How do you top that recognition? JHMR respects the Ski Magazine ranking process and we enjoyed being #1 last year. JHMR has always had the reputation of being “only” for advanced skiers. What have you done to accommodate a greater variety of skill-levels? How is the resort family-friendly? With the results we are seeing from our surveys, we know the commitment to the intermediate experience is having an effect. With the entire change of the Casper area, new lifts, new terrain, better grooming and snowmaking the experience is so much better. We now have 3x as much snowmaking capacity in this region and a much new and larger fleet of cats that ensure the terrain is in perfect condition all season long. We are also excited to share news of the new terrain that will open this year in advance of the new Teton Lift, which will open for the 50th Anniversary Winter Season in 2015/2016. In addition to improved air service which always helps for families on vacation, programming at the Kids Ranch is growing each year with our highly regarded teen programs engaging local heros from TGR to our caring, quality focused, infant daycare, there is truly an experience for every child visiting with their family. Increased dining options, better learn to turn programs for youth and the fun play parks at the base all show our commitment to families visiting.
Why should skiers choose JHMR over other mountain ski destinations? If I really have to sum this up in a few words, my first one would be authenticity. Nothing will prepare guests for the breathtaking scenery, the nature and the neighboring National Park jewels of Grand Teton and Yellowstone. With the Southern entrance to Grand Teton National Park less than a mile away, Teton Village has become a summer destination as well, what types of activities can travelers expect from JHMR in the summertime? Summer has always been known for its appeal. As the world’s first national park, Yellowstone draws close to four million visitors in the summer. Teton Village is a wonderful oasis for visitors to relax and enjoy a true resort experience while escaping the hustle and bustle of other areas. At the resort we operate the aerial tram for summer rides, a downhill mountain bike park for higher adrenaline junkies and a very popular aerial adventure course. We conveniently package all our activities into a Grand Adventure Pass and recommend a couple of days to really explore the mountain.
Where do you see JHMR in five years? We are blessed with the foresight of our predecessors in this valley that protected and planned for a sustainable community. The legacy at JHMR is to continue to ensure we plan and deliver a first class product year round, while remaining true to protecting and preserving the experience for all our guests. Next year we will celebrate our 50th anniversary with great style and we hope community and guest engagement. In 2011, John Kasarda published a book, Aerotropolis: The Way We’ll Live Next, describing a new urban form placing airports in the center with cities growing around them. I’ve been to many of these airport cities, and found them soulless, clone-like, thick with franchises and the commerce of expediency. Jackson Hole has an airport, the only one in America in a National Park, but there is nothing Xeroxed about it. The largest elk migration in the world is just outside the door. Try to find that anywhere else. After traveling to metropolises and micropolises (populations between 10,000 and 50,000) around the world, this place seems different, something evolved to a higher plane, but what? I scratch about and come up with what I think a suitable descriptor: a montropolis….a mountain town that offers up not just the riot of the natural world, and the cosmopolitan rewards of a first-class city, but then goes beyond. The components: 1) a rich art culture 2) luxury and elegance, but of a rustic flavor 3) an abundance of wildlife 4) family friendliness 5) A strong conservation ethos and 6) a range of snow and ice adventures. These six ingredients, mixed generously together, concoct Jackson Hole, perhaps the first montropolis.

After settling in, I decide to test my notion, and head to town to check out the art scene. Jackson Hole has a bewilderingly disproportionate number of artists and galleries: over 50 art galleries in a township of less than 10,000, and you can practically throw a snowball in any direction and hit an artist. That evening the sky glows like a bottle of cognac held up to the light. I decide to explore some of the rustic-style elegance that is requisite in the model of montropolis. When I first came to Jackson I crashed on a guide’s log cabin couch, which was about as luxurious as you might get. But today there is a plethora of luxury hotels, from the Four Seasons Resort in Teton Village to the Wort Hotel downtown to the Amangani, The Rusty Parrot, the Hotel Terra, and of course the soigné Spring Creek Ranch, where I’m staying. I have a cocktail with Steve Price, the general manager, at the Granary, the bar where the peaks outside the glass are skywriting. “These are the first mountains that look like mountains should,” Teddy Roosevelt supposedly said when first gazing at the sonic architecture. Afterwards, I take a stroll through the town square to check out the shopping. High-end offerings such as Rodeo, 22 Home, Belle Cose, Wool and Whiskey, and CocoLove, a world-class chocolatier, now inhabit this town, and give it a Beverly Hills-with-altitude feeling. Oh look…Harrison Ford just came out of that shop. The following day, under columbine skies, I head out to see the wildlife up close and personal. Some beasts are unavoidable…I keep running into traffic jams on the road as folks slow down to gawk at moose chewing branches a few feet from the pavement. But the grand display is the American Serengeti, the 25,000acre National Elk Refuge, where up to 10,000 wintering elk make their grounds.
