VOL 193

Welcome twenty-eighteen Well, as I’ve reiterated time and time again, time seems to progress a little quicker than what our busy, task-driven minds are aware of. One moment we’d be neck deep in our pile of proposals, projects and deadlines therein, and the next, soon as our busy schedule allowed us a split second breather, we’d be made aware of where we are as per our awareness of time – and more often than not it’ll be somewhat a ‘little’ oÉ›; little being anywhere from being an hour or an entire week, or in some rare cases and entire decade too late. I guess that’s just how things are in this perpetual progression of the adage that ‘time and tide (of proďƒžt and loss) waits for no man (without any prejudicial connotation on gender and all that). It seems we’re forever more powerless to dictate let alone control what inconceivable development we’re all a privy to are we not? And seeing as that’d be the case without any exception whatsoever, let’s move on shall we? First up, displayed vividly in full high resolution Technicolor we have a momentous ďƒžrst – a high proďƒžle debut of the iconic American legend – the car that perpetuates all that we’ve come to know and attributed to what the Americans are synonymous for – big, brawny and macho muscle car culture. Clad in menacing black and equipped with a ‘less is more’ package made up of premium go-faster components within a masculine bulges (without any inappropriate nuances it has to be said), we’ve got a ďƒžne Ford Mustang made to be not just a Hyper material, but a Hyper cover material, by our friends at Exotic Mods. Check out all the intricate details inside. Accompanying that extraordinarily unique cover feature we also have a special one-oÉ› feature on KL Wangan – the Malaysian take on the Fast & Furious genre only given a cool Malaysian vibe to it all. From the looks of it we at Hypertune like to express a pure and hardy kudos to the visionary outlook by the folks behind KL Wangan. Accompanying these two exceptional features we also have our ‘regular’ takes that deďƒžnes our time honoured concept: an extensively reworked R33, a slew of Hondas that exempliďƒžes what we’ve come to love of this glorious Japanese manufacturers – an EK with a potent performance and handling mods, and a Jazz that doubles as a Mugen showcase. And they’re both yellow, distinctively yellow. Who says yellow is so mellow? One ďƒžnal greeting before I sign oÉ›: happy new year Cheers!

As we march on to a brand new year (what another one?) we always tend to look back at what was for us the highlight over the three hundred and sixty odd days we’re leaving behind. No, not you’re rst child, or your rst bungee jumping experience, not your rst kiss or even your rst err nope I’ll ditch that train of thought for now. Nothing remotely personal here people rather, entirely exclusively on the subject of automobiles, cars, kereta, qìchǟ, mobil, rth or whatever your lingua franca tend to dene them as. Yes ladies and gents it is all about cars right here, regardless of what you call them by. It is a given that at the very least two-thirds of humanity get their jollies oɛ this most wonderful of inventions. Even if they don’t get their jollies at the very least they rely on them don’t they? So then, despite the glaring presumptions, are

we then satised with the above hypothesis? Sure we are. And so on the subject of cars what do you reckon to be the highlight of 2017? Would it be the debut of the latest ‘Malaysia’s best-selling car’ the ineɛable MYVI? Or could it be the outright purchase of Proton by Geely? Or, or could it be the much vaunted arrival of that ‘wheeled Samurai’ – the one the only FK8R? Let us ponder each of them for a bit shall we? Now on the subject of the new MYVI, it goes without saying that it was the most highly anticipated launch collectively shared by a sizeable chunk of the Malaysian motoring public. And from the looks of it, the brand new MYVI (looking even more fabulous in the esh) delivers all that we’ve come to expect from a solid best seller, and even add some much appreciated extras and all.

On Geely’s acquisition of Proton, it was a genuine big deal, what more with the manner in which the China’s automotive giant success with its other ventures. Still, we are left with a wee bit reservations and a whisker of apprehension as we awaits the rst product of this amalgamation. Fingers crossed. As ever, the nal candidate has quite a bit of added excitement to it does it not? And the all-new Honda Civic Type R not only redenes excitement in all its pulse-quickening hype, it reshapes the very notion of the word – with that be-winged bio-organic Manga-esque looks, a profusion of cutting-edge speed enhancing tech, and that mythical red Type R badge that invoke fear and awe and respect all in one incomprehensible exclamation. So what’ll it be?

“So what’s your New Year’s resolution?” is undebatable as the second most annoying phrase in regards to an approaching new year, much like 2018 is right now. “What’s the most annoying one then?” I hear you asking. It’s that vexing and lame “I’ll see you next year” joke that never fails to make my blood boil. Sure, it was funny in kindergarten and that’s also where you should have left it. Being funny has now elevated itself to a whole new level of sophistication and you should get on that gravy train before it’s too late. It always does make me wonder though the appropriate response to that question. This year it’s going to be 3840 x 2160 pixels because HD televisions have become so aɛordable and rumours have it that the new PlayStation 5 will be coming out soon as well. Before this, foolish me actually tried to come up with a list that was populated by the usual regrets such as hitting the gym more, eating healthier, not spending every last cent on your project car and that cardinal lie

of “I’ll nish my project car this year.”

times than I’d like to admit.

Those false prophecies have long been demoted to the safe realm of my dreams, of which I have sweet ones every night because I own a project car that should have been done completed two a year ago.

But you got to do what you got to do and if sacricing some little luxuries to make sure your baby is running ne is what it takes, then by golly we will all switch to the racecar-approved diet of roti canai and ais kosong.

Again, I’ve now come to accept that “One does not own a project car, instead project car owns you.”

At the end of the day, it’s all about what makes you happy and if your project car does that, please keep going at it albeit in a logical manner. Let’s not actually try to survive on the bare minimum all in the name of having a car that runs every once in a while though.

So given that the state of my car is now somewhat close to what I had intended, the decision was made to stop modifying it and just continue to maintain it to keep it at where it is now. That worked swell for a while before age begun taking its toll on my pride and joy. Right now maintenance alone is probably going to keep holding a regular adult-esque life out of reach. A fullengine rebuild should be on the cards and the awed logic of, “Hey, since the engine’s out and stripped why not throw in some forged internals and aim for a little more power?” has denitely reared its ugly head more

It’s alright to if you feel like you need to put it on the backburner for a while as you try to adult a bit more. That’s what adulting is and next year feels like it might be more of adulting than an all-out project car dash for the line. Still, like all resolutions it could just be a bunch of hot air and then I end up broke with a barely-running car that will still put a smile on my face.

Cover Car | Ford Mustang GT350R Exotic Mods

The American Icon with a classy local touch courtesy of Exotic Mods Text: Faz

Photos: Kenny Yeoh & Dennis Lhy

Model: Janice Wie

Behold ladies and gents a genuine performance icon resplendent from the outside in, and from the inside out with all the soulful panache and sportiness Exotic Mods have made its own. The substance within the substance so to speak. Then again when you combine two big names in their respective domains, you tend to expect something utterly diɛerent altogether, something

distinctive and unique, or to put it in a manner that everyone can accept, simply special. Of course the term ‘special’ is widely applicable, inasmuch being applied to just about every precepts of familiarity in this thing we aɛectionately called life. Alas, to coin a phrase from out of thin air, this cover feature right here

Take it all in you guys, a Mustang decked in high gloss black is as rare as they come

is indeed superlatively special, something of a ‘collector’s edition’, for a number of reasons. For one thing this is the rst time we have a marvelously modied Mustang gracing our coveted façade; then you factor in the illustrious back story of the car itself, with literally thousands of books and websites dedicated to the Mustang.

Now seeing as our sole focus in this exceptionally rare cover feature is on the Mustang with the seemingly endless tales and stories and anecdotes revolving around the Mustang, it’d be all the more copacetic to keep our narrative exclusively on the Mustang. Spanning more than 50 years, six generations with major reworkings and upgrades as per its styling and performance, the Mustang owe its famous name to the P-51 Mustang ghter plane that ruled the skies during World War 2, the idea oɛered by the Executive Stylist of Ford Motor Company himself John Najjar a big P-51 fan. It goes without saying, that the multitude of stories and anecdotes on the Mustang requires a wee bit more space than what our highly sought after cover feature thus provide. Of course we also have that ‘other’ element – Exotic Mods. In case you’ve been ‘dazed and confused’ or maybe you’re an amnesiac albeit an amnesiac with a penchant for modded cars, Exotic Mods is, as dened in their Facebook page ‘an innovative Malaysian company specializing in the retail, distribution and production of aftermarket accessories and parts catered for all walks of German and Exotic car enthusiasts’. For us Hypertuners though, we go way back like waaaay back! Okay with the customary intro sorted lets go over the specics, as in the Mustang GT350R, a name that invoked all manner of fear and intimidation for its adversaries and contemporaries for the better part of half a century. The 350 designation originated not from its output or its capacity or what have you, rather, according to a reliable source it’s been said that the 350 came from a discussion at Shelby American while trying to come up with a name for the Cobra-Mustang. Carroll Shelby is said to have asked how many feet it was from the oɜce to the workshop buildings. Phil Remington told him it was 350 feet. So it was called a GT 350.

