WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) Developable surface is ruled surface and can be flattened into geometric figures. The three elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. Cylinder surfaces are curved surfaces that made by a group of parallel lines. And the unrolled edges of cylinder surface are straight lines. Cone surfaces consist of a vertex point and a profile curve. Tangent surfaces pf space curves are made of tangent polygonal surfaces.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) Developable surfaces are important because they can unroll complex structures into flat patterns and can be easily understand. It saves a lot of time and work for the building process of architectures. It also makes sure that the design of one architecture is possible and feasible. For example, the Huyghe and Le Corbusier Puppet Theatre break the roof structure into five hundreds diamond shaped sheet to achieve the curving look. It shows the importance of developable surface in the understanding of architectural geometry.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication can use two-dimensional pattern to create three-dimensional models. It can show ideas in a more solid way and offer various functions to change and improve design projects. The use of computer aided design(CAD) in digital fabrication allow people to see from different angles and directions which help to increase the understanding of the original flat design. It can also shows what the projects look like in reality in a really short time.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) There are several reasons why folding is widely used in the expression of building design. The first one is that it is an efficient way to express an idea. It is easier to understand an object in three-dimensional ways. The second reason is that it can help to save the funding. It shows the depth , dimensions and materials of an project and it provides the way to calculate the possible budget of it.

EXPLORING 3D PANELLING

In this module, I use seven different pyramids and two points to attract the shapes. It can be seen that, my landscape is a little high in the middle and the south-east corner, so in order to keep balance and make contrast,, I add higher pyramid at the southeast and north-west, and make it lower in the middle. My arrangement was inspired by forests. The high and pointy pyramids represent tall trees, the joined two pyramids are the mountains, in the middle gully terrain there is a river flow trough.
