Grand Targhee Resort. Tributary’s farm-to-table restaurant and bar; spa and wellness center and pool and hot tubs offer a fitting reprieve after a day in the outdoors throughout the seasons. Just miles away, the quiet town of Driggs, Idaho offers conveniences of its own—celebrated restaurants and nightlife, shopping, spas and yoga studios, and a rustic downtown that encapsulates the mountain culture. Just beyond the mountains lie the gateways to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, home to some of the world’s largest wildlife populations and ecological wonders. With two commercial airports less than an hour away offering service to many of the country’s major hubs, getting here has never been easier. For those flying themselves to the area, Driggs Reed Memorial Airport is located minutes from the community. And, on the “quiet side” of the Tetons, once arrived, owners can escape into the solitude and privacy that only Teton Valley can afford. They say home is where the next adventure is.