Now that Carroll Shelby dude needs no introduction, just as well seeing as should we give each of these Mustang, Shelby and our very own Exotic Mods tri-factor their dues, we’d be shortchanging each of them in every sense of the narrative. Still we have to give credit where credit is due, should we not? Well like the Americans like to say “Pretty darn well we should”. The Mustang GT350R is a more rened, hardcore and limited production version of the GT350 introduced at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. The gures weren’t all that diɛerent over the R-less GT350 – 526hp & 426 lb-ft 5.2 liter V8, but with carbon ber thrown in the mix along with numerous dietary reevaluation the GT350R is 130 pounds lighter – that’s a K-Pop dude’s worth of lightness right there. Exotic Mods digested all the pluses and minuses prior to the commencement of this stellar Mustang GT350R project and set about accommodating the ultra deep pocketed owner’s preferences, ensuring that every aesthetical nuances and variations are authentic, and unutterably gorgeous. The restyling approach encompasses the lovely sixth generation Mustang exterior

in its entirety, with the full aerodynamic compliments of the top shelf Shelby GT350R. Everything from the front to the back, the left to the right, the top to bottom they’re all Shelby style. To add a classy nishing touch, Exotic Mods placed a number of the famous ‘hissing’ Shelby emblem – the Cobra in its ‘ready to strike’ stance. That emblem permeates every facets of this Exotic Mods Mustang GT350R including the custom-made 20 inch Project6GR wheels nished in Satin Graphite. The 7-spoke design, 10 inch wide up front 11 at the back, mimics the original to perfection. Taking things up a notch in the renowned Exotic Mods manner, there’s also a remote control Diode Dynamics lights conversion kit. Remote. Control. Lights. Man. And here I am going gaga feeling like I’m THE man having my own RC Impreza, with all the visual licensed & authorized graphics and all that; only to nd they have remote control for the freakin lights?! Damn! In hindsight, what with this particular cover feature being a lean and mean American legend that notion entails some oɛ the cuɛ cussing know what I mean? Some F this and F that albeit in a good natured friendly American style.

Well any F-in way, with the long list of aesthetical mods and all, and considering the mighty 500plus hp 5.2 liter V8 planted rmly in its expansive engine bay, this Exotic Mods’ Mustang GT350R had just the one performance upgrade – the Borla Atak Cat Back System which is quite a centerpiece in on itself. Think of it as a ‘miniaturized’ centerpiece within the main centerpiece. You could not take your eyes away could you? Even with the lovely Janice strutting about in her sumptuous ensemble.

Model Review

Born and bred in Kelantan, Janice Wie is a familiar face in this mag, having strutted her incredibly ne god-given assets alongside more than one fantabulous rides (with said fantabulous rides struggling to outshine Janice’s sumptuous curves it has to be said). To think that Janice only does this on a freelance basis! Now Janice happened to start oɛ her modeling career to earn some extra cash but within a short period of being around the local modeling scene, she fell in love with the modeling profession and they reciprocate at a canter, being smitten well nigh instantaneously by Janice’s charm, sweetness and extraordinary beauty. Janice is currently a Tunku Abdul Rahman University College student majoring in mass communication in public relations. She remarked that “modeling will only be part of my job within this next year or two. For my long term future I intend to nd a more stable fulltime career. How about that? not only is she a drop dead gorgeous young lady, she has her smarts about her as well. Miss Wie also has numerous other ‘supplementary’ talents such as cooking; she does a delicious spaghetti with white cheese sauce! Just a taste and anyone will surely fall in love (with both her specialty dish and her of course), she also plays the piano and loves to dance (having taken ballet lessons). And just to show how down to earth she is, she wasn’t the least bit hesitant about sharing her ‘most embarrassing moment’ that being ‘falling down while working - wearing her high heels right in front of a bunch of people’. You gotta love her.

Hyperfacts! Car: Perodua Myvi 1.5 High AT Engine: 1.5 litre Dual VVT-i engine (2NR-VE) Transmission: Four-speed E-AT Max output: 102 hp at 6,000 rpm Max torque: 136 Nm at 4,200 rpm Combined fuel economy: 20.1 km per litre Here’s the newest version of the country’s best selling cars – the 2018 Perodua Myvi. It goes without saying that it is the most anticipated new car here in the local market, eagerly awaited by just about everybody. There have been numerous websites featuring renderings of just about every conceivable variations, from the mildly amusing to the downright absurd, from a staid unassuming Clark Kent look to a noholds barred pedal-to-the-metal all guns blazing personality. Suɜce to say that in the end it all pans out delightfully. The visual styling revolves around an original, newly-penned design introduced by Perodua. Based on a massively modied platform

belonging to the previous Myvi, the new version has a much more generous dimensions all around – longer wheelbase, an MPV like prole, plus an entirely more rened appearance altogether. You could call it the Myvi’s coming of age model. The front end while keeping certain aspects of the familial lineage intact carries a more mature persona. This test car also features a complete Gear-up exterior add-ons which adds a touch of sportiness to the new Myvi. According to Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh, president and CEO of Perodua, “The all-new Myvi is the rst Perodua model to have an upper body designed completely in-house, without foreign input. Not only is this a testament to

our technology partner Daihatsu’s condence in our abilities, it also allows the car to be tailored to suit the needs and wants that are unique to Malaysians.” On the inside, the new Myvi pretty much adheres to the current convention in interior design, keeping things nice and simple. The dashboard fascia looks neat and uncluttered, while the multimedia system touchscreen looks the part, dominating the center console and also oozing that premium-esque feel. The roomy cabin, considerably roomier than the model it replaces radiates that cocooning ambience which is quite remarkable for a small car.

The features on this test car – the 1.5 High AT model, includes LED headlamps with auto oɛ and follow-me-home functions, LED tail lamps, keyless entry with push start, digital air-con controls with two memory settings, 60:40 split folding rear seats and reverse sensors, Built-in toll reader (integrated SmartTAG), Six airbags (dual front, front sides, curtains), ABS, EBD and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) as standard. Hyperfacts! Car: Volkswagen Passat Comfortline

Mid range Passat Comfortline ticks all the desired boxes

Engine: 1.8 TSI 4 cylinder direct injection Turbo Gearbox: 7-speed DSG Max Power: 180ps at 5100 – 6200rpm Max Torque: 250Nm at 1250 – 5000rpm Fuel consumption: 5.7 l /100km Co2 emission combined: 129 g/km

The name in on itself pretty much says it all, to a point. The word comfort is dened as ‘a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint’. Indeed the denition is spot on soon as you step inside the Passat Comfortline and you’re met by that trademark Volkswagen cabin cocooning you with pretty much all the plus points we have come to expect from VW Malaysia’s biggest saloon oɛering. As the midrange variant in the current VPCM Passat lineup, the Comfortline essentially radiates an abundantly better quality feel and vibe that seems a world away from the entry model Trendline Passat. Harnessing for the most part most of the Trendline’s hardware (powertrain, drivetrain, platform, chassis) the Comfortline has that premium personication thanks to better materials inside and out – eyepleasing updated looks enhanced that much more with LED lights all around, a teeny weenie bit of extra chrome, with stylish 17 inch ‘Istanbul’ alloy wheels topping it out nice and proper, the

midrange Passat has all the bold presence and class the Trendline hasn’t. The Comfortline’s exterior also features a myriad of extra goodies in the form of premium accessories and also clever tech as per its safety and driving enhancements slash assistances, such as ‘KESSY’ Keyless locking & starting system, Automatic headlight activation with ‘Leaving Home’ function, Cruise control, Headlight washer system, Adaptive LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, heated multi adjustable exterior mirrors with environment lighting and curb view, integrated turn signals, front and rear fog lights, heat insulated windshield side and rear windows, LED rear license plate lights and tail lights, front & rear park distance control; plus the perfunctory styling bits: chrome grille, twin exhaust tailpipes (along with the aforementioned 17 inch rims). The Passat Comfortline’s overall comfort (pun simply happened) seems to reverberate through

and through soon as you’re buckled in the Vienna trimmed seats - 12-way electric adjustment with powered lumbar support complete with driver’s side memory with massage function. More driverfocused features are available as well via push button activation: the VW Driver Personalisation and Driver Prole Selection. The avant-garde cabin bores all the unmistakable VW design hallmarks; based on according to VW numerous new design solutions such as Active Info Display (for the Composition Media 6.5” touchscreen interactive digital instruments), 8 speaker sound system (delivering premium quality entertainment on the go), a perfect blend of form accommodating function, an extremely low-prole ambient lighting strip, the pleasingly fresh ‘premium-esque’ vibe of more upmarket materials and accessories, all these elements and design themes coalesced seamlessly into a more pampered and rewarding interior setting.