two horses a quarter mile down a snow-packed track. It’s also one of the biggest tailgate parties of the year, but all for a good cause. It’s sponsored by the Shriners, and the motto is, “The Cutters run so a child may walk.” But I’m here in Jackson Hole to partake, and begin with a cross-country ski run. I hook up with Jack Bellorado, who runs the Teton Pines Cross Country Ski Center, and together we head out to kick and glide some 10 miles of machine-groomed tracks beneath the fountains of the earth that are the Tetons. Another quality of the montropolis is a strong conservation ethos, and Jackson Hole is the birthplace of the modern conservation movement. Here they conserve soil, they conserve water, they conserve wildlife, they conserve open space, they conserve scenery. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. stood beneath the gleaming silver blades of the Tetons in 1924 and was mightily impressed. The Yellowstone Superintendent at the time seized the opportunity to explain the hope of protecting and preserving “this sublime valley” from unsightly commercial development. Rockefeller decided to purchase offending private properties with the intention of donating them to the National Park. It took more time than anticipated. The creation of Grand Teton National Park finally occurred on September 14, 1950, when Harry S. Truman signed the bill. Now, 97% of the land in Teton County is protected. The next couple days are devoted to the final quality needed to be proclaimed a montropolis: great snow motion. My visit happens to coincide with WinterFest, which is bookended on two weekends by Cutter Races and Ski-Joring. The former is a contest in which chariot-like vehicles are pulled by
At one point we pass Olympic athlete Erich Wilbrecht, competitor in the 1992 Winter Games on the Biathlon team. He’s out for a little spin, at 60 miles an hour. “Once you’ve skied here, where else you gonna go?” For my final outing I team up with Mike Halpin, owner of Lost Creek Ranch Lodge & Spa, where the Modern Family cast stayed for one of their vacation episodes. Mike is a sled head, a snow machine buff, and claims that Jackson Hole has the best snowmobiling in the world. He offers to take me on one of his favorite runs, a ten-mile spin to Granite Hot Springs (we are, after all, adjacent to the most geothermally active terrain in the world.) It’s snowing hard when we start out, but soon clears to ice blue skies as we whiz past dogsledders and scenery that chews it is so dramatic. After a couple hours riding through this supernal painting, our noses fill with the sharp perfume of sulfur. We park, and slip into a little rip in the earth’s crust that is the 104-degree hot springs, and soak away whatever residual blues came from beyond the blazing poetry of this place. At this moment it seems life beyond this valley is error. This is the place to be. This is montropolis.

JH Ski & Snowboard Club Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club, Teton County’s oldest non-profit, annually serves over 500 local young athletes. This community based organization focuses on inclusion, building character in participants and developing world class programs and facilities. Last year, during the Club’s 75th Anniversary, they launched the $1.5M “Building Our Base” capital campaign designed to improve snow making and lighting on Snow King Mountain. This project is a key component of the overall $3.6M infrastructure project completed in 2014. With the on hill improvements JHSC, in partnership with Snow King Mountain, will create early season race lanes and a terrain park. This will give local athletes the opportunity to train on their home hill instead of traveling to Colorado and Utah for fall camps. As a result local families will save money and students will miss less school. JHSC will also draw regional, national and international race teams to Jackson for early season camps during the month of November for years to come. Teton Adaptive Sports Teton Adaptive Sports is a locally based nonprofit with the mission of supporting, promoting, and developing sports and recreation for people with disabilities. Founded in 2005 as a chapter of the national organization Disabled Sports/USA, TAS provides equipment, instructor training, and scholarships for the Adaptive Ski Programs at JHMR and Grand Targhee. For the 7th year, TAS will host Wounded Warriors at the Wyoming Adaptive Ski Experience, a unique opportunity that combines 4 days at Grand Targhee, then 4 days at Jackson Hole. Center for the Arts Center for the Arts is a hub for the artistic, cultural and creative activity in Jackson Hole. The Center is home to the community’s 500-seat theater and 19 Resident nonprofit organizations on a centralized campus, encouraging collaboration and inspiration. PAWS of Jackson Hole For the last 15 years, PAWS has provided essential support for our local pet population. NO STAT E I N CO M E TA X With no state tax on personal or corporate income, “you have more disposable income,” Geittmann says. DY N AST Y T R U STS In Wyoming, you can shield your real estate from federal estate taxes for up to 1,000 years through a dynasty trust. “You can establish a trust in Wyoming for the benefit of your family or other beneficiaries,” Geittmann says. “You can transfer your real estate into a limited liability company or family partnership and then put that into the dynasty trust, which can continue for a thousand years.” As a result, multiple generations can make use of and enjoy the property, without having to pay estate taxes or worse, having to sell the property in order to pay the taxes. A key point to remember: The trust must be administered in Wyoming. NO I N HE R I TA N C E TA X Wyoming does not assess any state inheritance tax. NO STAT E GI FT TA X “Somebody who owns property in Wyoming can ‘gift’ that real estate to their heirs without having to worry about paying a state gift tax,” Geittmann says. NO TA X ON OU T- O F - STAT E RE T IRE M EN T INCO ME “A lot of people in Jackson Hole use Wyoming as a second home,” Geittmann says. “They have retirement income that comes from other states where they may be a resident. Wyoming does not tax that retirement income that’s earned outside of Wyoming, and if the participant is a resident of Wyoming when they take that income then the original state cannot tax that income either, which is certainly beneficial.” LOW P R OP E RT Y TA X ES “Wyoming has very low property taxes compared to other states,” Geittmann says. “The taxes that you do pay here are based on the assessed value of the property.” NO E XCI S E TA XE S When you fill up your car with gas or buy a bag of groceries in Wyoming, you will not pay any state tax on your gas or food. NO TA X ON MI N E R A L OW N ER S H IP “A lot of states charge owners a tax on their mineral ownership, but Wyoming does not,” Geittmann says. “If you own minerals, you will not pay a tax on it like you would your home.” NO I N TA N GI B LE TA X ES Wyoming doesn’t make you pay a tax on financial assets like stocks and bonds.