Of course the pampering and high levels of comfort and all, are well and good for the ‘rest of the occupants’ be it your family, your buddies, or even supposedly friendly ride-sharing strangers, but for the driver elect, this Passat provides ample shove when you require it to, thanks to its 1.8TSI direct injection turbo engine with power and torque gures quoted as 180ps and 250Nm respectively, with max power arriving at just over 5000rpm while max torque accessible from a tick over idle at 1250rpm all the way to 5000rpm, all of which gets relayed to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG gearbox. And oh by the way, the TSI motor is one of those major hardware common to both the Trend and Comfort line Passats. This also implies the identical acceleration gures and max speed of both – 7.6 seconds naught to 100km/h and 232km/h max, certainly not too shabby from a D segment sedan weighing in at about 1400kg powered by an award winning engine with a combined fuel eɜciency of 5.7 liters per 100km. And sure enough being behinf the wheel of the VW Passat Comfortline traversing the Greater KL suburbs from one end to the opposite, the creamy smooth TSI forced induced power delivery, given free unadulterated reign via the DSG transmission, was one of the inherent strength of the B8 midrange Passat. The Comfortline Passat’s on the road character belies its generous proportions, and we were even more surprised by its impressive balance and poise which does a ne impression of its famous and exceptionally illustrious stable-mate. The Volkswagen Passat Comfortline has an onthe-road (minus insurance) price of RM180, 937.20. Of course the deal comes laden with VPCM massive 5 year Manufacturer’s warranty (with 5 year roadside assistance and 15K service interim included). Drive to the nearest VPCM showroom and take the Passat Comfortline for a test drive today.

Tim and Tom Coronel team up to drive ‘The Beast’ in the Dakar Rally The Dakar D k Rally R ll sett to t ttake k place l early l on in i 2018 will see the participation of Dutch brothers Tim and Tom Coronel, both with a long and rich history in motorsport. On this occasion the twin brothers will be sharing driving duties in the car they have commissioned from Jeɛeries Racing in Apple Valley, California. The Coronel Maxxis Dakar Team also has a partnership with the famed Dutch oil brand Eurol. Based on the regulations of the American Baja committee SCORE, this is again referred to as a buggy, but in sharp contrast to the rather fragile solo buggies, this car has a ‘Hummer-like’ and rough appearance, so that the new car of the Coronels has already lovingly been named ‘The Beast’. For Tim Coronel, it will be his eleventh participation in the Dakar Rally. Tom Coronel will be taking part for the fth time. The last time the twins drove together was in 2009 when they alternated behind the wheel of a Bowler Nemesis. In January, they will again be alternating in the driver and co-driver positions. They already got their rst taste of driving the rear-wheel driven Jeɛeries buggy during a test session in the deserts in the Los Angeles area.

The car has a weight of approximately 1,850 kg and is powered by a 6.2 liter Chevrolet LS3 engine with an output restricted at 400 hp. The transmission is a semi-automatic Albins gearbox while Maxxis again is the supplier of the 37 inch tyres. The vastly experienced Dakar specialist Chris Leyds has been appointed as the team manager.

The 40th running of the Dakar Rally, held in South America for the tenth time in 2018, will get underway in Lima, the capital of Peru, on 6 January and nishes in Córdoba in Argentina on 20 January. Halfway through the event, there is a rest day in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Equipment is being loaded for shipping out of the French harbor city of Le Havre on 23 and 24 November.

October 22, 2017, at the MotoGP Live Viewing event organized by the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), at the tires exhibition, Passion Shop, Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. On the occasion, the Shift is very interested in the mini-collection / diecast MotoGP that is displayed for the purpose of attracting the participants who are participating in the support of events organized by SIC. We also had an interview with a diecast collector who participated in his diecast on the show. Encik Mohd Yazid Bin Siwa (Yazid YFR), 33,

from Klang, is a well known and respected MotoGP diecast collector among MotoGP diecast collectors in Malaysia and overseas. Started collecting in 2006 and until now his collection grew like a mushroom growing after the rain. It is clear that Encik Mohd Yazid is a fan of MotoGP riders especially Valentino Rossi because almost his diecast collection is superbike number 46. It is said that his Valentino Rossi diecast collection is complete from 1996 to 2016 models including “special livery bike” ever ridden Rossi and every motorcycle also have a unique gure to match the bike. He has also met his favorite MotoGP

racer to ask the rider to sign some of his diecast collections. Apart from the diecast motor / superbike, replica Rossi mini helmet is also quite complete in her collection. Rossi’s replica helmet collection that he has been able to attract visitors who were present at the event due to their detailed colors and designs as well as the actual size of the helmet. Replica helmets and Rossi motors also have diɛerent designs by year. Therefore, Mr. Mohd Yazid has never missed the latest issue and until now he is still waiting for a new release.

His Diecast collection is scaled from 1: 6, 1:12 and 1:18. The majority of his collection of brands are from Minichamps. Minichamps is the “Oɜcial Merchandise” for Valentino Rossi and limited to just a few units. Apart from ‘details’ and colors, Minichamps also each bike and gura are so accurate with a real bike. So, it’s no surprise why this diecast collection costs hundreds of dollars and is capable of reaching thousands of ringgit if there is a “special livery bike” that’s a bit hard to nd or “RARE”. Yazid is also the Deputy Chairman of the Malay Diecasters Community (MDC) club for the 2017/2018 period. He urged and hoped that the club members would always support and be present for the gathering event organized by MDC from time to time. He also suggested that club members keep track of and help prevent “Scammer” activities on diecast sales in Facebook so that no deceased member is involved. The end of Yazid’s words, “I will continue to collect as long as I can aɛord it. Friends who are new to collect, please come with us at each “TT” session that we make because we are ready to “poison” you: D “

It goes without saying that for those with even the tiniest icker of passion for cars, the all pervading all-dening ‘consideration’ without any exception, is to obtain the absolute maximum performance from what commitment (as per time and money) you’ve dedicated to your particular project. In short, you’d dearly like to know exactly how much gain you’ve achieved with such-and-such upgrades or so-and-so parts swap. Ascertaining the maximum output of a normally aspirated engine is in eɛect determining the Volumetric Eɜciency (VE) of said engine. Volumetric eɜciency is a term that refers to the

ability of an engine to convert air and fuel into power. More accurately, it’s the engine’s ability to make use of the available air around it. By installing a good quality aftermarket intake (with less restrictive air ow) the VE can be improved upon – achieved by reducing the restriction the intake system places on the engine’s ability to gulp in fresh air. The increment in VE as such can be improved further with a freer owing exhaust system – which gets rid of spent gases quicker and more eɜciently, which allows new combustible gas an unhindered access into the combustion chamber.

Engines also have what could be called a VE curve. The VE of an engine varies over the rev range and all engines are more or less eɜcient at various points along that rev range. On this regard camshafts can signicantly alter the VE curve of the engine. The VE curve usually closely follows the torque curve of the engine if you were to graph them together. The reason is that torque output is directly linked to VE, and engines are variably eɜcient. This means that they breathe better or worse at diɛerent engine speeds and throttle angles.

The Fundamentals of Camshaft valve is open. Cam manufacturers agreed to measure and give camshaft duration based on the lifter moving .050 inches. This made duration numbers easier to compare between the diɛerent cam manufacturers.

Camshaft Lift It’s important to be aware of a few ways camshaft lift is talked about. Cam lobe lift, also called Gross Lift, is the distance a cam moves a lifter/tappet. Because a rocker arm multiplies the movement of the tappet, valve lift is not the same as cam lobe lift. A 1.5:1 rocker arm ratio takes 0.4 inches of lobe lift and moves the valve 1.5 times the lobe lift. For example: A cam with a lobe lift of 0.4 inches will move a valve 0.6 inches with a 1.5:1 rocker arm ratio (1.5 x .4). A diɛerent ratio rocker arm will change the valve lift, but not the lobe lift of a cam. You can therefore increase valve lift by using an increased rocker arm ratio. More cam lift means the valve will open further. Increasing cam lift will allow more air or exhaust to move through an engine. If you plan on upgrading your cam to increase lift, you must be sure your valve springs are capable of handling a cam with increased lift. Before you purchase a new set of cams it is wise to ascertain the piston to valve clearance and make certain there’s enough clearance. Camshaft Duration The duration of a camshaft is the measurement of the time one valve begins to open right up until it closes fully. Duration is measured in degrees of crankshaft rotation, not camshaft rotation. You’ll see duration specications at 1.27mm. Cam manufacturers agreed on a standard to measure duration so all cams are measured the same way. The idea is to measure duration starting at 1.27mm

Camshaft Lift and Duration Theory A camshaft with a large duration (300+) can allow a normally aspirated engine to get very close to a VE of 100% at high rpm because the exhausted gases leaving the cylinder help to draw in a larger intake charge. By assisting the incoming air to enter the cylinder you cram more air into the engine, and therefore increase the engine’s VE. Port velocities are critical (velocity is proportional to the engine’s rpm). A long duration camshaft usually has a power band within the higher rpm range (6,000rpm and above) a race-spec engine that is most in its desired element at long and sustained high rpm stints can deliver considerably more horsepower with a higher Volumetric Eɜciency. of tappet (lifter) movement. As the lobe lifts the tappet up, when the tappet moves 1.27mm, the duration is measured from that point. Intake Duration at 1.27mm Lift - The number of degrees the crankshaft moves while the intake valve is open. Cam manufacturers agreed to measure and give camshaft duration based on the lifter moving .050 inches. This made duration numbers easier to compare between diɛerent cam manufacturers. Exhaust Duration at 1.27mmLift - The number of degrees the crankshaft moves while the exhaust

As for low duration cams they work best at low to low-mid rpm. Even though the stock cam has a duration of about 250 degrees, a mild aftermarket cam (with a duration 270 degrees) will still move the point of maximum torque/horsepower further up the RPM range. Such cam will idle smoothly and possess good port velocities at low-to-mid RPMs, increasing the engine’s VE within that range. Eventually the low overlap will hurt the engine at high RPMs because the low overlap does not allow much scavenging to take place. The valves are also open for less time overall, which limits the engine’s maximum VE (unless you resort to ditching normally aspirated and go forced induction).

A super-high duration camshaft like for instance the 320 is pretty much an all-out race cam. It works best at very high RPMs where the scavenging eɛect could conceivably push the VE up beyond 100%. Valve Springs The purpose of the valve spring is to maintain contact between the components in the valve train, so the valve motion will follow the cam prole. This is most important during the deceleration portion of the cam motion, since the inertia forces in the valve train are opposed to the spring forces. Here we will take the weight or mass of all the valve train components and combine them with the acceleration curve for the cam to calculate the valve train forces. We are assuming the valve train is stiɛ. Mechanical engineers call this a kinematic analysis of the valve train. This analysis will tell us the absolute minimum spring force that will be required. The valve train is actually not stiɛ and will vibrate. The vibrations cause periodic uctuations of the forces, so the actual required spring force will be greater.

Conclusion

We want to apply Newton’s Second Law of motion, i.e. force is equal to mass times acceleration. Here the acceleration is caused by the rotation and prole of the camshaft. The mass is the sum of all the individual components in the valve train. Of course, for this Tech tune segment we are only able to cover for the most part, only the basics.

The camshaft is the heart of an engine, and it inuences all the other factors of your engine design. When building a motor, cams are almost always chosen rst. Cams take a long time to understand completely. High duration short lift cams should only be used in racing applications that have a maximum lift rule.

Valvetrains

Basically, high lift and high duration for maximum horsepower, while lower duration with as much lift as you can get for that duration for “low end” torque. That’s why a roller cam is a better torque builder than a at tappet cam. You can get a higher lift with a short duration than you can with a at tappet cam. The at tappet cam has to gradually open the valve; a roller cam opens the valve in a much shorter radius of cam revolution.Lobe center angles have a huge eɛect on performance also; it is not just about lift and duration.

Valvetrains are often the key to improving engine performance. Given a free hand, most engine development engineers will strive for ever higher engine speeds as a route to increased power output, if friction can be prevented from overcoming the extra power released by the increase in speed. Controlling the valvetrain at high speed is much easier when the valvetrain components are stiɛ and light. One advantage of pneumatic valve return systems (PVRS), as found in MotoGP and Formula One, is that there is no valve spring mass, and the ‘piston’ that in eɛect replaces the spring retainer is very light indeed. Many of the diagrams showing PVRS though have the ‘piston’ as a far larger and more complex component than is actually the case in a modern system. The valve spring retainer has to be as light as possible. The retainer’s main function is to retain the valve in its compressed state, providing the correct level of pre-load and reliably coping with the stress cycles imposed on it. The valve retention involves initially compressing the valve and then locking a pair of collets in place so that the valve remains loaded against the seat when the valve is closed or, when the valve is open, the follower should (in most circumstances) remain in contact with the cam lobe. Collets are tapered on the outside, and in order to provide a reliable seat the cone angle on the retainer must closely match the collet angle. The springs are retained in a concentric relationship with the valve by having the spring location (or multiple locations if nested springs are used) machined concentrically to the collet bore. If the springs are not concentric then the loads with the valve won’t be either, and bending stresses will be increased. The top of the retainer represents a large mass, and sometimes there is a tendency to make this too exible – remember that there will be a loss of spring load compared to that expected for a given valve lift as the retainer deects. This can’t be prevented, but it can be mitigated.

The ‘ideal’ aspects of lift and duration for a given porting strategy and vice versa, is also very much dependent upon variables such as: rod stroke ratio, average and peak piston speeds, engine capacity, bore and stroke, square or over-square geometry, valve size, and static compression ratio versus dynamic compression ratio. Race apps tend to diɛer considerably from Street/ track apps.It is indeed critical that the timing of the intake valve aren’t oɛ, because once that’s incorrect you can’t make up for it in the remainder of the cycle. Other variables that eɛects cam proling include intake, header, head ow and even gearing. Ultimately, it all comes down to preferences; as in what the engine and its perked up state of tune needs and of course, with said engine rumbling about restlessly underneath the custommade carbon ber hood of your particular ride, whatyou as the owner have in your speedbeseeching minds.

Feature Car | Mitsubishi Evolution 8

Borrowing a tagline from the 2016 Western Movie box oϪce, here’s a fully loaded, truly Magnicent gun-slinging outlaw Text: Safer & Seriouser

Photos : Kenny Yeoh @eosguy Model : Hanny Eyza

Throughout its illustrious existence – from its 1992 origin right the way through to 2016, well nigh a quarter of a century, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution have established itself as a fan favorite regardless of niche. With over ten successive generations along with a number of variants and special editions in between, the EVO have made routine work of embarrassing fancier, supposedly more premium (supposedly faster and more powerful too) performance cars, as well as outgunning its contemporaries namely the ‘other’ acclaimed JDMs. Starting with the CD9A Evolution I, with one of the earlier tweaked versions of the acclaimed 4G63 turbo powering it along, that rst Evo paved the way for its successor to continue its well heralded performance potency to smoke the likes of European might, namely those borne of Germany and the French even the Brits and the Italians; ensuring its place as a certied icon. A little over a decade after that original, 2003 to be exact, the CT9A based eighth Evolution arrived with all manner of improvements imbued over ten years of relentless development.

something about the purity of the color white that makes this Evo a real looker

Unlike the considerable aesthetical changes between the sixth and the seventh generation Evo, the eighth retained most of the seventh gen looks, for the most part. In any case the familiar and popular Evolution prole (sharp businesslike compact sedan & big rear wing) remained intact, whereas the mechanical mods while not exactly subtle were kept, for the most part ‘regular’. It goes along the familiar ‘if it ain’t broken why x it’ metaphor slash cliché. The production Evolution VIII sported 17” grey Enkei wheels, Brembo Brakes and Bilstein shocks, 6-speed manual gearbox, and a tuned 4G63T with 280ps/276 hp (approx. 234 hp to the wheels). For reference the eighth gen EVO also spawned the legendary MR (Mitsubishi Racing) which comes equipped with a bundle of extra goodies such as slick-response Bilstein shocks, aluminum roof panel (part of its dietary program), improved (updated) electronic fourwheel drive, ACD 5 + Super AYC 6 traction control, and Sports ABS systems. And FYI many more sprightly Evo 8 variants were introduced in the UK among others the FQ300, FQ320, FQ340, and FQ400 (the numerical variations denoting the power outputs therein). So by now it ought to be abundantly clear how capable the Evolution 8 is both as a performance machine in its own right and more to the point, as a tuner’s blank canvas upon which fantabulous and magnicent performance masterpieces had been, can be and shall forever more be, derived from. Speaking of which, here’s one right now.

One look at the images (and its spec sheet) and you immediately know that its renowned forced inducted 4G63 dominates the owner’s attention as well as his budget: the internals featured premium components such as Wiseco pistons, Manley conrods, Kelford cams, Cometic head gasket, Garrett turbo, Blitz intercooler, GReddy BOV, Koyo radiator, HKS muɝer, Works Engineering parts, a myriad of crafty custommade parts and setups, the list goes on. The 6 speed manual gets ATS twin plate clutch – telltale sign indicating how big a gain on the power all the mods achieved. As if that’s not impressive enough there’s also the ultra advanced Haltech Sport 1000 ECU, M7 EBCR, De-link, Apexi digital stuɛs et al stacked prominently on the Evo 8 dashboard. Speaking of the dashboard, this Evo 8 also ‘adopted’ a stock Evo 8 MR interior. Its exterior is stock as well except for the Ganador side mirror and of course the TE37 wheels nished in Magnesium Blue sized 17 inch. One nal aftermarket parts swap in this truly stellar Fastwork Garage built and Saint Performance tuned Mitsu is the Tein Street Advance Damper kit.

Feature Car | Nissan Skyline R33

Red cars always win right? Well, they can’t get it done without a much needed boost in performance so here’s the secret ingredients… apart from getting a red car Text : Hypertune Photos : Kenny Yeoh @eosguy Model : Vienna Lim

It’s easy to shed a tear for the R33 generation of the Nissan Skyline lineage. Of the trio that truly elevated the Skyline nameplate into the upper echelons of JDM legend, the middle child between the R32 and R34 always lacked the love that its siblings were generously showered with. Being likened to a boat is only a compliment if you were building a limousine, not a sports car. Nonetheless, the R33 is still a Skyline and the right mix of ingredients will always yield ballistic performance for the average Joe. And by George, that’s exactly what George has done here. The owner of this gorgeous scarlet specimen, he has injected the right amount of components to transform the car into something that goes as quick as it looks.

This owner’s ne taste permeats every color coded parts of his mighty R33

Under the hood sits the RB25DET engine but almost everything attached to its exterior is anything but stock. The stock turbo was binned in favour of a much larger Garrett GT35 unit that now sits on a Tonnka exhaust manifold with a pair of Turbosmart 40mm wastegates to channel out excess exhaust gases. Before being ignited, air is taken in by an AEM 5.0-inch lter before being compressed through the turbo and cooled by the aluminium front mount intercooler before a larger Q45 80mm throttle body governs how much enters the custom intake manifold. A Turbosmart Raceport blow-oɛ valve prevents compressor surge from sending the GT35 to be rebuilt too soon. The whole fuelling process starts at the tank with a Walbro 400lph pump feeding Denso 650cc injectors mounted on a HKS rail with an Aerospeed fuel pressure regulator handling the pressure. Finally, Splitre Direct Ignition coilpacks light up the Denso Iridium spark plugs that have been recapped to 0.8mm to ignite the air and fuel mixture. Everything then exits the engine and turbo via custom 3.0-inch piping with a HKS HiPower Silent muɝer keeping the car under the radar by lowering the burble. Helping keep the engine from overheating is a custom aluminium radiator topped by a GReddy radiator cap with a higher pressure rating. One of the best standalone ECUs on the market is called upon to govern the fuelling, timing and other parameters of the engine’s performance. This is one area you shouldn’t skimp out on and George believes the same as well, opting for a Link G4+ Xtreme unit that works with the Turbosmart electronic boost controller to handle the software part of things. Still retaining the stock ve-speed manual transmission, it has been given some extra gear to cope with the power in the form of an Ogura ORC Super Single clutch set that is nearing the maximum rated power for this application. In the handling department, the Tein name is as old as JDL folklore and its SuperStreet coilovers hold up the four corners, aided by Nismo front and rear strut bars to tie the suspension towers together.

Some extra stopping power is now necessary to bring this car to a halt. Taking a leave out of the younger brother’s book, this R33 now sports a set of Brembo calipers front and rear taken from an BNR34. The four-piston pieces up front and the two-piston rears now bite on the stock rotors. It’s diɜcult to notice them though because they’re hiding behind gleaming white Volk Racing TE37 wheels wrapped in some of the best street rubbers money can buy; Michelin Pilot Super

Sport tyres in a 245/40R18 in front and wider 265/40R18 out back. If that shade of red wasn’t enough to grab your attention, the subtle additions of a front splitter, rear diɛuser and that ginormous GT wing should get the job done. Whether it cruises by or is unleashing its turbocharged fury on asphalt, you’d be lying if you said you never gave this red rocket a second glance.

Feature Car | Porsche 911 Targa

A discreet pseudo retro 911 Targa with handy supercharged power Text: Suave&Sensuous Photos: Kenny Yeoh@eosguy & Dennis Lhy Model: Sheryn Yap

Porsche. Did you know there’s a video on how to correctly pronounce the brand? I mean how cool is that? as if there aren’t enough cool stuɛs revolving around this most iconic of Stuttgart automobile manufacturer. Together with being the absolute epitome of coolness and all the impromptu adulations be it literal or clichéd or anything in between, Porsche cars have always reside upon a special place within the collective hearts of car enthusiasts, or simply, people who love cars, the world over, for a long, long time. Consider that in the past I had trouble coming up with angles or materials on a particular feature, as in anecdotes, true stories and legends, racing drama and happenings, gossips from Hollywood et al. and yet, soon as I key in Porsche nearly 400 million results appeared within what was it zero point eight seconds; who knows how many couple of billion results would come out should you give it a full second? Yeah well such is the persistence of time in this day and age, the intrinsic value of time itself multiplying exponentially it seems rendering us humankind to deal with time in milliseconds or nanoseconds. Whew!

Those shiny wheels adds another dimension to this ultra cool nine-eleven

Yeah well that’s all part of the nature of things these days ennit? Just like a 911, with its illustrious genealogy, motorsport achievements, awards, accolades, intertwined with its huge pool of tuners and specialists, further emboldened with its massive global following; has always been, undoubtedly is, and shall forever more be, an automobile icon – an anointed giant amongst an exclusive ensemble of widely acknowledged automobiles that denes the purest embodiment of speed and drama both form and function.

Indeed ladies and gents, Porsche’s halo car brings out the most poetic most eloquent and deeply articulated literary nuances from even the most verbose, most obtuse of minds. Consider that despite being essentially more than fty years in production, the 911 remained true to its 1963 genesis; its famous, instantly recognizable silhouette remained essentially unaltered despite having undergone many evolutions from birth.

Together with the 911’s exalted stature its ‘multinational’ list of highly established tuners slash specialists have inevitably ‘rode shotgun’ astride the 911’s relentless evolution, each going about R&D-ing and honing their products to match the stellar levels of performance and panache the 911 has credibly accumulated over the years. One such name is TPC – the US’ MidAtlantic’s premier Porsche builder cum tuner cum specialist, with its well planted roots in the IMSA Supercar Series of the late 1980s and early 1990s. TPC one-make focus (exclusively on Porsche) has made them unquestionable experts in Porsche service, tuning, and racing. Apparently one of those who knows his Porsche the owner of this exemplary 911 Targa chose TPC ‘positive displacement’ Supercharger kit simply because it provides lag-free performance, at a low boost level, without the need for extensive internal engine modications, resulting in a reliable, high-yield, performance upgrade available – the perfect compromise between stomach churning performance and everyday reliability. Supervising the considerable power hike is a Unichip ECU – yet another popular name in the aftermarket tuning scene with proven track record in both street and race applications. Sucking out excess gases from the higher state of tuned 3.6 liter at-six is a top quality custom exhaust system As per its looks the owner set about his approach in much the same way he did with the go aspect – straightforward minimalist concept. The narrow body unblown 911 Targa gets a fat and blistering widebody Turbo conversion, suavely topped oɛ with that evergreen Falken Azenis shod BBS LM wheels sized 18 inch with its famous meshed spokes given a cool gold nish complete with a Porsche center cap.

Feature Car | Suzuki Swift S1K

The perpetually active local motor racing scene has stagnated, they say. And ‘they’ reasoned, being the hub of said scene, the impending absence of that ‘Formula Satu’ weekend from the SIC calendar come 2018 onwards, meant that there’s nothing much to look forward to. They say. Well that’s the ckle state of the new cyber generation of self confessed racing enthusiasts, being all xated on F1 and everything associated with the sport, meaning glamour, partying, happening, and high end lifestyle. They’re knowledge of racing, whoops F1 racing I mean, revolves around the all-excess cyber domain of handy clickable sources, which, despite being a sub-universe onto itself, these folks are only interested in Lewis Hamilton latest tattoo, or who won, who lost, who fast, who slow, who good, and who not good, and in that order.

Text: Fast&Dangerous Photos: Kenny Yeoh Model : Janice Tan

I precluded the above ‘sideswipe’ specically for those posers (there’s no other way to put it) in this Swift S1K feature to make them see what real racing is all about. What pure blooded and genuinely passionate motor racing fans slash enthusiasts slash practitioners do 24-7 all for the love of the sport. There’s nothing much as per the glamour or ‘lifestyle of the rich and famous’ in it, even if quite a few are pretty damn rich themselves. Nope, nothing of the sort, it is pure racing, the buzz, the adrenalin, the dopamine x a racing driver gets when they’ve devoted their mind body and soul in pursuit of their collective goal – to win, and the deep and utter satisfaction thereof. This race prepped Suzuki Swift was one of the cars in the oɜcial entry list for the recently held Sepang 1000km which featured racing cars of the Group N and Group A categories – encompassing 1600 to 1800 cc (with stipulated rulings as such). The organization behind this Swift’s 2017 S1K campaign is none other than Works Engineering – a major player in every conceivable aspect. Partnering Team DOT Eyewear, this Works Swift also counts Lucas Oil, Multi Prot Resources, Spike, Senira Motorsports and Tom’s Stickers, as their additional partners. The crew of KSJ Garage provides support.

Being a race car, this Swift’s list of modication is therefore strictly regulated, with nary a loophole to exploit or to maneuver around. You see for genuine racers such as these guys the thought of gaining some advantage via some illegal concept or approach would never ever occur, and suggest them not in that regard, ever. In any case the powerplant mounted snugly under the hood is, you could say, decent (in the grand scheme of things) but pretty much spot on for endurance purposes. The Swift’s twin cam engine had its head ported and polished, its stock ECU reashed, while the stock cams and valve springs were replace with Tomei and Monster respectively. The gearbox is stock as well albeit with Cusco LSD. The rest of the Suzuki hatch is all as straightforward as they come, meaning aftermarket parts coming in place of the stock. The stock suspension was ditched in favor of Claw adjustable ones, the brakes had its stock pads replaced with Project Mu Racing 999. The interior is all standard fair, for a race car that is. You’ve got the prerequisite rollcage (6 point), Beltenick racing seat & harness, NRG gauges, Sparco steering and that’s pretty much it.

Despite the absence of creature comfort Janice still managed to ash her killer smile

Works Engineering & Lucas Oil partners Team DOT Eyewear Endurance racing, the multi-faceted demands heaped upon both the men and their machines inevitably underlines the quintessential theme – that to nish alone is an achievement in on itself. And so it was that the 2017 edition of the Sepang 1000km unfolded back during the month of November with almost forty entries consisting two classes, one’s the premier Malaysia Touring Car (MTC) class while the other is the Moty’s Vios Enduro class which is part of the Vios Cup series 2017.

One of the entries in the MTC category is the number 69 Team DOT Eyewear Suzuki Swift which entered the Sepang 1000km Endurance with a new partnership with Works Engineering & Lucas Oil. The Works Engineering name needs no introduction as per its merits especially in the local car tuning scene as well as all around the region. Works Engineering also has a stellar reputation in motor racing as well, being a major player in every conceivable aspect.

The Team DOT Eyewear Swift was one of the cars in the oɜcial entry list for the recently held Sepang 1000km which featured racing cars of the Group N and Group A categories – encompassing 1600 to 1800 cc (with stipulated rulings as such). Works Engineering and Lucas Oil deal have brought them together with the likes of Multi Prot Resources, Spike, Senira Motorsports and Tom’s Stickers, under Team DOT Eyewear Suzuki Swift.

Feature Car | 1997 Civic EK2

With the FK8R thundering into the local scene recently, this K20A powered EK hits all the right note in our impromptu Type R homage

Honda fans have been rejoicing oɛ late have they not? Their still palpable joy and happiness had all to do with what you might ask? Could it be that the ultra mega advanced NSX had its equally mega pricing slashed by half? Or that Mugen is being absorbed into Honda as and when AMG and Mercedes had done so not that long ago? Yeah well nothing of the sort, though that’ll be something now wouldn’t it? To have at your beckoning hotrodded production versions of Hondas ahem excused me Mugen Hondas would certainly be at the top of a hardy Honda fan wish list. Nope, none of that had come to past, at least not to my knowledge. Of course all you well informed Honda enthusiasts ought to get the gist of what I’m intentionally dilly-dallying over yes? Like that cool dude from Black Eyed Pearls or Piss or Peas or something of the sort, Andre Benjamin like to say ‘Come on now’. Did he or did he not say that?

Skewering way oɛ topic for a bit, I did recall he uttered those exact same words in his trademark lilt – talking the same way he sings, in that Mark Wahlberg movie. Of course none of the above matter and what’s more they’re way out of sync with the substance of this piece. But the thing is, this here is all intentional on my part; and I am forever me the man with his hand on the keyboard, and not just any keyboard mind you but this keyboard. Right come on now, of course the single biggest happening as per Honda here in the local scene was the debut of the FK8 Civic Type R – touted as the most powerful Honda being brought in by Honda Malaysia. The numbers are all big league stuɛ – 320ps, what was it 7:43 Nordschleife lap, and err the pricing is pretty damn big too, a few grand north of three hundred thousand RM; that’s 3 and 2 followed by four zeroes. That last entry could well be the sole determinant of the FK8R’s appeal over here. Then again the FK8R’s performance repertoire supersedes every other consideration, as well they should as that ‘all powerful’ Type R represents the ultimate manifestation of going fast from the purview of Honda’s performance maestros the lot of whom rules the roost at Honda’s in-house go-faster department.

Of course with the current gen Civic’s range topping model dominating the local headlines and all, the occasion would be all the more appropriate with a Honda Type R themed feature as such. And this very feature right here isn’t just a regular feature per se, on the contrary it is an extra crispy, fattened up loaded with cholesterol, double Type R feature, in a manner of speaking.

And thus I speak in a manner whereupon this 20 year old EK2 gets its Type R superpower from an Integra DC5R or to call it by its oɜcial name DC5 Integra Type R, although DC5R sounds a whole lot sexier yes? It’s all to do with alphanumerical combination. The DC5R’s K20A (including its indispensible manual gearbox) which gets all manner of go-faster stuɛs such as PLM headers, J’s Racing muɝer et al is mounted underneath the perfunctory carbon ber hood of the J’s Racing brand, which perked up this EK2’s looks superbly whence combined with a complete Mugen 96 aerokit. Rolling stocks comes in the form of the trademark TE37 wrapped in Toyo R888 sized 15 inches.

nished in the loudest shades of yellow this EK also has the repower to match its looks

On the inside though it is all Mugen or at least almost 90 percent Mugen – from bucket seats (plus railing), steering, shifter and then some. Chassis slash handling works – all top notched parts and craft mind you (done by Izal Autoworkz & Anuar Mugen Auto) features among others Tein suspension, Endless stoppers, Cusco, Function 7 and the list goes on.

In a nutshell this very well thought out EK2 Civic with equal care as per its performance and handling modiďƒžcations is the perfect tribute to the Type R lineage. Should this example hit the right button in your emotion we provide you the aforementioned go-to guys contacts for you to proceed.

Feature Car | Honda Jazz

With W ith a mighty mighty ensemble ensemble of of Mugen Mugen components inside and out, this funky yellow GD Jazz does a brilliant job of being a Mugen showcase The Jazzy vibe in this primary color nish GD3 Fit is so abundantly clear that you get a palpable sense of its funkiness almost upon rst sight. And when you factor in the huge emporium of Mugen accessories scattered pretty much all over the exterior and interior of this distinctively ‘jazzy’ Jazz, the whole ‘jazziness’ gets mightily cranked up – all the more appropriate for it to be featured in this very mag. Just to recap what the Jazz is, it is one of Honda’s most successful models of recent time – pretty much an instant success following its 2001 debut – the GD model which was launched initially as a 1.3l with the L13A i-DSI engine and CVT gearbox. The combination of a well rounded design, good looks and driveablity promptly established a large fan base the world over.

Text: Senna4ever Photos: Kenny Yeoh

However, with a basically economy-biased setup, outright performance is understandably limited. This gave rise to situations where Fits/Jazzes looked faster than what they were capable of. Consequently enthusiasts started calling out to Honda for a higher performance Fit / Jazz. In Japan, this was led by inuential and ‘powerful’ reviewers like Keiichi ‘Drift King’ Tsuchiya and Formula Nippon racer Naoki Hattori calling Honda for a Fit Type-R. Honda’s response was to introduce a 1.5l Fit with the new L15A VTEC engine and the 7 speed CVT gearbox which so happens coincides with the example we have right here. Anyway the L15A single cam engine is rated at 110ps and for this ‘application’ it remained untampered, pretty much. The owner opted to do up exclusively on improving the eɜciency of channeling the gaseous wastes out – sort of a more intricate, articulated denition of doing up the exhaust system. Starting right oɛ the engine block there’s four separate components beginning with the Mugen extractor, then the J’s Racing Downpipe, on to the J’s Racing titanium B-pipe and nally the Mugen Titanium Tip Muɝer. The owner also installed a couple of dressing up components both of which are listed in the spec sheet at the feature’s end. Before we cover the aesthetical revisions in this here GD3 Fit lets do away with the chassis slash handling upgrades rst. The stock dampers were dumped in favor of an F-tuned Racing Road / Touge Inverted Monotube with High & Low, Soft & Hard adjustability; as per the chassis enhancements there’s the Mugen Strut Tower bar at the front, a couple of J’s Racing bars – one’s the Room/oor Bar while the other is a Monkey or pillar bar.

Stopping power gets quite an awesome Project Mu upgrade package: racing caliper and 282mm slotted discs up front, slotted disc with the stock caliper at the rear, and lastly steel braided brake hose all around. The cool setup is displayed nicely behind the 15 inch Mugen MF10L shod with Yokohama Advance Neova AD08-R. Now the Mugen rims hints at the huge collection of Mugen accessories which virtually cover this GD3 Jazz in its stylized Mugen mobile personication. From the front to the back its all Mugen this and Mugen that – Mugen carbon ber hood, Mugen

Front Bumper (with chrome garnish), Mugen rear bumper (for single exhaust), Mugen Side Skirt, Mugen HID foglamp with switch, Mugen Spoiler, Mugen Rear Shark Fin, Mugen Door visor, Mugen Tailgate, phew! I guess that’s about it, at least on the outside. Then you got a titanium HID 3step with switch, clear lens tail lamp plus the original sunroof for the Fit GD3. On the inside the Mugen presence permeates every nooks and crannies if ever a nook and a cranny had ever been adopted to describe the interior section of a Honda, that is. In any case

here they are, in no discernable sequence save for the fact that they’re all Mugens: Mugen FG360 Steering wheel (and Boss kit), gear knob and gear booth cover, gear shifter indicator plate, handbrake cover, sport paddle, door step, rear mirror cover, black face assist gauges, Type S door trim, and a complete seating package: Mugen MS-R driver seat, MS-Z co-pilot seat, genuine leather hide Type S rear seats. If there’s ever a Mugen GD3 Jazz out there, then this Type S Garage & R-Pit Garage & Aiez Garage prepared example might just be it.

Thus eye-catching GD Jazz comes with a long list of Mugen parts inside out

By the time this issue goes into print KL Wangan ought to already be one of the, if not the top issue being discussed, commented, debated, evaluated, analyzed and ultimately be given a wholesome seal of approval by the collective horde of enthusiasts across the region. As a matter of fact, the singular unifying theme of the movie – the cars in all their multi faceted, modied splendor ensures its universal appeal reaches a considerably bigger audience, particularly with a Japanese buzzword embedded in the movie title. Produced by talented local actor slash producer Pekin Ibrahim, KL Wangan revolves around the local street racing scene with a specic theme focusing on the midnight happenings (hence the

title which means Midnight Race in Japanese). With a budget of more than RM7 million, this allout action motion picture goes beyond being just another Fast Furious inspired movie. Undoubtedly the plot of the midnight street racing themed movie puts a clear emphasis on all-out street racing action juxtaposed with emotive and humane elements – are both surere narrative for a car racing movie genre.

Produced by Centro Pictures KL Wangan also has one major addition to its credit in the form of a sponsorship deal with Volkswagen Malaysia. As such Volkswagen has a prominent presence in the movie – with a slew of VW’s most renowned driver’s car namely the Mk5 Golf GTI and Mk7 Golf R, as well as the Passat B8 and the sprightly Beetle, which undoubtedly lends an air of exclusivity to lm.

Nonetheless the lm also managed to seamlessly blend local elements interwoven with poignant and intriguing characters played by a ne cast of high caliber Malaysian actors featuring Pekin Ibrahim himself alongside the stellar Faizal Hussein as the two main characters supported by Kazuto Soon, Emily Lim, Jasmine Suraya Chin, Kodi Rasheed and Kamarool Yusof.

VW Golf MK5 GTI, Vw MK7 Golf R, Daihatsu Mira L5, Perodua Kancil, Perodua Viva, Subaru WRX STI V.8, Nissan Skyline R34, Toyota Supra, Mitsubishi evo, Proton Wira, Proton Satria, BMW, Taxi Proton Iswara, Bmw E36, Evo 7, Honda Integra DC5, Honda Civic EK, Toyota AE86

The Story KL Wangan tells the story about HONG & YUDI both with a long history in street racing – from the smallest most basic cars right up to the full blown, no-holds-barred performance cars. The story began by coincidence when Hong and Yudi ran into each other albeit unbeknownst to one another.

While the race was going at breakneck speeds, Hong crashed and was soon rescued by Ejay who drives an Iswara taxi. At that point, owing his life to Ejay, Hong expressed his gratitude to Ejay by oɛering Ejay a job – nd the guy who was, to Hong, responsible for causing the accident in the rst place.

With the passage of time having whisked away during which both of them have gone on to established themselves in the grand scheme of things – both having business interests of their own and both with checkered pasts belonging to another life altogether. Inevitably the racing genes ran deep and pure within the two main protagonists and therein the inevitable coming together took place in a street racing powwow as Hong and Yudi slugged it out at high speed, neither one nor the other having any inkling of recognition of one another.

Not only that, the guy also ran away with Hong’s bag containing RM500, 000. Ejay accepted Hong’s job oɛer and proceeded to begin his search. As for Yudi he tried everything to rescue Hong from the wreck prior to Ejay’s arrival but decided against it soon as he recognized Hong. Instead of helping, he took oɛ straight away with the loot.

Until something happens.

Pretty soon Ejay’s search bore fruit, nding Yudi and eventually confronting the man. Ejay politely asked Yudi to return the money on behalf of his employee (Hong). Yudi agreed but for one condition: that they raced to Wangan, reminiscing their golden years with all the prerequisites therein.

The deal was, if Hong were to win then Yudi shall double the half a million bucks and pay Hong RM1 million. As it turns out Hong was still injured following the crash, and decided to ask Ejay to take his place. Will Ejay succeed in going against Yudi? While all this is happening Hong’s beautiful daughter Olivia made it plain that she does not approved of Ejay tagging along his father. OLIVIA herself is not very close to her father due to an incident where her mother have been kidnapped and raped and murdered mercilessly. For her, she blames everything on her father. Olivia is against her father’s intention of getting involved in the street racing anymore and tried her best to prevent Ejay from explaining the real reason for the race. Eventually Olivia made her way to the start of the nal race just as the animosity between Hong and Yudi came to a boil resulting in an all out ght between their men. Upon her arrival, Olivia was shocked to the bones when she came face to face with YUDI as if there is a history between them. Why was Olivia shocked to see Yudi? Can Ejay somehow sort out the grudges and hatred between Hong and Yudi? What is the real conict between Yudi, Hong, Olivia and Ejay?

The Rides As ever the list of rides in KL Wangan are indeed extensive and undoubtedly impressive. For starters the VWCM prominence was duly represented by two of its most renowned models – the Golf, one’s the Mk5 GTI while the other is the Mk7 Golf R. As per the modied powerhouses the list is more or less dominated by JDMs with a few Conti rides thrown in the mix. The Japanese rides featured in KL Wangan were the Subaru WRX STI V.8,

Nissan Skyline R34, Toyota Supra, Mitsubishi EVO, Mitsu EVO 7, Honda Integra DC5, Honda Civic EK, Toyota AE86 and Daihatsu Mira L5. Together with the aforementioned VW Golf duo there’s also a couple of Bimmers given their screen time as it were. Rounding things up are of course our very own cars made up of Proton Wira, Proton Satria, Proton Iswara (taxi), Perodua Kancil and Perodua Viva. That Iswara cab is of course a prominent feature being driven by

Ejay who is the main character played by Pekin Ibrahim himself. KL Wangan oɛers an impressive selection of street racing, stunts and all the actions therein, which makes it a must-see movie for all you car enthusiasts out there. With an interesting storyline made alive and intriguing by a stellar cast, KL Wangan bodes well for the local movie industry in general and the multifaceted local car tuning subculture in particular.

60 Subarus created the biggest meet-up event in Butterworth, Penang. Headed to Hard Rock Hotel, got hit by a freak storm overnight and survived. After a month-long planning, the Subaru convoy of the SXVCM set sail from Kuala Lumpur to the Pearl of the Orient, Penang for the biggest Subaru meetup ever in the history of Malaysia, with 60 cars participating! The convoy’s rst stop took them to Ipoh, where they teamed up with their Northern Team counterpart to commemorate Ipoh’s newest Subaru showroom in Vivo Square. CST Auto Group welcomed them with open arms and with the best Nasi Kandar in Ipoh! Their departure from Ipoh was oɜcially agged oɛ by CST Auto Group after which the entire convoy headed north towards Juru to rendezvous with the remaining Subaru family from up north. As they reached Juru, it ‘conveniently’ rained enabling the SXVCM convoy to test the highly acclaimed Subaru AWD capabilities – as we all know all too well, it is the wet weather conditions where Subaru technology and safety shined most. They reached the Subaru Butterworth managed by Gembira Motors who provided them with shelter and food. Before they departed, everyone became a winner, thanks in no small part to AWDTechnika Malaysia for their generous lucky draw sponsorships as well as being part of their vehicle Support Team! The SXVCM convoy was split into groups as they braved the oods for their inbound journey to the island and to the convoy’s last stop - Hard Rock Hotel. At night as Hard Rock Cafe live band played “November Rain”, the storm pounded the island like no tomorrow. (Inappropriately enough as per that Guns N Roses hit) It was a close call but all members and Subaru’s stayed safe. After the authorities cleared the roads of debris and devastation, the convoy was nally able to leave the island with an unforgettable experience. (as it happened amidst the massive ood). The SXVCM spokesman remarked and I quote: “Our hearts went out to the ood victims as we saw houses 75% submerged in water as we made our way south from Juru. One thing from this journey, we brave the SUN, STORM and FLOOD and came home to tell the tale, till our next Road Trip, we will meet again, thanks to all members who participated. Last but not least, we would like to extend our gratitude’s to: Our Ipoh sponsors, CST Group (Ipoh Auto City), Our Penang sponsors, Gembira Motors Subaru Butterworth” Subaru XV Club Malaysia would also like to say thank you to this year’s Main Sponsors: AWDTechnika (AE) Glenmarie, Motion Beyond Setia Alam, Motor Image and Tan Chong Group.

Like most if not all one-make car clubs the HRV ROM – the acronym for Honda HRV Registered Owner Malaysia, came about from the sole purpose of providing an exclusive network for HRV owners to exchange issues and opinions besides highlighting problems to Honda Malaysia. Again just like other car clubs the HRV ROM was founded by only a handful of HRV owners – pretty much a small group of friends (eight in total). The inaugural meeting took place at Petaling Jaya Semantic Trade Center soon after the club’s March 2016 establishment. And now almost two years hence the club is Registrar of Societies (ROS) certied and there’s 181 HRV ROM members. Back in August of this year HRV ROM organized a convoy to commemorate its rst annual general meeting, with said convoy agged oɛ from KL heading south to Johor, Lotus Desaru Hotel Johor Bahru to be exact (where the AGM was to be held) The Rest and Outback Stop in Seremban was the predetermined rendezvous point or checkpoint one for the club members from the East Coast, the Northern states, to gather before they depart for Johor. Along the way their Melaka friends awaits at Checkpoint 2 and thereafter the entire southbound convoy journeyed to Checkpoint 3 in Ayer Hitam. After a few hours of horseback riding, they all reached the main destination of Lotus Desaru Beach Resort. After all the participants got the room, they all had gathered for the rst AGM message. Each Member is required to attend the AGM meeting this time. Club members have chosen the highest council and the presentation of new club constitutions, club budget presentations and oɜcial formal opening. The HRV ROM club dinner is held in the evenings and is hosted by a HRV ROM expert’s lawyer. The dinner was included with karaoke events. At 7 a.m. on the second day all participants have breakfast with the family with a delicious breakfast menu provided by the hotel. After breakfast at 9 am the participants started gathering on the eld to conduct sports activities. There are several sports activities held for children, wives and HRV ROM members. Afterwards, all participants took bathing activities at Water Park Hotel. At 12.30 pm all participants of the convoy checked out of the hotel and shook hands with their sign of separation. The satisfaction of the convoy participants has come true in the success of this event in one big family. The nature of the familiarity and the spirit of helping you so deeply in the soul of HRV ROM peers. Hopefully, the HRV ROM will continue to work and be able to meet in other activities in the future. The surprising results from Saturday’s races in the Vios Challenge carried on to Sunday’s events and heaped on the added element of excitement to the plot. All three classes of racing yielded plenty of oohs and aahs from the crowds who were riveted to the action of the day’s events at the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival. The rst draw of the day came from the Super Sporting category where an opportunist Mitchell Cheah took the win muscling his way past for the chequered ag. However the man was given a 15 second penalty for jumping the start which promoted Syaq Ali and Boy Wong to second and third respectively. Ser Ming Hui took the win even before the post race decisions by the stewards. In the Promotional Class, Shawn Lee had been expected to make a clean sweep of his wins once again in Race 2 but to the surprise of his rivals, made a rare mistake in the fast Turn 6 on the opening lap. The spin left him pointing the wrong way on the track and he had to let all his rivals pass before he could get moving again. This promoted Shukri Yahaya to the lead with Danny Koo in second place. Diana Danielle who had been clocking respectable times managed to secure the third spot, managing to be the rst lady to stand on the podium in the Vios Challenge. Bad luck however struck Janna Nick, Venice Min and Geraldine Gan as they had to retire from their ne run.

The biggest excitement was for the nal race of the day, the second Super Sporting Class race. Despite the delay due to torrential rain, the crowd remained to watch the race was not to be missed. The top six from the previous race were now lined up on the grid in reversed order. By token of his fth position in Race 1, Djan once again found himself on the front row beside the young Mitchell Cheah who nished sixth. As the track remained sodden, the race began in earnest after the convoy followed the Toyota Camry safety car for the initial three laps. Tengku Djan was gunning hard but the young Mitchell of the Dream Chaser Team had none of it. He was a picture of calm despite Djan’s incessant attempts at passing. Lap 9 saw Djan tap the Dream Chaser Team’s car, sending Mitchell wide. Despite that, Mitchell managed to recover his Vios and did not lose his rst spot. Djan continued to relentlessly pursue Mitchell but as the pair continued to tangle, William Ho slowly crept up on the duo from his lowly 7th position.

William Ho found his opening and made a daring dive into the tight Turn 16 on lap 12 but Djan refused to yield. The pair traded paintwork up the hill and in the process, Djan suɛered a puncture and had to pull out of the race. William himself suɛered a slow puncture but not before he was slapped with a 15 second penalty for his move on Djan. Boy Wong who remained safe throughout the race took a well-deserved 2nd ahead while William managed to limp home into third despite the penalty and puncture.

The crowd that turned up at the MAEPS leg of the TGR Racing Festival was truly rewarded with excellent racing and great entertainment from both the racing action as well as the oɛ-track activities. It is an event not to be missed and our southern fans can look forward to the next Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival on 19th and 20th January 2018 in Johor Bahru. Event The past two years has witnessed the culture of Stance & Fitment being one of the focuses and choices among local motor modication enthusiasts, especially for those who are new to the world of car modication. For some, it is considered an unhealthy development, but for some people the culture of Stance & Fitment or simply simpler to say S & F, seeing this culture is a form of renewal in the world of local modications that deserve to be lifted as something to be proud of. Around 2014, a community called Low Fellow (LF) from Seri Manjung, Perak. The original idea of the establishment of the LF was initially aimed at gathering crews and customers of the workshop Unkle Projekt, a workshop located in Lumut, Perak, which tended towards the transformation of S & F concept machinery. Looking at the more crew members who joined LF, coupled with the lack of S & F events / meet-ups held around Perak, the LF joined several other communities in organizing small-scale meet-ups.

3KRRWRV 1RWUH 5HIXV The thrill continued, with LOWFEST ‘Scrape To Da Ground’, the rst event of LF at Aeon Mall, Seri Manjung, Perak. The welcome was not disappointing with the presence of about 200 cars with the S & F concept. The LOWFEST journey continues with the recent LOWFEST / 2 hosting at its original location, Aeon Mall, Seri Manjung, Perak. Due to the lack of S & F events this year, LF / 2 has become the focus of S & F fans from all over the peninsular Malaysia, in particular, to participate in supporting LF / 2. Preparations and planning are being made about 2 months early before the event. As a rule, location selection is one of the most important aspects before any other work is carried out. If you do not, everything is ready, venue is not approved.

The LF / 2 awards can be seen by the ood of S & F concept cars around the city of Seri Manjung the day before LF / 2. This is coupled with the presence of cars that have been assembled as early as 8 am, around the outside of the LF / 2 site, seem to indicate that they are ready to enter the LF / 2 site area at any time. At around 9.30am several machines from The Gauntlet, a name that did not need to be introduced was originally from the north earlier ahead of the others to enter the event area. At around 10.00 am, as promised, the S & F concept-based machineries have ocked to LF / 2 sites and began to slow down around 2.30pm. This situation causes special sites to be used to accommodate the attendance of participants who exceeded the organizers expectations. A total of 283 machines were oɜcially recorded for LOWFEST/2. LOWFEST / 2 ends with the announcement and presentation of the plaque of appreciation to the 12 selected jury selectees to meet the 12 criteria provided. At this opportunity, the Low Fellow once again wishes to record their gratitude to all involved in supporting LOWFEST / 2. Wait for the appearance of LOWFEST 3.
